Hello and welcome to the June edition of S41 Local Magazine.
It’s warm, the sun has finally arrived and I am sat behind a PC creating a magazine, ha-ha! Good job I love it!
Our annual Chesterfield Postcard Show front cover is back, and with a custard tart no less! Full round up in this months edition.
Big news, huge news… Peddler Market is officially returning this year and just the thought of it is making me hungry. Back in five!

So, what have we been up to?
We recently attended the Young Persons Market, where Florie sold her old toys, books and clothes. It’s a brilliant event that helps young people build confidence and develop important life skills including customer service and money management, something increasingly valuable in today’s digital world.
Love your coffee? Sadly I feel that some will be excited to hear that a planning application from Starbucks to open on Chatsworth Road has been approved by Derbyshire planners. Many others will be devastated and concerned as it will doubtless change the street scene, however it just makes it more important than ever that we continue supporting our brilliant local, independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Vote with your feet readers.
Our local independent businesses are the lifeblood of the community and they deserve our support.
Talking of independents, we have picked the perfect week to escape to Brighton for a few days. I absolutely love Brighton. The Lanes are a shining example of how a high street can thrive when it has an eclectic mix of independent businesses, cafés and shops full of personality.
On that note, I have heard on very good authority that an independent bookshop could be coming to Chesterfield town centre. As a book worm, that is wonderful news indeed.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as I enjoy putting it together.

The 5th Chesterfield Postcard Show

This year marks the 5th year of the locally treasured Chesterfield Postcard Show. Back in 2021, the first theme chosen was ‘Happy’. When everything had just begun to re-open and everyone was feeling dejected, Junction Arts wanted to use open, positive themes through their artwork to change topics of conversation to be more optimistic.
The Postcard Show is a community focused event, developed based on engagement and is open to individual artists, local art groups and more - the majority not being ‘traditional’ artists. Junction Arts aims to bring together local communities and publicise the creative identity that Chesterfield has.
This year’s theme was ‘Things we love’, bringing in a broad range of art including watercolour, illustrations, and photography - the only restriction is that it has to be A6. The postcards featured many different perspectives on what ‘Things we Love’ can mean, including Chesterfield, landscapes, cats, dogs, and family. This year has been more successful than ever, with 363 postcards being donated and 134 being sold. Junction Arts made over £1,800 - a huge jump from £800 raised in 2025. All money raised goes back to the Junction Arts charity.
Hannah Bowdler does all the packaging and exhibiting alongside Dave Elsom of Sombrero Printmaking, a lino printer who volunteers and works with Junction Arts. Tom Newell, a Chesterfield illustrator who took part in Derbyshire Makes, also contributed to the Chesterfield Postcard Show in May and Keith Duncan's fabulous artwork is featured on the cover. Junction Arts collaborated with 40 local artists during the Derbyshire Makes project in April, who also took part in the Postcard Show along with many other local artists.
This year’s show was sponsored by Andy Wilson, a mental health advocate and educator who owns Chesterfield’s Full and Frank Mental Health Presentations.
Next year’s theme will be ‘The Little Things that Matter’, celebrating everyday comfort, connection, and joy. Junction Arts hope to continue with 2026’s success, and would love as many people as possible to get involved.

