Editors letter Hello and welcome to the Autumn edition of S41 Magazine. I’m just going to come straight out with it: this has been a pretty special summer. The main reason? I played tennis at Wimbledon.
Yes, Wimbledon. I’m still not quite sure I’ve got my head around it. So… how did this come about, I hear you asking?

Well, Toby Perkins is a massive tennis fan and player, and a big supporter of British sport. He regularly comes to watch the Chesterfield men’s tennis team, we’re in Divisions 1 and 2, you know! Which is where I play.

Through his love of tennis and his involvement in promoting sport, Toby was invited to play in a friendly match at Wimbledon and needed a doubles partner. I told him I’d think about it and get back to him. Obviously, I said yes.
What followed was one of those days that you know you’ll remember forever. We walked out onto Centre Court, where so many of the greats of the game have played, got changed in the locker room reserved for the seeded players, had dinner at the club and, somehow, managed to come away with a win. Sadly, there was no prize money. You can’t have everything, right? I did manage to sneak a tiny bit of grass home to frame alongside a photo, though. When no one was looking, obviously!
A massive thank you to Toby for making my Wimbledon dream come true. I’m sure my mum was looking down with a massive smile on her face. I made it to Wimbledon after all, Mum.
And then, once I’d come back down to earth, we had another magazine to make! I hope you enjoy it.

Flax: A Wonder Product Amanda Haran & Her Love Of Flax Words: Paul Chapman Images: Amanda Haran
A tiny seed you can plant in your garden, can become a bucket, a rope, a bag, a hosepipe, a tarp or even parachute webbing!
Flax is a remarkable plant, but I suspect many of us have never given it a second thought. Yet flax has played an important part in our industrial heritage and, thanks to local artist Amanda Haran, it is now at the heart of a fascinating project bringing people together through art, history and a handful of seeds. And yes, that is a collapsible flax bucket on our cover. Used during the Second World War, it's a brilliant example of just how versatile flax is, for instance Linen is made from flax, a lightweight natural fabric produced from the fibres of the plant's stalk.
Amanda's flax project really began during a visit to a the former Waingroves colliery site where she became fascinated by the old rope-work that had once been made by hand on site. She started growing flax in her own front garden three years ago, with an idea that has grown into something much bigger. Her project isn't simply about growing a plant. Amanda wants to tell the story of flax and its importance to Derbyshire's industrial heritage, while using it to connect people from different cultures, backgrounds and communities. Page 6

Textiles. A third of the course was arts based and my family contains the Horrockses weaving family so I have strong connection to the mills of Lancashire. It feels fitting that I'm telling the story of flax,” Amanda tells me.
Her career has also included working for the Turner Prize as a community engagement officer, helping people connect with art and encouraging communities to get involved. “My job was about getting people into the gallery, helping them connect with the artworks and creating a legacy that lives on after an exhibition or event.” And then there was Neil: Miner, Neil swept Amanda off her feet and brought her to Derbyshire.
Today, Amanda's studio is her front garden. Here she grows flax from seed, harvests it and begins the process of turning the plant into something that can be woven and made into useful objects. This little plant has found a very special place in Amanda's heart.
“I want to unite people through positive stories, share seeds and encourage others to do the same,” she says. Amanda carefully packages her flax seeds in recycled boxes, ready for them to be passed on and planted. Flax is sown in spring, from late March to April/ early May, and I can guarantee that I will be out planting my box of seeds.

The seeds have already travelled as far as Europe, the network is spreading.
“Many people never set foot in a gallery and experience the works of art we have available to appreciate,” she explains. “But by sharing and growing some seeds, they can become part of a much larger arts installation.” Flax once contributed so much to the economy and landscape around us and the different varieties of flax have different properties and uses, and every part of the plant can be put to good use.

