With some students, I’ve literally taken their hands and guided them through a knot so they could feel what right felt like. Join the Michigan Trail Riders Association for Our September Criss Cross Ride!
September 5–27, 2026
Saddle up and join the Michigan Trail Riders Association for an unforgettable September adventure through the beautiful trails of Northern Michigan! This year’s event is especially meaningful, as it will be our last Criss Cross Ride—for now. If you’ve ever wanted to experience this unique ride, now is the time! Whether you’ve looking to complete one section, ride across Michigan, or challenge yourself with the entire route, there’s an adventure waiting for you.
Trophy Option #1 – North to South Spur Ride
Arrive at Stoney Creek Trail Camp on September 5 and ride approximately 207 miles, finishing at Cadillac Trail Camp on September 15. This route covers our North to South Spur Section, taking you through some of Michigan’s finest trail systems while earning your trophy.
Trophy Option #2 – Across Michigan
Arrive at Garey Lake Trail Camp on September 16 and begin an incredible cross-state journey. Ride into Lake Michigan on September 17, then travel approximately 238 miles across the state, finishing at Lake Huron on September 27. Few horseback adventures offer the opportunity to ride from one Great Lake to another!
Looking to accomplish something truly extraordinary? Join a handful of dedicated riders and complete both rides for a total of approximately 445 miles! Riders who complete the entire Criss Cross will earn a special trophy recognizing this remarkable achievement.
Can’t ride the entire event? No problem! One of the best parts of MTRA rides is their flexibility. Join us for a day, a weekend, several days, or the entire adventure. Ride camp-to-camp or explore the beautiful circle rides available from each camp. No matter how long you ride, you’ll experience some of the best trails Northern Michigan has to offer.
The Michigan Trail Riders Association is more than organized trail rides—it’s a community of horse enthusiasts who share a love of horses, camping, beautiful trails, and lasting friendships. Whether you’re a longtime member or joining us for your first ride, you’ll be welcomed by fellow riders who enjoy the adventure as much as the destination.
Registration is now open at mtra.org. As always, participants must be current MTRA members to ride in our organized events. If you’re not already a member, we’d love to have you join us!

But the best part comes when someone sends me a photograph of a cinch they made. Sometimes it’s a first attempt and a bit rough. Without fail, they point out every flaw before I say anything because we are remarkably good at seeing the tiny imperfections in our own work. (If I write another cinch book, I’ll have to remember to include photos of my first cinches, but that’s a different story.)
What I see in their work is something very different. I see someone who started with an empty loom, some cordage, and a handful of hardware and made a useful piece of equipment with their own hands. I see the satisfaction that comes from learning a skill instead of simply buying another piece of tack, and most of all, I see a cinch that will soon be used on a horse or mule.
