The community magazine for Ashgate, Barlow, Brockwell, Cutthorpe, Highfield, Linacre, Loundsley Green, Piccadilly and Upper Newbold
Hello and welcome to the July edition of S41 Local Magazine! The weather has been nothing short of glorious! I can’t remember being this tanned without leaving the UK for warmer climates. Now I have written this, you can guarantee you are reading this on a rainy day; sorry about that!
As a lifelong tennis player and fan, I love this time of year. Bekah and I went to the Nottingham Open last month and I had the best time! I witnessed some amazing tennis whilst Bekah sought shade and air conditioning! To be fair...it was 30 degrees and tennis matches last a long-time, especially when you have been dragged along by your tennis obsessed partner! Roll on Wimbledon...
Bekah’s mum is currently living in our dining room (which the kids love) following the sale of her house and the pending completion of the new one. It’s great having a live-in babysitter, even though, it’s like walking into the home of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, with the grandparents in bed downstairs! We love you, Sue.
Florie is in her final weeks at Westfield Infant School, which makes me a little sad. Westfield Infant School is a world class, outstanding, super-duper school and I couldn’t be anymore grateful to all the staff that have made the start of Florie's educational journey so impactful, engaging and fun. She will... we will...surely miss it.
Our July and August diaries are full, and we cannot wait to attend some the wonderful, local events happening this summer, including:
Medieval Times (Mary Swanick School)
Chesterfield Pride
Chesterfield Children’s Festival Gate to Southwell Festival Russfest (The Holme Hall Pub)
This month's front cover was hand drawn by James Hirst, a work experience student from Brookfield Community School and I am sure we can all agree...he has quite the talent. It was a pleasure having James in the office for the week and we wish him all the best for the future.
Whatever you are doing this July, I hope the sun smiles upon you and thanks for reading... again!
Peace, love and positivity
Simon, Bekah, Evangeline and Florie

Celebrating Creativity & Community
Words: James Hirst

We recently had the pleasure of James Hirst spending some time in the offices of S40 & S41 Local for his work experience. James has created the fabulous artwork for the cover, on these pages and has written about the Chesterfield Art Trail.
I believe that my desire to create has been inspired by surroundings growing up in Chesterfield and I am a student at Brookfield Community School currently studying Maths, Geography and Art for my A Levels. I chose to pursue A Level Art as I have had a passion for drawing and creating art for as long as I can remember.
Sometimes forgotten pieces of artwork featuring in the Chesterfield Art Trail are so influential and they help spark creativity and imagination throughout our community. It is incredible how powerful some of these artworks are as they can transform dull and boring areas into expressive and artistic places for everyone to enjoy. It is also a great way for artists to be able to portray messages and express themselves through works of art. I would encourage people (especially those with children) to complete the trail or just visit and appreciate a few of these amazing works of art on our doorstep.
The trail is made up of some iconic artworks, recognisable by almost everyone in Chesterfield and the surrounding areas such as the “Growth” located up on the Horns Bridge roundabout symbolising the growth of Chesterfield. However, there are many other pieces which you may not have stumbled across yet, such as the less well known, but equally impressive, “Woodland Guardians” located on the southern edge of Inkersall.
Each piece of artwork along the trail brings with it a different story which can give meaning or could be interpreted by people in their own way - this is the beauty of artwork.
For me, what makes the Chesterfield Art Trail so impressive is the wide variety of different styles,
materials, techniques, scales and meanings behind each piece from bronze lifelike statues to hand painted ceramic tiles making the trail worthwhile for people with all types of interests and tastes in art.
The location of each artwork is presented on the Derbyshire Borough Council website along with a picture, name and description of most of the artworks. However there are some pieces on the trail which have no information and just a location making them exciting to discover.
The street art (such as the artworks featuring in the art trail), unlike most art galleries are completely free for everyone to view and enjoy. I urge everyone to encourage street art and creativity within their local areas.
To combine my love of art and appreciation of the Chesterfield Art Trail, I have drawn the sculpture, 'A System of Support and Balance', located just outside of the main entrance to the new Derbyshire Magistrates Court and 'Infinity' opposite Ravenside Retail Park. My drawing style was inspired by local artist Josh Bramley who’s amazing artworks depict some of the sculptures featured on the Chesterfield Art Trail such as the infamous George Stephenson statue located outside the main entrance to the Chesterfield railway station. I really like Josh's work as he creates hyper-realistic drawings of the landmarks but disrupts them using unrealistic features. His artwork of the Saltergate Miners statue (Pictured on the cover of the Winter 2025 S40 & S41 Local) uses a giant hand holding the statue whilst another hand places a traffic cone on top... you know, the cone that high spirited locals always seem to find for the statue!
ED: Thanks James, I love the artwork you've created for us and hope your words inspire people to get out and visit these wonderful art pieces around our town.

