General Lyndon Buckingham and Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham
The General and World President of Women’s Ministries
Dear Cadets,
What a joy and privilege it is for Commissioner Bronwyn and I to greet you on this day of your ordination and commissioning as Salvation Army officers.
Today is a day of both congratulations and anticipation. You are to be commended for completing your training – well done! The time of preparation has come to an end - now you step out into officership equipped for the mission and ready to act.
Your mission, as declared in your Officer Covenant, is clear: “Called by God, to proclaim the gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ as an officer of The Salvation Army.” The mission of the Army is God’s mission - to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation (Mark 16:15 NIV). This is your mission as well. This is your calling. You go out into a world that needs champions. It needs supporters, encouragers, and advocates. It needs you, the servants of God, to be champions of His mission - to seek the lost, feed the hungry and to meet human need in His name without discrimination.
Our prayer for you is Paul’s word to the Church in Colossae: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:6–7). Here is the heart of mission, the strength for ministry: living our lives in God and for God. May you continue to live in and for the Lord as you champion His mission in the years ahead.
May God bless you richly in your service for Him.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
—Luke 4:18–19 NLT
Dear Champions of the Mission,
Commissioners Ralph and Susan Bukiewicz Territorial Commander and Territorial President of Women’s Ministries/ Territorial Leader for Officer Development
Your journey has brought you to this pivotal moment, where your Calling, Covenant and Commission position you for greater impact on the lives and communities where you will serve. You are among those chosen by God’s anointing and appointing, as described in 1 Peter 2:9–10:
”But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” (The Message)
From this day forward, you will focus on the same Mission that Jesus embraced, as He read from the scroll of Isaiah in the Nazareth synagogue:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” (Luke 4:18-19 NLT)
Your efforts will advance this Mission, and you will “champion” it for others as you enthusiastically serve your people, defend His truths, and battle for the purposes entrusted to you by God. He will give you daily opportunities to reflect His love, demonstrate His Grace, and share His hope with others in your community. As you serve in His strength, He will bring about results that will last for eternity.
We thank God for your faithfulness to His Calling and celebrate your obedience, which has brought you to this doorway of ministry. May you always experience His presence and blessing in your ministry.
Coram Deo.

At the first Salvation Army meeting Kenneth Maynor attended, the congregation consisted of five people. But he felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. The corps in Ohio felt like home, and at a cadets campaign meeting, he heard God’s voice and committed himself to officership. Cheryl Staaf, whose parents and grandparents were Salvationists in Erie, PA, accepted Christ at a Sunbeam rally, before she was old enough to be an official Sunbeam. From that time on, she knew God wanted her to become an officer. Their paths met when Cheryl’s cousin, Kenneth’s corps officer, asked her to become the Corps Helper. They married in 1977 and soon entered the School for Officer Training as members of the Proclaimers of Salvation session.
In 1980, they were commissioned as Officers and served at 3 Northeast Ohio corps before moving to the Empire State Division in 1987 as Divisional Youth Leaders. In 1992, Captain Kenneth Maynor became Assistant Territorial Youth Secretary and Captain Cheryl Maynor became Territorial Sunday School and Christian Education Bureau Director; their next appointments were as Territorial Candidates’ Secretary and Assistant Territorial Candidates’ Secretary, respectively. They became Divisional Leaders in the Southwest Ohio and Northeast Kentucky Division in 1999. In 2008, he was appointed Territorial Secretary for Program; and she, Associate Territorial Secretary for Program and Ambassador for Prayer and Spiritual Formation, and later, Territorial Secretary for Communications. The Maynors became Territorial Leaders of the Japan Territory in 2016. Five years later, they took up duties as Principal and Assistant Principal of the International College for Officers in London, England. In 2023, they became Zonal Leaders for the Americas and Caribbean Zone.
They love the vocation God has chosen for them, especially because it’s a shared ministry. The Maynors’ two sons, along with their wives, are Salvation Army officers. They have eight wonderful grandchildren.

