A Microbe Spring

Nature Commands Balance
The year started with such promise. 2020. A lovely rhythmic and poetic number. It marks the end of a decade and gazes toward the start of a new one. So many plans were made when the year was born and then began to crawl along with promise. A little microbe apparently had other plans - for the whole damn planet. Now, it’s hard to look past the viral menace unhinging the world. We don’t know how long this social distancing or sheltering in place will be required. When will it peak? How many people will be infected? How many will become seriously ill? How many fatalities? It will eventually pass, but life afterwards will be different, sober, at least for a while. Then we will rumble on. A question: Can we become more thoughtful on the human capacity to be so vicious to the planet? Ma Nature isn’t too happy about this and she sends us plenty of subtle messages, as well as a bludgeoning such as this destabilizing virus. Nature finds means to humble us, the most out of control species on the planet. Nature is constantly working to, well, naturally reestablish balance. A respect for this balance can help in the crucial work on mitigating climatic changes and the inevitable future pandemics. Personal efforts to reduce energy usage, pollution Saathee.com

and degradation of natural lands, while working to attain sustainability via technology and human ingenuity can shed light on this darkening future. Maybe a pause is also required to evaluate humans’ voracious appetite for meat, the acquisition of which has greater consequences than filling bellies. A small reduction in consumption of meat, dairy and eggs can have a huge positive effect on everything from land use, water use, energy use, climate change, and a reduction in the violence required to bring that little chunk of meat to your lunch table. This isn’t a lecture about going vegan, but a harder look is required into all the prime causes of pathogens escaping their natural hosts into unnatural arenas. Viral outbreaks can be traced to critters. A field of corn or wheat doesn’t produce deadly pathogens or viruses. Produce like lettuce doesn’t generate E-coli, it generally gets it from animal waste from nearby animal ranches, and to a lesser extent from other critter related means. The so-called wet animal markets in China, giant animal factory farms here in the US, mass degradation of fisheries in continued on page 32

We develop adaptive immunity when we’re exposed to diseases or when we’re immunized against them with vaccines. • Passive immunity: Passive immunity is “borrowed” from another source and it lasts for a short time. For example, antibodies in a mother’s breast milk give a baby temporary immunity to diseases the mother has been exposed to.
With the pandemic of COVID-19 upon us, everyone is talking about what to do to stay healthy. While there is no diet that can prevent us from getting infected from the virus, there are a few things we can do to build immunity in general.
What is immunity? The Merriam Webster dictionary defines immunity as “a condition of being able to resist a particular disease especially through preventing development of a pathogenic microorganism or by counteracting the effects of its product.”
All Diseases Begin in the Gut! Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, claimed that the gut was the seat of health and disease. Ayurveda also places emphasis on improving digestion and healthy gut. A huge proportion of our immune system is actually in our GI tract. The microorganisms that live in our gastrointestinal system (known collectively as the gut microbiome) have many important functions. We have 100 trillion or so microbes that live in various nooks and crannies of the human body. The largest colonies are in our gut. These beneficial bacteria within the body have an enormous influence on our metabolism, our hormones, and our genetic makeup. These microbes help us get the nutrients from our food, help balance our mood, sharpen our focus, and help build our
How does our Immune system work? Our immune system is made up of various organs, cells and proteins, and is designed to fight harmful things that enter our body from the outside or harmful changes that occur inside our body.
The main tasks of the body’s immune system are: • Fight disease-causing germs (pathogens) like bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi, and to remove them from the body, • Recognize and neutralize harmful substances from the environment, and • Fight disease-causing changes in the body, such as cancer cells. When the body senses foreign substances (called antigens), the immune system works to recognize the antigens and get rid of them.

Film Clips Akshay Kumar Donates Rs 1.5 Crores for Transgender Home

The Personal History of David Copperfield Actor Akshay Kumar has donated Rs 1.5 crores to help build a home for transgender people in Chennai. Kumar, who will play the role of a transgender in the upcoming film Laxmmi Bomb, made the donation to the film’s director Raghava Lawrence after being inspired by his work with his own foundation, The Lawrence Charitable Trust, which has been initiating various projects for education and homes for children. Kumar has raised awareness for many communities, including raising funds for the families of martyred soldiers. Kumar has three films lined up for 2020. The actor will next be seen in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe saga Sooryavanshi, followed by horror-comedy Laxmmi Bomb and he will be ending the year with historical drama Prithviraj based on the heroic Prithviraj Chauhan.

KGF Chapter 1 marked Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment’s first Kannada venture and now, the production house will again be associated with the mega project KGF Chapter 2, which is now scheduled for release on October 23. The first film’s star Yash has been prepping hard action scenes while the filmmakers have announced that veteran actress Raveena Tandon will be joining the cast. The Coronavirus pandemic has claimed many lives around the world. Many countries have shut down schools, cancelled tours, and postponed movies and tours. Salman Khan was to head abroad for his annual tour. Now, the US and Canada tour have been put on hold. Khan was to perform in April in several US cities, but the current situation under consideration, the shows have been cancelled. Organizers will announce new dates soon. Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan has also decided to halt his travel plans. He was heading for a nine-day tour to the US but has now postponed his tour and will announce new dates in the near future.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt’s film Torbaaz, which has been in the making for two and a half years is finally gearing up for release. Producer Rahul Mittra told an interviewer that this is the worst time to even think about releasing a film as all the movies are being pushed due to the coronavirus scare. Fist bumps and high fives are still cool, if they stop short of making physical contact. Imagine an air guitar version of the high five, stopping a few inches short of making contact. This brings us back to Namaste. A handshake is a physical connection, Namaste is the same thing but a connection with yourself as well as with the other via a mutual agreement. It feels warmer. All other non-contact gestures are cool, but are singular, whereas Namaste seems plural, equal, still giving the sensation of warmth of human touch. With social distancing a global phenomenon, the allpurpose handshake is on its death throes. Good riddance. Goodbye handshake and hello Namaste.

