Drawing Excercise 1 Lines This project tasked us with learning to use our new drafting equiment. We started with vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. The later papers required using our french curves and figuring out how to inset shapes. There was another aspect of this project that focused on equal spacing between lines and consistent line weights. This was not my first time using drafting tools, but I had never focused the other aspects of the project before.

Drawing Exercise 2 Plan, Section, Elevation This project was another that tasked us with becoming more familier with our drafting tools. There was also an element of learning to understand the difference in plans, sections, and elevations. For this project, I was assigned Le Coubisuer’s Villa Baizeau. There was a struggle to ensure that the lines that need to be dark were dark enough. The second part was an enlarged section. This is where there was more struggle with defining the depth of the space in the home.

Assignment 1 Documenting an Object For this project, we were each assigned a tool which we would create elevations and sections of. There was also part of this project that asked for a movement elevation and expressive abstract drawings. It took a while for me to figure out which parts of this nut grinder I wanted to highlight in each of the drawings. The inside mechcanisms of this tool were very difficult to represent on paper. I ended up figuring out a way to cast those mechcanisms to be able to replicate it.

Drawing Excerise 3 Paraline Drawings This project taught us how to work with oblique drawings and various shapes.

It started with basic shapes and then removed and added cubes throughtout the intial shape. I had some diffculty defining depth in the added cubes.

Assignment 2 Space This project asked us to carve away mass to create space. Priorities being the way sunlight would come into the existing space and how a person would exist walking through the space. There was a decent struggle in the sketch process imagining what the product would look like as excavated mass. The use of appetures took time to figure out, however, the way light pulls a person through the space is a exciting feeling.

Assignment 3 Modeling Space This project tasked us with exploring ways of creating space using new materials. We used rockite, arcylic, brass rods, and nylon to explore different forms of tectonic systems. There was an aspect of this project that wanted us to replicate the ideas from the previous project with these new tectonic systems. There was definetly a learning curve with each of the materials, some more than others.

Assignment 4 House of Ruins This project tasked us with creating a structure in a field somewhere in Rhode Island. On this site, there are existing ruins that we needed to be sure to protect. The site was an open area with trees along the east side and a path on the other side of the trees from the field. Another aspect of this project was that it was to evolve from a model from the preivous project. Time was spent defining the tectonic and connecting those tectonics. Once those were figured out, focused turned to making sure this structure would not collaspe on it own weight. When expanding the model from what came out of the sketch process, there was concern about how the joints would come together and continuning the idea of the tectonic into the ramp and supports under the platform. There was a lot of struggle trying to include the ramps, but it was important to me that this structure would be accessible for everyone. Sloping from North to South meant there was no natural shade after about 11 am and it made the inclusion of the ramps more difficult.

Summary

At the beginning of this semester, I had some experience with the designing process and with drafting tools. However, I had never been taught reasonings for certain choices. I’ve learned about tectonic systems, different forms of tectonics, and been able to explore working on slopes. I’ve been challenged in both my drawing/modeling work and in my time management. I am proud of the work I have produced this semester and amvery excited to continue improving over the upcoming years.

ASSIGNMENT #1 - DOCUMENTING AN OBJECT

For this assignment, I had to choose a kitchen tool to document through drawings such as orthographic elevations and sections. The object that I chose was a juicer, which was challenging to document due to its curvature, small gaps, and ridges, as it ultimatley made it difficult to measure.

For this project, I also had to produce a movement drawing, displaying the use and function of the object. As well as an expressive drawing that captures the object’s expression. For my expression drawing, I chose to go the more abstracted route using paint, watercolors, and fruit impressions in order to display the delicious mess that juicers have the power of creating.

DRAWING EXERCISE #3 - PARALINE The last drawing exercise was comprised of drafting axonometric views of a cube and a rectangular prism. The task was to remove and add on cubic units of mass to these forms, and ultimately shearing off a portion of it.

This assignment consisted of creating voids in order to create space, but more importantly how light interacted with these voids and spaces. I designed the voids to intersect so that light will bounce softly through the spaces, while maintaining dramatic moments of illumination. I designed it so as the day passes, light enters through different voids, continuously transforming the mood and use of the space.

ASSIGNMENT #3 - MODELING SPACE

This project foccused on creating different spaces with different materials, primarily focusing on physical model making. For the first part of the project I had to create a rockite, or mass, model (top), in which I wanted to focus on creating complex spaces for light to enter. Then a model made with acrylic, or planes (middle), where I wanted to create space by funneling and layring the planes. Finally, the hybird model (bottom), combing the rockite and acrylic, where I wanted to create segmented spaces through by using both of the materials.

For the second part of this project I had to create three more models. The first model (top) was made out of nylon, and I manipulated the nylon with a copper wire frame in order to create two members that interlock. In the second model (middle), I had to solder brass rod, where I created a system in order to connect each rod toegther since I wanted it to be systematic.