The Changing Face of Chesterfield

For years, Chesterfield has battled a reputation problem. Mention the town to anyone and the same stereotypes often appear: empty shops, neglected buildings, nothing for young people to do. Yet the reality is far more complicated. Chesterfield today is not a town in decline, but one in transition – balancing its proud history with the opportunities that modern life brings. With a median age close to the national average, Chesterfield stays home to a broad mix of generations. However, many young residents feel the town lacks excitement compared with nearby cities such as Sheffield or Nottingham. Over time, this perception has helped shape the image of Chesterfield as somewhere people eventually leave behind. But is this reputation deserved? While the town centre has undoubtedly changed over the last two decades, Chesterfield is far from the “ghost town” it is sometimes portrayed as. In fact, many residents argue that the town’s strongest qualities are often overlooked simply because they have become so familiar to us.
The Crooked Spire alone brings visitors from across the UK every year. But Chesterfield’s identity extends beyond its famous church. Its location, positioned between major cities and on the edge of the Peak District, gives both residents and tourists access to the countryside while having strong transport links. The criticism aimed at small towns is not unique to Chesterfield. Across the country, changing shopping habits, online retail, and the lasting effects of the pandemic have reshaped high streets. Chain stores that once dominated town centres have gradually disappeared, often leaving behind derelict buildings which create an impression of decline, not to mention being an eyesore.
Local business owners say the community spirit remains one of Chesterfield’s greatest assets. Cheryl Knowles, owner of Eclectic Delights of Serendipity in the town centre, believes that change is inevitable in towns, but it is important to hold onto the strong communities that we have within the town. Corey Lavender of Vanishing Point Records believes that the town has unfairly been given a reputation of being dull or outdated. Since opening his business 9 years ago, he has seen how supportive the local community can be, particularly in the music scene. He sees the community of local businesses as “working together to make Chesterfield better,” emphasising the important part that local businesses play in the regeneration of Chesterfield.
Chesterfield has a surprisingly rich musical history, with major artists from the 60s and 70s performing here at their height. Although many residents associate Sheffield more with live music culture, independent shops and markets continue to attract passionate audiences and help maintain the creative identity that Chesterfield has always had.
Attitudes towards town centres have changed nationally. Increasingly, people are looking for experience rather than simply convenience. Independent cafés, specialist shops, and local services offer something online shopping cannot – personal interaction and a sense of community. This shift may ultimately work in Chesterfield's favour.
Gavin Grainger, owner of Bottle and Thyme, OTI interiors and Elder Wine, believes the future of the town centre depends on a balance between larger chains (drawing people in initially) and independent businesses (creating the distinct personality of the town).

This sense of identity matters deeply to local residents, particularly at a time when many British towns struggle to define themselves after years of social and economic change. Chesterfield’s market heritage remains central to its identity, even as the town evolves. Understandably, residents miss the busy high streets of the ‘old’ Chesterfield, however it is important to recognise that modern town centres must serve different purposes.
Many of the negative views surrounding the town come from a nostalgia for a version of Chesterfield that no longer exists. Like countless towns across Britain, we have had to adapt to economic changes, shifting consumer habits and the long-term impacts of COVID-19. The market-based high street feel may never fully return to how it was, but this is not a sign of failure.
For residents who have seen the town change over several decades, Chesterfield today can feel both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. Some landmarks and traditions remain untouched, while other aspects of the town have completely transformed.
Chesterfield is not a perfect town, and very few residents would claim otherwise. Yet it is also not the hopeless place that people sometimes suggest. Beneath the headlines about empty shops and struggling high streets is a town with a strong sense of identity, resilient local businesses, and communities dedicated to the future of the town. At the end of the day, people continue to stay in Chesterfield for a reason. And even those who leave often find their way back.

Lauren Strachan takes on comedic challenge for Weston Park

For Lauren Strachan of Edwards Employment Solutions, supporting Weston Park Cancer Charity is deeply personal. Her grandfather, Professor Barry Hancock, helped establish the charity, creating what Lauren describes as “something really special” for people affected by cancer across South Yorkshire North Derbyshire.
Now Lauren is continuing that legacy by taking on a series of fundraising challenges to support the charity’s vital work. Her first target is ambitious, raising £2,000 through comedy performances, volunteering, sponsored challenges and community events.
One of the biggest challenges will see Lauren step completely outside of her comfort zone. In November, she will take part in “Funny Business,” a stand-up comedy fundraiser at Sheffield City Hall, where seven participants will each perform a ten-minute comedy set in front of a live audience.
“I’ve never done comedy before in my life,” Lauren admitted. “My friends don’t even laugh at my jokes, so it’s definitely going to be challenging.”
Participants will receive coaching from comedian Colin Manford ahead of the event, with workshops designed to help build confidence and prepare material. Despite nerves, Lauren is embracing the experience and encouraging others to get involved.
Alongside the comedy night, Lauren has also signed up for volunteering projects and charity challenges, including recreating one of her grandfather’s previous fundraising feats by visiting every station on the Northern Rail network.
Her motivation comes not only from family ties, but from seeing first-hand the impact the charity has on local people.
“Cancer affects so many people,” she said. “I wanted this to be my way of giving back to the community and helping keep that legacy going.”
Lauren spoke passionately about the wide range of services provided by Weston Park Cancer Charity, highlighting that the organisation supports not only patients, but entire families. Services include transport to hospital appointments, financial and practical support, counselling, holistic therapies and wellbeing services.
She also praised the charity’s outreach work through its “Big Purple Bus,” which visits workplaces and communities to offer cancer awareness, advice and support.
“A lot of people put off going to the doctors because life gets busy,” Lauren explained. “The bus makes support more accessible, whether it’s for patients, relatives or anyone worried about their health.”