An unnatural comingling of different animals in wet markets or stacking huge numbers of others in factory farms simply creates unnatural responses from nature. It would behoove humans to move back toward more humane, natural and sustainable way to raise meat while eating less of it. Arguably this one action, and it’s not some great sacrifice, would help mitigate global menaces like climate change and pandemics. Put up firewalls for pathogens seeking to jump species, from their natural hosts into others, if you will. Once this is over, we must gather our global lessons and prep for such future calamities on all fronts. We must assume that somewhere inside a bat hanging in a cave in China or elsewhere in the world, maybe in the belly of a monkey or some exotic animal, a pathogen exponentially more sinister than Covid-19 is likely waiting. It is biding its time, for its opportunity to mutate, jump species, into the most widely spread species of all, us. Mother Nature has fired her most potent warning shot, we ignore all the possible causes of this, and potential solutions, at our own peril. A global scientific and medical effort will need to be put in place, along with worldwide connected outbreak response teams, so that local outbreaks don’t become pandemics. In the future, immediate response to any regional outbreaks should be the norm. In the meantime, we must reflect on our own actions that unbalance nature and make outbreaks possible.
Joe Biden, Man of the Moment
It’s not over yet, but the voters have spoken. The Democratic primaries will roll on, in some form of postponed or other capacities, but Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee. I think Bernie Sanders should remain in the race till the end. This way there is no complaint hardcore Bernie supporters can make that the nomination was stolen from him. The DNC ran a fair and square nominating process, which began with the most diverse lineup of candidates ever. Bernie Sanders has been fighting for the working people for years, but simply couldn’t close the deal. He has made “Medicare for All (MFA)” his mantra for years, but never convinced most voters how he would accomplish it. Biden can further the idea of MFA. Now, if he wins, Obamacare can be solidified further, turning it into a major building block toward a unified, sustainable, financially prudent and fair healthcare system for all. This can happen, and the private sector must also be a partner, just as in Medicare. Joe Biden, with his gaffes, his occasional forgetfulness, persevered over all the others, as voters are seeking a sense of experience and, yes, normalcy, and a check on the most divisive president in recent times. Joe Biden’s job is simplified, show steadiness and unite the different factions of the Democrats. The main group he really needs to work on, angry young Bernie supporters. The virus also has laid bare the basic wish of most voters, a return to normalcy for now, revolution, well, maybe later. Now with this microbial bug unhinging the country and the globe, the election and electioneering have been put into an adjust for the moment mode. The nominating for the Democratic candidate began with most diverse lineup of candidates, but in the end folks are settling for the familiar. If the former Vice President can gather the Obama coalition again and bring a few Republicans dispirited with Trump into his fold as extra measure, he will be sitting in the Oval office in late January next year. It won’t be easy. Trump remains a formidable foe and is also running as an incumbent. The last three Trump predecessors were two termers. Trump has the power of incumbency working for him, but his brashness has been subdued by the unforeseen invisible menace. This is human reality, not reality TV.
Bye Handshake. Hello Namaste
Goodbye handshake. It was nice knowing you. I never did like you. The handshake must be relegated to the ash heaps of history. Now with a virus making even the most dedicated hand shakers hesitant, it’s time to make other non-contact forms of greetings the norm. I’m partial to the ancient Indian greeting of Namaste. It is respectful, gets the point across and is universal in its palms touching and prayerlike simplicity. Of course, bowing also works, as used in Japanese and other cultures. But bowing seems to give deference to royalty, as when you are supposed to bow or curtsy to some royal figure. The Vulcan greeting is wonderful for geeks of the world. There are also thumbs up, the devil fingers, the shaka sign, the finger gun, and the peace sign, among others. All beat the heck out of shaking hands. Deals used to be made with handshakes, now they can be executed with one’s favorite non-contact connection. Handshakes were never equal as someone with a bigger and stronger hand almost always squeezes the other hand too hard. An extra firm handshake evokes domination. The best outcome of dumping shaking hands; we will in turn minimize the prime mode of germ transfer of colds and flu, and current and future viruses. Saathee.com

According to historians, the Tamil language first established in Kanyakumari (also spelled Kanniyakumari). It is the southernmost town in mainland India, sometimes referred to as “the Land’s End.” A popular tourist destination in India, the southernmost tip is also known as Cape Comorin and is world famous for its unique ocean sunrises and moonrises. Key West is the southernmost city in the contiguous United States and the westernmost island connected by highway in the Florida Keys. The beautiful town lies at the southernmost end of U.S. Route 1, the longest north–south road in the United States. Key West is the county seat of Monroe County which includes all of the Florida Keys. Key West served as President Harry S. Truman’s Winter White House. Disinformation-spewing online bots and trolls from halfway around the world are continuing to shape local and national debates by spreading lies online on a massive scale. In 2019, Russia used Facebook to intervene in the internal politics of eight African nations. Russia has a long history of using disinformation campaigns to undermine opponents – even hoodwinking CBS News anchor Dan Rather back in 1987 into saying that U.S. biological warfare experiments sparked the AIDS epidemic. One group of researchers identified Russian interference in 27 elections around the world, from 1991 to 2017. It interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections, reaching more than 126 million Americans on Facebook alone. Russia is almost certainly already doing so again in 2020. But Russia is not alone: From the end of World War II to the year 2000, scholars have documented 116 attempts to influence elections – 80 of them by the United States. Nations around the world, including the United States, have to decide how to react. There is no shortage of experimentation, with new laws and codes of conduct, and even efforts to cut off internet access entirely – and that was before misinformation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. As a scholar of cybersecurity policy, I have been reviewing the efforts of nations around the world to protect their citizens from foreign interference, while protecting free speech, an example of which is being published by the Washington and Lee Law Review. There is no perfect approach, given the different cultural and legal traditions in play. But there’s plenty to learn and use to diminish outsiders’ ability to hack U.S. democracy.
Europe The European Union has been a target of Russian efforts to undermine stability and trust in democratic institutions including elections across Europe. Saathee.com
Disinformation was rampant across Europe in 2019, including in the Netherlands and the U.K., prompting the closing of far-right Facebook groups for spreading “fake news and polarizing content.” This has been repeated elsewhere in Europe, such as Spain, where Facebook – again under pressure from the authorities and civil society groups – closed down far-right groups’ Facebook pages days ahead of their parliamentary elections in April 2019. The disinformation efforts go beyond Facebook and manipulated Twitter feeds, when Twitter handles are renamed by hackers to mislead followers. A growing aspect of multiple disinformation is how artificial intelligence can create manipulated videos that look real, which are called deepfakes. Not all of this interference is foreign, though – political parties across Europe and around the world are learning disinformation tactics and are deploying it in their own countries to meet their own goals. Both the Labour and Conservative parties in the U.K. engaged in these tactics in late 2019, for example. In response, the EU is spending more money on combating disinformation across the board by hiring new staff with expertise in data mining and analytics to respond to complaints and proactively detect disinformation. It is working to get member countries to share information more readily, and has built a system that provides nations with real-time alerts of disinformation campaigns. It is unclear if the U.K. will be participating in these activities post-Brexit. The EU also seems to be losing patience with Silicon Valley. It pressured social media giants like Facebook, Google and Twitter to sign the Code of Practice on Disinformation in 2018. This initiative is the first time that the tech industry has agreed “to self-regulatory standards to fight disinformation.” Among other provisions, the code requires signatories to cull fake accounts, and to report monthly on their efforts to increase transparency for political ads.