The last model (bottom) is a hybrid model of the nylon and brass rod. My goal was tocreate space by engulfing, therefore, I further developed the system with the brass rods and engulfed it with the nylon wrapping around it.

ASSIGNMENT #4 - HOUSE OF RUINS For the final project, my task was to create a shelter that would shelter a set of ruins and visitors from the changing weather. My goal was to create a safe and welcoming space for people to visit.

I also wanted to make a contnuation of the ruins and explore the idea of corrosion in order to contrast old and new without disrespecting or taking the attention away from the actual ruins themselves. I achieved this by utilizing double curvature and through the materials chosen. Furthermore, the materials I used were tensile membranes supported by slender arcs that are cast into masonry. Together, they shelter and invite people to meander. It was challenging to combine a system to be harmonious . However, I overcame this challenge by creating a contrast with the lightness of the textile membrane and heaviness of the masonry which work together to create a captivating experience.

Looking back at the semester, I believe that I have significantly grown. From starting with just drawing lines to ending with designing a whole shelter, I have learned a wide range of skills and concepts in such a short time. I gained manual drafting skills, model making skills, and I can now grasp architectural concepts like light and space. I enjoyed the fact that I was able to exercise my creativity throughout most of the semester in different ways and magnitudes. Throughout the semester certain challenges did arise such as troubleshooting and shifting my way of thinking , and I am proud of the way I handled these challenges maintaining a positive attitude. Overall, a main lesson that I have learned throughout this semester as a whole is how small details serve a greater purpose even though it may not be apparent in plain sight. I hope to take the foundational skills, concepts, and lessons learned in this semester as building blocks to continue to grow on as I continue my education.

DRAWING EXERCISE 1 DRAFTING BASICS The first exercise was to begin practicing basic architectural drafting, getting acquainted with the starting tools, as well as following instruction.

Three total sheets were made, each with six squares on them, measured out to be equidistant from eacother and the margins. Figure A is the second of the sheets, and features the use of the french curve set. Figure B was the thrid and most elaborate set of squares, the nesting triangular quadrants requiring planning and meauring to accurately depict.

DRAWING EXERCISE 2 PLAN, SECTION, AND ELEVATION

In drawng excercise 2, the first objective was to trace the elevation, section, and plan of a house, for me being The Glass House designed by Lina Bo Bardi. Line weights were extremely important in this excercise, as this was the first time applying them practically in an architectural context. The second, more involved part of the excercise was to take the section that we had traced, and manually draw a new version of it at double the size, as seen in figure B. The organic aspects of the house also made an impact, as the uneven ground plane and the central tree provided an extra challenge.

ASSIGNMENT 1 DOCUMENTING AN OBJECT Assignment 1 asked to take an ordinary object, and fully document it through a series of drawings. Figure A shows the orthographic projections of my object, a small, pop-top waterbottle. the top, front, and side views are depicted, and all relate to eachother in scale and positioning.

Figure B shows the waterbottle in motion, the top of the bottle dynamically lowering and screwing onto the base, and the pop-top feature being shown through the gradual opening of the two parts of the cover. Line weights were utilized to show the passage of time and movement.

ASSIGNMENT 1 CONT. Figure C is a series of section cuts of the water bottle. going from a small cut, to down the middle, to most of the bottle being cut through. This shows the entirety of the object through the progression of these cuts, allowing one to observe the inner workings and complex structure of an ordinary object. The upper drawing of the sheet is a cross-section, and shows the function of the cap more clearly.

Figure D showcases an abstracedt form of the bottle, focusing on general form over accuracy. Through the use of intersecting lines curving when they met the edge of the bottle, the form is revealed.

DRAWING EXERCISE 3 PARALINE DRAWIGS Drawing exercise 3 was a smaller project that focused on practicing paraline, 3-D objects. FIgure A was created through multiple steps, starting was just a 3D square and rectangle with grid patterns over them.

From there, Individual square units were subtracted and added to the overall masses, and finally, a 45 degree cut was made in each of them, resulting in the final product.

ASSIGNTMENT 2 SPACE In assignment 2,the teask was to begin actual design work, focused on the physical foam cube in Figure A. This cube was derived form several bristol paper sketch models, in which the void spaces were what was mapped out. Figure B shows the four main elevations of the model, and how they interact with outside light through shading on the front and back, as well as using scale figures to convery size.

Figure C depicts two sections and two plans of the model, each at different heights and locations so as to map out as much of the space as possible. The plans succeed in showing both the open front space and more concealed back space, while the sections show how people would fit into said spaces.

Figure D is a section oblique, cutting through the same Section 1 of figure C. It was done through mapping out the plave in 2D, and bringing it up and away to give depth. Shading was done on the back again to show said depth.