Dear Champions of the Mission,
On behalf of the officers and staff of the College for Officer Training, I want to share my congratulations with each of you upon your Ordination and Commissioning as Salvation Army Officers.
My wife and I have both counted it a rich blessing to have been a part of your personal and corporate journey of transformation over these past two years. We have seen you embrace the countless opportunities to fully engage in the “heart, head, and hands” mission of the CFOT. You have done this through your worship, your studies, and your ministry at varied field training experiences. Well done, my friends!
As you are now prepared to begin your first appointments as Salvation Army Officers, please know of our continued prayers for you, your families, and the communities that you will be serving. We pray that you will continue to be focused on the mission of Christ and His purposes for The Salvation Army. We pray for an anointing of the Holy Spirit upon your preaching, teaching, and daily practical ministry.
“For a long time now—to this very day—you have not deserted your fellow Israelites but have carried out the mission the LORD your God gave you” Joshua 22:3 (NIV).
May God Bless the Champions of the Mission!
In His Service.

1. The Signing of the Officer Covenant
The Officer Covenant is signed by a person to be commissioned and ordained. The Covenant is made between that person and God. It is the means whereby a person binds himself or herself to God in the making of solemn vows.
The Bible has many examples of believers entering into sacred covenants with God, who accept their covenants as a serious undertaking. Each person signing the Officer Covenant does so of their own free will, in the clear understanding that the commitment is intended to be lifelong.
2. The Ordination and Commissioning
The Ordination and Commissioning allows the wider membership of the Body of Christ to gather in order to warmly affirm and encourage those about to become officers, and in order to witness publicly the moments of ordination and commissioning.
The cadets are helped by the prayers and intercession of the faithful. The cadets declare before many witnesses that they will be loyal to Christ, will hold to the Doctrines of the Army, will be available to the marginalized, and will be obedient to the principles and purposes for which God raised up The Salvation Army.
3. The Appointing
The Appointing is when specific responsibilities are placed upon the newly ordained and commissioned officer. The officer is granted the authority both to serve and to lead within the ranks of The Salvation Army. This is the outward authentication of an inward summons from God, and the imparting to the officer of the obligation to be a servant of all for the sake of Christ. tHE St

The Cadets (standing) will say: In the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and in the presence of the officers, soldiers, and friends of The Salvation Army here assembled, we declare that:
1. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
2. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.
3. We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co–equal in power and glory.
4. We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.
5. We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become
The Chief Secretary will say: Do you promise faithfully to maintain and proclaim these truths?
The cadets will reply: We do!
sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
6. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.
7. We believe that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit, are necessary to salvation.
8. We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.
9. We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.
10. We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
11. We believe in the immortality of the soul; in the resurrection of the body; in the general judgment at the end of the world; in the eternal happiness of the righteous; and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
The cadets will reply: We do!
The Chief Secretary will say: Do you promise by holy living, boundless charity and adherence to the principles and discipline of the Army to show yourselves at all times
The Chief Secretary will say: Do you regard it as your duty to bear this witness everywhere, to strive to lead all persons to their only Savior, and for His sake to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unloved, and befriend those who have no friends?
to be faithful officers of The Salvation Army?
The cadets will reply: We do!
The Chief Secretary will say: In the name of God I accept the declarations and promises you have made this day. We will now proceed to your ordination and commissioning.
The officer is offered up to the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit by the intercession of the faithful in Christ. The officer declares by the signing of the covenant and by the commissioning that he or she will be loyal to scriptural truth and, by example in life, word and unsparing service, be true to his or her calling as Christ’s messenger.

