CONGRATS SHARON GREENE! Sharon Greene, freelance reporter and equestrian columnist for The Oakland Press, received the 2014 Media Advocate Award from the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association at its annual convention held January 21-24 in Traverse City, MI. The successful nomination was submitted by Oakland County Parks and Recreation on behalf of Greene, a lifelong equestrian and author of the weekly newspaper column “Horsin' Around”, who has been an enthusiastic advocate of the parks system. Her stories often showcase Oakland County Parks, most notably riding trails and equestrian activities. “The award is certainly sweet but not necessary because it's both an honor and joy to write about our awesome Oakland County Parks. What a blessing that they are listening to the residents and making special places for us today and for generations to come,” Greene said. “Sharon truly is a grassroots supporter of recreation and preservation,” Supervisor of Parks and Recreation Planning Jon Noyes said. Greene received an MRPA Community Service Award in 2011 for her work in founding the Highland Equestrian Conservancy, being an instrumental team member in the acquisition of Highland Oaks County Park and developing trail connectivity throughout Oakland County. For more information about Oakland County Parks visit DestinationOakland.com, find Oakland County Parks and Recreation on Facebook or Twitter @DestinationOak.

WORKING TOGETHER The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. (USPC) have begun to outline plans to strengthen their current Alliance Partnership. Both organizations acknowledge that establishing an educational alliance partnership will ultimately benefit the sport, especially in advancing the growth of youth initiatives and horsemanship. Representatives from USPC and USEF have met to broaden their understanding of each organization's capacities and resources, and to identify immediate opportunities for collaborative ventures and future initiatives. Moving forward, a prominent opportunity to work together will occur with the planning of the 2014 Adequan/ FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships as well as the Pony Club 2014 Festival, both take place at the Kentucky Horse Park in mid-July. “Pony Club is a wonderful organization, providing educational programs for equestrians of all ages in the areas of riding skill, horse care, team participation and sportsmanship,” said John Long, USEF CEO. “The USEF is honored and excited to work with Pony Club as the two organizations strive to grow and provide onramps to equestrian sport.” “We can only strengthen the equine industry as a whole by building strong working relationships” stated USPC CEO Kevin Price. “It seems only appropriate that USEF and USPC should be working together. We share the same broad aspiration to promote the safety and welfare of horses and riders, and to encourage interest and participation in equine ownership and equestrian sports. USPC, for past 60 years, has undertaken this effort through its educational programs and services.”

10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY New Hudson, MI, March 1, 2014: Sporthorse Saddlery Inc. is celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout the month of March, highlighted by a storewide 10% off sale for 10 days, March 14th to 23rd. The store offers a full line of clothing, equipment and supplies, specializing in the English riding styles of dressage, show hunters, jumpers, and three-day eventing, and is Michigan's largest of its kind. “We've got the whole gambit of events planned for our 'Birthday Celebration', including prizes, food, giveaways, special vendor visits, and more. We're doing a huge mailing of gift certificates to most of the local customers who have ever shopped with us. Our success is heavily dependent on repeat business from the local equestrian community, and we're excited to have an opportunity to thank everyone who became part of our Sporthorse family over our first 10 years,” said owner Nancy Bredeson. Their address is one of the few things that hasn't changed since 2004. They've added 2 large mobile stores, traveling to horseshows throughout Michigan, expanded floor space by 33%, and introduced a more upscale and inviting look to the displays of a large merchandise selection, which has grown by over 300%. E-mail, social media, and the web have become marketing mainstays. Their buying strategy has also evolved from safe and mainstream to an approach that pushes the envelope of equestrian fashion a bit, working to strike a balance between the conservative (34)

nature of the sport and the need to constantly offer something fresh and new to entice more frequent customer visits. “In addition to our loyal customers and knowledgeable, serviceoriented staff, I think another key to our success and longevity is our ability to identify trends in customer preferences and to adapt. We've seen most of our local competitors close their doors, largely because the way they'd always done business no longer worked for today's customer,” said Bredeson. For more information, please contact Sporthorse Saddlery Inc. at 248-486-5616 or visit www.SporthorseSaddlery.com

