Hello and welcome to the April edition of S41 Local Magazine!

A couple of weeks ago, either in a moment of optimism or complete foolishness, I packed away 'the big coat'. Within 24 hours it was back out again. Hopefully by the time this edition drops through your letterboxes, we’ll be enjoying a bit of proper T-shirt weather… but as we all know, British spring likes to keep us guessing.

As we move into the brighter days of spring, I’ve been reflecting on what felt like quite a long winter. The lack of sunshine, the lack of tennis, the persistent rain, high energy bills and the postChristmas financial wobble all took their toll. I suspect I won’t be the only one happy to see the back of it.

So… hello spring. Longer days, more tennis, slightly kinder energy bills, and afternoons in the park with the kids and a good book. It already feels better!

This month’s fantastic front cover was created by Tomo, also known as Katie Thompson. It’s a beautiful fantasy depiction of The Shambles in town and, being a complete and utter geek, I love it. You can read all about Tomo’s artistic journey and inspiration inside this month’s magazine.

Tennis plays (pun intended) a huge part in my life, so I’m really excited to share that after months of planning and hard work by the brilliant volunteers at the club, the new café is now open and ready for business. It’s the perfect spot for a business meeting, a catch-up over coffee with friends, or of course a game of tennis. The new season starts in April, so why not pop down for a pint and cheer on the Chesterfield tennis teams? We’re in the first division, you know… April’s 'must-attend event' has to be the Derbyshire Makes Festival, taking place on Chesterfield Market on the 18 April. More than 40 talented artists will be creating work live throughout the day, showcasing the incredible creativity we have right here in our county. It promises to be a brilliant day and I hope to see plenty of you there.

Our What’s On and Regular Events sections have never been bigger, so make sure you keep hold of your copy of S41 until the next edition arrives and start filling those calendars with some fantastic local events.

For this issue’s front cover, we caught up with illustrator and designer Tomo, also known as Katie Thompson, to chat about growing up on a farm near Sheffield, discovering animation through YouTube, and how her work at Sparky Ink continues to shape her creative path.

Tomo studied Graphic Design at Loughborough University after completing a foundation degree at Chesterfield College. Like many creatives, she didn’t start with a rigid career plan. Instead, she followed curiosity and a lifelong interest in storytelling and drawing.

“I always knew I wanted to do something creative,” she says. “When I was younger,

I wanted to be a writer. I used to hand little stories into my teachers every week.”

She grew up on a pig farm in Moss Valley, just outside Sheffield, where her family run Moss Valley Fine Meats. Farming life was a big part of her childhood, but she quickly realised it probably wasn’t the career path for her.

“Farming is really hard work,” she laughs. “Art is also a lot of work, but it’s my work.”

Creativity stood out in a family largely rooted in science and agriculture. “Most of my family studied science at university,” she explains. “I was kind of the creative one. But my mum’s side had a lot of artisans, so maybe it came from there.”

Her real turning point came as a teenager discovering animation online. “At school, art is usually taught as fine art, realism, abstract work, things you see in galleries. I didn’t really realise that drawing cartoons or animation was something you could actually do as a career.”

After discovering animated YouTube content in her mid-teens, she became hooked. “I realised

people were making animated stories and cartoons online, and that you could actually create characters and worlds like that. I started practising constantly after that.”

That passion eventually led her towards graphic design rather than pure animation. The decision was partly practical. “Animation is a very specialised industry and extremely competitive. I chose a broader graphic communication course so I could build design skills alongside illustration and animation. It meant I had more options.”

Those options paid off when she landed a placement at Sparky Ink, a creative studio that works with autistic and disabled young people, and adults through creative workshops. What began as a placement turned into a full-time role after graduation.

“I absolutely love working there,” she says. “Because it’s a small team and I’m the main designer, I get a lot of creative freedom. I can experiment with ideas and help shape the brand,” smiles Katie.

The studio runs creative sessions, coding clubs and workshops designed to make creativity accessible to everyone. It’s work Tomo finds particularly rewarding.

Outside of her day job she keeps busy with illustration projects, volunteering and community art. She has volunteered at Manchester Animation Festival and helped design materials for community events and festivals in Sheffield.

“Animation is actually quite a small industry,” she says. “When you go to events like that you realise everyone kind of knows everyone. It’s really inspiring to see the work people are doing.”

Her artistic influences range widely, from classic painters to modern animation artists. She cites storyboard artist Kevin Molina Ortiz as a big inspiration for his dynamic drawing style, which feels almost like watching animation frame by frame. She also loves the expressive work of Van Gogh and the storytelling found in animated films and series. Those influences helped shape the design for this issue’s front cover. For the Tolkien fans

“I wanted to represent Chesterfield in spring, something colourful and imaginative,” she explains. “When people think of the town they usually think of the Crooked Spire, but I didn’t want to just draw that again.”

