Good, bad or a new discipline?

With Easter fast approaching I have been pondering again the importance of the Cross. One thing I am not hearing much talk about in this context is sin. I know it’s a word we rarely use and feel uncomfortable about. It feels as if we can talk about evil: when something in the world that happens is particularly abhorrent, like a mass school shooting or relentless bombing in Syria. Or I am willing to talk about being broken: we live in a broken world and our own brokenness often means we behave in ways contrary to what God wants. But for some reason, sin is more difficult.

I think some of this dilemma is that as people involved in Church, we are perceived as judgmental, and sin feels inherently condemnatory. Therefore to use it would

Final thoughts Well, after almost 5 years, this will be my last article written as State Director SA/NT with Global Interaction. I’d like to pass on a few final thoughts here, but before I do that could I simply say ‘thankyou’ for the opportunity I have had to work with so many wonderful people and churches that are faithfully working to see the Good News of Jesus shared with the world – including the least-reached people of the world. It has been a real privilege to partner with you in this on behalf of Global Interaction.

Here are a few things I have learned (and re-learned) these past 5 years.

Firstly, God is big. Just look at the world in all its beauty and diversity, but also in its brokenness and despair: It takes a really big God to be Lord of all. And it takes a really big God to be God not just of one culture, but of all cultures. Simply amazing.

Secondly, God is gracious. The history of Christian mission is the story of people stepping out in faith, trusting, succeeding, failing, and learning as they go.

Somehow by His Spirit, God graciously draws on all of that to lead people to Himself.

Thirdly, God provides. I have heard it said recently that ‘faith begins where human power ends’. It can be hard recognising the limitations of our human power, but when we find ourselves in that place, we have no choice but to trust in God’s power and provision. And He provides time and time again.

Fourthly, God’s people – the church – are incredibly generous and inspiring. This is a reflection on what I have witnessed often as I have travelled around the Baptist Churches of South Australia and the Northern Territory. It has been a joy to see what people and churches do, the values and beliefs you hold that cause you to do those things, the faith you possess to trust yourselves to something other than yourself, and the character you have that allows you to give as you give, and serve as you serve. Thankyou.

There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God (1 Samuel 2:2).

You can keep them safe

I’m not sure that anything could have prepared me for the fierce love I experienced upon becoming an aunty for the first time.

When Rylee arrived on the scene, she brought with her a depth of emotion that had previously been unknown to me. For the past 12 months, she’s filled my world with unspeakable joy – what a miracle it is to watch her little personality grow!

But being an aunty also carries with it the weight of responsibility. As a role model in Rylee’s life, I have an opportunity to shape her for the good or for the bad. Which always leads me to think of her incredible vulnerability… and how blessed she is to have a safe home and a bright future.

It should be the same for every child. Heartbreakingly, we know that this is not always the case.

Amira was just 12 years old when poverty forced her to become a child bride.

“My family was poor,” she explains. “My parents were not able to afford us all. We were many brothers and sisters”.

Amira’s father loved her dearly. He thought that her marriage meant she would be provided for... but, really, it cost Amira her childhood.

“An unknown fear used to haunt me,” she recalls. “I could not share with anyone about my fear and worries… Coming from such a poor family, a young girl does not have much choice or environment to speak for herself”.

Then the day came when her new husband arrived to take little Amira away from her family home.

“After going to his house, I kept on crying and crying,” she remembers. “I would keep on staring at the street, hoping I may find any familiar face passing by”.

Amira begged to go back home, but it was no use. She was forced to stay in her marriage.

Even more difficult, was becoming a mother when she was still a child herself.

Sadly, Amira is not alone. She is among the 1 in 5 girls who are married by age 15 in Bangladesh, a country I have recently returned from visiting.

While I was there, I met many women who had stories like Amira’s.

Hearing them broke my heart.

As a new aunty, I want to do everything I can for my niece. I can’t imagine the hurt it would bring, to be unable protect and provide for Rylee, simply because of the situation I was born into.

