แรงงาน คําประสมสองพยางคสั้น ๆ ที่หลายคนคงเคยไดยินจนคุนหู แตอาจตีความแตกตางกันไปตามประสบการณสวนบุคคล แมเราจะประสบ พบเจอกับแรงงานหลากหลายรูปแบบในชีวิตประจําวัน แตใชวาทุกคนจะเขาใจความหมายและมองผูอื่นในสถานะผูใชแรงงานเทากัน และบอย ครั้ง ผูใชแรงงานอาจเผลอลืมไปวาตนก็เปนแรงงานอีกคนหนึ่งเชนเดียวกัน ในโลกทุนนิยมที่มีเงินเปนฟนเฟองสําคัญในการขับเคลื่อนหลายชีวิตไปขางหนา สถานะของคนทํางานคอย ๆ ถูกขีดแบงใหตางกันทีละเล็ก ละนอย ไมวาจะเปนฐานเงินเดือนที่แตกตางกัน ที่สงผลไปถึงลําดับขั้นในการเสียภาษี ตลอดจนชีวิตความเปนอยูที่แตกตางกันระหวางผูบริหาร พนักงานประจํา ฟรีแลนซ ไปจนถึงลูกจางรายวัน รายสัปดาห และในกลุมแรงงานที่วามานั้น ยังมีองคประกอบอื่น ๆ ที่ขีดเสนแบงความแตกตาง ซํ้าแลวซํ้าเลา จนเสนนั้นคอย ๆ ชัดขึ้น และแบงแยกใหคนทํางานเหลานั้นแตกตางกันมากขึ้นกวาเดิม จนบางทีอาจขาดความเขาใจและเห็นอก เห็นใจซึ่งกันและกัน ปฏิเสธไมไดวา สื่อกระแสหลักก็เปนอีกกลไกสําคัญในการสรางการรับรูความหมายของคนหมูมากในสังคม ภาพของแรงงานในสื่อมักถูกฉายดวย ภาพจําเดิม ๆ โดยจํากัดความเปนแรงงานไวกับชนชั้นรากหญา และแรงงานเพศชาย ที่มักใชแรงกายแบกหามเปนหลัก เมื่อภาพแทนในสื่อไมได ใหความสําคัญกับการนําเสนอภาพแรงงานที่หลากหลาย ความเขาใจของคนสวนมากจึงจํากัดอยูแคที่แรงงานดังกลาว ทั้งที่จริงแลว การมีบทบาท ในทางใดทางหนึ่งที่ตองอาศัยแรงกาย แรงใจของบุคคลหนึ่ง แมจะไมไดมีผลตอบแทนเปนเม็ดเงิน แตถาผลของการกระทําเหลานั้นสงผลตอสังคม ไมวาจะทางตรงหรือทางออม ก็หมายความวาแรงงานนั้นเปนฟนเฟองในการขับเคลื่อนสังคมไดเชนกัน