Business Intro A little bit of sunshine: Amanda has been talking to local councillors about the project and is exploring ways they can get involved. Local shops have also got behind the idea and helped distribute boxes of seeds. “I see the project as a small ray of sunshine at a time when messages all around us are so negative,” Amanda says. Amanda's cunning plan: Next year Amanda aims to get as many people as possible to harvest the flax they've grown at home and make a little flax basket. The baskets will be brought together and displayed as one large installation, each basket carrying the story of the person who created it.
Is it difficult to grow? Simply plant the seeds after the first frost and, it's pretty difficult to get it wrong. It doesn’t need much pampering and generally needs little watering once established.

I love what Amanda is doing, she's bringing an interesting part of our industrial heritage back into the conversation, is getting people involved… and you don't have to be an artist, a historian or live on a farm!
Since meeting Amanda, I don't think I'll ever look at a collapsible plastic bucket in a camping shop quite the same way again. There's something rather appealing about the idea of a product grown locally from the ground, doing the job it was designed to do and, when its useful life is over, returning naturally to the earth. Compare that with a plastic alternative that may have travelled halfway around the world before reaching our shelves and could remain in the environment for many years after we've finished with it.

A few minutes on social media and you'd think Chesterfield town centre is dead. However, take a walk around town on a Thursday when the flea market is on and it's a totally different story. Personally I think it's got a lot going for it and there's so much to be positive about. Like any town we have our problems but on reflection we're doing OK. Town has changed and the way many of us shop has changed. Convenience and price often dictating where we spend our money over quality, service and experience. I've cultivated a number of great relationships with local, independent businesses, many of them I consider friends more than clients and they work tirelessly day in day out to make their goods and services available to us all. A few years ago a group, led by Defeye Creative, came together to produce a map and website to help visitors find the independent businesses hidden around town. It was a guide, curated with hand picked places that we love. "There is so much more to Chesterfield than the Crooked Spire. Don’t get us wrong, we love it, but within the town there is a vibrant community of independent businesses and hidden gems waiting to be discovered." Recently we've revisited the town centre map and brought it up to date. There are well over a hundred businesses listed, you can take a look by scanning the QR code opposite to get to the Independent Chesterfield website, where you can download a handy copy of the map. Food As Medicine Introducing Westbrook Nutrition Words: Simon Paterson
Westbrook Nutrition is a new business to S41 Local. I'm excited because not only is it the first nutritional therapy business we've had in S41 Local, but it's also run by Paul's (S40 Local founder's) wife. Nicola Chapman is the driving force behind this business and we met up so I could find out more. So, Nic what prompted you to start your nutritional therapy business? "I had a number of digestive health issues in my 20s which really took their toll and I became interested in how foods, nutrients and lifestyle could make a difference to how I felt. "I knew these were contributing factors and realised that what I ate, how I slept, stress, exercise and lifestyle all impacted how I felt."
When did you decide to take that interest further? "About nine years ago, I decided I wanted to gain more knowledge, and be in a position to help others, so I decided to go back to university to study for a Postgraduate qualification in Nutritional Therapy.
"I studied part-time, alongside my day job, taking six years to complete my course and in 2024 I qualified and registered with the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT).
"Since I qualified I’ve supported a number of clients to improve their health, with face to face and online appointments. It's amazing to see how changes can make a genuine impact."
Is there such a thing as a typical client? "Not really! I work with people with a really wide range of health concerns. Page 20
"I’ve supported people with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and people taking medication for reflux and heartburn. I've worked with people experiencing digestive problems, IBS, menstrual problems, low energy, gallstones, gallbladder issues, including support after gallbladder removal, diverticulitis, constipation and people who have weight-loss goals. The list goes on! "Although the reasons for seeking support vary, they generally have one thing in common: they’re ready to try something different.
"They know they want to make changes to their diet and lifestyle, but often don’t know where to start. There’s so much advice out there and it can be really confusing. I help people to find a way through the marketing, the health claims and the conflicting advice, getting back to basics, supporting them in their health goals.
"People want to know what they should actually be eating, they want a plan, practical support and someone to help them stay accountable. "That’s what I’m trained to do."
What happens at the first appointment? "Before the session you complete a comprehensive health questionnaire which includes a full medical history, signs and symptoms, medications and supplements. I review everything, look at identifying underlying causes and how we can address these with food, lifestyle and maybe supplement or testing recommendations. "At the session we talk through what's happening, the options available and explore where you are and agree actions that feel manageable and appealing.