ASSIGNMENT 3 MODELING SPACE Assignment 3 allowed the exploration of new modeling materials and techniques. Figure A experimented with fabric stretched around wood, creating contained space through the simple elements. Figure B is a hybrid of rockite and acryllic, and aimed to create a snowglobe-like effect through fusing and blurring the lines between the two. Figure C is a purely wooden model, and was inspired from the previous space assignment. The inner wood follows to path of movement rhoughout the past assignment’s model, while the outer wood forms the square around it to contain it and give it structure and place.

ASSIGNMENT 4 HOUSE OF RUIN The final assignment required the creation of a pavillion following the discovery of ancient ruin walls, allowing vistors to observe and experience the structures. The chosen pavillion design was inspired by the fabric model from the previous assignment, and followed the pattern of fabric wrapping around columns. the columns followed a central line, diverging off at moments to create space for new structure. The solumns create the skeleton of the system, whiel the fabric weaves between them, connecting them and giving cohesion to the project, mimicking the movement of the visitor throughout the site. The central pathway is carved one fott into the ground to give the project a valley-like feeling, and vistors are free to roam around beyond the boundaries of the path and pavillions.

ASSIGNMENT 4 CONT. The physical model of the site gives a greater understanding of experiencing the pavillion. One can observe the varying heights of the monolithic pillars, creating a mountainous terrain above visitor’s heads.

The sheltering structures can also be seen in greater detail, remaining simple but effective, blocking the sun at its peak and protecting from the elements in an otherise deliberately open design.

CONCLUSION AND TAKE AWAYS

Throughout this first semseter, I feel I’ve come far in both understanding the basics of architectural drafting, designing, and execution, as well meeting my own personal goals of growth and creativity. I did have some limited experience with drafting prior to this semseter, but what I have accomplished here far surpassed what I thought I was capable of just a few months ago. I feel I am much stronger in my abilities to interpret and translate onto paper, as done in the documenting an object project, and I am proud of the accuracy and thought put into each of those drawings. I had very little physical model making experience prior to the semester, but starting simple with the bristol paper models and building up bigger and more complex helped build my confidence in that medium, to the point that for the final project, I was already confident I could successfully execute two good models after only just planning them out. The same goes for my rough drawings, as I have never been very confident in my sketching until now, where I have been able to consistently practice in practical situations. The sketches for the final project, most notably figures G and H, I was able to get down complex ideas clearly and quickly, which I am proud of. I am excited to work more in model making in the future and want to improve further there, as the process of bringing something I created into the physical world is extremely exciting. Overall, I am happy with the first semester, and am proud with the results of the large amounts of time, effort, and care I put into each assignment.

This drawing exercise was the simplest one we had. Figure 1.1 and 1.2 were really easy to follow the instruction to reach the wanted result. However the most challenging part was to figure out how to use the french curves consistently with the slope. The end result is figure 1.3. What is interesting is that even though all of my class had the same instructions figures 1.1 and 1.2 would be exactly the same, however, figure 1.3 cannot possibly be the same.

This project also helped us understand scale, while it was asking us to double the size of the section, having to use the scale to measure everything.

This exercise helped us learn perspective and 3D. While also calculating how much of the cube we need to remove or add so we follow the instructions properly.

Despite the basic drawings we had to do, elevations, sections and plans (figures 4.4 and 4.5), we had to think outside the box. In figure 4.6 we had to create a drafted drawing which shows the motion of the item. My item has 3 different motions, which is why I drew 3 different scenes around the main one. We were also asked to create a more abstract drawing figure 4.1 showcasing the use of the object. Even though my object is a tool, I decided that in order to actually portray the use of the object, that it holds on to something so tight, that if it were something fragile, like an apple, it would crash.

What I did was create two different floors. The first one, as seen in my plans in figure 5.3 was the ground floor, where you could enter from just the front.

The second floor could be accessed from the stairs (figure 5.5) coming up the first floor. (as also seen in my plans in figure 5.3) then there was also a space you could sit at and some sort of window from the other side of the cube as seen in my elevations in figure 5.4.

Figures 5.6 are the final product, and how my box experiments with light and shadow, seeing the very light parts and the very dark parts.

While figures 5.7 were my initial ideas.

After creating many different designs, I came down to these four, and ended up choosing the first now, which seemed the most interesting and the only one that has potential to create space and circulation. Of course the final design did receive some alterations.

After experimenting with rockite, I landed on a technique that seemed interesting. So instead of using boxes, I used cylinders (figure 6.1). In the acrylic one, figure 6.2, it kept breaking in this specific shape, so I thought to include it in my final model.