Horse Association & Club News BRIGHTON TRAIL RIDERS

Even though we're still firmly in Winter's grasp, we at least can check out the calendar and see that March is next on the agenda. Granted, that doesn't mean we'll have instant Spring, but we can start to look forward to waving goodbye to snow, ice and freezing temperatures. The BTRA Board of Directors is looking ahead to the warmer months, and we've nailed down most of our events for 2014. The official schedule will be included in our newsletter, which will be coming out soon, and will be posted on our website. Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for March 23rd, and we'll be electing new members to our Board. We had such a good time at RJ's Grill in Hamburg, which hosted our Christmas Party, that we've decided to hold the Annual Meeting there, too. As everyone in the equestrian community knows, the MHC Expo is coming up and BTRA will have a table in the Trails Room. We'll have representative at the table during all Expo hours and we'll be anxious to tell folks about our organization and the Brighton Recreation Area. We'll also have materials to distribute, including our newsletter, BTRA brochures, and trail maps. What has us really excited is the progress that's been made in plans for the renovation of the Brighton Horseman's Camp. The concerns we've had related to the camp have been discussed with DNR officials for several years and frankly, we've been pretty discouraged at times. However, real progress started to be made last summer and with the involvement of additional DNR personnel, we now have a firm plan of action. As soon as the weather breaks, work will begin on three big projects. A water line will be run from the nearby staging area, which has had an electric water pump for several years (another BTRA/DNR project!) and a spigot

will be installed in the campground proper. All campers will have to do is turn on the spigot (no pumping needed) and fresh cool water will be available for thirsty horses and riders. The second project will entail major improvements in the access road to the campsites. Heavy equipment will be brought in for road grading and approximately 800 tons of gravel will be applied to the road. Consequently, the road surface will be considerably smoother and drainage will be enhanced. Diseased and dead trees adjoining the road will also be removed. Finally, access to the sites will be made easier. The angle of ascent to the sites will be reduced through excavation work and smoothing of some of the sites will take place. No need to worry about your trailer bottoming out when you drive onto a site! We want to thank the DNR for their response to our concerns and willingness to work with us. This kind of teamwork makes everyone happy and leads to a much better experience for stakeholders and members of the riding public. So, plan to camp at Brighton this year! We have a great staging area, beautiful and well-maintained trails and now, an improved campground will await you.

special event area. We are waiting approval for this project. Our pavilion will be on the agenda this season. Approval bugs have been worked out with the DNR engineer. This will be a great place to get together at trailhead staging area for lunch, etc. A hitching rail around the pavilion will be installed by the club at a later date. This project has already been paid for by the club and a DNR grant. Trail projects will include maintenance and attention to some muddy sections along the River trail. Proposed by-pass or raised bed trail sections will be discussed with the DNR after the snow melts for problem areas to be re-examined. We are excited to announce the campout information for 2014. Our 2nd Annual Mother's Day campout will be May 9, 10, and 11. Campsites will be limited to 25 sites. These will be large sites with picket poles and some trees available. Corrals and electric fences may be used also. Cost will be $20 per person per weekend, 17 and under free or $40/family/weekend. Sites will be limited to 1 rig/2 vehicles/ 4 people/4 horses. Please preregister/prepay by May 1st to get your spot. No refunds as it is necessary for the club to cover permit and fee cost for this event. Water, potties and manure disposal will be provided. A potluck supper can be enjoyed on Saturday. Our 2nd campout will be the Annual Fall Equestrian Campout. This year we are trying something NEW!!The Dates for this will be September 19-28. Yes, that right, a 9 day camping event! This is your chance to come and enjoy all or part of this special event. There will not be a set limit on sites, with potties, water and manure disposal provided. All registration is prepay. Price for all 9 days is $100/site. You may register for any days @ $15/site/day. Each site will allow 1 rig/2 vehicles/4

Although I am writing this for the March issue, it's February and I'm sitting here looking out the window at my front yard covered in that danged white stuff imagining that it is going to melt ... someday. March - in like a lion and out like a lamb. I sure am hoping that it comes in like a lamb too. In the meantime, I'm dreaming of all the things my horse and I are going to do this summer. By the time you've read this, you will have received your election ballot for our new board members and officers and have voted. As of this writing, I don't have the results yet but our new slate will take office at the Annual Banquet on March 1. I want to welcome our new board members and say thank you for stepping up and helping us run our club. I also want to say thank you to our retiring board members: Larry Bireta, Judy WWW.SADDLEUPMAG.COM

Seifried, and Barb Berta. It's been wonderful having you on the board and we couldn't have done it so well without you. All the hard work and effort you've put in at events and in shaping KTRA have been very much appreciated by your fellow board members and our membership at large. THANK YOU! Also upcoming this year will be our Member Appreciation Day on April 26. Appreciation Day is our way of saying thanks to our members. The event will include a free lunch and activities. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please contact Pattie at perushak@aol.com. We will be sending out a flyer at the end of March or beginning of April with details. A flyer will also be posted on our website and on our Facebook page. Start getting that camping gear ready. Our spring campout this year will be held from May 16-May 18 at Kensington Metropark. Details will be coming out shortly. And remember, when you do get out on the trails this winter, you can report a trail problem on www.kensingtontrailriders.org. We appreciate it when you help us keep our trails clear! Don't forget to visit our website and like our Facebook page. Happy Trails until we meet again... MI COMPETITIVE MOUNTED ORIENTEERING