1st Class Kitchen’s Chatsworth Road showroom is gleaming today, the sun is shining, and the displays of kitchens, appliances and finishes look stunning. I’m in to catch up with Helen and Dave Oxley, and daughter Charlotte, family owners.
It’s always nice to spend time chatting to the guys and this time they start with news of a great summer offer. Order a new kitchen from 1st Class Kitchens and receive a Free Siemens Vented Hob RRP: £2399 (below) when purchasing four other appliances with a kitchen, running until the end of September (T’c & C’s apply) .
Dave says, “If you take a look through the Siemens range there are some great new innovations in the range and together with the hob you’re getting for free, you can have a fantastic future proof kitchen.”
Next up is a new range of doors, the ‘Brackenberry’ a solid timber, shaker style door painted in a new colour palette. “The painted doors are Ash as this lets the grain of the wood show through once painted, the doors are also available in traditional oak, and the new slim shaker frame really do create a standout kitchen,” says Dave.
Available in five new colours they support the present trend for customers wanting to move away from the grey tones favourited for a few years, and move towards the relaxed earthy tones people are prefering.
Check out the five new colours (above) and the shaker styles in the pictures opposite.
Helen was keen to point out the number of media walls, bedrooms, home offices and boot rooms they’ve been doing recently. “Although kitchens are the mainstay of our business, customers are coming back for additional rooms and recommending us to friends and family,” says Helen.
“We’ve also done quite a few storage solutions for hallways, simply using sliding doors allows us to maximise the storage space without eating into the hallway or room space available. They’re a great solution in spaces people often think won’t be large enough to build in fitted bespoke units.”
1st Class Kitchens has been in business now for 21 years, Dave worked as a sole trader for ten years before this, and they are assisted by a qualified team of time-honoured trades people. They are more than happy to take care of all aspects of your installation, from the initial chat in the showroom to the bunch of flowers left on the completed kitchen worktop.
If you’re in the market for a new kitchen, bedroom or a bespoke tailor-made space give them a call and pop into the showroom on Chatsworth Road opposite Majestic Wine. Their coffee is always great, so they are defo worth a visit and don’t forget to tell them where you got their details… S40 Local!

These days lots of people, including me, work from home, loving the freedom from the commute to work, saving the time and feeling smug about not adding to the ozone layer with carbon emissions, but there are times, just sometimes, when that feels a bit lonely and almost isolating. I got a dog when my daughter went to university and he is great company, but his conversation is really limited. Woof is not the answer to everything! These days with increasing energy costs, it can be tempting to travel to a warm office too, but what if this was just on your doorstep and ready with a warm welcome?
Sitting in a café can be good, but costly to the pocket and the waistline, and inevitably there will be some distractions. You can’t really take a work call in a busy café, even if you could hear yourself you probably wouldn’t want others to hear you. This is where spaces such as co-working spaces come in. If you look online for co-working spaces there’s only one in Chesterfield, Monkey Park in Brampton. So, what exactly is a co-working space?
Simon Redding, one of the Directors from Monkey Park showed us around recently. The corner building on Chester Street was once home to a bathroom showroom and there are still quirky reminders of this, you can have a private space behind a shower screen or make a private call in a tiny nook. It is a light and airy space above the main hub of the social enterprise, designed to complement the

