ELEVATED EVERYDAY

Experience a fresh take on timeless aromatics with these two vibrant, health-conscious treats.

By drawing inspiration from traditional Middle Eastern ingredients like delicate orange blossom water and rich pistachios, I've put together a refreshing fruit smoothie and a chewy chocolate oat bar that feel like a dessert but nourish like a snack.

ORANGE BLOSSOM FRUIT SMOOTHIE Ingredients • 2 cups of your desired frozen fruit (I used frozen mango, peaches, dragon fruit, and strawberries) • 3 tbsp orange blossom water • 3 tbsp honey, plus extra for garnish • Shredded coconut for garnish

Directions 1 . In a blender, combine orange blossom water, honey, and fresh fruit, then purée until smooth.

You can add a small splash of water (a tbsp at a time) to the mixture if the blend is coming out a little too thick or, if it is not blending easily.

2. Pour into a glass, finishing it with coconut flakes and a drizzle of honey. You can also pour the smoothie in stages, adding the honey and coconut in-between each layer.

PISTACHIO CHOCOLATE OAT BARS Ingredients • ¾ cup pistachios, chopped • ¼ cup pecans, chopped • ½ cup rolled oats • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips • ¼ cup ground flaxseed • ¼ tsp salt • 1 tbsp coconut sugar • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted • 1 tbsp unsalted almond butter • 3 tbsp maple syrup • ½ tsp almond extract • 1 tbsp honey

Directions 1 . Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.

Set aside for later.

2. Add pistachios, pecans, oats, chocolate chips, flaxseed, and salt to a bowl. Stir until well mixed.

3. In a separate bowl, add coconut sugar, coconut oil, almond butter, maple syrup, honey and almond extract. Mix using a spatula until well incorporated.

4. Pour the dry ingredients over the wet, then, using a rubber spatula, fold until very well mixed.

5. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan.

Then, using the spatula, press the mixture firmly down into an even, very tightly packed layer.

6. Bake for 22-27 minutes.

7. Place the pan onto a cooling rack to cool for about 30 minutes, or until completely firm. After, lift bars and parchment paper onto the cooling rack to finish cooling for 1-2 hours. Slice and enjoy!

While ABS has no plans to pivot away from printers and copiers, Burnett emphasizes the company’s present-day expertise in and access to mailing machines, all varieties of cabling, and phone and videoconferencing equipment, among other business products. "We continue to deliver top-tier products from the industry’s most trusted manufacturers, backed by the reliable, personalized service that has earned us a reputation for excellence.”

According to Burnett, this word can mean something as simple as a door-swipe system to replace standard locks and keys, high-capacity robotic vacuum cleaners, or even humanoid robots capable of delivering room service or clearing restaurant tables. “We’re always looking for ways to bring new technology to local businesses and investing in training technicians to support local business operations,” says Burnett.

For both corporate and personal clients, ABS operates as the designated Lenovo repair depot for the Windsor area.

Advance recently began a productive business relationship with Epson, which Burnett calls, “a leader in sustainability in the printing and technology business.”

Known for using the smallest possible number of moving parts, the venerable Japanese electronics giant regularly fabricates printers and other business productivity essentials from post-consumer recycled materials using heat-free technology.

In its own purchasing and partnership decisions, ABS has prioritized ethically operating companies like Ricoh (for which it is currently “Dealer of the Year”) that willingly comply with relevant local and multinational sustainability standards.

Burnett is happy to highlight the company’s American Thanksgiving Charity Football Classic, a popular annual fundraiser that

has been held for 34 years. Last year’s event raised more than $23,000 for Ignite Academy, a “cradle to career” literacy- and numeracy-boosting initiative from United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex.

“We are fortunate to have a great team at Advance Business Systems that are always willing to put in countless hours to help put this event together,” stresses Burnett. “It keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. I was brought up in a family where both parents volunteered for many different charities, so I’ve always under-

stood the importance of giving back to the community. When I took over the company, I understood these were great initiatives that needed to be carried on.”

