Every day we wake up with the hope that the day ahead will be better than yesterday. Parents go out of their way to make sure that their children have a better upbringing than the one they had. The same goes for SAcrèche Magazine.

South Africa is waking up to a new transforming country every day.

On 18 July we celebrate the life of one of the world’s greatest men, President Nelson Mandela, with 67 minutes of charity on Mandela Day. In 1994 we closed a very painful chapter and on page 28 we look at children’s rights to equality in ECD. Ideas on how to celebrate Mandela Day with your children are in our cover story. In our Health section on page 6, educate yourself on Mental Health conditions. Your child might be suffering from one without you even knowing it.

South Africa is one of the worst nations when it comes to savings.

Financial education is key in growing a savings culture and this can be done by educating our young ones and involving them in real money matters. In our finance section we talk about saving 10% of your income regularly because July is National Savings Month.

There is a saying in Sepedi that says “Go anegelwa ke go tingwa” so I will say no more. We have compiled this issue for the parent, teacher, uncle, aunt, NGO worker, and tertiary student. Most importantly we do it for the children. Enjoy July; Enjoy SAcrèche Magazine.

NACCW Conference

Two girls die in crèche Two girls have lost their lives on June 23 2015 after a crèche in Hillbrow caught fire. The cause of the fire is not yet known but when residents rushed to the second storey flat they could not see the children.

Terrified, the two girls aged 2 and 3 hid under the bed. It was only after the firefighters extinguished the fire that they discovered the girls. 7 of their classmates were saved.

Psychosocial Health A quarter of SA children need psychosocial help. This is after a study carried by ICDI administered tests on 1 003 girls and 1 084 boys.

The tests were done in 4 provinces (WC, FS, KZN and EC) on 5 year olds using the UPSI-5 diagnostic tool.

Psychosocial tests look at the relationship between the environment or social factors of a child and their individual thought and behaviour.

The National Association of Child Care Workers will, on 1 July 2015, hold a conference at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Minister Bathabile Dlamini will give a key-note address on the day.

The event starts at 08h30 and will see experts and professionals from other countries share ideas and lessons on how to improve the Child and Youth Care Workers profession.

Storyplay training Ilifa Labantwana will host a storyplay training in North West during the second week of July. The Storyplay Training Workshop will take place in Phokeng and the focus will be on experiential learning through intergrating play and story telling in an unstructured environment.

This is to help ECD practitioners with story-telling, story-reading as well as writing down personal stories and acting out each othere’s stories. The project will run for 1 year reaching 31 women from 20 ECD’s therefore 1 400 children.

On 25 June 2015, Minister Bathabile Dlamini received 2 children abducted to Malawi.

The two children, a boy and a girl, were abducted from the care of their grandmother by a woman who was posing to be a former teacher.

Malawian officials reported that the children were subjected to emotional and physical abuse. They reported that the children will need extensive counselling

The University of Cape Town’s Children’s Institute held a study to review child’s deaths in South Africa.

This is on the back of the Medical Research Council’s 2009 study titled the National Child Homicide study.

The study found that 44% of all child deaths was a result of some form of abuse.The study looked at 2 mortuaries in Cape Town and KwaZulu Natal.

The study found that in 2014, 711 deaths were reviewed. Of the 711 fatalities, 53% of child deaths were due to natural causes, 43% due to unnatural causes and 4% were undetermined.

31.8% of the deaths were due to lower respiratory tract infection with homicide claiming 14.9% and 13% was due to traffic injuries. Children under 5 suffered the most fatalities.

mental illness at early childhood stage More than 17 million South Africans suffer from mental health disorders and most people grow up with mental health disorders well into their adulthood.

sychosocial health falls under mental health and it has to do with how individuals view themselves and how they deal with stressful situations.

Psychosocial Healthy people like themselves, accept their mistakes, take better care of themselves and others and have a positive outlook amongst other things.

Psychosocial disability is just one of the many mental health disorders people can suffer from. A lot

of awareness on mental health issues is focused on adults but the signs often show at crèche-going age. In South Africa, 1 in 3 suffers from some form of metal health disorder. Mental illness is a health problem that significantly affects a person’s feelings, thoughts, behaviour and how they relate to other people. More than 17 million South Africans suffer from mental health disorders. Only 25% of them will ever get treatment.

