2022-2023 IMPACT REPORT

This has been a year of change for our bureau and for the arts within the territory. With a record number of TAMC applications, Skeleton Army shows, and RePlay audience members, it is clear there is a hunger for the arts within the Eastern Territory. Our small team here at THQ has done big things this last program year, but I hope it is clear from the list of acknowledgments that we could not have done it without the support of the hundreds of volunteers, employees, and officers who give their time and energy so generously. It is an honor to be invited into your sacred spaces; where corps, community centers, camps, and adult rehabilitation centers are filled on a daily basis with people seeking truth, encountering Jesus, and working to make a change. Everywhere we go, we experience first-hand how the arts impacts people in a way they’ve never experienced before. I believe what makes this type of ministry so beautiful is the more you focus on being process-oriented, the greater the impact of the outcome. This truth is not limited to our ministry teams but also those they interact with - changing lives, growing together, and becoming a family who prays and uplifts one another. Anyone who has been involved in our teams or events will tell you of the impact the ministry had on their own spiritual walk. I am so grateful to play a role in this dynamic and impactful ministry. “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Isaiah 64:8

Jules Youtube This year, Arts Ministries partnered with the Youth Department to produce 6 videos to accompany the National Junior Soldier Prep Curriculum. With the goal of kids teaching kids, Kathryn Higgins wrote and directed a colorful, interactive, and musical series highlighting each week’s teachings. The show is called Jules Youtube and it’s about a new Junior Soldier who is eager to share her knowledge with the younger generation by creating her own Youtube channel. Things don’t always go as planned, but her confidence and creativity always brings the message to life! Keep an eye out for the release of this series from USA East Youth in 2024-2025.

ABOUT EVERGREEN Produced by the Arts Ministries Bureau, Evergreen is a compilation of series designed for specific age groups, each with a unique biblical and arts focus. Developed to equip and empower officers/volunteers to produce quality arts programming at their corps, Evergreen instructors require no special training and minimal preparation time. Lessons range from 45min-1hr each and are free to use throughout the territory. Arts Ministries hopes that Evergreen will create a positive crossover between corps Sunday attendance and after-school programs, and prepare young artists for divisional dance/drama teams, Star Search and beyond! With a new series added every year, Evergreen will grow and branch out to reflect the needs and interests of budding creatives throughout the territory. The Starter Pack on our website contains everything you may need to get an Evergreen class started at your Corps! Complete with attendance sheets and progress reports for every age group.

W H AT ' S N E XT ? The territory has just begun using Volume 1 of the Evergreen series for the 2023-2024 program year. We are currently receiving feedback from the field and are gathering ideas and suggestions to begin development on Volume 2! The next volume is expected to be completed by January of 2024, and will be released to the public by Commissioning Weekend of 2024.

Bounce! Each year, Arts Ministries partners with the Territorial Youth Department to develop and distribute a new Jesus Theatre. With this partnership, two events are held annually. The first event takes place in March and is the Jesus Theater Pre-Cast where a new production is developed, and supporting materials are produced. Second, in May, we support the Territorial Youth Department as they host an Eastern Territory Jesus Theatre Workshop, which is designed for directors who will roll out Jesus Theater with their own cast. This ministry has seen 4,854 commitments made to the Lord this year. This year’s Jesus Theatre production was titled, “Bounce!” It utilizes the imagery of God the Father with a fun bright whistle (i.e. breath) who distributes big bouncy balls to people, representing their lives. The enemy is portrayed with an arrow for piercing those balls, causing deflation. Using this imagery, The Gospel is shared through basic movement, silent acting, and narration.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

I was able to teach Jesus Theatre as the drama stream at Equip QLD (a state-wide youth camp). I had 14 young people in the stream and boy did God move! I have taught drama in many spaces over the years but I have never seen God move in such a powerful way in a stream. Shushannah Anderson Worship Arts Coordinator, NSW/ACT Australia Territory

W H AT ' S N E XT ? Great things are ahead for the Jesus Theatre Ministry! We’re excited to report there is growing international interest in Jesus Theatre! A delegate from the Australia territory brought the resource back and performed Bounce! all summer. We’re also excited to share that our new Dance Ministries Specialist, Natalia Cruz, has a heart for writing and conceiving new ideas for Jesus Theatre, as well as a heart for discipling and training our leaders! We are so blessed by her passion! She will be attending a Writing for Jesus Theatre workshop in Atlanta, GA in November of 2023 to learn more about designing pieces to bring people closer to Jesus. Upon her return, she will begin planning our next Jesus Theatre Pre-Cast event.

