Message from the Director

Dear Convent & Stuart Hall Community, Once again, I am pleased to present you with a copy of the Bulletin, a collection of features and articles that tell the stories of Schools of the Sacred Heart San Francisco. I know that what you see and read will generate smiles and nods of approval from you, as you recognize names and faces or relive moments from your past as a student, parent, staff member or friend. The themes of care and personal growth are familiar ones for all of us. The stamp of a Sacred Heart education rings true throughout this edition.

The timing of the arrival of our publication is an appropriate one, since we are on the eve of another school year. With the advent of this new year comes a theme that will serve as our focus for the next twelve months, Gratitude. On behalf of the entire school community, I can speak to our grateful spirit—for our students and families, for our employees, for so many of you who take time to remind us of the pride you hold for this school. In so many ways we are blessed with opportunities to provide our current students with the very best of facilities, teachers and staff and rich educational opportunities. The Goals & Criteria never go out of date, and we are grateful for the foundation they provide us as we engage in our mission.

Josephinum Academy Invited to Join Network In April, the number of Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the United States grew by one as Josephinum Academy in Chicago was promoted to full membership. The nation’s Network now includes 22 schools.

The Josephinum community, located in the Wicker Park neighborhood in inner-city Chicago, has spent the past three years incorporating the five Goals & Criteria that Network schools share, in preparation of a meeting with the Sacred Heart Committee on Goals.

According to “the Jo” (as it is called), the values of Sacred Heart education have found a home in the hearts of their students. When asked what Sacred Heart education means to her, senior Corina Perez answered with a word, “Everything,” then explained, “It has meant my life, my friends, my teachers, my values, who I am as woman and who I am called to be.”

Josephinum has a special relationship to the Society of Sacred Heart. As administrators from the Jo explain, their school was established in 1890 by the Sisters of Christian Charity (SCC), whose founder Pauline von Mallinckrodt had opened a school for blind children in Germany in the 1840s. Pauline met Madeleine Sophie in France in 1846 and had hoped the RSCJ could serve as administrators for the school, but the German government wouldn’t allow it. What Pauline learned from Madeline Sophie helped her in her journey to form the SCC, and establish schools worldwide.

Fast forward 100 years to the Jo, which needed an SCC religious to run the school in 1990.

Without one, two RSCJs stepped up: Bonnie Kearney, RSCJ, was hired as principal and Pam Hickey, RSCJ, was hired as a teacher. Two more RSCJ principals succeeded Sr. Kearney and helped the school become as associate member of the Network: Donna Collins, RSCJ, and Martha Roughan, RSCJ. Dozens of Rising Freshmen from Convent & Stuart Hall Take Advantage of Sacred Heart Early Admissions Program The incoming freshmen classes at Convent & Stuart Hall High Schools will each include 14 eighth graders from Convent Elementary School and Stuart Hall for Boys this fall, as part of the Sacred Heart Early Admissions Program instituted this year. Among those eighth graders, two have also been honored as Sacred Heart Scholars.

The new program allows our interested eighth graders to apply to our high schools in an accelerated manner. In prior years, the schools had a re-enrollment program, but the plan was discontinued in 2009 so administrators and admissions staff could revisit it.

Under the new program, students and their parents

submit an application, providing necessary academic data and references, and then meet with high school personnel for an interview. Students who were selected and have chosen to attend the high schools benefit from an early decision and a scholarship.

Those selected were also able to apply for the distinction of Sacred Heart Scholar and receive an additional scholarship. This year’s scholars are: Frances Eklund and Stephen Everest. These students have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and faithful observance of the Goals & Criteria of Sacred Heart education.

Students Raise Money for Sacred Heart School in Uganda When Convent third grade teacher Caroline Zoba set off for Uganda in June to spend the summer at the Sacred Heart School there, she was able to meet faceto-face some of the students who will benefit from our community’s kindness. Through fundraisers on the San Francisco campuses this school year, our students raised enough money to support several girls for one school year in Uganda.

Between the two big events held this year—a Play Date in December and the annual Pinewood Derby in March—more than $10,600 was raised to benefit the sister school in East Africa. When you add in sales from the maroon capes for the

lower form girls ($1,149), the Stuart Hall for Boys belt sale ($809) and impromptu lemonade stands, our school’s contribution to the Uganda school was over $12,500.

Among other things, she helped organize the books in the library; one afternoon, she helped the students discover a game that had been donated but had never played because they didn’t know the rules. You Did It! Annual Fund Donors Provide More Than $1.3 Million

Lily Kaplan and the UN Foundation’s Girl Up Campaign Convent High School junior Lily Kaplan found herself on stage in April with MTV correspondent SuChin Pak and Facebook marketing director Randi Zuckerberg as part of the Global Philanthropy Forum’s panel discussion about the power teenagers have to change the world.

Lily has spent the past year working with the UN Foundation’s Girl Up campaign as one of 17 Teen Advisors. Girl Up gives American girls the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for important UN Foundation programs aimed at improving the living conditions and education for girls in developing countries.

Lily says she became involved with Girl Up last fall when she applied through a Facebook advertisement, but two service trips she took last summer ignited her passion to help other girls: one to Costa Rica to help run a weeklong summer camp for 20 underprivileged children, and one to work as a junior counselor in training at a summer camp in Hillsborough, CA. She has also been involved with service initiatives at Convent High

School, including the Race for the Cure and Walk for Uganda, and has served as the co-president of the Girl Up Club at the school. Lily says getting teenagers more involved in serious issues, such as child marriage in Ethiopia, requires a two-prong approach. “To get teens inspired about change, we have to first educate about the facts, and then enable them to help through fun and innovative fundraisers and benefits,” she says.

The panel was moderated by Tamsin Smith, who previously served as the President of (RED)—an initiative that partners with companies like Gap and Apple to sell specially branded merchandise to raise money for African AIDS programs. In a Huffington Post article about the forum, Tamsin described Lily and the other panelists as “youth action pioneers,” adding: “Their collective efforts not only mobilize impact, they amplify and publicize possibilities, drawing ever more teens into a more conscious and confident approach to the future.”

She calls this generation’s movers and doers, like the Girl Up advisors, “philanthro-teens.”

From the classrooms to the soccer field, the libraries to the labs, Annual Fund gifts impacted all aspects of student life during the school year. You understood this and stepped forward to donate. Both Stuart Hall second grade and seventh grade families rallied to achieve 100 percent participation.

Alumnae and alumni from across the United States also gave the students their support: Maureen McGuire Myers ’58’54 in Lexington, MA, David Thacher SHB’70 in Redmond, WA, Bryan Lee ’05’01 in Los Angeles, Caroline Corbitt ’05 and Gregory Kocher SHB’05 in the Bay Area, plus many more.

