S40 Local

Make it yours.

Hello Chatsworth Road Festival Attendees.

I’ll say no more about the Festival, after all it only occupies this edition up to page 32, so there might be enough there to satisfy those who want to know more. All I’ll say is please take part and get involved if you can. I only have one other thing to say and that’s a huge thanks to Matt Cockayne from Goo Design for this month’s fantastic cover picture. Matt is a local artist from Chesterfield… but formerly from Sheffield. He’s the partner of Lynsey from Bimbo Design of Chatsworth Road and that’s how his work came to be on the cover. Matt has recently been working alongside Hendersons Relish and his latest ‘Attack of the Hendos’ collection (shown below) is newly launched - featuring his signature characters.

Chatsworth Road Festival 2013

S40 It’s Festival time again! It’s Chatsworth Road Festival time again - celebrating living and working, on and around, Chatsworth Road. It took someone visiting from outside our community to comment on Chatsworth Road’s qualities - the wonderful shops, cafes and the vibrancy of the area. It was something we should celebrate, prompting us to set up the festival, which is now in its third year. So, this year, it all kicks off on the 5 October with the Food Fair at St Thomas’, followed by a week of events to celebrate, rediscover and share what’s great about our area with friends and neighbours! The festival committee are delighted with the range of events the businesses and community groups have agreed to host - I hope you are too and can find something that appeals, whether its art, music, performance, food, shopping, eating or drinking that’s your thing! The full events guide follows, so get a pen out, circle the ones that sound good and book a place. Fingers crossed there are no mistakes! Pulling together the event list was not an easy task and thanks must go to the organising committee and all those involved, however I suspect there may be an error or two in there so please check before going along to make sure it’s at the place it says at the time it says! A theme of 2013 has been about supporting the local independent retailer, and S40 Local have been advocating a 10% local approach - spending 10% of your weekly budget at local independent shops. Many of the festival events have been organised by the local businesses so what better way to show your support then to attend an event. An event of this scale doesn’t happen without a lot of work, the festival committee have been busy preparing all year - I’ve been working alongside Deirdre Gage, Colin Harrison, Shirley Niblock, Howard Borrell, John Rhodes (Select Interiors), Teresa Lamberelli (Cafe Aroma), Sophia Ward (Harley’s), Sally-Ann Beecham (St Thomas’), Clare Gage (Ceramics) and Dom Stevens (Destination Chesterfield). We’ve had support from Lindsey from Bimbo design with posters and artwork, Jon Harris from Minuteman Press with printing, Hannah Wheeler with the layout of the guide, Bunting makers and importantly the fantastic event organisers - you can see who they are when you look through the events in the pages of the guide! The way it brings people together amazes me - groups of ladies gather to make bunting, business owners discuss plans and coordination, schools and churches think how they can get involved, kids paint and think about the area in which they live and a whole host of other stuff happens. But now it’s down to YOU - from the 5 to 13 October you get your chance to make Chatsworth Road buzz with activity and make it a festival to remember... hope to see you there, enjoy Festival week. BBB Y ou know it says a lot does bunting, it lets you know something is happening, it might cause an uplift in spirits, it’s bright (usually) and groups of people can get round a table and make it!

With Chatsworth Road Festival in its third year the committee thought it would be good to make it a bit more visible this year for people who might be passing through, so S40 put out a call to arms for bunting makers. Tracey Oldfield from the Image and Colour Emporium rose to the challenge and the Barmy Bunting Bash was born! I called into The Image and Colour Emporium in August to find a team of six hard at work cutting, pinning, coordinating, pressing and stitching. Using material donated from here and there, including some fantastic bright 70’s type material from a lady near St Thomas’, when I arrived, about 25m was already complete and there was 75m still to go. The first run had caused light hearted complaints about the pinning and the ladies (yes there were just ladies

present, apart from yours truly) were bickering and chatting. It was something they were clearly enjoying. What was apparent was there was no clear leader, they were all happy to chip in on whatever task needed them. By the time I left, the second run was almost done, 50m down and another 50m to go! It looked as though what was planned to be two days of fun, could well be cut short due to their speedy work. Why were you all doing it I asked? It was a mixture of responses, most were from of the knitting group who simply thought it would be fun to give up some time and get involved. It’s great to see things like this taking place, a group of like-minded people getting together for no other reason than to share their time whilst producing something that will contribute to a community event. Thank you to the lovely, shy, ladies who took part, though they didn’t want me to include their names. I’ll look out for their bunting in a few weeks time!

n the July edition we launched the S40 Local Writing Competition, challenging you to produce a piece of writing, maximum of 500 words about our area. The response to competitions varies enormously - and even really easy competitions that require little effort sometimes have limited response - however, this one required lots of effort and we’ve been thrilled by the response, both in the number of entries and also the quality of the writing.

