President Ann Marie Krejcarek Dear Sacred Heart Community, As independent school educators, we are impelled to design and deliver a preeminent school experience for each student. With an exemplary leadership team and talented faculty, Convent & Stuart Hall defines what is best in education today and leverages an association with the international network of Sacred Heart schools to establish an identity that is both Independent & Interconnected. A Sacred Heart education focuses on each child’s total development: spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical.

We emphasize serious study and cultivate social responsibility with a view toward imbuing our students with a sense of purpose unique to the age in which they live. As affirmed by our founding Society, in seeking the timeless element in education, one must not adhere to a single program or method but match the education program to time and to place.

Three years ago, as a response to this charge, we established an ambitious strategic plan to more completely prepare our students to fully engage in their rapidly changing world. This imperative requires that our educational practices provide students with contemporary avenues of learning, and essential strategies for engaging with and expressing their ideas. New programming exemplifies what is Timely & Timeless, advancing a renewed focus on communication and critical thinking skills with enhanced course work in digital literacy and design, cultural competency, global language learning, STEM and the arts.

As you will see in the following pages, the plan is marked with multiple points of success. Our first Innovation Launch Grant competition drew 150 students who submitted 40 business ideas, three of which were awarded seed grants to fund implementation and scaling (p.37). We completed the three-year approval process for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and we have begun integrating this globally recognized programme into the K-12 curriculum (p.23). Our faculty participated in highly selective professional development programs—nationally and internationally—in support of curricular and programmatic highlights (p.47). And the space in which we activate this work now more fully reflects our aspirations for learning and engagement.

As originally crafted, the strategic plan was set for completion in five years. Through the devotion of the entire faculty and staff, and with eagerness to accomplish all that we desire for our community’s lived experience, we are on a trajectory to complete our plan a year ahead of schedule—by the end of the 2015-16 academic year. All this is possible through a culture of continued improvement and the generous spirit of our many supporters. Thanks to all who contribute and partner in achieving our strategic vision for the present and future of the Convent & Stuart Hall community.

Dr. Krejcarek has served as the K-12 educational leader of Convent & Stuart Hall since 2012. Previously, she served as Headmaster at Saint Andrew’s School in Florida. Her acclaimed educational philosophy places emphasis on international mindedness and experiential education, providing a path for students to become resilient, resourceful and engaged thinkers. The programming she brings forward at Convent & Stuart Hall includes the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, the annual Costa Rica experience, and the articulation of space as the third teacher in transforming learning environments. She believes in the power and partnership of the school experience to graduate students who, in the words of Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ, are “seriously begun on a wide basis,” as well as the importance of making each school day one filled with joy. “I believe that children grow and learn best in an environment that engenders a path to success making room for important imperfect beginnings along the way. School should be a place that encourages iteration and fortitude, which leads to mastery,” Ann Marie says. “Success is measured through a defined standard of excellence that includes a capacity to engage intellectually, functionally, socially and spiritually in a sophisticated, global society.”

Rachel Simpson

Rachel took the helm of Convent High School in 2013 as a familiar face in the community, having served as Dean at both Convent & Stuart Hall high schools. She started at Convent & Stuart Hall in 1996 as a French and English teacher and served as International Language Department Chair from 1999-2008.

Rachel displays a deep personal commitment to the power of the journey and, as an educator of young women, focuses on cultivating the leadership and self-advocacy that gives students the tools to “lean in” to their futures as agents of positive change. “I profoundly believe in the development of a culture in which it is powerful to be kind, and where grace and grit are not diametrically opposed forces,” she says.

Tony Farrell

Head, Stuart Hall High School M.A. English, Stanford University B.S. English, Stanford University

Tony began his career at Stuart Hall High School in 2003, teaching English, coaching basketball, and serving as Director of Admissions. Since 2009 he has served as Head of the boys’ high school, leading a significant expansion phase that has resulted in Stuart Hall’s recognition among the premier high schools in the country. Tony displays an enthusiastic and energetic commitment to providing a preeminent and dynamic academic experience that cultivates his students into young men of substance, courage, purpose and integrity. “I am proud of the powerful and positive impact that so many of our former students are making in college, grad school and beyond,” Tony says. “I am deeply grateful to be leading such an adroit faculty, who are experts in their respective fields and in developing the capacity of young men.”

