Editors letter Welcome back to another edition of S41 Local, I’m your writer, Klara de Rooij - that’s right I’ve stolen Simon’s job. I’m fibbing, I only took the cover picture. I’ve moved house twice in the past 4 years, and the decision that my parents give me each time is which room I want, and I always pick the room where the sun rises because it helps me get up at silly o’clock for school. This time around I chose the room that has the best view of the sunrise during Autumn… in the summer it isn’t the best. So, I made the executive decision each morning to get an adrenaline rush and watch the sun rise. Every morning for a week and a half I would run down the street, arms flailing like I forgot I used to sprint, and I would just watch the sun and the clouds. The cover is one of the pictures I got at 05:41 - it definitely makes the early mornings a lot better. Right, I’m off for lunch, I’ll hand you back to Simon. A huge thank you to Klara for choosing to spend her work experience with us at S41 and S40 Magazines. The stunning sunrise on this month's front cover was taken just a short walk from her home. She told me she loves setting her alarm early to catch the sunrise, and I'm so glad she did. Her photograph is a lovely reminder that there are moments of real beauty all around us, if we're willing to get up a little earlier to find them. As we head into the August the sun is still shining, which means you can make excellent use of our What’s on section. Here are some of my top picks: Chesterfield Canal Cruise Chesterfield Observatory Open Night Sunset Sanctuary Yoga at Hardwick Hall Barlow Carnival Open Air Cinema The Peak District Highland Games Tapton Lock Festival Whatever it is you are doing this summer, I hope you the best time and make some wonderful memories. Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah, Evangeline and Florie

H&H@Koo: In Safe Hands Words: Paul Chapman Images: H&H@Koo

"...we've been super busy since we opened the doors. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come." John - H&H@Koo

Page 6

www.s41local.com

When a well-loved local business changes hands, there's always a little uncertainty. Will it keep its character? Will the menu change much? Thankfully, in the case of H&H@Koo on Chatsworth Road, the signs are very promising. In July, John Makin became the new owner of one of Chesterfield's favourite coffee shops and cafés, Koo. John is a board member at The Sitwell Arms, has been in hospitality for years, and also runs Brampton Laundry with Cheryl who is a familiar face to many locally. Cheryl previously managed The Real Ale Corner and Barlow Tap House, and has stepped up to run H&H@Koo so we can expect great things.

refreshed with new colours and signage, and inside there was a steady stream of customers despite a rather grey Monday. "We weren't quite sure what to expect," says John, "but we've been super busy since we opened the doors. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come." The menu has something for everyone, with breakfast served until 2pm, alongside paninis, jacket potatoes, signature salads, freshly baked pastries and an ever-changing selection of artisan cakes that's well worth leaving room for. Naturally, there's plenty of great coffee and other drinks to enjoy alongside your meal, scan the QR code for the new menu.

Let's clear up the mystery behind the name. The 'H&H' stands for Honey and Heidi, John's much-loved dogs. In fact, H&H@Koo is proudly dog-friendly, so your four-legged companions are more than welcome too… there are even artisan dog treats from Marge & Mable on hand for the particularly well-behaved visitors.

There's more to come too, Friday and Saturday evenings will see H&H @Koo opening for special events, including bottomless brunches, small plates and live music. If you're looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion, the venue will also be available for private evening hire.

John's career has included time with Patisserie Valerie and Thorntons, so looking after customers comes naturally. The take over happened rather quickly, "Cheryl went away on holiday," laughs John, "and when she came back there was already a handover plan for Catrina in place at the laundry and before she knew it, she was back in hospitality!"

Opening hours have been updated slightly, with the café now welcoming customers from 8am until 3pm. Don't forget to pick up a loyalty card while you're there!

For Cheryl, it couldn't have been a better fit. "I've managed The Tap House and The Real Ale Corner in previous business ventures, so walking through the doors of H&H@Koo felt a bit like coming home," she says. "We're all so excited to be taking on such a well-known business on Chatsworth Road." John is equally enthusiastic about the future. "We're here to build the reputation of H&H@ Koo," he explains. "We're in this for the long run. It's an investment in our future, but more importantly, we're here to stay." That commitment shows in the menu too. They've introduced an entirely new selection featuring artisan breads, pastries and cakes, locally roasted coffee from Ardens Coffee, free-range eggs from Adam's Happy Hens and a growing list of independent local suppliers. "We're keen to build relationships with small local businesses and are always looking for new products that fit our offer," says John.