The hybrid one (figure 6.3) looked like some sort of oven, using the same technique I used in the rockite, so I used acrylic to add the “trays”. figures 6.2

In the soldered rods (figure 6.4) I wanted to keep the curves I have been using this far, but work with a base, and I work my way up. So I basically took flat rectangles I created, and curved them while adding more and more to create a square shape in the base. In the stretched fabric (figure 6.5) I worked with embroidering.

In the hybrid one (figure 6.6) I used wire to create columns and then I played with vertical and horizontal orientation. What I mean is that they have no correlation whatsoever, however they do need one another to exist. This one was my main inspiration for my final project.

Ruins back home mean a place to sit, relax and enjoy the view for me. so my first idea was that I want to use the ruins with my design and not just shelter them. After getting inspiration from my previous project, I decided to embrace the curved shapes I was already working with, and start slicing them to see what can happen.

After a lot of sketches and ideas (figures 7.1 and 7.2), resulted in these base walls in figure 7.3. I also started experimenting with the roofs having a different orientation that the walls, so pointy instead of curvy. I worked with a couple of different materials, like paper (figure 7.4) and foam board (figures 7.5 and 7.6), making practice models (figures 7.4 and 7.5) before starting my final one (figures 7.6).

The concept in the end I decided would be an art gallery and the ruins would function as benches, as seen in the sketches (figures 7.7). The concept diagrams (figures 7.8) pretty much speak for themselves, involving concepts like different materials used, how the roofs and walls play with shadow and light, the shape and geometry of the building, and the one circular circulation.

The floor would consist of rock plates and it would extend further away from the building, creating little areas for people to exist and walk outside of the walls and around nature.

There is even a tree coming out of the hole of one of the three roofs. Both of those can be seen in the site plan (figure 7.9)

There are roofs, with different elevations. The first and the third are lower than the middle roof, making their way under it and interlocking so therefore the roofs are able to stay up, without bending.

In this assignment we had to document the physical exterior and interior of an object through a variety of drawings such as plans, sections and elevations. The sections shown reveal the interior space of the object in a way that would not be possible to the average human gaze.

MOVEMENT AND ABSTRACTION

Along with this, an abstract piece was required to possibly imagine the object in a scenario that otherwise it would not be in. My abstract piece pushes the viewers mind, and forces them to see similarities between the object and the natural world even through a stark contrast of materiality and location.

For the later parts of the assignment, we had to convey and experiment with movement. Not only with the movement of the object itself, but also in the context of the world, and its interaction with humans.

SPACE ASSIGNMENT

For this assignment we had to carve a space out of a foam cube showing our knowledge and ability to control negative space. This project was meant to teach us how to invision a habitable set of spaces while utilizing unique aperatures.

Along with this, light had to be taken into consideration and utilized efficiently throughout the cube, specifically in the interior.

This assignment was about experimenting with materials and creating a variety of spaces. Each material offered a different type of space, for example, the rockite created heavier spaces, while the brass rods created dainty and light spaces.

HOUSE OF RUINS ASSIGNMENT

For the final project of the semester, we were tasked with creating a design, from scratch, that protected or utilized a set of “newly discovered” ruins in the state of Rhode Island. It was imperative that we took into consideration the natural elements and the surrounding environment when creating our designs. Process sketches, photographs, sections, elevations and plans were required along with a 1/8th, and a final 1/4th scale model of our designs and site.

HOUSE OF RUINS ASSIGNMENT

My inital thought when given this assignment is that I wanted to create a design that would emulate the environment around it, and would integrate the ruins as a part of the interior structure, whilst also highlighting the ruins in some way. So, I created a design that followed the slope of the hill, and dug into the ground, creating a semi underground structure with ramps on either side to enter. Along with this, I created rectangular skylights in the ceiling directly above the ruins. Through these skylights, the sun will shine down and highlight the ruins at different times of the day, or alternatively, will shine in the general area of a ruin. These lights help emphasize the importance of the ruins to the viewer upon entering the room. Along with this, the skylights act as a physical representation of the ruins and their relationship to one another when viewing my design from above.

Drawing Exercise #2 allowed for us to deeply analyze an already build structure. We looked at plans, sections, elevations, and any other information we could find on our given structure. My building was by Le Corbusier. It is called Villa Shodhan and was commisioned in 1951 in India. It consists of Le Corbusier’s trademark style.

This project assigned each student with a household object and allowed them to observe it from various perspectives to then draft elevations, sections, a motion image, and finally an abstract piece. My object was a BEAR sander, used to smooth down surfaces such as wood.

For the movement drawing, I chose to portray the sander closing its latch, and then moving horizontally along a surface. This motion would be demonstrated when the sander is in use. The section and plan are drafted as well. There are 9 sections cut on the shorter side and 3 cut on the wider part. For the elevations, a top view, side view and back view is drafted. The abstract is made of a thin, off white thread embriodered on bristol board to allow for a wood grain look and texture. A small portion of the paper is not embroidered, representing smothed wood that the sander has been used on.