ดวยเหตุนี้ นิทรรศการ “Crossing the Lines: แรงงานขามเสน” ตองการตอกยํ้าคําพูดที่วา ทุกคนเปนแรงงาน แนนอนวาเราไมไดกําลังเหมา รวมวาแรงงานทุกคนเหมือนกันและสามารถทดแทนกันได แตเราเชื่อวาผูใชแรงงานทุกคนตองเคยรูสึกถึงความอยุติธรรม ความเหนื่อยลา ทอแท ที่เปนประสบการณรวมอันเกิดจากการถูกระบบและนายจางขูดรีดไมตางกัน ในนิทรรศการนี้ คําวาแรงงานจะถูกตีความใหมผานคุณคาที่ไมได จํากัดอยูที่มูลคาทางเศรษฐกิจ ในทางกลับกัน แรงงานจะถูกนําเสนอผานเรื่องราว คําบอกเลา ประสบการณชีวิต ที่อาจจะไมปรากฏในสื่อกระแส หลักตลอดจนหนาประวัตศิ าสตร งานศิลปะโดยศิลปนไทยรวมสมัยเพศหญิงและ LGBTQ+ จะทําหนาทีข่ บั เคลือ่ นสังคมดวยการพาเราไปตัง้ คําถาม ในระหวางการสํารวจเรื่องราวของแรงงานที่สังคมไมคุนชินอันเกิดจากการบกพรองในการนําเสนอของสื่อ นิทรรศการ “Crossing the Lines: แรงงานขามเสน” เนนยํ้าไปที่การสํารวจเสนแบงที่เปนประเด็นในการแบงแยก ‘หมวดหมู’ อยาง ‘เพศ’ และการแบงแยก ‘ระดับ’ อยาง ‘ชนชั้น’ เปนหลัก อยางไรก็ตาม เกณฑที่ใชในการแบงแยกผลงานของศิลปนที่ถูกนําเสนอจะแบงผานเสนในเชิง กายภาพและเสนในเชิงนามธรรม โดยหมวดหมูแรกหรือเสนในเชิงภายภาพ จะประกอบไปดวยผลงานของจุรีพร เพชรกิ่ง ชุด จีนนอกนา; สถานะ ของคนพลัดถิ่น (2022; 2020) ที่สํารวจเรื่องราวของชาวจีนที่หลั่งไหลเขามาหาเงินจุนเจือปากทองในสยาม งานสื่อผสมของสมัคร กอเซ็ม ชุด Animal Man Show (2022); Aliens in Adam‘s Apple (2020); The Blue Guy (2020) และ Ethnography of the House (2019) ที่ บอกเลาการเคลื่อนยายของชายชาวไทใหญที่ตองพลัดถิ่นมาคาบริการในเชียงใหม และภาพถายชุด Nannies (2022) ของดวงตะวัน ศิริคูณ จะ พาผูชมไปพิจารณาถึงความพราเลือนของอัตลักษณคนทํางานจากตางจังหวัดเมื่อตองกาวเขาไปสูพื้นที่ที่เปนบานของ ‘คนอื่น’ ถัดจากเสนในเชิงกายภาพ ก็จะเขาสูโลกที่ถูกกางกั้นดวยเสนในเชิงนามธรรม ดวยงานของโยษิตา พานิชเจริญ ชุด Homemaker Creed (2020) ที่วิพากษคอนเซ็ปตที่ตาจับตองไมไดอยาง ‘กรอบเพศ’ ที่ทําใหเราเขาใจถึงอารมณของผูหญิงที่ถูกกรอบทางเพศกําหนดไวใหเปนเพียง เมีย และ แม จนกลายเปนคําถามที่สังคมไมเคยใหคําอธิบาย คลายกับวิธีการนําเสนองานของพันเลิศ ศรีพรหม ศิลปนขามเพศหนึ่งเดียวในนิทรรศการ ชุด JESUISEDA - พระ-พุทธะ-เจาคะ (2018) ที่วิจารณกระบวนการการกาวขามทางจิตวิญญาณผานเครื่องนุงหม ที่ถูกควบคุมโดยสถาบันสงฆ และสงวนไวใหเพียงเพศชายตามกําเนิดเทานั้น ผานชุดงานประเภทภาพถายของเธอ และปดทายดวยศิลปะการแสดงชุด A Bloody Business (2022) จากศศพินทุ ศิริวาณิชย และทีมงาน ที่ฉายใหผูชมเห็นถึงชีวิตประจําวันของแรงงานที่ตองแบกรับคาใชจายจากผลิตภัณฑ ‘ประจําเดือน’ ที่สวนทางกับคาครองชีพ เมื่อผสานเสนทั้งในเชิงกายภาพและในเชิงนามธรรม ก็จะพบวา แรงงานทั้งหมดที่นําเสนอถูกยึดโยงกันไมวาทางใดก็ทางหนึ่งไมวาจะเปนเสนกาง กั้นดานเพศหรือเสนกางกั้นทางชนชั้น และแมจะเหมือน จะตาง จะถูกยกยอง หรือจะถูกกดทับอยางไรก็ตามแต สิ่งหนึ่งที่ทุกผูใชแรงงานมีรวม กันก็คือ สถานะการเปนแรงงาน เมื่อเชื่อมโยงกับสถานการณปจจุบันที่ประเด็นเรื่องรัฐสวัสดิการถูกเรียกรองใหเกิดขึ้นอยูเรื่อย ก็ยิ่งขับเนนถึง ‘ความเรงดวน’ ของวิกฤตดังกลาวไปอีก เมื่อการนําเสนอภาพผูใชแรงงานในนิทรรศการที่ไมเคยปรากฏอยางชัดเจนมากอนในสื่อกระแสหลักเปน เสมือนการจําลองโลกในอุดมคติ การเขารวมงานนิทรรศการนี้จึงไมตางอะไรกับเสียงกนรองและการประทวงตามทองถนนที่เปนเหมือนภาพ สะท อ นของความล ม เหลวในการโอบอุ ม ประชาชนโดยรั ฐ บาลท า ยที่ สุ ด ความมุ ง หวั ง ของกลุ ม ภั ณ ฑารั ก ษ ก็ คื อ การเน น ยํ้า วาทกรรมที่ ว า “มนุษยทุกคนตางคือแรงงาน” เพื่อไมใหมีใครคนใดคนหนึ่งถูกทิ้งไวขางหลังเพียงเพราะความแตกตางจาก ‘เสน’ ใด