I didn't spend long with John and Cheryl, but one thing became obvious very quickly, they're genuinely enjoying this new adventure. Of course, there were a few day-one gremlins to iron out, but there was plenty of laughter behind the counter and an obvious passion for what they're doing. Their focus is simple: get to know their customers, serve fantastic artisan food and create somewhere people want to return to time and again. Judging by the number of clean plates heading back into the kitchen on day one, they're already off to a great start. With exciting events already being planned and plenty more ideas waiting in the wings, H&H @ Koo looks to have a bright future ahead. If you haven't visited for a while, now's the perfect time to pop in, say hello to the team, and don't forget to tell them you saw them in S40 Local.

I popped in just over a day after they'd collected the keys. Already the outside had been Please Mention S41 Local

OTI Interiors

Showroom Now Open on Knifesmithgate Text: Paul Chapman Images: OTI Interiors

"We create a solution that works for you and your family. Designs built around your lifestyle and how you use the space." Gavin, OTI Interiors

OTI Interiors is a bespoke cabinetry company founded in 2022, specialising in beautifully crafted kitchens, furniture and interior spaces. The business recently opened its showroom on Knifesmithgate, offering clients the opportunity to experience its design-led approach and craftsmanship first-hand. Founded by Gavin and Hannah Grainger, OTI Interiors grew from a passion for exceptional design and a desire to create truly bespoke interiors. "Whilst renovating our own hospitality venues, we were constantly asked who had designed the interiors," explains Gavin. "Those conversations made us realise there was a real appetite for thoughtfully designed, handcrafted cabinetry. Creating spaces that not only look beautiful but function perfectly has always been something I'm passionate about." Having known Gavin since his days working in bars on Chatsworth Road, I've always admired his determination and eye for detail. What many people don't realise is that he was responsible for designing the interiors of Bottle & Thyme, transforming the former bank building on Knifesmithgate, as well as leading the design of Elder. Those projects showcased not only his design ability but also his understanding of how thoughtfully designed spaces can completely transform the way people experience them.

and a talented team to deliver high-quality, bespoke cabinetry throughout the region. Today, OTI Interiors brings together specialists across every stage of a project. Designer Emelie works closely with clients with create e-signs tailored to both their homes and lifestyles, Shaun leads the specialist spray finishing, ensuring every piece receives a flawless hand-finished appearance and Connor oversees project delivery, coordinating installations from start to finish. Supported by a trusted network of skilled tradespeople, the team delivers projects with the same attention to detail from initial concept through to final installation. Throughout every project, Gavin remains closely involved, ensuring each design reflects the company's commitment to craftsmanship, quality and exceptional customer experience. That dedication to detail has helped OTI Interiors quickly establish a reputation for creating bespoke interiors that combine timeless design with meticulous workmanship. If you fancy a new kitchen, cabinetry solution or need your interior space improving, give OTI Interiors a call.

What has been particularly impressive is the pace at which OTI Interiors has established itself. Operating from its dedicated workshop and spray facility in Hasland, the company has invested in professional equipment, processes Please Mention S41 Local

Rewilding the Land, Restoring the Soul Words: Paul Chapman Images: Helen Rowan Photography / Wild & Other

Looking for a place for friends and family to stay when they visit? The lovely holiday cottages from Wild & Other are the perfect place for this but this project is so much more than that. Set at Cow Close Farm in Cutthorpe, it's a family-run project combining hospitality with an ambitious vision for rewilding. I caught up with Hannah and Matt to learn more about the venture and why slowing down matters more than ever. Tell us about Wild & Other, what is it all about? "Wild & Other is a family-run rewilding project that brings together beautiful places to stay with a genuine commitment to nature. We wanted to create somewhere that allows wildlife to thrive while giving people the opportunity to reconnect with the countryside. "Our holiday cottages are part of that vision, but they're only one piece of the story. Alongside restoring historic farm buildings, we're working to restore the surrounding landscape through habitat creation, biodiversity projects and long-term rewilding. Everything we do is driven by the belief that the places we care for today should be richer and healthier for future generations." Where did the idea first come from? "Our founders, Steve (far left) and Emily (right), had spent years enjoying nature and became increasingly concerned about the effects of climate change. They wanted to create something that would actively protect and celebrate the natural environment while helping others experience its restorative qualities. "At the same time, Matt (centre pic) and his wife Michelle were exploring the wellbeing benefits of spending time outdoors. Michelle had recently qualified as a therapist, and together they wanted to create somewhere where nature itself could become part of people's healing and relaxation." The remarkable thing was that Steve and Matt had been considering almost identical ideas. Once they started talking, they realised that by combining their skills and experience they could create something far more ambitious. Wild & Other was born. "We became the custodians of Cow Close Farm in April 2023, and it immediately felt like the perfect place to bring our vision to life. The previous owners had cared for the farm

