Break the cycle What the Old Testament is really teaching us The Book of Judges concludes with what has been a recurring theme: ‘Everyone did what was right in their own eyes, because there was no King in Israel’ (Judges 21:25). This is followed in our Scriptures by six books which outline the rise and fall of Israel’s Kings. Since our rebellion against God in the garden, God has been acting to call a people to Himself and through them to demonstrate to all creation how good it is to live under His rule and reign. However, bad news, we couldn’t do it! Irrespective of what God did: His rescues and provisions; His clear guidelines on what was expected or even a great and Godly leader to show the way, it never worked. At least not for long. Clearly what they needed, we need, is a Sovereign ruler, one with the authority of God Himself to lead us. However, the six books that detail how this worked show us one thing very clearly – it didn’t! At times God’s people flourished, God was honoured and the whole world was drawn to Him (eg the story of the queen of Sheba found in 1 Kings 10). But like the generations before, it was the same old cycle of faithfulness, unfaithfulness, judgement, repentance, restoration. Over and over, from one king to the next. However now it is the leaders, God’s representatives, the Kings who are the ones who led the way and whose disobedience and apostasy would lead to judgement and eventually the demise of all that had previously been achieved. God’s people were divided and sent into exile. A truly tragic tale. What are we to make of this story, our history? Well, one thing is clear: any human solution is inadequate at best, because no human mediator can achieve God’s intention on their own. A representative of God is not enough. A sinful human agent will never bring about God’s intention or achieve God’s purpose for His world.

New Teaching Series launched On Wednesday 4 July, Baptist Care SA and Baptist Churches of SA hosted the Launch of the ‘On Earth as it is in Heaven’ teaching series on biblical justice for Baptist Churches. Sixteen churches were represented across the more than 35 attendees.
Our promotion of justice must make it possible for people to take the next step.
In his words of introduction, State Executive Minister Mike Mills welcomed the opportunity to spend time on this topic. “It’s been a great, collaborative project as we together, the churches and our care arm, have reflected on our engagement in this area of justice and realised that we’ve got some growing to do. We’re working together as a movement to explore ways in which we can gain a greater sense of strength in this area”.
1. Prepare – identify where your church is on justice and set series goals (use the Justice Survey Tool)
The series is designed to be modular and flexible to the needs of individual churches and their members. “I want those who take time with this resource to consider how does this story give me a window into another way of seeing, how does it shape me and our Movement?” said Scott Higgins, author of the series. Scott outlined three premises which underpinned his work in preparing this resource: Our understanding of justice must be grounded in the biblical story Our practice of justice must be sensitive to the particularities of power and privilege

On being a tool I’ve been thinking lately about how our prayers give away our real theology. The words we use to God can say not only a lot in themselves (especially if it’s one of those long prayers), but a lot about how we view God and relate to Him.
He outlined four steps that churches and members could take in approaching the resource:

3. Apply – Consider practical situations such as Leaving Prison, Mental Illness, Refugees and Homelessness (use the Prayer Cards, Discussion Guide and video clips) 4. Partner – Consider if there are areas you’d like to pursue as an individual or church (contact Baptist Care SA to discuss ways in which you can take action). In summary, he said “The idea is that at the end of the four weeks of Baptist Care SA Month, we’ve got to a point where we’re actually doing something – we’re doing justice, not just talking about it”. Excitingly, this resource has been prepared by and for South Australian Baptists, but we anticipate it will be shared across the Baptist Movement nationally in the very near future.
By Andrew Turner Church Development Facilitator When we pray like that we’re really putting ourselves at the centre and seeing ourselves as the prime movers. And God as our helper. He is, of course. It’s definitely not wrong to ask God for help!
Sacred Agents should talk to God a lot. I mean, we want to represent Him well, don’t we. We can’t be witnesses to something we haven’t experienced, so we want to know Christ well not only for our own sakes but also to be able to introduce others to Him.
But so many of my prayers are shaped like this, I think it gives away that I see prayer as a tool to help get things done, and truth be told, I can treat God’s Spirit as a tool to power my mission. But it’s God’s mission. And far better for us to see ourselves as instruments surrendered to God for His use.
But I’ve noticed how much my own prayers begin with “Lord, help me to…” Do yours?
Am I just playing with words here? No, I think our words reveal our hearts. So a
simple spiritual discipline for me as a sacred agent is this: To try to ask the Lord open questions. Instead of requests that basically require a “Yes Andrew” or “No Andrew” – or possibly “Wait Andrew”, I’m trying to ask Him questions like “Lord, how can I be of service to you today?” “Who do you want me to particularly notice?” “What are you wanting to teach us, Lord?” And hopefully, through the discipline of the words, the heart is gradually shaped. Can you be a good sacred agent without being a complete tool? Well, not in that sense.

