President's Message Charity Begins at Home “Charity begins at home” is an old proverb expressing the imperative nature of caring for family before others. Home, my dental family, is the Sacramento District Dental Society (SDDS). The heart of our home and family is the Sacramento District Dental Foundation (SDDF).

Our Foundation was originally established in 1969 and has grown tremendously throughout the years because of our “family.” It was initially established to help provide dental services to those who otherwise would not be able to afford it, focusing primarily on the most vulnerable of our population, the children. Look at us now! SDDF now encompasses Smiles for Kids Program, Smiles for Big Kids Program, Smiles for Kids Orthodontic Program, Crowns for Kids, Spirit of Giving, The Helen Hamilton Funded Orthodontic Grant Program, and Oral Health Education Outreach and Screenings. These programs serve the dental needs of the underserved in our community. I like to think we transcend the human experience of dental suffering.

Our “heart” (SDDF) is nourished by the generosity of our many dental volunteers and monetary donations to support the charitable programs. There is a German proverb that says “Charity sees the need, not the cause.” SDDF sees the need but is also trying to address the cause through the diligent and tireless work of our SDDS staff.

They are addressing dental suffering by finding dental homes, working with dental insurances (including GMC DentiCal and fee for service DentiCal), coordinating care and finances, dental health education and

partnering with other community programs needing dental guidance. No phone call goes unanswered. Just in case you didn’t hear, SDDF was honored on March 16, 2018 by the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce as the Non-Profit of the Year!

Consider your “heart” health this month, “adopt” a patient in need and/or donate a few dollars to SDDF (no donation is too small or too large). If we stand and work together “we can make a difference.” Live a life of significance. One final quote from Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Of course you are – that’s why you are receiving this issue of this magazine!

We have 1700 members of SDDS – 80.7% of the market share.

But are you a member of our Foundation? (It’s only $75).

Only 450 dentists are members – that’s only 25%.

We continue to hear members ask… “what’s the difference?” I hope you will read the pages in this issue and realize the difference between SDDS and our Foundation. We are separate – but we are also together. The members of the Dental Society make the Foundation what it is – it is the HEART of the Dental Society!

Granted, most of our work in the Foundation is done by our wonderful doctors doing pro-bono work, but we don’t want hard costs (lab, biopsies, etc) to be borne by the volunteer doctor. We organize the programs and constantly work with our partners to navigate those kids and adults in need.

We provide thousands of toothbrushes to the community for screenings and outreach.

We work with other organizations to help their clients. TREMENDOUS organizations that are doing such great work: Blue Heart Foundation, St. John’s Shelter, Women’s Empowerment, Weave an many more.

So, in the end… there is a difference. But we are also one, together.

From the Editor’s Desk Growth of the Foundation It is an honor to be the guest editor of this edition of the Nugget, which serves as the Annual Report of the Foundation. Our organization is strong and adapting to new challenges with vigor and fervor year.

The Foundation has grown and changed over the years and today has a different set of challenges from when it was started.

The Board of Directors is a group of experienced leaders and I lean on them heavily to ensure that we are moving in the best direction for the Foundation. As we look to the future, we need to ensure the sustainability of our organization and its programs. We also need to ensure that our

programs are pertinent and flexible enough to the changing needs of our community.

Thoughts on an article in last month’s issue

I would like to comment about the article in the recent Nugget regarding the anesthetic technique, the TuttleNumbNow or TNN,

by Gregory Tuttle, DDS. I have been practicing dentistry for almost 30 years. And I know we are always looking for techniques that will help to improve our clinical success. Some will help our patients have improved health or improve the longevity of our restorations. Others, unbeknownst to us, may have consequences that take years to show up.

Localized anesthesia using high pressure, such as the Ligajet or X-Tip, have been with us for many years. The newest of these, the TuttleNumbNow technique, introduced by Dr. Tuttle is another of these that promise a quick and safe alternative to unpredictable mandibular blocks.