Equally important, parents of alumni continued their long-standing support to ensure that current students receive an outstanding education—parents like Mr. and Mrs. John G. Lillianthal and to Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Merlone. The goal could not have been reached without the support of these community members and others like them. Congratulations, parents, alumni, grandparents and alumni parents, faculty and staff and friends.

Teachers Graduate from Elite Green Institute Three Convent & Stuart Hall elementary science teachers graduated from a California Academy of Science program in May designed to make them among the leading science and sustainability educators in the state.

During a ceremony on the Broadway campus, Kelly Rojas and Raina Cohen from Convent Elementary and Lauren Richardson from Stuart Hall for Boys completed the two-year program the Teacher Institute on Science and Sustainability, which combined handson summer workshops with yearlong mentoring in the classroom.

The program was designed to give elementary teachers the confidence and resources they need to develop dynamic science curriculum, says the Institute’s Grahme Smith. Many teachers in the program have multi-subject credentials, but not necessarily in-depth training on how to creatively present “green” topics.

“We help them to use sustainability as a lens for science issues they discuss in class,” he says.

Community Mobilizes for Japan Relief Efforts Students, parents and faculty from all four schools participated in an effort to raise money for the relief effort in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami there on March 11. From a two-day bake sale on both campuses, the school raised over $1,700, and the Stuart Hall High School junior class raised another $150 by organizing a dodge ball tournament. Funds raised were donated to Catholic Charities and the Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California.

Stuart Hall Senior Wins Archdiocesan Essay Contest Emmanuel Te (gr. 12) took first place in the San Francisco Archdiocesan Respect Life Essay Contest for San Francisco County. He received a $150 savings bond at St. Mary’s Cathedral during a presentation on May 8. Ryan Fisher (gr. 12) received honorable mention.

Employees Celebrate Service Milestones During an inservice assembly on May 6, we recognized employees celebrating an anniversary with the school. The Parents Association then showed gratitude for the hard work of all employees by serving a fiesta lunch.

iRun Miller’s Mile The 41st running of Miller’s Mile on April 30 brought hundreds of kids, parents and dogs to Crissy Field for the annual foot race. The event was chaired again by the dynamic duo of parents Beth Silvestri and Susan Butler, who have been involved with the race’s organization since 2006. They first became involved when they ran in the race with their children—Susan’s son Conor (gr. 8) and Beth’s daughters Diana (gr. 8) and Catherine (gr. 5).

As in year’s past, a t-shirt contest leading up to race day allowed Convent & Stuart Hall’s student artists the opportunity to create the theme. This year’s winning design came from Leet Miller (gr. 4) (see the shirt in action at left).

Eco-Council Testing Green Products in Classrooms, Offices We now live in a world where your favorite pair of worn-out Levi’s could soon enjoy a second life as a pencil or a ruler in a Convent & Stuart Hall classroom.

Inspired by a marketplace teeming with products made from post-consumer recycled materials, our community’s Eco-Council is working with the school’s Purchasing Department to explore greener options for the supplies we use the most in our classrooms and offices.

The Eco-Council’s Arnaz Raj (Stuart Hall for Boys science teacher) and central supplies’ Penny Green have been working together to identify which of our frequently ordered items have suitable alternatives that are both eco-conscious and cost effective. They have ordered products in a number of categories to be

tested in classrooms and offices, and have begun to collect feedback from testers. Some items include: Compostable Crayons made from soy, meaning they are non-petroleum based and completely biodegradable.

Biodegradable Permanent Markers, featuring non-toxic super-permanent ink and components that should biodegrade in as few as 500 days.

Recycled colored pencils, the barrels of which are made from recycled newspapers.

Refillable white board markers and rechargeable batteries.

Rulers made from old blue jeans.

The testers are also trying out various versions of staples, post-it notes, paper clips and scissors made from recycled content to see which hold up the best in repeated use.

Both campuses at Convent & Stuart Hall have already switched all paper products to comparable items made from post-consumer recycled materials, including printer paper; paper towels, toilet paper and toilet

Earth Week Inspires Second Graders

During Earth Week, which had a theme of Talking Trash, second graders at Convent Elementary School found themselves in a real dilemma when it came to ordering hot lunch; they realized that their favorite chocolate chip cookies come in plastic wrap. As associate teacher Holly Posner took orders for lunch, one by one the students decided to forego dessert so they wouldn’t be responsible for throwing away plastic.

Holly relayed the story to Chef Ian in the Broadway cafeteria, who has been investigating green alternatives for the kitchen. Thanks to Chef Ian, the following week, the cookies came in compostable paper wraps, to the delight of the entire class.

Convent Elementary Singers Selected for Elite National Choir Groups Fourteen Convent Elementary School students were invited to the national conference for Organization of American Kodály Educators in Minneapolis in mid-March.

The girls auditioned and were selected to perform with elite national choir groups, including the Children’s Chorus (gr. 5) and the Youth Chorus (gr. 6-8). The singers are: fifth graders Maddy Bjorklund, Nicole De Petris, Alena McGrew, Francesca Petruzzelli, Alexandra von Zedlitz and Alayna Wong; sixth graders Georgina Behnam, Charlotte Cobb, Dyllen Ford, Mackenzie Maly and Jill Reilly; seventh grader Serafina Cinti; and eighth graders Caroline Lo and Emilie Morse. Music teachers Gemma Arguelles and Jeanette Tietze are active members in OAKE, which promotes the method of making music based on Hungarian Master Zoltan Kodály.

Convent High School’s Varsity Basketball Team Has Record Season On the road to the Northern California Division V Playoffs, the Convent Cubs varsity basketball team was crowned Bay Counties LeagueWest Champions and advanced to the semi-final stage of the North Coast Section playoffs.

The only other Cubs teams to advance that far include the 2004 team and the 2003 team, which won the school’s first state championship.

This year’s varsity Cubs were undefeated in league play for the second consecutive year. They outplayed cross-town rival University High School (54 to 46) to take the league title, earning a No. 3 seed on the North Coast Section playoff bracket.

The team then solidly defeated the California School of the Deaf (60 to 34) in the first round of NCS playoffs, and dominated St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma (62-43) on February 26 before losing to Rincon Valley Christian (53 to 47) in the section semi-finals on March 2. By advancing to the semis, the Cubs earned an automatic berth to the division playoffs, where they had hoped to make a run at the state title again.

Their amazing season ended with the loss to Brookside Christian on March 8.

