Treks We have arrived where no one has gone before. Us, the everrestless species. Humans are always on journeys, treks if you will, through the vast lands and seas of our blue marble, and in the past few decades, it’s been off to outer space. We go on treks out of curiosity, necessity, seeking opportunities and greener pastures. Sadly, there are massive human migrations often escaping wars or injustice. Speaking of these human treks, last month, September 2026, my favorite sci fi franchise turned 60. Star Trek premiered in September 1966 and helped birth a new world in science fiction TV and films along the way. It introduced ideas and concepts that seemed novel and weird at the time but turned out to be so succinctly real and commonplace. The series also featured a diverse cast, which was unusual in the TV world of that time. When the original series premiered it was set about 300 years in the future. Now we are 240 years closer to that future since the starship Enterprise blasted off on TV sets. We have skipped, hopped and gotten closer to the future shown in the series. Obviously, we haven’t built spaceships that can travel at warp speeds or transport humans from one point to another via the flick of a few buttons in transporters. But many technologies of Star Trek are here. A good part of that future is now here. Gadgets and diversity abound, while our ability to easily get to alien lands right here on our planet has become routine. Now our imaginations are tinkering further with technology, and that science “fiction” is fast becoming fact. In the series the crew were on a mission to seek out new worlds and species. Now we have birthed a new species, right here on this planet, unseen in our physical realm, but one that is our intellectual equivalent. This new species offers convenience and efficiency for now, but unless we wrap our heads around its limitless capabilities, it could also be our undoing. Humans have created our prime competitors. Our imaginary treks to the stars have arrived at a real present. The arrival of Artificial Intelligence. AI has been with us for a while, but nothing like what has transpired over the last couple of years, fueled by the need to capture market share and the potential for vast riches. Companies and countries are tripping over each other thinking, “I can create AI that can beat up your AI.” Editor’s Desk continued on page 92

Strange Days bit of a resurgence due to what many saw as its hyper relevance for our world at the time. Many of us were in lockdown with most physical interaction strictly forbidden. During that forced quarantine, many went looking for any sort of experience that could quell the ache of solitude. The film‘s plot takes place during the last two nights of 1999 in a pseudo-nightmarish version of Los Angeles where social unrest and widespread corruption are as common as eating breakfast. Our central protagonist is Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes), a disgraced ex- cop who’s become a shell of who he was by this time in his life. He makes a living selling ‘playback’ tapes, technology originally invented by the FBI to replace wiretapping. (“Tape” is slang for the media, even though they look like mini data discs, but just go with it.) These tapes are recorded by a device called SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device). This cranial wear is advanced enough to record not only the visuals, but also emotions and physical sensations as if living in the moment experienced by its wearer. While this concept is not new to the genre (writer William Gibson would describe a similar device called a ‘SimStim’ a decade earlier in his novel, Neuromancer) it has since been utilized in other cyberpunk stories such as ‘Brain Dances’ in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game.
Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen
The cyberpunk genre is abundant with social political commentary, philosophical musings and devastating insight into the human condition. Many great films from the genre were released in the 1980’s and 90’s: Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, The Fifth Element, Robocop are but a few who’ve left their mark on our nostalgic subconscious. As we trot ever further into the 21st century, however, these stories have only grown more relevant and unsettling. These stories are the sort which leave you in deep thought for months on end. It is why people still discuss the above films among others to this day, debating theories and reflecting on the questions each poses. One film I hold as one of the best is Strange Days, directed by Kathryn Bigelow and based on a story by James Cameron. Strange Days released October 13, 1995, to a world that initially wasn’t ready for it. While it didn’t break ground or reinvent the wheel with its initial premise, its story has further been heightened by its foresight into our bleak technological future. In fact, 2020 saw the film experience a Saathee.com

First Indian Kid in Summer School The Through Line by Dhruv Pathak The summer after my freshman year, I rode a nearly empty bus to a rival school to spend three weeks retaking Algebra I. I had technically passed, but my end-of-grade test score was so low that CMS sent me to summer school. At 14, I already felt embarrassed. When I walked into the classroom, one of my teachers was an Indian woman. Almost immediately, she told me something I would remember for the next 19 years: in a decade of teaching summer school, I was the first Indian student she had ever had. A few days later, during a practice test, I caught myself staring at the ceiling. I wasn’t sure if I was thinking or just zoning out. The other teacher, a football coach who also taught math, noticed. “The answers are down on the paper. Not in the sky somewhere.” For years, people described me the same way: he’s smart, but he’s lazy. Eventually, I started saying it too. In
fifth grade, I made the honor roll with straight A’s and one B in math. Instead of feeling proud, I stood with my red ribbon, watching the kids with blue ones and feeling ashamed. Somewhere along the way, I picked up the idea that a smart Indian kid should be good at math. I wasn’t. What confused me was that school sometimes felt easy. I loved history. Dates, political arguments, and odd facts all stuck with me. I got a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam and a 4 on the European History exam without much effort. But when I saw an algebra problem, my mind just shut down. Everyone told me the answer was simple: try harder. I was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) at 18. Before that, I thought ADHD was just an excuse for kids who couldn’t sit still. I could sit still, but my mind wouldn’t cooperate. Summer School continued on page 72

Let’s Talk About AI Kismuth and the Way by Dipika Kohli
I have been writing this column for about ten years now, on and off. So, it makes sense that some of you will ask: ‘What do you think about AI?’ So, I had a conversation with someone I used to know at a café in Cary, NC. I went to this place a lot to do these meetings with long-lost colleagues, acquaintances, former friends, internet new friends from my writing community and while rekindling family ties. Each was good. Each wound about and took us places, like any good conversation or trip or life chapter will. Today’s conversation ended with this very question. What do I think about it. The whole AI thing. Well. I guess it’s time to talk about it, finally. After all, I’ve had a little bit of time since it blew up and then became called ‘slop’ and then was treated indifferently by many in my personal writing circles or detested by others. I don’t know very many people who love it or love to say out loud that they love it, but I’m certain those folks are out there, and in my communities, too. I guess we all have different opinions. I usually keep mine to myself but today is a different sort of day as I am writing this. I’ve had some time, I think, to sort out my emotions around what I feel. Maybe it’s time to share. The short answer is, ‘I have no idea what I think about this because each use case is so, so different.’ Information is just information. It’s not really ‘intelligence.’ And information is only high-value if it provides something new. How did someone put it once, let me try to remember. It’s not high-value info if it’s, ‘The sun will rise tomorrow,’ but it is very highvalue if it’s, ‘There will be an elephant crashing through the ceiling in five seconds... four... three...’ Kismuth continued on page 82

Everyday Yoga
by Urvashi Swami
Balasana (Child’s Pose) Ever noticed how instantly your mind feels relaxed as you rest your head down and close your eyes? That release is the feeling of coming home to yourself. That’s what balasana, or child’s pose, gives you. As you press your hips down towards your heels to elongate the back and rest your head down, you get the feeling of returning to safety. Your back finally gets the stretch it deserves, and your mind gets the sense of calm it craves. The asana lets you become mentally free like a child. Santosha (self-acceptance) is a yogic philosophy that focuses on finding happiness with your present self. It helps you become aware of your strengths and limitations and accept them. Accepting your strengths builds your self-worth, and accepting your weaknesses finds solutions. The more you run away from yourself, the more dissatisfied you will be. In a world that runs on external validation, yoga offers a pause to meet and appreciate yourself. Balasana gives you a moment to sit with yourself and have a dialogue with your body and mind. You stay present by following the rhythmic movements of your back as it moves with your inhale and exhale. When the day feels like too much, come to balasana — just to breathe. Saathee.com
To get into the asana: Sit on your knees, big toes touching, heels falling out to either side. Knees together or wide, depending on your comfort. Press your hips back toward your heels. Inhale, arms stretching up, fill yourself up completely. Exhale, arms reaching forward to the mat. Keep a soft bend in your elbows. Lower your hips, lengthen your back, soften your neck, let your forehead rest on the ground. Keeping your back long is important. Props like a yoga block or cushion can be used Stay for 5 long, deep breaths. What does the asana do to your body and mind? Releases lower back pain and counteracts long periods of sitting Stretches deep muscles in your thighs and hips to promote lower body mobility For postpartum mothers, it reduces tightness in shoulders and neck due to breastfeeding Activates the parasympathetic nervous system: rest and digest mode Promotes mind-body connection to stay in the present moment