I would like to suggest that high pressure anesthetic techniques may have a negative long term consequence...resorption.

When high pressure is applied to the bone or tissue surrounding a tooth, the tissue

blanches. This blanching is the stopping of blood flow to the area. The longer the blanching, the longer the tissue is in eschemic hypoxia. When the tissue is without oxygen too long, it dies. The dead tissue (particularly hard tissue, like dentin) may take years for the body to re-absorb, but when it does, it happens quickly and almost always results in tooth loss.

I am currently putting together several case studies on patients I inherited in 2008, on the relationship between the use of the Ligajet (and possibly other high pressure anesthesia techniques) and delayed resorption. The previous doctors consistently used the Ligajet for mandibular anesthesia and in the past 10 years, I have seen an unusually high rate of internal and external resorption, many resulting in multiple tooth loss, all mandibular teeth. Looking back through their charts, I find one consistent pattern. All teeth had the Ligajet used 10-15 years prior.

I am not saying do not use these techniques.

When we have a “hot” tooth, sometimes we need alternative ways to obtain profound

anesthesia, but approach their use with caution. Use them only when absolutely necessary and inform your patients of the possible long term consequences.

My Life Will

Never Be the Same

Ms. Smith has lived in the Sacramento area for many years.

She grew up on the central coast in San Luis Obispo. She currently lives with her best friend of 21 years and a spirited lab named Riley. She enjoys spending time with friends which she had previously not done due to her dental issues. Smiles for Big Kids has truly changed her life!

In 2012, I started to experience issues with my oral health. I had had a few cavities over the years but no major issues or expenses.

I brushed twice a day and saw my dentist twice a year. My teeth became very fragile and began to chip and break regularly.

Concerned, my dentist teamed up with my primary care doctor to help diagnose. The conclusion was that severe acid reflux (a side effect from gastric bypass) was eroding my teeth at a rapid pace.

During this time, I was laid off from a 15 year career, lost my benefits and was unable to afford COBR A. While looking for permanent employment, I worked long term contract positions, most of which did not offer benefits. I have consistently made too much income to qualify for State benefits (even while on Unemployment) but not enough to purchase any. Options are limited for single adults with no dependents.

While hiding my teeth from the world, I continued to search for assistance.

While hiding my teeth from the world, I continued to search for assistance. I reached out to churches, dental schools and cold called/emailed dental providers that volunteered their services in several different states. I even tried unsuccessfully to be a contestant on a reality show.

My research eventually led me to find California Care Force. I had been to a

venue like this once before but was turned away when the event reached capacity. I decided to create an email telling my story and began to send it out to literally every email I could find on the event website.

I received an email which referred me to several resources. I had already looked into most, but one suggestion that stood out was to contact my local Dental Society.

My life will never be the same.

I found the local office online and sent out another batch of messages. Within a few hours, I received an email from an incredible woman named Cathy from the Dental Society. She apologized for reaching out on a weekend and politely asked if she could contact me first thing on Monday. I couldn’t believe someone was apologizing to me for interrupting their weekend. Amazing!

I spoke to Cathy and her co-worker Sofia many times over the next few weeks. I was given “homework” in the form of researching several different suggestions, programs and ideas and reporting back with my findings.

The more I reached out, the more discouraged I became. But without fail, I received nothing but encouragement and motivation from both Cathy and Sofia.

Late one afternoon, I received a message to contact Cathy after work. Sofia answered and advised that they had found a provider in my area that could help me. I was elated to finally get some good news. But when she told me that the procedures would be covered for me by way of the Smiles for Big Kids charity, I began to cry. After our call concluded, I noticed that the Oral Surgeon

(Dr. Wes Hill) and Dentist (Dr. Bryan Judd) had already left voicemails to make appointments. I cried for a second time.

