The community magazine for Ashgate, Barlow, Brockwell, Cutthorpe, Highfield, Linacre, Loundsley Green, Piccadilly and Upper Newbold
Hello and welcome to the June edition of S41 Local Magazine!
The last six weeks have been challenging, to say the least! One of my oldest and dearest friends tragically took his own life, and coming to terms with that loss has been incredibly difficult. He is the second friend I have lost to suicide in just five years. You might be wondering, “Why share something so personal in a community magazine?” The answer is simple: because more men need to talk.
If you're struggling, please reach out. You are not alone. You are loved. And there is help there.
Charities like Andy’s Man Club and Suicide Sucks are doing amazing work - offering safe spaces, support, and hope.
#ItsOkToTalk
So what’s happening in this edition?
Paul (S40 Mag) and I went to the Chesterfield Postcard Show at West Studios. After viewing hundreds of entries, I decided to feature a postcard illustration of Stanage Edge by Claire Walker, and I am sure we can all agree she has quite the talent!
As a Heaton Street resident, I’m delighted to see our neighbour, Elsie Moss Botanicals, featured in this edition. I'm excited to share her inspiring journey - from primary school teacher to local business owner. The street has never smelt better!
Paul’s interview with Brookfield Community School student and possible future Formula 1 champion, Noah Young, is a great read. Noah is a hugely talented young driver with a deep passion for all things motorsports.
As always there’s a lot going on in our What’s On section, particularly this time of year when the weather is nice!
Bekah and I are taking the girls to London for a few days over half-term, which we are looking forward to. Although, my bank balance may take a loss it cannot afford!
Whatever you are doing this June, I hope the sun smiles upon you and thanks for reading... again!
Peace, love and positivity

This May marked the fourth year of Junction Arts Chesterfield Postcard Show, a much-loved celebration of creativity and community spirit. Hosted at West Studios on Sheffield Road, the exhibition ran for 10 days and showcased an incredible 401 original postcard-sized artworks by 116 individual artists and 9 local groups, all exploring the theme of HOME.
"Every year we feature a postcard from the show on our front cover and this wonderful illustration of Stanage Edge by Claire Walker is this year's choice. it's stunning ." Simon, S41 Magazine Editor.

Artists, local creatives, schools, families, and community groups came together to donate their artwork in support of Junction Arts, a Chesterfield-based community arts charity. Funds raised from this year’s show will support Cosy Crafts—a free, fortnightly, artist-led workshop group that offers a warm, welcoming space for local people to get creative, connect, and find support. The group is part of the national Warm Spaces initiative, helping individuals manage the challenges of the costof-living crisis.
Thanks to generous donations and postcard sales, the 2025 show raised just shy of £1000—enough to fund Cosy Crafts for another three months when its current funding ends. A fantastic achievement!
With this year’s event barely over, the team at Junction Arts is already looking ahead. 2026 marks the charity’s 50th anniversary, and plans are underway for a special edition of the Postcard Show to celebrate its legacy and impact.
The first step? Finding a new venue in Chesterfield town centre to host the exhibition and a series of celebratory events. If you're interested in supporting next year’s show or know a space that could host it, Junction Arts would love to hear from you!

With a recent relaxed TV appearance on James Martin’s Saturday Morning show and an award for Pub Restaurant Chef of the Year 2024 you might be surprised to find Chris Mapp, owner of the Tickled Trout in Barlow, unloading a boot full of plants for the pub. As I arrived at the pub this is just typical of the never-ending list of jobs that anyone running a successful gastro pub and restaurant takes on each day.
It’s a while since we’ve met and in April the pub closed for the trades to come in and refurbish the place top to bottom, check out the photos (over page), the place looks fab. A different feel from old, very five star boutique hotel feel and on the doorstep in Barlow, but still a relaxed, inviting place to eat where we’re all made to feel welcome.
11 years on and Chris described how he set out to create a pub that the village could be proud of, with the AA Rosette awarded in 2024.
Chris has ensured the Tickled Trout has stood the test of time, especially overcoming challenges in the last few years and has managed to take the pub from strength to strength from when he bought it in 2014. "It was a typical village drinkers’ pub," says Chris, "It needed some TLC and I was excited at the opportunity that presented itself."
Chesterfield has been home to Chris since he was nine years old. His parents were always in hospitality, his dad founded the Tom Cobleigh pub chain, and they were landlords when he was a baby so it was in his blood. However, Chris’ first job was in telecoms, before a chance conversation landed him his first job in a 5 star London Hotel’s kitchen in 2001.