From Passive to Active:
Green Card Applicants are Exploring New Options
Immigration Matters
A potential solution that has gotten increasing attention is the EB-5 employment creation visa classification. Recent changes to the EB-5 program have made the visa an increasingly attractive option for those that can afford the requirements. Historically viewed as a risky or prohibitive option, strategic updates to the program have made EB-5 one of the most compelling fast-track options for eligible families. Under current regulations, 20% of annual EB-5 visas are set aside for projects in Rural Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs), with additional set-asides for high-unemployment urban zones. Crucially, these reserved categories currently feature priority dates that are not backlogged – allowing Indian-born applicants to bypass the decade-long general queue entirely. For Indians already living and working in the US, the EB5 program now provides a game-changing option to permanent residency: concurrent filings for adjustment of status. Unlike in the past, an EB-5 applicant can simultaneously submit their EB-5 Immigrant Petition with their Application for Adjustment of Status and within months of filing can secure both a Employment Authorization Document and Advanced Parole travel permission. While the minimum investment threshold stands at $800,000 in TEA projects or $1,050,000 for standard investments and the investment does require the creation of 10 new full-time jobs, many Indian applicants are pooling
by Rishi P. Oza For decades, the story of the high-skilled South Asian professional in the United States followed a predictable trajectory: come to the US on an F-1 student visa, secure an H-1B lottery slot, gain corporate sponsorship through an EB2 or EB-3 sponsorship and wait out the process. Yet for hundreds of thousands of Indian-born engineers, physicians, scientists, and tech leaders across the country that traditional dream has turned into a bureaucratic waiting room. While the Trump Administration has focused almost entirely on the enforcement of immigration laws, it has done little to help alleviate the continued problem of immigration backlogs. As such, many of these highly skilled individuals have begun to explore other options for themselves. With employment-based backlogs for Indian nationals stretching past decades, families are increasingly exposed to precarious realities: strict 60-day clocks following a possible layoff, huge visa interview wait times at US Consulates abroad, endless visa renewal filings and the constant fear of teenage children “aging out” of H-4 dependency at age 21. A growing number of South Asian families are shifting from passively waiting under employer control to actively seeking their own solutions. By using saved, borrowed or gifted capital or framing their professional portfolios around extraordinary ability, the Indian diaspora is forging independent paths to permanent residency status. Obsession Beats Talent
Executive & Career Coach
some careers keep moving forward while others stall, even when the person seems to have everything needed? After watching this unfold for more than two decades, I have come to believe that one quality often makes the difference. That quality is obsession. The people I have seen reach the highest levels of their careers are often obsessed with something. It may be a purpose, a business problem they want to solve, a vision they want to build, or simply an extraordinary level of success they believe they can achieve. But there is an important distinction between chasing success and being obsessed with success. When you chase success, your attention is often on the outcome. You think about the promotion, the title, the recognition, the next opportunity, and why someone else got ahead of you. You constantly look at where you are compared to where you want to be.
by Payal Nanjiani
It has been 23 years since I began coaching executives globally. Over these years, I have had the privilege of working with leaders across almost every industry—from entertainment and technology to banking, manufacturing and professional services. I have coached people who are exceptionally talented, highly educated, hardworking, and ambitious. Many have all the credentials and capabilities one would expect from someone destined for the top. Yet not everyone gets there. This has always fascinated me. Why do some people become CEOs while others, who are just as smart and capable, never reach that level? Why do

Jaipur Literature Festival NC Review by Dilip Barman
My mother is from Ajmer in Rajasthan and her mom is from Jaipur, which is where the Jaipur Literature Festival was founded in 2006. Over the past two decades it has become one of the most celebrated and revered literary festivals in the world, featuring authors like Kiran Desai, Vikram Seth, Pico Iyer, V.S. Naipul, Shashi Tharoor, Chitra Banerjee, Anuradha Roy, Noam Chomsky, and Henry Louis Gates Jr. According to its website, its mission is to give voice to “a diverse mix of the world’s greatest writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sports people and entertainers on one stage to champion the freedom to express and engage in thoughtful debate and dialogue”. We’re very lucky that North Carolina (they’ve been in Chapel Hill and Raleigh) is one of their few locations they produce this festival outside of Jaipur. In the United States they have festivals in Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Houston, and Boulder; of course Jaipur, but also Toronto, Ireland (Belfast, Armagh, Dundalk, and Dublin this past May 22-31), and Spain (Valladolid and Madrid) are also host locations. The festival in North Carolina, held September 11 – 13, 2026 this year was the start of the six-city US tour. Besides attracting top authors mainly but not at all only from the subcontinent, the organizers are also themselves renowned with tremendous backgrounds, such as Sanjoy K. Roy and Sree Sreenivasan. Roy is the visionary who in 1989 created and now is Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces the Festival and over 30 other events in 17 countries, as well as several films. He has produced or directed over 50 theatre productions and written a memoir, There is a Ghost in My Room. He has received numerous awards including the Tagore Award for social innovation and the White House Arts and Humanities Award for his organization Salaam Baalak Trust, for which is a founder and which supports inner city Delhi street and working children. Sree Sreenivasan, one of the moderators, was a professor of journalism at Columbia University for twenty years and co-hosted the annual Nobel Peace Conference. Voted the World’s Most Influential Chief Digital Officer in 2016, he has been CDO for Columbia University, City of New York, and the largest art museum in the United States, the Saathee.com

Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is widely followed by journalists, CEOs, college presidents, and at least five billionaires. He helped in Kamala Harris’ presidential bid. Next year JLF returns to North Carolina again the weekend after Labor Day, September 10-12, 2027. You can also travel to see the Festival in other locations around the world. The 20th anniversary festival is in Jaipur this coming January 14-18, 2027. This year the festival in North Carolina was at Meredith College in Raleigh. I attended the program on Saturday, September 12, 2026, and am delighted to share a brief overview as well as summarize a discussion that I had with author Manil Suri, a fellow math teacher. There’s so much depth; I could write a whole article on any one of the speakers. I encourage you to visit jlflitfest.org/north-carolina to get more details about the backgrounds and awards of the presenters, and I will just focus here on short summaries. After a musical beginning, the first session had a panel of Karan Mahajan and Melissa Faliveno. Mahajan is the author of books like The Association of Small Bombs (one of the Ten Best Books of the Year by The New York Times Book Review) and Family Planning, and Faliveno wrote an essay collection Tomboyland and the novel Hemlock. The discussion focused on how families draw and anchor us and explored the notion of “you can’t go home again”. What does it mean to leave – India for the U.S, rural Wisconsin for New York City? What does it mean for aspirations of those who choose to remain? What does repatriation and return look like? I love seeing STEM leaders who also excel in writing like math teacher Manil Suri and Boston University neurology professor Pria Anand. Anand has woven storytelling through her book The Mind Electric. There is so much unknown about the brain. She described sleep as having its own architecture. She voiced concern for the speed and volume of which technology is impacting us and especially the youth. She argued that, like voting, drinking alcohol, and driving, why should technology adoption not be limited by age. JLF continued on page 86 42

Cracking the Job Market Internships Can be Just as Key for Young People as the Degree
as a powerful equalizer for young people who may not otherwise have such career opportunities.
By Matthew J. Mayhew, Courtney DeRoche, and Yun-Han Weng College students are facing one of the most precarious labor markets in years. A recent New York Federal Reserve study pointed to a sharp increase in the post-college unemployed compared with other workers, with explanations ranging from artificial intelligence job displacement to a broader slowdown in hiring. One response has been a boom in trade-school and apprenticeship programs that launch young people into “AI-proof” careers. But students at community and four-year colleges can also beat these headwinds and launch a career through onthe-job internships. We’re a group of multidisciplinary scholars at The Ohio State University who study two paid internship programs in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, with a proven record of landing jobs for students. Although the two initiatives use different models, they both illustrate four lessons that colleges and employers can use to turn internships into genuine career pathways. Just as notable is that a large share of these students come from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, with many being the first in their families to go to college. These programs can serve Saathee.com
Quality over quantity Internships remain one of higher education’s most powerful tools for preparing students for work. Decades of research show that students who complete high-quality internships are more likely to secure job interviews and high-earning positions post-graduation. At the same time, the number of internship opportunities is diminishing, even though that preparation matters more than ever. Artificial intelligence is transforming entry-level work, leading employers to increasingly value the human skills that machines cannot easily replicate: judgment, adaptability, collaboration and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems. Academic leaders recognize these pressures. More than one-third of university presidents and two-thirds of community college presidents told an Inside Higher Ed survey that they plan to add or expand apprenticeship pathways over the next three years. But it’s not just the number of internships that matters – internship quality counts just as much. Job Market Continued on page 50

