ISSUE 75 November 2026 The community magazine for Ashgate, Barlow, Brockwell, Cutthorpe, Highfield, Linacre, Loundsley Green, Piccadilly and Upper Newbold

Cover: Garry Cooper

Editors letter Hello and welcome to the November edition of S41 Magazine! I’ve recently launched my annual ‘No heating on until November’ campaign at home. Unfortunately, as usual, it’s met with considerable resistance. I’m beginning to suspect the family aren’t fully behind my vision of financial prudence. I was chatting with Jamie from Soresby Street Café (great guy) when he suggested that running a local magazine must be a little like living in the world of Ricky Gervais’s character in After Life. My initial reaction was, “It’s nothing like that!” Then I thought about my diary the previous day: covering the opening of a new padel tennis facility, playing a match, and visiting the home of an 85 year old poet and artist in Barlborough. Perhaps Jamie has a point. My working life certainly involves some unexpected encounters! Thankfully, it’s generally a little more upbeat than After Life! Moving on... Our Christmas Gift Guide is back, and this year it’s packed with real gems. I’ll take two Crooked Spire cushions and a luxury afternoon tea at Koo, please. Add a good book and I’m sorted! Our What’s On section is also bursting with Halloween and Christmas activities, so have a good peruse and see what takes your fancy. Whatever you’re up to this autumn, have a great one.

Cover Artist

Garry Cooper Artist, Poet, Human Words: Simon Paterson Images: Garry Cooper

If you live around Barlow, you may well have crossed paths with Garry Cooper without realising it. Garry has lived here for around 30 years with his wife Fran, and during that time he has filled his life with art, poetry, walking, books and a wonderfully curious way of looking at the world. Garry grew up on Lancaster Road in Newbold, at a time when the countryside was only about 150 yards from his front door. Much of that landscape has since been built on, but his connection with the countryside has stayed with him throughout his life. He left school and started work at 16 at the coal board plant in Wingerworth. His working life then took him through a number of different jobs, including Robinsons, the water board and eventually education, where he worked in Personnel; an early version of HR. It was a busy job. During the busiest periods, Garry could dictate around 50 letters a day and take as many as 30 phone calls an hour. Eventually, though, his eyesight became a serious problem and he nearly lost his sight. Reading became increasingly difficult, and he retired at just 50. That was when another part of Garry’s life really began to take shape. “I was always interested in art,” he tells me. “I was always interested in different cultures.” His interest goes right back to childhood. Garry remembers watching his grandfather draw a swan when he was around six years old. “I thought, that's terrific.” That moment stayed with him. He had always done bits and pieces of drawing, without any formal tuition, throughout his working life, but with a job and children, finding the time was difficult. Retirement gave him the opportunity to take it much more seriously. Page 6

Today, his home is full of his work, with paintings and drawings seemingly everywhere. He works with pencils, pens and acrylic paint, partly because acrylic dries quickly, and his work covers a huge range of ideas and styles. One of the things that fascinates Garry is the way art can communicate without necessarily explaining everything. He has a particular interest in abstract art, symbols and the way people represent animals and the natural world. That interest has even found its way into his own work through footprints. “When I’m tracking animals, I’m looking at footprints,” he explains. “They’re not the animal. They represent the animal.” It’s a lovely way of describing his approach to art. A footprint can become a symbol, the symbol can become an idea, and before you know it, you’re looking at something completely different. Garry also likes what he describes as a naive style of art, because it gives him the freedom to experiment and combine different ideas. That sense of curiosity carries over into his writing. Garry has also done lots of creative writing throughout his life, but he really started writing poetry after retiring. His poems can be thoughtful, observational and, importantly, funny. He enjoys playing with words and structure, and believes poetry shouldn’t become too precious. His influences include Shakespeare, classic literature and history. The first book he remembers reading was *Treasure Island*, followed by *The Pickwick Papers*, and he still enjoys historical fiction. He also has a wonderfully practical view of poetry. For Garry, there needs to be something

www.s41local.com

behind the words. An idea, a feeling or simply a good laugh. That combination of art, words and curiosity can be seen in Unfamiliar Mindscapes, a selection from his vast store of poems. The title came from an older publication called Familiar Landscapes, a collection of his prose and drawings, which was discovered by his friend Ingo. The new title stuck. And perhaps it sums Garry up rather well. He has spent much of his life looking at familiar things and finding something unfamiliar within them. His connection with the countryside is a big part of that. Together with his beloved dog, a collie, he has walked enormous distances over the years, with one estimate putting the total at around 45,000 miles. Almost all of his drawings feature a man accompanied by a dog. These days walking is more difficult, but the landscapes, paths and places around Chesterfield and Barlow remain a huge source of inspiration. Garry has two daughters and several grandchildren. He speaks with enormous pride about his family. One of his daughters has built a career around improving accessibility for disabled people.