Howard Levin

Director of Educational Innovation M.A. Curriculum & Instruction, University of Washington B.A. Social Studies Education, Western Washington University

Howard became Convent & Stuart Hall’s first Director of Educational Innovation in 2011, helping to shape technology and educational innovation as an academic department that informs its own curriculum and supports faculty in theirs. He implemented a 1-to-1 program for students in Grades 4-12 and has worked to help re-imagine the school’s approach to designing optimal learning environments.

Howard says he is moved by the innovative spirit of the faculty at Convent & Stuart Hall. “I am particularly proud to help the school build on its national reputation as one of the true leaders in modernizing and re-thinking learning spaces to maximize 21st century learning needs.” He came to Convent & Stuart Hall from Urban School of San Francisco, where he led that high school’s technology department and became well known for ground-breaking work in leading student-produced digital video oral histories.

Angela Taylor

Head, Convent Elementary School M.A. School Administration, University of Massachusetts B.A. Child Development, Spelman College

Angela joined Convent Elementary as Head of School in 2012, having served as Lower Form Dean at Stuart Hall for Boys since 2000. In the arc of Angela’s career prior to Stuart Hall she displayed classroom expertise at nearly every stage and grade level of elementary and middle school education at schools in Atlanta, Oakland and Boston. She devotes her energy to empowering each girl to take leadership and agency over her own learning, in a way that speaks to her personality and gifts, rather than the “boxes” to which girls are often assigned.

“I feel our students should be in an environment where they can channel active engagement and passion into risks, with new materials and new ideas,” she says. “The risk-taking may be messy, but ultimately it leads to results of higher worth.”

Jaime Dominguez

Head, Stuart Hall for Boys VP for Curriculum Alignment M.A. Educational Administration, Michigan State University B.S. Biology, Princeton University

Jaime has served as Head of Stuart Hall for Boys since 2005. He began his career as one of the early corps members of Teach for America, and he taught math and science in Austin and in London, where he also served as Middle School Administrator at the American School. Jaime says he loves working with students and creating an environment where each young man experiences a love of learning, fun and engagement. He appreciates that his faculty is well versed in best practices and pedagogy, balancing progressive approaches with foundational principles. “Ultimately,” Jaime says, “I feel passionately about starting our students on a pathway to becoming gentlemen who can lead with compassion and empathy.”

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives • Space renovations completed in spring 2014 redefine spaces for a wide range of student use.

• The expanded and redesigned Unkefer Spark Studio affords students and faculty space for prototyping and programming, robotics, engineering and design, video production and editing.

• The Beaux Arts Program, launched in 2014-15, supports exploration in fine and performing arts. Coursework, field trips, student performances, guest speakers, teaching artists, and exhibition of student work promote the arts and activate creative confidence in students.

• The academic team has implemented the development of a learner profile for every student.

• The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme application process culminated in an October 2015 visit by an IB verification team. Convent & Stuart Hall plans to offer the first IB courses in Fall 2016.

• A formalized Social Emotional Learning program is now fully integrated into the elementary school curriculum.

• A student wood and electronics shop in the garage space in Herbst House will provide space for prototype production.

• High school mathematics faculty reviewed and aligned the math sequence for both high schools and created new course flow and revised graduation requirements for 2015-16. The new course flow accelerates exposure to geometry and to calculus.

Prescriptive & Responsive School President Ann Marie Krejcarek defines the Convent & Stuart Hall curriculum as both prescriptive and responsive. The educational leadership team works with faculty to arrive at essential learning goals and outcomes, and teachers deliver these goals and outcomes with an attention to the growth edges of each student, accelerating individual learning when appropriate and tailoring the pace if necessary. The creation of a learner profile for each student allows teachers to develop a dynamic plan of action to maximize learning opportunities and personal growth.