beautifully and were pleased to know that we'd continue preserving both the historic buildings and the landscape around them. "Our renovations respect the character of the original farm while creating peaceful, welcoming spaces where guests could truly relax. Oak Cottage and Hickory Cottage welcomed their first visitors in November 2023, with the Farmhouse in October 2024." So what is rewilding? "It's about giving nature the opportunity to recover," says Matt. "In November 2024 we created new ponds as part of a wider habitat enhancement programme, alongside tree planting, land management and ongoing conservation work. "Rewilding isn't something you achieve overnight though," Matt laughs. "It takes patience and a willingness to think in decades rather than months. "One of the most rewarding aspects has been seeing wildlife gradually return. We've recorded new bird species, watched wildflowers appear where they hadn't grown before and captured increasing amounts of activity on our wildlife cameras. Every small change tells us we're moving in the right direction." Does this include the new Steers you've bought back onto the land? "Large grazing animals play an incredibly important role in shaping healthy

landscapes. Their grazing patterns create a rich mix of grasses, wildflowers and habitats that support insects, birds and countless other species. "They're also part of our approach to ethical food production. We believe it's possible to produce meat on a smaller, more considered scale that respects both the animals and the land they graze." What do you hope visitors take away after a stay at Cow Close Farm? "More than anything, we hope people slow down. Modern life is incredibly busy, and nature has an amazing ability to help us pause, breathe and reconnect with what's really important." Finally, what does the future hold for Wild & Other? "We're still only at the beginning of our journey but we'll continue restoring habitats, encouraging biodiversity and developing places where people can experience the countryside in a more meaningful way. "For us, Wild & Other has always been about thoughtful hospitality, a love of nature and the simple belief that slowing down helps us reconnect with what matters most." Check out Wild & Other at the website below and a huge thanks to the team for introducing us to their new space. www.wildandother.com

Klara's favourite book 'Bridge of Clay' by Markus Zusak

Summer Reading A summer challenge Words: Klara de Rooij

During the Great Pandemic of 2020, I found the one hobby that would define me – reading. If I remember correctly, it was during Lent of 2020 that really sparked my hyper-interest. As a Lenten challenge we decide to give up our phones? 40 days without my phone and I ended up reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in under a week and after that I swept through the series like a madwoman. I’m sure that over the pandemic I read over 10 million words because it’s all I did with my time. Read. Physical books, but more importantly online books. A whole new world opened to me because going to the library was rather difficult. Page 18

My mum introduced me to ‘Anne of Green Gables’, a series she loves, one my sister loves, and one that I have fallen in love with so much that I’m starting from the beginning and annotating my copies for my best friend. My mum bought me the entire series, but I’m only halfway through 6 years later. And this is the dilemma that has hit me as I’ve grown up. As a 6th Former, life is very busy. As a sister, life has been even busier. Reading books has taken the backseat for a while. As I read more online, the physical stack of books looking at me sadly, begging to be read are being ignored. I kept telling myself that I would pick up reading

www.s41local.com

again during the holiday – a little secret for you, I didn’t. I’m not looking down on people who read online, it helped me fall back in love with reading, but you can’t beat the feeling of having a physical book in your hands, and it allows you to disconnect from the pressures of life – it’s just you and your book. I have had the privilege of my mum being an avid reader – I have over 100 books at my disposal every day because she was willing to feed into my obsession. But what if you’re just getting into reading, or you’re coming back after a long time and don’t have the finance to spend money on buying countless books? The answer is rather simple. Every single town has one of these. The exterior of this building varies from town to town, but the interior stays the same – if you haven’t put it together yet, it’s my current favourite place in school, the library! The Chesterfield library has a grand total of… (one Google search later) an unrevealed amount, but trust me it’s a lot, I sat in the library two days a week for two hours during my Y10 summer and there’s endless amounts of shelves and genres. Fun Fact: this year is the year of reading! And let me relate the message that libraries all over Britain are sharing: “Whatever you’re into, you’ll find your library is the perfect place to Go All In.” If you’re into fantasy, medieval history, theatre, music, robots, horror – whatever it is that you’re interested in, head down to the library to look for something. Or if you don’t know what you want to read ask. At the end of Y7, my English teacher took us to the library for the last 20 minutes of Y7. I struggled to find a book to read, so I asked her what she recommended, and she gave me ‘The Golden Compass’ by Phillip Pullman. Lyra was a character I fell in love with instantly; I asked my mum to buy me the trilogy straight after I finished the first book because I couldn’t get enough. Recommendations are how I have most of the books on my shelf. Talking to other people about books not only allow you to connect to people within the book community, but you can