Community What's On
One World Week Chesterfield Saturday 17 to Saturday 24 October 2026 Text: Paul King
One World Week (OWW) was a big event around 40 years ago led by the World Development Movement (WDM). But the WDM faded, and so did the week. This year a group of people in Chesterfield are resurrecting the idea here, in the hope the idea might spread again.
News bulletins are forever reminding us that we do indeed live in a single world. The recent solar eclipse did this too. This year’s drought and high temperatures underline that ‘something is happening’ – confirmed by the ‘every household’ emergency message on our phones. No air-raid. No invasion, but a real crisis that requires action.
One World Week Chesterfield (OWWCH) will run from Saturday 17 to Saturday 24 October. A fortnight before the week, on Thursday 1 October 2026, there will be a second showing of the People's Emergency Briefing, the Climate Emergency film, fronted by Chris Packham, at Loundsley Green. In November 2025, the National Emergency Briefing brought together leading experts to present the latest evidence on the climate and nature crisis to politicians and other influential people in Westminster. That evidence is now on the public record and was first shown in the Library Theatre in June and brought to Chesterfield again by our local MP.
The core event of OWW will be, United Nations Day on Friday 23 October 2026, with a gathering at The Friend's Meeting House at 6:30pm for up to 80 people. People with various unity concerns and enthusiasms. The following morning, Saturday 24 October, an Informal Rally will take place in the New Market Square, where we invite you to carry a label, sticker Page 24
or banner telling others of your particular experiences and enthusiasms, relating to our one world - maybe you have family elsewhere, belong to international campaigns, or simply care for our world as a whole.
The Street Name Quiz: You might also want to consider our local area and its wider world links by trying the Street Name Quiz - bring your answers along on Saturday 24 October to the rally in New Square to discover the answers and a few prizes no doubt. Our town is headed this year by mayor, Cllr Shirley Niblock, with a son in Canada and experience of our twin towns across the world. Our deputy mayor, Cllr Nick Redihough (who next year will be our last mayor) has international family links. Our Regional Mayor is invited, together with our town's leaders and lots of people like you and me!
The idea is to affirm and celebrate our local togetherness, community and explore our part in national and international matters. Like it or not, we are part and parcel of One World, we're in this together so let us make the best of it. I have played a part in this venture and the Central Methodist Church on Saltergate will kick the week off on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October with a local Songs of Praise Service on Saturday at 2:30pm where guests will choose hymns and Songs. On Sunday 18 October at 10:30am an Open Door Worship - with guests with international experience and connections. I do hope you can come and enjoy.