Within a week of the call with the Dental Society, I was at my first appointment with Dr. Judd to evaluate my case. He advised the best plan was for immediate dentures. A mold of my teeth was sent off to the lab and my appointment with the Oral Surgeon was set. The dentures were expedited with the lab and sent to Dr. Hill’s office. All of my teeth were pulled in one day and the immediate dentures were put into place. A series of appointments for fittings, etc. took place over the next few months as I healed.

I am most grateful that, through the entire experience, I never felt “less than.”

Why I Love Smiles for Kids!

I have a collection of mugs at home, one each from a Smiles for Kids day from as early as 2005 to 2018. He graduated first in class from University of Nebraska College of Dentistry 1986. In his free time Dr. Anderson is an avid Scouter, loves camping, hiking, and waterskiing.

Has climbed to the peaks of most of the county high points in California, including Mt. Whitney and Mt. Shasta, and has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, the high point of Africa.

Our office has been host to Smiles for Kids since before it was called that; I began practicing in Roseville in 1989, and I think we hosted our first Children’s Dental Day the next year. Since we have a larger office, with four partner doctors and some 30 staff, it was easy for us to open up our doors to see a large number of kids. We do not pressure our staff to participate, but often see most of them volunteer to help, along with Dr. Sydney Moore (pediatric dentist) and Dr. Nick Rotas (oral surgeon). Several of our staff have even taken to bringing in their family members to help out! Everyone pitches in to provide dental services for these kids.

And what wonderful kids these are! We have worked closely with school nurses from around our community to let them know we are happy to see any children with unmet dental needs. No one wants kids to suffer from neglected teeth. Many of these kids come from circumstances that do not allow them to have dental services any other way. They and their parents are most appreciative. Of course we try very hard to make their experience a positive, even fun one, with gift bags, balloons and hugs and laughter. We try to get as much dentistry done on the day of the Smiles for Kids program, but there are always a handful of kids who we choose to ‘adopt’ to finish their treatment later on.

This year we were able to see 38 kids on SFK day, providing over $26,000 of dental treatment. We had 8 doctors, and 24 additional volunteers at our site. Kids

ranged in age from 3 to 18. We did fillings, extractions, sealants, prophys, f luoride treatments, and ortho screenings. We started at 7:30am on Saturday, and wrapped up the event by 1pm. It was a whirlwind day, exhausting as usual, but immensely satisfying.

Here’s what I love about being involved with Smiles for Kids: • There are few programs as heartwarming as this one, which allows us to help children who are truly in need.

• I always come away from SFK feeling uplifted, having seen my co-workers and other volunteers come together to make our day a big success.

• I feel strongly that we, as a dental community, are greatly blessed to be in this profession; I see SFK as an opportunity to give back a little by helping kids in need.

And the icing on the cake: each year I get to add to my awesome mug collection! 

Smiles for Kids Program On March 16th at their annual Person of the Year Dinner (this year honoring Lina Fat), the Carmichael Chamber honored the SDDS Foundation as the nonprofit of the year! To say the least, we are so very proud of this wonderful recognition. Dr. Gabrielle Rasi, Chamber President, presented the award and a donation of $2000 to Dr. Viren Patel, Foundation President. The Chamber further recognized the efforts of the Foundation in the Smiles for Kids Program, one which Dr. Rasi has been an active participant and site host for many years (thanks Dr. Rasi!). It goes without saying that, through the generosity and recognition of organizations like the Chamber, our Foundation continues to grow and be a great partner in the community for the better oral health of our community. 

Truly a Partnership!

As a former pre-school teacher and front office manager for two Sacramento pediatric dental offices, Danielle found her passions of teaching and oral health combined in her current role. If I never hear the word “silos” again, I will break out in a clumsy, yet sincere happy dance. This word is like an earworm song that we don’t really like, but hear so frequently, that even the most verbose among us find it effortlessly rolling off their lips, like an overplayed Taylor Swift song. I have slipped up and used this word myself, after which I was filled with thoughts of Taylor dancing through my head. “Look what you made me do.”