But this is the unhappy reality for countless families in Bangladesh… thankfully, your generous support can change this!

Amira is now 30 years old, with four young daughters of her own.

Like her parents before her, Amira once struggled to provide for her growing family, to the point of having to pull her eldest daughter out of school.

But, today, livelihood training has given Amira extra income.

She rears hens and ducks to sell their eggs. She has goats and a cow that give her milk to sell. With the money she makes, she can keep her daughters in school… daughters who might have become child brides themselves, without the generosity of people like you!

“I do not want to marry my daughters off at an early age,” says Amira. “I do not want them to face the difficulties that I suffered”.

When you give to the Vulnerable Children Fund, you say no to child brides by helping to provide livelihoods for mums like Amira, so they can keep their precious girls in school. You also help to educate entire communities about the risks of child marriages, keeping even more daughters safe.

“Child marriage should never take place,” says Amira. “I believe a little bit of concern can stop child marriage”.

A tale of four tables

By Andrew Turner Church Development Facilitator Just as the Kerrigans at No.34 were sitting down to dinner, in that moment of silence before grace, a knock was heard at the door. Their eyes opened wide in surprise, and they looked to each other. “Did you invite anyone?” “No, were you expecting anyone?” They decided to ignore such a rude interruption and continued their dinner.

The Ridleys at No.42 had just called their kids to the table when their doorbell chimed. Jenny was still on her feet, having been beaten to the end seat by Simon. She opened the door to find Josh, the teenager from No.38. “Come in, I guess,” she stammered, and he stood in their kitchen, shifting from foot to foot. “Good thanks Mrs R,” he replied to the standard question – though the mother’s eyes said to her husband’s, “Who drops in at this time?” The awkward small-talk soon ran out, and some leftovers were put on a plate for him. He picked at them while sitting on the kitchen bench, to the Ridleys’ further annoyance.

It was after dark before the Sampsons at No.23 sat down for their meal, and they too were startled by a knock. This will make us even later. “Ruby, what a surprise,” said Mr Sampson, greeting their second-cousin from the country.

“We’re just having dinner, we can probably make room.” After an awkward sideways shuffling of chairs, plates, glasses, cutlery and Sampsons, Ruby was perched at the end corner with an almost-matching dinner set. The slightly smaller servings went politely undiscussed. “This really is a surprise, Ruby,” Mr Sampson reiterated.

“What brings you here?” “Oh, I remembered you’d said when I started uni to drop in any time. The front gate was jammed, and I see your outside light’s broken. But I just recognised the house, luckily … I guess.”

Hours earlier, at No.5, the Walters enjoyed some quick toasted sandwiches together around the kitchen bench. They’d need the energy. “OK, are we all set?” asked Janet again. “Yes Mum!” said Darryl. “I’ve got the BBQ, Susie’s on drinks, Pete’s got the playlist.” “But we’ve invited so many.

Do we have extra...” “Yes Mum, extra chairs are in the storeroom, extra meat and drinks are in the fridge. Front lights are on, letterbox balloons intact.” They rolled their eyes as they saw Mum’s motto coming. “Hospitality is making your guests feel right at home, even if you wish they were.” But they smiled, knowing that strangely, these nights were when their family was closest.

Mud, Sweat and Gears: how a simple idea reaped amazing results

A group of cycling enthusiasts named Mud, Sweat and Gears have used a simple idea to make a real difference to struggling South Australians.

The group, which originated from Blackwood Hills Baptist Church, has expanded and grown; now including members aged up to 83 years old who cycle together twice a week.

You are invited to the launch of Baptist Care SA’s resource for individuals and churches, ‘My Choices: An A-Z of personal choices and practical preparations to facilitate end of life support’. Learn how to use and have a conversation about ‘My Choices’.

After years of riding together, group leader Dean Walding suggested the cycling crew had the opportunity to do something worthwhile by raising money to help others in the community.

The funds will make a real difference to struggling locals by helping to replace old and tired kitchen facilities at the Centre, which prepares and serves 35,000 meals each year.