If you thought The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was ridiculous, wait until you read Dungeon Crawler Carl.
There is nothing remotely special about Carl. He’s an ordinary bloke, living a completely uneventful life, and that’s exactly how he likes it. Until, one evening, Earth gets pummelled by aliens and Carl finds himself trapped in a gigantic, televised dungeon, where what’s left of humanity is being picked off for the entertainment of the galaxy.
And Carl? He’s wearing nothing but his underwear, his ex-girlfriend’s leather jacket and a pair of Crocs. Oh, and he’s accompanied by his ex-girlfriend’s spoiled, murderous cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk. Following an incriminating Instagram photo of his girlfriend, Beatrice, sitting on her exboyfriend’s lap during a New Year’s trip to the Bahamas, Carl makes the call to end it. The problem is, Beatrice has left her cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk, in his care. And this is no ordinary cat. Princess Donut is an extremely expensive show cat who, in an attempt to escape, promptly jumps out of the second-floor window.
As it turns out, this escape attempt saves Carl’s life. He quickly grabs his ex-girlfriend’s Crocs and leather jacket and gives chase, just as every building on Earth is vapourised. The only people left alive are those who happened to be outside at the time. Carl catches Princess Donut just as the buildings disappear and a portal opens, announcing that the dungeon is open and the surviving humans are now contestants Page 26
in the Crawl, with their struggles being broadcast across the galaxy as intergalactic entertainment. What ensues is a completely wild ride.
Dungeon Crawler Carl is one of those books that sounds utterly ridiculous when you try to explain it to someone. It’s part science fiction, part fantasy, part video game and part very dark comedy. Somehow, it manages to combine all of those things without ever becoming a complete mess. Carl is a brilliant protagonist. He’s not a superhero, a chosen one or some ridiculously overpowered warrior. He’s just a bloke in his pants, Crocs and a leather jacket, trying desperately to stay alive. And then there’s Donut, who may well be the greatest character I’ve encountered in a book this year. She’s vain, demanding, completely ruthless and, crucially, a cat. There’s plenty of violence, death and genuinely grim moments, but they’re balanced by an absurd amount of humour. The result is a book that is surprisingly easy to get through. I kept telling myself I’d read one more chapter, only to discover I’d somehow read another 100 pages. I went into Dungeon Crawler Carl expecting something silly and entertaining. I got that, but I also got a genuinely brilliant story, characters I cared about and a world that I desperately wanted to explore further.
And that might be the biggest problem with the book. There are seven books in the series.
I’ve already finished the second one and, as I write this, I’m about to embark on the third. An easy

Barrow Hill Memorial Hall Words & Images: Press Release
Barrow Hill Memorial Hall has officially reopened following a major refurbishment, creating a modern community hub for local residents.
The refreshed hall includes a community pantry, bar and café, family hub, physical activity space and health hub, giving residents access to a range of services and opportunities to socialise. The hall was officially reopened on Saturday 22 August at a community event attended by local residents.
Originally built as a workmen’s hall in 1863, the refurbishment has been led by Barrow Hill Community Trust with funding from the Staveley Town Deal and East Midlands Combined County Authority, among others. Charles Paxton Markham donated the building to the community as a war memorial in the 1920s, and a trust has managed it ever since. Simon Redding, chairperson of Barrow Hill Community Trust CIO, said: “It is wonderful to see the first phase of the Memorial Hall refurbishment finished, with local people enjoying the facilities and benefiting from the new services on offer. As a community-led charity, we will continue to develop these services hand in hand with local people - who are at the heart of all that we do.”
Staveley Town Deal funding has helped create the health hub and social space, alongside essential upgrades to the roof, heating and electrical systems which will support future development.
Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and vice chair of the Staveley Town Deal, said: “The Trust have created a fantastic hub that will make a real difference in the community. This refurbishment will give the building a new lease of life and provide an inviting space where everyone in the community can access a wide range of services. Our aim through the Staveley Town Deal has been to create a place where people can start, stay and grow - this project embodies that by ensuring members of the community can thrive at every stage of their life.” Page 28
East Midlands Combined County Authority funding has supported the creation of the family hub and physical activity space, as well as providing match funding for further bids to refurbish the first floor. Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “Barrow Hill Memorial Hall is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when communities have the investment they need to shape their own future. This refurbishment has breathed new life into an important local building, creating a welcoming space where people can meet, stay active, access support, and build connections. “I’m delighted that money from my investment fund has helped create the new family hub and physical activity space, while supporting the Trust to unlock further investment. I’m committed to backing projects that strengthen our communities and help make the East Midlands a place where people are proud to live, work, and raise a family.” Further phases of the project are planned, with the first floor set to be transformed into a reading room and community venue.