It was only Autumn last year when I last caught up with Kate (below) from Oculi Opticians on Chatsworth Road but as I've been chatting to Lucy, Jo and Lauren it felt only fitting that I check in at Oculi to catch up on the latest gossip.
Almost six years after opening in the middle of the pandemic, Oculi continues to grow thanks to its personal approach to eye care and strong community support.
Owner Kate Wain is proud of the business she has created over the last 6 years. “It’s really flown by, here we are nearly 6 years on still growing and really feeling a part of the community in Chesterfield.”
After years of working for larger National Optical groups and then Independent Opticians, Kate says it was her experience within the
Independent Practices that inspired Oculi’s approach. “Independents can offer a completely different level of service and support,” she explains. “That’s what I always wanted Oculi to be about.”
Central to that philosophy is time and personal care. Kate works alongside the same two optometrists, Kathie and Chris, who joined when the business opened in September 2020. This month marks two years since Soresby Street Café first opened its doors, and what a journey it’s been for owner Jamie and the team. The popular independent café has become a firm favourite with locals, thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, flexible menu and genuinely welcoming approach. Now, the business is becoming even more of a family affair, with Jamie’s partner Becks stepping away from her NHS career to join the café full time. And there’s even more exciting news for the couple, as Becks is also expecting their first child in September. Congratulations to you both from everyone at S40 & S41 Local!
With summer just around the corner, Soresby Street Café is introducing a range of seasonal menu updates. Fresh summer salads are making an appearance alongside a tempting selection of new small plates, perfect for lighter lunches or relaxed catch-ups with friends. There are also new sandwiches, burgers and dirty fries on the menu, while the expanded children’s menu means even the fussiest little eaters should find something they’ll enjoy. That customer-first attitude is clearly at the heart of everything they do. During our visit, the team had just popped next door to a charity shop to buy an extra cushion to make a customer more comfortable, a small gesture that says a lot about the atmosphere they’ve created.

A top class international musical journey

With only a few weeks to go until the 19th Gate To Southwell Festival, ticket sales are already at record levels for one of the UK’s best loved small music festivals. The four-day event returns to rural Nottinghamshire from Thursday July 2 to Sunday July 5, bringing more than 60 folk, roots, acoustic, Americana and world music acts across five stages. Alongside the music, festivalgoers can enjoy family entertainment, workshops, dance sides, market traders and excellent food and drink facilities.
This year’s headline acts need little introduction. Scotland’s much-loved duo The Proclaimers lead the bill alongside legendary Richard Thompson, who will perform with singer-songwriter Zara Phillips. Also appearing are celebrated African vocal group Black Umfolosi, Virginia string band The Hot Seats and rising gothic folk artist Amelia Coburn. The packed line up also includes Stornoway favourites Peat & Diesel, Steve Knightley with The Winter Yards Band, award-winning Scottish dance outfit Elephant Sessions and Honeyfeet featuring the acclaimed vocals of Rioghnach Connolly. Irish folk favourites Ranagri also feature, alongside a major East Coast of Canada showcase bringing artists from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Labrador and Prince Edward Island to Southwell.
Festival organisers have also confirmed the return of acclaimed Canadian live act The Fugitives following memorable performances in 2024, plus celebrated duo Kris Drever and Cahalen Morrison. Drever, a seven-time BBC Folk Award winner, is well known for his work with Lau, Eddie Reader and Mark Knopfler.
Strong female voices are another key part of this year’s programme, with performances from Edwina Hayes, Grainne Hunt, Detta Kenzie and flautist Eliza Marshall. Local talent also remains central to the festival, with Becky Syson, Jessie Reid and Matlock guitarist Sticky Bones Jones all appearing.
Elsewhere, audiences can expect brass folk from Keston Cobblers Club, energetic folk rock from Blackbeard's Tea Party and shanty folk punk from Man The Lifeboats. Returning favourites include The Hunch, Evolution of Fisherman and Reuben & The Bridge, while Bristol’s Barrel House Vipers bring jazz and swing influences to the weekend.
Described by Nottingham’s Left Lion magazine as “a top class international musical journey right on our doorstep”, this year’s festival also introduces several improvements, including a new cover for the Frontier Stage and even a wood-fired sauna.
Gate To Southwell Festival takes place on farmland near Soutwhwell, midway between Newark and Mansfield. Run as a not-for-profit event by a dedicated team of volunteers, any surplus income is reinvested into future festivals.