Stuart Hall Wins First League Title in Baseball Stuart Hall High School’s baseball team won its first Bay Counties League West championship title on May 21, beating Marin Academy 2 to 1.

Stuart Hall finished the regular season with a 9-1 league record (16-5 overall) and with accolades all around; sophomore pitcher Ben Carrasco, who was named SanFranPreps’ Player of the Week in April for throwing a no-hitter against Urban, was also named League MVP, while a total of eight Stuart Hall players earned BCL West All-League team honors.

The Knights advanced to the league tournament as the No. 1 seed, and beat University High School, 5 to 3, in the BCL semi-finals game on May 19.

In the finals a few days later, they took on Marin Academy, which had given Stuart Hall its only league loss this year on May 12.

By beating Marin Academy in the championship, Stuart Hall received an automatic bid to the division tournament, but that is where there season ended on May 28.

Stuart Hall for Boys Lacrosse Makes NCJLA Playoffs The seventh and eighth graders of the U15A lacrosse team from Stuart Hall for Boys advanced to the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA) playoffs in May. NCJLA is the largest youth lacrosse league in the United States.

The Lions finished the regular season as champions in the U15A southern regional division, with a ranking of No. 7 among all Northern California teams. Only the top eight teams advanced to the next round.

The Lions’ season ended on May 14 with a loss in the quarter-finals to Central Marin Lacrosse Club. cougars basketball

All CYO Ball Clubs Brought Home Trophies for Their Division The Catholic Youth Charities basketball season ended in May with a lot of hardware coming back to Convent Elementary School.

Each Cougars team advanced to the championship game of their respective division. The Grade 6 squad, the Grade 7 Red squad and the Grade 7 Silver squad all won their championships. The Grade 5 team brought home the second place trophy after falling short to the No. 1 seeded team.

Two Men’s Tennis Players Earn Playoff Berths Junior Nicolas Alvarez and senior Robert Sheets both qualified for the North Coast Section Tennis Individual Championships. Robert ends his career at The Hall as the No. 4 player in the North Coast Section. Cubs and Knights Storm the Competition in the Postseason Convent & Stuart Hall tracksters advanced 10 athletes to the North Coast Section Class A Championship on May 21. Some of the records include: * The Knights’ 4x100m squad finished in second place, setting a school record and qualifying to run in the NCS Meet of Champions. * Sophomore Sterling Kirk set the second school record of the day in the 400m, placing fourth overall. * Senior Kofi Vordzorgbe sprinted to a personal best in the 100m, setting the second-fastest time in team history. * The Knights’ 4x400m team set its third consecutive school record and placed third.

The Convent & Stuart Hall co-ed fencing team enjoyed great success this year, placing second in the San Francisco Section of the CIF and sending three fencers to the state championships.

At the All-City meet, sophomore Eliza Klyce won the city championship for the girls and sophomore Joseph Lam finished in second place in the City for the boys. Out of the 33 boys and 26 girls competing for top honors, junior Andrew Fejt placed 11th overall, sophomore Colin Shepard finished 16th and junior Izzy Pinard finished 18th. With those finishes, Eliza, Joseph and Andrew all qualified for the AllState meet, where Eliza went on to place second in the state.

Izzy also competed this spring in the NorCal Division II and Division III Summer National Fencing Qualifier for the women’s saber tournaments, winning a silver medal and a gold medal respectively. In doing so, she qualified to compete in the 2011 USA Summer National Fencing Championships and North American Cup Tournaments in Reno in July.

Convent Junior Rows in National Championship Convent High School junior Katie Ghotbi competed with her club rowing team in their National Championships in Oak Ridge, TN, in June. Her Pacific Rowing Club Women’s Lightweight four-person team raced well all weekend, advancing to the finals and placing fifth.

Convent Student Earns Bronze Medal in National Championship Sierra Wolfrom, an eighth grader at Convent Elementary School, won a bronze medal with her club cheer squad, Rebels Elite, at the National Cheer Competition in Long Beach, CA, this spring. Redmond Lyons Ends His Record–Making Career on High Note Senior Redmond Lyons finished his stellar high school golf career with a bid to play in the North Coast Section Tournament of Champions in May, where he finished 13th out of 143 golfers—the best finish for any Stuart Hall golfer in the school’s history, according to coach Mike Armstrong.

Redmond qualified for the tournament by tying for third place in the NCS Division II Championships.

His performance was impressive not only because he was the top Bay Area Conference finisher in the tournament but because the golfer he tied—Carlos Briones from Hayward—is one of the top golfers in Northern California, Mike says.

Earlier in the spring, Redmond also won the Bay Links Challenge against competitors from the Bay Area Conference and enjoyed a runner-up finish in the Bay Counties LeagueWest Championship. At the end of the year awards dinner, Redmond was named team MVP for the fourth straight year. Redmond was as also named to the BCL-West All League team for the fourth consecutive year.

& Governance

As an independent, non-profit organization, Convent & Stuart Hall is governed by a Board of Trustees, which serves as the guardian of the school’s mission.

In 1887, the Religious of

the Sacred Heart opened their first school west of the Rockies on Bush Street in San Francisco. They enrolled 30 girls. Within two years, student population had doubled. Over the next half-century, growth of the school matched that of the city, and the RSCJs guided Schools of the Sacred Heart through many challenges including major earthquakes, severe economic challenges and world wars.

As a monastic order, the Society of the Sacred Heart managed all aspects of school governance themselves until the late 1960s. During Vatican II— the Catholic Church’s ecumenical council to address the future (1962-65)—Council Fathers mandated the church begin “opening the doors,” which meant previously cloistered orders were instructed to live and operate more modernly. It was a drastic change in many ways, but the sisters understood that with change comes growth.

Mary “Be” Mardel, RSCJ, served as Mother Superior from 1966 to 1970, and is one of the RSCJs in San Francisco who realized that by embracing new methodologies and adapting to the rapidly changing world, the school would continue to thrive. Because the availability of RSCJ faculty began to diminish by 1967 (meaning more lay teachers needed to be hired) and because secular enrollment increased (meaning competition with other private schools intensified) Sr. Mardel sought the guidance of a lay organizational consultant.

Under that guidance, the first “Advisory Board” met in June 1968, a combination of religious and lay people.

It was at this time that the non-academic offices that support the schools (Admissions, Business and Development) were formed. By 1978, a formal Board of Trustees was established to oversee school policy and

governance, with a layperson as Board Chair.

Recognizing that the role of the board in an independent school is to uphold the school’s mission, the new board created bylaws specifying trustee duties, responsibilities, and authorities designed to ensure that the mission is implemented school-wide. Committees, both standing and ad hoc, were established to oversee policy and planning issues.

