Editors letter

Hello and welcome to the May edition of S41 Local Magazine.

I’m absolutely over the moon with this month’s front cover, and no, that’s not just because it features the Moon.

NASA has released some incredible free images from the Artemis II voyage, and Paul and I couldn’t resist sharing a few with you in both the S41 and S40 editions. To go alongside them, I’ve included a review of the book Artemis, a great read, and Paul has written a fascinating piece on the surprisingly strong links between Derbyshire and space exploration. Who knew we were basically neighbours with NASA?

The warm weather also brings a packed calendar of local events, which I love. From the Children’s Festival and the Postcard Show to the Arts Trail and the 1940s Market, there’s something for everyone. With any luck, by the time this lands on your doormat, the big coat will have been, officially, retired for the season.

I’ll leave you this month with a few snapshots from the Derbyshire Makes event, and hopefully I’ll see you at the next local gathering.

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy putting it together.

Peace, love and positivity Simon, Bekah, Evangeline and Florie

The Moon

Text: Paul Chapman & Simon Paterson Images: Courtesy of NASA

This edition our cover is something a bit different, OK it's not exactly local but we all see it daily and it is kind of local, it's our closest moon!

I know you're all probably bored of hearing about and seeing images from Artemis II but we think it's simply jaw dropping, a massive jug of positivity against the madness that seems to emanate from our world leaders at the moment, stop: we don't do politics.

Round the back of the moon and back, simply amazing so we've dedicated a few pages to celebrate.

What's fab is that many of the images NASA capture are open source so we're free to use them and share them far and wide.

And locally we have quite a few connections to space I bet you didn't know about?

• University of Derby Researchers: A team at the University of Derby is actively involved in space manufacturing research, specifically exploring Transient Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding (TLDB). This technique is designed to weld components together in space, a critical technology for building future large-scale habitats on the Moon.

• Space Manufacturing & Engineering: Derbyshire is home to several high-tech engineering firms that supply the aerospace and space sectors,

such as EPM: Technology in Derby (advanced composites) and Accrofab. Dynamic Aerospace Fabrications Ltd in Castle Donington produces highprecision parts for aerospace applications.

• Future Astronaut Candidate: Ryan MacDonald, who grew up in Derby, was selected as a candidate for the Mars One project, a one-way mission to establish a human colony on Mars.

• Space Education & Outreach: Tim Peake, the first British European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut, has strong links to the county, visiting Derbyshire to inspire careers in science and technology. Additionally, a "Space Sapling" from Sir Isaac Newton’s apple tree, which was taken to the International Space Station by Peake, was planted at the Rosliston Forestry Centre in South Derbyshire.

• Amateur Astronomy and Tracking: The Derby & District Astronomical Society is active in observing and reporting on satellites. Notably, historical figures like Kenneth Stevens from Littleover were pioneers, using their homes to conduct satellite tracking and radio astronomy.

• Space Data/Surveying: Companies like Space Captures Ltd in Heanor utilize 3D laser technology, a field often engaged in high-precision mapping and survey data. Additionally, Derbyshire is closely linked to the Midlands Space Cluster and Space Park Leicester, which connects local research with national space projects.

"Neil Armstrong, walking on my face

Buzz Aldrin, walking on my face

And the third one is a space man, walking on my face

All on the surfaces, and they're looking at all of the stuff that the moon has got."

Artemis

A heist story... on the moon!

With NASA flinging Artemis 2 around the Moon this month, and with our own feature on Derbyshire’s cosmic connections, not to mention that stunning lunar cover, and our friend Lucie’s brilliantly named daughter, Luna, it felt right to stay on theme. I’ve gone back to a last year to review Artemis by Andy Weir. Now, this isn’t Weir at his absolute best, but that comes with a caveat. I’m measuring it against The Martian and Project Hail Mary, the latter of which is probably my favourite book full stop. Judged on its own terms, though, Artemis is doing something quite different. It’s not a sweeping, save the world sci fi epic, it’s a heist story. On the Moon. And it’s a fun one.

At the centre of it all is Jasmine “Jazz” Bashara, 26, a porter by trade, a smuggler on the side, and a magnet for trouble. She’s scraping by in Artemis, the Moon’s first city, living in what can only be described as a glorified cupboard, while carrying the financial and emotional baggage of accidentally burning down her dad’s welding business. Oops! Jazz is sharp, stubborn, and constantly hustling. The kind of character who might nick your lunch if she had to, but you’d probably let it slide.

What starts as a seemingly straightforward sabotage job, “disable these harvesters, earn a life changing payday”, very quickly spirals into something much bigger. Corporate power plays, organised crime, and a new material that could upend Artemis’s entire economy all come crashing in. Unsurprisingly, Jazz’s plan, never exactly watertight, goes spectacularly wrong, and she finds herself dodging everything from hired killers to lunar security patrols, while also dealing with the fallout of her own decisions and a disapproving father!