Former Mayor and Mayoress raise more than £10,000 for local charities
Chesterfield’s former Mayor and Mayoress have presented more than £10,000 to their chosen charities following a year of fundraising. Councillor Barry Dyke and Marie Dyke presented a cheque for £10,347 to Poolsbrook Social Welfare Centre and Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity, raised during their term in office in 2025/26.
Councillor Barry Dyke said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to present this cheque to two fantastic local charities that make a big difference in our community. This was only possible because of the generous donations by local people, thank you to everyone who has supported the Mayor’s Appeal.” The annual Mayor’s Appeal raises money for charities chosen by the Mayor, with funds generated through community events including a charity abseil at the Town Hall.
Poolsbrook Social Welfare Centre supports a wide range of social events for all ages, including youth groups, sporting activities and entertainment.
Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity supports patients, visitors and staff, funding projects and facilities beyond what basic NHS funding can provide. Money raised through the appeal will help enhance facilities, including those within the stroke unit.

September Jobs Fair Rotary International are making up Friendship Boxes to send to the children in Ukraine. These boxes are collected locally in Chesterfield by our local Rotary clubs and container lorries (driven by Rotarians) deliver these boxes on to Rotarians in Ukraine. On arrival they are distributed to Rotarians in Ukraine who organise distribution to those needing them the most. Convoys continue to go out every month as this is an on-going situation.
The boxes need to contain exercise/ note books, pens, pencils, rubbers, string, sellotape, coloured pencils, crayons, a small toy etc. The boxes are 25 litres in size, so any toys included will have to be small and once the stationery items are used up, the family can keep the box for their own possessions. The toys should not have batteries or sharp edges for safety reasons.
Dunelm, The Range and Poundland have suitable boxes at about £4 each but we can provide these to you if needed. Toys etc do not need to be new but need to be in good condition to ensure they are well received

Bright Winter Nights will return to Bolsover Castle this November, transforming the town’s iconic landmark with spectacular light installations, projections, soundscapes and interactive artworks across two magical evenings. Launched in 2023 by Junction Arts, Bright Winter Nights has quickly become a muchloved highlight of the winter calendar. Each year, the event brings a brand-new collection of artworks to the castle, creating an immersive experience that celebrates local creativity while bringing the community together. For 2026, the theme is “Speak My Voice”, with every artwork co-created alongside community groups from Bolsover. Working with professional artists, local people are helping to shape the installations and tell their own stories, ensuring their perspectives and voices take centre stage. All of this year’s installations will be newly created for Bright Winter Nights 2026. The programme will also feature 50 Stories, a special project celebrating Junction Arts’ 50th birthday. The piece will bring together stories from people who have shaped, and been shaped by, the charity over the past five decades. Following overwhelming demand for previous events, Junction Arts will once again run Bright Winter Nights across two evenings, giving
more people the opportunity to experience the spectacular show. Tickets will remain affordable, costing £3 for adults, £2 for children and free for under-twos. The event takes place on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, with a dedicated quiet session from 4.30pm to 5pm. Bright Winter Nights 2026 is presented by Junction Arts in partnership with English Heritage and Videoclub, with funding from Arts Council England, Bolsover District Council and Wesco Anixter. The event forms part of the Bolsover Winter Festival, taking place from Thu 26 to Sat 28 November, alongside the much-loved Bolsover Christmas Market and Bolsover Lantern Parade – three festive days celebrating creativity, light and community. It started as a three-piece supporting at 10cc concerts and quickly evolved into a stand-alone entity. These days Heart Full of Songs is a semi-acoustic/electric, four-piece.
Featuring material from across Graham’s catalogue, the set includes such classics as 10cc’s I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday; Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window, which were hits for The Hollies; For Your Love and Heart Full of Soul (the Yardbirds); No Milk Today (Herman’s Hermits); Bridge To Your Heart from his time with the late Andrew Gold as Wax, along with songs from film soundtracks and his solo albums.