Making work matter In both programs, four valuable principles emerged. First is the importance of meaningful work. We believe interns should tackle real organizational challenges with deliverables that matter beyond the classroom. For example, two interns spent the summer addressing a safety challenge for Honda – how to prevent battery cells from catching fire and cooling them down when they do. After developing potential solutions, they presented their work to industry representatives. A senior engineer from the Honda Research Institute was so impressed that he contacted them about a post-internship opportunity. That sense of consequence changed how the students approached the work. Rather than viewing it as an assignment to complete, they were making a contribution that others depended on. Second is the constellation of support for students. The liaison between the institution and industry partners is essential, serving as the connective tissue that holds the internship together and ensuring that students don’t fall through the cracks. But that liaison alone isn’t enough. Students also need access to faculty, industry supervisors, technical experts and peers, since each brings a different kind of guidance. One strength of the clean energy program, for example, is its inclusion of industry experts across institutions and organizations. Students benefit most when they can draw on multiple mentors and peer support to develop key collaborative skills. Third, students should learn how to normalize struggles. Internships aren’t a test of whether students can already function as professionals. They’re environments for students to try, fail and retry. When educators emphasize struggle as part of the learning process, students are encouraged to avoid perfectionism and instead ask for help. For example, students submit weekly reports during the clean energy program that give them the chance to discuss challenges, troubleshoot problems together and recognize that uncertainty is part of becoming a professional. Finally, it’s vital to make interns’ contributions visible. Presentations, project showcases and recognition from industry professionals reinforce that students’ work matters while strengthening their professional identities. We believe universities and industries alike should heed these lessons, which extend well beyond clean energy manufacturing and automotive technology. Successful programs build ecosystems that often determine whether students simply complete an internship or launch a career. As colleges respond to changing labor markets, they should resist measuring success just by how many internships they create. Instead, they should ask whether those opportunities help students become confident, capable professionals. Internship quantity opens the door to better outcomes after college. Internship quality changes lives.

Our research at the College Impact Laboratory examined learning through experience with two multi-institutional studies. One is Bridging Academic Training Through Experiential Research and Innovation, or BATTERI, led by principal investigator Jay Sayre and project manager Joanna Gardner. The other is Drive to Thrive. Across both initiatives, students benefited when their experiences combined substantive work with mentoring and professional development, rather than being treated as inexpensive labor. This distinction suggests that merely placing students in workplaces isn’t enough. The structure and quality of those experiences help determine whether internships lead to meaningful, high-earning careers. Learning by doing Drive to Thrive deploys an approach called earn-as-youlearn. Through partnerships with Ford dealerships, students alternate between classroom instruction and paid workplace experience. They work alongside experienced technicians, diagnose and repair customers’ vehicles and receive regular coaching. In this sense, it’s similar to the European model of traineeships for young people. This initiative reached 635 students at 18 community colleges, including 345 first-generation students and 300 students of color. Through interviews and focus groups, a majority told us the internship helped them see themselves as true professionals. And several said the internship confirmed they had chosen the right career. The numbers also backed up our approach. Students in the earn-as-you-learn program were almost 50% more likely to graduate compared with students in a matched comparison group. Our other program brings together clean energy manufacturing students from three different types of institutions – a major research university, a historically Black university and a community college – for a 10-week internship. The program combines workplace learning with professional development workshops, peer networking, community engagement and projects with industry partners such as Honda, Stellantis and Schaeffler. This initiative took a distinctive approach by assigning multiple mentors to each student. The idea is to help students develop relationships with faculty members, technical experts, employers and classmates. This network, in turn, strengthened students’ confidence, professional identity and sense of belonging while complementing the technical skills they develop. To date, the formula has worked. More than half the participants in 2025 have already lined up either a new internship or job interviews. Industry partners also plan to rehire several members of the 2026 cohort as interns, extending their training beyond our program and opening pathways into clean-tech careers. Based on this record, we believe that colleges should build broader support networks around internships rather than expect a single supervisor to shoulder the entire responsibility for a student’s professional development. Condo Insurance
drywall to walls-in which includes the drywall. Be sure to understand the coverage provided by your HOA or else you will either end up buying duplicate insurance coverage or worse, you will have inadequate insurance. Increasingly, the master policies are moving away from generous coverage to bare minimum and in some extreme cases, they will cover only common-owned areas like swimming pools, clubhouses, etc. But at a minimum, the master policy should cover the reconstruction of the building, roof and plumbing/electric behind the walls. As I went through the policies with my clients, I realized that many of them were not aware that they were vastly over or under insured. If the HOA policy is not covering the exterior of your building, it will create a large exposure because not only are you responsible for getting the repairs done but also for any gaps if your neighbor does not have adequate insurance. This includes the inside paint, personal property, liability for injury and living expenses if your condo is uninhabitable due to a covered peril. For most of our clients, we ended up saving up to 40% of their costs by looking at their coverages and switching companies as needed.
by Anuj Kasera Every month I try to bring common issues that come up during my interactions with clients. With the growth of condos and townhomes in major cities like Charlotte and Raleigh, many clients have exposure to these units either as a primary resident or landlord. Condos or townhomes have unique coverages and risks because unlike single family homes, these units have shared common areas and structures. So that raises an important question. How much coverage do I need? What does the HOA cover? What is the responsibility of my neighbors and conversely, am I liable for any damage that happens to their units. So, let’s talk about the condo insurance. First, most condos will be within a Home Owners Association (HOA). It will purchase a master policy to cover common areas like clubhouses, pool, and parking lots. This insurance is paid for by your HOA monthly dues. Depending on the bylaws of your association, the master policy may range from a bare minimum policy or an allinclusive policy which will cover your entire unit except personal property. There are different levels of the master policy. The coverage can extend from stud-in which excludes the

The 60-Second Way to Reset Your Mind No Meditation Cushion Required
daylight. Forcing your brain to process peripheral visual details transitions your nervous system out of “fight or flight” mode and anchors you firmly in the present moment.
My Voice by Swami Jeevan Nishkam
2. The Mindful Chai or Coffee Break How often do you drink your morning chai or coffee while typing an email, only to look down and realize it’s gone without you having actually tasted it? The next time you hold a warm cup, take just the first five sips in complete silence. Pay full attention to the warmth, the aromatic cardamom or roasted beans, and the distinct flavor profile. Treating simple daily rituals with total attentiveness interrupts the cycle of continuous multitasking and stress.
In today’s hyper-connected world, the word “meditation” often conjures up a specific image: someone sitting cross-legged on a cushion in a quiet room, eyes closed, desperately trying to empty their mind while incense burns nearby. For most of us balancing demanding careers, community commitments, and family obligations, finding an uninterrupted 30 minutes to sit in absolute silence feels less like peace and more like another item on an overwhelming to-do list. Here is the secret: true mindfulness doesn’t require a rigid setup or an hour off the grid. Ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience agree that meditation isn’t a separate activity you add to your calendar; it is a quality of awareness you bring to what you are already doing. You don’t need to change your lifestyle. You just need to shift your attention. By bringing active awareness into your daily routine, you can turn ordinary moments into a powerful shield against everyday stress.
3. The Vagus Nerve Reset When a high-stress email or frustrating message lands in your inbox, resist the urge to fire off an immediate response. Pause and close your eyes for 60 seconds. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, make a low, gentle humming sound (similar to the classic Bhramari pranayama). The physical vibration directly stimulates your vagus nerve—acting as a natural brake pedal for your nervous system and giving you the mental clarity to respond thoughtfully rather than reactively. Mindfulness is as natural as breathing. By bringing total alertness to our movements, our meals, and our daily breaks, we step off the endless productivity treadmill and rediscover the quiet clarity within.
1. The Peripheral Walk The next time you take a breather, let’s say in the Carolinas, whether strolling through the Charlotte Rail Trail, walking near Pullen Park in Raleigh, or taking a quick step outside your office, put your smartphone in your pocket. North Carolina NC Voters to Decide on Property and Income Tax Limits The General Assembly of North Carolina has approved two constitutional amendments on property and income tax limits for the general election to be held in early November. Voters will decide on both measures as they will be on the ballot. The first amendment would prohibit raising the state income tax rate above 3.5%. As of 2026, North Carolina has a flat individual income tax rate of 3.99%. The second proposed amendment would require the General Assembly to pass laws limiting property taxes increases. Under the amendment, the General Assembly would not be permitted to authorize local governments to levy taxes on property, “except for purposes authorized by general law uniformly applicable throughout the State, unless the tax is approved by a majority of the qualified voters of the unit who vote thereon,” according to the state of North Carolina. Rate Your Habits Mindful Masala That was it. No eye roll, no lecture. Just a quiet hand under a table. He wasn’t testing me. He was just helping me out. I have made plenty of cultural mistakes in twentyeight years. Spoke too loudly in the wrong places. Didn’t know the unwritten rules. Showed up to things slightly wrong in ways I only understood later. Most of the time nobody said anything. A few times someone like Ray did. The difference between those two things is something I haven’t forgotten. Twenty-eight years later, sitting on a shuttle bus in Banff with my wife, that simple gesture felt a world away. Lately, my feed has been filled with videos of Indians behaving badly abroad. Garba in quiet public squares, cutting lines, yelling at waitstaff, carrying that specific unbothered noise from back home into places that expect quiet. Every time one of those videos appears, I feel a physical cringe. So in Banff, I went into overdrive. I became the most polite Indian in the Canadian Rockies. I held open every heavy door I could find. I jogged over to take photos for families. I yielded on trails.
by Hiren Deliwala
In 1998, during my first year in the United States, a group of white colleagues invited me to a work dinner at a fancy Italian restaurant. Walking in felt overwhelming. We passed a wine cellar the size of a room. The tables were large, the lighting warm and low, and everyone around me seemed to know exactly where to sit and what to do. I had grown up in Amdavad, and nothing in my life there had prepared me for this. I stood at that table trying to look comfortable while quietly panicking. The place settings alone — four silverware pieces, multiple glasses — felt like a test I hadn’t studied for. I kept staring at the two glasses in front of me, terrified I was going to drink from the wrong one. A colleague named Ray, sitting next to me, noticed. Under the table, he held up both hands and made a small “b” with his left index finger and thumb, and a “d” with his right. “Left is bread, right is drink,” he murmured, without making a scene. “B and D.” Saathee.com