I understand the purpose behind it. It’s meant to depict that organizations seem to “work in silos,” left scrambling to utilize collective oral health knowledge to help community members with these needs. The point is to talk about how to get rid of them.

But having the same “silo” talk won’t get the job done. These silos will only collapse under the power of genuine partnerships that work intertwined in trusting and compromising collaborations. I’m proud to say LIBERTY Dental Plan and SDDS have built this type of partnership. We’ve humbly agreed that progress will only come by working together, which starts with constructive action plans and then…follow through.

Two years ago, I was brought onto LIBERTY Dental Plan’s team to focus on teaching the Sacramento County community how important it is to go to the dentist on a regular basis. I get to help them learn how to easily access their dental home through the Geographic Managed Care (GMC) program and all the benefits that come with it. While I had oral health knowledge and

LIBERTY’s message, this role was new and I needed partners to help spread the word.

After working in two Sacramento County pediatric dental offices for almost a decade, I knew who Cathy Levering and SDDS was.

While SDDS is known for being the right hand man for their members, they are also known as being the Oprah for underserved kids with decay through Smiles For Kids Day. ‘YOU get free dental care! YOU get free dental care! YOU’RE ALL GETTING FREE DENTAL CARE!’ They make good things happen and working with them was a no-brainer.

...students are navigated to dental care after the screening through their GMC dental plan or to the community partner, Sacramento Covered.

LIBERTY and SDDS have worked together for many years on the Medi-Cal Dental Advisory Committee, working to better Sacramento County’s oral health outcomes.

Cathy is a terrific advocate for what’s working and what’s not. I’m proud of the company I work for because the LIBERTY team truly listens to the input of SDDS and all the local Sacramento community partners. This input from SDDS and other partners is taken to heart and our LIBERTY team works on actually going outside the box to make the GMC program more successful.

When LIBERTY partnered with the other two GMC plans, Health Net and Access Dental Plan to fund Early Smiles Sacramento, a dental screening and navigation program run by the Center for Oral Health in June 2016, we were excited to have a program to do dental screenings, fluoride varnish and navigation. This means the students are navigated to dental care after the screening through their GMC dental

plan or to the community partner, Sacramento Covered. This was a huge opportunity for follow through to routine dental care. But with new programs comes hesitance. In the past, there have been oral health programs that did not follow through and left a bad taste in people’s mouths (Pun intended). So, how does a solid, but new, program gain any trust?

They need a trusted partner, like SDDS. Cathy went out on a limb, bringing myself and Early Smiles Program Manager, Rachel Shafer, to all three of SDDS’s Smiles For Kids Nurses Meetings. In front of three full rooms of Sacramento County school nurses, Cathy stated three poignant things: 1) the GMC program had improved because of the dental plans, 2) She trusted the GMC plans and the Early Smiles program and 3) She hoped Smiles For Kids Day would treat less kids…because this meant they were getting into routine dental care with their dental home through the GMC program. This gave us trust with the schools and got Early Smiles off to a great start.

the nearest parking lot and got on the phone to my LIBERTY teammates. We were able to get our Member Services interpreter on the phone with the family and helped navigate them to a dental office that could see the child right away. Partnership at its best.

This experience can work anywhere, as long as partners are willing to trust and compromise for the common good of truly improving oral health outcomes. Once this happens, we will never have to hear or talk about working in silos again and we can clumsily happy dance together. 

As a good partner, SDDS and SDDF knows they can count on LIBERTY. This includes an occasion when a family walked into the SDDS office with a child in pain and crying, looking for help. They were new to the U.S., spoke very little English, but had their LIBERTY Dental ID card. When Cathy called me, I quickly exited the freeway, found

Blessings….

Over a Million Dollars! And Millions of Dollars in Return Since 2003, the SDDS Foundation has been blessed to have organizations and individuals who have generously supported the two major programs of the Foundation: Smiles for Kids and Smiles for Big Kids.