As with any organizational charter, the bylaws have been amended over the years to address new or emerging concerns but the basic structure of the board remains unchanged. Each trustee initially serves a threeyear term and may be elected for an additional three years. In special circumstances, a trustee may serve longer than six years.

For the 2011-2012 academic year, 24 people will serve as trustees. The current standing board committees are: Advancement– primary duties include assisting the Advancement Office and Parents Association with fundraising activities; reviewing and assessing fundraising activities; stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation of all constituent groups; maintaining strong relationships with alumni; and such other duties as are determined by board resolution from time to time.

Campaign is a sub-committee of Advancement that focuses on determining the structure for and completing the fundraising for a capital and endowment campaign to further the goals of the Strategic Plan.

Audit– primary duties include recommending to the board the hiring of an independent accounting firm, conferring with the auditor concerning the financial affairs of the schools, reviewing and making decisions on acceptance of the audit, reviewing compliance of the schools with audit recommendations, approving nonaudit services by independent CPAs for conformance to standards, and such other duties as are determined by board resolution from time to time.

Business & Finance– primary duties include financial stewardship of the schools, recommending annual budgets to the board, management of buildings and grounds, managing the schools’ investment and endowment, and such other duties as are determined by

board resolution from time to time.

Investments is a sub-committee of Business & Finance primarily responsible for managing the schools’ investment portfolio and retirement plan.

Building & Grounds is a subcommittee of Business & Finance responsible for the long-term stewardship and use of our buildings and grounds.

Committee on Trustees– profiles the board based upon the needs of the Strategic Plan and cultivates and recruits suitable candidates for committee and board membership; responsible for providing a list of candidates for election or re-election to the board, and to committees of the board, as well as nominations for the officers of the board and the election process for the chair of the board. It is responsible for trustees’ orientation, education, and trustee annual self-assessment survey and board governance and such other duties as determined by board resolution from time to time.

Director’s Evaluation and Compensation– primary duty includes discharging the board’s responsibilities relating to the total compensation of the schools’ Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Schools, in support of the business objectives and mission of the schools, competitive practice and all applicable rules and regulations.

The Director’s Compensation and Evaluation Committee will conduct the annual evaluation of the Director of Schools and make any needed recommendations to the board. The Director’s Compensation and Evaluation Committee shall have such other duties as determined by board resolution from time to time.

Executive– chaired by the Chair of the Board, who is also the VicePresident of the Corporation, its membership consists of the Chair of the Board; the Director of Schools, who is also the President of the Corporation; the Vice Chair(s) of the board; and such other members as the board may appoint from time to time. The Executive Committee, unless limited by a resolution of the board, shall exercise the authority of the board between meetings. The executive committee shall have such other duties as are

determined by board resolution from time to time.

The current ad hoc committees are: Marketing and Enrollment– formed beginning July 1, 2011, to support the marketing and admission efforts of the school to achieve a sustainable level of enrollment while fulfilling the mission; focuses on best practices to market the schools, analyzes current applicable trends, and works with admissions to sustain or increase enrollment and strengthen the application process.

Strategic Planning – sets long-term goals for the schools based on current strengths and challenges and predicted future development. The board began work on a new five-year strategic plan last January. The Strategic Planning Committee is currently soliciting feedback from all constituencies including students, current and past parents, faculty, staff, alumni, major donors and current and past trustees.

After identifying key topics and priorities from the community, the committee will work with the board to finalize the new strategic plan by early 2012.

The members of our board are all volunteers. Most are working professionals and have considerable experience serving on community boards. Their duties frequently require long hours and patient collaboration.

They dedicate significant personal time to the hard work and occasional challenges involved in guiding this large and complex institution.

Keeping their focus on the future of the schools as they carefully consider policy implementation and fiscal planning, trustees are crucial to sustaining the integrity of the mission. They are the stewards of what was begun by the Society of the Sacred Heart and they take their responsibility seriously. The trustees incorporate Formation to Mission into their orientation and retreats and, at least once during their term, attend a Network of Sacred Heart Schools conference to enhance their knowledge of the traditions and history. At least three RSCJs are always on the board.

The dedication of past and current trustees to the all of our students and families reflects their profound belief in the mission of Sacred Heart education.

The 19th annual Celebrate Spring weekend in April–the largest fundraiser for Convent & Stuart Hall’s Parents Association–raised more than $430,000 for financial aid. The team of volunteers that planned the lively weekend of activities in this year’s theme, Dream, Grow, Bloom, was led by four event chairs Jewel Casinelli (Elio, gr. 9), Kathryn Kelson (Sara, gr.10), Erika Mooney (Daisy, kindergarten), Kristine von Zedlitz (Katherine, kindergarten; Alexandra, gr. 5; George, gr.2).

During events on April 8-9, parents and alumni showed support for the schools by attending the Garden Luncheon and shopping at the Boutique, bringing their kids to the free Family Festival, and dancing the night away at the Evening Gala. Dozens of families also won trips, celebrity dining experiences and other items during the live auction at the Gala, and during the online auction in the week leading up to the event. For the second year in a row, families also purchased “Count Me In” items such as tickets to the Texas Hold ‘Em tournament and a Blue Angels BBQ at the Flood Mansion.

Damn Yankees With a roar from the crowd, the musical comedy Damn Yankees opened on Broadway in May as middle form students brought to life the George Abbott and Douglass Wallop book about love, devotion and baseball. In the story, a diehard Washington Senators baseball fan is willing to sell his soul to the devil to see his team beat the Bronx Bombers from New York.

This March the Syufy Theatre transformed into the Kit Kat Club as our high school actors, singers and dancers performed Cabaret, under the direction of Pamela Rickard and theater manager Chris Miller. The Broadway musical (and later movie) tells the story of a club entertainer in Weimar Republic-era Berlin who romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them.

Stuart Hall for Boys

STANLEY This paper citizen of the world helped Stuart Hall third graders learn about immigration and the global network of Sacred Heart schools. { by stefani blair } With a thump in the night, a gigantic bulletin board fell on Stanley Lambchop as he slept, making him flat enough to slide into an envelope and travel the world— one postage stamp at a time. Flat Stanley has captured the imaginations of students of all ages since the first book chronicling his adventures was published in 1964.

In many classrooms across the world, Flat Stanley has become an agent for teaching about geography, immigration and culture. This year’s third graders at Stuart Hall for Boys were first introduced to Flat Stanley in one of his books, and soon after, put him to work as their ambassador.

