We’d love to brighten everybody’s day with beautiful flowers. I’ve owned the business for thirteen years, so I absolutely love what I do. It’s my passion.

Lincoln florist and gifts is located in beautiful downtown Lincoln — Lincoln Boulevard and Fifth Street. I actually started working for Lincoln florist and gifts as an ROP student. That program allowed me to connect with the local businesses.

I was placed with Lincoln Florist and Gifts and had the privilege of working with owner Georgiana and her daughters Denise and Jody. Georgiana was my mentor. That’s how it all started. I was 16 in

high school when I started. I’ve been doing it ever since.

I like the artistic part of the business. It’s amazing. I learned a lot from Georgiana, so I just took it and ran with it. Flowers to me, express feelings, express gratitude.

They will brighten someone’s day, lift somebody’s spirits. Depending on the occasion and flowers, we design in different ways and forms. It’s not just roses.

We carry a variety of different, unique flowers.

So my thing is tropicals. I love tropical foliage, bird of paradise, Ginger, and dendrobium orchids. We love the King Proteus. They’re absolutely gorgeous— exotic flowers. Unique foiliage adds the structure necessary to create unique designs. Sometimes it looks like you’re in a jungle.

If you do a tropical arrangement, you can actually have a feeling of being in Hawaii, with the birds of paradise and the Japonica leaves. And most tropicals just last forever.

So they get to enjoy their arrangement not only for a week or two, but for a month.

We have people call all the time to tell us their arrangement lasted for over a month.

Keeping Plants Happy FERTILIZE every month. Most plants like a little boost to keep them looking their best.

DEADHEAD SPENT BLOOMS Keep the blooms coming by removing spent blooms from your flowering plants.

ORCHIDS are a plant category of their own. Water orchids sparingly with ice cubes to prevent blooms dropping from over watering (one ice cube a week).

REMOVE DECORATIVE WRAPPERS as soon as possible. Drainage keeps plant roots happy.

LESS FREQUENT but deep watering is most effective. Don’t let your plant sit in standing water; let it drain after watering.

GET THE LIGHT RIGHT Place your plants near light but never in direct sunlight.

EXTENDING CUT FLOWER LIFE LOCATION MATTERS. Keep Flowers in a cool place and away from direct sunlight if possible. Avoid vents with blowing air.

PRESERVATIVE FEEDS THE BLOOMS. Add commercial plant food to the water every time you change the water.

TRIM OR REMOVE SPENT FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE. Keep your arrangement looking its best by taking out wilted blooms or leaves. This also prevents contamination of the water and increases the longevity of your arrangement.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WATER. Always remember to keep water levels up!

Change the water when cloudiness appears.

RECUT STEMS AFTER A FEW DAYS. Every few days, cut 1” from each stem at an angle to bypass clogged stems. Your flowers will draw water and the blooms will be happy longer.

BE MINDFUL OF CULTURE. Certain cultures have very specific traditions. For example, Muslims won’t appreciate a cross, and Eastern Orthodox place the highest value on white flowers.

PHOTOGRAPHS ADD A VISUAL PERSPECTIVE. A photo image of your Loved one in a wreath of flowers can be a fitting tribute.

REMEMBER THEIR PASSIONS OR THEIR CAREER. If you know specific details of passions of the Loved one, your florist can incorporate a symbol of those passions, such as a baseball cap, or golf club.

A Little Bit More. Recently a guy came in just as we were closing and said, “It’s my anniversary. What can I get for my wife?” Roses are nice, but let’s do something a little bit more. Let’s do something using lilies— longer lasting flowers. Let’s spice it up a little bit!

And then as I was designing them, he started looking around the shop and found a gift for her as well—a metal wine bottle holder. I added a little bow that matched the arrang;ement, and so he not only found flowers for her, but also a gift. He went away very happy.

On Sympathy Recently a customer brought in a picture of her mother wearing a pink shirt with hearts. I did a wreath with her picture in the center surrounded by pink roses and pink lilies. It was beautiful. They were delighted and filled with gratitude for us being able to put her picture in a beautiful setting of flowers. It’s very meaningful and it’s a good way to remember their loved ones.

Flowers lighten up a room and the beauty of the flowers actually make

people feel welcomed. So it actually softens, I think, the mood of people and relaxes them in a way because flowers are just so beautiful on their own that you can’t help but admire them.

On Weddings Sometimes flowers are the last thing people think of for their wedding. But you know what? It’s the most important thing!

That’s what people see when they arrive— flowers on tables or on the pews at the church. They also see the flowers that the bride and bridesmaids are holding. Flowers complete the beautiful elements of the ceremony.

The Jennifer Special: describing my favorite design We’re going to do something bright and colorful in a nice container that she can keep and use afterwards. For flowers, I’d use yellow Asiatic Lillys, hot pink carnations, and maybe some hot pink roses. I’d call this the Jennifer special— lots of bright flowers that pop pinks and yellow. Maybe add some orange in there.

We have beautiful orange crush roses that just absolutely make you feel wow.

On the Kitty Kat She is actually Ashley 2.0. She’s my second LINCOLNFLORISTANDGIFTS.COM

cat named Ashley. This Ashley needed a home and she’s actually the same type as my first cat— a long hair, Russian blue.

So it was meant to be. She’s eight years old and she just fits perfectly with us. She loves our shop. She’s our store mascot.
