While the townsfolk yelled at them and threw stones. You can imagine the soldiers’ frustration and humiliation. Why did Joshua do this? It was a waste of time, bad for morale, and he risked becoming a laughing stock.

I’m the commander of the LORD’s army.” I suspect that Joshua felt sick at that moment. He fell to the ground and stayed there. He was being reminded that he, Joshua, was not the commander of the LORD’s army and it was really a question of whose side Joshua was on. Joshua was told to take his sandals off for the very ground he was on was holy. The clear message was, “This is God’s patch. Don’t mess with God”. And only then did God speak into the humbled and, I imagine, fearful heart of Joshua. “This is my show, not yours, and this is how the script will run.” And it did. You don’t win battles, God does. And God doesn’t choose sides, you do. Written by a friend and shared with permission.

They must have been difficult words for the Messiah to hear: “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” They imply “We thought you were The Answer To All Our Problems - but now we have more. We thought you’d blow away our enemies – but they still have it over us. We thought… frankly we thought you’d be more impressive.” The words must have hurt all the more coming from John the Baptist, one of the very first to point Jesus out as the Christ. But John is stuck in prison, and he won’t be coming out in one piece. So a fair question, maybe? We’re familiar with Jesus’ reply: “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” But his last sentence has always rocked me: “Blessed is anyone who does not fall away on account of me.” Think about that: Blessed are those who don’t fall away because of Jesus. Because he is not enough for them. Because he is beneath them. When Paul wrote to the Romans “I am not ashamed of the gospel,” he wasn’t merely saying that he wasn’t afraid to speak up publicly. The gospel was causing a lot of problems for the Roman church, bringing together ‘those Jews’ and ‘those Gentiles’ and all sorts of ‘those people’ – the blind, the lame, the lepers, the deaf, the dying, the poor. That in turn meant layers of difficulty and tension. It certainly didn’t make life easy. Paul knew as well as anyone that Jesus can mess your life up. But he also knew this was the way God’s power works. It would bring salvation, upend an empire, change the world and lead to ultimate glory. So I try to remember this when church is hard work, when ‘those people’ are frustrating, when progress seems slow and when God’s enemies seem to be winning. I hear Jesus saying “Blessed is anyone who does not fall away on account of me.” If those people and that path are not beneath him, they mustn’t be beneath me. Belonging Together on Earth - new resource for churches!