Take Thou My Life, Lord
I would be Thy holy temple, Sacred and indwelt by Thee; Naught then could stain my commission, ‘Tis Thy divine charge to me.
Take Thou my life, Lord, In deep submission I pray, My all to Thee dedicating, Accept my offering today.
Seeking to mirror Thy glory, Living to answer Thy call, Each faithful vow now renewing, Gladly I yield Thee my all.
Time, health and talents presenting, All that I have shall be Thine; Heart, mind and will consecrating, No longer shall they be mine.
O for a heart of compassion, Moved at the impulse of love, Lost ones to bring to Thy footstool, Thy gracious riches to prove!
Brindley Boon (1914–2009)
O Jesus, I Have Promised
O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end, Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my friend. I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my guide.
O let me feel Thee near me; The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear. My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer And shield my soul from sin.
O let me hear Thee speaking In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will. O speak to reassure me, To chasten or control; O speak to make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul.
O Jesus, Thou hast promised To all who follow Thee, That where Thou art in Glory There shall Thy servant be; And, Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, My Master and my friend.
John Ernest Bode (1816–1874)
Take My Life and Let It Be
Take my life and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands and let them move At the impulse of Thy love; Take my feet and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee.
Take my voice and let me sing Always, only for my king; Take my lips and let them be Filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold; Take my intellect and use Every power as Thou shalt choose.
Take my will and make it Thine, It shall be no longer mine; Take my heart, it is Thine own, It shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love; my Lord, I pour At Thy feet its treasure store; Take myself and I will be Ever, only, all for Thee.

I’ll Stand for Christ
In the Army of Jesus we’ve taken our stand To fight ‘gainst the forces of sin, To the rescue we go, Satan’s power to o’erthrow, And his captives to Jesus we’ll win.
I’ll stand for Christ, for Christ alone Amid the tempest and the storm. Where Jesus leads I’ll follow on; I’ll stand, I’ll stand for Christ alone.
We go forth not to fight ‘Gainst the sinner, but sin; The lost and the outcast we love; And the claims of our king we Before them will bring As we urge them His mercy to prove.
Jesus pitied our case, And He died for our race, To save a lost world He was slain; But He rose and now lives, And His pardon He gives Unto all who will call on His name.
Though our trials be great And God’s enemies strong, To battle undaunted we go, For our warfare’s the Lord’s And to Him we belong, In His strength we shall conquer the foe.

Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, Hail Thee as the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the clouds of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.
All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and Heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise; Field and forest, vale and mountain, Blossoming meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in Thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest. Thou the Father, Christ our brother, All who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine.
Mortals, join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began; Father-love is reigning o’er us, Brother-love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife; Joyful music lifts us sunward In the triumph song of life.
Henry van Dyke (1852–1933)
Great is Thy Faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not; As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
I just wanna speak the name of Jesus Over every heart and every mind ‘Cause I know there is peace within Your presence
I speak Jesus
I just wanna speak the name of Jesus ‘Til every dark addiction starts to break Declaring there is hope and there is freedom I speak Jesus
‘Cause Your name is power Your name is healing Your name is life
Break every stronghold
Shine through the shadows
Burn like a fire
I just wanna speak the name of Jesus Over fear and all anxiety
To every soul held captive by depression I speak Jesus
’Cause Your name is power Your name is healing Your name is life
Break every stronghold
Shine through the shadows
Burn like the fire
Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name
Jesus

O Church, Arise
O Church, arise,
And put your armor on; Hear the call of Christ our Captain. For now the weak can say That they are strong
In the strength that God has given. With shield of faith and belt of truth, We’ll stand against the devil’s lies; An army bold, whose battle cry is love, Reaching out to those in darkness.
Our call to war, to love the captive soul
But to rage against the captor; And with the sword that makes
The wounded whole, We will fight with faith and valor. When faced with trials on every side
We know the outcome is secure, And Christ will have The prize for which He died, An inheritance of nations.
Come see the cross, Where love and mercy meet,
As the Son of God is stricken; Then see His foes
Lie crushed beneath His feet, For the Conqueror has risen! And as the stone is rolled away, And Christ emerges from the grave, This victory march continues till the day Every eye and heart shall see Him.
So Spirit, come, put strength in every stride, Give grace for every hurdle, That we may run With faith to win the prize
Of a servant good an faithful. As saints of old still line the way, Retelling triumphs of His grace, We hear their calls, and hunger for the day When with Christ we stand in Glory.
