2023 IMPACT REPORT Healthequity inaction
Dear friends, colleagues, and partners,
One thing that has always guided Saban Community Clinic is our respect for our shared humanity. We see every patient for who they are, not just their diagnosis or the numbers on their chart. We listen to their story. We seek to understand their lives. And, together, we focus on their individual health goals.
The care we provide comes from a place of compassion and kindness. Expanding health equity is at the heart of our work. We want to improve the quality of life of every person we encounter by meeting them where they are and giving them the personalized care they deserve. From our prenatal services and LGBTQ+ care to our groundbreaking Holistic Approach Pain Intervention (HAPI) clinic, we are delivering health services that transform lives.
Over the past year, we have strengthened our services and deepened our commitment to the work we do. Finding innovative solutions to the challenges our patients face is our priority. As we prepare to expand our services and the communities we support in the coming years, we have spent this year ensuring we have the staff, systems, and infrastructure in place for growth. I am incredibly proud of the outstanding caliber of our staff and the solid foundation we have built for the future. With your continued support, we are ready for what’s next.
With gratitude,
Muriel Nouwezem CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SHE/HER SABAN
COMMUNITY CLINIC 2023 IMPACT REPORT 01
Meeting theneeds ofour communities
Building strong connections in the communities we serve helps ensure that we have firsthand understanding of the kinds of services that can make a real difference. Through collaboration with partners and other organizations, one-on-one interactions with patients, and our mobile clinic, we have deepened our services to give more people access to outstanding care.
Our Centering Pregnancy pilot helped address disparities in maternal mortality.
The new Cal-AIM initiative has made it possible to seamlessly integrate social services into the care we provide to our patients experiencing homelessness in order to drive better outcomes.
Our HIV and sexual health clinics have expanded transgender care programs and are helping address the recent increase in STI rates.
With the expansion of Medi-Cal to all undocumented individuals in 2024, we have been educating and enrolling our patients to help ensure they are ready for the transition.
In 2023, we saw an 11% increase in patient visits, including 4,000 more behavioral health and 8,000 specialty care visits.
While we focused on strengthening our systems throughout 2023, everything we do is centered on the people we serve—the parents trying to take better care of themselves and their kids, the senior on a fixed income struggling to get their prescriptions, the young woman living in a shelter weighing the cost of preventive care with saving for a deposit on a rental. These are the lives trusted to our care. Our mission is to help more of them, in more ways, and to make health equity a reality in Los Angeles. This is our mission. Your support makes it possible.