Third grade teacher Amy Torrano says students had three main projects associated with Flat Stanley in their unit on immigration, where they learned about the people who move to the United States and the places from which they are coming.

First, the students sent Flat Stanley cut outs to their own family members across the United States, and received letters and photos from places like Scottsdale, AZ; Sun Valley, ID; Orlando, FL; Chicago and more. Students began to cover an entire wall with the information they received and added push-pins into a large map.

Next, they created cut outs of Flat Stanley and sent him to Sacred Heart schools in the worldwide network. They began to receive packages from schools in the United States, including correspondence with their pen pals from Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Jersey.

Then packages started arriving from every corner of the globe—from Sacred Heart students in Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain, Australia, England and Colombia.

With each addition to the wall and map, the students became more excited, but they also became more aware of the world around them.

And because their unit was on immigration, and not just geography, the unit called for a third project. The boys formed small teams and created Flat Stanley counterparts from many different countries, and made up stories about how they traveled to the United States, what their home countries were like and what they liked best about America. In Will Jaggers’ art class, they created art for their characters, and in the Unkefer computer lab, they created short movies about the journeys.

Flat Shota from Japan likes San Francisco because there is plenty of fish and seafood to eat here, just like in his homeland.

Flat Daniel from England pointed out that while Big Ben in London is a clock tower that is 40 years older than the one in San Francisco’s Ferry Building, the latter is the largest wind-up mechanical clock in the world.

Flat Jesus from Mexico likes to play soccer, and sailed to San Francisco from Mazatlan in a boat with his brother and pet Chihuahua named Nacho.

Flat Quan from Vietnam traveled in a boat for seven days with his dog to get here, and liked seeing the Golden Gate bridge, though he added that Vietnam’s newest suspension bridge—Thuan Phuoc—is about 2,000 feet longer than our international orange icon.

Flat Tom from France was eager to try San Francisco’s famous sour dough bread so he could compare it to his country’s all-too-famous baguettes and baked goods.

Flat Ivan from Russia traveled here from Moscow, where he found a lot of people of Russian descent living in San Francisco.

Flat Luca from Italy traveled to the United States with his sister and four brothers; he said his country could fit inside the state of California, which is about 47,000 square miles larger.

Stuart Hall third graders next year will embark on this journey too, Amy says, so watch your mailboxes. You never know who may show up.

About Stanley

Flat Stanley was created in 1964 by author Jeff Brown and illustrator Tomi Ungerer. In 1995, third grade teacher Dale Hubert in Ontario, Canada, created the Flat Stanley Project to facilitate a letter-writing campaign for his students. With a network of Sacred Heart schools at our disposal, our students correspond with their counterparts all over the world at many grade levels, but it’s nice to have Flat Stanley jumpstart the conversation.

Seventh graders learn the science behind DNA fingerprints. { by stefani blair }

W

hile Convent High School students took final exams the week before Memorial Day, Science Department Chair Ray Cinti opened his biology lab to the seventh grade girls in Elena Neufeld’s class. He led the elementary girls in two class periods on Agarose Gel Electrophoresis -- experimenting with DNA that has been fragmented by restriction enzymes.

The girls were given a fictitious criminal case to unravel based on the DNA evidence provided. To figure out the whodunit, they had to use the same process real life investigators would use to match DNA.

Ray explains the process: “They separated the DNA in an agarose gel that was placed in an electrical field (electrophoresis). The DNA fragments traveled through the agarose pores, with smaller fragments snaking their way through the gel faster than the larger fragments.

After electrophoresis, the students analyzed the DNA. The students learned that every person has a unique fragment pattern. The pattern of these fragments is called a DNA fingerprint. Often individual genetic traits such as genetic diseases and the predisposition for certain diseases are determined by the mobility of specific DNA fragments that are identified to be associated with a particular trait.”

With K-12 students in the same school community, our elementary girls have unique opportunities other schools can’t offer, says Anne Wachter, RSCJ, Head of Convent Elementary School.

In Their Own Words The graduating eighth graders and seniors aren’t the only students who have much to look forward to in the coming year.

As school breaks for the summer, we take time to honor the accomplishments of the eighth graders celebrating their commencement and the graduating seniors on their way to college. But students in every grade are also reflecting on the previous year, grateful for the experiences they have had and eager to take the next steps in their education.

There are curriculum challenges that lay ahead for them, like learning quadratic equations or being introduced to Latin. There are always capstone projects students learn to associate with certain grade levels, like the Tolerance Unit for eighth graders at Stuart Hall for Boys or the Sophomore Symposium research project at Convent High School.

There are horizons to explore, whether they be on a pumpkin patch field trip or at a service site with other volunteers.

And there are social milestones that keep the students excited—like the first time they get a locker for their books and are trusted to change classes for different subjects. We entrust “duties” at certain grade levels, like student government, maintaining the gardens or serving as morning escorts. The older our students get, the more privileges they may enjoy as well, like the ability to leave campus for a Tully’s coffee break or to order egg rolls from the neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

So until there are college acceptances to explore and diplomas to admire, and before there are monumental transitions to face, these are some of the small but important moments that have our students excited, animated, grateful (and maybe a little) anxious as they return to campus in the fall.

First grade is when students start keeping journals to observe and reflect.

Second grade at Convent Elementary is when students complete the Influential Women research projects.

Third graders start taking a new language, choosing between Spanish and French.

Convent Sophomores Lead Research Symposium The hallmark academic research project gives students a unique opportunity to explore a subject from several angles.

Standing before a projection screen displaying her PowerPoint presentation on footbinding in China, sophomore Sophia Sanchez eloquently explained how such a seemingly painful custom became widespread in that country for centuries. Sophie’s pictures and diagrams showed how the medical procedure breaks the foot (or prevents it from growing normally) to give a perfect lotus shape, and how the coveted tiny feet became a symbol of wealth and status. She navigated her audience in the Adam Room through the religious and ethical impacts the custom had on generations of women.

A rite of passage for second-year Convent students is the Sophomore Symposium, where each young woman presents an academic research project to faculty, students

and families. Through the projects, students spend months learning how to conduct interdisciplinary research, and then work to publish their findings in a written research paper and a multimedia presentation.

Faculty Mike Stafford, Christy Cinti, Kate McMichael and Cynthia Valente help students select topics they can explore through the lens of history, theology and science— and help them transform their findings into creative PowerPoints.

Stop for a second and listen to the sound your building makes. What do you hear? What elements in your building’s architecture might alter that sound?

