2021 ANNUAL REPORT Dedicated to doing more ADVANCING EQUITABLE HEALTHCARE SINCE 1967

OUR MISSION To serve as a medical home to the most vulnerable members of our community by providing affordable quality health care in a caring environment.

Dr. Tiffany Fischman, Pediatrician
SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT | 1 To be a recognized leader in improving the health and wellbeing of Los Angeles’ underserved communities by delivering quality medical and social services through innovation, creativity, partnerships, and public policy advocacy. OUR VISION

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Partners, As I reflect on the past year at Saban Community Clinic, the word that springs to mind is perseverance. While 2021 brought more of COVID’s enormous challenges, SCC has carried on through many other challenging times since we opened in 1967. And we never once lost sight of our purpose. For nearly 55 years, we’ve remained dedicated to continuously improving care for our communities. 2 | SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

In so many ways, the Clinic’s impacts ripple out to make a positive difference to the whole community.
Thank you for all you do!
Our clinics deliver life-changing benefits far beyond the services we provide to individuals. When we improve mental and physical health for mothers and fathers, they can better care for their families. Healthy people can go to work, support higher education needs, and contribute to the local economy.
While writing this letter, I tried to put myself in the shoes of my team members who choose to give everything they have – day after day – doing work that demands their all. Sometimes it honestly makes me teary-eyed to think about their passion, drive and commitment.
All year I watched team members put other people’s needs ahead of their own. They cared for patients even as their own family members were suffering, and in some cases, passing away from COVID. They found ways to carry on with compassion, empathy and grace. We are already seeing the toll it is taking on people’s mental health, but it will take years to know the full impacts of this pandemic. What I know for sure, today, is that our team was here when it mattered, showing up when our community needed us most. And of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the support of our donors, colleagues, board members, and community partners.

SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC | 2021 ANNUAL REPORT | 5 WHY IT MATTERS 89% of our patients are living below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). In 2021, the FPL was $26,500 for a family of four. Many of us can tell our employer, “I have a doctor’s appointment today.” But what if going to the doctor means losing wages you need to survive? For decades, we’ve worked to find ways to reduce wage loss for our patients experiencing poverty. With a comprehensive range of services all under one roof, we are a one-stop shop for healthcare needs. Our patients get more complete care, while saving time, money, and hassles. “It’s very rewarding to work at a clinic that’s also a teaching facility with a focus on eliminating healthcare inequities. Our weekly rheumatology clinic is staffed by specialists from Cedars-Sinai. Marisol’s Story Imagine if everyone got the help they needed to heal and thrive.
At the age of 8, Marisol’s mother left her and her brother with close friends in Guatemala to earn a better living in the U.S. She sent money to them, but the family friends squandered it all. Marisol and her brother struggled with hunger, abuse, and finally homelessness. At 12 years old, Marisol felt overwhelmed by the violence and trauma she’d experienced. She attempted to take her own life, but survived. At 18, Marisol met and married a man she thought was honest and kind. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. A year into the marriage, she welcomed her first son and hoped things would get better – but they did not. She continued to experience domestic violence, sexual assault, and mental cruelty. Her husband would often lock her in a closet and tried several times to drown her. After her second son was born, she knew she had to get away. When her husband was away for work, Marisol and her sons escaped to Los Angeles. She immediately turned themselves over to ICE, seeking asylum. Marisol was determined to give her boys, the best life she could and knew that going back to Guatemala would mean certain death. Marisol’s sister is a patient at SCC and reassured her that the Clinic was a safe space for medical and mental health care. Marisol began intensive therapy with Jose Albert and was able to start healing. She joined SCC’s Women’s Trauma Therapy group and her sons received the medical and dental care they need. Marisol enrolled her boys in school and got a work permit, which allowed her to get a restaurant job. Money is still tight, but with the help of her family she’s able to make ends meet. Jose also connected Marisol with the Clinic’s Development Department, which further assisted her struggling family by providing essentials.

Sadly, Jose Albert passed away suddenly at the beginning of the pandemic, leaving Marisol with yet another loss. But he gave her a gift of resilience that belongs to her “Sabanforever.andJose Albert saved my life,“ Marisol says. “He rebuilt my confidence and gave me the power and will to live that I needed. The Clinic has never let me down, and I’m very grateful to Saban and its donors for helping my family get to this point.”
Today, Marisol is the mother of healthy boys who are doing well in school. She has a job and is making a good life among caring family members. But getting to this point took enormous courage and commitment.

It’s rare to be able to provide these services at a community clinic and I’m thrilled that we can offer our patients this care.

I join my patient and his father in thanking you, our amazing donors, for all you do for our program and our patients!”
“Recently, I had the privilege of treating a very sweet, young patient with a right side cross bite. Unless this is corrected while the patient is still growing, it can translate to asymmetrical jaw growth and require surgical intervention.
Giving Patients Bigger Smiles
forOrthodonticsEveryone!
Thanks to the generosity of several loyal donors, SCC is proud to provide cosmetic dentistry to our patients. We launched our pilot program to make orthodontic care available to 40 pediatric patients and 20 adult patients.
Due to the generosity of our donors, I was able to treat this with an orthodontic appliance and correct the cross bite after a month of treatment! This is not a covered benefit through state insurance and the patient’s dad expressed a great amount of gratitude.

Brain Spark: Pronouns 101 was a thought-provoking and informative conversation about pronoun use. Our guest speakers, Maybe Burke, Core Trainer at The Transgender Training Institute and Kristian Melby, Physician Assistant at SCC, had an engaging discussion. They talked about what pronouns mean and why this is important for society – and for the work our Clinic does providing healthcare to the LGBTQ+ community.

Vocabulary Matters!
Our Roving Medical Team (RMT) started in the summer of 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in people experiencing homelessness on our streets. The RMT serves adults and families with children at four temporary housing sites in Hollywood and East Los Angeles. The team visits each site weekly and offers primary care visits, urgent care, vaccines, insurance enrollment, and prescription medications that our Saban Pharmacy delivers directly to each site’s residents.
Tina Perry, Friends Board Member and President at OWN, and Adam Friedman, Chief Marketing and Advancement Officer at SCC, moderated the talk and kept it lively.
“I love working with the RMT because of the relationships we build with patients. Visiting the same sites each week allows us to really get to know the residents and their families. And bringing services directly to our patients lets us reach people who otherwise might not have sought care.”
