The Best Wreck Is the One You Never Had home smiling. No runaway stock. No broken axle on the shoulder. No midnight search party with headlamps. No bridle tied together with baling twine and salty language. No emergency vet call because someone missed what the horse had been saying all day.

In short, nothing happened. Smooth miles are usually earned long before the truck leaves the driveway.

They are earned when you grease bearings in the barn instead of beside the road. They are earned when you teach a horse to load during a slow afternoon instead of in a thunderstorm on departure day. They are earned when you check cinches, look at shoes, and watch the weather. They are earned when you turn back early instead of pressing on to prove a point no mule cares about.

how much you can progress.

Western Dressage is all about riding with accuracy, which means you must be correct so that your horse stays on the path of figures, transitions, and what you are asking the each gait. Starting with Intro Level, only Walk and Jog, Basic level, which is the best was to start or improve your lope through Level 1-5, each level has new requirements to learn and is a gradual progression of advancing your riding skills for your horse! No reason to feel it is too difficult. There is a level for every horse and rider.

Horses feel that immediately.

Not because they're judging us, but because nervous systems are always in conversation with one another. One of the most important shifts in my own work has been realizing that connection often returns more easily when pressure decreases rather than increases. That doesn't mean becoming passive or permissive. It means staying organized enough internally that your horse doesn't feel emotionally pursued.

CONNECTION DEEPENS THROUGH RHYTHM, NOT PRESSURE

There's a rhythm to good work with horses that simply cannot be forced. It includes moments of listening, moments of pause, and moments where nothing outwardly impressive is happening at all. Those quieter moments? That's often where the deepest trust is built.

Taking The Plunge

The healing process was long, but Rocket did eventually heal. Following his restarting as a riding horse we learned together. Being a cart horse, he hadn’t been ridden before retraining. I had participated in lessons on school ponies, but was still a beginner, riding in my oversized slick seat saddle when we began working together.

He is hands down the bumpiest horse I have ridden and had a bad habit of bolting on the trainer’s lunge line with me aboard. Despite it, I grew up loving him (and quite a few others joined along the way). Rocket never went lame again on his ‘bad’ leg, and in fact went to trail class at the county fair a few years later. Where of course, it stormed…

Rocket was afraid of water for years, associating it with the puddles on the day of his accident. Not afraid of rain, or a hose bath, but of standing water in particular. One day at the fair I watched with amusement as my mother forgot this fact, walking ahead of him and through a large puddle which ran the width of the path. She got to the end of the rope and found that Rocket was no longer with