Ann Marie asserts that students need to be internationally minded and culturally competent to fluidly interact with their counterparts from all over the world — now and in the future. The key benchmarks that the faculty set for students are based on national and international expectations for excellence, and incorporate standards from the top academically performing countries. Ann Marie emphasizes the importance of preparing students to be ready not only for college, but for life: “Rather than merely designing paths for each students’ next academic environment, a Convent & Stuart Hall education serves to prepare each child in a broad way.”

Convent & Stuart Hall prescribes a strong academic path for each student and is also poised to be responsive to changing needs and educational opportunities as they arise.

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives continued • The re-imagined spaces on the second and third floors of the Flood Mansion now house the high school’s Institutes for Humanities and Modern and Classical Languages, enhancing collaboration for both students and faculty.

• The accelerated math course for Convent Grades 5-8 has a 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio. New developmental groupings in Stuart Hall Grades 5-8 also reduced class sizes.

Middle form students also have access to “math lab” after school for questions and additional help.

• During summer 2015, members of the Educational Leadership Team attended conferences on the International Baccalaurate Diploma Programme to deepen their knowledge of the aspirations and goals of IB. • A pilot program sharing modern language with our youngest learners began in 2014-15 with kindergartners learning Mandarin and Spanish. Those students, now in Grade 1, are continuing their language studies.

• “Flexible Classroom Initiatives” with mobile screens, node chairs and white board walls populate dozens of classrooms, offering 360 degree learning spaces for maximum collaboration and differentiation.

• The Digital Literacy & Design program for elementary students encompasses the modes of learning in the Unkefer Spark Studio, and includes coding, robotics, multi-media production and design thinking.

• Starting fall 2015, the After School Program added a coding program to the speciality class offerings for Grades 3-4. ASP will also host Open Studio with Digital Literacy & Design coordinators on Mondays and Thursdays for tinkering, coding, and building.

Fluency & Mastery Recognizing that information and skill acquisition are merely building blocks of the learning process, Convent & Stuart Hall is committed to ensuring that every student is equipped to construct meaning from facts, figures and texts.

Deep understanding and guided practice lead to mastery for students. Knowing how to synthesize their understanding and articulate it in spoken and written form is a fluency we strive to impart in each student.

Convent & Stuart Hall believes that second language acquisition is integral to academic success across the curriculum. Formal instruction in a second or third language previously began in Grade 3, and the expansion to kindergarten was intentional. “Students’ cognitive development, and their academic journey, begin in pursuit of language,” says President Ann Marie Krejcarek. The comprehensive, balanced literacy curriculum starting in kindergarten provides a scaffolding of skills that builds upon the student’s ability to listen, speak, write and read. Adding second and third language exposure to the framework, even for the youngest learners, is a natural extension of their language formation. This philosophy is now reinforced with the introduction of Mandarin and Spanish to kindergarten and 1st grade students. So, too, is the idea that mathematics, and digital design (i.e. coding and computer programming) are also languages, with early literacy needed for future success.

A strong early foundation of discovery and inquiry means that students can develop fluency and mastery.

By middle form and high school, students begin to understand how they know what they know and gain the confidence to apply and integrate this understanding across all fields of study and areas of life.

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives continued • In February, the Tech Timeout challenged students in Grades 4-12 to forgo use of digital devices for 72 hours.

• New schedules for 2015-2016 added instructional hours for high school and middle form students.

• The publication of the Great Texts Canon Philosophy was complemented in spring 2015 by a series of curated lists that inspire reading across grades levels and across disciplines.

• An initiative to better present student work will lead to displays of student art throughout the year.

• The school installed two Wenger music practice rooms across from the Unkefer Spark Studio; the acoustically treated rooms allow for private or small-group music instruction or rehearsal space.

The Great Texts Canon Throughout 2014-15, Convent & Stuart Hall faculty worked collaboratively to develop the cornerstone Great Texts Canon and Philosophy, identifying the texts and mentor authors that inform the K-12 experience.

Curated lists, including “Girl Endorsed,” “Boy Tested,” “The President’s Middle Form Book Club” and “Faculty Summer Reading” are featured on the website, and illuminate the Great Texts philosophy in the current life of the school.

Beyond the ongoing work of curating lists of essential texts, the canon serves as an inspiration to look beyond the textbook. Convent & Stuart Hall’s exemplary faculty bring depth and expertise in their academic fields and teachers are adept at designing for their students’ unique paths to discovery and learning.

