What the Old Testament is really teaching us Since the beginning of this year I have been reading through the Old Testament and preaching the Big Story of the Bible. Having just preached from Abraham to Joseph, and finishing reading the book of Judges, I am left with more questions than answers. Certainly there is not a lot in the characters described that inspires confidence or would cause you to say: “I wish my children/grandchildren were just like ...” Take your pick: Adam – well, what can we say. The mess we are in is his fault! Or Abraham, who wasn’t exactly the ideal husband, and certainly not Jacob, the deceiver and manipulator, despite having his name changed to Israel! And when you turn to Judges, things only get worse! So what’s going on? What’s it all about?

Could it be that these stories are not principally about the characters within them, but rather; who is this God they are called to believe in and what is he really like? Can he be trusted? Is he fair? How does he compare to all the other gods around? It is these questions which are clearly answered as God rescues his people from slavery in Egypt, leads them through the wilderness and establishes them in their promised land! In fact throughout the story we discover him to be a God who is faithful to his promises, powerful enough to fulfil his purposes. A God who is slow to anger and abounds in steadfast love. A God who is merciful and compassionate. A God who is intent on making himself known and reconciling the World to himself. This, even in the midst of their constant rebellion and failure!

What happened at AUTUMN ASSEMBLY Delegates from across our movement gathered at Knightsbridge Baptist Church on the 18th May to celebrate and discern how God is at work among and through us. President Mark Foley shared from Hebrews 1. Mark observed that often when reading scripture, we put the spotlight on the wrong thing and focus on the characters of the stories rather than God, who works through rebellious and sinful characters. The events of scripture tell us about God; who He is, what He’s like, what He’s doing. It’s all about God. What we do is in response to God, His grace, love and mercy to include us in His mission.
The agenda for the evening included welcoming Camden Baptist Church as a Member Church. Camden is a historical member church, who had regathered under Holdfast Baptist and are now ready to become autonomous again.

How did you go with May Mission Month? I really loved the theme of full dependence on God as exampled in John 15 when Jesus explains that he is the vine and we are the branches. This is so relevant in every part of our lives including mission where we desire to see fruit. Whilst some of us may find it easy to spend time with our friends and family, building relationships and through life share the love of Jesus locally, being able to do that with people on the other side of the world seems much more difficult. 100 People in 100 days is your opportunity to prayerfully consider partnering with the families that are being called to share the news of Jesus globally. An opportunity to join the team by: Praying for the candidates: for their continuing development, for God to be preparing them to build relationships cross-culturally and for courage to share the good news of Jesus in a culturally appropriate way. Giving by pledging a regular amount: Ongoing financial partnership works best when our candidates are being supported for the long term with a regular gift. Prayerfully consider what that may look like; It could be as simple as starting with what you would spend on a cup of coffee of each week? Understanding what the candidates and their call: where they are going, who the people groups are that they are trying to share life with. Of the 7000 least reached people groups around the world (less than 1% Christian), Global Interaction are currently committed to working with 9 of these people groups. Cambodia has over 40 people groups in the one country. The Hutchinson family are going to serve among the Khmer of Cambodia. The Khmer find it challenging to strive towards being more western while still maintaining traditional family values. 2
Malawi and Mozambique are home to the people group called The Yawo. Malawi is where the Haydon Family and Andy & Rachel Stevens are feeling called. The Yawo face regular challenges including access to safe water and enough food to eat, as well as health care and education. 3