What a great time everyone had at the annual awards banquet. The weather was cold but the roads were clear and that allowed for safe travels. We had a chance to catch up, share miserable winter stories and get excited about the coming season. The awards committee did a phenomenal job of making sure everyone got the award they wanted. Their dedication to the club and hours of preparation are greatly appreciated. Although many awards were

SLEEPY HOLLOW TRAIL RIDERS

given, here are a few of the highlights: First place long course went to Wild Women, Tame Horses and A Stud who also received National Reserve Team. Great job Becki, Johnnie and Dustin! First place for the short course was earned by The Little Buckaroos, a great mom and son team who never cease to amaze us, way to go Colleen and Austin! The ever youthful Royla Westphal received first place individual for the long course and is also Reserve National Female! Great job Royla, and congratulations on earning 2,500 lifetime points. She is an inspiration to us all. The future is in our youth and the first place junior award went to Katelyn Potter who is also National Runner Up. Katelyn was a dedicated rider and also earned the honor of Rooky of the Year. It was a close race for horse of the year and it ended in a tie. Deb Schrock's horse Ice tied with her teammate Trudi Reurink's horse Sensational Rambo Cowboy. I guess when you are on the same team it is best when it ends in a tie! We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Lansing Stallion Expo. Our booth will be in the trail riders section and we love to talk about our sport. Currently we have eight weekends scheduled at several different locations. Be sure to check out our schedule at micmo.org or peek at the events schedule in Saddle Up! Magazine. The first ride will be on May 17th and 18th at Hadley Hill. This is in the Ortonville Recreation Area and is a benefit for OREA. If you have questions about this ride you can contact Steve Keim and Vera Kraft at Fletchrider@netzero.net or 810.793.4558. We will also be having a meeting at the Saturday night potluck. Please mark your calendars and come learn how to CMO with a great group of horse people.

What a blustery snowy day for our Annual Meeting held February 1st. We still had a good turn out for the social hour, potluck meeting and auction. Danny Crampton drove down from Midland to pick his guitar for us. Mike Stinson and Pat Brown joined him and sang away the hour. Thanks! The attending members received insulated tall cups with our SHTRA logo from Sleezy Barb Horseware! Adult sippy cups! Thanks Barb! Table decorations were done by Linda Kraai and given to lucky members. After the wonderful potluck dinner complete with BBQ pulled pork furnished by Myron and Dianne Karsten, we held a short meeting to elect 2014 Bd. Members. Returning members are Mike Woods, Chanda Donnan, Linda Kraai, Val Lau, Mary Mallory and new to the Bd. Carol J. Ray! Congrats! Ten year member acknowledgments went to Barb Boron, Marsha Korroch, Linda Kraai and Janet Phillips. That brings a total of 51 members that have ten or more years with SHTRA! The drawing for the door prize- a free membership went to Karen Kilpatrick. The paid up membership cash drawing was won by Sue Chant. We surprised Don and Pat Brown as the Volunteers of 2013 with congratulatory jackets. They donate equipment and numerous hours making sure our trails, events and paper work are in order. Don Brown and Dave Kline handled the auction of donated items. SHTRA would like to thank the following businesses and for their generous items or services given for the auction: Bee's Automotive, Clinton Vet Services, Dr. Roger Massa, DO, Ovid Farmers Elevator, Sleezy Barb Horsewear, Wire Horse, Tom's Western Store and Tractor Supply of Owosso and St. Johns. Thanks to members Jim and Juanita Atkinson and Chuck (43)

Horse Association & Club News WEST MI APPALOOSA REG. I'm beginning to think this is the winter without end! It's a good thing we had our WMAR Awards Banquet to break up the monotony of snow, ice, cold, and repeat. Once again, many great awards were given out to deserving exhibitors. You can check out our Facebook page for some photos. The WMAR Red, White & Blue show will have a new date – June 7-8 at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason, MI. This later date will, hopefully, allow a little break for those that hit the three show run first thing in the spring and allow them to come back up to Mason to our show. Keep in mind that stalls still need to be pre-paid at Mason and there is no showing out of the trailer. All horses need stalls. This show will again be offering All Breed classes. These All Breed classes have been approved to be part of the Ingham County Open Show Circuit for 2014 for the purpose of earning points towards their year end awards. Some additional news for our show at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason: their new hoop barn indoor practice arena should be up and ready to use for our show. We look forward to having a dry place to work, no matter what the weather! The WMAR State show will be back in Centreville, MI, for July 19 & 20, 2014 with stalls there also needing to be pre-paid. Stalls in the two barns closest to the arena will cost $40.00 and