When the Foundation adopted the Smiles for Kids program as its flagship program, the opportunity to apply for community grants became a reality. And how lucky we have been to receive such generous grants!

In 2008, we began the Smiles for Big Kids program for adults and the elderly, specifically.

We have been successful applying for some largescale grants for this program as well. We continue to apply for grants to fund these programs but grants are becoming fewer and more difficult to be successful in achieving. To date, we have received $883,000 in grants alone and we are so very thankful!

That said, contributions, both individually and corporately, have been even more important to our Foundation’s programs. Whether it’s a memorial contribution to the Foundation in general, or to a specific program, these contributions are a God-send to the work that we do. A contribution in honor of someone in particular (thank you Dr. Jeff Vernon!) is also a way to contribute to the Foundation.

We are blessed to receive donations and contributions to both these programs as well.

To date, we have received at total of $129,500 in contributions alone. And specifically, these major directed contributions over the years: In honor of Dr. Jeff Vernon and his dedication to our Foundation (2018): $14,000 In memory of Dr. Gordon Harris for Smiles for Kids (ongoing): $22,500

In memory of Dr. Bob Gillis for Smiles for Big Kids (2015): $9,800 In honor of Miles for Smiles (Drs. Runquist & Rollofson 2007 CIF Marathon): $21,700 So, in summary… grants and contributions are essential to the programs of our Foundation.

It helps us pay for the hard costs (lab costs, biopsies, and program operations). But WITHOUT A DOUBT, these programs wouldn’t be even possible without the donation of the treatment made by our member doctors.

Our First

Smiles for Kids Day! Our Saturday morning began with a 7:30 morning huddle. Our team wore shirts that said “Floss Like A Boss” and “Plaque is Wack.” Our entire team worked hard to be sure we were fully prepared.

We had breakfast items ready for the volunteers, organized all of our assigned

patient information and entered them into Dentrix and we had our Spanishspeaking RDA ready for translating.

Much to our relief, at 8am on the dot, the patients started trickling in. We were amazed at how well-behaved the children were! It was impressive to watch a team

of skilled professionals who had never met one another, let alone worked together, combine their efforts to seamlessly provide comprehensive dental care for the community. Our team consisted of us, two pediatric dentists, a general dentist, an RDH, an RDA EF, several pedo RDAs and an orthodontic team performing consultations. Our mascot, Tabitha The Tooth, even made a quick appearance to greet the patients! Our friend Beth from SDDS stopped by to say hello, make sure things were running smoothly and help us capture the day with a few photos. All the while, the patients continued to arrive.

By 11:30am we were really busy and the teamwork continued to shine through! The energy was high and enjoyable.

Our favorite part of the day was collaborating with the other team members and picking up little tid bits that we can use for years to come. It was wonderful to be able to work with our old classmates from dental school. Hosting Smiles for Kids was a little bit of hard work, but a ton of fun.

We ended up finishing with our patients by 2pm. We are beyond grateful to our entire team, the SDDS and Foundation for organizing such a fabulous event and for the people of our community who helped make the day a huge success! 

Smiles for BIG Kids® (SFBK) began in 2009 and, recognizing that often the parents’ dental health needs are equally as urgent as their children’s, SFBK focused on the needs of parents of SFK patients and the elderly. Since then, the program has expanded to address the dental needs of underserved adults (including parents of SFK patients). The Foundation has partnered with several local community organizations to identify eligible patients and, each year, member dentists provide much needed care to these individuals in the form of dentures, restorative treatment and specialty treatment. Still in its early stages of development, this project will hopefully be as successful as SFK someday!

The Heart of Our Society Looking Back at the SDDS Foundation in 2017 Thank you for the privilege of being the Foundation President for 2017. The SDDF is a 501c(3), not for profit corporation, whose mission is to promote the oral and general health of the public by serving as the charitable arm of the SDDS. Our Core Values are Benevolence, Accountability and Service.