Students at Stuart Hall High School enjoyed a unit this semester that explored sound as art. The Art+Physics project began in late January at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as we met sound installation artist Bill Fontana, exploring his work “Sonic Shadows” at the museum. What a treat to meet an internationally renowned sound artist and hear the context for his work, which is designed to capture the resonance of structural elements like the fifth-floor pedestrian truss bridge and boiler room pipes as they transform into musical instruments.

Thanks to Stuart Hall parent Jill Sterrett (mother of Grey Beaudin, gr. 12) our students were able to not only meet the artist but to enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of the making of this innovative piece. Our goal was to develop an understanding of the science behind the art.

After the artist offered an introduction to the students, our adventure began. We toured his onsite sound studio in the boiler room of the museum.

The sound sensors placed within the museum act as receivers for generated sound. Arup, an acoustic consulting firm with a lab here in the city, assisted Bill in creating “Sonic Shadows,” which was commissioned by SFMOMA for its 75th anniversary.

Technicians from Arup were onsite with us to explain how the piece was designed.

In groups of five, students toured the boiler room where the artist has created a computer sound studio. Fontana placed sensors within the museum to capture both ambient and created sounds. Students mindful of tight spaces, wearing closed-toe shoes and hard hats, traveled the restricted areas of the museum with awe and wonder. Learning came alive in our active discovery. Small groups also filtered through the closed galleries, viewed the Diaz mural made of mica paint and interacted with “Sonic Shadows” on the fifth floor bridge. We finished in the galleries with the Diaz mica mural addressing color and light.

We then walked a few blocks down the street to the Arup SoundLab. There, students learned from master sound specialists about how sound is altered due to the shape of the space where it is heard. We experienced this first hand in the demo lab.

Students then completed their exploration at the Stuart Hall art studio as technology teachers Rachel Kirkbride and Lori Saltveit and I helped them create digital art works that use sound, light and color.

Our Community

A Bitter Cup of Tea Convent & Stuart Hall students and faculty react to recent challenges to Greg Mortenson’s credibility, following a year when many of our conversations have been inspired by his book. { by matt chan’11 & jack pardini’11 } “It’s a beautiful story, and it’s a lie.” In a nonchalant but disquieting manner, renowned mountaineer and author Jon Krakauer cast a disheartening pall upon philanthropist and fellow climber Greg Mortenson and his organization, the Central Asian Institute (CAI). Krakauer’s unsettling words came with a series of allegations in a CBS 60 Minutes investigation that aired April 17, which questioned the credibility of Mortenson’s experiences and his work to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan, all of which was detailed in his bestseller Three Cups of Tea. For the Convent & Stuart Hall High School community, the claims made in the 60 Minutes report hit close to home, as the memoir was a part of the 2010 summer reading list and became a central theme for various co-ed events this year, from the Four School Mass to the High School Poetry Festival. As more details unfold in light of the controversy, students from both Broadway and Octavia have voiced their thoughts on the matter, both questioning and defending the emphasis of Mortenson’s message and its value in relation to our discussions.

The Allegations Mortenson has denied the challenges to his work, but they remain fresh in the eyes of critics. One of the most central anecdotes of Mortenson’s story is about his relationship with the villagers of Korphe, located in northeastern Pakistan. As Mortenson tells it, they showed him care and compassion when they found him in 1993, lost and near death during a failed attempt to summit K2, the world’s second highest mountain, and during that visit, he promised to return to Korphe and build a school for their children. According to the CBS News report, Mortenson had not visited Korphe until nearly a year after he attempted to climb K2. While Mortenson says that he visited Korphe both after his experience on K2 in 1993 and then a year later in 1994, we are left to wonder what is true.

The news report also questioned the validity of another central story, in which Mortenson claims the Taliban kidnapped him. The CBS reporters talked to the supposedTaliban members in his photograph, who all claimed they were actually Mortenson’s guides.

On a logistical level and perhaps a more disconcerting one, the 60 Minutes investigation alleged that some of the schools that CAI claims to have established have since been abandoned, used for other purposes or were never built; locals also told the reporters that some schools had not received funding from the organization in years, or not at all. The investigation alleged financial mismanagement

at CAI, citing an unbalanced appropriation of funds, with substantial sums seeming to have been used for Mortenson’s personal endeavors, including book signings and travel expenses. Mortenson has since issued a firm statement that asserts the integrity of his mission.

Three Cups of Tea at Convent & Stuart Hall Mortenson wrote about the importance of building friendship through the simple act of sharing tea, and in the process, spanning a cultural divide while also illustrating the underlying bonds between each person. That became a central point of discussion during several co-ed events this year, an idea reiterated in tangible and symbolic ways.

The theme of embracing others was held as a goal itself, so the notion that his experience was fabricated raises numerous questions: Was all that time we spent reading his book a waste? Can you learn from a book of lies?

Students and faculty reactions have varied. Indeed, there has been outcry over the controversy, as some saw the alleged deceit as a crucial blow to the message the schools had been emphasizing throughout the year. Stuart Hall junior Devan Patel says, “The school year was structured on the idea that this man reached out to people in need; to base our curriculum on these lies is insulting to our intelligence and the basis of our moral compass.” Devan added: “By basing the year off these ideas, we perpetuate the lies that he put forth thus encouraging him to continue these erroneous accounts in his other books.”

It seems to be the view of most of the students at Convent & Stuart Hall that while Mortenson should never have made up any part of his story, the story itself is inspiration and should be taken as such. Convent senior Elena Dudum says, “As a writer, I think it is acceptable for someone to fabricate part of a story—because that is part of the pure talent of a writer. However, because Mortenson was writing on his work and this idea of helping a society from a single idea and inspiration, it does kind of lend itself to a story of complete truth—I mean, isn’t that a way for a writer to really grab the audience, to be completely honest and truthful so that they can touch at real human emotion as opposed to their ability to tell a page-turner story?”

Elena and others agree that while the truth would resonate better with people, Mortenson’s readers should not get hung up on the fact that it may include exaggerations. Stuart Hall senior Camron Tarassoly agrees: “When I heard about how the story may have been either exaggerated or, in parts, completely false, I was a little upset but thought that people were getting too excited about it. I just liked reading the book because I liked

the message and liked hearing about someone who helped other people. While it was nice to think that it had actually happened, when the CBS report came out I thought people were forgetting the message and just focusing on whether or not it had really happened. That wasn’t really the point.”

Stuart Hall Social Justice teacher Ray O’Connor says he is reserving judgment until more facts are revealed.

“I am not so ready to condemn the man,” he says. “Mr. Mortenson may not have presented factual details in his book and he may be an incompetent administrator of his charity… This is terribly regrettable and will serve to hinder his noble efforts to build schools. But the man still accomplished some serious stuff in a rough and forgotten area of the world. We ought not deprive him of praise for that. Instead we ought to hear him out. In time, Mr. Mortenson will answer the charges against him. Wisdom demands we wait until he does so.”