workings below. There are desks that you can hire on a daily, weekly or membership basis for less than £5 per day (fully flexible membership) and superfast broadband and coffee and tea are included! There is also access to a meeting room if you need it.
It is important to note that it is so much more than a desk away from your home environment, it is an opportunity to have ‘work’ colleagues and a sense of community that you can access when it suits you.
“The space has been the home to a diverse range of individuals over the years.” Simon tells us, “Including freelancers and those running their own small businesses, but also students needing a space away from home to complete important coursework, ‘hybrid’ workers who didn’t want to commute to the office and even a photographer.”
We can see that it is an excellent space to get a few things done uninterrupted by the hubbub of life. The eclectic mix of people makes the space what it is, and there are plans to encourage the community spirit by offering activities such as nature walks and mindfulness. Monkey Park’s co-working space provides a chance to network and grow professionally. It is hoped that as the community grows there will be opportunities for people who use the space to showcase their work and also invite others in to cover topics that are common in all small businesses. The starting point is to build a bigger community in the space.
Local artist Lucie Maycock (Chesterfield’s Artist in Residence) has recently given the space a beautiful new look by adding murals to the walls. Keen to show off the new artwork and remind local people about the space, there is an open day on Friday 25 July from 2pm to 6pm. If you are interested in looking around, you can just pop along any time during these times and to see what the space offers and enjoy a glass of wine or a cuppa.
Space available on a daily, weekly or membership basis.

Looking for ways to make the most of the Peak District this July and August? Whether you’re a local or visiting Derbyshire for the first time, summer in the Peaks offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and vibrant events. Here are five unmissable experiences to enjoy in the heart of the UK’s oldest national park. Buxton’s Festival Season: July in the Peaks wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Buxton’s renowned festival scene. The Buxton International Festival is a cultural gem, showcasing world-class opera, classical music, and literary talks in iconic venues like the Buxton Opera House. Running alongside is the Buxton Fringe Festival, one of the largest openaccess arts festivals in England, with comedy, theatre, music, and family-friendly performances popping up across the town. It’s the perfect blend of elegance and fun – with something for every age and interest.
Celebrate at Summer Festivals and Shows: Organised by Junction Arts, this joyful two-day event on the 26th and 27th of July transforms Queen’s Park into a creative playground. Families can enjoy music, dance, storytelling, art sessions, and interactive performances, perfect for sparking imagination and celebrating community spirit. If you’re after a true countryside celebration, head to one of the Peak District’s big summer events. The Y Not Festival (early August, Pikehall) brings together top music acts, street food, and festival vibes for all ages. Prefer something more traditional? Try the Bakewell Country Festival in mid-August, with livestock displays, rural crafts, classic cars, and local food stalls, it’s a great day out for families and anyone wanting to experience a classic country show.
Discover the Art of Well Dressing: Unique to Derbyshire and parts of the Peaks, well dressing is a centuries-old tradition that continues to bloom each summer. Between
May and September, over 80 villages decorate their wells and springs with elaborate floral mosaics made from natural materials like petals, seeds, and leaves. Villages such as Tissington, Ashbourne, and Youlgreave come alive with these colourful displays, accompanied by processions, blessings, and village fêtes. It’s a brilliant way to connect with local history and community spirit.
Walk or Cycle through Iconic Landscapes: The Peak District is a walker’s paradise. Whether you’re scaling the Great Ridge from Mam Tor to Lose Hill, exploring the wild moorland of Kinder Scout, or wandering through the lush, limestone valley of Dovedale, there are trails to suit every level. For those on two wheels or with pushchairs, the Monsal Trail and Tissington Trail offer flat, scenic routes along former railway lines, with tunnels, viaducts, and picnic spots galore. Pack your walking boots and a camera... you’ll want both!
Explore Caves and Historic Gems: The Peak District isn’t just about scenery, it’s rich with underground wonders and historic sites. In Castleton, descend into the spectacular Peak Cavern, also known as the “Devil’s Arse,” or marvel at the glittering minerals in Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern. Prefer above ground? Head to Haddon Hall, a beautifully preserved medieval manor near Bakewell, complete with gardens and summer heritage events. Or, visit Eyam, the famous “plague village,” to learn how a 17th-century community made a heroic sacrifice for the greater good.
Plan Your Summer Adventure: With so much to see and do, the Peak District is a summer playground full of charm, culture, and countryside magic. Whether you’re dancing at a festival, enjoying a peaceful walk, or admiring village traditions, there’s something for everyone in Derbyshire’s rolling hills.

