Joint Message from the Board Chair & Director of Schools

Dear Sacred Heart Community, Each year as we prepare this Annual Report, it becomes a meaningful exercise in acknowledging both our gratitude and our blessings. Gratitude, for the many who continuously place high value upon, and generously invest their time, talent, and treasure in, our school and the educational mission we serve. And blessings, too numerous to count, but all stemming from membership in this incredible, caring, and spirited Sacred Heart family. Well over a century ago, our Atherton campus was started from an act of charity, an initial land grant that enabled the Religious of the Sacred Heart to establish a Sacred Heart school on the Peninsula and continue to fulfill the vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. Over the ensuing decades, this same philanthropic tradition has endured on our campus, enabling us to evolve, expand, and thrive as a school and as a community. As a result, today we have 64 acres in the heart of Atherton, all of which was donated land. We have renovated, preserved, or newly constructed all current buildings on campus–many of which are environmentally sustainable– through capital contributions from our donors. We are in our strongest- ever financial position, and while we do have credit facilities in place, the school carries zero debt. We plan carefully and act cautiously when it comes to improving and maintaining our campus. And we continue to stay focused on our strategic vision, so that families in need of financial assistance always have it available, so that our faculty and staff are adequately and competitively compensated for their work, and so that our campus facilities and resources can keep pace with ever-growing program needs. In short, we take seriously our responsibility to wisely steward our campus, and wisely apply the financial investment of our community. Sometimes this requires making hard choices, unpopular choices. But in every case, we do so with careful consideration for our enrolled students, our families, our faculty and staff, and above all, for the future of this institution. And you continue to make this all possible. We have been extremely fortunate in achieving consistently strong annual fund and auction fundraising results– both of which significantly support our yearly operating budget. In particular, thanks in large part to nearly 100% parent participation over the past few years, the success of our annual fund has enabled us to offset a variety of costs, helping to mitigate yearly tuition increases. As example, 15 years ago parent investment in the Annual Fund was at 64%, and tuition increases were averaging 9%. Today, with 100% pledged participation, our tuition increases have decreased to an average of about 4% annually. So it is with sincere appreciation that we present to you this Annual Report, 2015-2016. Within, you will find a mere snapshot of the overwhelming generosity of our Sacred Heart community, and a brief record of our careful financial stewardship and planning. It is our hope that in reading this report, you will feel as much pride as we do in the role that you and countless others have played in helping us strengthen our school and successfully fulfill our educational mission, once again. The Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton endowment supports scholarships, faculty development, and many other areas critical to the success and financial well-being of the school. Each year the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees carefully reviews the spending policy and recommends an annual spending rate that is appropriate to meet these needs. This spending rate is applied to all gifts where the donor has not otherwise made a specific spending request. The remaining unspent monies are reinvested for continued growth as a hedge against inflation. The spending rate for 2015-2016 was four percent, based on a three-year average of the endowment’s market value.
