In the summer, the Academy opens its doors to boys and girls in grades Pre-School (age three) to 12. Students are offered a variety of courses, including enrichment and review sessions, and credit recovery for those in grades nine to 12. The summer program provides an opportunity for students from many schools – both public and private – to study and work together in a nurturing environment. Courses are designed to meet a variety of student needs, including reinforcement of skills not mastered during the regular school year; preparation for the coming year; advanced work for accelerated students; and a variety of opportunities to develop student talent and creativity. This summer, in addition to the Afternoon Program, the Academy has an array of afternoon offerings for those in grades two to eight. Students can choose from a variety of one-week Camps, two-week Clinics in volleyball and basketball and a one-week session in track and field.
GRADES PRE-SCHOOL TO THREE The Academy offers self-contained classes for those in grades Pre-School (three and fouryear-olds) to three during the morning session from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Students in grades Pre-School to three can enroll in a full-day program which extends until 5:00 p.m.
GRADES FOUR TO EIGHT Students in grades four to eight enroll in four morning classes – one reading, one math and two electives. Enrollment in these classes is limited to 20 students or less. Intensive Math and Intensive Reading and Writing classes are also offered for those needing to strengthen their basic skills. Enrollment in all Intensive classes are limited to six.
GRADE NINE Students enrolled at the Academy for the 2018 to 2019 school year are required to attend the Freshman Bridge Program.
GRADES NINE TO 12 Students in grades nine to 12 may register for various elective courses for credit or enrichment. Credit Recovery options are also available. While many of these offerings will be held in a traditional setting on-campus, a number of classes are available for those interested in off-campus online options allowing for self-directed work. This year, students in grades nine to 12 can also enroll in two week-long camps, which are free, focused on cybersecurity. One is for beginners, and the second is for advanced students who have some experience with cybersecurity or those who complete the beginning session prior.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

ONLINE REGISTRATION AND FORMS AND MATERIALS Available at www.sacredhearts.org
GENERAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration for courses is on a firstcome, first served basis, and classes fill quickly. Applications will be processed once payment is made in full. Once payment and completed registration information are received, a confirmation card will be mailed to parents or guardians of students in grades Pre-School to eight; those in grades nine to 12 will receive a confirmation email instead. Class schedules will be mailed by June 3, 2019, and the Academy reserves the right to cancel classes which do not have sufficient enrollment.
TUITION AND FEES Tuition and fees vary, based on the number and type of courses taken.
WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS A fee of $50 will be assessed for withdrawals on or before April 29, 2019, and $100 between April 30 and May 31. If a student withdraws between June 1 to 9, 50 percent of the tuition paid will be refunded. No refunds will be given after June 10, 2019.
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS Students currently enrolled and attending school in grades Pre-School to 11 in Hawai’i and the continental United States do not need to submit health examination requirements to attend Summer Programs at the Academy. However, international students currently attending school in a foreign country outside of the United States are required – before attending the Academy’s Summer Programs – to submit documents detailing a complete physical and a current TB test result from an evaluation conducted in this country and immunization records (report from country of origin for immunization details only acceptable). These documents must be in English or have an English translation.

HOURS OF OPERATION Breakfast – 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. Morning Snack – 9:45 to 10:00 a.m. Hot Lunch/Afternoon Snack – 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (hot lunch available only to those purchasing meal plan)
PRICES AND PAYMENT Breakfast and snack purchases may be purchased with cash or Mealtime accounts. Prices vary by item. Students in grades Pre-School to 12 can purchase a meal plan to pay for hot lunches only. A five-week meal plan costs $120, with offerings meeting USDA nutrition guidelines, and plans must be purchased before the beginning of the Summer Session.
STANDARDS OF CONDUCT Students are expected to uphold the following standards: n Be respectful and kind in their relations with one another and with all others on campus n Do all required class work and assignments completely and promptly n Be respectful of authority n Take care of school property or the property of other students n Refrain from the use of abusive and offensive language n Turn off and put away cell phones during class time n Dress modestly and neatly at all times n Be truthful and honest n Abide by the “Internet Usage Statement” (detailed on the registration form) in regards to internet use. n Keep classrooms and campus areas clean.