People want to believe in “heroes”—with a high

expectation of courage, selflessness, understanding, optimism, and perhaps above all, integrity and inherent honesty. It is easy to see why people want to believe in Mortenson; through his book, various interviews and motivational speeches, he seems like the kind of role model who embodies these values. His story offered hope for peace and progress not through war, but through education. Cynics argue that there are few reallife heroes, so the accusations that derailed the legitimacy of Mortenson’s tale hurt his readers and supporters immensely—especially those who were given hope, strength and inspiration from his story, and especially the students at Convent & Stuart Hall who strive to be difference makers in the world.

Annual High School Poetry Festival Brings Impassioned Writers to the Stage Every spring, Convent & Stuart Hall High School students make some lyrical noise with their writing samples during the High School Poetry Festival. This year’s selections were judged by Maxine Chernoff, chair and professor of creative writing at San Francisco State University, who served as the guest speaker for the April 14 event.

Alumni of all ages have taken advantage of the new website by updating their contact information and submitting Class Notes. Browsing the website keeps everyone in the loop about what their Sacred Heart friends are up to. Class Notes have included recent weddings, births, career changes, relocations– anything current in the lives of our alumni. Navigation takes place through a personalized profile, which allows access to all Sacred Heart alumni information any time you choose. Like the social networking sites, the new alumni website gathers all the fun of reconnecting into one place and makes it accessible to alumni.

This new tool marks a significant opportunity for growth of the Convent & Stuart Hall Alumni Association.

The Society’s educational tradition and heritage may have been developed for young women, but they have a lot to offer young men.

When you think of famous graduates of the Sacred Heart, you might think of congresswoman Dianne Feinstein’51, or even former San Francisco Supervisor Michela AliotoPier ‘86’82, both of whom graduated from our Broadway campus. If you’re feeling particularly risqué, your mind might even go to Stefani Germanotta, alumna of 91st Street in New York, better known as Lady Gaga.

But unless you’re a fan of Glee and Darren Criss SHB’01, you’re not as likely to immediately think of one of the Network’s many male alumni.

Nationally, the Sacred Heart boy is a rare—if increasingly common—breed.

My classmates and I loved our experiences at the two Stuart Halls. This past year, my junior year at Georgetown University, I decided to learn more about the Society’s century-plus history educating boys in the United States and Canada. The Woodstock Theological Center, a Jesuit research center at the university committed to “theological reflection on the human problems of today,” generously supported my research as part of its John & Pat Figge Student Fellowship Program.

When I set out on this adventure last fall, I had little idea what I was getting into.

I planned on writing a short history and a comparison of the different strategies boys’ schools use to expose their students to the Society’s charism and the Goals & Criteria. To do this, I planned to: visit the Province and Network headquarters in St. Louis and St. Charles, MO; conduct interviews and observe daily life at the boys’ high school in Halifax, Nova Scotia; return to Oakwood, CA, to learn from retired Religious of the Sacred Heart; and finally return to my alma mater in San Francisco.

My discussions at each of these places would quickly lead me in another direction.

On a cold January afternoon in Nova Scotia, I arrived at Fountain Academy and found a school that shared the same spirit that makes students’ experience at Convent & Stuart Hall so transformative, but found it expressed in remarkably different terms. I heard students and teachers describe the same productive struggle to define the ideal relationship between the new boys’ and long-standing girls’ secondary programs that has been experienced here as Stuart Hall High School has reached maturity.

A few weeks later, I visited the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles—the Network’s oldest U.S. school and the former home

of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne.

The Academy has been open to boys since 1972, when Patricia Steppe, RSCJ, opened a boys’ division that has evolved much since then. Forty years later, alumni and staff alike were conscious of the ongoing challenge of engaging the boys in the community and the tradition the school so values.

Though this “boy challenge” was present in one form or another at each institution I visited, I was impressed with the variety of strategies individual campuses had adopted to address it. As I listened, I allowed my project to go in the direction these conversations led it: rather than a history, I chose to write a series of reflections that addressed some of the major challenges discussed, as well as some of the strategies implemented. They are designed to be an opportunity for schools to share their experiences and efforts, expanding a discussion that has seemed isolated to individual campuses.

While there are plenty of topics still under discussion, progress is visible everywhere.

Some boys’ schools that had previously lagged behind have recently reached enrollment parity with their local counterparts. This summer, the Associated Alumnae and Alumni of the Sacred Heart welcomes its first alumnus to its board. The Society’s educational tradition and heritage may have been developed for women, but they have a lot to offer young men.

With more boys graduating from Network schools and plenty of attention on the question, that list of famous graduates may soon include many more men.

The Network’s Other All-Boys Classrooms St. Madeleine Sophie Barat saw a need to educate young women, who were underserved by most educational systems. So as she began to open Sacred Heart schools around the world and in the United States, that became her focus.

The strength of that education soon became evident, and in a number of communities, parents wanted for their sons what Sacred Heart was able to offer their daughters. This was the case in San Francisco, which opened Stuart Hall for Boys in 1956, and Stuart Hall High School in 2000. There are programs that are now co-ed, but a few remain with a parallel–but–separate structure, like ours. They include: Sacred Heart Schools, Chicago Academy of the Sacred Heart opened in 1876, and grew to serve K–8 girls. Hardey Preparatory School for Boys opened in 1935 and serves K–8 boys.

Schools of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, LA Academy of the Sacred Heart opened in 1821, and now serves preK–12 girls. In 2006, a boys division, St. John Berchmans School, opened for boys in grades preK–2, with one grade added each year. In 2011–12 they’ll begin admitting ninth graders with the intent of eventually becoming a full, all-boys high school.

Academy of the Sacred Heart, Bloomfield, MI The Academy of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1851 for girls, and now includes a co-ed program for preK–4, an all-girls middle school, an all-boys middle school (Kensington Hall, founded in 2002) and an all-girls high school.

Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Charles, MO The Academy opened to girls in 1818. Out of fiscal necessity, the secondary school there closed in 1972, when the girls’ elementary school merged with the Perier Elementary school for boys to create one K–8 co-ed school.

In 2006, the school divided its middle school students into single-sex classrooms again, with K–6 remaining co-ed.

Sacred Heart School of Halifax, Nova Scotia Sacred Heart School was founded as a boarding and day school in 1849 and now serves girls in grades preK-12. Fountain Academy of the Sacred Heart became part of the Halifax complex in 2009 and serves boys in grades 7–12.

