Baseball

An incredible season of victory halted abruptly as the baseball team lost to Plymouth Whitemarsh in the second round of the District I Tournament. This was the first defeat in twelve games for the Central League champions.

Third baseman Steve Compton was probably the team's biggest and strongest player. In true form he knocked in 2 runs in a 7-2 win over Radnor.

"Convincing" and "overwhelming" were the words to describe the Lacrosse State Champs. The boys lacrosse team ran, passed, and shot their way to Central League victory and onto a state championship with an 11-4 win over Henderson High School.

The squad scored an average of 8 goals per game and allowed the opposition an average of 3.35, while running up a 135-57 bulge in goals scored. Four team members were named All-State and All-Central League members: Jerry Hood, Dave Ulmer, Rob Corner, and Mike Siano.

Girls' lacrosse

This year the girls' lacrosse team was coached by Mrs. Caracci. This was her first time coaching the Springfield team. Both the team and coach had a lot to learn from each other. Although their record did not show it, the girls put forth a lot of hard work and determination as they practiced every day after school on Halderman field.

Boys' Tennis

The boys' tennis team was led by Coaches Jim Hornaday and Les Taylor. Top seeded single players were Seniors Jeff Everett, Scott Hemphill, and Ira Disman, and Junior Jim Hanrahan. In the final meet against Radnor, Springfield was defeated to end its season with a 7 - 4 overall record and a 4 - 4 league record.

Girls' Golf

Rolling Green, a premier golf course in the Philadelphia area, hosted the girls' golf team.

Success was the password for the boys' track team. Second in the District Championships, the team had seven members qualify for the District Meet.

Tim Jefferson distinguished himself as being the only Cougar to qualify for two District events.

He made the semi-finals in the 100 meter dash and placed fourth in the 200 meter dash.

The future seems promising as Freshman Mike Stumpf passed the 4:33 standard in the 1600 meter run.

Spring Track The 1982 girls' track season was a successful one. The overall record of 5 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie was their best record in years.

District I Championships found Judy Gaines and Peggy Foley competing in the 300 meter low hurdles, Jenny Bupp in the long and triple jumps, Piffy McGuigan in the 3200 meter run, Cindy Hilaman in the 400 meter dash, and Stacey Flecknoe in the high jump.

At the Delco Championship Meet April 30 and May 1, the team finished 3rd in Division II. Jenny Bupp won the long jump with the best overall jump in the county. At the final season meet in May the girls defeated Marple Newtown for the first time in 5 years and tied Lower Merion. This was the first time Lower Merion did not defeat the Springfield girls' track team.

Florida Band Trip

Twenty-one hours by train and five organizations of the music department found themselves in Orlando, Florida. Their destination was an adjudication sponsored by the International Music Festivals on May 8.

An adjudication is an evaluation and such was given to the band, orchestra, Cougarettes, rifles and silks units. The band brought home a bronze medal and the orchestra a silver.

Capacity audiences thrilled to the horror of an evening with the Count from Transylvania as Dracula rounded out the season offerings of STW. The show itself reflected not just the talents of the performers, but it showed the ingenuity of the stage crew as a bat flew, candlesticks moved, fog and mist rolled across the stage, and Dracula drank deep the blood of life.

Junior Prom The biggest event of the year for the eleventh graders was the Junior Prom, held in the school cafeteria on Saturday night, April 17. Couples walked through the extravagantly decorated hallway that the class officers and members created. The focal point of the decorations was a fountain surrounded by many baskets of flowers. Music for the evening was provided

by NO FINER SOUND. Highlighting the music was the band's rendition of "Open Arms," the theme song.

Senior Party The final meeting of the Class of '82 was held at L & MCaterers on June 10, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 :00 p.m. This was the last event of the year when all seniors could get together to sign yearbooks, reminisce about the last four years, talk about college plans, or just have fun.

Seniors enjoyed a buffet dinner and later danced the evening away to the music of SHYTOWN.

On Friday evening, June 4, senior class members and their dates arrived at the Falcon House for the big event of the year.

The evening began with dinner and ended with dancing to the music of WHALE. Students were dressed in their finest and many of the boys were wearing top hats and tails. Although a heavy downpour greeted the students, their spirits were not dampened by it.

Commencement

Since the beginning of school in September, all seniors were looking forward to June 11. This was the date of commencement exercises held at the Sun Center. Prior to the ceremony, seniors were fitted for caps and gowns, picked commencement partners, and attended a special rehearsal.

Academic Honor Seniors Joseph Shields, Jean Watts, Karen Ginn, Gail Reganato, Ellen Arch, and Joceyln Fowler presented the main address. Class officer Pete Swayze presented School Board President Thomas Williams with the class banner and the class gift of a tree and floral arrangement for the cafeteria courtyard.

Following the presentation of diplomas was the announcement of scholarships and special awards. The highlight was the presentation of the James W. Braunsdorf Memorial Scholarship to Jennifer Moore.

Acknowledgments Last year when we agreed to be the editors of this book, we did not realize the incredible amount of work that was in store for us. We put in a lot of time and effort to create what we felt would be an accurate account of the 1982 school year.