“At Advance Business Systems, philanthropy is clearly embedded in the culture,” adds Leslie Frattaroli, vice president of development for United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex Chatham Kent. “Owners Mike and Stacy have inspired those around them to give back in meaningful ways, from fundraising through their 34th annual Football Classic to volunteering at our annual golf tournament. Their partnership with United Way is helping create brighter futures for children and families, and we are deeply grateful for their continued leadership in the effort to eliminate childhood poverty.”

Advance is also a proud supporter of co-op programs administered by TRIOS College and the Greater Essex County District School Board, regularly hosting and training ambitious students for months at a time.

In our part of the world, anyone who has owned, operated, or otherwise been invested in a business over the past handful of years knows change can be daunting. “While we move forward, and as we continue to adapt to changing customer needs and industry trends, our foundation remains unchanged,” Burnett promises. “While our name stays the same as a tribute to our longevity and the trust from and connection to the community we’ve built over decades, I do think it’s meaningful to find small ways to mark a new chapter. I think it’s important to highlight our growth, our expanded IT focus, and our continued commitment to innovation.”

HEATED CHARITY CARSON WOODALL ON WOODY’S HOODIES Cozy hoodies, an unlikely superstar, a pandemic silver lining, and a six-figure injection into local cancer research

Carson Woodall can’t stop playing defence.

Number 24 on the ice, the Belle River native is a mobile, puck-moving D-man for the OHL West Division champion Windsor Spitfires. Increasingly, through his grassroots clothing initiative Woody’s Hoodies, Woodall is becoming just as well known for his efforts slowing the progress of an opponent more formidable than any Junior hockey skater: cancer.

In 2020, a bit stir-crazy amidst pandemic lockdowns, a 17-year-old Woodall collaborated with his father, Scott Woodall, to design and manufacture a limited run of hooded sweatshirts branded with a play on the family name. “Honestly, I’ve always liked fashion,” recalls Woodall, who had kept an eye on trends via social media, “and hoodies are my favourite item of clothing. I didn’t have any experience with a clothing line or in any type of business, but my dad had started a construction company.”

Using Scott’s connections, the pair arranged a meeting with a local print shop to learn more about the design and production processes. Woodall gifted the initial few batches of hoodies to his teammates—first with his U16 Toronto Marlboros AAA club and later with the LaSalle Vipers—to, in his words, “foster unity and camaraderie on and off the ice.”

Years later, after both his grandmothers had been diagnosed with cancer, Woodall saw an opportunity to do something more meaningful with the brand. (Woodall’s maternal grandmother, Deborah O’Brien, died from breast cancer in 2023, while his paternal grandmother, Carol Woodall, is currently living with ovarian cancer.)

“I share my stories with them, and they share theirs with me,” says Woodall, who would like to see the NCAA support the initiative in the future. “I think it shows I like to give back to my community and use my platform to help others, which is something I try to get other people to do.”

While Woodall, the second-highest scoring defenceman in OHL regular season play, has legitimate professional aspirations, his experience with Woody’s Hoodies has been a window into a productive post-hockey career path—whenever that begins. “Woody’s Hoodies has helped me learn a tonne about the business world,” shares Woodall, who will study business in Boston. “It has taught me how to manage finances and connect with people to help make sales. I’ve learned a tonne about how social media works and how it can help grow a brand.”

The Drive is happy to report Nana Woodall is ready to cheer on her grandson’s collegiate efforts. “She’s doing great!” says Woodall. “She’s been out to a bunch of my games, which is a good sign. I went to her house the other day, and she was full of energy, which I love to see.”

CONGRATULATIONS! MEET WINDSOR’S NEXT TOP PHOTOGRAPHER From a Costco miscue to in-demand photog maverick

Ryan Ouellette never dreamt of being a photographer – let alone Windsor’s Next Top Photographer. By his own admission, it all happened by chance.