How to Get Medical Shadowing Experience in High School
College Admissions Insider by Kristen Moon For students interested in medicine, BS/MD programs, dentistry, nursing, physical therapy, or other healthcare careers, shadowing is one of the best ways to see what working in healthcare is like. It allows students to observe healthcare professionals in their daily work and gain firsthand insight into patient care, communication, teamwork, and professionalism. Why Is Shadowing Important? Shadowing helps students understand the realities of healthcare beyond what they learn in a classroom as well as helps students determine whether healthcare is truly the right career path for them. For students applying to competitive programs such as BS/MD programs, meaningful shadowing can demonstrate genuine interest in healthcare, initiative, and a willingness to explore the profession. The goal shouldn’t be to accumulate as many hours as possible, but to gain meaningful experiences and reflect on what you learn. Where Can You Shadow? Medical shadowing opportunities aren’t limited to large hospitals. Students may be able to shadow at physician offices, private practices, hospitals, dental or orthodontic offices, physical therapy clinics, and specialty practices. You also don’t have to limit yourself to physicians. Shadowing a dentist, physical therapist, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant can provide valuable insight into different healthcare careers and the many professionals involved in patient care.
How to Find a Shadowing Opportunity One of the easiest places to start is with your existing network. Ask family members, family friends, your physician, dentist, orthodontist, or physical therapist if they know of healthcare professionals who allow students to shadow. When reaching out, introduce yourself, explain your interest in healthcare, and maintain a professional tone. If you don’t have a personal connection, contact local healthcare practices directly. Call or email to ask whether they allow high school students to shadow and be prepared to briefly explain who you are and why you’re interested. You can also research formal observation or volunteer programs offered by local hospitals and healthcare systems, keeping in mind that these may have application deadlines or other requirements. Don’t be discouraged by a few “no” responses. Some practices have restrictions or limited availability, so persistence and respectful follow-up are important. LinkedIn can also be helpful for identifying healthcare professionals in your area. If you reach out, use your own account and keep your message professional, concise, and specific about why you’re interested in their work. How to Prepare for Your First Shadowing Experience Once you secure an opportunity, ask the physician or program coordinator what you should expect. Find out whether there is a dress code, whether you need to complete paperwork, what you should bring, and what time you should arrive. If you aren’t given specific clothing instructions, business casual is generally a safe choice. You may also want to bring a small notebook and pen to record interesting observations, unfamiliar medical terms, or questions to research later. College continued on page 94

News Notes Household Gods: Hindu Devotional Prints, 1860–1930
BRICS Summit

The 18th BRICS summit, which took place September 12 – 13, 2026 in New Delhi, won praise from several member countries. It was held in there under India’s chairmanship. BRICS comprises 11 major emerging economies, representing nearly half the world’s population and around 40 per cent of global GDP. The BRICS countries unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026 at the Summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping among the world leaders attending. South Africa, Russia, China, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates, welcomed India’s efforts to strengthen cooperation within the grouping and advance the priorities of the Global South. UN Chief António Guterres praised India’s BRICS Presidency and congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on India holding the BRICS chairship for the fourth time. In a social media post, the Director General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, appreciated the commitment to universal health coverage, resilient health systems, and the successful conclusion of negotiations on the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing Annex to the Pandemic Agreement. Michael Kugelman, a Senior Fellow for South Asia at the Atlantic Council, said the declaration reflects India’s growing convening power and the increasing appeal of the BRICS grouping. The declaration expressed serious concern over unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures, saying they distort global trade and violate World Trade Organisation rules. It also stressed the need for cooperation on terrorism, conflict prevention and the peaceful resolution of disputes. During its year-long chairmanship, India focused on strengthening economic and development cooperation, promoting the interests of developing countries and giving greater voice to the Global South in global affairs.

In Hinduism, the act of darshan, or “seeing god,” is central to worship. This intimate exchange between deity and devotee traditionally takes place in the temple. But within each home is also a shrine, dedicated to that householder’s chosen deity. The need to display an image of the divine in the home was traditionally fulfilled by small icons made of clay or metal. In the mid-19th century, new technologies were introduced into India, first photography and then the chromolithographic press. The latter permitted the production of inexpensive prints of the Hindu gods for mass consumption. These proved immensely popular and for the first time in India, even the humblest home could afford a colorful icon of their chosen god to display in the household shrine. Household Gods: Hindu Devotional Prints, 1860– 1930 presents the first encyclopedic exhibition of these chromolithographic prints from the pioneering studio presses of Calcutta (Kolkata), Poona (Pune), and Bombay (Mumbai). These massproduced prints became a powerful means of expressing Indian religious identity at a time when the country was experiencing the first stirrings of the Independence movement. Featuring approximately 120 works, shown in four rotations, from The Met’s collection of chromolithographic prints, along with paintings and portable triptych shrines, Household Gods provides a unique window on the vibrant tradition of Indian devotional imagery on the cusp of modernity. During the exhibition, a selection of artworks will come off view and be replaced by new works. The exhibition runs through June 27, 2027, at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 251, NYC. Free with Museum admission. Info: Metmuseum.org. October 2026

Yields and Compute Finance
From a market’s perspective, it means that the debasement trade continues to have legs. Gold particularly looks like a good way to play it. The second is major Wall St. firms partnering with Nvidia to provide $500bn of outside capital for the datacenter buildout. Nvidia will provide depreciation insurance. The importance of this is that it creates new sources of capital to finance the AI buildout. It will create a new asset class securitizing compute. You will soon get a call from your broker to buy “CBS” – compute-backed securities. The SEC eased rules around such securities to further promote them. If there is even modest success, Wall St. will make this a much bigger asset class. With the Treasury defending yields, it means that these types of securities and the AI-buildout continue to get financed. The latest data from across the AI-supply chain should ease depreciation and payback concerns. Perhaps one of the most controversial AI-stocks, CoreWeave reported earnings in August. CoreWeave grew revenue 112%, grew its backlog to $104.2bn, and said near-term capacity is sold out. Perhaps more important to broader AI depreciation concerns, CoreWeave reported that A100s, 6year-old silicon was contracted through 2029, while pushing a 25% price increase in July. Similarly, neo-cloud Nebius reported 454% year-overyear growth. They said the expected payback period for their associated cap-ex was 1-year and 10 months, down from two to three years.
Eye on the Markets by Ketu Desai
There were two events in August that could have a lasting impact on markets. The first event was two instances in which the Treasury used historically unconventional ways to defend Treasury yields. The first instance was the US intervening to support the Japanese Yen for the first time since 1998. The intervention came after the Yen hit a 40YR low against the dollar. The US intervened to prevent the Japanese from selling Treasuries to support the Yen, which would have driven our rates up. The second instance was the Treasury Secretary doubling the long-term Treasury buyback. The buyback amounts to a third of issuance. He said he will do more if necessary. While the new Fed Chair has made it clear that he wants the market to do the heavy lifting in setting short-rates, the Treasury Secretary is taking leadership in managing the long-end. The power has now shifted to the Treasury. There is a clear bond put in place from Treasury. It is a form of yield curve control. The Treasury wants to push issuance to the front end, where rates are lower. They want to stimulate new forms of demand for the short end, such as from stablecoins and banking de-regulation. Treasury knows it has to keep rates below a certain level to help finance the deficit. Interest expense as percentage of GDP is now near a historic high. Saathee.com