A Mother’s Heart By Rose Young
My 7-year-old daughter and I have an ongoing discussion about what she’s going to do when she grows up. She changes her mind often, but the other day the conversation took a different turn. “I want to do what you do, Mummy,” she said, all wideeyed innocence, “because you help poor people. Don’t you, Mummy?” I hesitated before I replied. “Yes.” Sitting in an office chair, in front of a computer screen, tapping out work on a keyboard, it’s easy to feel somewhat removed from what goes on in the field – the projects that help families who struggle, every day, because of crippling poverty. But this comment from my daughter reminded me that, while the bulk of my job might be about encouraging Australian Christians to be generous, the people who are most impacted are the ones supported by your donations. On the day I meet Rith, she is busy preparing food that she sells at the local school. She is shy at first. She places steamed sweet potato in front of us and walks back to cut up vegetables and cook rice over an open fire on the dirt. Later, I watch as Rith strains to pull the cart she takes to the school her young son attends, where she sells the food she has prepared. I see her daughter come home from school to feed the cows and walk them down to the rice paddy to drink. As the day goes on, Rith shares her story with me. About her achievements she chatted happily. It is harder for her to talk about her past – having to drop out of school to care for her siblings as a young girl; the nights she lay awake hungry, wondering if she’d have enough to feed her family, or pay for a doctor for her sick husband; the days spent in back-breaking labour in the rice paddy, only to watch floods wipe out her crop. Rith’s life was sad, lonely, and frightening. She wondered what on earth she would do for her children’s future. She had no way to make a better life for them. There was fear in her heart. Reflecting on this today, even as a mum myself, I struggle to understand what Rith must have gone through. But what I can understand is Rith’s immeasurable, enduring, and fierce love for her children… and how it must have broken her heart when she was unable to give them every chance to succeed. Next week, my daughter will probably move on to dreaming of becoming a teacher or a hairdresser. But whatever her next dream might be, I have no fear… because I can provide for my children’s future. And now, thanks to your generosity, Rith can do the same! Because of your gifts to the Matching Grant Appeal, Rith received all kinds of training, from fish farming to cattle raising. And, as it turns out, Rith is a brilliant entrepreneur! She has now built up six income streams – enough to give all her children an education… something she could scarcely have imagined a few short years ago. Today, Rith has a new peace. The fear in her heart has been wiped out. It’s gone. And you can do the same for other mums like her. I believe that the love I feel for my children, and the love Rith has for hers, comes from God. It is a shadow of what God feels for all people created in His image and it binds us to her story. It should drive us to see Rith, and others like her, as God does… and pour out our love in response. The Dowry of the Meek The Dowry of the Meek is a documentary film which explores the journey of Hoa Stone from the Company of Grace in Vietnam. Hoa’s early years were spent in an orphanage in Vietnam. He suffered from polio and lost the use of his legs. Hoa, was evacuated with other orphans when the US army withdrew from Vietnam. He was brought to Australia as a refugee and adopted by the Stone family in Adelaide. Hoa’s childhood in Adelaide was happy but included major surgery for his disability and the sudden death of his brother. During his teens Hoa’s life fragmented as he struggled to come to term with the pain of his past and his disability. He drifted into the drug culture, addiction and dealing. In his early twenties Hoa experienced a religious conversion to Christianity. The outcome was freedom from addiction and significant inner healing. Hoa trained as a Baptist pastor became the minister of a Vietnamese church in Cabramatta then returned to Vietnam where he has been working for over 20 years. He has established the Company of Grace a centre for assisting disabled Vietnamese and their families. Sacred Agents
The Ministry of Inreach By Andrew Turner Church Development Facilitator You can’t reach those you don’t love. Sacred agents find this out sooner or later. If our calling was just to drop off a message from God, we could simply find a nice efficient way, get it done and move on. But we’re called to embody a message from God, to represent Christ to others. Like Jonah, we need to learn not only to obey and go, but also to actually care. Our mission is not just to win arguments, but to win people. But all of this is Mission 101. Basic principles of outreach that most sacred agents get. But do we get that the same principles apply to inreach? Do we even think about inreach at all? What even is it? Have you ever felt let down by your church family? That you’re on mission, alone in a massive harvest while everyone else stays in the farmhouse playing games and having petty arguments? That’s a picture of estrangement in need of reconciliation. If left to run its natural course, it turns into bitterness and abandonment. Now here’s the thing: If you’re feeling abandoned by less-mission-minded Christians, I think you’re largely in the right. But you’re still responsible to help bridge that divide. I call it inreach. And you won’t reach those you don’t love, and you won’t win people over by winning arguments. This might seem mightily unfair to not only face a daunting harvest but also to love and minister to those who should be relieving you! But it was good enough for Peter, who after the Gentile Pentecost in Acts 10 goes straight into explaining and debriefing with the believers in Acts 11. It was good enough for Paul, who worked hard to connect back all his mission work with the ‘home church’. And it was good enough for Jesus, who should have been able to take Israel’s support for granted as their Messiah, but reached in to the nation that should already have been on mission to the world. So next time you sense the pain of that support-gap, don’t roll your eyes. Don’t let resentment grow. Love your church family with the patience, kindness and gentleness of the Spirit. You might be surprised how many become willing to have a go at the harvest with you.
Collaborative Community Projects - Update The Collaborative Community Projects are an exciting initiative that has been launched this year to facilitate the partnering of South Australian Baptist Churches and Baptist Care SA to effectively mitigate disadvantage and strengthen local community. The project funding aims to assist local Baptist Churches by providing resources and greater access to expertise to work with vulnerable people in their local community in a participatory, asset-based, collaborative and ongoing manner. During the first round of funding we were very pleased to have 17 South Australian Baptist churches engage with Baptist Care SA during our Thriving Communities workshops. These workshops explored what Community Development, from an asset based approach, can look like in the unique context each church finds themselves in. We worked with a number of churches in the application process and subsequently received four submissions for the first round of this project funding. These project applications came from churches who are already engaging with their local communities, have built relationships and are planning to continue to build on these to further strengthen their communities. The applications include positive initiatives such as strength-based mentoring of vulnerable children and families partnering directly with a Baptist Care SA service to provide a continuum of care by building friendships with vulnerable young people, and plans to facilitate connection between neighbours in areas of disadvantage. We look forward to announcing the successful projects soon. We continue to work with other local South Australian Baptist Churches to support them in planning projects that are uniquely suited to their individual contexts and bring out the strength of their local community as they seek to mitigate disadvantage together. A number of churches are meeting with me to discuss their plans to apply for the second round of project funding. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this opportunity.