“I got into it by accident,” admits Ouellette. “It was Black Friday, I had about $450 to buy presents for my kids, and I ended up buying a camera for $388 on a whim.

I went out to the car and started crying, like, ‘What did I just do?’ But my wife told me to figure out how to use it—and that’s where it all started.”

It began with that Black Friday special and grew into a passion, a passion that he develops everyday.

“I always say I’ll be better than I was yesterday—that’s what drives me,” he explains. “My daughter (Anya) is the same way, she’ll work until she’s the best at something, and I’m not going to be outworked by my own kid. So, anything I learn, I push it as far as I can.” He says that Anya, who has autism and ADHD, is a great a motivator in his life, deeply impacting his perspective. Through his daughter, he discovered he shares similar traits.

Ouellette says that he struggles internally when accepting praise but sees winning Windsor’s Next Top Photographer as validation rather than a personal ego boost. The 28

competition pushed him, requiring pre-planning, where he tends to be more spontaneous.

However, he showed his strength through his adaptability and creative flow.

One of his favourite mottos: “We’re going to have a lot of fun and great pictures will just happen,” exemplifies his thought process.

“I don’t force anything or tell people to act a certain way - I just create an environment where real emotions come out, and that’s what I capture.”

Next, Ouellette plans to attend the upcoming Olympia Bodybuilding World Championships in Las Vegas, the North American Championships in Pittsburgh, and the Toronto Pro Super Show. Following his win, he’s also excited to begin working with the Canadian Mental Health Association, contributing photography to their upcoming book and capturing Windsor-Essex through his lens as part of the “Winning” project.

“There are so many good photographers out there, I don’t ever believe the hype,” he states. “If I start believing it, that’s when I stop growing. Winning means a lot, but it really just feels like validation for the people who believed in me.”

"Oh god, please don’t bring low-rise jeans back!” I heard my friend say as we walked through the doors of Devonshire Mall, a giant advertisement for a look that screamed “Y2K” glaring at us. I looked up, flashbacks of my childhood wardrobe circling through my mind. “They’ll have to learn the hard way,” I sighed, bracing myself for a velour tracksuit with a bedazzled backside to come creeping through the shadows.

I believe it was Coco Chanel who said, “Fashion changes, but style endures,” a sentiment that perfectly captures the idea of a capsule wardrobe. I caught up with Mena Biafora Vincelli, better known as Style Me Mena, to better understand this trend that allows you to build a wardrobe full of timeless staples to make the most of your closet and your wallet. “A capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully edited collection of clothing where everything works together.

It’s not about owning less—it's about owning better,” explains Mena. “Capsule wardrobes save time in the morning and remove the ‘I have nothing to wear’ feeling. They reduce over-shopping, help you make smarter purchases, and create outfits that always look polished.”

The term “capsule wardrobe” actually dates to the 1970s and was coined by London boutique owner Susie Faux. In her book Wardrobe, Susie highlights the impor-

think you should be. If you’re not sure what your style even is, Mena suggests starting with a few guiding words. “Choose three to five words that describe how you want to look and feel—polished, edgy, feminine, relaxed. Use your words as your filter for everything.”

Functionally, most capsule wardrobes are built from a mix of core categories: tops, bottoms, layers, dresses, shoes, outerwear, and accessories. Within those, Mena points to a few tried-and-true staples: a white button-down, a classic blazer, a great pair of jeans, a little black dress, a versatile knit, neutral flats, and a structured coat.

“Each piece can be styled multiple ways,” she says. “That’s what gives you more outfits with less effort.”

But one of the most overlooked elements in any wardrobe is colour.

“Neutrals form the backbone of a capsule wardrobe,” Mena explains. “Choose two to three that flatter you, like black, navy, camel, or ivory, then add a few accent colours you love. That’s what allows everything to mix and match effortlessly.”

Fit, she adds, is just as important: “A smaller wardrobe only works if your clothes fit beautifully. Prioritize pieces that flatter your shape, and don’t be afraid to tailor.