It is my pleasure to summarize for you what we achieved last year. In compiling this report I have found that the nature of our Foundation is changing. We historically have focused on providing care to those in need regardless of their coverage status within the social welfare system. With the passage of the ACA, all children have some form of dental coverage and as such we have morphed into a navigation system to ensure that those that need care are directed to those being paid to take care of them. This change has shown up as fewer children needing services within our flagship project Smiles for Kids. This is a great thing. In February we saw fewer kids than ever that needed care. Our effort in teaming with the dental plans has resulted in greater oral health for the children in our community. Congratulations to all involved.

Another change that was made on Smiles for Kids day affected the Ortho program. We were able to have an orthodontist present at each site, except one, and this resulted in a more direct route for those needing care. A large number of children were adopted that very same day.

I do have to report some bad news to you.

I am sad to inform you that we are the recipients of fewer grants each year. This is a sign of the economic times and the shift in the types of philanthropy large organizations

are participating in. However, we did receive smaller grants through contacts within our Foundation members and I encourage all of you to put our name forward to any organizations with which you may be affiliated. A great example of this was an event I was privileged to attend at the Carmichael chamber of commerce. Dr. Gabrielle Rasi being the connection, nominated SDDF and we were given the award of Non-Profit of the Year. At the presentation ceremony, I was able to inform a new and diverse group of our efforts and the incredible success of our programs. In addition, a portion of the proceeds of that event were donated to our Foundation.

Our effort in teaming with the dental plans has resulted in greater oral health for the children in our community.

Despite the lack of grants, our Foundation continues to grow. I am proud to inform you that we reached the landmark $2M mark in assets during 2017. This is a testament to the strength of our members’ convictions. These funds will ensure that our programs will continue into the future.

The landscape of need continues to change and our Foundation will continue to be flexible and adapt to the changes as they arise. We will continue to partner with other organizations to ensure that those in need are served. Thanks to all of our members, both SDDS and SDDF, for all that you give. 

Crowns for Kids

Continues to Support Our SFK Project!

With the thanks all going to our member dentists who participate as well as the Star Group (our awesome partner refining company!) and our rep, Jim Ryan, we are proud to say that 2017 was another GREAT year for crown donations!

Our goal is to continue this program and continue to strive to get more dentists to participate each year. Currently only 120 dentists participate… and it can be so much more!

What can you do? Just Call us and we’ll get you a jar to start saving crowns that your patients and donate to help our kids in the community.

Our goal for 2018? We hope to get 25 new doctors to participate? Will you?? Again, just call us? How easy is it? Just explain to your patients that their donated crown helps with our project SMILES FOR KIDS – it’s a nobrainer!

In 2005, the Foundation partnered with Star Refining and began Crowns for Kids® (CFK) to benefit Smiles for Kids. In this program, member dentists collect scrap metal from their patients’ dental treatment in CFK jars, the jars are collected and sent to the metal refinery (Star Group), and the refinery sends a check to the Foundation each month.

Foundation of the Sacramento District Dental Society Changing Lives

A couple of years ago we started treating a young woman with significant dental problems. In the May 2017 issue of the Nugget, “Veronica’s Story” was published, recanting the challenges she faced because of a severely compromised dentition. It took a team, consisting of Dr. Peter Worth, myself

Respectfully submitted by Paul P. Binon, DDS, MSD, FAO and the laboratory support from KP28 in Sacramento to get the job done. All treatment was completed under the auspices of the SDDS Foundation, the Smiles for Kids and Smiles for Big Kids program. Since treatment has now been completed, Veronica is in our hygiene maintenance program. She now has a lips apart, happy smile that radiates confidence. Dentistry is not the easiest profession with its many challenges. So if you want to experience the joy that you can bring into someone’s life with a smile or the ability to eat without pain, consider adopting a patient in need. There is a sense of real satisfaction in doing something like that. If you have not experienced that feeling, I suggest you contact SDDS and find that special patient that you can volunteer to help. I want to thank the Foundation membership for giving us the opportunity to make a difference. 