“It was here that I fell in love with cooking,” says Chris. "I then moved to work and train at Gordon Ramsay's and Marcus Wareing’s Michelin starred Pétrus restaurant, I later moved to The Greenhouse in Mayfair, a two Michelin star restaurant.
"In 2005 I teamed up with Paul Ainsworth, a dear friend, to open and build the successful No.6 in Padstow."
Cornwall was fine but Chris was growing homesick for Derbyshire and his hometown, Chesterfield. "Cornwall is great in the summer, but it’s very remote and quiet in the off seasons."
So in 2009 Chris took a slight change of course and retrained as an Osteopath, carrying out private chef work to fund his study. He completed a masters in London over four years and then returned home, intending to practice as an osteopath. However, passing the Ticked Trout in his family home village he saw that the Tickled Trout was up for sale, he took a look and was hooked.
Chris is always looking for opportunities to share his love of cooking through demonstrations which he has done across the country, and it was through these demos that he formed a relationship with James Martin and was approached to appear on his Saturday morning cookery show.
"The whole crew and James himself were just fantastic and friendly, they helped calm the nerves. I also travelled down with Alysia, the Yorkshire Forager, a close mate of mine, it was a huge relief to have her alongside me there to help me through it."
See ITVx, S8 Ep:14 from 4 April 2025, (scan the QR code) to see Chris in action "I prepared one of my signature dishes, our alreadyfamous spiced cod scotch egg with curry mayonnaise, a homage to my days in Cornwall with Paul Ainsworth. James is such a brilliant professional, it’s very easy being with him, he makes it go extremely smoothly and there’s always room for a chuckle during filming!"
Chris works hard with apprenticeships at the pub, he’s had nine apprentices who have moved on successfully to new Restaurants. Through the Springboard program he helps youngsters and the disadvantaged into hospitality. "It’s great to be able to give people the chance to cook, many simply don’t get the chance and I really enjoy spending time encouraging people. Recently Abbie, from Newbold has been studying an advanced pastry course and is producing some fabulous desserts for our menu."
The Tickled Trout takes pride in sourcing as much produce locally as possible and if you visit their website, they have a ‘food map’ showing who they use. They have their own kitchen garden in the village and compost almost all their food waste, focusing on being as sustainable as possible. This approach was also taken with the recent refurbishment with
a local artist, Val Hudson, commissioned for artwork and local contractors and suppliers used throughout including S40 Local advertiser Ideal Carpets.
There has to be a love of fresh fish when you run a pub called The Tickled Trout and it can’t get any fresher than what Chris serves. He has suppliers call him with the catch they make in Cornwall each day, it’s then driven up and delivered to his fridge ready for the kitchen the same day!
Chris is keen to be a supportive part of the village community, they sponsor ‘The Red Barrows’ as seen on Britain’s Got Talent and always ensure the pub is at the centre of the annual Barlow Carnival.
If all this has you feeling hungry, at the minute the menu features the scotch egg as seen on James Martin’s Saturday Morning, mains of steamed cod with muscle cream sauce, an excellent pork dish, côte de porc sourced from Ashover, and a lamb dish using meat from Highfield House Farm. Chris adds "To finish off, our caramelised apple tarte tatin is fabulous to share, but you’ll need to order before your main as they are always cooked from fresh, it’s a dish I picked up from Marcus Wareing in Pétrus and I can wholly recommend it, like anything on our menu!"
But it’s not all fancy, there is always pizza on the menu using their homemade sourdough, and a pub quiz on Tuesday night, what’s not to like?
It’s been a tough few years in hospitality, COVID, the constant increases in cost, labour and business rates, but Chris works hard to create a place to enjoy quality cuisine, last year picking up ‘Pub Restaurant Chef of the Year 2024’, awarded by Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh. He quips, "I thought I was there just to make up the numbers, but the vote was unanimous."
With regards to James Martin’s Saturday Morning (Scan the QR code to view), he has already been invited back to the show and adds, “The TV show has over 1.5m live viewers, plus those watching on catch-up, which is huge. I excited to be helping to put Barlow and Chesterfield on the map… I envisage that the lads in the kitchen will be making hundreds of scotch eggs!”