SUMMER CAFETERIA MEALS
Since summer school covers so much material in a limited time period, regular and punctual attendance is required, and for those in grades nine to 12, no more than two on-campus classes may be missed to receive credit for the session. Parents should report a student’s absence by calling the appropriate office by the time noted below: n Grades Pre-School to Eight - Report by 8:15 a.m. to 808.734.5058, ext. 256 n Grades Nine to 12 - Report by 8:15 a.m. to 808.734.5058, ext. 248
ATTIRE AND DRESS CODE School uniforms are not worn during the Academy’s Summer Programs. Students in grades Pre-School to eight should dress in informal, but neat and appropriate, attire. Short shorts, swimwear tank tops and bare midriffs are not acceptable. Boys and girls may wear shoes and socks or sandals with backstraps. Students in grades nine to 12 who are attending on-campus classes are required to wear a sleeved-t-shirt with capris or long jeans or pants. The t-shirt must be appropriate for the setting, may not include inappropriate language or designs and be worn tucked in. Laced, covered athletic shoes are the required footwear and must be worn at all times. Students not adhering to the dress code for their appropriate school-level will be sent home.
PARENT-TEACHER COMMUNICATION Effective communication between parents and teachers plays an important role in helping the student receive maximum benefits from the summer school experience. Parents are encouraged to read all newsletters, notes, emails and messages from the teacher or director and respond immediately if a response is required. Parents who wish to speak to a teacher should call the office at 808.734.5058, ext. 256, for grades Pre-School to eight and ext. 221, for grades nine to 12.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES
GRADES PRE-SCHOOL TO EIGHT A report card will be mailed at the conclusion of the summer session for all students. Students in grades Pre-School to three will receive E (Excellent), S (Satisfactory) or N (Needs Improvement) ratings in their courses. Those in grades four to six students receive a checklist of skills, teacher narrative of student progress and an “E” (Excellent), “S” (Satisfactory) or “N” (Needs Improvement) for each regular and intensive reading and math classes. Students in grades seven and eight will receive a checklist of skills, teacher narrative of student progress and a letter grade (A, B, C, D or F) in regular and intensive reading and writing and mathematics courses. For elective courses, students in grades four to eight will receive an “E” (Excellent), “S” (Satisfactory) or “N” (Needs Improvement) rating.
GRADES NINE TO 12 For students in grades nine to 12, homework sheets will be posted on Edline each week for freshman and all non-online courses. At the conclusion of the first half of the summer session, mid-term grades will be given – all grades will be posted to Edline.
TRANSCRIPTS The summer school office will forward a copy of the summer school report to the student’s school upon a parent’s written request to the appropriate office. For Sacred Hearts Academy students, a copy of the summer school report automatically becomes part of the student’s record.

HOMEWORK AND REPORT CARDS
The Academy’s Lower and Middle School Summer Program offers a variety of courses for reinforcement and enrichment for boys and girls entering grades Pre-School (ages three and four) to eight. Refer to the course summary listing and detailed description section for information on curriculum, class eligibility, course fees and date and times offered. Those in Pre-School can enroll in a Half-Day or Full-Day course. Students in grades Senior Kindergarten to three enroll in a self-contained morning program; those in grades four to eight take one course each of Math and Reading and Writing and two electives. Intensive Math and Reading and Writing courses are available for those in grades four to eight needing more individualized attention, with classes limited to six students. For other courses, class size is 20 students maximum.