We are now well into the 100 People 100 Days appeal and we have been encouraged by the number of new supporters that are partnering with Global Interaction for the first time. With a good number of South Australian families that are keen to be serving the Khmer people of Cambodia and the Yawo people of Malawi, they now need our understanding (learning about their journey and encouraging them), our prayers, and our financial support. The nine different people groups that Global Interaction go and serve are classed as ‘leastreached’. By definition, this means that there is less than one percent of people in their own tribe or people group that know or understand who Jesus is. For many people groups with cultural barriers, they may never have the opportunity to hear about Jesus in a way that makes sense to them, if at all. So, the 100 People 100 Days appeal is an opportunity for you to partner with families who feel that God is calling them to go and build relationships with these least-reached people groups. They are answering God and choosing to go. They understand the cultures and way of life of these people groups. As they build relationships they can then share who Jesus is so that these communities can be empowered to develop their own distinctive ways of following Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. It is literally life changing work that is not easy and not fast but in God’s strength, is an important part of God’s work to reach out in love to the entire world. If you would like for one of our families to come and share their story or share a bit about these leastreached people groups, then we can arrange for them to come and speak at your church, in your small group or at a mid-week activity. Sima’s incredible story By Baptist World Aid Australia August marks the beginning of Baptist World Aid’s Be Love Sponsorship Sunday season. “It’s one of our team’s favourite times of the year,” says Baptist World Aid Communications Coordinator, Samara Linehan, “because it’s a time when we can celebrate with churches the incredible impact they’re having for children living in poverty, thanks to their generous Child Sponsorship.” Since the beginning of its first Child Sponsorship program in 1974, Baptist World Aid has been dedicated to ensuring that children have the future they deserve. “This year, we’ll be sharing with you the inspiring story of a young girl named Sima,” says Samara. “I had the privilege of meeting Sima on a recent trip to Nepal.” Sima is a bright young girl, with her whole life ahead of her. But, as Samara found out, things might have been very different without the help of Sima’s Australian Child Sponsors, Graham and Carly. “Before her family joined the Baptist World Aid Child Sponsorship project, Sima’s mum struggled to pay for her school fees,” she explains. “In fact, it would not have taken much to end Sima’s education for good, trapping her in a life of poverty.” “But through the Child Sponsorship project, Sima’s mum was trained in goat raising and vegetable farming, which has helped her to grow her income. Now, it’s easier to pay for Sima’s school fees and there are plenty of fresh vegetables for the family as well!” In a village, like Sima’s, growing your own food means so much more than food on your plate. A trip to market is not only a four-hour walk each way, it’s also a treacherous journey. “It’s something I didn’t truly understand until I’d attempted walking that impossible terrain myself,” admits Samara. “There I was, on the side of a cliff, muscles screaming in agony, and I suddenly comprehended what a convenient supply of food could mean to a family like Sima’s.” God is using the generosity of Australian Child Sponsors to bless families and free children, like Sima, from poverty. Today, Sima is at the top of her class. In the future, she hopes to bless others in her village by becoming a nurse. “Of course, your generous Child Sponsorship means full stomachs and it means a good education… but it also means so much more,” says Samara. “When you sponsor a child, like Sima, you help give them hope for a brighter future – and that is just incredible!” Be part of an incredible story. I firmly believe there are unexplored opportunities just over the horizon, awaiting our discovery and that these could be harvested in a way that would see our collective Baptist Movement developing powerful antidotes to the 3 Social Plagues of the 21st Century?