For example, Math Department Chair Ken Harrington also serves as an adjunct math professor at the University of San Francisco. This depth of experience has allowed him to curate a premier math program that expands beyond traditional textbook content, bringing to life unparalleled confidence and mastery in his students.

Ultimately, the ongoing development of the Great Texts Philosophy underlines the freedom and responsibility of Convent & Stuart Hall, as a preeminent independent school, to curate sources and inspirations for learning across academic fields. The Philosophy impels us to minimize reliance on static textbooks and instead to create for students aspirational “paths to” inquiry, reflection and discovery.

The Great Text Canon Philosophy At Convent & Stuart Hall, we believe that reading widely and rigorously across the curriculum is the pathway to critical thinking and the development of the intellectual and reflective self. We believe that an expansive reading list is the foundation stone for all students to develop the essential cultural literacy that crosses and connects all academic fields. To this end, our Great Texts Canon invites students to think critically, flexibly and passionately as engaged citizens of the world. The texts that guide this engagement are multi-genre, canonical, classic, historical, controversial, fantastical and more. They invite our students to appreciate the fact that the act of reading opens up a universe of meaning. Our comprehensive and flexible Grade 4-12 reading list engages topics that build a critical and varied perspective of the events, ideas, thoughts and emotions of centuries of human experience. As one school within a global network of schools, the selected texts represent many cultures and illuminate the human experience from multiple vantage points.

Organizational Alignment

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives • A K-12 Academic Council convened with representation from each academic discipline and serves as a “think tank” and collaborative body that has oversight of the K-12 academic curricular experience.

• Middle form faculties and administrators have aligned their curricular sequence and created an intentional pathway to the corresponding high school curriculum for the students who matriculate into Grade 9 at Convent & Stuart Hall.

• Integrated, collaborative and vertically aligned K-12 academic departments (department formation complete in Mathematics; Modern and Classical Languages; Library; Digital Literacy and Design; Religion, Theology and Spirituality; and Visual Arts) • A new schedule at the high schools allows for “ColLab,” the Collaboration Block. The period allows teachers to collaborate with other teachers, students to collaborate with other students, and teachers to collaborate with students. Neither overly prescribed, nor overly scheduled, this time encourages the time management and “use of time” skills that students will experience in college and beyond.

• The new Scholastic Media Director position works to expand, unify and refine the scholastic media offerings for middle form and high school students, including yearbook and newspapers.

Libraries: An Intellectual Powerhouse “The physical transformation of the Learning Commons over the past year has changed the way the librarians manage and interact with the collection and with the community,” says Amanda Walker CES’91, the K-12 Lead Librarian. Curation of the collection and differentiation within the library spaces has allowed for a new library model— one that encourages both consumption of information (stories; facts) and creation of knowledge (understanding). It is in this latter step—the application of information—that students are stretched to think critically, to draw conclusions, to apply knowledge to new situations, and to ethically participate as members of a social and intellectual network of learners.

To this end, the library program has also stretched. The newly aligned department is chaired by Amanda, who returned to the Hoffman Learning Commons after four years at Stuart Hall High School. This fall she is joined by two new librarians/archivists—Alyson Barrett-Ryan and Reba Sell— who both work on both campuses in support of the entire high school community. One of the department’s goals for the year is to align what had been two separate high school libraries into one library with two locations. Careful curation of the collection will allow for differentiation between, rather than duplication of, the resources on both campuses, as well as for a collection that better reflects the Great Text Canon. Circulation and collection analysis have informed another related shift, which is that resources and research instruction at the high school libraries will encompass the needs of Grades 7-8, where they are best served. In addition to information literacy instruction and collection development, the high school librarians will also be continuing and advancing the school archives in ways that invite connection to, and participation with, our history.