Rulan Tangen has had a career in dance, which has taken her to New York, Canada, and Europe. She is now the founding Director/Choreographer of DANCING EARTH, the nation’s foremost indigenous contemporary dance ensemble. The group was mentioned

by Dance Magazine as “One of the Top 25 To Watch” and was awarded the Expressive Arts Award by the National Museum of American Indians.

The National Dance Project awarded a production grant to the group to create a full-length work rooted in themes of indigenous ecology, titled “Of Bodies Of Elements” (OBOE). Native worldview from science to spirituality is interpreted in the cardinal themes of OBOE, which Rulan incorporated into a semester-long project at Stanford University’s Institute for Diversity in the Arts for an inter-departmental creative response to “Race And Environment.” In 2009 she was invited to be Washington University’s Visiting Distinguished Scholar. Rulan’s first major performance in the Bay Area was at the San Francisco International Arts Festival in May.

5 QUESTIONS with John Dilena SHB’73 Just like our 5 Questions subject in the Winter 2011 issue—Theresa Klatte Foster’79’75—John Dilena has been an integral part of the school Eco-Council since its inception. He is an alumnus of Stuart Hall for Boys and has two children at Convent & Stuart Hall: Jason (gr. 3) and Sofia (gr. 1).

1. What made you want to be actively involved with the schools’ green efforts?

As parents and educators, we all want to provide a clean and safe indoor educational environment for our children and students. After spending the last several years converting our family business, Blue Ribbon Supply, to a US Green Building Council LEED certified distribution facility, it made sense for me to be available as a resource to help support our school’s movement to a green and healthy school.

Blue Ribbon Supply (blueribbonsupply.com) was founded in 1958 and occupies a 40,000-square-foot office and distribution center in South San Francisco. It is one of the largest distributors of commercial cleaning supplies, vending brands, laundry, lodging products and equipment in the United States. We are dedicated to providing our customers with the most innovative and environmentally sustainable products, value and outstanding service.

2. What specific activities have you been involved in, or helped organize?

I assist customers in obtaining LEED and green certifications for their businesses. I’ve helped install solar photovoltaic systems and solar hot water systems through organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Grid Alternatives. My family has helped out at local shoreline cleanup days.

3. What do you think our biggest challenge is (at the schools) in terms of being good stewards of the environment?

We have a challenge in changing the mindset from a consumer throw-away mentality to a reuserecycle mentality. While we can individually make changes, the challenge is to educate our current and future generations so that they may have a healthier planet to live 0n.

4. What’s the best thing your kids have come home and told you they did at school that was eco-friendly?

They have learned how to recycle and know all about composting, which we’ve also practiced at home for several years. However, they now really understand what waste is. They’ve also helped plant our own garden and it’s been great to see them get excited about eating the end product that they assisted in cultivating. I hear them saying things like, “It’s better for the environment if I don’t bathe too often,” and that we should “pick up plastic bags so they don’t end up in a landfill or the ocean”; I know they use potato/corn utensils that are compostable instead of plastic ones that end up in the landfill; they recycle our print paper by using both sides before it is put in the compost.

5. What are some of the easy ways we can be eco-thoughtful at home and with our own families?

Recycle and re-use. Teach your children the value of being thrifty. Buy locally. Support businesses that are environmentally friendly. Eat less meat. Grow your own fruit and vegetables (we’ve found our kids eat more of them this way).

Daniel Plautz and Erik Battista remain best friends after their time at Stuart Hall for Boys. They were co-student body presidents at Lick-Wilmerding.

Erik was also yearbook editor this past year and Dan played in the advanced jazz band. They were co-captains of the lacrosse team for two years in a row. Erik received the coaches lacrosse award this year. Dan was lacrosse team MVP and was selected for the All League BCL West First team. Dan also received the scholar-athlete of the year award.

They initiated many community service projects and were social leaders and role models on campus as well. Erik will be attending New York University and Daniel will be attending University of California, Berkeley, after a fall semester in Patagonia with NOLS. They will be traveling together to play in the PanAmerican Lacrosse Games for USA West this summer in New Zealand.

Jonathan Hemelberg’04’00, a graduate of the California College of the Art, recently finished a mixed media canvas called “Sacred Heart, 2011” and gave it

to Stuart Hall High School faculty Ray O’Connor, who has hung it up in the office he shares with Campus Ministry’s Sergio Vasquez (seen above).

He explained the motivation for the work: "With a dip pen, I choose to build up drawings using small lines until they fill a space, or create a visually pleasing form. Both the process of making and viewing the work operate as a method of meditation. To sit and draw line after line can be an exercise in self sacrifice.

The processes can be tedious, yet it is also necessary in order to achieve the end result. I see the Sacred Heart as a symbol of self sacrifice. ... With the quote on the art by Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ, I integrated all of the themes of my work into a single painting. The painting and the process of making it is about sacrifice, spirituality and devotion.”

The quote he used from the school’s namesake reads: “The history of art in connection with the general history of the human race is a complement to it, ministering to the understanding of what is most intimate, stamping the expression of the dominant emotion on the countenance of every succeeding age. This is what art has left to us, a more confidential record than its annals and chronicles, and more accessible to the young, who can often understand feelings before they can take account of the facts in their historical importance.”

Michael Cresci, who just finished his junior year at Manhattanville College and had the role of captain of the golf team, was honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America for both his play on the course and his work in the classroom. The team was named All-America Scholars by the GCAA at the Division III Awards Banquet. Michael had an excellent year as a junior, averaging 78.0 strokes per round for the second straight season. Playing in all 19 rounds entering the NCAA Championships, the 2010 Freedom Conference Player of the Year had a pair of top-five finishes, four top-10 finishes and seven top-20 results. He was named All-Conference for the third straight year at the Freedom Championships, shooting a two-day score of 164 to tie for ninth place and earn a spot on the second team. Michael shot two of the three lowest rounds in program history during the fall season, carding rounds of 71 in back-to-back events at the Williams Invitational and the Hamilton Fall Invitational. He placed second at Hamilton while leading Manhattanville to a first-place finish.

Frank Duncan, who is a pitcher on the University of Kansas baseball team, was featured in the SF Examiner this spring.

Frank has 14 appearances in relief this season, with a team-best 1.19 ERA, only allowing three runs while striking out 23. Frank was also given the Walt Houk Award by the Kansas baseball team as the best freshman or newcomer to the team.

Winston Parsons helped Friends of the Urban Forest plant its 45,000th tree on Earth Day, April 23, 2011. Winston took the challenge of ringing his neighbors’ CONVENT & STUART HALL