Labour, a two-syllable word that may ring a bell to many people, has a meaning that fluctuates according to personal experience. Although we come across a variety of labour every day, very few understand the meaning of labourers and see other labourers as those who are in the same situation. Often we have forgotten that we are labourers, as well.

In this exploitative capitalist society where money reigns our lives, workers are slowly demarcated from each other: be it from different salary ranges, different taxes, hierarchy in the workplace, being on a freelance contract, or receiving a daily wage. Apart from that, we have also been barred from each other by other ‘lines’ that have been written over and over. These lines have become bold and effective in keeping us apart that sometimes, we forget and lose our empathy towards other labourers. These lines that border us from each other range from geographical boundaries to publicprivate space, gender, race, and belief.

Undeniably, the mainstream media is also another factor that affects public recognition of the definition of labourers.

Repetitively, labourers have been portrayed through the media as only male blue-collar workers. With this limited portrayal, the understanding among the public is also restricted to only what has been aired, even though, all work contributes to the betterment of society.

From the aforementioned reasons, ‘Crossing the Lines’ therefore underlines the idea that we are all labourers. However, this does not mean that all labourers are the same or are replaceable. We firmly believe that all labourers have gone through the experience of injustice, exhaustion, and hopelessness from being exploited. In this exhibition, the word labour will be redefined through stories, words, and life experiences that are not easily found in mainstream media or historical documents. These art pieces, meticulously crafted by contemporary female and LGBTQ+ artists, will plunge viewers into the lives of labourers that have been pushed to the margin and made unfamiliar by non-inclusive media.

The exhibition “Crossing the Lines” forces us to interrogate the categorization of gender and social class among other things. The artworks are tied loosely into two groups: crossing physical lines and crossing abstract lines. Here lie in the first group –crossing physical lines –three artists; Jureeporn Pedking’s The Overseas Chinese (2022; 2020) which takes us into the memoryscape of Chinese immigrants of the early Rattanakosin era, while Samak Kosem’s collection of Ethnography of the House (2019), Aliens in Adam’s Apple (2020), The Blue Guy (2020) and Animal Man Show (2022) extrapolates on Shan male sex workers in Chiangmai, and lastly, Duangtawan Sirikoon’s Nannies (2022) takes us into the negotiation of a worker’s identity in their employer’s house.

The other group threads together abstract lines. This starts with Yosita Panitcharoen’s Homemaker Creed (2020) which revolves around the aforementioned unpaid labour, housewife, but with such a different lens as gender framework, which will make us understand the feelings of women whose destinies have been framed solely into being a wife and a mother. Like Panitcharoen, Phanlert Sriprom, the only transgender person featuring in the exhibition, crticises the process of spiritual transcendence through clothes have been governed by monastery institutions and restricted only for cis-males in her work JESUISEDA (2018). Last but not least, the performance art A Bloody Business (2022) co-crafted

by Sasapon Siriwanij and the curator team reflects the daily life of labourers who have to cover the expense related to ‘period’ by themselves while struggling with making ends meet.