Children need a healthy mind in order to reach their full potential.

There are many factors that affect the mental health of a child. A child needs to grow up in an environment that is loving, warm, friendly and understanding. Parents do not need to have money for their children to feel loved and wanted.

There is still a lot of misunderstanding and taboo when it comes to mental health. People tend to think the worst and they cannot imagine that someone with mental health problems can lead a normal life. There are many forms of men

tal health disorders. Below is a list of mental health disorders children can suffer from: Emotional Disorders: These include behaviour and emotional issues that usually result in bad behaviour and bad attitude.

Autism falls under this category.

Autism is a mental condition where a child finds it very difficult to communicate, make friends and has great difficulties with language.

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) find it difficult to stay focused, controlling their behaviour and paying attention and they are over active.

Oppositional Defiant Disorders (ODD): A child who suffers from this usually is out of control and does what they want. They challenge every-

Anxiety Disorder: This is characterised by worrying all the time about many things.

The best way to deal with this kind of disorder is to educate yourself and identify these symptoms in the child as well as to train the child in using relaxation techniques when

Some disorders begin during childhood and continue well into adulthood if untreated. Detecting a disorder in a child is difficult because children are constantly developing and changing. Certain elements in their behaviour may not necessarily be a disorder but a stage that they may be going through temporarily.

If this unwanted behaviour goes on for extended periods of time and starts to disrupt their normal life then they may be deemed a disorder and you should seek help because your child may be suffer-

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): This is caused by an imbalance in a chemical responsible for reactions to emotional stimuli such as fear, happiness, sadness or aggression. Put in simple terms,

they start to feel anxious. Should this not be dealt with then the child will actively avoid situations which might make them anxious, thereby missing out on important life-lessons.

The cause of most mental illnesses is not known. Most mental disorders are a result of a combination of factors including bloodline, traumatic experiences, a stressful environment, diet and biological factors.

Family bullying: when siblings turn on each other.

The home is a place where children usually feel safe. Most children are not afraid of the bully at crèche but the bully living under the same roof.

any children are bullied every day in crèche, but many more are bullied before they even leave the house. Uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters are all guilty of bullying at some point, especially parents.

A bully uses strength to get others to do what they want. A bully does not have to pose a physical danger to the bullied but there is emotional bullying where emotional blackmail is the weapon used.

My brother has 2 daughters, a 4 year old who goes to crèche and a 2 year old who stays home. The younger one is physically smaller yet she constantly bullies her bigger sister. The sister is not even allowed to sing her crèche songs at home because whenever she tries, her younger sister screams “SHUT UP” at the top of her voice. This cannot be confused with

sibling rivalry. The younger sister is clearly a bully.

This is not a special case. Studies show that bullying is more common at home than outside. Bullying is a learned behaviour picked up from home. Parents are the biggest bullies because they usually use threats to get children to do what they want. “Do that or else” is a common threat in the household and most parents do not feel that that is a form of bullying but rather strict parenting. Ask yourself how you would feel if you heard a child saying the same thing to your child.

If it is unacceptable for a child to say it then it is also unacceptable for the parent to say it because you as the parent are indirectly teaching your child bullying tactics. Your child will learn to react a certain way to certain words irrespective of who says them. Re

Bullying is a major cause of Mental Health Disorders in children. Bullied children end up feeling depressed and suffer from anxiety. search shows that a harsh parenting style will usually produce a child who is a bully.

Siblings are going to be in each others’ business and they are bound to quarrel and fight. This is part of growing up that all siblings go through. Bickering is common but there is a line that should not be crossed and parents should know when to step in and stop bullying before it goes too far.

Insults where bad language is used to shame the other child is unacceptable and should not be allowed in the house. If a child uses bad language then chances are they learnt it from someone in the family.

Physical aggression is a common form of bullying where the physical health of the other child is threatened. A bully does not have to be physically big in order to pose a physical danger to others and parents should not make the mistake of thinking that just because a child is big then they can defend themselves against bullying. Bullies intimidate their victims mentally. Physical aggression may include biting, kicking, hair pulling, pushing and scratching.