Meet Lisa Hutchinson from Elsie Moss Botanical
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: Elsie Moss Botanical
Elsie Moss Botanical is a small local business selling natural handmade, soaps, bath soaks, skincare, shampoo bars and aromatherapy blends. Now based in Brampton on Heaton Street I called in to find out her back story. Lisa Hutchinson is the owner of Elsie Moss, the name of her grandmother, who was Brampton born and bred, Lisa is clearly proud to take her name for the business. Lisa was a primary school teacher for many years, getting ready for a change she gave up the job and took a 12-month trip, backpacking around the world!
On return, her friend offered her a job opening and running the cafe in the High Peak Bookshop and it was at this time that Lisa’s partner bought her a hand made soap on a trip. Inspired to make some soap she purchased ‘The Handmade Soap’ book. “I've used handmade soaps for years to reduce plastic waste, it all started with the book," she adds.
Lisa walked me through the soap making process. “I start by mixing caustic soda and distilled water to make a lye solution. Adding butters and oils to the lye creates a base, then the essential oils and natural clays for colouring go in and the mixture is poured into a mould. A chemical reaction takes place and the soap starts to set and ‘gel’, it sits in the moulds overnight, then I unmould them the next day. I slice the loaves of soap into bars and stamp them with my logo, they then must sit and cure for four weeks before they can be used.” A five-week process from start to finish, and it felt like Lisa was explaining how to bake a cake slowly!
Lisa’s very first attempts at soap making worked well and she made some perfectly usable soap, she admitted to be good at following a recipe. "Soap making is an age-old process, previously ash was a key ingredient, I love that I’m keeping alive a tradition,” says Lisa.
Today she creates large batches of about 250 bars at a time and loves to create new products adding in natural scents and oils. We did a quick calculation and reckon Lisa has handmade about 25,000 bars of soap to date.
I asked when she started Elsie Moss Botanical full time? “It started as a hobby, but it was lockdown when I built a website and started selling online. When things opened again, I stood on markets and started supplying businesses wholesale.
Lisa moved house during lockdown and a garage workshop was on the list of requirements so she
could step up the business. “It’s very different from my previous jobs which involved people management, today I manage just one person, myself!
“I love the whole creative process, being in control of all the elements, the scents, colours, the branding, labelling and the way the products are presented right through to understanding the profit margin on each product.”
In the interim Lisa has picked up some prestigious resellers, Chatsworth for instance, where her products are available in all outlets.
Taking on the shop on Heaton Street, behind Libby’s has helped Lisa set boundaries and schedule her work, it was 2 November when she opened the door.
“I love to see my regular customers calling in, my best-selling products are still the ‘calm’, ‘breath’ and ‘happy’ originals that I made from the start,” says Lisa.
The bath salts on the shelves are presented so perfectly, tied with a little spoon to dispense them into the bath, she was also excited about her skincare products, the research that has gone into them, understanding the properties the ingredients bring, “complete skin food with nothing that’s not needed” she adds.
Starting in July there will be a series of workshops running at Heaton Street, the first will run in conjunction with a ceramicist to make a wax melt burner and the fragrance to burn. Later, other products will follow so follow Lisa on socials to stay informed of dates.
Lisa’s transition from teacher to maker and business owner has been a slow one, but this has allowed her to get things right and ensure she stays true to her original values, so much so she still has the first bar of soap she made. "Looking back I would never have believed the change was possible," says Lisa.
Call into Elsie Moss Botanical on Heaton Street to buy some soap, say hello to Lisa and enjoy the aroma, She’s open Thu to Sat 10am to 4pm, the other days she’ll be busy making soaps and products of course!

Noah Young has just turned 15, and competes in the Ginetta Junior Championship, the same race series as Harry Bartle that we’ve featured recently and coincidentally lives around the corner from Harry, in Somersall.
Dad, Ash, dropped me an email a while ago to see if I wanted to chat about his new racing career. Of course, I’m always keen to spread the word about local achievements but this felt a little de ja vu’ish!
I caught up with Ash, Noah’s dad whilst Noah was across the road at Brookfield Community School studying.
“Noah had always wanted to have a go at karting but thought he was too old and had missed the boat,” explains Ash. “We got in touch with Ginetta to see if they had trial days and were able to line him up with a drive, there was no plan to race, just a chance to have a go.”
The drive went well, Noah clearly had talent, and loved it. He performed well and went on to try for a scholarship place but couldn’t secure a spot. “We had a family chat and decided we’d see if we could put Noah in a car and give him two years to see how he performs,” says Ash.
Ash runs a successful Sheffield marketing agency, Evoluted, and during lockdown established CarMats. co.uk, based in Sheepbridge they set up their own eCommerce site and the business has gone from strength to strength, growing massively in just a few years - selling car mats!
