Others is the Salvation Army’s global social enterprise, using fair trade as a tool for job creation, empowerment and poverty alleviation.

The main goal of OTHERS is creating employment. The core of the concept is that each product that you buy contributes to the creation of fairly compensated work for people who would otherwise have limited opportunities. Production units are in many cases linked with The Salvation Army’s community development programs, where producers receive necessary counselling and support.

In this catalog we wish to present a selection of our products and some snapshots from our production. For a comprehensive list of products and prices, please see our distributor’s catalog at the end of this catalog.

MEET B E LTA — ON E O F O U R A RT I SA N S My name is Belta. I am married and blessed with four children. I have been a member of Others for more than 5 years, making paper bead products which are sold all over the country and overseas. The group has been so beneficial as far as strengthening our faith and up-lifting out living standards. It has enabled me to take care of my family through the money that I earn. I am so grateful because my firstborn is now planning to join the university — the first in our family to achieve this level of education. May God bless the work of our hands.

OUR PRODUCTION

OT H E R S I N BA N G LA DE S H Others began as a local initiative for poverty alleviation in Bangladesh in 1997, and Bangladesh remains our largest producer country, currently involving around 760 producers (both women and men).

Others Bangladesh produces a wide range of hand-loomed products, embroidered products, jute products, wooden products, natural fibre and leaf products, and knitted items. Production groups include women’s groups in and around the capital city Dhaka and in a number of villages in Central and Western parts of the country, as well as a handloom unit, carpentry unit and sewing unit in the city of Jashore. Some producers are recruited through specific community development projects run by The Salvation Army, such as The Salvation Army’s rehabilitation center in Old Dhaka which provides holistic care and training for women who have been victims of trafficking or exploitation.

The Others operation is followed up by The Salvation Army’s local team in Bangladesh, as well as partners from the Others Global network coordinated by The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters.

OT H E R S I N K EN YA Others’ first contacts with Kenya were in 1999, with formal connections to some producer groups starting from 2004. Others currently works with nine different production groups in Kenya, located in both urban and rural areas. Products build on locally available raw materials and artisan’s skills, and include bead/wire products, items made from sisal and leaf, as well as items made from recycled materials such as plastic and paper. Most producers are also linked with savings- and loans groups overseen by The Salvation Army locally.

In 2020 the partnership with Kenya was expanded to also include small-scale coffee farmers in the area of Matungulu. The first coffee was launched in Norway Christmas 2020, and the goal is to build a long-term partnership to help raise the standard of living for the Matungulu farmers.

Each wooden bowl is carefully hand carved from locally grown Gamari wood in our workshop in Jashore, Bangladesh.

The bowls are sold un-treated, but can be treated with a light coating of oil if desired.

All of Others’ wooden products are hand-crafted by skilled carpenters at our own workshop in the city of Jashore, Bangladesh. The wood that we use is sourced locally from sustainable sources. We primarily use gamari wood and rain tree wood, which is typically grown in yards and by road-sides, and sold when a family needs an extra source of income.

At our own workshop in Jashore, Bangladesh, we weave high quality textiles on traditional looms. Our skilled artisans weave all our tea towels and most of our aprons by hand, without mechanical assistance.

These beautiful baskets come in three sizes and are hand-woven by our groups in Kenya. The baskets are made form the local sisal plants which can be found everywhere. Our producers harvest the sisal, extract the fibers, dry they, dye them, spin threads and weave the baskets.

Many of our products incorporate embroidery detail, and this skill employs a large number of Others artisans in Bangladesh. This draws on a long tradition of embroidery, that is passed down from generation to generation.

Our artisans are involved in all steps of the production of every product — from sourcing raw materials, to cutting, sewing, finishing and packaging.

WE BELIEVE THAT ALL PEOPLE HAVE EQUAL DIGNITY, and that everyone shares the same desire to provide for themselves and their family. However, far too many lack the opportunity to find a job, or are forced to work under poor working conditions.

By creating flexible jobs with fair wages and access to international markets, we wish to do our part in giving more people access to decent employment. A particular priority is to ensure that women are given access to paid employment and the opportunity to earn their own income.

Our producers are primarily recruited through The Salvation Army’s local programs. Others has active production groups in Bangladesh and Kenya. Others partners with over 800 artisans. All products are handmade.

The materials for Others products are locally and sustainably sourced. We strive to combine the best of local hand-craft skills and traditions in our products.