Drawing Exercise 3 consisted of 1012 cubes and rectangles that taught the process of a paraline drawing.

Two different types of paraline drawings were explored during this project. Those being Plan Oblique and Isometric drawings. These taught valuble drafting skills and introduced the concept of scale in drawings.

Space

Concept: Slice

Assignment number five prompted us to create voids throughout a cube. These voids are spaces where people could travel through and have various experiences. My concept, slice, allowed for different perspectives to be introduced to the individual walking through the cube. The large, angled, opening at the front of the structure provides a welcoming facade, which contrasts the rest of the structure.

Concept: Slice

This model represents the action “to slice” through the use of rockite.

This model represents scales through the use of acrylic sheets. Thin, angled acrylic sheets are placed together, creating a flowing motion. This motion is meant to reflect the scales of a fish that slightly overlap but tend to move in one continuous formation.

Concept: Dense vs. Delicate

This model explores the concepts of dense vs. delicate through the use of rockite and the paper quilling method. The density of the rockite and delicate paper have a strong contrast.

Concept: Unfurl This model explores the concept of unfurling through the use of brass rods and the soldering method. By slightly adjusting the angle of the brass rods with each triangle added, a slight srescent shape is constructed at the center of the model. This creates a curved and organic shape out of a material that is often stiff.

Concept: Scale This model explores the concept of scale through the use of acrylic sheets and thin paper strips. The paper is layered within each acrylic sheet which allows for the model to grow in height and support weight. By looking at the model from different angles, various scenes of the model can be viewed.

Concept: Lattice This model explores the concept of lattice with the materials of paper and chipboard, then coated in a black paint to emphasize texture. The “wall” of woven paper allows for a backdrop of a continuous pattern. The organic shape in front of the wall strongly contrasts that.

House of Ruins

Concept: Fluid Permenance

Drawings: Diagrams and Process Work

We were assigned a site in Rhode Island where six four-foot-tall ruins are dispersed across the landscape. The first step of the project was to create a narrative: to interpret what these ruins might have been, what events shaped them, and why they remain in their current condition. I imagined the site as the remains of a historic water-run mill. The six small ruins once shaped and directed water across the landscape, and also stored pieces of machinery used in the milling process. The idea of guiding flow became the foundation for my design. Copper felt important to the concept because it is a material that records time. As it weathers and patinas, it shifts from bright metal to a softer green, gradually blending in with the aged stone of the ruins. Instead of trying to preserve the site in a fixed moment, the project allows both the old and the new materials to age together. Their transformations become a shared narrative.

Overall, I feel that I have grown greatly over the course of this semester and can see specifically where I have made improvements. I have noticed what I need to work on next semester and have taken note of the things that can be improved. For further explortion next semester, I would like to focus on contrast. Whether that be in material, landscape, or something entirely different, I have noticed that I enjoy working on unique projects and I want to explore this next semester. Drawing Excersize 1: Lines The first drawing excersize tought me the foundations of drafting. I learned how to use basic tools such as a led holder, a triangle, a T-square, a french curve, an exactoknife, a led pointer, and an eraser shield. We used these tools to create simple but important drafting concepts such as straight lines, angled lines, curved lines, and dotted or hidden lines. With the first page being the simplest, a combination of angled and straight lines, and the second page implentign curves, the third page was a combination of both involving more complicated instructions in order to create satisfying images.

Drawing Excersize 2: Plan, Section, Elevations Drawing excersize two allowed us to take what we learned in the first excersize and use it practically. Although these drawings are traces, we still used our techniques to create lines to make changes to the original drawings. This was our first look at drawing types that are actually used and the challenges they present. In addition, we also used scale for the first time, learning what it is to actually scale something down and how to physically perform that. By increasing the scale of our section drawing we learned about detail changes and other differences that come at different scales.

Assignment 1: Documenting an Object Our first full assignment was to document a real-life three-dimensional object in multiple two-dimensional drawings.In my case I had to draw on old hand drill, researching the tool deepened my understanding of its usage, parts, and history. We started the drawing process with some simple elevation and plan drawings, the assignment got more difficult as we started to draw sections and plan cuts of the object, having to translate what the inside of the tool would look like. The third drawing was a motion drawings, showing the tool actually being used. These drawings not only advanced my understanding of drawing techniques, but also was a big step forward in my actual skill at these drawings as these were the first fully original drawing sets we did. The motion drawing stands out esspecially as it required a deep understanding of the limits of a drawings and how to push those limits to make the motion believable. the fourth drawing was an abstract drawing, i chose to use my tool itself to create my drawings, using its spring function to puncture paint into the paper. This trained my brain to think about a concept instead of the literal object.

