Lebanon Opera House – 2021 Season

Page 1

W ELCO M E TO L EB A N O N O PER A H O USE Confession: I own a ridiculous number of black t-shirts. Most of these shirts are overpriced mementos which serve as reminders of concert experiences that have shaped my life. I’ve even purchased quite a few at LOH shows; I love seeing Lebanon listed alongside stops in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Montreal. I’m equally proud of our ability to attract world-class touring artists and our capacity to showcase the incredible talents of our Upper Valley neighbors and students in the Lebanon school district.

Although the LOH stage is currently dark, we are lighting the way through our mission-driven efforts to build, bind, and brighten this community through the arts. In the near-term, we are exploring a variety of innovative ways to safely connect audiences with artists: whether online or through socially-distanced live events. At the same time, we are setting our sights on the future as planning for LOH’s centennial in 2024 begins in earnest this season. Our aim is to create models that will build a strong foundation for the next 100 years. In the meantime, we must turn to you—our generous patrons—to help LOH thrive during this prolonged intermission. We rely heavily on ticket revenue and rental income (typically 44% of our annual budget) which has been nonexistent since the COVID-19 shutdown last March. Please consider joining the growing list of supporters found in this brochure by offering a tax-deductible gift in support of our Annual Fund. Thanks to the Byrne Foundation, your contribution can have twice the impact! Mrs. Byrne has once again challenged us to raise $75,000 by December 31 which she’ll match dollar-for-dollar. We look forward to the day when we can return fully to our role as the Upper Valley’s hub for the performing arts; a time when merchandise stands selling $40 concert shirts will be a welcome sight.

Recently, I purchased the Save Our Stages shirt pictured here from the National Independent Venue Association. NIVA was formed last spring as a response to the devastating nationwide shutdown of independent venues like LOH. The group has been advocating tirelessly for these entertainment hubs which are critical to bolstering local economies as employers, tourism destinations, and revenue generators for neighboring businesses. Independent venues exist in every state across the country; we were the first to close and will be among the last to reopen.

With appreciation,

Joe Clifford, Executive Director

COMMUNIT Y PARTNERS

LEBANON OPERA HOUSE: THE UPPER VALLEY’S STAGE Each season, a dozen community arts groups set up residence on the LOH stage. Our house becomes their home and we’re proud to uphold a 96-year commitment to supporting community participation in the arts. OPERA NORTH

UPPER VALLEY MUSIC CENTER

The region’s premier professional summer music festival. It is the only full-time professional opera company serving NH, VT, and ME.

Two of the Lebanon-based community music school’s resident ensembles (Upper Valley Chamber Orchestra and Juneberry Community Chorus) now offer public performances at LOH.

NORTH COUNTRY COMMUNITY THEATRE/NCCT TEENS

CITY CENTER BALLET City Center’s artistic team combines the talents of Upper Valley students with international guest artists to produce large-scale productions at LOH.

Since 1973, NCCT has produced quality community theater productions for adults and young people.

LEBANON SCHOOL DISTRICT/SAU 88

THE DANCE COLLECTIVE

LOH provides a safe and professional environment for staging many of the district’s instrumental, vocal, and theater productions.

Through patient and positive methods, TDC choreographers encourage young dancers to explore their love of movement.

TRUMBULL HALL TROUPE

RAQS SALAAM DANCE THEATER

Founded in 2004 by Jodi Picoult and Marjorie Rose to provide kids with a fun, educational theater experience with proceeds benefiting children in need.

This 60-member performance group—whose name means “dances of peace and greetings” in Arabic— focuses on global folk dance styles.

NORTH COUNTRY CHORDSMEN

REVELS NORTH

The Upper Valley’s resident barbershop-style chorus presents playful programs of a cappella entertainment for audiences of all ages.

Best known for its annual Christmas Revels program, LOH’s newest partner provides year-round multigenerational programming celebrating the power of traditional song, dance, storytelling, and ritual.

UPPER VALLEY COMMUNITY BAND A proud part of the region’s musical heritage, UVCB’s 70 musicians perform at parades and seasonal events, including twice-yearly concerts on the LOH stage.

DANCERS’ CORNER Active studio with students as young as two years old teaches tap, jazz, hip hop, acrobatics, and more.

For more information about upcoming performances, visit lebanonoperahouse.org or call 603.448.0400.

HISTORY

Lebanon Opera House has been the cultural center for the city of Lebanon and surrounding communities since it was originally built in the middle of Colburn Park in 1792, where it remained until it was moved to its current location in 1851. While the building was unscathed during a major fire in 1887, it did burn to the ground in 1923. Over the next year, a new brick building was constructed and that building still stands today.

The facilities proved inadequate, however, and further shows refused to play in the theater. It was only after an extensive renovation to City Hall in 1975 and a pre-Broadway run of Moss Hart’s Light up the Sky that professional tours embraced LOH.

The theater has always shared space with the City of Lebanon. Along with municipal offices, LOH has housed the Grafton County Superior Court, the police department with jail cells, a gymnasium, and a bicycle rink. The venue has also been popular for political rallies, hosting Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and presidential candidates from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama.

In 1991 the Lebanon City Council established the Lebanon Opera House Improvement Corporation, a nonprofit dedicated to maintaining LOH as a multifaceted community resource. The organization continued to grow and in 2001 LOH successfully completed another comprehensive physical renovation, financially supported by over 1,000 individuals, foundations, and local companies. Improvements included reupholstered seats and refinished floors, while an addition greatly expanded the backstage and artist lounge areas.

Along with live entertainment, movies have been shown in LOH since 1925. In the early 1950s, a renovation turned the venue into the “most modern of motion picture theaters.” As multiplexes gained popularity, LOH fell into a bit of disrepair although it continued showing films into the 1970s.

The community came together again a decade later to donate more than $500,000 to the organization’s sustainability campaign. These funds allowed LOH to truly become a home for performing arts throughout the entire Upper Valley and create a sustainable business model for the future.

In 1969, Lebanon High School’s music director Ralph Bowie worked with a team of community members to fix up the space and use it for the high school musicals. Together with Jack O’Connell, for whom the theater is named, Ralph worked with Dartmouth College to present several professional productions.

Today, LOH continues to present exciting touring artists and prides itself on providing essential space and services to local arts groups, nonprofit organizations and schools.

THAT’S A WRAP! The 2019/2020 season ended abruptly but we’re thankful for the talented artists —including Grammy and Emmy winners, and Upper Valley neighbors of all ages— who graced the LOH stage before our COVID-related shutdown.

THIS INTERMISSION WILL END. EVENTUALLY. We look forward to the day when we can return fully to our role as a vital hub for the performing arts. MANY THANKS TO THE HUNDREDS OF DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO PLAYED A STARRING ROLE IN OUR SUCCESS THIS PAST SEASON.