Entrepreneurs Circle (EC), the UK’s largest community for ambitious business owners, has launched a free 5+ hour online course designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs avoid the common mistakes that cause many start-ups to fail. With around one in five UK businesses failing in their first year, and fewer than half surviving beyond five years, the initiative aims to provide practical, proven guidance for people starting a business in today’s uncertain economy.
The course, How to Start a Business Properly: The Entrepreneurs Circle Start-Up Incubator, is available free of charge and focuses on realworld execution rather than theory or motivation alone. Created by EC founder and CEO Nigel Botterill, who has built 15 seven and eightfigure businesses generating more than £100 million in sales, the programme condenses over 20 years of experience into a step-by-step blueprint for building a sustainable business.
The curriculum covers six areas, including entrepreneurial mindset, avoiding early-stage mistakes, building a profitable business model, attracting customers, delivering excellent customer service, and planning future growth. The course is designed to help entrepreneurs overcome the practical challenges that often prevent start-ups from gaining momentum.
What makes the initiative unique is its combination of online learning with local, inperson support. Entrepreneurs Circle operates a network of more than 70 local ambassadors who host monthly meetings for business owners. What happens during Loneliness Awareness Week? Loneliness Awareness Week is dedicated to raising awareness of loneliness by inspiring conversation and communication.
By talking about it, we can reduce the stigma surrounding this natural human emotion, and by hosting a connection activity we can create a sense of belonging and reduce loneliness in our communities.
The campaign has reached millions across the world through conversations on social media and partnerships. #LonelinessAwarenessWeek has trended and hundreds of organisations, charities and individuals get involved including the Royal Family, the Prime Minister and the NHS!
Who runs the campaign? Marmalade Trust offers support for people of all all ages who are experiencing loneliness. The team launched Loneliness Awareness Week in 2017 and now work with partners across the world to raise awareness and inspire people to create connections.

What's On Words & Music to Listen To: Hūs Party

If you’ve never been to a Hūs Party! Well you haven’t exactly missed dozens, there have only been two! But If you’re someone who genuinely enjoys listening to live performance and not just having it pulse in the background while you shout over a drink, then this is very much your kind of night.
A small, intimate setting with all the charm of a 1970s lounge, a touch of cabaret club, and the cosiness of a loft space. The second Hūs Party offered a line-up that included, poet Kate Burns, vocal collective Doe Lea Voices, and local folk trio Martha Hegarty and the Midnight Sea,
Not a Choir and Proud of It: Next came Doe Lea Voices: five women joined by Rich on guitar, all of whom meet regularly at the Doe Lea Centre. Keen to make one thing clear, they introduced themselves with a smile: ‘We are not a choir.’
Their performance was warm, unpretentious, and refreshingly human. There may have been a few opening nerves, but they quickly settled into the room’s laid-back rhythm. Smiles spread across faces, both on stage and in the audience as their harmonies filled the space.
Their rendition of Sweet Child o’ Mine, elevated by the surprising addition of hand chimes, was playful, memorable, and slightly Christmassy, despite it being April.