We started by drawing a simple cube to practoce the drawing type, in the second drawing we needed to draw the same cube but with some space removed. This challenged me to think about depth, air-back lines, and change in surface direction. Our third drawing was one of the same cube with space removed in the second drawing, but with the removed space added back onto the cube in different spots. The final drawing was to take the cube from drawing three and make a 45-degree cut in any direction. This was definenently the most challenging drawing of the four but also clearly the most rewarding.

The first challenge is to translate a 45-degree angle onto an object that isn’t at a 90-degree flat orientation. Then you have to have a deep understanding of the inner-workings of the cube you created and how to draw it.

Assignment 2: Space Assignment two began with the creation of multiple study models of separate parts that come together to form one large continuous empty-space. After picking which one we wanted to continue to study we began the process of making a larger model of it out of foam boards, modelling the solid space surrounding the empty space that we made in our study model. This started with one large piece of foam cut into 12 squares, which we would eventually tape together to make a cube. To cut out the empty space we used a combination of multiple tools and techniques. Going square by square we cut out space using heat foam-cutters and olfa-blades. The foam-cutter was a new tool to us and required precision as it is easy to lose control of the machine and ruin the foam square you were working on. Once all of the space was cut out into each sheet I taped my layers together to create one continuous open space.

Assignment 2: Space For the drawings for assignment two it required me to translate my model into a section, a plan, and elevations. These drawings required an understanding of you model and its interior and an understading of how to draw depth especially using air-back lines.

These drawings were our first shaded drawings, which was a challenge as it required an understanding of how the sun would hit your model, what spaces would recieve light, what points were completely blocked or what spaces were only slightly in shade. We went outside with our actual models and by rotating the model we were able to test how the sun affects our models at different times of the day. After picking the time that created the ideal lighting we were able to translate that exact setup on our drawings. The other two drawings are axonometric, one using hidden lines to show all of the space that was removed from the cube, and the second drawings being a section cut. The axonometric section cut was the most difficult part of assignment two. Both of these drawings required a rich understanding of drawing techniques, drawing types, your model, and limitations.

Assignment 3: Modeling Space Assignment three was completely model focussed in which we created 6 models each with its own concept and it begins with two simple models, one using acrylic and one using rockite my concept for both of these models was branch. This was our first time using both of these materials the rockite required the creation of a mould, then mixing with water and pouring into the mould. I loved the rockite process and used it as much as I could for the rest of the semester. Using acrylic was a different story as cutting it was a challenge that was time-consuming and required patience and precision. The next model was a hybrid of rockite and a material of our chooses, I decided to use wood, and my concept was blockade, I used this concept because I took inspiration from a dam blocking the flow of water. The next model was using brass rod and a soldering iron, my conocept for this model was encase, as I used brass rod to surround a ball I made out of brass rod to hold it up. The next model was one using a superstructure and fabric, my concept for this model was void. The last model was a hybrid photo using any two materials from the project, I chose rockite and fabric, as I enjoyed using rockite, and I wanted to further explore fabric. My concept for this model was secure as I used the fabric to create the illusion that it was pulling the whole rockite structure to keep it together. This project tought me to experiment with materials, and it helped me learn what materials I enjoy using, and am good at using.

Assignment 4: House of Ruins Our final project was to create a structure around pre-existing ruins. To start this process I created a series of study models to expirement with how I wanted to approach a spot to view the ruins. My first model was made using wood and acrylic, this would be my last model with acryclic as I found the open air idea more appeasing, however this model pinned wood as my main model material from the start. The concept for my entire project also revealed itself in this initial model, directing view and perspective through using angles, change in scale, and change in elevation. This is mostly done through the angles of the walls, angled inward, the walls act as a scope, focusing the viewer on the viewpoint, while angled outward, the walls open the viewer up at the viewpoint to allow the viewer to view the entire site. My second model was made out of bristol board as a substitute for wood for the sake of time, in this model I began really expirementing with change in elevation with stairs and a higher platform to view the ruins from. The third model changed the “ceiling” of the structure, making it more continuous with the walls. This model allowed me to look at the walls up to the ceiling piece as one, a modular structure, which I built as a fourth model, a repeatable module that would make up my model. The two smaller models I made were to analyze in more detail how the pieces conncect. These study models led to the full model being just a matter of putting the pieces together due to how clear the concepts were.

Assignment 4: House of Ruins The next was to bring together my study models into a model of my structure at a 1/8”=1’-0” scale. I decided on a shape surrounding the ruins with three main viewpoints for viewers to see the ruins and a tunnel-like setup to travel between the viewpoints.