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives continued • Guest speakers who engaged the community in 2014-15 include: - Alfie Kohn, lecturer and author of 14 books including The Schools Our Children Deserve and The Homework Myth - Dr. Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, author of The Distraction Addiction - Mary Riemer, director of the short documentary, Sleeping with Siri - Susan Thomasson, teaching artist for the Lincoln Center and 2015 Hudson-Gibson Artist-in-Residence - Jacqueline Woodson, Coretta Scott King, Newberry Medal and National Book Award winning author - Dr. Lisa Miller, professor and director of the Clinical Psychology Program at Columbia University, Teachers College and author of The Spiritual Child - Ashanti Branch, creator of Taking off the Mask and featured in the film The Mask You Live In • Work is underway to align K-12 service and co-curricular opportunities. Newly aligned K-8 schedules for Convent & Stuart Hall allow time for a new selection of electives for middle form students, as well as for faculty collaboration.

• A focus on Convent athletics features alignment of the girls’ athletics program from Grades 5-12.

• Faculty who will be teaching courses as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in cross-division departments will meet regularly in 2015 in anticipation of implementing the program upon final approval. Representatives from the IB program conducted a site visit in October.

• Convent Elementary has successfully implemented a leadership structure that includes the Head of School, Middle Form Dean and Director of Studies.

• Convent Elementary revised its high school placement counseling program and appointed a new counselor to help parents and students through the process.

• The Admissions team is now a fully-aligned K-12 team.

• The library has been reimagined for the new Millennium, with the formation of a Library Science Department with aligned and shared resources.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Academic counseling on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is underway, and current sophomores may elect to take the programme for their final two years of high school. The curriculum comprises six subject groups: Studies in Language and Literature; Language Acquisition; Individuals and Societies; Science; Mathematics; and the Arts. The programme has additional “core” components, including Theory of Knowledge, an extended essay, and Creativity, Action, Service. Through this Diploma Programme “core,” students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake service projects and extra-curricular activities.

The Educational Leadership Team at Convent & Stuart Hall views the addition of the IB Diploma Programme as a benefit to all students, from kindergarten to Grade 12.

“Knowing where students need to go as far as skills, content and outcomes is essential to curricular design,” says Rachel Simpson, Head of Convent High School. The outcome of preparing students to succeed in the IB program is inspiring a dynamic and rigorous scope and sequence for all curricular areas, including even the youngest learners.

This curricular work is already visible in first and second language acquisition, communications and mathematics, says Jaime Dominguez, Head of Stuart Hall for Boys. Elementary school leaders have created a “runway for success” using the high-level math objectives as a focal point, adds Angela Taylor, Head of Convent Elementary. “Convent’s accelerated math for high-achieving Middle Form students is an example of the IB’s influence pre-high school.”

For success in the IB program, excellent writing skills are critically important. Tony Farrell, Head of Stuart Hall High School, says he was inspired on a visit to Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami, an IB school. “The agency and engagement students displayed when discussing their extended essay topics and research was truly impressive.” Rachel adds that the extended essay will require strong research skills and will engage each student’s capacity to ask her or his own questions. “The transfer of skills across the curriculum is also essential,” she says, “especially communication skills in oral and written form.”

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives continued • The traditional Mass of the Holy Spirit and the Blessing of the School Year became a combined K-12 event at the Cathedral of St. Mary’s of the Assumption.

• A review is underway of school materials that articulate traditions, feast days and rituals, as communicated on the website and in handbooks for employees, Trustees and families.

• Various “Campus Ministry” roles were reorganized in 2015 to create two Spiritual L.I.F.E. Directors (Liturgical, Interiority, Faith, Engagement), one for K-8 and one for High School. The name change expresses more explicitly a holistic approach to ministry that includes Liturgy: Mass, chapels, prayer services; Interiority: a Sacred Heart value that recognizes the personal nature of spirituality; Faith: both organized and organic; and Engagement: an invitation to discern the participation to which we are each called as individuals in community.

• Realignment of the elementary schedules allows for a weekly chapel for boys and girls in Grades 5-8.

• Convent High School reimagined their Prize Day in the spring of 2015, relocating the ceremony to the Mary Mardel, RSCJ, Chapel and reinstating the tradition of awarding books as academic prizes. (See also “What is Prize Day?” on page 29.)

• The Board of the Parents Association participated in Project Cicero, which had its inaugural event in San Francisco in the spring. All-school support of this organization yielded 1,500 books for use in San Francisco public schools.