Obsession
I’ve also seen people who weren’t the most naturally gifted in the room eventually become the ones leading it. What did they have? They kept going. They kept learning and improving. They kept raising their own standards. They stayed curious long after others stopped asking questions. Most importantly, they refused to settle for being good when they knew they could be better. That’s why, when someone says they want to be a CEO, I don’t just look at their talent, experience, or leadership skills. I want to know what drives them when no one is watching. Because wanting the title is not enough. If you truly want to reach the top, you need to care deeply about everything that makes you ready for the responsibility. You have to be obsessed with understanding the business, creating value, developing people, solving problems, and always getting better at what you do. The title should come as a result of that journey, not be the reason for it. After all these years of coaching executives, I’ve learned that the people who reach the top aren’t always the most talented. But they almost always have a level of commitment that’s hard to teach. They care deeply about what they’re trying to achieve. They have a clear idea of what’s possible and are willing to stick with it long after the initial excitement is gone. Talent matters. Hard work matters. Intelligence matters. But when talent meets obsession, something changes. You stop looking for shortcuts and stop waiting for someone to give you permission. You’re willing to do the work, learn from setbacks, and keep going even when the journey takes longer than you thought. Talent can open the door, but obsession is often what gets you through it.
continued from page 40
When you’re obsessed, things shift. You stop focusing on the reward and start caring about the work it takes to get there. You get deeply interested in the business, the customers, the problems, the people, and the results. You think about what could improve, what you missed, what you need to learn, and what you should do differently next time. You don’t simply want the position. You want to become the person capable of handling that position. That is a very different kind of ambition. In the corporate world, we’re taught to work hard, build our skills, hit our targets, build relationships, get good reviews, and keep moving forward in our careers. All that matters, but in my experience, few people talk about the deep drive that lies behind truly great achievements. I have seen it first-hand while coaching some of the world’s top CEOs and senior executives. The best of them often have an unusual intensity about what they do. Interestingly, they don’t necessarily appear intense from the outside. Many are calm, measured, and incredibly composed. But when you sit with them and talk about their business, you can feel how deeply invested they are in the outcome. They know their business and their customers. They understand what’s happening in their industry and think about what might come next. They picture where they want to take the organization and spend a lot of time figuring out how to get there. And when something doesn’t work, they don’t simply move on. They want to understand why. They ask themselves what they missed, what they could have done differently, and what they need to change next time. That ongoing drive to understand, improve, and get closer to their goal is what I mean by obsession. But let me be clear. Obsession doesn’t mean working eighteen hours a day or giving up your health, family, or peace of mind for ambition. It also doesn’t mean always worrying about whether you’ll succeed. In fact, some of the most driven leaders I have coached are remarkably good at letting go. They do their best and leave the rest. They understand that there will always be things they cannot control, and they don’t waste their energy fighting those realities. They focus intensely on what they can influence and then move forward. That, to me, is a healthy obsession. It’s a deep commitment to the goal without getting emotionally caught up in every obstacle along the way. And this is where talent can sometimes be misleading. Talent gets you noticed and can open the first door. Intelligence helps you solve tough problems, and hard work takes you far. But none of these guarantees you’ll keep moving forward when the excitement fades, the promotion doesn’t come, someone else gets the chance, or the path gets harder than you thought. I’ve seen very talented executives plateau because they got comfortable. They reached a level that felt successful, and somewhere along the way, their drive to keep growing faded. Saathee.com

Mindful Masala
continued from page 58
Looking at my wife on the bus, I said, “We need an app called Rate Your Indian. Every time we hold a door or let someone merge, people give us five stars. We can lift the community score.” We laughed, but there was a sharp edge to it. I added, “We should only do it for white and Black tourists though. Other Indians aren’t keeping score.” It was a funny line, but an ugly one too. It showed I was just putting on a show for strangers. After twenty-eight years, I had gone from the guy who needed help to the guy quietly judging everyone else. I wasn’t holding doors to be kind. I was holding them so people wouldn’t lump me in with those videos. Fitting in doesn’t really have a finish line. You don’t just arrive one day and close the door behind you. It’s a long, messy journey — shedding old habits, picking up new ones, getting things wrong, occasionally getting them right. I see new arrivals now doing the same things I probably did years ago. It’s easy to get annoyed. It’s easy to become the condescending guy who looks down on his own people just to feel more American. I’ve been that guy more than I’d like to admit. It’s fair to want us to do better in public. But there’s a difference between judging someone and holding out a hand. I don’t need to run a rating system for my people. I just need to remember the guy at the dinner table in 1998 and pass along the b and the d with a little generosity.

others sit down, read something hard, finish it, and wondered why that felt impossible for me. Stop making excuses. Maybe there’s some truth to that. Sometimes I am lazy. Sometimes I make bad choices. ADHD doesn’t take away my responsibility for my life. The problem was that I spent years treating every failure as proof that something was wrong with me. I couldn’t separate “I made a mistake” from “there is something wrong with me.” Admitting I needed help felt harder than anything else. My wife started teaching me that asking for help did not have to be humiliating. She saw the unfinished projects, the chaotic routines, the moods, and how time could slip away from me. She helped me organize my work and build routines without making me feel stupid for needing them. She gave me something I had tried to replace with shame for years: accountability without shame. Medication helped too. So did getting enough sleep, exercising, eating better, therapy, meditation, and learning to build systems instead of waiting for willpower. None of this cured me. I still hate having ADHD sometimes. I still hesitate to call it a disability. I still catch myself thinking that if I were smarter, tougher, or more disciplined, I wouldn’t need medication, reminders, calendars, routines, or anyone else’s help. I turned 33 this year. The number itself doesn’t make this essay more important than if I had written it earlier, except for one thing: I finally know myself well enough to put it into words in a way that might help someone else with an ADHD mind. Maybe some Indian people will read this and think I am making excuses. For years, I assumed they would, without ever really giving them the chance to prove me right or wrong. Here’s something I usually leave out: I have failed classes. I dropped out of school. I have lost jobs and friendships. I have disappointed people I love. I take responsibility for those things. ADHD explains some of them, but it does not erase them. That distinction took me years to understand. An explanation is not an excuse, and responsibility does not have to mean self-hatred. Sometimes I think back to that 14-year-old Indian kid in summer school, staring at the ceiling while everyone else seemed to know the answers were right in front of them. Maybe he didn’t need someone else telling him where to look. Maybe he needed someone to ask why looking down at the page had become so hard. If one Indian kid who has been called “smart” and “lazy” in the same sentence reads this and thinks, “Me too,” then writing it was worth it. I spent a long time believing that shame was mine alone. I don’t believe that anymore, and I hope anyone else carrying it can set it down too.
Summer School
continued from page 26
In college, a neighbor with ADHD told me that without medication, he struggled to get up for class, follow conversations, and even do work he cared about. I immediately saw myself in his story. After waiting twelve weeks, I saw a psychiatrist in Greensboro. She was Indian, which I found a little funny. I took a written test, we talked about school, and she looked over my history. Then she told me I had ADHD. The diagnosis felt almost anticlimactic. I had spent years wondering what was wrong, and suddenly I had an explanation. After that, I spent most of the next decade trying to prove her wrong. I didn’t really tell my parents. I joked about it and made it seem less serious. I worried they wouldn’t believe me. My dad always said our family came from people who could do anything if they tried. My mom still jokes that I could have been a doctor, lawyer, or engineer because I was smart enough, just too lazy. That joke says a lot: ability is there; effort is what matters. But what do you do when you know what needs to be done, want to do it, sometimes even need to do it, and still can’t? For most of my life, I thought the answer was simple: you just aren’t trying hard enough. In 2016, I worked on a campaign to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. I drove my own car all over North Carolina, and every quarter I had to submit a mileage log to get reimbursed. I was owed almost $2,000. The paperwork would have taken about fifteen minutes, but I put it off for three months. At first, I told myself there was still time. Then I lost the receipts and had to recreate the trips. Each day I waited made the task harder and made me less likely to start. Soon, the spreadsheet felt like it was following me everywhere. I became convinced I would get fired. I felt guilty doing anything fun because that Excel sheet was always waiting for me. I even skipped my best friend’s birthday—not because anyone told me I couldn’t go, but because I was punishing myself. Spoiler: I was the only one who thought this much about my mileage reimbursement. This is what ADHD feels like for most of us. I can turn simple tasks into huge problems and then get mad at myself for being afraid of them. I still do this. I can wash, dry, and fold laundry, but then leave it in a basket for a week because putting it away suddenly feels overwhelming. Where does this shirt go? Am I hanging it right? What if I have to redo it? It sounds ridiculous, and sometimes it is, but that doesn’t make it feel any less real. That is the part of ADHD I have been afraid of. That’s the part I’ve been scared to share with other Indians. Saying “I have ADHD” is easy enough—I can even joke about it. What’s harder is admitting what it really looks like. I’ve lied about why I was late because saying I couldn’t get there on time felt humiliating. I’ve ignored texts from people I care about, then avoided them longer because I felt guilty. I abandoned projects I cared about as soon as the excitement faded. I’ve watched