DROP-OFF DETAILS (There is no student supervision before 7:30 a.m.) Pre-School students can be dropped off in their classroom from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. Senior Kindergarten to grade three students can be dropped off in Autoline for Morning Care provided in the Student Center free of charge from 7:30 to 8 a.m. Those in grades four to eight can be dropped off in Autoline or at the front of the Administration Building.
AFTERNOON PROGRAM CAMPS AND CLINICS The Academy offers a number of fun and informative afternoon camps and clinics for those in grades four to eight. (See course description for more information about specific Clinic and Camp activities and details.) Sports Clinics are available to those wanting to develop fundamentals or refine skills. These offerings include a two-weeks clinics of volleyball and basketball and a one-week track and field. Other afternoon activities include camps for mathematics, Design Lab and filmmaking. An Afternoon Program-Supplemental (ASPS) is available for students enrolling in a Sports Clinic or Afternoon Camp who need afternoon care during the other weeks of the Summer Session.
AFTERNOON PROGRAM The Academy’s afternoon program for students in grades Senior Kindergarten to six runs from 11:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is administered by Kama’aina Kids. (For details about program activities, pricing and registration information, contact Kama’aina Kids’ Site Coordinator Norma Santiago at 808.208.9963. Recycled items, wire and dry hard clay will be used to create three-dimensional sculptures. CHOW FUN I (Grades Four, Five and Six) Calling all young chefs! Summer is a great opportunity to sharpen life-skills and stir-up creativity! Join Chef Erin as she explores a smorgasbord of dishes. Each week is based on a different theme with new recipes each week – junior chefs will explore the world of baking and create a delicious array of snacks and sweet treats. The young chef students will not only cook, but garner culinary knowledge, including basic food and kitchen safety, proper food handling techniques, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, table-setting and manners and more!. Each unique session is designed to familiarize children with diverse foods, while they create and taste scrumptious recipes themselves! Building self-confidence, creativity and a practical, life-long skills are important ingredients to this culinary program. Section 2

CREATION STATION (Grades Four, Five and Six) Ready to get the “creative juices” flowing? Using the imagination is a must in the Creation Station! Participants in this course will engage and enhance their imagination and creativity during a variety of different, fun, wacky and, sometimes, delicious projects! Working individually and in teams, students will plan, produce and share their unique creations while developing self-expression and self-confidence in a safe and fun environment. What will participants create? Awesome snacks, toys, games and more are on the agenda – anything ranging from a new video game to rainbow popcorn balls, a lava lamp to yarn lei, or an iMovie to a working volcano! LOWER SCHOOL AND JUNIOR HIGH ALPHABETICAL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (MORNING SESSION)
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY (Grades Four, Five and Six) Digital Photography is an introductory course that will utilize classroom iPads to shoot and edit photos. Students will take artistic digital photos following “rules” of composition, elements of art and principles of design. After taking these images, participants will learn to edit and enhance their photos using various digital applications. The Digital Photography process will foster creativity and increase problem-solving skills while teaching students important technical skills. Section 2

DISCOVERING ART (Grades Seven and Eight) Participants in this class will engage their creativity and discover all about art! They will explore and learn how to work with various media, such as clay, organic oils, wax, tie dye and metal. Using what they learn and the media and art techniques, students will create their own ceramic soap dish, tie dye bag, candles, lip gloss, natural soaps and earrings. Section 3

This class is perfect for those wanting to create their own clothing, design outfits or “up-cycle” clothes that no longer fit! In this fashion and basic sewing course, participants will learn to design and bring their creations “to life,” use a sewing machine properly and create basic stitches used in everyday apparel construction. In addition, they will learn to identify and create stitches and will add to their “bank” of fashion terminology. Daily, students will also use computer programs and a sketch book to help them during the design process. Section 2

