This latest request for a reduction in millage comes after a similar reduction in the 2016 levy request,a combined 23.5% reduction from millage at the beginning of 2016. The proposed levy support would represent a decrease from over 80% in historic operating support for the Zoo over the last 40 years.

ANIMAL care

During the pandemic, the animal health and nutrition department continued to provide for the collection with some reductions in preventative health procedures due to modified staffing and Covid 19 restrictions. This was to protect both staff and the animal collection. The vet department began working with Zoetis to receive restricted animal Covid 19 vaccines to provide some protection to the susceptible animals in our collection. During this time the department also continued its diligence in provided superior nutritional support to all collection animals.

For the year 2021 the veterinary department performed duties as follows:

Medical records written: 3756 for 877 individual animals

Most common medical procedures: Blood collection 132 samples

Radiographs: 54 studies

Preshipment examinations: 30 exams

Prescriptions written: 2445 for 862 individual animals

Anesthesia performed: 166 times for 111 individual animals

Diagnostic samples collected: 3,893 from 1,218 individual animals

Laboratory testing in house: 22,899 from 1,192 individual animals

Laboratory testing outside lab: 1,278 from 271 individual animals

Pathology samples submitted: 326 samples from 306 individual animals

Breeding and reintroducing endangered Mitchell’s Satyr butterflies to restored wetland sites.

Rescue-rearing and releasing Piping Plovers from abandoned nests at Sleeping Bear Dunes State Park where the endangered birds congregate prior to migration.

Mexico & Ohio

Assisting threatened Monarch butterfly populations by creating summer habitats in our native prairies and rearing and releasing approximately 1,000 butterflies for their annual migration to over-wintering areas in Mexico.

Cuba

Working with the US Navy to use radio telemetry to track the habitat use and activity of the largest snake in the Caribbean, the Cuban boa.

Captive breeding, reintroduction and research of the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.

Rearing more than 500 Hellbender salamanders in conjunction with Penta Career Center for release into portions of their former range in eastern and southern Ohio.