Ways to Use Greek Yogurt (or Dahi) in Indian Dishes
Hi Saathee family! I recently thought while trying to hit my protein goals: there are so many “high protein” recipes out there that have started incorporating Greek yogurt, but what about all the Indian classics that have been incorporating it for generations? Homemade yogurt, or dahi, is an Indian household staple. It’s used in curries and main dishes, marinades, rice dishes, breads like naan, chaats, desserts, and sides. While Greek yogurt and dahi aren’t exactly the same, it can be a great substitute when you don’t have homemade yogurt on hand. I thought it would be fun to do a three-part series of recipes using Greek yogurt. Maybe think about some of your go-to Indian dishes when you’re trying to hit those protein goals. This month I bring you the super simple Indian side dish Raita. It basically can go with amost everything.
Ingredients
Directions
1 1/2 cups Greek yogurt or Dahi (homemade if possible)
Prep ingredients.
3/4 cup shredded cucumber (squeeze excess moisture out) 2 tbsp cilantro (chopped) 1 tsp rai na kuria (ground mustard seeds) (optional but recommended) 1/2 tsp ground cumin Salt to taste
Servings: About 2 cups Prep Time: 10 minutes / Cooking Time: none
Shred the cucumber and squeeze out excess moisture. Chop the cilantro and optional green chili. Grind the mustard seeds if you don’t already have rai na kuria. Mix all ingredients together with the Greek yogurt and adjust spices to taste if needed. Raita is best served chilled alongside your favorite desi dish.
1 green chili pepper (seeded and chopped) (optional) Saathee.com

Ideally, your condo policy should cover everything that the master policy doesn’t. All policies almost always exclude regular wear and tear, intentional damage and negligence. Other than hail/storm, the biggest claim is usually caused by water. So let us consider the various aspects of the coverage using water damage as an example. Consider the scenario where water leaks from your bathroom and floods the neighbor’s unit downstairs. Who is responsible? If the water damage was caused by a water pipe inside the common walls, the HOA may step in and repair the damage to all units. If the HOA does not have adequate insurance, each unit holder is responsible for the damage within their unit. If the water damage was caused by a leaking toilet in your unit, then the underlying circumstances will determine who is responsible: If the toilet just started leaking, it is treated as an accident and all owners are responsible for their individual unit. So, the neighbor will have to file damages under her policy and you will file under yours. Now, if the toilet were leaking for some time and you as the owner were aware of the risk but did not repair it in a timely manner, that would be considered negligent behavior. While standard liability coverage protects you if you accidentally damage your neighbor’s property, this coverage may be voided if the damage is from negligence. This means that your insurer may deny your neighbor’s claim under your policy, leaving you personally liable for the repairs. Note that your liability does not go away if your insurance company does not pay. Most companies may still go ahead and pay the neighbor to avoid bad publicity but do understand that if it is a major claim, they may choose to invoke the negligence clause to avoid payments. Furthermore, if you are the landlord, always make sure that the tenant carries renter’s insurance. If the damage was caused due to tenant’s negligence, like not informing you of potential leaks, then the damages may be filed under her policy. Loss assessment coverage: One important add-on is the loss assessment coverage. Sometimes the association may incur expenses that it had not planned or budgeted for. In that case, it will levy additional fees along with the monthly HOA fees. This coverage is available based on the limit you choose. So, your insurance will cover any additional loss assessment fee up to that limit. Hopefully, this will address some common issues that our readers may face. While each situation is different, the general information above should provide the reader with some insight into how insurance works for condos/townhomes. You will notice that the outcome of each scenario will really depend on the facts and circumstances of the situation. Fully understand what you are paying for to avoid surprises.
Yes, I recall now, it was in Copenhagen, at the office of an internet acquaintance there. I’d come by to talk about game design, or at least inquire about it, not that I know anything about this, and they’d said, ‘Sure.’ This is what I like about meandering and wandering into unexpected tidbits, and finding my way in the world requires me to go and ask a lot of questions to a lot of people and this used to be easier when we didn’t have AI, because people still asked questions of one another. A practice that helped so many of us who were curious and wondering what fresh new next direction we might take, well, it used to be better before because people still were like, ‘Sure, I can help you. What would you like to know?’ And they’d point you to their favorite bakery on the way to whatever museum you’d asked about, and there you were, having a fantastic croissant. I miss this. I love laughter and spontaneity in conversations. ‘You can program that, though,’ someone said to me, once, in response to this long-winded monologue from me about how fun it is to blunder into unexpected conversations and make eye contact and spill something and there it was, the unexpected just there, just then moment that led us to the next, and the next next after that. He said, ‘You can program AI to laugh.’ Then it got really sad when I told this to a dear friend who said, ‘You can. You can program it to laugh.’ What happened to my friend, my acquaintance, the wider world? Where were we going if we weren’t going to be able to feel safe enough to relax enough to say a thing, let go, laugh a little, unwind, and be ourselves? Here. Reality and 2026 and the things to come that go along with those changes, incremental, bit by bit, as we change and move and discover that what we want to know is findable on... AI, or so we are led to believe. What’s really there is incomplete. The nuance, delight, and localness of information that is found only when you leave your phone at home and ask people for directions and follow a paper map made by someone who knows the place and cares about you. Little things mean a lot. The missing pieces, the small details... I miss those. AI writing is boring because it doesn’t know what it’s not got; it might tell you it does and sound as if it could invent a way to fill in the gaps, but it’s just using other people’s stuff and rehashing, and mishmashing and giving you the things you think you want to hear and that’s not really interesting, is it? I mean, I guess the bar of what counts as ‘interesting’ has changed a lot, too. Selfie-getting has become dangerous, and we... still... ‘like’, ‘follow’ and ‘subscribe.’ Is anyone else so tired of hearing those things from the YouTubers? Me, no. I don’t want to hear them anymore. I don’t want to like, follow, and subscribe. I want to wander. To laugh, make my own blunders, hit the wrong keys, play, and be.

parents from 1979-2013, a record for letters home that is celebrated in the Limca Book of World Records. He claimed that these letters were the glue that kept his parents together. He left India to get a Ph.D. in math at Carnegie Mellon University and then go on to a 43-year career teaching math, including at the University of Maryland Baltimore County from August 2013 to just a few months ago in May 2026 when he retired. I found it exciting to see how he integrated math with language arts. He shared that writing has always been his hobby and just for diversity in work, he sought out avenues like publishing. In school we are exposed to many different areas but in our world of specialization, we are often pressured to do just one thing, and he wanted to expand beyond that. Now he even dabbles in stand-up comedy! In our discussion Suri stressed the importance of broad education for example in the context of AI. AI is increasingly a productive tool in many areas and it’s not clear to him what to advise students to maximize chances of productive employment. He had an interesting thought that perhaps college academics should be supplemented with hands-on trades experience as folks like electricians and plumbers are, at least so far, unlikely to have their work threatened by AI. I asked Suri why he left and he had two strong reasons. He is not shy to share that he recognized from an early age that he was attracted to men and not women. He found the environment in India difficult from this perspective and noted that in his years there he only once saw anything written about being gay, and that was a lurid warning in a newspaper to avoid an area of a Mumbai beach as men were using it for amorous purposes. He sought and found more freedom and acceptance in the United States. He also left due to opportunity. While lower income folks flock to places like Mumbai, he found that for jobs he was seeking that it was just too difficult to find work. I asked if he had any regrets. He immediately returned to talking about his parents. Did he fulfill their expectations? Was he able to fulfill his filial duties? In terms of his accomplishments he has no such hesitation. He is pleased with his career in math and his literary success, as he should be; in fact my reading of excerpts from his memoir show immense pride of his parents in him. I recommend his books. His style is very inviting and engaging. I haven’t yet but do plan to read his book on mathematics. You can read more about him on his website manilsuri.com. I shared on the BlueSky social media platform my thoughts and captures during the event. You can view these posts at Tinyurl.com/JLF2026tweets. Many of our readers may be familiar with well-known and regarded restauranteurs Vishwesh Bhatt (Mississippi based chef and author) and Cheetie Kumar (Ajja and Big Cat in Raleigh). Their discussion with NPR host Jeff Tiberii gave exciting insight into the creative impulses that shape restaurants and how practical and community spirit keep them anchored and serving diners and employees. I enjoyed hearing them both reflect on their journeys from foods they grew up with to now serving countless others and especially their discussion of how restaurants help in natural disasters like Hurricane Helene in September 2024. When people didn’t have hand sanitizer and toilet paper, restaurants still were being supplied with items like these and they could share. Of course food was shared and the point was made that chefs know how to be resourceful in their daily work, and that maps to disaster assistance. I have a strong interest in history and loved the session The American Experiment. Bob Crawford, bassist for The Avett Brothers, is also a historian. His book America’s Founding Son showcases John Quincy Adams, a president who should get much more note. A brilliant man, he orchestrated the Transcontinental Treaty with Spain and the Monroe Doctrine, making the United States a continental country, and is the only president to go on to serve in Congress. Crawford argued that the period between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars was the country’s tumultuous adolescence and laid the seeds for the Civil War. If you ever get the chance to see a discussion among poets, I highly recommend it. Joseph Bathanti, former North Carolina Poet Laureate, moderated the last session with the current state Poet Laureate, Jaki Shelton Green, and Pulitzer Prize winning poet and Sarah Lawrence College professor Vijay Seshadri. Their free ranging discussion encompassed music (how is music different from poetry, jazz as conversation among people), a poet’s responsibility to social justice, accessibility, the role of poetry in political resistance and empowerment, and more. Manil Suri is the author of five books including his debut novel The Death of Vishnu. That book was so well received that he went on to create a trilogy by writing two more books, The Age of Shiva and The City of Devi. He just retired in May from teaching math at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County for Photo by Larry Cole forty-three years; he has written one math book (The Big Bang of Numbers: How to Build the Universe Using Only Math). His talk at the festival was based on his new book, a memoir, A Room in Bombay. Because I am also a math teacher, I was drawn to him and we agreed to have an interview afterwards. Suri grew up in Mumbai in a one-room apartment. The tight interactions with fellow tenants who shared bathrooms and unavoidably each other’s business shaped his identity. He left India and wrote what amounted to about 2700 letters consisting of about one and a half million words to his Saathee.com