“We teamed up with Performance One Motorsport and were pleased to see Noah on the grid at Donington in April,” smiles Ash. Testing started in November and it was a steep learning curve for all involved, Noah had never done anything like this and to roll up to the starting grid was, I’m sure, equally amazing and scary for Noah and his family.
Noah embraced the challenge. In Race 1, he kept his cool in a packed field to finish 16th, gaining valuable experience and settling into life in the fast lane.
But it was Race 2 where Noah really turned heads. Starting from 23rd on the grid, he delivered a sensational drive through the field to secure a top 10 finish - a standout result for a complete newcomer. His performance also earned him first place in the Ginetta Junior Freshman Class, which is awarded to drivers entering the championship with no previous racing experience.
Unfortunately, contact from another car forced an early retirement in the final race of the weekend, but Noah's debut had already made a serious statement.
After the first round at Donington, Jack Robert, Performance One Motorsport’s Team Principal was full of praise: "Noah’s performance this weekend was nothing short of outstanding.
"To come into such a competitive field with zero prior race experience and deliver the kind of results he did, it shows just how much potential he has. He’s calm, focused, and eager to learn. We’re really excited about what’s to come."
This is fantastic feedback from a seasoned pro and shows a promising future for Noah.
When I met with Ash it was just after the second race of the series at Silverstone. “Based on the first outing we had high hopes for Noah. Qualifying was going well and he was destined for a top 10 start but electrical problems with
the car meant he didn’t qualify, an exposed wire blowing a fuse leading to a start from the back of the grid.”
"From the three races he went from 24th to 22nd place, in the second he finished 13th and in the third he was taken off the circuit by another driver and finished 18th. There’s a lot of contact in this sport."
With almost 30 cars starting on the grid it's a good performance, there have only been two rounds with six remaining. "Looking at the future rounds we're looking forward to Zandvoort which is also an F1 circuit the most but the next round is this weekend in Oulton and then Snetterton at the start of July," says Ash.
I asked what Noah does away from school? "Apart from playing squash he spends a lot of time on the driving simulator, all the tracks are on there so he can learn the layout before racing. He also races online on iRacing, which allows him to race real time against other drivers," says Ash.
Ash was keen to express his thanks to Brookfield for the support they’ve given Noah, allowing days away from school to get to tracks.
So, we’re just two race weekends into the 16 events Noah will be attending in his two-year plan. We’ll be checking in to see how he’s going, and I still can’t believe we have two such talented young drivers, living in our community, a stone’s throw away from each other.
If you want to follow Noah’s journey on and off the track? Catch all the action behind the scenes by following him on the socials below and if you missed Harry's story you can read it at S40 Local as below.

A group of passionate Chesterfield potters whose much-loved classes are under threat have come together to launch an initiative aimed at creating a new community space where anyone can experience the joys of creating with clay.
Creative Community Pottery is an inclusive group of enthusiastic amateur potters who met at local adult education classes. With classes becoming more scarce, and some even threatened with closure, the group were inspired to take matters into their own hands.
As a member of the group explained, “We are all just too invested, emotionally and creatively, to sit back and watch our valuable access to creative learning and rejuvenating supportive social space be taken away.”
The group has launched a fundraising campaign to raise money to buy a kiln and other specialist equipment, and members have already been busy selling their handiwork at markets as well as other fundraising ideas. They are also looking for local organisations, businesses and makers who might be interested in sponsoring their efforts and for premises for the group that will keep their activities within the local area.
Creative Community Pottery will be a space to benefit the whole community through inclusive access to creative pottery classes and development of makers’ facilities. Its aim is to provide a new creative space where experienced potters can rub shoulders with new
starters having their first attempt at working with clay. Local potter and pottery teacher Clare Gage is involved with this group. Her love of pottery began as a child and was nurtured through regular family pottery classes and she is now passing on those skills to adults and families. She said, “I want to support this group to widen the access to these experiences. For me it’s important to develop everyone’s creative design skills and I’m blown away with the work that’s created in class.’
“The group are also passionate about the health and wellbeing benefits of lifelong learning and the community connections that can appear in the classroom. The opportunity to be creative has tangible benefits to people’s mental health and the physical skills are proven to improve dexterity and strength. The social connections are also vital. The pottery is a place for learning, creativity and laughter and we don’t want to lose that.”
Visit their crowdfunder to support their efforts to fund their first kiln.
