“Frogs, toads and the occasionally odd shorebirds passing through all prefer SHALLOW AND WARM WATER. Therefore southwards slopes of zero to 50cm of water (depth) over up to five meters – also called SLOPES 1:10 – ARE MUCH PREFERRED BY THE NATURAL INHABITANTS OF LAKES. The bottom can vary from coarse gravel to fine clay. In one or two years wetland plants and submerged plants will inhabit parts of the shallow waters...”

“...One of the really big problems of these lakes is the LACK OF A NATURAL OR AT LEAST SEMI-NATURAL LITTORAL ZONE... We did experiments on this and based on the results, a few low-water habitats were constructed.

Of course, the total area of habitat created is just a ‘drop in the ocean’ compared to a natural lake, and MUCH MORE WOULD BE A GREAT IMPROVEMENT FOR PIKE AND FOR THE LAKE ECOSYSTEM IN GENERAL. With the amount (of habitat) available now we are not convinced that a viable fish population will be able to exist in the long run.”