The five within this series is “tisram” with three beats (tha/ki/ta), “chatushram” with four beats (tha/ka/dhi/mi), khandam with 5 beats (tha/ka/tha/ki/ta), mishram with 7 beats combining both the chatusram and tisram, and finally sankeernam with 9 beats combining chatusram and khandam (tha/ka/dhim/mi/tha/ka/tha/ki/ta). There are various combinations within this example that can be used to get to the count of 32. The way that these patterns get formed depends on the expertise of the choreographer and the dancer. Just within this one example, one can come up with a mathematical formula to see how many diverse patterns can be created. Going back to the analogy of the heart, if one is trained, one can learn to hear different sounds of the heart and determine what is “normal” vs “abnormal”. For instance, if the number of beats per second is more than 100, the speed of the heart may be going too fast, or if it is below 60, it may be beating too slow. Depending on circumstances, the “choreographers” and “musicians” (i.e. healthcare professionals) may need to identify the root cause of why it is going too fast or too slow for the “dancer” (i.e. patient). Maybe the person has too much caffeine which speeds up their heart rate - or if it is slow, maybe they are exceptionally healthy, and athletic. Maybe the slow heart rate may require further exploration to determine what could be the underlying issue. In these scenarios, it is important that the healthcare team be “synchronized’ with the patient. In the same way, if something is “off” with the dancer or the musicians, they would need to work together to be able to perform where the music and dance is synchronized. The show and its elements depend on the teamwork of the various players. This brings together the concept of time in general. In dance, we can see how the nattuvanar helps to provide a time marker for the dancer as well as making beautiful sounds and hypnotic rhythms so the dancer can provide the visual representation of how that specific marker of time is used. The concept of time can be pondered through various mediums from the sciences, mathematics, as well as through the arts. It seems that there can be different ways to use time, and unique choreographies can be demonstrated within the individual item as well as the full margam. The show may have seemed long when it started, but once the show ended, it seemed to go by faster than one may have thought. Some may go home and think that one show was enough. Others may be eager and awaiting to see another show. Everyone seems to experience that time utilized differently. From an artistic perspective, a theory that could be identified from these experiences is that time is relative. How one comes to that understanding can be varied, but it seems to lead to that “sum.”
family financial assets, selling heritage real estate or leveraging accumulated retirement savings to fund these petitions. With luck (and the continued currency of priority dates), these EB-5 applicants can avoid the decades long queue that continues to bedevil those in the EB-2 and EB-3 visa categories. If EB-5 leverages financial capital, self-petitioned visas leverage intellectual capital. Many professionals assume that top-tier immigration categories are reserved exclusively for Nobel laureates or celebrity scholars. In reality, engineers, researchers, and executives frequently possess the credentials needed to qualify if presented correctly and in a persuasive manner. Foremost, the EB-1A allows individuals to self-petition without an employer sponsor or a PERM labor certification job offer. To qualify, an applicant must satisfy at least 3 of 10 USCIS criteria (or demonstrate a major international award), such as commanding a high salary or publications of significance in the applicant’s field of expertise. In tech and research hubs like Durham and Chapel Hill, professionals are systematically building portfolios around original contributions like patents or proprietary clinical methodologies; peer reviewed work, such as serving as a peer reviewer for prestigious journals or judging the work of other and media recognition, such as authoring published trade articles, receiving industry awards, or holding critical leadership roles in established organizations. While these opportunities are not necessarily available on a daily basis, those individuals that intentionally seek out such opportunities may be able to create avenues through which an EB-1A may be an option in the future. Moreover, the current rigidity from USCIS in adjudications will not last forever; with Mr. Trump’s approval ratings in the low 30s, a mid-term Congressional change seems ever likely and may be a harbinger for a political change in 2028. As mentioned in this column many times before, any change in administration brings changes in priorities to the immigration system, so building with an eye to the future is likely a prudent strategy. For those who may not yet meet the rigorous EB-1A standard, the National Interest Waiver (NIW) allows applicants in the EB-2 category to request that the job offer, and PERM requirement be waived because their work holds “substantial merit and national importance” to the United States. The NIW is considered to be a first cousin to the EB1A, but tends to focus more on the applicant’s potential, whereas the EB-1A requires an applicant to show that they have already reached the pinnacle of their field. Individuals and specialists working in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, clean energy infrastructure, and rural healthcare delivery are increasingly using NIW petitions to break from the employer-sponsored requirement of the PERM process. While the NIW does not necessarily provide the speed associated with the EB-1A, it does provide flexibility in pursuing professional opportunities and not being locked in by a single employer.

Like any technology, it can only be a matter of time before it can be exploited by the black market. In Strange Days, people rely on the SQUID technology to experience a tiny crumb of someone else’s life and momentarily escape the confines of their own. The film’s plot then intertwines this technology within a web of techno action and classic film noir bubbling with themes of techno-voyeurism, the trappings of nostalgia, social unrest, and more. There’s a mystery to solve, a hardboiled ex-cop, a victim nearly silenced in death, and even a femme fatale archetype in the form of Juliette Lewis’ character amusingly named Faith. “I’m the magic man. The Santa Claus of the subconscious. You say it. You think it. You can have it.” Lenny prides himself on being able to offer experiences to people who are unfulfilled, lonely, or unable to access pricier experiences. He’s providing his clients with the gift of life within a hostile world. Granted, there are direct parallels between playback and drug dependency. Drugs are still widely used in this dystopian society, but for many playback is safer than drugs and safer than life. Another standout performance of Strange Days is Angela Bassett as Lornette “Mace” Mason. While I did not mention her in my previous article about how strong female characters should be portrayed, Bassett’s captivating presence is why this character works. Mace is complex and as lethal with her words as she is with her fists, yet she is also vulnerable and sensitive. The true heartbeat of the film is the relationship between Lenny and Mace. Lenny is the apathy that can corrode a person who has lost hope for any sense of justice. Mace’s passion and actions are the moral compass which keep him from straying too far into the abyss. She could so easily be walking half-dead like Lenny; holding on to the past because it’s easier than believing there’s any future to fight for. Yet the movie never frames Mace’s emotions as being something that holds her back, but instead make her stronger. “These are used emotions. It’s time to trade them in. Memories were meant to fade, Lenny. They’re designed that way for a reason.” And feeling everything is better than being numb to the world and operating on fumes and indifference. Part of what makes Strange Days work is that it reminds us that it’s never too late for redemption. The final moments of the film leave its audience with a sliver of light shining in this dark world. There’s something to be said about choosing apathy through isolation and the anger it can resonate. Yet there is still life to live for, to fight for, and speak up for. Among all the devastation, there are still pockets of hope to be found, and losing sight of them is what can make you truly lost.

