ME E T R EG I NA O NE O F O U R A RT ISA N S My name is Regina Kathingo from Makadara. I am a widow, a mother and grandmother. I joined OTHERS in 2014 through Ann Mwongeli and Elizabeth Mulinge. My life changed immediately after I joined. I learnt through them how to make products that were sold overseas, the products included Christmas reindeer, flags, tote bags and Easter chicks. Out of the orders that we received I was able to earn 29,000Ksh or $290. This income from OTHERS enabled me to send my son to college and look after my ailing husband who unfortunately passed. I have also been able to begin a small business with capital from my OTHERS income. I am diabetic and through the income from OTHERS I have been able to afford my special medication and also help those in my support group who are unable to access medication due to financial challenges. I have engaged with community counselors for living with diabetes.

Others is the Salvation Army’s global social enterprise, using fair trade as a tool for job creation, empowerment and poverty alleviation.

The main goal of OTHERS is creating employment. The core of the concept is that each product that you buy contributes to the creation of fairly compensated work for people who would otherwise have limited opportunities. Production units are in many cases linked with The Salvation Army’s community development programs, where producers receive necessary counselling and support.

In this catalog we wish to present a selection of our products and some snapshots from our production. For a comprehensive list of products and prices, please see our distributor’s catalog at the end of this catalog.

O UR P R O D UCT I O N

OT H E R S IN BA N GLA D E SH Others began as a local initiative for poverty alleviation in Bangladesh in 1997, and Bangladesh remains our largest producer country, currently involving around 760 producers (both women and men).

Others Bangladesh produces a wide range of handloomed products, embroidered products, jute products, wooden products, natural fibre and leaf products, and knitted items. Production groups include women’s groups in and around the capital city Dhaka and in a number of villages in Central and Western parts of the country, as well as a handloom unit, carpentry unit and sewing unit in the city of Jashore. Some producers are recruited through specific community development projects run by The Salvation Army, such as The Salvation Army’s rehabilitation center in Old Dhaka which provides holistic care and training for women who have been victims of trafficking or exploitation.

The Others operation is followed up by The Salvation Army’s local team in Bangladesh, as well as partners from the Others Global network coordinated by The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters.

OT H E R S IN K E N YA Others’ first contacts with Kenya were in 1999, with formal connections to some producer groups starting from 2004. Others currently works with nine different production groups in Kenya, located in both urban and rural areas. Products build on locally available raw materials and artisan’s skills, and include bead/ wire products, items made from sisal and leaf, as well as items made from recycled materials such as plastic and paper. Most producers are also linked with savings- and loans groups overseen by The Salvation Army locally.

In 2020 the partnership with Kenya was expanded to also include small-scale coffee farmers in the area of Matungulu. The first coffee was launched in Norway Christmas 2020, and the goal is to build a long-term partnership to help raise the standard of living for the Matungulu farmers.

At our own workshop in Jashore, Bangladesh, we weave high quality textiles on traditional looms.

Our skilled artisans weave all our tea towels and most of our aprons by hand, without mechanical assistance.

K I TC HEN KNIT

Knitted dishcloths, pack of 2 100% cotton, comes in a set of navy blue and white. The knitted surface is ideal to scrub and clean surfaces and tables.

Our best-selling aprons are made by several of our producer groups. Some are produced on the sewing machines at The Salvation Army’s rehabilitation center in Old Dhaka, providing training and care for women who have been victims of trafficking or exploitation.

The traditional “Dhaka” purses with an updated design. Hand embroidery on cotton. The purses are stuffed and lined, and are closed with a matching tassel zipper.

WO O D E N SH O EH O RN

These beautiful wooden shoe horns are designed by the Norwegian product designer Sverre Uhnger and are produced at Others’ carpentry workshop in Jashore, Bangladesh.

Together with our head carpenter Anath and his team, Sverre has developed a functional product of good quality. The shoe horn is made from locally sourced Rain Tree wood and has been treated with a varnish consisting of natural local ingredients.

The shoe horn is available in two sizes, 60 cm and 20 cm. The smallest version is sold in a hand-sewn bag.

Many of our products incorporate embroidery detail, and this skill employs a large number of Others artisans in Bangladesh. This draws on a long tradition of embroidery, that is passed down from generation to generation.

Our artisans are involved in all steps of the production of every product — from sourcing raw materials, to cutting, sewing, finishing and packaging.

However, far too many lack the opportunity to find a job, or are forced to work under poor working conditions. By creating flexible jobs with fair wages and access to international markets, we wish to do our part in giving more people access to decent employment. A particular priority is to ensure that women are given access to paid employment and the opportunity to earn their own income.

Our producers are primarily recruited through The Salvation Army’s local programs. Others has active production groups in Bangladesh and Kenya. Others partners with over 800 artisans. All products are handmade.

The materials for Others products are locally and sustainably sourced. We strive to combine the best of local hand-craft skills and traditions in our products.