With these physical and abstract lines combined, we realise that all labourers are strung together by certain aspects; either by gender or class issues. Societal recognition or exploitation may differ but one thing we have in common is the status of being a labourer. Considering the ongoing situation where various political movements are calling out for the country to become a welfare state, this issue could not be more “urgent.” By connecting viewers with labourers who have rarely been represented in mainstream media, this exhibition therefore also posits itself as a simulated utopia.

Joining the exhibition is thus not different from joining a political protest; screaming and shouting against the government’s failure to take care of its citizens. Lastly, the ultimate goal of the curators is to pass on Karl Marx’s message; everyone is a labourer—to be as inclusive as possible so no one could ever be left behind due to any differences drawn by any “line.”

Her research interests include Queer Muslims, Post-Colonialism and Public Memory. Apart from that, stories hidden in the marginalia of old Anisong palm-leaf manuscripts from Laos also drew her into working as a research assistant at her institute.

PANOD SRINUAL หลังจากไดรับทุนแลกเปลี่ยนจาก Universiti Brunei Darussalam ประเทศบรูไน ดารุสซาลามเพื่อศึกษาดานเฟมินิสตมุสลิม ปณตก็กลับ มาศึกษาตอที่คณะอักษรศาสตร จุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย สาขาวิชาภาษาอังกฤษ จนจบ กอนจะเริ่มตนงานดวยการเปนนักเขียนและที่ ปรึกษาเชิงวิชาการดานเพศภาวะ และยายสายงานมาเปนผูชวยโครงการดานสุขภาวะสําหรับคนขามเพศใน ป 2021 หนังสือของเธอทั้ง 2 เลม (เรื่องเลา ของเตยฯ และ บันทึกกะเทยอีสาน) ไดรับเลือกใหชนะโครงการสนับสนุนรัฐสวัสดิการและโครงการสนับสนุนการตีแผประเด็น ทางสังคมตามลําดับ และในปถัดมา เธอก็ไดรับคัดเลือกใหเปน 100 บุคคลสุดทายเพื่อเขาชิงรางวัล The People Award 2022 ถือเปนคน ขามเพศคนแรกของประเทศไทยที่ไดเขาชิง ปจจุบัน ปณตดํารงตําแหนงเปน Executive Director ใหกับ GendersMatter ซึ่งเปนสํานัก สื่อดานเพศและอัตลักษณทับซอนที่เธอเปนผูกอตั้ง started her career after receiving an exchange scholarship from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Brunei to study about Muslim feminism. She then relocated back to Thailand to work as a project assistant for transgender health and wellness projects. She currently works as an Executive Director at “GendersMatter” news agency to promote gender diversity in Thailand. Srinual is also the first Thai transgender person to be nominated for The People Award 2022.

TRITHIDA TRISING หลังจบการศึกษาจากคณะอักษรศาสตร เอกภาษาอิตาเลียนจากจุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย ไดตัดสินใจตามหาความฝนที่มีตอศิลปะและ วัฒนธรรมอิตาเลียน ดวยการศึกษาตอในหลักสูตรบริหารศิลปะและวัฒนธรรม ที่ University of Bologna โดยไดรับทุนสนับสนุนจาก รัฐบาลอิตาลี และไดมีโอกาสฝกงานกับอารตแกลเลอรีแหงหนึ่ง ที่เมืองมิลาน ประเทศอิตาลี ตรีธิดาสนใจประเด็นเรื่อเพศในประวัติศาสตร ศิลปะ โดยเฉพาะมูฟเมนต Feminist Art และตั้งใจอยากเปนภัณฑารักษเพื่อใชศิลปะเปนตัวกลางในการจุดประเด็นการ พูดคุยระหวาง บุคคล โดยหวังวาบทสนทนาดังกลาวจะกอใหเกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลงไดในทางใดทางหนึ่ง after graduating with a BA in Italian Language and Literature from the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Trising pursued her interest in Italian art and culture by studying in Arts and Culture Management at University of Bologna, where she was granted a scholarship by the Italian government. During this MA degree, she also completed an internship at an art gallery in Milan. Trising is interested in gender issues in art history, especially Feminist Art, and wants to use art to create debate and propel for social change.