This model is basically taking my modular design from the study model and repeating it to create a larger structure with a floor level to the grade. I also had to create a model of the topography and ruins, cutting out the contour lines out of cardboard and glueing the layers together. This model succcessfully brought together my ideas and brought it to life. The model allows you to view my goals with the perspective and focus changes in the photos I took from where a viewer would be in the structure. I then translated this model onto drawings, two sections, a site plan, and an elevation. The drawings were satisfying to draw as the simple but sharp lines of the model create interesting patterns to draw. The shading on the site plan introduced a different aspect I hadn’t thought about during the study model process, how light interacts with it and creates cool shadows on the floor structure. The final model was a 1/4”=1’-0” scale model of my structure. This model was the culmination of the final project, and it was the final interpretation of all my ideas.

Summary This semester taught me a lot about both model-making and drafting, different tools, techniques, and materials for both modes of creation were a great exploration. My biggest takeaway from the semester was the assignments or excersives I that would be extremely challenging, or things I thought I wouldn’t be able to do were things I excelled at after some thought and trial-and-error. I would love to continue exploring different model-making materials, whether that is continueing using my favorite or learning to love brand new ones. I want to continue making intereesting drawings, continue drawings three-dimensionally or explore other motion to draw. I also want to get a little bit better at focusing when I’m working, I was doing this well at the beginning of the semester and the very end, but for a while it was a real struggle to go to the studio and just get work done, this will be something I can easily solve next semester.

For my second project I replicated a plan, section, and elevation view of the Douglas House by Richard Meier while learning about the importance of these 3 views. I was able to apply my knowledge line weights and other drafting techniques from the first drawing exercise to this project in order to convey important visual information.

PROJECT 3: Documenting an Object Elevation Drawings

For project 3 I was tasked with choosing an object to document through a series of drawings including elevations, sections, and expressive drawings. I chose to focus on a multitool which could unfold to reveal all of its components within.

I began by drawing my tool in 3 views --- front, top, and side. I applied my drafting experience once more, drawing different line weights to convey information about shape and form while carefully measuring my tool to replicate it in elevation view.

The next part of this assignment called for a series of sections that could reveal the inner workings of my object. I combined physical observations with a bit of imagination to produce the mechanisms inside my multitool.

PROJECT 3: Documenting an Object Motion Analysis and Abstract Drawings

My last task in documenting my multitool was to create three expressive drawings: two motion analyses and one absract representation. I chose to capture the circular motions of the multitool unfolding for each motion analysis. These circular motions paired with the pointed nature of the tools inside reminded me of the motion of a clock, which directly inspired my abstract drawing. Using charcoal, alcohol markers, and acrylic paint I was able to create an otherworldly, decomposed representation of the multitool with the essence of a clock, further emphasizing the temporariness and changing of each individual tool included.

Isometric and Plan Oblique Views

After practicing 2D techniques for a while, it was time to move on to 3D drawings. Through a series of drawings I learned how to create 2 different types of paraline views: plan oblique and isometric.

My series of plan oblique drawings started with a 6” cube, which I deconstructed and reconstructed over the next few drawings. I ended the series with a sectional oblique that sliced through the interesting geometry I had developed.

I then switched my view to isometric. This time I bagan with a rectangular prism, and I chose a more organic approach to modifying it than what I did to my cube. After subtracting and adding back to my new form, I wanted to take a circular scoop out of it. After visualizing and sketching how I would achieve this, I layered several pieces of trace paper with my drawings and connected all the dots on an overlaid sheet of vellum.

PROJECT 5: Space

Light Study - Sections and Models In this project I explored interior space and how it is defined by light, shadow, and physical forms. I began to conceptualize a series of rooms through paper models, each focusing on a different keyword theme. In the end I chose to pursue a theme of intersection through a series of large vertical spaces connected by smaller, criscrossing hallways. I conducted a series of light studies through drawing and photography to find a way to restrict and control light as it entered each space.

Final Model

After determining the layout of my interior spaces, I replicated my paper model on a much larger scale by carving voids into a 12” cube composed of layers of insulation foam.

The spaces I carved out become somber places for reflection. My control of light centered around different apertures which let light in at different angles as the sun moves throughout the sky, effectively telling a story about the passage of time.

To further delevop my concept of space, I investigated methods of defining space with different materials. The concept of space is tied directly to materiality through mass, planes, frames, and surfaces. I experimented with rockite, acrylic sheets, brass rods, and fabric to create unique conditions and forms. I considered the properties of each material I worked with and used those properties to define space in a way that no other material could replicate.

Hybrid Models

For the second part of this assignment I created two hybrid models combining features of my individual material models.

I casted rockite around small sqaures of acrylic to create a heavy form with small windows poking through. I then merged the concepts of frame and surface through a combination of brass rods and fabric.