The real enjoyment in Artemis is watching Jazz think on her feet as everything unravels. It’s part heist thriller, part survival story, stitched together with Weir’s trademark problem solving and dry humour. If you’ve ever wondered what a working city on the Moon might actually feel like, complete with dodgy deals, improvised engineering, and a fair bit of chaos, this is a fast, scrappy, and thoroughly entertaining ride. It’s very Hans Solo and I am more than OK with that!

Artemis is a an easy 4 out of 5 stars and I can’t wait to read my next Andy Weir novel.

New New Square

Chesterfield Market transformation is ready to welcome visitors

Words: Chesterfield Borough Council

Images: Chesterfield Borough Council & Paul Chapman

Chesterfield’s New Square is now open following a major transformation, creating a flexible, attractive space ready to welcome visitors.

The redesigned square features new high quality paving to improve accessibility, a modern parasol system offering shelter for traders, upgraded lighting and power to support events, new planting to introduce greenery, and stylish street furniture to encourage people to spend more time in the town centre.

The improvements mean New Square can seamlessly host large scale events while still accommodating market stalls on busy trading days.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The transformation of our town centre has created new spaces for events, festivals and community gatherings, and we can’t wait to see people enjoying them this weekend.

“It’s also created a more attractive environment for our fantastic traders, helping to bring more customers into Chesterfield for many years to come. The Market is the heart of our town centre, and these wonderful public spaces will help ensure it remains one of the best in the country.

“We still have more work to do in Rykneld Square and on Corporation Street, but together these improvements will transform our town centre and create great spaces for residents and visitors alike.”

A small amount of snagging work remains in New Square, including the installation of a new bollard system and the completion of a feature timeline charting Chesterfield’s history. These will be finished in the coming month by contractor Thomas Bow.

John Allen, Construction Director at Thomas Bow, said: “We’re proud to have delivered this

transformation of New Square, creating a highquality, durable public space that will support Chesterfield’s market traders, events programme and wider town centre activity for years to come.

“Working closely with Chesterfield Borough Council and local stakeholders, our team has focused on improving accessibility, flexibility and resilience, while ensuring the square remains welcoming and attractive for visitors.

“We look forward to seeing the space come to life during events like the recent Chesterfield Glow Up and beyond.”

The wider Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project also includes Rykneld Square, where a greener, more welcoming space with views of the Crooked Spire will be delivered following archaeological investigations, and Corporation Street, which will provide an enhanced gateway to the town centre later this year.

The project is funded through almost £20 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, split between town centre regeneration and the refurbishment of Stephenson Memorial Hall.

Why Good Sunglasses Are as Important as Sunscreen

When we think about protecting ourselves from the sun, most of us reach for sunscreen. Far fewer consider what prolonged ultraviolet (UV) exposure is doing to our eyes. Yet, like our skin, our eyes are vulnerable to sun damage, and the right sunglasses can make a lasting difference.

UV Protection: The Essential Feature

Ultraviolet radiation is linked to cataracts, macular degeneration and short term conditions such as photokeratitis, essentially sunburn of the eye. Long term exposure can also increase the risk of eyelid cancers and accelerate age related vision problems.

Dark lenses alone are not enough. Sunglasses without certified UV400 protection can do more harm than good, as the tint causes the pupil to dilate, allowing more UV radiation in. Always choose lenses labelled 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Reducing Glare with Polarised Lenses

Glare can impair vision and cause eye strain, particularly when driving or near water. Polarised lenses filter out reflected light from surfaces like roads, water and sand. The result is clearer vision, sharper contrast and reduced fatigue. For driving, sport or holidays, polarised lenses significantly improve comfort.

More Than Sun Protection

Sunglasses also protect against wind, dust, pollution and pollen. Wraparound styles are especially effective, helping to reduce dry eye symptoms, irritation and watering during warmer months.

Does Lens Colour Matter?

Lens tint affects how we see light and contrast. Grey lenses maintain natural colour and suit driving. Brown or amber enhance contrast and depth, ideal for sport. Green offers balance, while yellow improves contrast in lower light but is less suitable in strong sun.

Frame Style: Function and Fit

Wraparound frames provide better coverage, limiting light and particles from the sides. Fashion frames can still offer protection, but lens size and fit are key.

Prescription Sunglasses: Clarity Counts

Prescription sunglasses provide clear vision alongside full UV protection. Available in single vision, bifocal or varifocal options, they can also be polarised for added comfort.

An Investment in Eye Health

High quality sunglasses are more than an accessory. They help protect long term eye health, improve comfort and reduce environmental strain.