Words & Images: Cromford Steam Rally
Cromford Steam Rally was first established in 1970, the show was held on Cromford meadows in the village of Cromford, as the show grew, it moved to High Acres Farm, Dewey Lane Tansley, Brackenfield where it resides today.
In 2023 Cromford Steam Rally Society became a registered charity and this momentous change altered the basic structure of the organisation, redirecting their aims whilst maintaining our original ethos.
This year the event takes plave over the weekend of 2 to 3 August 2025 at High Acres Farm, Dewy Lane, Brackenfield DE55 6DB and promises to be bigger and better than ever.
This year Cromford Steam Rally has expanded, not all sections are in the usual area as they have made room for new exhibits and displays. The military section is a lot bigger this year allowing expansion of displays and vehicles plus they have two new sections; the car section now has a modern classic area and a small 'invite only' modern working truck section. There will also be more exhibits in the motorcycle, tractor and stationary engine areas with the working plant area seeing more plant than ever.
There will be parades in the main arena from the regular vehicle sections, including steam engines, commercials, military, motorcycles, tractors, vintage & classic cars, along with a few surprises on the day. Also at the event will be an olde tyme fair, fair organs, along with the model tent, bygones, Trade and Charity Stalls, and not forgetting hot and cold refreshments.
Please check out their social media and website for more info and be sure to check back from time to time, as more things are added.
On the first weekend in August 1970, a small group of enthusiasts gathered in the historic village of Cromford to enjoy their veteran machines, lovingly preserved and restored. They probably had no idea that their little gathering would grow into one of the great annual events in the North Midlands: The Cromford Steam Rally. Within a couple of years of that modest beginning, the gathering grew into a much larger celebration of a bygone age. As well as the steam engines, always the main attraction, old cars and lorries joined in, tractor enthusiasts added a fine array of farming machines and stationary engines, motorcycles, rural crafts, models and miniature steam engines added extra dimensions. Soon, thousands of people were
coming from far and wide to enjoy this unique panorama of nostalgia and entertainment that Cromford Steam Rally provided.

It's estimated that something like half a million people have passed through the gates of the rally field.

Since that first modest gathering in 1970, many things have changed, not least the cost and difficulty of restoring and preserving the ancient machines at the heart of our rally, yet the numbers and quality of the rally exhibits are greater than ever before.

Neon Caverns is a new solo show by artist Alex Billingham. Alex asks – how do bodies considered ‘Other’ connect with nature? All too often ‘different’ becomes unnatural, becomes dangerous. But nature is built of change and fluidity. How do we connect with our planet, with plant growth, moving tides and ancient rocks and structures? Can we come together to help each other survive and maybe even thrive?
Neon Caverns is an amazing sensory experience featuring wrap around film projections, sculptural playable elements, crystals, and a projection pool. Share space and time away from the everyday in this fun, vibrant shelter where one world mixes with another!

A new and very spooky series of events are set to take place through the summer in Chesterfield.
The Chesterfield Great Haunted Pub Tour is a new variation of the pub tours run by Shaun Stevenson since 2019. We asked Shaun why he had created the new tour. “The good folk of Chesterfield seem fascinated by ghost stories and the gruesome details that form their origin. We decided to concentrate on the haunted pubs and allow more time to delve deep into the historical detail and the paranormal activity, keeping it a daytime tour as some of
the stories are just too scary”, Shaun replied.
The twisted history of many Chesterfield pubs has always included a ghost story or two. From horrific murders to tragic fires, the stories behind the hauntings will unfold on this new tour. Each story is delivered in person by blind tour guide, Shaun - who sees the world very differently. Fortunately, there is an opportunity to purchase a stiff drink during the tour, as it stops at some of the pubs. All told, the tour takes around five hours but covers a distance of less than a mile, and is largely dog friendly.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the tour begins at midday from the Pig & Pump on Saturday 19 July, 16 August and 13 September.
You can turn up on the day and pay in cash, £10 per person, but preferably book and pay in advance, discounted to £8.
Contact Shaun on 07908 183160 or see the webste below for details of all tours including Bakewell and The Brampton Mile.