Thank you to everyone who entered, the standard was exceptionally high. Judging a competition like this is also quite difficult, as preferences and opinions differ greatly, it is very Page 24 • www.s40local.co.uk

New Business

Strada Estates are new to Chesterfield, they are an Estate Agents with a fresh approach to buying and selling homes.

S

trada (Italian for Street) is a team of two Sharon Macaulay and Elizabeth McDermott who between them have over 30 years experience as estate agents.

Sharon moved from a small village near Loch Lomond to Chesterfield just four years ago to join her partner Robert. For the past few years she has been working at the corporate level in Sheffield but felt at odds with the way business was run, “it’s all about profit” Sharon comments, “we were targeted in so many ways, sales, linked business, it simply wasn’t about the customer, no time to build relationships or to offer the level of service I think the housing market needs. Buying a house is probably the largest purchase any of us will make so personally I think it’s an important one that needs to be handled differently.”

Liz has a similar background to Sharon working with the larger, corporate businesses and she too found the same issues as Sharon, “between us, we are both looking forward to offering a totally personalised service” adds Liz.

“there is a lot more buyer confidence out there right now. Sales are being secured which stimulates the whole chain, and banks have recently started to offer 95% mortgages again, so buyers can at last get their hands on funds.” Sharon Macauly of Strada Estates The office on Soresby Street is different to most estate agents I’ve seen, a huge aerial view of Chesterfield dominates one wall, the bright orange and blue colour scheme of the branding

reflected in the decor. They were in their fourth week of business when I visited and were happy to have secured a number of successful sales in that short time, some with properties that have been on with other agents for some time with no joy. “People have been delighted with responses to sales achieved, we have a relatively small selection of properties on our books today but we’re securing more each week and are confident we’ll be offering properties from across the area and to suit all requirements” says Sharon. So what is it that’s different I ask, how have you managed to sell properties in a week that other agents haven’t been able to sell for months? “It’s our business, mine and Liz’s, we need to make it work. We can’t sit back and expect customers to walk through the door, we need to find them, both sellers and buyers.” “Using social media like facebook and twitter enables us to get property details to potential clients quickly and in a way not available previously, it’s maximizing channels like this that help achieve results.” “We are truly available seven days a week too. People have already expressed their surprise, and delight when we’ve returned calls or responded to emails in the evening and at the weekend” adds Liz. “It’s about making the sale of your home as easy as it can be. We offer a modern up to

date approach to selling your property with old fashioned values at the heart - honesty, communication and integrity.” “No matter who you are – you’re important to us!” Sharon finishes. At a time when we’re told the property market is not performing well, is it a good time to open a new agency? “Absolutely” says Sharon, “there is a lot more buyer confidence out there right now. Sales are being secured which stimulates the whole chain, and banks have recently started to offer 95% mortgages again, so buyers can at last get their hands on funds. Previously, getting through the lending process was so tight that people who were previously rated well were being turned down. This can result in a massive knock to self confidence and these buyers drift away, it’s good to see they have options again and can return to the market.” If you’re looking to move home or have a property to sell, Strada are Chesterfield’s latest independent option. Sharon and Liz want to sell your home and want to sell you your next, they are looking forward to seeing how they can help. Look out for details of properties for sale with Strada in the window of Hadfield Accountants on Chatsworth Road. See the advert on the next page or to talk to Sharon or Liz call 01246 276 276.

“We were resigned to buying a kitchen from the high street when we were alerted by a friend who suggested we try David Pyatt Design instead. At our insistence, David came to visit us that same afternoon. Within two days we were presented with a kitchen design that took us totally by surprise. The even bigger surprise was the price. Now for little more than the high street price we are loving our real designer kitchen. Sue & Dave, North Wingfield.

Community News

Loundsley Green Community Centre

Update on Progress

T

wo and a half years ago, a group of parents from Loundsley Green heard that the former church where their children met for cubs and scouts was to close. The church had already moved over the road due to a dwindling congregation, the premises were operating at a loss and the fabric of the building would cost too much to repair. Rather than shrug their shoulders and find another scout group, this inspirational group of people produced a business model and three months later they had a thirty five year lease to run a community led charity. Now, not only do the cubs and scouts have a home in Loundsley Green, there are a host of clubs, societies and events taking place throughout the week. The Loundsley Green Community Trust has a group of seven trustees who oversee the community development charity (which is a limited company and has its own bank account). Through a programme of fundraising and applying for grants, the LGCT is now a sustainable organisation which has a real focus on community spirit. Managed entirely by volunteers, the aims of the LGCT are: • •