Throwing tantrums is another form of bullying where the bully uses destruction to get their way.

They would usually damage things, kicking and screaming so that they may get the upper hand over their siblings. Parents should be very careful of this form of behaviour because the other child may think that they are not important enough since their sibling always gets his or her way.

When there are more than 2 siblings in the house then bullies may gang up on the other sibling. 2 siblings can gang up on the one thereby making it an unfair fight. This does not even have to be a physical fight. The two siblings can always take each others’ sides thereby making sure that the one sibling does

not have a say on anything in the house.

Bullying amongst siblings can be caused by a number of things. Feelings of frustrations may cause the one child to bully another. A child may also feel that they are unwanted by their parents and this can also cause bullying to happen. Jealousy among siblings is a common cause of sibling bullying. Parents are to blame for this because in most situations siblings feel jealous towards one another because the one child is deemed to be the favourite.

Bullying is a major cause of Mental Health Disorders in children. Bullied children end up feeling depressed and suffer from anxiety. The worst part about sibling bullying is that it is hardly spoken about.

There are steps that parents can take to stop bullying in the home.

Stop Jealousy- Children are jealous of one another because they feel that the other child is loved more than them. Parents must make it a point to treat each child equally.

Teach respect-Bullies don’t respect their victims.

Teach the child bully to respect their brother or sister, but most importantly they need to respect themselves and not use underhand tactics to get ahead in life.

Responsibility-The bully must be held responsible for their unwanted behaviour. It is never the fault of the bullied and parent should not punish both children because the victim would end up feeling even worse.

Problem Solving-Children do not automatically know how to problem solve. Without knowing the right way of fixing a problem, aggression may be mistaken for an effective problem solving technique by a child who does not know any better. Children are only going to know what they see and are taught.

others love nothing more than hearing how smart their child is; but what is intelligence and is there any way to make a child intelligent? Is there anything that a parent can do to make their child more intelligent or is intelligence something that cannot be learned but rather born with?

There are many educational products such as books, toys, videos, DVDs and activities that claim to boost a child’s intelligence. Some of these products come backed by research so as to convince mothers that by using them then their children will grow up to be the next Einstein.

The truth is that many products are ineffective.

What is more interesting is, those experiments suggest that praising kids for being intelligent actually drives them to act dumb.

Belief about intelligence can get in the way of a child’s development. A child who believes that they are intelligent or smart is less likely to learn from their mistakes or be more accommodating of others’ opinions.

What Kind of Intelligence Does Your Child Have?

The biggest development of the brain happens between ages 0-6. Some children are born with a certain level of aptitude that is above the average child’s. Genes play some role when it comes to intelligence. Genes, though, are not the only thing that determines how your child will fare.

A nurturing environment is more important than blood line. Research shows that an enriched environment increases a child’s brain size.

There are activities that parents can do with their children to aide their brain development.

play. A child’s age is indicative of the level of development and parents must not expect their children to act matured, even though they may show signs of intelligence.

AGE 0-3 YEARS Rapid growth and development takes place throughout your child’s brain. Movement is very important during this stage. Stretching, balancing, throwing, catching, running, jumping and all forms of movement found during play are important for this age group. Movement starts in the tummy and needs to be encouraged on a continuous basis. Playing is important in increasing your child’s intelligence level AGE 4-5 YEARS Your child’s language will blossom during this period. Expand your child’s world by engaging their

imagination. Explore movements that fascinate them like bouncing different ball sizes, using the hulahoop, reading and telling stories, using opposites more often like hot and cold, setting structure and milestones. Engage them in messy play and also include them in activities like cooking and doing the dishes.

AGE 6-7 YEARS Problem solving skills are cemented around this age.

Engage your child in activities that challenge them and their knowledge. Encourage them to take their own decisions. They must be able to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Introduce time as a limiting factor.

Since 2008, rhinos have been under constant attack from ruthless poachers. Out of a population of 30 000 rhinos that are left today (there were over 70 000 rhinos 30 years ago), over 25 000 live in Southern Africa.

and certain birds depend on rhinos because they feed on the ticks and bugs found on rhino skins.

Therefore by protecting the rhino then we will be protecting many other species such as plants, insects, birds, reptiles and fish. This is what is meant by protecting the ecosystem.