the rest of the stalls are priced at $35.00. We are hoping that some more new stalls will be available to us. Our other three WMAR “approved” shows are the MApHA Spring show May 10-11 at Mason, the MApHA Summer Sizzler show August 2-3 and the MApHA Classic show August 22-24, the latter two being held at the MSU Pavilion. I will be handling all stalls for both WMAR and MApHA shows again this year and “first checks received, first reserved” is how it's going to be run! Only shows at Mason and Centreville need to be pre-paid. Shows at MSU do NOT need to be pre-paid, so please do not send me any checks for MSU shows. Remember to make checks out to the appropriate clubs, too. As much as I appreciate some of you sending checks in my name, the treasurers would be sure to catch up with me if I cashed them and went shopping! WMAR will also be running the Open Horse Incentive Program. For $35.00 per division, Halter, Judged Performance & Gymkhana, your accumulated WMAR points will be turned into cash at the end of the year. 100% of all monies are paid back at the banquet. This is a nice way to earn some cash from your showing endeavors. Forms are available on the WMAR website. To stay up to date on the latest happenings, be sure to check out the WMAR website at www.wmarapp.org or follow our Facebook page, WMAR. If you

because it has already proven successful for centuries. When I learned to ride in the dressage saddle, I would go home and ride Western the same way. NO difference! It really works! Western riders are looking to train a willing horse and not train through submission. Harmony with the horse is what horse owners want whether they are a recreational rider or show ring competitor. This is the beauty of western dressage and why it is going to grow and become even more popular. The best part of western dressage is that it is helps people learn the correct ethics of horsemanship and how to train a willing horse. The bottom line is that people want to learn more about correct riding and training. Dressage will give you the tools to achieve this correctness. It is all in following the Training Pyramid and the dressage levels. There are western dressage tests at http://westerndressageassociat

• PALM PARTNERSHIP TRAINING™ • Building a Partnership with Your Horse

Why Is Western Dressage Such a Popular New Discipline? By Lynn Palm www.LynnPalm.com • 1-800-503-2824

This article really begins with a story... In 1997, I tried to upgrade my business of training and competing with horses in multiple disciplines into something else by changing my approach to basic training. I tried to use the term "Dressage Principles" as a basis for Palm Partnership Training's teaching and education guidelines. Using the word "dressage" hurt our educational merit in the beginning. I would have people come up to me at horse expos, and write letters, emails, and Facebook messages noting that they were Western riders and “didn't do” dressage. Others said that dressage is too difficult to ride, and they could never achieve it. People would even make comments saying, “I am a trail rider, and I don't ride dressage!” Hearing this over and over made Cyril, Marie-Frances and me all agree we shouldn't use the term "Dressage Principles" as a basis for our training and teaching methods at that time. So we didn't. Ironically, 15 years later people started coming to us and saying things like, "We take dressage lessons and ride western!" and "I

want to learn dressage because I know it is going to make me a better rider for my horse." We agree it wasn't the right time back then to introduce such a strong term, but now it is part of the Palm Partnership Training fundamentals. Dressage principles truly allow you to become the best partner for your horse! I am truly blessed to have dressage as my first influence in riding and training horses. Cyril also learned dressage as his basis for riding. Cyril is from Europe where dressage is taught to all riders before they advance to jumping or 3-day event riding. “Dressage" is a French word that means "training" a horse. It is the TRUE natural horsemanship of riding and training a horse, because it allows us to truly understand what the horse is telling us and how to tell the horse what we want. These are the main reasons why western riders are so excited about this new discipline. They are realizing all the natural horsemanship techniques that we Americans are coming up with are both good and bad. However, we should also follow the dressage principles of classical dressage

ion.org/. The perfect way to learn is to practice these tests. Western dressage is for all breeds of horses. It is for the first-time horse owner and for the owner who has had horses all his/her life. I love to hear horse owners say, "the more I ride and learn the more I realize how much more I don't know!" Dressage will fill that gap and give you inspiration. Lastly, dressage will give you wonderful challenges for riding correctly and with accuracy during riding tests. It is fun and is similar to the sport of figure skating. It is done with athleticism, which brings out beauty and grace. It reveals lightness and the ability to harmonize with the horse. I promise, if you ride a test, you will get hooked. Join us, and I promise you will love it.