Reflections and a few confessions as an Indian American in the Carolinas

On a day in February, when my biggest challenge was to carve out enough time to drive to the local Indian store 30 miles away to stock up on basmati rice and dal, I heard about a fatal new virus consuming lives in China and infiltrating numerous other countries. After listening to the radio, sifting the internet for reasonably “unfake” news and reviewing multiple text messages, I got a vague understanding of what was going on. The remarkably sad situation was and continues to be a reminder about the unpredictability of life. At that moment, however, all I wanted to do was get to the store before closing time. Neither denial nor indifference had anything to do with my priority, instead it was being pragmatic. News and more accurately, our own reaction to the various sources of information, reminds us about our personal anxieties that lurk beneath the surface of our smiles and cheerful posts on social media. My vivid imagination, which serves as a blessing when I am reading a sci-fi or historical novel, became a curse as positive cases were detected closer and closer to home. Unbridled, my mind galloped into dark territories. A few days later, I worried about our maid who was determined to embark on her first cruise to the Bahamas. My worry turned into alarm when she returned from her trip and called to say that the scheduled cleaning at my house would be delayed as she was sick with the flu. Flu, was it really flu? What if it was ….I declined to use the dreaded C word. We wake up on most days with incredible optimism continuing our routine lives by driving to work, finishing chores, going for a swim, or catching the latest movie in the theater. We place faith in planes, cars, elevators, gyms, and so on even though there is a potential threat to our health and safety in each one of those things. Approximately 40,000 fatal Saathee.com
car accidents occur every year in the US, yet the nagging fear about getting behind the wheel is low. So, what is it about the… okay, I’ll say it, Corona virus that is fueling everything from lame jokes to panic buying? Political debates, uncertainties following the primaries, even the devastation from the tornadoes in Nashville, moved to the sidelines as COVID-19 became the focal point of our lives. Fear of the unknown is probably bigger than qualms about your least favorite candidate winning the election. Partisan feuds among family members have been replaced by arguments about the best home remedy for the disease and creative minds are squandering their talent by inventing conspiracy theories. Amidst the chaos, researchers and healthcare workers are in a tough race against time as they attempt to contain the disease and produce a vaccine. Let’s keep our fingers crossed in the hope that today’s solutions do not sow the seeds of tomorrow’s problems. In a crisis, the world could use foresight but unfortunately, we lack a crystal ball. If we knew how our actions will play out in the future, we could in theory allay our fears to make the best choices. My family would skip specific gatherings if we knew the location of dangerous bacteria or viruses. If only those troublemakers were visible to the naked eye. The microscopic nature of disease-causing organisms increases their chances of survival but lowers ours. In today’s global economy, we share continued on page 97

that my father used to export. He gave them the impression that he owned that business which certainly impressed his wouldbe in-laws. We went along with his staged show allowing him his moments of glory. He certainly earned it. It has been over 30 years since Bankay left us. After he got married, he moved out to be with his wife and became a balloon seller. He would visit us often, teaching the other helpers who replaced him. Years later we learnt that he had an accident and passed away. A few years after that, after my mother also passed away, my father lived alone in India for over 25 years. He had four helpers taking care of him, two for cooking and cleaning, a third one for shopping, and a fourth one to deal with relatives, friends and telemarketers! Surrounded by a dedicated staff of four people, my father had been spoiled. Several years back, when he would visit us from India, my wife and I would get exhausted taking care of him. He would command us, “Take these cashew nuts away. Why is this cup sitting here? Go and warm this tea again.” At the end of the day my wife and I would be running around taking care of all his errands. We jokingly told him that next time he visited, he should bring a couple of people along –- like in the movie, “Coming to America” when Eddie Murphy’s father, the king, visits him from Africa! He brought a whole entourage but we could have at least used a Bankay. When I would visit my father in India, I would treat myself with the luxury for a couple of weeks. I stopped carrying my luggage from the gate to the bedroom up two flights of stairs. I would leave the dishes on the dining table and I would let the guardsman open the door to the cab. I would justify my conscience thinking if I did the work myself, I would be taking away work from these helpers. I remember a few years ago, I was working on a proposal while visiting my father in New Delhi. The mosquitoes were incessantly biting and despite the insect repellant and the fan, they wouldn’t stop. I decided to get rid of the insects with a battery-operated tennis-like bat but it was taking me away from work. Finally, I decided to get one of the helpers to hover around me, zapping the insects while I worked on my laptop. Now that is true luxury! Bankay never knew how to drive. He didn’t need to learn because growing up, we didn’t have a car. When my father moved back to India, along with a car, he got a dedicated driver who would drive him around. When I would visit India, he would take me wherever I needed to go. He was very knowledgeable and knew his way around Delhi and the sprawling suburbs very well. I would engage him in long conversations about the weather, news and politics which he enjoyed. However, he appreciated the respect I gave him by sitting next to him rather than sitting in the back seat by myself. It felt more like riding with a friend than a worker. Social interaction between the helpers and my kids was a challenge in the beginning. When my kids were young, on their visits to India, they would touch the feet of the cleaning lady in a show of respect. We found it amusing but hard to explain the ingrained mores of the class interaction in the Indian society to our American-born kids. If my kids had met Bankay, I would

I grew up in India. We had a garage door opener. It had voice recognition. It had facial recognition. It had intruder detection. His name was Bankay Lal. He didn’t need electricity. He was powered by lentils, roti and rice. He was our cook, our guardsman and our babysitter. Since my father extensively traveled overseas for long periods of time because of his export-import business, my brother and I were practically raised in a single-parent household. My mother was a high school Economics teacher so when she was working, Bankay took care of us. He was about 4’10” tall so even as kids we saw eye to eye with him. He used to work for my mother prior to her marriage while she was working in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, called Barabanki. When my mother got married and moved to Delhi, Bankay accompanied her. We used to tease him that he was part of our mother’s dowry. Bankay had thick shiny hair. He would put a lot of mustard oil in his hair; a cheaper, more natural alternative to the modern day hair gel. He would comb his hair parted in the middle, resembling Kishore Kumar, a popular Hindi movie actor from the 60’s. Bankay certainly used to act like him, sometimes silly, sometimes serious and sometimes clownish. Like Kishore Kumar in the Hindi movie Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, he would shake his head and make his eyebrows dance, hoping to attract the Madhu Bala of his dreams. One day when we were in our early teens, my brother and I were wrestling against him. He fell down and lay on the ground for a few minutes hiding his face. When we saw his face, we thought he was laughing but it turned out he was crying. His laughing and crying were the same. It was a unique talent of his. I don’t know if it was a talent he cultivated on purpose but as kids, we used it to make fun of him. Bankay was more than a helper or a butler. He was an integral part of our family. He certainly acted like the head of the household. The visitors would often be confused with his polite but confident demeanor. At my brother’s wedding, he wore a pink turban designated for close family members. Many people thought he was our father and kept touching his feet which further boosted his ego. Finding Enlightenment: The Beauty Found within Modern Video Games