PROJECT 7: Shifting Perspectives Exploring & Conceptualizing Space

My final project led me through a process of designing a built environment around a set of pre-existing ruins. I had to design a public space that offered shelter to the public as well as the ruins, while also directing the focus of the public to the ruins. I began by envisioning a space where you could look down at the ruins from above, and then travel downwards to observe them on a more intimate level. I also wanted to create unique angles to view the ruins from and decided that a circular plan would be an excellent way to achieve this. With all the changes in elevation and angles that would be present in my structure, I titled it “Shifting Perspectives.” I then created a series of sketches and sketch models that defined my interior and exterior space, considering factors of light and shadow, standing versus transitional space, the placement of the ruins, and the sloping nature of the site itself.

PROJECT 7: Shifting Perspectives

Documentation

After thouroughly planning the flow of my interior spaces, I began to draw my final plan, section, and elevation that would serve as the basis for my final model. By using the curvature of the building, the slope of the ground, and factors of light and shadow I was able to create 3 distinct spaces within. I created an atrium for entry, an elevated deck overlooking the ruins, and a dark and sunken pit encouraging close contact with the ruins.

I then incorporated these views into a sectional oblique that revealed each of these factors of defining my interior space.

Closing Statement My first semester of architecture developed my skills throughout every project, each one building upon the last. Learning to draw different 2D and 3D views, methods for photography and light study, lessons in materiality and conceptualizing space all prepared me for my final project, which I would not have been able to achieve as sucessfully at the beginning of the semester. I will continue to explore methods of defining space through my choice of materials as well as through controlling light and shadow. I will also continue to develop my documentation of each project, creating more conceptual pieces to record my thought processes as I progress.

Studying An Object

In this assignment we were given an object to study and create multiple plans and section passing through the object. Adding to this we were to create a veiw of the said object of motion. And lastly, it was said to create an expressive peice tying back to the object. My object was packing tape so i created the plans and sections, for my motion i wanted to express the motion of packaging a box and added the tape folding at the beginning and as you get to the end it stops as the tape has been cut. The expresive was drawn as an optical illusion with a 3D effect using the blue and pinkmarkers. So when you put the 3D glasses on it confuses the brain eve more.

Material Assignment With this assignment we were told to use certain materials to create 3x3x3in. scultptures.

With the first material being rockite i molded multiple square decreasing in size as well as rotating to get a portal effect. The overall materials that was neded were rockite, acrylic, nylon fabric, and copper wire. The 4 materials were split into two and when you made 2 sculptures with the 2 materials you werwe then told to make a hybrid as well. This showed us the Many materials that could be used to created complex structures and how each of theese materials had specific ways to use and mold them .

Documenting Object

For this project, we were given a random everyday object to draft, including elevations, sections, plans, motion drawing, and an expressive/abstract drawing. The object I was assigned was a manual food processor, a mechanism used to chop up food. As you pull the handle, it spins the connected rotating cylander with blades. A challenge I found with this object was how almost every surface is round, so measuring accurately was difficult at times. Despite this challenge, I was able to draft the object and complete the assignment just as any other object.

Space Based off one of the spacial models I built from bristol paper, I created flowing and thoughtful spaces within foamboard to study how light filters into them, at what angles and intensities at different times of day perhaps.

I encountered some roadblocks when drafting sections of my project because since some of the spaces are at different angles, sections become confusing unless a jagged cut line is used. Jagged lines, if properly depicted in a plan, provide the viewer with a clearer image of the section cut.

Modeling Space To begin this project, I picked a concept word to work from, and that was rotate/spiral. During this assignment, I experimented with various materials to create models toying with space. Rockite, acrylic, wire, saudering, and stretched fabric were the materials introduced which I used to create the models. Some of the models came to me very easily, and others took more trial and error, but as a whole, this assignment allowed me to become more comfortable with modelmaking materials and understanding scale.

House of Ruins The previous experimental modelling project inspired me on this assignment, I used and expanded the idea of my hybrid rockite/acrylic/wood model; layering materials based on modernity to tell the story of the ruins, which we were assigned to build around, in a thoughtful and provoking way. To begin, I excavated into the site, revealing layers of dirt, the deeper the older, similar to the way I used materials to construct the building. To satisfy the need for procession, a way to enter the site, I created an experience that starts a ways up the hill, behind the building, where only the wood and glass are visible. Entering a wooded area, the building becomes mostly sheilded from view, with an occasional glimpse through the branches and scrub. As one continues down the path, leaving the wooded area, the full view of the glass roof, wood structure, and stone ruins is exposed, and the path starts to decend into the ground, prompting one to ponder the ruins and their age once they enter the building. This has by far been the most detailed and intricate idea that I have had this semester, but not without much deep thought and brainstorming throughout the entire assignment.

Summary This first fall semester I have learned and grown a great amount. I enjoyed experimenting with different materials making small spacial models, learned everything I know about drafting and adobe platfroms, and analysed and expanded on themes to create dynamic and layered projects.