LOWER SCHOOL AND JUNIOR HIGH ALPHABETICAL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (MORNING SESSION)
GRADE ONE Ready for an amazing and fun summer experience? Hope so, because the first graders are going into the depths of the Amazon rainforest! Students will learn fun facts, including where the Amazon river and rainforest is located, how big it is, what kind of plants and animals live there and much more! This course will prepare students for various academic areas with an inquiry-based approach. The first graders will participate in hands-on centers that focus on reading and writing readiness and math concepts, such as shapes, graphing, patterns and basic number sense. Students will also participate in art and cooking activities that correlate with literature, science and social studies, and they will have the opportunity to go on exciting field trips. Each day, parents should pack a healthy snack and a water bottle, labeled with the child’s name, for their daughter to bring to school. Session 1

GRADE TWO The second graders will spend the summer in an integrated, fun and engaging learning experience that is rich with inquiry! The classroom climate created will fostering caring and inclusiveness while allowing the students to explore analytical, evaluative and reflective thinking. This thoughtfully-sequenced program will develop the most essential preparation skills all second graders need to excel. LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! (Grades Seven and Eight) From shy to standout – students will explore the spotlight in this amazing and fun Creative Drama and Theatre class! Students will be engaged and building confidence, coordination, focus and positive group dynamics. From beginners to experienced “actors,” all are encouraged to develop their skills to “get the part” for the theatre, film or televisions. They also will be empowered to “trust” as they take the stage. And, through theatre games and movement, students will learn to lose inhibitions, trust themselves and others, stimulate their imagination and reveal their “best self.” Utilizing active role-plying, vocal techniques, character development and theater vocabulary, student’s literary and public-speaking skills will be strengthened. METAL AND BEAD JEWELRY CREATION (Grades Seven and Eight) Using unique media, such as Art Clay Silver, 22-gauge silver wire, various sizes of seed beads, numerous fringe heads and a colorful array of glass beads, students will delve making their own, unique silver and jewelry creations. SENIOR KINDERGARTEN Discover and learn about the water that surrounds the beautiful Island! This summer, Senior Kindergartners are invited to explore the wonderous ocean and become an “oceanographer,” learning all about the seas and the creatures that inhabit it and call it “home.” The students also will get to know renowned children’s authors, such as Eric Carle and Leo Lionni, who will transport them along the exciting summer adventure and will even read about famous oceanographers who discovered and explored the oceans all around the world. Each week, the kindergartners will focus on different sea creatures and literature, math, art, music, physical movement and technology to explore and create an awesome and balanced experience filled with a wide gamut of hands-on learning. DESIGN LAB (Grades Four, Five and Six) “Design-thinking” is the creative strategy used to find a solution or solve a problem. Everyone is a designer “at-heart” and capable of devising creative solutions to solve real problems when inspired. In this Design Lab, students will receive a challenge to solve using design-thinking. To piece together the puzzle, designers will utilize a variety of media, technologies and materials available to them to investigate the problem, define what needs to be addressed, brainstorm creative solutions, build and create a prototype and, finally, test, revise and shares their solution. Through this process, students will become innately connected to the challenge as they work and develop a genuine interest in finding their own unique solution or solutions. Boys and girls have an array of enrichment and credit recover courses offered during the Academy’s High School Summer Program. While incoming Academy students entering grades seven and nine are required to take their respective orientation classes in preparation for the upcoming school year; most of the other credit courses are open to all students entering grades nine to 12. The High School Summer Program includes courses conducted in a traditional classroom setting as well as a complete ofTUITION AND FEES: fering of online courses. Freshmen Orientation $200 The online offerings, including the credit (Academy students only) recovery options, are offered through Fuel Education In-Class Instruction Course (Half Credit)* $450 These online courses are self-directed and may be taken either on- or off-campus. Junior High (Grade Seven) Orientation $200 It is recommended that students take online (Academy students only) courses on-campus to receive support from a supervising teacher, who will be available Online Course (Half Credit)* $450 on-campus from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. In order to receive course credit, all Online Course (One Credit)* $695 work for online courses must be completed by July 12, 2019. Topics to be covered include parallel lines and planes, congruent triangles, inequalities and quadrilaterals. Various forms of proof will be studied.