When I met Sharon in November last year, we were delighted to discover we were the same age as one another… but as I sat in the hot, Kenyan sun and listened to her story, my heart broke – our lives are worlds apart. Here’s what she told me. My name is Sharon, I am 34 years old and I have four children. When I was young, my life was full of hardships. I never finished school due to lack of school fees. I felt very troubled for it was like I was the only breadwinner in the family, everyone looked upon me, but I had not much to offer them. This led me into an early marriage and having children while we were not yet stable. I was struggling to start a life which I was not yet fit for. I was only seventeen years old. My husband was not working, and I was going out to look for casual work to help me get food for my children. There was a lot of starvation. I had a lot of problems and always thought back about my life and how I started as a young girl. I thought if I had finished school, maybe I would be a better person. But when I heard about a development project starting in my area, I thought about how my life would be in the future… and with courage and determination, I believed this could change our lives. I have now been able to receive a lot of trainings that have really transformed the life of my family. We have doubled our household income and improved food
nutrition for the family. All my children are in school now and I feel very happy. I give thanks to God that I am always able to make sure my children have a good education to avoid future struggles in life. I keep calling my Lord to look into the lives of my children, to have a better and bright future and pass well in school. I have seen God’s wonders in my life, for whatever I pray for is provided in Jesus name. Always, with great efforts, I see His deeds in my life. We are very grateful to them who have seen our problems. Sharon’s quiet strength taught me volumes about faith and perseverance. Hers has been a life of struggle and poverty, mine is a life of boundless opportunity. How much I have to be grateful for. Not the least of which is this… that I have the privilege of expressing generosity towards mums like Sharon – of actually seeing her and responding in love. Will you join me? Journeying Together in Mission… Being Salt and Light in Communities Providing Transition Pathways out of homelessness into community/church Baptist Care SA has been working with young people experiencing homelessness in the Inner Southern Region of Adelaide for over 25 years. 250 young people annually are provided with emergency, transitional and longer-term accommodation. One in five young people presenting to our homelessness services have experienced domestic or family violence and 17% struggle with alcohol misuse. There is a high incidence of significant family and relationship breakdown. The majority of young people in the service identify as having mental ill health issues, including depression and anxiety. Although family re-unification is sought and encouraged, that outcome is often not possible. Yo u n g p e o p l e without positive suppor tive relationships remain at a gre ater risk of Dan Newton, Blackwood social exclusion, Hills Baptist Church mental ill-health, risk-taking behaviours and experience difficulties retaining tenancies. To help facilitate a healthy transition from homelessness, we are increasingly using place based approaches to engage community members and stakeholders and tap into local skills and resources to meet the unique needs of the homeless young people in their region. The collaborative par tnership bet ween Blackwood Hills Baptist Church and Baptist Care SA’s Youth Homelessness Service is an example of this. By fostering healthy friendships between young people in the region, including young people experiencing homelessness, and homed youths from the church, via a broad range of social activities, natural friendships are encouraged and stronger social networks built. The partnership has been in place for six months and early indicators show positive development in many of the young people who are participating. This initiative was showcased in the Baptist Care SA presentation to the Autumn Assembly including a short DVD clip which can be seen here: https://youtu.be/txfPKcSB818
I have been recently been delighted to read and reflect upon a document titled “Journeying Together in Mission” that was crafted by faithful and wise representatives from both the Baptist Churches of SA and Baptist Care SA during 2016 who shared a collective vision for collaboration ministry to people and communities who are struggling under layers of adversity in their daily lives. The text beautifully expressed a genuine sense of collective missional endeavor that is nested deep within the DNA of the Baptist movement in our State. The statement expresses that: Recognising that Baptist Care SA is an expression and outworking of the mission and ministry of Baptist Churches of SA, it is also appropriate to speak of the relationship between the two organisations due to the unique and complementar y structure, personnel and role of Baptist Care SA. Therefore we will promote this framework for good work between Baptist Care SA and the Baptist churches in SA under best practice principles. The document goes on to express that: “…w e co m m i t t o w o r k together in the Spirit of Christ we share. We believe Baptist Care and Baptist Churches have unique and complementar y roles in supporting healthy, thriving co m m u n i t i e s . We w i l l promote the development of an effective continuum of care bet ween acute care ser vices and faith communities. We will be prayerful with and for one another, and be open to the voice of the Spirit. We will work to understand one another by suspending judgement, assuming the best of one another, respecting
conf idences, and being open to innovative possibilities. O ur “ journey together” envisions and establishes this as an ongoing process and provides a sense of hope for constant progress. By journeying together in this way we will set an example for our services, our churches and our communities. I find great encouragement in the faithful wisdom of these words and I hope you do too. But more importantly, I see and hear evidence that the collective missional efforts of Baptist Care working alongside local Baptist churches is in fact transforming lives and communities every day. Praise God! Reflection: Let’s pray together that our Lord’s expressed desire that all people would experience fullness of life might continue to inspire, empower and enable groups and individuals to help us realise ‘heaven on earth’. Also, the ‘May’ resources are available for use for such events. The State Office can assist on request. Prayer is vital for new and current workers, and their ongoing provision. The main prayer meeting is at the Baptist Centre (second Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm). You can receive the prayer material from Global Interaction (http://globalinteraction.org.au/ resources/pray), or establish a prayer room in your church.
The appreciation for the interest and generosity shown extends beyond the State Office and the Global Interaction cross-cultural workers. Those from the least reached people groups often comment on the opportunity to hear the good news which without such generosity would not likely to occur. As a result, God is responding to the prayers of those seeking truth and life just as much as the prayers from within Global Interaction. God’s faithfulness is evident.