Hill When I was a young man, the work-world was grey I squandered my youth, for I laboured each day Of work there was plenty, and I had my fill But happiness dwelt with a dog on a hill Here’s my middle years, and there’s still no respite The wolves of the city, they snarl and they bite They hunt for my mind, and they feast on the kill Whilst happiness lies with a dog on a hill Now I am old, and my labours are done Some have learned many things, I have learned one To walk in the heather, to follow the rill Where happiness lies with a dog on a hill Lord of all wild things, listen, I pray Let my children learn to spend each precious day Where everything’s quiet, where everything’s still Where happiness lies with a dog on a hill

It is clear that family, place, nature, art, literature and humour have all played their part in shaping Garry’s work. And now, at 85, he is still drawing, painting, writing and looking at the world slightly differently to the rest of us. Which, when you think about it, is probably exactly what an artist should do. A big thanks to Garry’s friend, Ingo, for championing Garry and encouraging him to share his talents with the world. Garry’s book Unfamiliar Mindscapes is available from him directly on: 0114 2891288 Priced at £5 All proceeds go to local charities.

Film

Eddie Waller

Not such a bad apple!

Words: Paul Chapman Images: Paramount Pictures & Eddie Waller

On a Monday afternoon I spent two hours of my working day with Saoirse Ronan and, local lad - Eddie Waller, not in the flesh but watching ‘Bad Apples’, Jonatan Etzler’s dark comedy thriller that looks at what can go wrong with the teacher student relationship. Eddie Waller is a local lad who, lives in Brampton, attends Brookfield Community School and has secured an impressive role on the big screen and will shortly be appearing in the BBC TV series Sherwood, when it returns later this year. At one point in the film Saoirse’s character, Maria, says of Pauline, one of her students, ‘Let her sing, she might be the next Meryl Streep or Angelina Jolie’, this seemed fitting as I sit with Eddie and Mum, Amy, at Board & Bean to find out more. Although, after watching the film, I was a little concerned Eddie might throw my iPad across the room and start swearing at me! I couldn’t have been more wrong. Is this your first big screen movie and how did you land the role working alongside such a renowned actor as Saoirse? “I auditioned at a drama school and didn’t know it was connected to an agency so was surprised when they called and asked me to send a self-tape, a prerecorded audition I send in. “There were six auditions, three tapes and three in person. I met Saoirse at the last in person audition and by this time it was down to me and one other lad. After the audition we tried not to think about it and to assume it wouldn’t happen,” says Eddie. “Then, I was getting ready for football the Wednesday before Christmas and I got the call saying I’d been cast as Danny. It was a real shock, to be selected from Page 14

thousands that applied, it felt a bit weird.” The filming took six weeks down in Bristol, with Mum or Dad, Eddie was out of school for four weeks of this and explains how he focused on his character Danny. “Danny is an angry kid, but I tried to create a back story to explain his anger, an anxiety that resulted in his decisions rather than just being angry.” In the film Danny smashes quite a lot of things up, “I’m not like that, it was fun but switching in and out or character is hard, especially when you’re playing someone you’re not familiar with but it helped being really well supported by an acting coach during filming.” I’m no film critic but I think Eddie did an excellent job, his character Danny is believable and complex, the character walks a thin line between, an angry, scary teenager and someone who is vulnerable and likeable. Working alongside Saoirse Ronan who is a Golden Globe winning and four times Oscar nominated actor for films like Atonement, The Lovely Bones, Lady Bird and Little Women and one I didn’t know, the ‘Psycho Killer’ video for Talking Heads, it must be a little daunting? “Saoirse attended the last audition, so I had met her before filming started, she was amazing to work with and yes it was a bit strange at first, but I soon found it easy, just like working with any actor really.” So how did you catch up on missing your schoolwork? “I had a tutor who was also my chaperone whilst on set so I was kept up to speed with my education, school have also been really supportive through this, so I must say thanks to them.