Instead, Tomo looked to the Shambles area of the town for inspiration, reimagining the historic street with a slightly fantastical twist.

“The buildings already have a medieval feel, so I leaned into that,” she says. “I added little fantasy elements, almost like something from a storybook, to make the town feel more playful and alive.”

The result is a vibrant piece that blends local architecture with Tomo’s love of animation and storytelling.

For Tomo, the future is less about rigid plans and more about continuing to say yes to opportunities.

“The creative industry can be unpredictable,” she says. “I tend to say yes to things and see where they lead. That’s how most of the best opportunities happen.”

And if this striking cover is anything to go by, it’s a philosophy that’s working just fine.

When two local childminders and long time working mums, Jo and Nicky opened the doors to Kidzlounge in September 2022, they weren’t just launching a before and after school club, they were creating a community hub built on friendship, experience, and a shared passion for supporting families.

After more than a decade working with children across the area, the pair spotted an opportunity to bring something special to Westfield Infant School and Old Hall Junior Schools. What began as a small idea between friends has quickly grown into a thriving wraparound provision supporting over 100 families from both Westfield and Old Hall.

At the heart of Kidzlounge is a simple belief: children deserve a space where they can feel safe, happy, and free to be themselves. This is clear when you step inside to find a warm, friendly environment buzzing with creativity and play. The dedicated team brings energy and care to every session, ensuring each child is welcomed with a smile and supported throughout their time at Kidzlounge.

The before school Breakfast Club offers a calm, nourishing start to the day, while after school sessions provide a chance to unwind with a tasty snack and a wide range of activities. From arts and crafts to imaginative play, building challenges, games, and outdoor adventures in their secure play area, there’s always something to spark curiosity and joy.

What makes Kidzlounge truly stand out is the atmosphere Jo and Nicky have nurtured. It’s a safe place, the walking bus running between schools allows the young children to form friendships, it’s a place where parents feel reassured, and where staff genuinely love what they do.

In just a few short years, Kidzlounge has become more than a wraparound service, it’s an essential part of the school day and a lifeline for busy families.

Weston Park Cancer Charity named as Meadowhall’s 2026 Charity of the Year!

The shopping centre will host a year-long calendar of fundraising events, in support of people and families affected by cancer

We’re delighted to share that Weston Park Cancer Charity has been selected as Meadowhall’s Charity of the Year for 2026.

Our charity has a long-standing relationship with Meadowhall, with the shopping centre acting as a pick-up stop for our free transport service and a regular location for our Big Purple Bus.

Now, the iconic Sheffield establishment will be extending its brilliant support, with a year-long calendar of fun fundraising activities and cancer awareness days.

Shoppers will also be able to support our vital work via the Giving Box located on the Upper Level within Meadowhall.

Every donation will help us to fund groundbreaking research, treatment enhancements, and support services for people in our region who have been impacted by cancer.

Darren Pearce, Centre Director at Meadowhall, has offered his expertise and advice to the charity throughout 2025 – as a member of our volunteer ‘see it. treat it.’ appeal board.

The ‘see it. treat it.’ appeal is raising £1.85m to bring a revolutionary MRI Simulator Cancer Scanning Machine to Weston Park Cancer Centre.

“Many of our staff members have had loved ones cared for at Weston Park Cancer Centre, so the charity is very close to our hearts.

Last month, buildings and landmarks across the region lit up in purple to spread awareness of Weston Park Cancer Charity’s work, to mark World Cancer Day.

By turning purple, regional venues helped to spread the word about the financial, emotional, and practical support we can provide to individuals and families. They also shone a light on the funding we provide for sector-leading research and treatment enhancements.

Meadowhall hosted a packed schedule of activity for Turn It Purple day. More than 30 volunteers, including representatives from GXO Logistics, Pricecheck, Aviva and Gripple, engaged with members of the public throughout the afternoon, spreading awareness about our work.

Meanwhile, team members from Rotherham Hospice and Cancer Alliance hosted a Weston Park Cancer Charity couch area, giving people the opportunity to take a seat, ask questions and discuss any cancer concerns they had. Then, as evening fell, the shopping centre’s iconic purple domes lit up in a brilliant purple glow!

Coming up next, Meadowhall will be hosting Easter themed activities for Weston Park Cancer Charity’s 2026 Bunny Hop campaign, taking place from Saturday 28th MarchSaturday 4th April. Hop on down with the family to take part!

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its momentum. Brown writes with urgency, rarely allowing the plot to slow, and the stakes consistently feel high. The world building is vivid without becoming overwhelming, giving readers just enough detail to imagine the hierarchy and culture of the colour based caste system.