ดวงตะวัน ศิริคูณจบปริญญาตรีจากคณะสถาปตยกรรมศาสตร ภาควิชาการ ออกแบบอุตสาหกรรม จุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย ปจจุบนั เปนผูก ํากับโฆษณา และครีเอทีฟไดเรกเตอรผูกอตั้ง ‘B1 Films’ ในป 2022 ดวงตะวันไดรับ รางวัลบรอนซจากงาน Adfest งานภาพถายกึ่งสารคดีของดวงตะวันมักได รับอิทธิพลมาจากแนวคิดสตรีนยิ มทีเ่ ธอนํามาปรับใหเขากับบริบทของสังคม ไทยรวมสมัย โดยหวังใชภาพถายเปนเครื่องมือในการสื่อสารประเด็นทาง สังคมและการเมือง

Duangtawan Sirikoon received a BA in Industrial Design from the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, and currently works as a director for advertisements.

She also founded and serves as Artistic Director at ‘B1 Films.’ Her advertisements have been awarded various prestigious prizes such as the Bronze prize from Adfest 2022. Through photographic language, she aims to push for social change and contextualise Feminism with Thai society.

For this collection of photos, Sirikoon interviewed women who came to Bangkok to work as nannies. Their voices and thoughts are represented via the interior design and objects in the homes they work for. Pondering on how identity is negotiated, how distance between employer and employee is blurred, Sirikoon asks how nannies have to sacrifice their own family for someone else’s family.

JUREEPORN PEDKING

Jureeporn Pedking received a PhD in Visual Arts Education from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts from Silpakorn University.

Her interests lie in how identity is shaped through social change. She started researching and developing The Overseas Chinese in 2018.

Inspired by the cultural memory of Chinese migrant workers that she came into contact with, Pedking developed further works in the same collection, such as Breath, One mat, one pillow, and I’m Working that has been exhibited at Lhong 1919, the ‘Miss & Miss’ exhibition at ARDELS’ Third Place Gallery, as well as Bangkok Art Biennale 2020.

While A cupboard (2022) in the same collection portrays the simple life of migrants, and how each bowl of rice differs according to individual experience. Pedking also recorded herself making the bowls in the 60-minute video performance entitled day after day (2022), thus, bridging the memory of the maker with the object of labour once again.

Eda Phanlert Sriprom received a BA in Fashion and Textiles from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University, and a MA in Image Fashion from Institut Français de la Mode in Paris, France. She has worked with many international fashion houses before becoming an independent designer, artist, and founder of Eda Editions in Berlin, Germany.

With her background in fashion, Eda’s work plays with the semiotics in textile and how clothes frame our role in society.

The semi-documentary photo collection JESUISEDA (2018) questions the transgression into monkhood via robes, and how it is restricted only for cis-males. Through the patched handkerchiefs that Eda wraps around her body, the artist alludes to the notion of wiping down the boundaries between monkhood and laymen, male and female.

SAMAK KOSEM

Samak Kosem is currently pursuing a PhD in Social Sciences at Chiang Mai University. They work in the field of anthropology and visual culture which are portrayed through ethnography by movie images, photography, objects and text. Kosem has presented their work in both solo and group shows at Blindspot Gallery, Hong Kong 2021; Tainan Art Museum, Taiwan 2020; Vargas Museum, University of the Philippines 2020; Thammasat Museum of Anthropology 2020; nca | nichido contemporary art, Tokyo and Taipei; Bangkok Art Biennale 2018.

วิดีโอชุด Aliens in Adam’s Apple (2020) และ The Blue Guy (2020), งานคอลลาจชุด Animal Man Show (2021) และงานบันทึก ภาคสนามชุด Ethnography of the House (2019) นํา เสนอ อัตลักษณทับซอนของผูคาบริการทางเพศชาวไทใหญ ทีน่ อกจากตองเจอกับการกดทับจากการประกอบอาชีพทีไ่ มไดรบั ความ คุมครองทางกฎหมายแลว ยังทับซอนดวยการเปนแรงงานอพยพขาม เขตแดน การเปนชน กลุมนอย ตลอดจนการแสดงลักษณะเพศชายที่ ถูกผลิตขึ้นในลักษณะใหมและหลากหลาย

The project exhibited here is based on their anthropological research titled “Queering Shan Masculinity” (2017) which explores the interface between queerness and migration, challenging assumptions about masculinity and sexual perceptions of Shan male migrants in Chiang Mai through the critical framework of body politics and representation.

