Dear Colleague, The New England Research Directors (NERDS) are proud to welcome you to the New England Regional Meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). Now in our 21st year, this meeting is the primary forum for presenting original emergency medicine research in the New England area.

The New England Regional Meeting is jointly sponsored by SAEM and the NERDS, whose institutional membership is listed below. This year’s meeting was organized by Maine Medical Center, an affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine.

2017 SAEM New England Regional Meeting GENERAL INFORMATION SAEM MISSION The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) is dedicated to the improvement of care of the acutely ill and injured patient by improving research and education. To achieve this mission, SAEM influences health policy through forums, publications, interorganizational collaboration, policy development, and consultation services for physicians, teachers, researchers, and students. SAEM represents excellence and leadership in academic emergency medicine, and its values include idealism and quality in all endeavors, nurturing and camaraderie and diversity among members, as well as creative and symbiotic interactions with other organizations.

MEETING OBJECTIVES In keeping with the mission of SAEM, the New England Regional Meeting aims to provide emergency medicine residents and faculty the opportunity to present their original research in a forum that will foster development and productivity of new researchers in emergency medicine.

2017 SAEM New England Regional Meeting KEYNOTE ADDRESS (8:15 – 9:00 AM) Ballroom “Physician Vitality and Wellness: Achieving Joy in the Practice of Medicine” Presented by: Steven B. Bird, MD Professor of Emergency Medicine Vice Chair of Education Residency Program Director University of Massachusetts Medical School Dr. Steven Bird is Professor of Emergency Medicine, Vice Chair of Education, and Residency Program Director at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Bird also serves as the current Secretary-Treasurer of SAEM. Dr. Bird graduated from Yale University in 1991, where he earned a degree cum laude in biology and worked in the laboratory of Dr. Sidney Altman, winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Dr. Bird graduated AOA from Northwestern University Medical School in 1995, followed by training in neurosurgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego until 1997. He then completed 6 months of flight school in Pensacola, Florida, before being deployed to Okinawa, Japan as a flight surgeon with a Marine Corps squadron of C-130 aircraft. After two years in Japan, Dr. Bird resigned from the Navy (and from neurosurgery), and entered residency training in emergency medicine at UMass, followed by a fellowship in medical toxicology also at UMass.

Dr. Bird has a passion for cycling, his family, and helping residents and junior faculty meet and exceed their own expectations.

Lecture Objectives: At the end of this activity, participants will be able to: 1. identify domains which impact physician wellness and burnout; and 2. understand evidence-based approaches to decreasing physician burnout.