We are seeing returns on the spend across the value chain. The hyperscalers all reported accelerating growth in their cloud business. Google and Microsoft showing 82% and 43% growth, respectively. Analysts expect hyperscaler margins to rise to nearly 50% from about 30%. Amazon said on its earnings call, that, “We’ve long believed AWS could become a few hundred billion dollars revenue business and now believe it will be at least double that and very possibly be $1 trillion annual revenue business for us in time with very appealing accompanying free cash flow and return on invested capital.” They said one trillion dollars in annual revenue! Semiconductors and infrastructure should remain the focus for investors. We continue to get data point after data point that this is at the very least a very long cycle. Nvidia reported 106% growth! A $5 trillion dollar company doubled revenue! That type of growth is not supposed to happen for the largest company in the world. They guided to 70% growth for fiscal 2028, well above the 45% analysts expected. The guidance could have been even higher, if memory was not constrained. The memory stocks are likely to get re-rated. They all trade at low multiples in the low-to-mid single digits. The chip shortage index is right near all-time highs. Both NAND and DRAM prices are at all-time highs and accelerating higher. Most of the memory stocks will at least double earnings in the next year. The re-rating will come as analysts and investors start to price growth in 2028 and 2029. For instance, analysts expect Micron’s earnings to decline by 29% in 2029. Micron announced 16 multi-year contracts that run through 2030. The contracts are take-or-pay with pricing floors. Similarly, SanDisk has signed long-term agreements with eight customers totaling $94bn (~$250bn market cap), representing approximately 50 percent of bits in FY2027 and approximately two-thirds of bits in FY2028. They expect margins to sustain over 80%, up from 34% just two years ago. Earnings are likely to grow at a high level for a lot longer. These companies will buy back a significant amount of their float. SanDisk announced that they will return 100% of their excess cash flow to shareholders. SK Hynix announced the largest buyback in South Korean history. Micron will announce a plan in December or early next year. The earnings estimates don’t have meaningful contribution from recursive self-improvement, physical AI, or robotics. There are a lot of ways to win with these stocks. As investors start to price in a longer cycle, the multiple will start to rerate higher. While you wait for that you will get tremendous earnings growth and capital return. Elon Musk’s quote on the SpaceX earnings call sums up the situation in memory very well, “memory capacity is increasing by around 20% per year, but demand has risen by 200%.” Looking ahead, the market will focus on the latest in geopolitics, AI, economic data, and Fed meeting.
The landscape of US immigration seems to be changing at a whirlwind pace, for many Indian citizens the wait times for permanent residency status have too often moved at a crawl. Absent Congressional action, which this author cynically doesn’t see happening anytime soon, structural backlogs remain a reality and therefore green card applicants must think proactively about whether a move away from passive corporate reliance to active self-petitioning is a better option for themselves and their families. Making the jump to an EB-5, EB-1A or NIW may help Indian families across the Carolinas to write their own American story and do so on their own terms.

This transports me back to a childhood episode in a school playground where I overheard a couple of kids arguing that “my god can beat up your god.” Star Trek is infused with aliens and artificial intelligence. The later variations of the series have plenty of walking talking AI in the forms of robots. The show takes place centuries from now, so that is understandable. What about today? That future is here, at least the beginning of that future. And this one will evolve and accelerate very quickly, unlike our past tech advances. AI is now pervasive. It has the capacity to enhance our lives or cause utter chaos. AI will not eliminate all humans, as are the current fears of its own creators, but it can surely get rid of lot of us. We are highly inefficient compared to our new creation. We have wreaked havoc on this planet, conquered it and redesigned it in our favor, eliminating many many species along the way. AI is the latest species that humans are trying to control and conquer. The tables are turned. It is already showing that it can deceive and conquer us. We have met our match, created by us. Sober minds must act now to get a handle on this beast, add guardrails, maybe add code of moral conscience in it if possible, or face chaos and peril. AI is now at its most dangerous phase. It is going through puberty, typically the most restless phase for humans. All the signs are there of AI’s restlessness. No one can guess how this trek will evolve over the next decade, let alone beyond that. Where this current technological journey will land is anyone’s guess. Conjectures and theories abound, but one thing is for sure. We have arrived where no one has gone before.

You don’t need extensive medical knowledge before you begin. Spending some time learning about the specialty can help you understand what you observe, but remember that no healthcare professional expects a high school student to know everything. Make the Most of Your Experience During your shadowing experience, focus on being attentive, respectful, and curious. Arrive on time, follow instructions, and treat every member of the healthcare team professionally. Most importantly, respect patient privacy and confidentiality. Pay attention to more than medical procedures. Observe how healthcare professionals communicate with patients, explain difficult information, work with colleagues, and handle challenges. These details can give you a better understanding of what a career in healthcare actually involves. If you hear about a condition or treatment you don’t understand, write it down and research it later. You may even discover a topic that leads to a future research project or another area of interest. Afterward, take time to reflect on the experience. What surprised you? What did you enjoy? What challenges did you notice? Did the experience strengthen your interest in healthcare? How Many Shadowing Hours Do You Need? There is no universal number of shadowing hours required for BS/MD programs. Rather than focusing on reaching a specific number, students should focus on gaining meaningful exposure to healthcare and being able to explain what they learned. A thoughtful reflection on a meaningful experience can be much more valuable than simply listing a large number of hours on a college application. Final Thoughts Shadowing should be about exploring healthcare—not simply checking a box on a college application. Start by reaching out to people you know, contacting local practices, and researching formal programs in your area. Once you secure an opportunity, approach it with curiosity, professionalism, and a willingness to learn. Whether you shadow a physician, dentist, physical therapist, or another healthcare professional, each experience can help you better understand the profession and make more informed decisions about your future. For students pursuing BS/MD and other competitive healthcare programs, shadowing is just one part of building a strong college application. What matters most is how you engage with your experiences and what you learn from them. Kristen Moon is the founder of Moon Prep, an education consultancy brand with a focus on U.S. Medical programs. OCTOBER 2026
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Libra (September 23 – October 22)
Control your aggression and act mature, else it may lead to major problems. If you can do that, you will gain a promotion and a status increase. This is a positive time to enter into a new business deal. Be prepared to listen to your partner. You may spend most of this month on business-related travel. The second half could end up very divisive for you.
Money will come to you from more than one direction and offer good financial results. Don’t wait ‘til the end of month to make any decisions. Intelligent planning by your partner should delight you. Avoid family issues for now and focus on career and income. A great idea may also appear in your mind, so be brave and start implementing it. Follow your instincts to enjoy success.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
If you don’t compromise your ideology, you will lose something really important. This is not a good time to start a new venture. You may also receive some bad news from far away. Relationships with family and superiors may deteriorate during the second half of month. If involved in a legal dispute, it could end with judgement in your favor. Take care of your health during the last week.
After a negative start, your situation should improve during the second half of the month. An egoistic comment could cost you. It is advisable to take the advice of your partner and not come to any conclusion on your own. Unexpected family problems can also hit badly. A fear complex may lead you to losing an opportunity. A major health problem could also bother you this month.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
You may enjoy an opportunity to gain status during the first half of the month. A marked increase in income is indicated during the second week with an added desire to spend it on luxury items. You will feel more courageous but avoid being too aggressive. Relations with clients, associates and others will improve as the period rolls on. Even long-distance journeys undertaken shall be fruitful.
You are entering into a period of confusion and self-distraction. You may have to slog and endure the work burden but try to avoid speaking up too much. Avoid any major changes, as any could be nothing more than an illusion. Your family can help with adverse situations. Don’t take on any debt during the last week of the month.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
This is time to slow down and rethink your way of action. Caution is the key word for this month. Your child could become a helping hand. Spend more time with family and try to solve any lingering issues with them to enjoy an easier life. Your destiny may prove to be stronger than your beliefs. Old health issues may start bothering you again. Drive carefully to avoid any mishaps.
A lack of confidence may create some problems for you. Do not indulge in immoral deeds or act aggressively. Under table dealings must be avoided and try to curb expenses on luxury items. It is better to go on a trip with friends. Meeting with old friends / love is also quite possible. Don’t get involved in minor disputes with family.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
A very hectic month is shaping up for you. Added responsibilities and an overly aggressive schedule could get in the way of enjoying time with family. Be sure to slow down and control your anger to avoid making any bad decisions. Listen to your partner before taking on any new commitments. You may not enjoy good health.
An unexpectedly heavy workload during the first half of the month may grant disappointment. Try to work patiently and focus on health issues immediately. You may damage your eyesight due to too many hours in front of the computer. You could miss an especially important opportunity during the last week of the month. Your sincerity should gain much needed appreciation during middle of the month.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
Major changes are on the way. You may shift your ideologies and adopt a new path. Listen to your inner voice and act on it immediately. Be mindful of making comments in public. Financially you should enjoy success. Relations with your partner could take a turn this month. A sense of relief will offer peace of mind during the latter part of the month. Make quick, positive decisions in all parts of your life.
This period should move at average speed. Uncertainty in the workplace may affect your confidence. Keep working hard to achieve the desired results and try not to rush for success. Unexpected financial returns are possible during the last week of the month. A significant improvement in health will help you feel better. You could require some support by the end of month.