Learning about the importance of rhinos and why we need to keep them alive is important for future generations so that they can carry on the good work done by those who are risking their lives every day to save this important animal.

Rhinos are the second largest animals alive after the elephant. They are part of the big five (Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard) and there is no telling what will happen to their ecosystem should they all die.

Rhinos are important for us, especially since South Africa is home to over 80% of them. Rhinos attract visitors to our country and those tourists make our country rich by buying South African products.

Humans are responsible for the death of the rhino.

For this reason children should stand up through learning and shout at the top of their lungs to stop the slaughter of this beautiful African animal.

n December 5 2013 South Africa and the world woke up to the sad news of President Nelson Mandela’s passing. He was the first black president of a democratic South Africa and a man loved and known throughout the world for his fight and sacrifice against Apartheid. This is the man who left us with a legacy like no other.

Thanks to him and his friends in the struggle, who gave up their chance at normal life, we have the most progressive constitution in the world. Section 28 in the Constitution is the Children’s Act which is dedicated to the rights of all children in the country. The R1 billion Nelson Mandela children’s hospital will open its doors early next year. It will be one of only 5 health facilities in Africa dedicated to children.

When Nelson Mandela was 67 years a public campaign was started by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. People must dedicate a minute for each year that Nelson Mandela has been fighting for our rights. His birthday was chosen for this important occasion.

On July 18, each person must dedicate only 67 minutes of their lives to doing something for others. No matter how small it is, we all have to do something for others without expecting something in return. From sweeping the streets to painting walls, there is something we all can do to change one life 67 minutes at a time.

Children are going to inherit the world from us. They will learn how to treat it based on how we treat it. They won’t listen to our words but watch our actions. If we throw rubbish on the street and not in the rubbish bin then we should not blame them for living in a dirty environment.

We cannot all be as great and internationally known as President Mandela.

The least that parents can be are good role models for their children.

For ideas on what you and your child can do in your community during 67minutes: Playgrounds: Most playgrounds in communities are in a bad state. They are hardly maintained, so if you are a handyman then grab your child and your toolbox and get to fixing the swings at your local playground.

Your child will learn to keep public spaces clean by not throwing garbage everywhere and they will also learn about recycling.

Exercise: If you are not a very active person then exercise for 67 minutes with your child. Although this day is about doing something for others, those watching will gain a valuable lesson in seeing you and your young one promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Hospital/Clinic visit: take a book and go to the hospital and read to people who are not enjoying good health. Make sure to pass by the children’s ward and put some smiles on the future of our country.

Charity begins at home: If you are not up to going out then there is nothing wrong with dedicating this time to changing the lives of those you care for the most. Not because you will get something in return but because their happiness will rub off on to others.

The most important thing about Mandela Day is to make sure that you have fun and your child has fun too. Fun and games are how children learn. They will learn the importance of the day. They will also learn about President Nelson Mandela but most importantly they will learn to be selfless and help others without expecting anything in return; even if it is for 67 minutes.

Cleaning: Clean a public space for a change. Go to a taxi rank or school or dump-site and clean up. Separate the

he South African Savings Institute has declared July National Savings Month. It is no surprise because South Africans are bad at saving.

There are many excuses people use for not saving and not earning enough is the biggest.

Brazilians and Russians who are at the same income level have a far better saving culture. This is because they grow up being educated about the benefits of saving.

According to Mohale Ralebitso, a director at old Mutual, “If saving money becomes as easy as taking credit, then people will save more”. This is true because people prefer to buy things on credit than save.

It is easy to buy a lotto ticket than it is to put away R50 because of all the paper work involved.

It is recommended that a person needs to save 10% of their income every month. You should have an emergency fund for rainy days. This must be 3 months worth of your monthly expenses according to the South African Savings Institute.

Saving vs Investing Saving is putting money away bit by bit so that you will end up with a lump sum. Investing is taking a lump sum and making it grow by buying things like

Saving You can start at any age to save.

A small fee of R50 is needed for most accounts but you can deposit any amount afterwards.

For children’s savings accounts you usually need R10.

The bank pays you for saving through interest.