As mentioned in last month’s article, I have been a fan of video games for quite a long time. While my enjoyment initially started with plucking a few quarters in each time to attack or avoid the various 8-bit beastie that was coming to attack my own tiny protagonist. Other times I’d have both hands on each side of the pinball machine as my fingers frantically clicked the flippers to keep that shiny ball in play. Back in those days we didn’t really look at the art as much as we were just looking to rack up a high score, so the thought of video games as anything other than short term entertainment to pass the time was unheard of. But the real question is… could you see video games beautiful enough to be considered Art? Now I know that we’ve always had art in the form of pinball machines since they were first created. I’ll admit that it was always quite a draw to see a pinball game with an intrinsically printed design. Later on, the games became more advanced with LED score panels that often displayed pixel graphics associated with the machine. While the cabinets for pinball machines have always been marvelous to observe and enjoy, I wish to instead talk about the narrative beauty within on-screen games. The first photorealistic game that I clearly remember was Myst, first released in 1993. It utilized a very simple story where you play an unseen protagonist who must solve puzzles in Saathee.com

order to link various worlds together and help uncover the history of an ancient civilization. The technique used to shift the player from scene to scene was pretty innovative at the time as it was also one of the very first computer games on CD-ROM. The graphics and soundtrack are both still extremely impressive even today. Myst and its sequels are still enjoyable games if you like puzzles and they can now be played on mobile devices. From there games started coming out that had more complex stories. The first game that I distinctly remember the story was 1995’s Chrono Trigger. You as the protagonist meet up with various NPCS who join your party and over time you get to know each of them as not only your comrades in battle but also as good friends. This was also one of the first games to have multiple endings, and trust me when I say that I got so emotionally invested in the characters that I cried with each ending I experienced. Fast forward to 2003, and a new Star Wars game was continued on page 97

Fondness for Flora: Desis and Gardening
Springtime puts a spring in one’s step! Tree branches, once barren, now radiate with yellow and pink buds. Birds are chirping as they make nests and fluffy bunnies bounce behind their mother. People relax on porches and patios after winter months and take pleasure in nature’s beautiful display. It’s the time of year when gardening enthusiasts, and novices, purchase seeds and plants. While gardening is one of the most popular hobbies in the United States, with some estimates showing as much as 77 percent of households dabbling in some form of the pastime, one must admit Desis have their own style and preferences. Flowers are beloved by the community which prizes beauty, fragrance and color. This is illustrated by many examples within South Asia: women decorate their hair with a string of flowers, marigolds adorn an idol or a blanket of blooms is placed upon a saint’s tomb, and a home wrapped in garlands is sure to be a space where a wedding is to take place. Rose syrup blended with cold water refreshes as the temperatures start to rise. You might even know a Desi with a floral name such as Juhi, Roja, Jasmine and even Gulshan, which means flower garden and Bahar which means Spring. Countless poems across languages celebrate the joy of brilliant blossoms and the calming effect of gorgeous greenery. South Asian communities are also rich with practical botanical knowledge and there are plenty of Aunties and Uncles who know which herb will cure a stomach ailment and which leaves, when chewed, can ease nausea. For many Desis residing in American suburbs, enjoying the great outdoors often means a jaunt to local plant nurseries and/or hardware stores. It is easy to see the community is partial towards certain vegetation with the rose emerging a clear winner. Jasmine variants can be found in shopping carts, as well. Vegetable gardens are also prized amongst South Asians. For decades my family has shopped at Chinese grocery stores Saathee.com
as the grocers have carried vegetables also found in India, such as a bitter gourd, taro root and daikon radish. From the same store we would purchase packets of seeds for vegetables such as Japanese eggplant and would start a garden in the Spring. When family friends visit our home, the elders would give a tour of the garden which gently reminded visitors of a different time and place. If a plotted garden is seen as too time consuming, many South Asian families enjoy dedicating windowsill or patio space to an herb garden comprising of plants such as mint, fenugreek and curry leaves. These greens don’t need constant care and attention and there is much satisfaction in plucking fresh leaves, smelling their aroma and using it in a dish. Hope springs eternal for some when it comes to growing plants native to the Motherland such as banana and even mango. Bananas can thrive in places like Florida, but I have yet to see a mango tree in America. I have, though, seen attempts made by Uncles who feel the right amount of devotion will get a fresh mango seed to sprout. While taking care of potted plants is often done with relative ease by Desis, lawn care is a different story. In India, one has either farmland and/or orchards in rural areas or potted plants in urban spaces. The vast majority of homes in Indian cities and towns do not have a lawn, thus secrets related to a crisp, emerald green front yard is something neither passed down or even coveted. In American suburbia, grass of the right hue and height must be regularly maintained with watering, mowing, edging, fertilizing and aeration. Potted plants aren’t scrutinized the way a front yard is and the owners of an unkempt lawn are often judged as being, well, unkempt! Recent droughts, especially in the state of California, made people examine whether the water-guzzling patch of land can be put to much better use. Fancifully designed rock and cactus gardens began popping up along the West Coast to lessen water usage and when regulation on water consumption eased, more people planted organic vegetables gardens where mowers once marched. Cultural preferences aside, gardening provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and others. I got my green thumb from my Nani (maternal grandmother) who had a fondness for plants, especially tulsi, or holy basil. When we would garden together, she would share stories from her life while providing me with instructions on how to make roots less compact so they can soak up nutrients. But not all the seeds we planted saw the sun, and some buds that were getting ready to blossom suddenly fell to the ground, and a few flowers were eaten by a bunny that was adorable before we caught it nibbling on our hard work. Whenever I would feel disappointed by such occurrences my Nani would soothe my sadness by saying, “It’s no big thing. You can plant again!” Understanding the temporary nature of everything, feeling hopeful for the next season and having gratitude for growth in the present are some of the valuable lessons gardening can teach.

College Admissions Insider SAT Subject Tests are designed to test your knowledge in one particular subject, like physics, calculus, chemistry, or a foreign language. Altogether, there are 21 different subject areas you can decide to take. Here are four reasons why you should take the SAT Subject Tests.