A Heritage to Preserve Sacred Heart education in the United States is nearly 200 years old, and has thrived in San Francisco for nearly 130 years. Some of the heritage of Convent & Stuart Hall lives in traditions, and some lives in artifacts and symbols. Here are a few still embraced by students, faculty and parents.

What is the significance of the Ribbon Heart?

The logo of the Society of the Sacred Heart since 1988 has been the “Ribbon Heart.”

The Society explains: “The heart represents our hearts, the Society of the Sacred Heart, and the Heart of Jesus. Its openness calls us to be as vulnerable, transparent, and welcoming … The heart surrounds the whole world to remind us of our internationality.” Many Sacred Heart schools in the U.S. have incorporated the Ribbon Heart into their logos as well.

What is the significance of the Laurel Wreath?

During Prize Day in Sacred Heart Schools around the world, students who have earned academic achievement are crowned with a laurel, a sign that gives glory to God. It is a symbol included on the class rings given to juniors in a ceremony at the end of the year.

What is Prize Day?

Prize Day is a tradition upheld in some fashion at nearly all Sacred Heart schools— a formal assembly to recognize academic achievement or character formation.

Historically, the actual prize given was a book. For many schools, eventually the prize became a certificate. In 2015 at Convent High School, the faculty reimagined their prize day: rather than giving one prize per section, faculty selected one student per grade to receive a prize in each discipline, e.g., the English Prize for the Freshman Class. And, inspired by the Great Texts initiative as well as the origin of the event, the prizes given this year were once again books. Additionally, the faculty worked together to identify “commended scholars” in each grade.

Why do many traditions include something pink?

Often when students celebrate a tradition, such as Mass of the Holy Spirit or a feast day, they are offered goûter, a small treat (cookies, macaroons). Often the treat is pink, which is a tribute to the painting of Mater done by a young postulant to the Society, Pauline Perdrau, in 1844. She later became an RSCJ, but as a young girl, she painted the portrait of Mater at the Sacred Heart school at the Trinità dei Monti, atop of the Spanish Steps in Rome. When she finished, Mother Superior Josephine de Coriolis thought the painting’s colors were too vivid, and covered the fresco with a protective cloth for it to dry. When the cloth was removed, the colors had softened and the Mater’s dress was pink. Today, a statue or painting of Mater Admirabilis is in every Sacred Heart school around the world, and pink is often used in tribute.

What is espacio?

Espacio is a moment of space, a moment of quiet reflection that is often observed in chapel, at the beginning of meetings, or in class when everyone needs to focus their energy. Espacio is something special to Convent & Stuart Hall, although many guests who experience it share the tradition with others.

Why do graduates receive a passport to the other Sacred Heart “houses”?

Students graduating from Convent & Stuart Hall are not only given membership to a local Alumni Association but to an active international association of Sacred Heart students from schools in 40 countries. The passports invite alumnae and alumni to seek out Sacred Heart connections wherever they travel.

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives continued • Dr. Lisa Miller, author of the 2015 book The Spiritual Child, joined parents and educators for two events in October. Dr. Miller’s work is grounded in cognitive research and explores the positive correlation between spirituality and healthy development in children and teens.

• The Busy Person’s Retreat, an on-campus daylong guided prayer retreat for the adults of the community, will return in 2015-16.

• The Mary Mardel, RSCJ Chapel Fund was established to support the physical integrity of this sacred space and support mission-inspired activities.

• The school actively works to preserve the historic elements of all of the buildings and collects and displays artifacts that are part of the school and the buildings’ stories. A recent gift includes artwork from Mary Emma Flood, daughter of James and Maud Flood, who grew up in the Flood Mansion, donated by Mary Emma’s son Ted Stebbins.

• Convent & Stuart Hall High School faculties visited the Religious of the Sacred Heart at the Oakwood community prior to the beginning of school in 2015.

The Spiritual Child Every child is born a spiritual child, Dr. Lisa Miller told a room of Convent & Stuart Hall parents and guests on October 15. This capacity can be strengthened, she added, with parents and schools playing a critical role. Convent & Stuart Hall is one of the first schools to invite Dr. Miller, the lead clinical psychologist from Columbia University’s Teachers College, to talk about her new book, The Spiritual Child.