All banks in South Africa have accounts for children including Post Bank You will never lose your capital (the money that you save) You can withdraw the money whenever you want to or you can fix the money and only withdraw it after a certain period of time.

Investing Investing can grow your money much faster than saving Investments are long term.

You will not get the money for a long time There is a risk that your money won’t grow and you might lose some of it.

Investing is best for long term goals such as education and big projects.

Accidents and emergencies cannot be prevented but they can be minimised. It is up to the parent to make sure your child can handle an emergency.

n June 23 2015, 2 children lost their lives in a fire at a crèche in Hillbrow. One child death is one too many, especially if the death could have been prevented.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), injury and violence are the major killers of children in the world. Children have choked to death, suffered fatal falls, drowned; some have even been accidentally shot. These horrific accidents take place in places where children are supposed to be protected and nurtured.

Accidents and emergencies will happen no matter how much we try and take steps to prevent them.

Children attract accidents. It is their nature to explore and push boundaries. One of the most important jobs as a parent is to make sure that your child can handle anything that life throws at them.

Children need special protection because they are the most vulnerable members of society. The rights of children are protected underSection 28 of the Bill of Rights titled “Children”.

arly Childhood Development programmes really shape a child’s future. A child who is given attention at home, hugged, kissed and nurtured, has a significant advantage over those who don’t.

South Africa is still recovering from the effects of Apartheid. Black children are still worse off than white children even in crèche. A video surfaced of teachers of Grade R classes separating children according to their race. They went on a school trip win 2 busses; one for white kids and the other for blacks. The video clearly shows the children being led off the bus in 2 lines, one for blacks and one for white children.

Nelson Mandela once said “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children”. There is a lot that still needs to transform and ECD is one of them. Some people refuse to let go of the past and such people should be nowhere near an ECD class. Children need to grow up within an inclusive environment where colour does not mean anything.

There are children who go to crèches that have special teachers, the best toys; they have child-friendly toilets and a specialised diet every day. On the other hand there are those crèches where children are lucky if they eat something in crèche, they use candles and have broken chairs and pencils, they use bricks and stones for toys and they have never been on a swing before.

This is the reality for more than 60% of the country’s children. These children did not choose to be poor. They are not poor because their parents are lazy or by God’s will. They are poor because the Apartheid system designed conditions so that only a few children get good opportunities while the rest of the country fight over what is left of the country’s resources.

Children must not grow up in a society that still promotes the evils of the past. Their rights are espoused in the constitution. They must not grow up believing that they deserve to be poor and to use pit toilets.

Education is the main weapon in the fight for equality.

Children must learn that they are all the same irrespective of who says what. Teachers must be champions of equality and not separate children like those in Curro.

Equality should be inclusive of Gender: it does not matter whether it is a girl or a boy or if the boy is effeminate or the girl likes playing like a boy. Children in crèche can be grouped according to their gender but they must not be disadvantaged as a result thereof.

KIDDIE SHOE STORE

Race: All colours are the same. No child should get more attention or be liked more than another just because of the colour of their skin.

Disability: Children who have physical impediments and challenges are just the same as the rest of the children. They have other strong points that should be highlighted. No child should feel like they are not good enough just because they were born different. Children should be taught about disabilities so that they understand and not make fun of one another.

Religious Beliefs: Some children come from Christian families; others have Rastafarian parents while some may come from families who practice African culture and beliefs. Just because a child’s mother is a Sangoma it does not mean that the child must be treated differently.

Family Status: A child should not have to suffer or answer for their families. Children must grow up in an environment that encourages them to be themselves on their own terms and not have to answer for the kind of family that they come from. A child from a poor family deserves just as much, if not more, as a child from a wealthy family.

Old-Fashioned Spicy Pudding Dumplings INSTRUCTIONS

CULINARY USAGE

1. For the sauce - heat the water, sugar and spices together until the sugar has dissolved.

2. For the batter - melt the margarine in a pan, then add the apricot jam and stir until melted.

3. Add bicarbonate of soda (the mixture will foam), then add flour and stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a sticky dough.

4. Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the boiling syrup, cover and simmer for 15 - 20 minutes or until the dumplings are cooked.

5. Serve with custard or ice-cream.

You will often find cloves in seasoning blends alongside cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg as it goes so well with all of these spices.