Our children are our future! How we live, love and give is very important to me and that is why I love being a part of SDDS Smile for Kids. I love seeing a smile on a child’s face, a sheepish thank you, a look of awe and wonder when you, the doctor, listen to them. These are the moments I cherish most!!

A Note From a Mom I am so grateful every day for such a wonderful blessing. Braces have given my daughter Viviana so much confidence.

There is nothing more beautiful in the world than a child’s smile. To see her happy and confident makes so me so happy. I cannot express in words what this means to us.

Our largest and most far-reaching project, Smiles for Kids® (SFK) (originally founded in 1991 by Dr. Gerard Ortner and Dr. Don Rollofson) was adopted and expanded by the Foundation in 2003. It partners member dentists with local schools to screen and provide dental education to thousands of children each year. From the screenings, underinsured and underserved children are treated by member dentists and their staffs on SFK Day each February. More than half of those children are then “adopted” for further pro bono treatment – including specialty and orthodontic treatment. Each year, a million dollars in pro bono treatment is provided to children in the five county SDDS area. Smiles for Kids is making great strides toward reversing the disheartening statistics that plague the children of our community.

From Elk Grove to Truckee, young patients were cared for on Smiles for Kids Day. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit a few of these offices on that morning... and deliver “goodies.”

How heartwarming for me to see not only the volunteer dentists, but also their assistants, hygienists and front desk staff all helping provide the care. More than one volunteer dentist was at each office that I visited. All were welcoming and smiling and giving freely of their time on Saturday.

We were not able to host SFK day in our office at the scheduled time in February because of staffing issue.

However, since we have hosted SFK day for last 8 years we were bummed that we won’t be able to do it this year.

However, we hosted it on March 24.

We knew we could manage getting the schedule full but liability wise it was a big relief to host it under SDDF flag. Thank you SDDF! We were able to treat 14 kids and do over $6000 in donated care. The patients were very grateful and I think we are setting a good example for our kids and grandkids of giving back. I hope they can continue the tradition.

Spirit of Giving Being a general dentist, I provide care and interact with a great number of individuals.

On a regular basis, I find that we are the recipients of gifts. Often, it seems, I am awash with food and drink items so generously given to us by our referral offices, patients and friends. It occurred to me that what we really enjoy is the recognition, far more than the actual items. I also realized that this is an opportunity to do something more. What

if, in lieu of gifts to my office, I received a notice of a donation to my favorite charity?

(Mine happens to be our Foundation!) This would result in me getting the thanks that was intended, but in addition there would be others that would also benefit.

I am going to suggest instead of sending gifts of chocolates, wine and food baskets, restaurant cards, iTunes cards and a myriad

of other gifts, that we instead choose to give those that we wish recognition via a donation and provide for those in greater need. As a recipient, I am certainly going to suggest a donation instead of a fleeting thank you gift. The SDDF is near and dear to all of our hearts and I cannot think of a better way to say thank you to a dentist than a gift to the Foundation in their name. 

MATTHEW SANDERS, DDS I think that volunteering is an important part of strengthening our communities and participating in the Smiles for Kids ortho program has been a great way for me to give back. What has been truly worthwhile as an orthodontist is to use my skills to provide pro-bono orthodontic care for children from families in need who would not receive this care otherwise.

Mariana and Cristina are sisters getting treatment at the same time so this will be a memorable and great bonding experience for them. We can’t wait to see their final results.

Reprinted with permission from TDIC Risk Management Staff Not many will debate the practicality of mobile phones. And since the ubiquitous gadgets are not likely to go away, it’s essential to have a policy regarding smartphone and cellphone use on the job.

It’s equally important to document the policy in writing and make sure your team understands it.

Risk management analysts say many dental practice owners have not addressed smartphone use in a formal manner, but need to.

Mobile phone use during work hours can give patients the impression their dental care is not a priority, and phone use creates distractions that can increase liability. Inaccurate documentation and lack of attention to detail can occur when concentration is divided between work and mobile devices.