How The Coronavirus Is Affecting The SAT
1. Some Colleges Require It The SAT Subject Tests aren’t always optional: MIT requires that their students take at least two SAT Subject Tests to be considered for admission. Other colleges, like Carnegie Mellon University and Emory University, recommend that you take them. You don’t want to be at a disadvantage if other applicants in the pool are submitting SAT Subject Tests. When creating your college list, check to see if the schools require or recommend that you take these tests so you can plan accordingly.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, more and more countries have been affected. Now recognized as a pandemic by WHO, the disease has had some unexpected effects, including on students’ preparations for college. Students worldwide have been left frustrated when the ACT and the College Board (the administrator of the SAT) closed test sites in February, March, April, and May. The College Board canceled tests in more than 15 countries impacted by COVID19, including China, Italy, and South Korea. The ACT was shut down in China for the February 7 and 8 test. As the situation continues to progress in the United States, the ACT made the decision to postpone the April 4 test in the United States to June 13. The ACT will continue to monitor the outbreak and might close more sites and reschedule more dates if required. More than 120 US testing sites for the March 14 SAT were also canceled, with little to no notice sent to the students who spent months preparing for the critical test. Another recent statement from the College Board revealed that the May 2 SAT test date would be completely canceled. While students are given the option to take the test at an upcoming date at no additional charge, that might be months after they finished their test prep course. At this time, it is unclear how these closures will affect students taking the exams, or if more SAT and ACT sites will be closed in the upcoming months. Students should check their emails and the official ACT and College Board websites to get more information on cancellations and rescheduling of their exams. The NACAC (National Association of College Admissions Counseling) has encouraged universities to be more lenient and flexible with their admission deadlines for the upcoming admission cycle. However, higher education institutions will not be required to follow this recommendation. If you have been affected by COVID-19, you should reach out to the universities directly. For those students who are unable to take the exam, considering test-optional universities might be a good solution. These types of universities don’t require their students to submit an SAT or ACT score when applying. However, international students will still need to prove their English language proficiency through the IELTS or TOEFL exams. It is clear COVID-19 is going to continue to have serious repercussions on the world. How large of an impact it has on students applying to US universities in 2020 remains to be seen.
2. Showcase Your Strengths Unlike the SAT or ACT, where you can’t control what you are tested on, the SAT Subject Tests let you choose the subjects you want to take. Whether you love chemistry, literature, or French, there is an SAT Subject Test you can take that lets you showcase your interest in the subject matter. Even if the university doesn’t require that you take an SAT Subject Test, it can be a great way to distinguish yourself and establish yourself as a top candidate for admission.
3. Display Interest In A Major If you already have decided on a college major, a corresponding SAT Subject Test can help to prove your interest in the subject and show how you are qualified to handle the college-level course material. For example, if you are planning on majoring in a STEM field, you might want to consider taking a Subject Test in physics or chemistry to prove your skills.
4. Help With College Course Placement While you don’t get college credit for a high SAT Subject Test score, it does help with college course placement. At Harvard University, the SAT Subject Tests can be used to pass language requirements so long as you get a 700 or better. However, even if you haven’t taken the SAT Subject Tests, Harvard will accept a Higher Level IB language exam or a 5 on an AP language exam to help you place in a more advanced language course. And even if you didn’t take or couldn’t financially afford the tests, you can take a placement test when you arrive at Harvard as well.
Don’t think of SAT Subject Tests as just another test you need to take to get into college. Instead, consider them an opportunity to add variety and depth to your college application. For some, the SAT Subject Tests are another important piece of the college admission process.

And then, just as suddenly as it all started, there is a lull. You find yourself in the eye of the storm, and have a few moments to think.
Corona! I Say “Calm!”
“To accustom the infant to get out of its own difficulties or to calm it by rocking, it may be to lay the foundations of a good or of a bad disposition.” ~Jean Piaget
The title of this article is a deliberate play on words across languages. These syllables spoken to a Hindi-speaker’s ear would be heard as an exhortation to not do something. To everyone else, this will sound like a call to calmness during these anxiety-ridden times. The two ideas may not be unrelated. When the world turns upside down, it is hard to act in a calm and measured manner. Even more importantly, it is hard to not act in some way, even if such action could be detrimental. Somehow, action has come to have a strongly positive connotation while inaction is seen as lethargic, even recklessly uncaring. But is this always the case? Are our errors of omission always worse than our errors of commission? Is there anything that we have ever said or done that, in retrospect, we wish we hadn’t? And have we not ever seen anyone who has shown selfrestraint under difficult circumstances, watching calmly and patiently, waiting for unexpected stormy waters to subside on their own?
The calm before the storm We are sense-driven creatures: When things impinge upon our senses, we react in some way. Our system is always ready to receive signal. Some things that come in are considered signal, and some are quickly discarded as noise. But what is signal and what is noise depends on the state of the system. If the system is in a calm and dispassionate state, it processes events as they stream in, picking this one out as signal, tossing that one quickly out as noise, and so on. Things that are classified as signal are examined more closely to determine if some action is required. This works pretty well. Until it doesn’t.
The storm There are times, such as the present time, when something large and ominous suddenly manifests itself, and sends a signal unlike anything else that we may have experienced up until that point. You find yourself starting to get drawn into what feels like a swirling vortex that you don’t have any control over. The system that is “you” transitions into a very different state from what existed just yesterday. You are fixated on every event that ripples through to you, and on every bit of information that comes hurtling toward you. You are no longer methodically and thoughtfully culling signal from noise and putting them into neat prioritized piles. As it comes fast and mercilessly at you, you are now dealing with a world that seems an order of magnitude larger and more complex than it used to be. The juggler who was smiling at an indulgent audience and juggling two apples and an orange is now sweating profusely, trying to catch as many as possible, of the wild things that are rushing at him. No time to juggle anymore, as things fall down left, right and center. No time for smiling, and no time to be entertaining audiences. It is a grim business, for one of these hurtling objects could be the end of it all. Saathee.com

The I of the storm Beaten down by the power of the thing, you are compelled to accept its dominance in its current incarnation. You are forced to look elsewhere. But where? What else is there? Who else is there? “Of course!” you say to yourself, slapping yourself on the forehead. “I am there. Maybe I can do something with this thing that I call ‘me’”?” You realize that you cannot play this game at the scale that is demanded by the magnitude of the thing. You have to change the rules of the game, and you realize that you can do this – that it is your game. In your moment of clarity, you see that in this game, you are small and the thing is big. You cannot scale up; so you have to scale the thing down. Fortunately, not everything is equal. There are some aspects of the thing that are more important than other aspects. So you decide to prioritize – radically prioritize. You see that there are three hundred parts to the thing, but you are a mere three-object juggler. So you decide to apply your limited capacity not to dealing with all three hundred parts, but to the three most important ones of those. You are calm again, and have pulled yourself to familiar ground once again. You can juggle three things at a time! You wait, for the eye of the storm to go through, and are ready to face the brunt of it again. This time, you’ll be ready. You have decided to deal with what you are capable of dealing with, leaving all else to Mother Nature’s whims. At least they will be her whims, not yours! Corona is just a metaphor here. There are many coronas in our lives, some of which come closer to us than this one. “Do I find the right balance of action and inaction, passion and calm, in heroism versus self-restraint?” That is the question. Even more importantly, “Do I cultivate calmness as a core habit?”