Poetry, Paint and Fairy Folk: First up was Kate Burns, her set immediately establishing the thoughtful, intimate tone of the evening. Her opening poem explored her relationship with painting, drawing parallels between canvas and paint, and the natural pairing of soil and water. From there, she shifted into The Sidhe, a piece inspired by Irish folklore and the mysterious Fairy People, before delivering one of her current favourites, Women in the Walls. The standout moment of her set: a meditation on the countless women who came before us, who touched the same stones and walls, leaving traces of themselves behind.
A brief political jab added edge, before People of Chesterfield, a commissioned work for an upcoming heritage trail brought things back home. And yes, Chesterfield’s dream of an ice rink gets a mention.
Folk Sounds and Big Atmosphere: After enthusiastic applause, the headline act took to the stage: Laura Hegarty and the Midnight Sea. This three-piece, Laura on vocals and guitar, Steve on accordion and Shruti Box, and Neil on drums, proved that a small group can create an expansive sound.
Their opening track, Kinder Scout, inspired by the historic trespass, set the mood beautifully. From there, the audience was drawn into an extensive and immersive setlist, each song introduced by atmospheric soundscapes that gently carried listeners into the next piece.
For anyone newly converted to folk music or perhaps after discovering a certain BBC favourite like Detectorists, this was a reminder of just how captivating the genre can be.
Songs like Last Night I Dreamt I Fired My Deathray Again immediately sparked intrigue through title alone, while Redwood, written on a train in Canada, offered a deeply personal moment.
And the Shruti Box - a fascinating floor-mounted instrument operated by foot, producing a rich drone beneath the lead instruments.
The sound sat surprisingly well alongside the electronic textures of the recorded intros, creating a blend that felt both ancient and modern.
The result? A set received with genuine warmth and admiration.
More Than Just a Gig: What makes events like this special is the intention behind them. Open Hūs is a Community Interest Group, fully independent and funded solely through ticket sales and room hire. There’s no corporate backing, no overblown production, just a simple, thoughtfully used space bringing people together to share music, poetry, and ideas.
That spirit was evident throughout the night. From community singers performing for a community audience, to artists given room to create and connect, the whole evening felt rooted and meaningful.
So, after a couple of hours spent in great company and immersed in memorable performances, one phrase kept coming to mind: music to listen to.
This wasn’t about dancing in a packed, sweaty club to a relentless beat. It was about sitting with sound, absorbing the words and appreciating the time, craft, and emotion that artists put into what they create.
That’s what a Hūs Party delivers.
If future events are anything like this one, it’s well worth keeping an eye on Open Hūs for upcoming gigs, and if you’re ever in need of a unique venue for an event or workshop, they may just have the perfect space.

As usual, our entrance fee is £4 per person. Children get in free and all other costs for refreshments stay the same, with plants for sale.
PLEASE NOTE: This will be the only weekend we will open to the public this year, we will not open as we have other years, during August. If you are a private garden group, please message me separately regarding private view dates.

Chesterfield Market will be buzzing with music and award-winning street food this summer as Peddler Market returns to the town for two weekend events.
Now regeneration works have been completed the popular street food market will be returning to New Square for two weekends as above. Expect to find a great selection of street food traders, music, craft drinks and a selection of unique market stalls.
Jordan Roberts, Co-Founder of Peddler Market said: “We’re so happy to be planning events in Chesterfield again, especially in the newly developed square. It was so busy last time and our traders haven’t stopped asking when they can come back. We’ll be bringing some of our top traders with us to create the Peddler vibe that will make you want to hang out all day.”

Six in 26 - a micro anniversary tour - Nik Kershaw and his Band embark on a limited run of shows to mark his 50 years as a responsible adult.
Also known as "the no particular reason we can think of, tour” and “the why the Hell not, tour”. Expect hits and more. In fact, expect whatever you like!”
Born Nicholas David Kershaw on 1st March 1958 in Bristol, he grew up in Ipswich where he discovered his love for music. His father was an architect and flautist in the town’s orchestra and his mother trained as an opera singer. He describes himself as a late developer, first picking up a guitar when he was 15, as a result of watching a TV documentary on David Bowie. He signed with MCA Records in 1983 and, in the September of the same year, "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down" was released for the first time, reaching a respectable No.47 in the UK charts (achieving a rather more respectable No. 2 when re-released the following summer). This was followed in January 1984 by "Wouldn't It Be good" which languished gracefully at No.4 in the UK charts for five weeks and was to break Kershaw worldwide. The seminal “Human Racing” album was released in March and achieved platinum sales in many territories.