Pop in and chat with our in practice experts for personalised advice. We can show you how different lens colours impact contrast, how polarising filters help reduce glare, and the benefits and drawbacks of photochromic lenses.

Peak Vans

5 Star Treatment For Every Customer

Words & images: Simon Paterson

Rich Cope and Eddie Burton aren’t trying to be the cheapest, and that’s exactly the point.

The duo behind Peak Vans first met in 2011 while selling cars at BMW, where both built 5-star reputations, just like every single review Peak Vans has received.

Fast forward to July 2024, and they’ve joined forces to shake up the van market with a simple idea: bring car showroom standards to commercial vehicles, backed by consistently outstanding 5-star customer feedback.

“We wanted to roll out the red carpet for van buyers,” says Rich. “Because usually, you just don’t get that level of service.”

Starting with just two vans, a chair and a lot of graft, the business has grown quickly, but deliberately. It’s still just the two of them, keeping things tight, hands on and high quality.

And that quality starts long before a customer turns up.

“Everything is done properly,” Eddie explains. “Major service, minimum 12 month MOT, advisories sorted. No warning lights, no broken trims, no surprises.”

In other words, they focus on doing the maximum, not the minimum.

Each van is prepared to a standard that means it can stand on its own merits. No hard sell needed. “If we’ve done our job right, the van sells itself,” Rich adds.

That same thinking carries through to aftercare, with a six month warranty included and the flexibility for customers to use any VAT registered garage. It’s all about making things easy.

'Eddie and Rich are fantastic. I went to look at the van just after it had come in, and they told me what needed doing to it. I left a deposit, which they said I could have back if I wasn’t happy. They kept their word, and it’s fantastic, I’m really pleased with it. They even fitted new brake discs and pads for me. The next time our company needs a van, I will definitely be going back. Many thanks to Eddie and Rich.'

Chris and Jemma

By keeping overheads low, they’re able to focus on value rather than price wars.

“We won’t be the cheapest,” says Rich, “but we aim to be the best value.”

Stock typically ranges from £7,000 to £16,000, with most vans between three and seven years old, often one owner with full service history. But here’s where things get interesting… Peak Vans now has access to over 2,000 vehicles.

“If we haven’t got it, we’ll find it,” Eddie says. “Customers tell us what they need, and we match it from a huge pool of vans.”

The buying experience is just as straightforward, appointment only, no pressure, kettle on. Customers are encouraged to take their time, look around and make their own decisions.

And the customer base? As varied as the vans. Tradespeople, families, dog walkers, and even a 70 year old adventurer travelling the country with her dogs and a mattress in the back.

“That’s what we love,” Eddie smiles. “Meeting people and hearing their stories.”

Despite rapid growth, the vision remains grounded: keep it local, keep it personal, and keep standards high.

“We don’t want to be massive,” Rich says. “We just want to be the name people think of when they need a van.”

Looking for your next van?

Give Rich and Eddie a call. If they haven’t got it, they’ll find it, and you’ll get a proper brew while you’re at it.

Chesterfield Postcard Show

5 to15 May 2026

Words & Images: Junction Arts

Chesterfield’s much-loved exhibition of mini masterpieces is back, celebrating its fifth anniversary with a special showcase of original artwork created by local artists.

Organised by local arts charity, Junction Arts and local artist Dave Elsom, the Chesterfield Postcard Show raises vital funds for community arts projects across the town. Last year’s exhibition raised over £1,000, helping support the charity’s regular “Cosy Crafts” warm space sessions, providing creative activities for those experiencing loneliness and isolation.

From 5 to 15 May at Junction Arts’ new home and creative hub, at 37 Station Road in Chesterfield town centre, visitors can purchase postcard-sized artworks, created by both professional artists and the local community, for just £10 each.

Since its launch in 2021, the Chesterfield Postcard Show has displayed nearly 1,500 mini artworks and raised more than £3,500 to support local community arts initiatives.

The theme for this year’s exhibition is “Things We Love.” To mark the five-year milestone, Junction Arts has collaborated with over 40 local artists, each contributing an original A6 postcard-sized piece. The collection will feature a diverse range of media, including illustration, textiles, printmaking, and digital art.

Also new for this year, on Saturday 9 May, visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to get creative themselves with a

Postcard Show Art Club, run by Dave Elsom. The session is suitable for all ages and abilities and costs just £5 per person.

Hannah Bowdler, Development Manager at Junction Arts, said: “This incredible fundraising event showcases local talent, and is an exciting exhibition where people can purchase original artwork at an affordable price, while supporting local community arts projects.

“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary. Many people don’t realise Junction Arts is a charity and events like the Postcard Show, are essential to help us carry out our work.

“We’re expecting an exceptionally high standard this year, so I’d encourage art lovers to come early and pick up a unique piece for a tenner.”