In response, these firms have set up “searchable political-ad databases” and have begun to take down “disruptive, misleading or false” information from their platforms. But the code is not binding, and naming and shaming violators does not guarantee better behavior in the future. At the national level, France has taken a leading role in taxing tech giants to reign in the power of tech firms including how they are used to spread disinformation, prompting threats of retaliatory tariffs from the Trump administration. But this may just be a “warmup” to more ambitious actions designed to help protect both competition and democracy.
Asia Democracies across Asia are also dealing with disinformation. In Indonesia, for example, President Joko Widodo spearheaded the creation of the new National Cyber and Encryption Agency to combat disinformation in their elections. One example was in June 2019, when a member of the Muslim Cyber Army was arrested in Java for posting misinformation that implied that the Indonesian government was being controlled by China. Like Indonesia, Malaysia has also criminalized the sharing of misinformation. Myanmar and Thailand have leaned on law enforcement actions by arresting people who they argue are behind disinformation campaigns to curtail misinformation, which have been abused in some cases to silence critics of public corruption. The problem of disinformation in India is so severe that it has been likened by some commentators to a public health crisis. One Microsoft study, for example, found that 64 percent of Indians encountered disinformation online in 2019, which was the highest proportion among 22 surveyed countries. Not only have these incidents affected elections in India such as by spreading false information about candidates on WhatsApp, but they have led to real-world harm, including at least 33 deaths and 69 instances of mob violence following kidnapping allegations. In response, the Indian government has shut down the internet more than 100 times over the past year, and has proposed laws that would give it largely unchecked surveillance powers, mirroring Chinese-style internet censorship.
exploit domestic divisions like inequality and injustice. This is a global issue, demanding action from both advanced and emerging democracies. The U.S., for example, could take a wider view of combating disinformation, featuring three parts. First, more integration of disparate efforts is vital. That does not mean establishing an independent agency (as in Indonesia), for example, or focusing tenaciously on censorship and surveillance (as in India), but it could mean the current Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department investigations into tech giants including Facebook should include disinformation as one focus. Second, social media firms – including Facebook – could agree to comply by the EU Code for Disinformation globally, as some are already doing with the EU’s data privacy regulations. Third, media literacy and education is imperative to help inoculate citizens against disinformation. Educational reforms are urgently needed to help students recognize disinformation when they see it, a topic all the more important given the rise of deepfakes. In short, by working together and taking these threats seriously, we might even be able to find a way that – despite the challenges – democracy can persist even in a hyperconnected future.