THE ARTS MINISTRIES BUREAU 2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT

We continued our partnership with the incredible HandsOn ministry this year and sent our team to the beautiful country of Costa Rica, the steps of the Centennial Memorial Temple on 14th Street in New York City, the OOB Pier Festival, and TAM Conservatory before closing out their eventful and rewarding summer! They performed an original production titled You are Loved which was narrated in both English and Spanish. You are Loved is a movement piece featuring popular music with a single message - You Are Loved. This creative work brought to life stories in the Bible that reflect the different types of love we seek, ending with the greatest love of all, agape love, the fatherly love of God for humans. This work was conceptualized, written, directed and choreographed by Olivia Renkel (NJ Special Events and Creative Arts Director).

I remember very vividly, it was my first summer on CAST, on the first day, I walked into a room full of people that I didn’t know, and they all loved the arts just as much as I did but they also had a passion for using the arts as a vessel for sharing the love of Christ. This completely shifted my perspective. It gave my passion a new purpose, a new vision. It made me realize that this thing that I loved didn’t just have to be a thing that I loved. It could be more than that. It was my ministry. Olivia Renkel

My experience with Hands On/CAST for the second year in a row has truly been a blessing to me. I have come to find a deep appreciation for the arts and how it can have profound impacts on a person’s testimony. Having the opportunity to bring our CAST piece, “You are Loved” to the people of Costa Rica was an absolute blessing. Watching them be moved by the Holy Spirit as we performed our piece helped us understand the importance of what we were doing. It also helped me understand that God’s calling for my life is to keep using the arts to serve and minister for His kingdom. Lydmarie Rivera Antonetti

The experience reminded me that music outreach is truly a part of my calling. I didn’t realize that I really needed it, but I did. The amount of folks that stayed for prayer afterwards was powerful and I was blessed as well to be a part of the awesome ministry that happened on the pier!

At the closing, the MC gave the invitation to receive salvation, which to some people could also mean re-dedicating your life to Christ. As he spoke, a father pulled his wife and daughter into his chest. The 3 locked arms and stood together. In that moment it was as if all 3 were making tha re-commitment. Perhaps to the Lord and to each other. When the music stopped and when the MC stopped speaking, the man could have led his family away but he didn’t; he continued to embrace them. I believe the Spirit of God embraced the whole family that evening. Prayer Team Member

TA M C

Inspired by the ancient Japanese art form kintsugi, the theme of the week this year was REPAIR from Ephesians 4:25-32. Built around the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger and luminous piece of art. This is a wonderful metaphor for how God takes our brokenness and uses it for good. Each day our students and staff reflected on Paul’s words about the heart of relationship repair. They embarked on a challenging journey to develop wisdom in their relationships. Our delegates and staff also enjoyed a few nights of fun, including a night in New York City watching a live Broadway show!

The TAM Conservatory Finale was an incredible result of the collaboration between the USA East Communications team and Arts Ministries, with a hybrid of pre-recorded interviews, documentaries, and a live show. Centering on the theme of REPAIR, 14 major tracks were showcased, with 2 of the tracks supporting the production behind the scenes. Scan the QR code below to access the full TAMC23 Finale video!

WELLNESS We partnered with the Spiritual Life Development Department again with the goal of creating a health and spiritual wellness focus for all of our TAMC delegates and staff. We found there was a deep desire to feel mentally and spiritually well, so we set out to create calm and sacred spaces to meet Jesus, and the Holy Spirit did not disappoint! Each day our participants were given the opportunity to engage in a variety of different spiritual disciplines in the morning such as meditation, yogafaith, breath prayer, mindfuless, and prayer walks. Each were introspective and restorative in nature, and gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on their personal relationship with Christ and with others. They were also given the opportunity to meet with our Spiritual Direction Director, Joanna Polarek from the SLD Department, for reflective time. In each session, she gave them space to be vulnerable and honest with their feelings, and then explore how God is working and communicating in their lives. before Evexia began only

It’s not just about dancing, but the spirit of God that overwhelms my body as I worship. God has blessed me with meaningful connections, service opportunities, and a safe space I call home. MOVE is not just a cool name or dance group, but a faith filled community of Godfearing people who have the passion to minister through dance, just like me! Nya Speller

W H AT ' S N E XT ? As MOVE enters a new chapter, with a new director and some new members, the goal for next year continues to be for our dancers to explore ways to compliment worship settings through movement and improv dance. Our main focus is to creatively share the message of the Gospel in a way that people can relate and connect with. MOVE Dance Company is eager to serve in whatever way they can at any event they attend!