Moreover, the works also posit the question of minority rights anf the legalization of sex work.

ศศพินทุ ศิริวาณิชยจบปริญญาตรีและปริญญาโทจากภาควิชาภาษา และวรรณคดีองั กฤษ จุฬาลงกรณมหาวิทยาลัย ปจจุบนั เปนสมาชิกหลัก ของคณะละคร B-Floor โดยรับหนาทีน่ กั แสดงและผูอ ํานวยการสราง นอกจากนี้ ศศพินทุยังเปนผูรวมกอตั้งกลุมละคร For What และรวม แสดง ผลิตและกํากับรวมกับคณะละครไทยและนานาชาติหลายแหง ในป 2017 ศศพินทุไ ดรบั รางวัล Best Performance สาขาศิลปนหญิง จากผลงาน ชุด OH! ODE ที่มอบโดย IATC-Thailand ผลงาน ชิ้น ดังกลาวไดรับเชิญใหจัดแสดงในเทศการ Berliner Herbstsalon 2019 โดยโรงละคร Maxim Gorki ณ กรุงเบอรลิน นอกจากนี้ ศศพินทุยังเปน Artistic Director ประจํา Bangkok International Performing Arts Meeting (BIPAM) พรอมกับเปนผูผลิตอิสระใน โครงการนานาชาติดวยเชนกัน Sasapin Siriwanij graduated from Chulalongkorn University, where she received her M.A and B.A in English Literature. A core member of B-Floor Theatre, she has performed in numerous highly awarded productions with the company.

She co-founded For What Theatre, and has produced, directed, and performed with other Thai theatres and international collaborators. In 2017, she was awarded ‘Best Performance by a Female Artist’ by IATC-Thailand for her work “OH! ODE", which was later invited as part of the 4th Berliner Herbstsalon 2019 by the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Siriwanij also currently serves as Artistic Director of Bangkok International Performing Arts Meeting (BIPAM) alongside producing independently for international projects.

Through her performance A Bloody Business (2022), Siriwanij pulls us into contact with different types of labourers that are rarely thought of as such, and how the burden of shouldering pink tax is unfair.

YOSITA PANITCHAROEN

Yosita Panitcharoen graduated from the Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University. She currently runs a clothes brand ‘Its Rottenbrat’ and ‘CatBomb’ the jewellery line. She also is a freelance artist for ‘stuffedheart veinstring’ a platform focusing on digital art and NFTs. Her work is inspired from her cultish fever dreams, fairy tales, Gothicism and the Victorian era.

งานศิลปะจัดวาง Homemaker Creed (2020) นําเสนอการเสีย สละจิตวิญญาณและความฝนของสตรีเพศ ที่ตองสูญเสียไปหลัง จากกาวเทาเขาบานเพื่อรับบทบาท ‘แม’ และ ‘เมีย’ ตามที่สังคม ชายเปนใหญตีกรอบไว และแมจะใชเวลาทั้งชีวิตที่เหลือทํางาน ดังกลาว สังคมสวนใหญก็ลวนเพิกเฉยตอ ‘คุณคา’ นั้น ตลอดจน ไมไดถกู มองวาเปนงาน เพียงเพราะไมไดสรางมูลคาทางเศรษฐกิจ งานชุดนี้สะกิดใหฉุกคิดวา จะดีกวาไหมถาเรามองเห็นคุณคาของ งานทุกงานที่ทํา โดยไมไดใชแคมูลคาทางเศรษฐกิจเปนตัวชี้วัด อยางเดียว

The installation Homemaker Creed (2020) signifies dreams and aspirations that women have to give up under patriarchy for the roles of a ‘mother’ and ‘wife.’

Although this unpaid work takes up more hours in a day, it is not recognized as ‘work’ since it does not result in any economical value. Wouldn’t it be better if we appreciate all the labour that goes into every kind of work, and see that care work makes the world go round?