There are many court cases that can be reviewed. But the gist of most of them is the same. Money is borrowed from the Plan accounts, then the person leaves the job or something else happens and the loan goes into default which forces the plan to treat the balance of the loan as withdrawal and not borrowed money and hence taxes and penalty become due immediately. A 1099R gets issued at the end of the year and it becomes very unpleasant from that point on. Anyone thinking of borrowing from the plan should be well aware of the fact that it should be done only as a last resort and it should not be the first thing that comes to mind. To be sure there are many other alternatives available, may be not as attractive as borrowing from the Plan (but certainly not as devastating either) and they all need to be considered first. Also keep in mind that the retirement money not only should be cherished and protected properly, but should never be touched for such purposes. Even if you are able to follow the plan and repay back every penny with interest, you are certainly impeding the growth of that account for that period and that effect can compound over time. Three points to be taken away from this: Plan loans should be the absolute last resort, if at all. I don’t know anyone who will advance you a loan for your retirement but for the purpose you may be borrowing from the Plan there may be many willing to lend. Always check the details of the 401k or IRA plan. This is some thing we hardly ever do at our own detriment and then we get surprised when it is pointed out by the officials. If the language is not something that is easy to understand then you need to get help from the company officials who should spend time with you until it is clear. It is really in the interest of both parties. Do not rely on the general inferences made by the HR person or plan representative. Such statements do not hold up in court in the face of the statements made in the official plan communication and that you may have signed. Plans that are created by IRS, under the jurisdiction of the Law passed by Congress, can be rather rigid with not much room for negotiations whereas borrowed money at other places there could be. There is no substitution for proper long-term planning which would consider all future events that are important to you and your family and create a spike of cash for those events. Thinking of Borrowing from Your Retirement Accounts? Think Twice Before You Act
We see our retirement accounts (401k, IRAs) grow and it delights us. Sometimes they grow even faster than our regular savings, primarily because of a variety of reasons like company contributions, well placed investments and others. It is a source of pleasure and always good to know that we can bank on these for our retirements. Therein lays the dilemma: these accounts are meant for one purpose and only one purpose, which is supporting our retirement. But the temptations are always there. Such a large cache is sitting there and all of a sudden we see a need coming up (like sudden illness, wedding, car purchase, special occasions, even college education) and we are thinking maybe we can tap into that account temporarily to satisfy the need. At first blush, taking out a “Plan loan” can sound like easy tax-free money. The thinking in the back of our heads is there is plenty of time to pay it back and make up the deficit after borrowing. Think again. Let us first explore under what circumstances it is even possible to borrow from such accounts (plans). The rules are tricky and violations can trigger costly taxes and penalties. We need to understand Plan loan rules. These are precisely the rules we generally don’t pay much attention to since we had always resolved that we were never going to touch it and borrow from these funds when we started the contributions to the program. The advantages to tap into such plans can be initially seductive. For one thing they are just sitting there with easy access. Loans are generally easier to obtain than other bank financing. Poor credit does not factor into approval process. They are initially tax-free and penalty-free and can continue to be so if all the conditions are met. They certainly have lower interest rates than loans available elsewhere like on the open market. They require repayment back to the original account and not to a bank. Optional loan provisions can always be adopted. But stop. There are conditions that must be met for this preferential tax treatment. For sure, every 401k or IRA plan has its own rules and the plan conditions must be met. Loans are limited to a maximum amount decided by how much you have saved in your plan. Tax code permits or limits plan loans to the lesser of 50 percent of the vested account or $50,000 max. The repayment period must fall within the statutory period and repayment must be made on at least a quarterly basis. And of course interest will be assessed on the repayments. A loan against a 401k (or IRA for that matter) may seem particularly attractive but it can cause tax problems if not handled precisely; tax problems come into play when the repayment rules are not carefully followed. Inheriting IRAs Can be Full of Traps By Mo Vidwans
in December 2019 (called SECURE) limits that lifetime stretch down to 10 years in most cases; we will talk more about this in a few months in when I will be writing specifically about that law. However, whether lifetime or 10-year Stretch, nothing protects those funds from being squandered. Granted the new owner has to pay taxes at his/her own tax rate before the money can be withdrawn but it is still there for squandering if so desired. There is an RMD on this account for the beneficiary but more money can always be withdrawn and empty the account when they wish, just like many lottery winners do. Ever wondered why more than 50 percent of the lottery winners have lost all their money in a few years and actually are on the brink of bankruptcy? Third trap: it is extremely important that the inherited IRA is set up correctly. The Institutions or Certified Financial Planner you would be working with know that after death, no funds should be removed from the decedent’s IRA until a properly titled IRA is set-up for the one inheriting. The new account should be titled as an inherited IRA. Before any funds are moved, the account should be retitled keeping the name of the deceased IRA owner on the account and adding the beneficiary’s name to the title. An example of a properly titled inherited IRA is: John White IRA, deceased (give a date), f/b/o Jack or Jill White (son or daughter’s name), beneficiary. If there are multiple beneficiaries, then each beneficiary’s share should be set-up as a separate inherited IRA. The split must be done as a direct transfer and the split must be done by the end of the year after death. Fourth trap: No contributions. The IRA beneficiaries should know that this is an inherited IRA and not their own IRA. They cannot make contributions to this account; only withdraw per the rules. If they do contribute, they are deemed to have treated the account as their own and the entire account becomes subject to taxation and must be emptied. An inherited ROTH IRA may not be taxable but is also treated the same way. Fifth trap: Move inherited funds correctly. Inherited IRA funds can only be moved as direct transfers. A non-spouse beneficiary (like a child) can never do a rollover. If the funds are withdrawn as opposed to a direct transfer, they become subject to taxation and cannot be rolled over. Worst part is that such mistake cannot be corrected; there is no recourse. Sixth trap: Taking correct RMD. The 50 percent penalty for not taking correct RMD also applies to inherited IRAs. The RMD is calculated the same way as the original owner; except it will be calculated for the age of the new owner using the appropriate IRS tables. There you have it folks. Walk this minefield carefully.
Proper Caution is Necessary
We all should have our own IRAs for our retirement purposes. And we faithfully and seriously contribute to it under the auspices of what is allowed by law. Then there are 401Ks, which eventually get converted to IRAs, and together it becomes a reasonably sizeable pool of assets to be enjoyed in our retirement. So far so good. After we quit working, or even before that, but without getting penalized, we start withdrawing from these accounts. After a certain age the IRS tells you, or more like forces you, to take a minimum withdrawal (called RMD) from your retirement accounts. I think most of us know this drill or will be accustomed to it shortly. For many, these retirement accounts grow well and they are not able to exhaust their accounts in their lifetimes; which means that there is actually substantial money left in that account at the time of their death. So, what happens to all that money? Nothing to worry; IRS has made provisions for it. They insist that you have beneficiaries named in your custodial IRA account so that there is a clear pathway as to how the money will be disposed from your account when you are not there and the account becomes orphan. The first step in this regard is that the money will go to the surviving spouse and that is an easy process as written in the estate laws of this country and those of each State. It is the disposition of this account after the demise of the spouse is what I am most concerned with. That disposition needs to be handled carefully and we all need to be aware there are traps that we can easily fall into. The first trap: Are there beneficiaries named to the account and is it clear what percentage of your account will be inherited by them? You have to make sure that the banks follow this procedure. Having well defined beneficiaries to all your accounts is a must and you should insist on it. For IRAs generally it is children who inherit after both parents have died. If it is not equal distribution then the exact percentages must be specified. Second trap: On the beneficiary form it is important to have a contingent or per stirpes designated beneficiary named to allow more flexibility. It is possible that the first beneficiary predeceases the IRA owner and the beneficiary form was not updated. It is also possible that the first beneficiary, for whatever reasons, may decline to accept the IRA money. It used to be that an individual named as beneficiary could extend the required minimum distributions over his or her lifetime known as the stretch IRA. Framework and Guidelines for Handling Panic Situations in the Market
the portfolio of a buy-and-hold investor like me is not going to do anything in consolidating markets. But, it’s the volatility that gives that opportunity to make those “right” decisions that makes the material portfolio difference. It’s the framework and practice of how to go about keeping calm and taking rational decisions during panic situations, which makes the real difference of taking one’s portfolio capital to the next level. Hence, I went on to creating that framework for myself few years back that has been very helpful to me. Having a prioritized buy-list handy during good times happened to be the magic wand for most of my problems to handle panic situations. You never know when the market lights are going to turn amber from green, hence having it ready during green times is the key. If you have a prioritized buy-list ready, your brain doesn’t need to wander or it will not be allowed to get frozen, and the buy-list works as a program that has been written for the brain to simply follow the instructions. History has shown that investors experienced more 10-15 percent drawdowns compared to larger drawdowns at index level. And there are good odds that in the future we are going to experience more 10-15 percent drawdowns than 40-50