In the book, Dr. Miller illustrates the scientific research on the mental and emotional benefits of exposing children to spirituality in its many forms. The evidence suggests adolescents with a personal spirituality are 40 percent less likely to use and abuse substances and 60 percent less likely to be depressed as teenagers. She adds those same adolescents have significantly more positive markers for thriving, including an increased sense of meaning and purpose, and high levels of academic success. “There is a very strong body of science that says a personal spiritual life is more protective against suffering in the second decade [of life] than anything,” she said.

Her book and presentation resonated with many educators and families in the Convent & Stuart Hall community, as she underscores the positive outcomes derived from the school’s commitment to educating the whole child—mind, body and spirit. In her day at Convent & Stuart Hall, she presented to parents, lead small groups of students in a series of activities, and presented to faculty and staff. A group of Convent & Stuart Hall faculty then traveled to New York in early November to be part of Dr. Miller’s conference for educators at Columbia University on maximizing the benefits of spirituality formation.

In November, the school received a gift of $2,750,000 from the estate of beloved school friend Elvera (Ellie) Fusco, who passed away in 2014 (pictured here in the Chapel in 2010). Ellie attended Lone Mountain College for Women, then a Sacred Heart university, and had been a longtime public school teacher; she served as the President of the Children of Mary, which meets in the Mary Mardel, RSCJ Chapel. Per her wishes, the gift will create an endowed fund for faculty salaries and benefits, as well as three awards given annually at the President’s New Year celebration for employees, named for Ellie and two of her siblings, Mildred (Millie) and Lorenzo (Larry).

Completed & Ongoing Initiatives • The Annual Fund goal of reaching $2 million by the end of the Strategic Plan was realized two years ahead of schedule in 2014-15 with community gifts totaling $2,075,126.

• A generous gift from the late Rosemary Cozzo supported two $2,500 Launch Grants for student entrepreneurship.

• The modular Wenger Practice rooms installed were funded, in part, by the Raise the Paddle at the 2015 Celebrate Spring Live Auction, which raised more than $150,000 for Beaux Arts initiatives.

• Seconds To Go, the school’s resale shop on Fillmore Street, celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2015. All proceeds from the store benefit Tuition Assistance, and many parents and students volunteer in the store throughout the year.

Student Ideas Grow with Launch Grants The 2014-2015 President’s Report announced the creation of two $2,500 launch grants, which would be awarded to students in recognition of a viable and impactful entrepreneurial prototype. The grants provide seed funding in support of these business ventures.

Longtime supporter of Convent & Stuart Hall, Rosemary Cozzo, read the story and called President Ann Marie Krejcarek, offering to fund the first round of launch grants.

Rosemary loved the idea of funding student-led start-up businesses as they develop their concepts and establish a plan to bring them to market. Sadly Rosemary passed away before she had the chance to see the success of this new program.

Forty-six student teams submitted applications for the Launch Grants. From there, 10 finalists pitched their ideas in a “Shark Tank”-style competition in May, before a panel of professionals who specialize in venture capital, intellectual property law and entrepreneurship. Impressed, the panel awarded grants to three groups: “A Better Pizza Box,” which can be stacked and folded for ease of transportation and disposal; “Donation Mall,” an app for consumers to search for a product from brands that give to charity; and “Community Zone,” an app for middle school and high school students to find community service opportunities and track their hours.

Initial applications were assessed in five categories: product description, relevance, business application and marketability, expressed level of commitment and an intellectual property test. Convent & Stuart Hall’s 2014 “Design Thinking and Then What” symposium launched the initiative and mentoring curricular programming followed to support student designs. Lead Librarian, Amanda Walker, formulated a process for students to research intellectual property and test the originality of their ideas.

• A cohesive and polished messaging platform for the admissions process was refined, as was the applicant experience on campus.

• All school divisions are at capacity for enrollment for 2015-16 and demand is high for kindergarten and Grade 9.