If employees are making personal calls, checking email, texting or using smartphone applications at work, the activities could be the result of a lack of policy or an unclear policy. If you have a mobile phone policy, review it for clarity and missing information. If you don’t have a mobile phone policy, now is a good time to draft and implement one.

The Dentists Insurance Company recommends banning cellphone and smartphone use while on duty, including sending or receiving personal calls, emails and text messages or using smartphone applications. Further, TDIC recommends establishing a no-text policy, prohibiting staff from texting the dentist for any reason.

This helps prevent issues such as sending a

text instead of calling in sick for work. If the employee is texting about a patient, banning such communication also removes any potential violation of that patient’s privacy.

According to Diana Ratcliff, an attorney in Southern California who specializes in employment labor law, one of the most important things an employer can do is make sure employees are fully aware of office policies and expectations on the job.

Ratcliff suggested that practice owners “communicate their expectations, have policy in writing and follow through with counseling if expectations are not met.”

Talk to employees in a staff meeting about smartphone use and texting, and explain the rationale behind the policy, including liability issues that can occur from being distracted at work. Include the policies in your employee manual.

TDIC recommends the following regarding mobile phone policy, texting and employee communications:

• Be clear that employees who need to use their personal phones may do so only during breaks or meal periods.

• Consider establishing a no-text policy, prohibiting staff from texting the dentist or office manager for any reason.

• Address attendance and specify that if employees are unable to report to work on time, they must notify the dentist or delegated staff by phone.

• Train employees on cellphone policy in a staff meeting.

• Provide employees a copy of the policy.

• Document cellphone, texting and attendance policies in your employee manual.

Get Engaged with SDDS! Every year the incoming SDDS leadership reviews the overall function of our dental Society. Strengths, weaknesses and areas of concern are explored and assignments of committees or task forces are made to address these issues. Membership and our market share is always at the top of the list.

SDDS has enjoyed a very impressive market share (percentage of licensed dentists that practice within our district that are paid members of our Society). We can be proud of our Society as it consistently has one of the highest market shares in the state.

Although we are proud of this fact, we know we can’t rest on our laurels. A strategic planning session in September resulted in an update of our core values. One core value was “staying relevant.” One way to measure if we are meeting this core value is to quantify how much our members utilize the benefits of membership. How “engaged” are our members? From this concern came the creation of the Member Engagement Task Force.

Meticulous records are kept by the SDDS staff of any contact that our members have with SDDS through a two year cycle. A contact is attending a class, event or making a phone call to the Society. This is one of the ways we gauge if we are staying relevant. Are our members utilizing the services that they pay for in with their membership dues? Our most recent “look back” period revealed that 90% of our membership made some type of contact or attended something, in the last two years. That’s “A” work, but we can’t help but worry about the other 10%. Is there something more we could be doing to keep our members engaged? Is there something we aren’t offering that our members would value?

SDDS VENDOR MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT IS A WIN-WIN RELATIONSHIP! SDDS started the Vendor Member program in 2002 to provide resources for our members. No, Vendor Members are not exclusive, and we definitely have some competitive companies who are Vendor Members. But our goal is to give SDDS members resources that would best serve their needs. We suggest that members reach out to our Vendor Members and see what is a best “fit” for their practice and lifestyle.

We currently have 40 Vendor Members. They pay $3,900 per year; that includes a booth at Midwinter, three tables at General Meetings, advertising in The Nugget, and much more. Our goal is to provide Vendor Members with the opportunity to connect with and serve our members. We realize that you have a choice for vendors and services; we only hope that you give our Vendor Members first consideration.

The Vendor Members program and the income SDDS receives from this program helps to keep your dues low. It is a wonderful source of non-dues revenue and allows us to provide yet another member benefit. Additionally, we reach out to our Vendor Members for articles for The Nugget (nonadvertising!).