A memory for life: Duke of Edinburgh Award students get to meet HRH Prince Edward! Two lucky individuals participating in our Duke of Edinburgh Award (DOE) program have had the chance to meet Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, during his tour of northern Adelaide during SA Youth Week. DOE participants Aria and Travis, our CEO Graham Brown and staff from our Youth, Education & Training Services watched and waited in great anticipation for His Royal Highness to grace the Twelve25 Salisbury Youth Enterprise Centre with his presence on Tuesday 17 April. Prepped with props for talking points including a backpack and photos, Aria and Travis were given the

The Queen’s youngest son visited Salisbury as part of his National tour to attend the Commonwealth Games and promote the DOE Award scheme, named after his father Prince Philip more than 60 years ago. Baptist Care SA’s DOE Award program challenges students to engage in the community, participate in physical activity and go on an adventurous journey. The program portfolio helps students learn about overcoming difficulties, building confidence and resilience, and taking responsibility for their choices.

‘My Choices’: giving peace of mind to people at the end of life It’s not easy to talk about dying. Which is why many of us never really have that conversation, adding to the stress and anxiety experienced by individuals and their families when the time approaches. But the launch of the new ‘My Choices: An A-Z of personal choices and practical preparations to facilitate end of life support’, has made it a little bit easier to make your wishes known. Former Baptist Care SA Board Chair, Allan Priest, explains that ‘My Choices’ has been a ‘wonderful fulfilment’ of a visionary dream conceived since Baptist Care SA’s withdrawal from the residential aged care sector 10 years ago. The vision was conceived through an awareness that, in the new era of consumer-directed care, people were ‘struggling to navigate practical end of life challenges’ of a size and scope beyond those that local church pastors had the resources to meet. Authored by Vicky Legge and Anne Van Loon from Baptist Care SA’s Church Support Team, “My Choices” is based on an idea conceived by retired nurse, Ineke Hillege.

The special, flexible document covers all aspects of life and death; from health, in-home support, spiritual support, financial assets, digital identity and everything in between. ‘“My Choices” is designed to help people talk about how they want to live at the end of life,’ explains Senior Project Manager, Anne van Loon. ‘It is a great tool for individuals and families, but it is also useful for service providers and churches – who have the option to use it within small groups, pastoral care activities, or as an outreach to their wider community.’ For Ineke, who was moved by the suffering that she saw during her nursing years, this resource belongs to God and she trusts that it will help preserve people’s dignity and offer peace of mind as life comes to a close.