• New endowed funds include the Mary Mardel, RSCJ Chapel Fund to support the sacred Chapel space and related activities, an endowed gift from the Spaht Family to support writing at Convent Elementary and an additional pledge of support from Joe and Karen Niehaus to expand the Niehaus Family President’s Excellence Award.

• The Enrollment Management Office distributed and analyzed data from annual parent surveys as well as annual surveys from prospective families to inform enrollment practices and school program.

Spaht Family Endowed Fund Enhances Writing Program at Convent Elementary Convent Elementary parents Claire and Holden Spaht believe that when a child is able to access her voice and enjoy the creative process, she is poised for success. In considering a gift to the school, the Spahts hoped to bridge their family’s passion for writing with a contribution that would benefit a wide range of students in perpetuity.

The Spaht Family Writing Fund will support the writing program at Convent Elementary to create opportunities to allow for enhanced writing time for each Convent Elementary student as she works on creative and expository writing.

“Based on our own experiences, the importance of good written communication grows over time regardless of what academic or career pursuit one chooses,” Holden says. “We felt that among other factors, the proliferation of social media is changing the way kids communicate and exacerbating a neglect of writing skills. Hopefully our gift will play a small part in ensuring young students will continue to develop these important skills—and in a fun way.”

The gift will allow for initiatives such as weekly writing workshops, guest authors to work directly with students, and the creation of The Prix Barat, for the Convent Elementary student who submits the winning entry in an annual writing competition.

Thought Leaders Share Expertise With Other Educators Bonnie Fraenza, all school music faculty, traveled to Iceland to offer a presentation to K-12 teachers and college faculty about building a music program from the ground up.

Julia Arce, Convent High School English faculty, is a scholar at the Gilder Lehrman lecture program at Harvard University, and in summer 2015 served as a scholar Ambassador to the British Union at Oxford University.

Rachel Bundang, PhD, Theology & Philosophy K-12 Department Chair, developed a lecture on Women, Religion and Social Justice for the University of Notre Dame and also served as a summer scholar at the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Fred Jaravata, Educational Innovation Coordinator, introduced an internet audience of educators to the Unkefer Spark Studio in October as one of five presenters in a webinar. The Association of Technology Leaders in Independent School webinar asked schools who are pioneering makerspace design for K-12 students to present.

Belle Akers, Convent Grade 1 teacher, offered workshops on Science Across the Disciplines—how a solid primarylevel approach to scientific thinking helps students apply similar concepts to math and language arts—at the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools conference, as well as a workshop on Next Generation Science Standards. In October, Belle and associate teacher Kristin Runco presented on science notebooks at the California Science Teachers Association.

Krista Inchausti, Educational Innovation Coordinator and K-4 Computer Studies teacher, also presented at the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools conference: “Cozy and Modern: Creating a Space Where Girls Feel Safe to Fail.”

Letter from

the Board Chair Now in her fourth year as President, Dr. Ann Marie Krejcarek continues to lead Convent & Stuart Hall in all areas of academic preeminence. Highlights of that progress appear throughout this report. Leveraging the school’s sound financial footing, she has brought forward world-class academic programming, such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and activated curriculum with educators compelled by the Sacred Heart mission, and, importantly, competitive salary and benefit packages.

As a lower form, middle form and high school parent, I have seen firsthand some of the original initiatives that Ann Marie and her team have brought online, which cross and connect the school divisions: the Great Texts Canon, the design thinking and innovation launch grants, the annual President’s Costa Rica trip, the flexible new spaces, which expand how students learn and collaborate.

The Board of Trustees is grateful for her relationships with parents and friends, which have resulted in significant investments in our programming— endowed funds that create possibilities for today and support the school in perpetuity.

I am joined on the Board and its committees by parents, grandparents, alumni, Religious and other friends who all work in service of the school, and I thank them sincerely for their time, talent and treasure. In my final year as Chair, I must also thank the leadership that preceded me and their work to create a board whose composition, professionalism and dedication will serve the school and our community well through the next strategic plan and beyond. In the preceding pages, you will see the skills and experience that the 23 members of the Board bring to Convent & Stuart Hall; what you won’t see in their bios is their love for the school and their deep respect for their roles as trustees of the mission, history and tradition of Schools of the Sacred Heart San Francisco.