While some elements, such as the competitive academy setting, echo familiar dystopian tropes, Brown injects them with enough intensity and brutality to feel fresh. Darrow himself is a compelling protagonist, driven, flawed and increasingly torn between vengeance and justice.

Overall, Red Rising is a thrilling and emotionally charged sci-fi novel that sets the stage for an ambitious series. It’s an excellent entry point for readers who enjoy high stakes dystopian stories with political depth and I can't wait to get stuck into Golden Son next!

A lasting legacy for the entire community

Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club is proud to unveil its fully redeveloped clubhouse, officially opened on Saturday 28th February during this year’s annual awards celebration. The transformation has been made possible through a remarkably generous donation from the estate of Sheila Glister, a lifelong player, supporter and ambassador for the club.

Honouring Sheila Glister

Sheila represented the Chesterfield first team and the Derbyshire Ladies team for several decades, demonstrating both talent and unwavering commitment to the sport. Even after moving away from the area, she continued to represent the club, reflecting her deep loyalty and passion for Chesterfield.

A Modern Coffee Shop Experience

Her legacy donation has enabled a complete redevelopment of the clubhouse and its offering. Following several months of building work, the venue has been redesigned to look and feel like a modern coffee shop, warm, welcoming and contemporary.

The new clubhouse blends tennis with a modern café-culture feel; barista coffee, craft beers, and vibes straight from the city streets. Members and visitors can enjoy beer on tap, a variety of hot and cold food options, cakes and sweet treats, and an impressive coffee machine serving flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos, all at prices below the current market rate. The refurbishment ensures the clubhouse is not just a sporting facility, but a vibrant social hub for the wider community.

Volunteer Committee Dedication

The project has been carefully overseen by the club’s volunteer committee, who gave countless hours to ensure Sheila’s donation was invested wisely. Wherever possible, materials and services were sourced locally, keeping money in the community while ensuring the refurbishment delivers long-term value for members.

Victoria Oates, Chair of Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club, said: "This redevelopment is a landmark moment for our club. Sheila’s generosity has allowed us to create a space

that truly reflects who we are, welcoming, inclusive and forward-thinking. Our volunteer committee has worked tirelessly to ensure every penny is spent wisely, and we are incredibly proud of what has been achieved. The new clubhouse not only enhances the experience for our members but opens our doors even wider to the local community."

Enhancing the Club Experience

The grand opening formed part of the club’s annual awards celebration, bringing together members past and present to honour achievements on court while marking an exciting new chapter off it.

While the club already boasts three indoor tarmac courts, three outdoor artificial grass courts and four outdoor tarmac courts, several floodlit, the improved clubhouse significantly enhances the overall experience for players and visitors alike.

Tennis for Everyone

Beyond facilities, the club continues to champion the message that tennis is for everyone. With structured junior programmes, adult beginner sessions, social tennis and competitive league teams, there are opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to get involved. Whether picking up a racket for the first time or returning after years away, the club offers a supportive and inclusive environment.

The new clubhouse strengthens that inclusive ethos. Parents can now relax with quality coffee while children attend coaching sessions. Members can meet friends for a drink after matches. Visitors can drop in for refreshments even if they are not playing. The aim is simple: to create a community space that welcomes everyone.

Lasting Legacy

Sheila Glister’s generosity has left a lasting mark, not only in bricks and mortar, but in community spirit. Thanks to her legacy and the commitment of the volunteer committee, the club is now better equipped than ever to serve future generations.

Looking for a brilliant day out this spring? Good news - Derbyshire Makes Chesterfield is back, and it won’t cost you a penny.

On Saturday 18 April, the town will burst into life as Derbyshire County Council’s flagship cultural programme returns for its second year, bringing a full day of creativity, colour and community spirit right into the heart of town. Programmed by local arts charity, Junction Arts.

For one day only, Chesterfield Market will be transformed into a buzzing creative hub. At the centre of it all is the headline event, The Great Chesterfield Make Off, where 40 talented local artists will create brand-new work live, right before your eyes.

Picture the scene: painters turning blank canvases into masterpieces, makers shaping and sculpting, designers sketching bold new ideas — all while you wander through the stalls soaking up the atmosphere. It’s your chance to see creativity in action, chat to the artists about their work and maybe even discover a new favourite.

There will also be hands-on workshops where you try something new — perfect for families, friends or anyone feeling inspired. Around the town centre, internationally renowned performance artist Matt Pang will be bringing high-energy street performances.

Alongside the live action, the festival also shines a spotlight on Chesterfield’s rich heritage. Discover the delicate, endangered craft of lacemaking and meet the skilled people keeping this tradition alive. Plus, don’t miss a powerful photographic exhibition celebrating the cultural leaders shaping Derbyshire’s creative future.