Film “I also play guitar and sing backing vocals in a local band, Strophic, we’re quite new but I love being part of this and being on stage,” adds Eddie. I asked what inspires Eddie and if there was a film he’d recommend we all watch? “Mega Mind, is my favourite film, it’s an animated comedy with Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt, I love comedy, it’s a genre I love. “Away from this it’s TV shows that I go to, things like The Inbetweeners, Breaking Bad, The Peep Show,” says Eddie. It’s amazing to see Eddie secure such a high-profile role and testament to what a great actor he is, even at such a young age. How do your friends react? “They’ve been really good, a bunch of family and friends went to Cineworld to see the film together and they really enjoyed it,” says Eddie. I think my wife and daughter were at this same screening, they were clapping and cheered for Eddie as the credits rolled. Eddie’s also had three people approach him after recognising him as ‘the kid from the movie’. Fame and fortune await, and we couldn’t be prouder. “I think they were a bit surprised when they saw the film, I don’t think they realised I was co-starring alongside a Hollywood actor, it’s been really hard not letting anyone know until the trailer was released.” Eddie was just 13(?), in year eight when filming took place in March 2024, and now in year 11 and looking for his next role whilst preparing for exams and settling into A levels next year. I asked about his first stage role, Eddie laughs, “I started out in the ‘Enormous Turnip’ on stage at Westfield School, aged four.” “I joined Inspirations Theatre Company and from age six performed in shows including The Sound of Music, Moana, Aladdin and Chicago, I also won the award for best youth musical for 13: The Musical whilst with Inspirations Theatre Company.

Amy commented, “Eddie has always kept his feet on the ground, he enjoys what he does and as a family we’ve always been supportive of what he’s done.” Away from acting Eddie enjoys his football, playing with Strophic and living life in Chesterfield. Unfortunately, by the time you read this is, Bad Apples will probably have completed its run at the cinema and you’ll have to wait until it’s released on a streaming channel, probably Paramount as it’s a Paramount film. In the meantime, you’ll be able to see Eddie on TV in series three of the BAFTA award winning show, Sherwood, due for release on the BBC before the end of the year. It’s fantastic to see local talent on stage and screen, and I wish Eddie all the best of luck with his future career and hope to sit with him again in a few years, perhaps after his first screen award? Make sure you seek out the film and watch Sherwood… and most importantly spread the news of this talented new actor that you’re proud to say, lives round the corner in Chesterfield. Thanks to Eddie and Amy for their time.

“I’ve been in all the school plays at Brookfield, and I love to be on stage.” I asked if he was hardwired to act? “Eddie has always been a little eccentric,” says Mum Amy. “He has an amazing level of quiet confidence.” Page 16

13 Bends Design Celebrates Ten Years of Creativity Words: Paul Chapman Image: Helen Rowan Photography

I first met Kelly Sheldon (or Kelly Bond as she was then) when I was looking for prices to print a local magazine I had an idea about creating. Kelly was working for a graphic design business on Chatsworth Road, and neither of us could have known where that first conversation would lead. A few years later, Kelly ended up working with me on the magazine before eventually going it alone with her own business, 13 Bends Design. Today, it’s lovely to share the same creative space in town. Creativity has always been a big part of Kelly’s life. “At the age of 16 I started an apprenticeship with Richard Duszczak’s Cartoon Studio based on Saltergate,” she tells me. “Richard employed me on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) back in the nineties and I trained to be an editorial cartoonist.” That first job involved producing cartoons for print, greetings cards, magazines and books, something she has continued throughout her career. You’ll probably recognise her work, as Kelly produces the cartoons for each edition of S40. Kelly worked for local design businesses, and even with me at S40 Local, before deciding to establish her own design and illustration business. As 13 Bends Design celebrates ten years in business, Kelly is pleased to reach this milestone in such a competitive field. 13 Bends Design creates graphic design, logos and brand identity, bespoke illustrations and, more recently, visual note art. Visual Note Taking is an interesting way of creatively capturing meetings, events, data and discussions, helping businesses and organisations record ideas and feedback in a way that’s more engaging and memorable than pages of written notes. Kelly explains that visual notes often give a voice to people who feel they aren’t listened to. Story gathering and listening are her favourite elements of this work. She has created visual notes for community groups, charities, conferences, team-building days, schools, the NHS and, recently, a large charity ball in Manchester. Page 20