We are familiar with our ‘Rear Vision Mirror’ view: Our Baptist movement has a long and proud history of service to the communities of SA, but is this enough? Is occasional support for WestCare a sufficient expression of our Lord’s call for his people to ‘Be SALT’ and ‘Shed Light’ in our troubled world? So what might we see in the ‘Windscreen View’? What might it look like if Baptist Care more purposefully ‘teamed up’ with local Baptist Churches and we really worked ‘together in mission’? What if just a few of us (let’s say a dozen)… formed a unified and mobilised group of people and resources, who felt empowered and enabled to boldly set out to address the 3 Social Plagues in local communities? Be careful now… as Christians we know what an impact 12 faithful people can have on the world! I wonder if we could welcome and strengthen a few vulnerable families, or perhaps play a more proactive role in fostering healthy inclusive and creating connected communities. Baptist Care SA has been exploring these questions with an increasingly energised group Baptist Pastors and Leaders. We have been challenged and inspired by the words and work of Scott Higgins, a Baptist Pastor and theologian who is highly regarded for his insights and experience in national and global social justice arenas. Will you join us in prayerfully considering the two sides (but 3 images) of a coin? Proclamation of the Gospel on one side Demonstration of the Gospel on the other side But what’s the third dimension? – Consider what happens when the coin begins spinning it on its edge… becoming an energised 3 dimensional sphere that has depth and momentum During Baptist Care SA month: I invite you to pray that our Baptist movement might out-grow the outdated two-dimensional model which seems to trap us into thinking the Gospel is conveyed via either one or the other approach. As people of ‘the Way’, let’s not limit our vision, nor restrain our aspirations, as we week to connect with and serve our communities and support the transition pathway toward fullness of life. Unprecedented response to Baptist Care SA’s blanket appeal brings relief from icy weather Winter is a cruel time to be homeless. But hundreds of people who would have been shivering through the nights this winter have received the gift of warm bedding, thanks to an unprecedented response to Baptist Care SA’s blanket and sleeping bag appeal. Two hundred and fifty blankets have been donated as well as fifty brand new sleeping bags. “It’s been an amazing response,” says WestCare Centre Manager, Stefano Tocci. The bedding is being gifted to people as they seek help at the WestCare Centre. Some of the sleeping bags will remain in the Centre for use during Code Blue extreme weather responses, the latest of which took place just a few weeks ago. During 14 and 15 June, our WestCare Centre remained open for over 48 hours. But as wild weather wreaked havoc across the Adelaide metropolitan area, the atmosphere inside the Centre was one of warmth and “incredible relief”.

Sixty-three men and women took refuge in the Centre over the 2 nights. Each received a hot meal, a warm drink and a bed for the night, as well as a blanket to keep when they left. This parting gift wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible community response. Thank you to the churches, local businesses, members of the general public and Baptist Care SA staff who have given so generously. We’ve also received gifts of toiletries, warm clothing and nonperishable food items. Not only can our clients keep warm, but they know someone is thinking about them. Many thanks also to the WestCare staff and volunteers who worked so tirelessly during Code Blue.

The ‘Connections’ project aims to deliver information sessions and events developing relevant resources to share with people living with a disability and their carers to achieve a community that is genuinely ‘better together’. Working with a project advisory group including those living with a disability and their carers to co-design and codeliver information sessions and develop relevant resources to share with communities across the state. You will also liaise with church congregations to host events where you will be responsible for sharing this information enabling ‘Connections’. We are seeking applicants who hold a relevant degree
qualification and experience working within the disability sector or a similar role. Our ideal candidate will be a person who has a passion to support and empower others to achieve along with sound interpersonal skills and previous experience delivery community projects whilst achieving desired outcomes. Baptist Care SA is opening a Community Food Hub in Adelaide’s South West at our Inner City location; 11-19 Millers Court, Adelaide, in partnership with Food Bank SA. The Food Hub will give those in need the opportunity to shop for nutritious food and essential items at a reduced cost compared to general supermarkets. Members of the community with a concession card are eligible to shop at Baptist Care SA Food Hub; this includes people who are experiencing homelessness, students and those on a pension card.
You are invited to visit Baptist Care SA’s WestCare Centre and Inner City site to learn more about the services we provide to the community and how you can get involved.
