FALL/2023 contact

Mimy Ortiz has worked in the call center for more than 13 years. She started as an appointment scheduler and a er years of dedication and promotions, is now the Call Center Manager. Mimy oversees a sta of 13 who play a key role in elding phone calls, live chats on our website, text messages and My Chart messages. Multiple channels of communication are essential to make it as easy as possible for patients to connect with the Clinic and get the information and appointments they need. “I was one of two appointment schedulers when I started,” says Mimy. “At that time, we had about 5,000 calls per month. Today our call center gets 25,000 to 30,000 calls per month.”

While the main request from callers is a medical, dental or mental health appointment, the call center sta is also elding questions regarding

medication concerns and re lls, emergency room follow ups, insurance enrollment, referral requests and so much more. “Our job is to be solution- nders for our patients. We are o en their rst line of contact and they rely on us to help coordinate their care.”

“I don’t answer calls daily, but when it’s busy I join my team,” says Mimy. “I love talking to and helping people. Every call is di erent, but o en — especially with new patients — there’s a sense of relief when they get to us. Even if it’s not something that the Clinic does, we are able to guide them, educate them and provide them with the resources they need to make informed decisions.”

B- I- NG- O A REALLY GOODTIME

The 6th annual Let’s Get Real cocktail party was hopping as more than 250 executives and producers from the unscripted, reality television industry packed SecondHome Hollywood to honor Jen O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn, Co-CEOs and Co-Founders, Velvet Hammer Media (VHM). The evening raised more than $170,000 for patient services. Thank you to Co-Chairs Hayden Meyer, David Eilenberg and Eric Hoberman for making the event such a success!

The drinks were flowing and bingo cards went flying at The Young Professional’s Drag Queen Bingo Night at Hamburger Mary’s on July 19. Hosts Bingo Boy and Borgia Bloom brought the sass, fab prizes and laughter to the more than 200 attendees that packed the house to raise money for patient services.

Pamperingnew

moms

An afternoon of pampering was just what the doctor ordered. On May 11th, we hosted our second annual Mother’s Day celebration for new moms. Patients were treated to massages, manicures and an artful flower arranging lesson. Everyone went home with a beautiful flower arrangement that they made.

Preparingforthe schoolyear

Back to school energy was lively as more than 150 patients attended our Back to School extravaganza. Kids and teenagers alike received dental screenings, vaccines and new backpacks filled with school supplies and other goodies to start the school year right. A special thanks to Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan for sponsoring the event. create

Backpacks should not weigh more than 10% of a child’s weight. Heavy backpacks can cause neck, shoulder and back pain, and can create long-term problems.

Jerome Sheldon Moss

MAY 8, 1935 – AUGUST 16, 2023

The Clinic remembers longtime friend and supporter Jerry Moss. A recording executive and co-founder of A&M records with Herb Alpert, Jerry first began supporting the Clinic in 1972 with a gi of $10,000 that literally saved the Clinic from having to close its doors. The Friends honored Jerry and Herb at their Annual Dinner Gala in 1988 and they remained Clinic supporters for decades. Friends Board Member Ellen Hoberman recalls, “Herb and Jerry were beloved. The outpouring for the Clinic Dinner was overwhelming and we had to move to the Beverly Hilton to accommodate everyone who wanted to attend.”

A&M’s roster of artists included The Police, Quincy Jones, Aaron Neville, Bryan Adams, The Carpenters, Peter Frampton, Cat Stevens, Janet Jackson, Soundgarden, Sheryl Crow, Suzanne Vega and many, many more. He will be missed.

Proud since 1967

The Saban crew was all decked out and in full force at the 2-day, Los Angeles Pride in the Park festival at LA State Historic Park. Our colorful booth engaged attendees with educational trivia, giveaways and promoted Clinic services, including a free PrEP trial (A daily pill that reduces the risk of contracting HIV by 99.7% from sex).

Our PrEP campaign is a part of the Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) efforts, a federal initiative, with the goal of reducing new HIV infections in the US by 90% by 2030. The campaign specifically targets the Latinx/Hispanic community, with information available in both English and Spanish due to the profound health disparities experienced by the Latinx/ Hispanic community.

In 2019, Latinx/Hispanic people accounted for 29% of the 36,801 new HIV diagnoses in the US. This community remains at an increased risk of acquiring HIV when compared to other groups. The lifetime risk of acquiring HIV among Latinx/Hispanic individuals is nearly 3 times higher than white individuals. The risk is even higher for Latinx/Hispanic men who have sex with men (1 in 5), even when compared to white men who have sex with men (1 in 11).

The Clinic has been part of curbing the HIV epidemic since the 80s. Our work here continues, as despite the proven high effectiveness of PrEP at preventing HIV, PrEP uptake remains low, especially among the Latinx/Hispanic community. sabanprep.com