“I often feel like I have my fingers in too many pies,” Kelly laughs. “But I enjoy it and feel like I’d get bored if I did just one thing.” There’s another important part of Kelly’s story. She is hard of hearing and sight impaired, living with Usher Syndrome, a rare genetic condition which causes hearing loss, progressive vision loss and can also affect her balance. There is currently no cure, and Kelly has had to continually adapt as the condition progresses. Despite this, creativity, work and family life remain a huge part of who she is. Kelly hopes that being more visible and talking about Usher Syndrome will raise awareness. Away from 13 Bends, many local people will know Kelly and husband Chris as The Shambles, with Kelly on vocals and Chris leading on guitar. The couple live in Brampton with their two children and are very much part of the local community. Around here, there’s a good chance you know someone who knows one of them! If you follow her social media, you may have seen the cartoons she recently produced for the Cure Usher Ball at The Manchester Deansgate Hotel. Kelly was approached by actor Mark Jordon to get involved, and the resulting artworks were auctioned at the event, raising an impressive £1,500 towards the charity’s fundraising efforts. Back at home, Kelly continues to work with local businesses, including Brampton Brewery, Junction Bar, Ingmans and Junction Arts, producing artwork, design and branding. And then there’s the magazine that started our working relationship all those years ago. It’s a funny old thing when you look back. What began with me asking a graphic designer for printing prices has turned into years of working together, countless cartoons and, eventually, sharing a creative workspace in town. Ten years of 13 Bends Design is certainly something worth celebrating, and if you’re looking for a real person with real creative ideas rather than another AI-generated image that looks suspiciously like everything else on the internet, perhaps it’s time to give Kelly a call. www.13bendsdesign.co.uk 07533 359219

The school’s youngest children will also perform a simple harvest play based on *The Lonely Scarecrow* by Tim Preston, a story which explores friendship and how, through kindness, we can make sure everyone feels included and valued. “These children will only have been in school for a few weeks and we are already incredibly proud of them,” Jo added. As part of the Harvest Festival, Westfield will once again be collecting donations of food and toiletries for Pathways of Chesterfield, a local charity supporting people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover. “Pathways provides practical support, housing advice and a safe place for people experiencing housing difficulties, with the aim of ensuring everyone has somewhere to call home,” said Jo. There are some things about having children at school that you know you’ll remember for years to come, and Harvest Festival at Westfield Infant School is definitely one of them. I remember the Harvest Festival from when Florie was at Westfield. It’s such an important part of the children’s journey at the school. The fact that it supports Pathways, a local homeless charity, while also teaching children about kindness, community and helping others, is incredible. This year’s Harvest Assembly has a particularly lovely theme: belonging. Jo Nash, one of Westfield’s teachers (and Florie’s hero), explained that the school is currently working towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award, with the children exploring what it means to belong, why this is important for our wellbeing, and how everyone has the right to feel safe, valued and included. “The assembly will be performed by our Key Stage 1 children and shared with their parents,” said Jo. “Throughout the assembly, the children Page 24

“We collect each year for this charity and our generous community always amaze us with their donations.” The children have also been making thoughtful connections between Harvest, sharing what we have with others and the importance of helping people feel that they belong within their community. “It’s been lovely hearing their thoughts and seeing them develop an understanding of how small acts of kindness can make a real difference,” said Jo. Florie has moved on now, but I still have very fond memories of her time there. Harvest Festival might be about celebrating the food and produce we have, but at Westfield it also becomes a lesson in empathy, kindness and community. And if you can teach children from such a young age that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and that they belong, while encouraging them to think about those who may be struggling in their own community, that’s a pretty important lesson to take with them through life.

Home Start High Peak Volunteers Please Step Forward Words & Images: Home Start

Home Start High Peak is celebrating some fantastic news, they have secured funding from the National Lottery and now it's joined by BBC Children in Need to help them develop support for families across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. This funding is an important step forward for Home-Start High Peak as they continue to grow their service in the area and reach more families who may benefit from a little extra support. Home Start supports families who are facing challenges in their lives. Sometimes having someone to listen, share experiences, offer encouragement and provide practical support can make a real difference to family life. Support is built around the belief that families don't need to face difficult times alone. An important part of the service offered is down to their volunteers and Home Start is looking for local people who would like to become Family Support Volunteers. You don't need to be a parenting expert or have professional qualifications. What matters is having time, patience, a willingness to listen and an understanding that every family is different. Our volunteers offer regular support to families in their own homes and communities, helping parents to build confidence, reduce isolation and recognise their own strengths.

Could you make a difference to a local family? Home Start are keen to hear from people in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire who would like to use their time and life experience to support local families 2 to 3 hours per week. Whether you have parenting experience, have supported others in your community, or simply feel you have something to offer, please get in touch. Anthea Murfin CEO says, “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured funding, it will make a real difference to families across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. We can continue to grow our support, reach more families who need us and, importantly, give local people the opportunity to become family support volunteers. If you would like to find out more about becoming a Home-Start High Peak Family Support Volunteer, please get in touch. M: 07971 957 668 www.homestarthighpeak.org.uk