• • • •

To provide a focus for the local community To provide facilities where people can come together to take part in activities To provide opportunities for learning To provide opportunities for fun To provide opportunities for improving health and well-being To help community

groups to work together To promote successful community action To help community organisations to communicate effectively To reach out to older people, young people and those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged

The Loundsley Green Community Trust is certainly achieving these aims. I met the Chair, Simon Redding, at the Centre and he told me how the project is developing. “Support from Business in the Community gave us access to an architect and a quantity surveyor who confirmed that the building required between £100,000 and £150,000 spending on it to bring it up to a reasonable standard. We’ve successfully applied for grants and fundraising events have meant that new toilets and windows have been fitted and new facilities are available

inside the building. The kitchen will be refurbished enabling the Centre to advertise its new course - Free Intergenerational Cookery Classes.” The Centre also offers the following: • • •

• •

help to start your own business (Enterprise Coaching) a parent and toddler club on Friday mornings a social afternoon on Monday afternoons for those older members of the community who are “Young at Heart” a Friday night youth club free IT classes on Wednesday and Thursday nights

Simon explained, “the monthly community meetings attract more than twenty people from the local area who are all keen to give voluntary help. Volunteers are always welcome either for specific projects, ongoing help, organising

events or just being generally supportive.” A look at the website www. lgct.org.uk (which was built by a volunteer) gives you information about the Centre’s activities and how to volunteer. The Centre’s logo, a tree of people, was also designed by a volunteer who is a graphic designer. There is genuine community willingness evident in all the work of the Trust. As we left the Centre, volunteers were arranging the hall for the weekly Food Bank. Local churches have established these Food Banks where people and families in desperate need of food to put on the table can bring vouchers to exchange for food parcels. After saying our goodbyes, Simon rolled up his sleeves to deal with a leak in the toilets volunteering is all about being hands on!

The venture has been given an award by the Prime Minister as a model of ‘The Big Society’. People from the community saw a need and through hard work, good will and sheer enthusiasm, have done something about it. “We have yet to decide who will attend the presentation at Downing Street later in the year, it will probably be decided by a ballot!” says Simon. Whoever attends, they will be representing a truly remarkable organisation. Please mention S40 Local • Page 49

Garden Tips

Autumn

10 things to do in the garden By Colin Harrison of Transition Chesterfield

A

utumn is about to take a proper grip, although there was talk of an Indian Summer. This needs temperatures to exceed 21 Celsius following a sharp frost, so there might be some last minute sun to be enjoyed if the weather forecasters have got it right. Putting this aside the tasks in the garden revolve around preparing for the winter that will definitely be here soon!

1.

Lots of apples, pears and nuts should be ready for picking by now or will finish ripening this month – only a few varieties last on the trees into November.

2.

If you have ornamental perennials that are becoming shy of flowering, divide them now – you can move them at the same time - this also applies to rhubarb. Now is also the ideal time to plant new perennials.

3.

Keep on top of tidying jobs, including cutting down flowering perennials, but leave as many seed-heads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and some provide food for birds over winter. Give hedges a final trim before winter, and remove any annual summer bedding plants – they’ll only struggle from now.

4.

Lawns will probably still need occasional mowing; rake up any leaves from nearby trees as well. If your lawn-mower is powerful enough run it over the fallen leaves – the resultant grass/leaves mixture makes excellent compost, and the chopped up leaves will break down much faster than whole ones.

5.

Plant late winter and spring-flowering bulbs, and hardy spring bedding (wallflowers, forget-menots, winter pansies, primroses etc.) which make everyone happy when they flower and provide food for wildlife early in the year.

6.

If you want to try your hand at propogating from existing plants, now is the time to take hardwood cuttings from buddleia, elders, forsythia, willow, flowering currant, gooseberries and various currants. There are lots of web sites with guides as to how to do this, or check the library.

7.

Most root vegetables should be harvested by now, including potatoes. The only exception are parsnips, which improve in flavour if frosted.

8.

While there is still some stored warmth in the soil, move trees and shrubs, and plant new ones.

9.

Dig over heavy soils and leave them for the frost to break down, while exposing larvae and eggs of pests for the birds to eat. Green manures which will over-winter (e.g. field beans, forage pea and rye) will hold the nutrients in the soil and increase fertility when dug in in spring.

10.

Raise any planters that are in places that may freeze over winter up on blocks so they don’t freeze to the ground, which can damage them. Move any tender plants to a frost-free place. If you have an excess of something and no freezer space, Transition Chesterfield are holding a produce swap for anything you’ve either grown or made yourself (jams, chutneys etc.) at their regular Green Drinks. These are always on the first Wednesday of the month, and will be at The White Swan, St Mary’s Gate (opposite the church) for the next few months; 7:30pm on.