I feel it is very difficult to build a process to avoid a big portfolio crash when markets crash. But a logical framework can work as a guideline to help be level-headed. It’s a good time to use common sense when it becomes difficult to think through the options thrown at you by the market during carnage times. I used to panic when the market crashed like a house of cards. Just to be clear – I didn’t get panic attacks when I looked at all that red or that I got sleepless nights. Clicking “sell-all” button and exiting the markets never occurred to me, especially when I got the feeling that the pendulum of emotions is clearly in the extreme zone. But my panic was mainly driven by my inability to take rational long-term oriented decisions for my portfolio, and feeling ineffective as far as brain functioning was concerned. It’s the anxiety which got the better of me disrupting the decision-making process that often leads to poor choices. Maybe it’s just the way I am naturally wired. My brain doesn’t function well under time crunching situations because of which I cleared CFA level 3 on my third attempt. It was not that I didn’t know the material that I prepared for in my first two attempts, but my brain used to shut off knowing that the clock was ticking against me and my brain froze more and more with every tick. I realized I need to nurture my natural deficiency. There was desperate need for guidelines and framework that I needed to work upon to help myself in situations when everyone is losing their mind. implications on selling it. The goal is to build a tax efficient portfolio of businesses that you can hold on during good times and bad. And per my experience not all 2x thesis have worked out as expected. Many have turned out to be 0.5x proving out to be mental torture eating away lots of energy that can be spent on understanding better businesses. Hence, stronger quality businesses get priority.
percent drawdowns. Hence we should spend a lot more time to have a framework in-place for 10-15 percent corrections. Below I am sharing my thought process that went into building the framework for me for 10-15 percent correction situations and I am sharing it with the hope that it will help a new investor as a starting point and they can modify it as per their own investment objectives. It is a fluid, generic framework and will evolve with my increasing experience and increasing coverage universe of business that I understand. I would not say that it is complete in nature or is the best one that works in all situations for all type of investors. No. There is no one right way or one right answer in stock markets in panic situations. It all boils down to the individual’s preparedness and their situation with cash availability, investing style and temperament, type of capital one is dealing with, and ability to take drawdowns. So keep that in mind as you read the following: 1) Average-up your winners: Firstly, I give top priority to averaging-up the portfolio winners. If I have bought a structural business or a business with strong sectoral tailwinds (which are likely to continue in near future too) that has already been a winner and has further room for addition as far as percentage allocation is concerned, I go ahead and add more of it.
2) Dispassionately, cut your losers and future losers: Rationally, I shouldn’t wait to cut my losers until market corrects itself. Losers should be taken care of much before. But still if they happen to be part of my portfolio after correction, I just generate some cash by ruthlessly selling my losers. Use these funds to add to much stronger businesses. I referred to cutting “future losers” too. If the correction is event driven, you would know that event is going to lead certain sectors in medium to long term downtrend, confirming future fate of certain businesses and stock prices.
3) Reshuffling the portfolio: I perform a periodic exercise asking myself if I understand the business better with every quarter that passes by. On many occasions you won’t know everything about the important levers that move the needle for that business or would not have discovered unique insights about critical factors and hence these would be smaller positions in the portfolio. The thought process is to get a foot-in-the-door and then get better understanding and scale it up as conviction increases. Sometimes I have many positions in the tail consuming anywhere from 5-15 percent of the portfolio. Such a panic situation is the best time to reshuffle some of the low conviction businesses to higher conviction businesses. I can always get back to lower conviction businesses in future.
4) A core/compounder position gets higher priority than value plays: My biggest learning from the market has been to try to get into a situation where you have to take least number of decisions. With a compounder you buy it and hold it as long as the thesis is working out for you (hopefully for many years). But usually a value play (a 2x) – if you are lucky, and if your thesis worked out as expected, you tend to get out of the position when your target is achieved and then you need to work on redeploying that cash to work. 5) Have a plan/rule for how you would buy that position: It’s not just about buying “right” but how you go about accumulating it may turn out to be much more important. It is very rare that I have gone all-in in creating a new position during panic times. Most of the time, a staggered purchase has worked out well for me. It’s OK if you happen to just accumulate 2.5 percent of the position during the correction, but your goal was to make it 5 percent of the portfolio. In panic situation, usually it gets worse before it gets better. So, don’t mind accumulating remaining 2.5 percent at higher level once dust settles down. As always, I have my next purchase price with quantity ready as I go about accumulation my position in any situation. Creating these rules to how to accumulate beforehand and sticking to them keeps me sane during rough times and good times in the market.
Along similar lines, there is a fluid framework that I attempt to follow for situations when market corrects 25-35 percent and then another for >50 percent. It dives more into how to go about thinking to reshuffle the positions since I would have run out of cash by then. And the aggressiveness options that can be applied when index drops more than >50 percent. I think this framework for higher correction scenarios is not that generic in nature and can be used as reference point by everyone. It is more customized in nature and applies specifically to my investment objectives and my investment style driven by how I handle my personal finances. So I will not be able to share anything about it here. Finally, having a write-up of guidelines to be followed during panic times has been as much beneficial for me as a write-up for why I am buying a business. I thought to share my knowledge and how I attempted to overcome my challenge of facing markets during panic times.

This not only had all of the usual criteria for a great game, but it also was the first game I remember with an amazing twist along with its multiple endings. What really made it special, however, was the voice acting. It was the first game I can recall having incredibly believable voice performances for every single character, which helped bump the narrative and make it even more enjoyable. I’d enjoyed voice acting in cartoons for years, but Knights of the Old Republic showed me that great voice performances aren’t just for cartoons anymore, and I’ve become a huge fan of voice performers in general since then. Since then video game designers have worked to give their fans bigger and better games. There are even a few in recent years with soundtracks, graphics, and voice acting that could rival big Hollywood or South Asian film productions. A huge innovation in the realm of video games has been the integration of motion capture. While rotoscoping had been a technique for animation since Max Fleischer created it the 1915 to capture more lifelike body movements, the idea of accurately portraying an actor’s face through animation has always been difficult. WETA Digital started this process with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but James Cameron later fine-tuned the concept while filming the characters in Avatar. Since then, the use of motion capture has caused many voice actors to do more physically demanding but also much more poignant performances. The performance makes the narrative much more personal since you are, in essence, controlling a character’s actions as they move throughout the game. You are the one who keeps the protagonist alive or not through his or her available choices throughout the story. Later on, when that same character is seen handling an intense scene (whether it be losing a loved one, learning a dark secret, or even sacrificing his or herself to save someone else) the actor’s performance pulls you in. Also there’s something peculiarly attractive about the relationship that games put you into with regard to time since you can play within this imaginary world for as little or as much as you want each time. A few newer games such as Bioshock Infinite, God of War, The Last of Us, Nier: Automata and Detroit: Become Human have also added a special NPC who ends up traveling with your character throughout most of the story. Often one character is younger than the other and the two gradually become closer as they travel together on their journey. This is where motion capture truly shines, as in many cases the two performers act out their scenes together and in essence makes their interactions feel for lack of a better word… more real. Any game can be stunningly beautiful to look at, but there’s just something much more endearing about a game with both good story and character development. Whatever you may say about video games being potentially addictive… it’s no different than dealing with any other vice. A video game is essentially taking you out of your reality no different than drugs, alcohol, constantly checking your phone and other addictive behaviors can do. If I’m guilty of enjoying an exceptional narrative over a long period of time, then so be it. Video games, for me, offer food to the eyes, ears, brain and thumbs and we should celebrate our pleasure in them as we would any other art form. Now I should go and check in on Joel and Ellie to see where they’re heading off to next…

Heads of state should set aside their differences as the common enemy is a disease at war with vulnerable humans who can be ambushed anytime. While information in the 24/7 news cycle keeps people on high alert, the propensity of sharing advice, unknowingly forwarding fabricated material, and adding personal commentary has blurred the line between fact and fiction. This mirrors the old party game, ironically named Chinese Whispers and succeeds in providing some comic relief. However, the key difference is that when it is played by kids at a party, mass hysteria is far from the picture. Our instinct for self-preservation along with the desire to protect our family fires these trepidations whether it is the fear of a new illness, its pandemic nature or the lack of control over our future. On the flip side, our fears also help us in our fight for survival. It is my sincere hope that when you are reading my article, this ailment is a thing of the past and the only unsolved mystery that is lingering around is why did the Corona virus trigger an uncontrollable urge to hoard toilet paper?

As a kid growing up in a crowded environment in Delhi, I never had to deal with loneliness or depression. I was not a latch-key kid – in fact, there was no latch because we had Bankay. Today’s kids have Siri and Alexa and Google with voice recognition, facial recognition and artificial intelligence but none of those assistants know how to laugh and cry the same. None of those assistants know every visitor by name. None of those helpers really become a part of the family like Bankay. For that, you need real and emotional intelligence.