'The Chesterfield library has a grand total of… (one Google search later) an unrevealed amount, but trust me it’s a lot,'

have discussions around books – those are some of the most interesting conversations you will ever have. If you’re a parent the most important thing you can do during this age is take them to the library. The library does a summer reading challenge for kids – they’re brilliant! They win prizes and gain a certificate at the end of the summer if they complete the challenge, and it’s an excellent idea to get kids into reading. I mentioned that I have over 100 books on my shelf, over the summer that’s going to decrease spectacularly because something that I talked about whilst here was the importance of your personal collection. Your personal collection are the books that you are going to pass down to the next generations – they represent you. That doesn’t mean you have to only have the most pretentious books on your shelf, what it means is that it should be made up of books you love. There’s books on my shelf that I got as a child that I’ve never touched. I’m going to stop hoarding them and give them to the library so that another child can pick up the book and fall in love with reading. If you have any books, you don’t want anymore, don’t bin them – donate them, give them to a neighbour, or give them to a library. Reading is necessary for society to grow because it allows us to be empathetic towards people we’ve never met, it allows us to connect to people, it increases our vocabulary and it allows us to think critically about everything. Become an avid reader today.

BMX Track £150,000 transformation Words & images: Simon Paterson & Chesterfield BMX Club Images: Amy Quick

After months of hard work, fundraising and dedication from volunteers, Ringwood BMX Track has officially reopened following a £150,000 refurbishment, giving riders of all ages a first class facility to enjoy for years to come. The track, which has been part of Ringwood Park for around 40 years, has been transformed with a brand new riding surface, start gate and signage, ensuring the berms, rollers and tabletops are better than ever. The result is a modern, high quality track that will support the next generation of BMX riders in Chesterfield. The ambitious project was led by volunteers from Chesterfield BMX Racing Club, whose commitment to improving the venue has created a lasting legacy for the local cycling community. The reopening was celebrated with a community open day, attracting families, riders and supporters to experience the revitalised track. Visitors enjoyed the opportunity to meet club members, watch demonstrations and discover more about the exciting world of BMX racing. Head coach Libby Hawkins said: "I'm so incredibly proud of our team. This improved track is game changing for our community. I can't wait to start running sessions here again and see the confidence, friendships and life skills it helps young people develop." The club has also taken the opportunity to recognise the organisations and businesses whose support made the project possible. A special thank you was given to Dirtworks BMX and Bike-track.com, whose team returned to rebuild and modernise the very track they originally constructed four decades ago. Chesterfield Borough Council also played a key role throughout the project, alongside funding Page 22

partners Access Sport, British Cycling's Club Development Team, the London Marathon Foundation, Galliford Try, Robertson Group, The Derbyshire Environmental Trust Limited and The Landfill Communities Fund. Their combined support has ensured BMX will continue to thrive in Chesterfield for many years to come. Councillor Martin Stone, Chesterfield Borough Council's cabinet member for climate change, planning and the environment, praised the volunteers' efforts. He said: "The club has done amazing work to raise funds and create a fantastic facility for the community. We're proud to support these improvements, which will help more people experience BMX racing." The history of some of Chesterfield’s best town centre pubs is explored in a new book by Shaun Stevenson and Chris Fox. Historical Tales and Traditional Ales is a reworking of their successful first booklet which contains new stories and anecdotes in a handy pocket-sized format retaining the self-guided pub tour theme, but with a new route and three new venues for you to visit. “We were pleasantly surprised by the success of our first edition”, commented local history enthusiast Shaun. “Everyone seemed delighted to learn the secret history of many places that they thought they knew so well”. The book focuses on eight well-known town centre pubs, but also touches on the history of some watering holes that have been lost over the years. Tales of murders and hauntings, famous and infamous local characters, long forgotten pub names and humorous yarns are

The new book was is £3, available from the venues mentioned. "The landlords and landladies have paid for the books to be printed and the small profit that they make from the sale of books will go to them”, said Chris. "We appreciate their support and feel sure that their copies will sell out quickly”. Historical Tales and Traditional Ales has been designed as a self-guided pub tour of Chesterfield, so, it is not only of great interest to local people but is also very useful to visitors.
