Hi and welcome to the autumn edition, I've been blown away by the number of events to advertise in the lead-up to Christmas. I've included as many as space allows and am looking forward to so many. If you do one thing this month, please check the events and pop some on your calendar to ensure you don't miss them. Oh, and one other thing? Please try and purchase as many presents as possible in the run-up to Christmas over the counter, face-to-face in a small business. We've a few suggestions for you to check out in our Gift Guide, and there is also a link to the map of independent businesses. Why not make it an event? Start at your favourite independent café or restaurant for breakfast to set you up for the day. How about meeting for lunch, or starting later and finishing with an evening meal? You could combine your Christmas shopping with an event from our What's On to add a seasonal feel. Our next edition will be the last of 2026, so if you have festive news to share, please let us know. And if you're a business with products to sell, be sure to get in touch. Check out our two ticket giveaways on pages 54 and 55. I'm expecting rather a lot of entries this edition! Enjoy the autumn colours. Paul Chapman 07764 801080 paul@s40local.co.uk

Cover Artist
Garry Cooper Artist, Poet, Human Words: Simon Paterson Images: Garry Cooper
If you live around Barlow, you may well have crossed paths with Garry Cooper without realising it. Garry has lived here for around 30 years with his wife Fran, and during that time he has filled his life with art, poetry, walking, books and a wonderfully curious way of looking at the world. Garry grew up on Lancaster Road in Newbold, at a time when the countryside was only about 150 yards from his front door. Much of that landscape has since been built on, but his connection with the countryside has stayed with him throughout his life. He left school and started work at 16 at the coal board plant in Wingerworth. His working life then took him through a number of different jobs, including Robinsons, the water board and eventually education, where he worked in Personnel; an early version of HR. It was a busy job. During the busiest periods, Garry could dictate around 50 letters a day and take as many as 30 phone calls an hour. Eventually, though, his eyesight became a serious problem and he nearly lost his sight. Reading became increasingly difficult, and he retired at just 50. That was when another part of Garry’s life really began to take shape. “I was always interested in art,” he tells me. “I was always interested in different cultures.” His interest goes right back to childhood. Garry remembers watching his grandfather draw a swan when he was around six years old. “I thought, that's terrific.” That moment stayed with him. He had always done bits and pieces of drawing, without any formal tuition, throughout his working life, but with a job and children, finding the time was difficult. Retirement gave him the opportunity to take it much more seriously. Page 6
Today, his home is full of his work, with paintings and drawings seemingly everywhere. He works with pencils, pens and acrylic paint, partly because acrylic dries quickly, and his work covers a huge range of ideas and styles. One of the things that fascinates Garry is the way art can communicate without necessarily explaining everything. He has a particular interest in abstract art, symbols and the way people represent animals and the natural world. That interest has even found its way into his own work through footprints. “When I’m tracking animals, I’m looking at footprints,” he explains. “They’re not the animal. They represent the animal.” It’s a lovely way of describing his approach to art. A footprint can become a symbol, the symbol can become an idea, and before you know it, you’re looking at something completely different. Garry also likes what he describes as a naive style of art, because it gives him the freedom to experiment and combine different ideas. That sense of curiosity carries over into his writing. Garry has also done lots of creative writing throughout his life, but he really started writing poetry after retiring. His poems can be thoughtful, observational and, importantly, funny. He enjoys playing with words and structure, and believes poetry shouldn’t become too precious. His influences include Shakespeare, classic literature and history. The first book he remembers reading was *Treasure Island*, followed by *The Pickwick Papers*, and he still enjoys historical fiction. He also has a wonderfully practical view of poetry. For Garry, there needs to be something
www.chesterfieldlocal.com
behind the words. An idea, a feeling or simply a good laugh. That combination of art, words and curiosity can be seen in Unfamiliar Mindscapes, a selection from his vast store of poems. The title came from an older publication called Familiar Landscapes, a collection of his prose and drawings, which was discovered by his friend Ingo. The new title stuck. And perhaps it sums Garry up rather well. He has spent much of his life looking at familiar things and finding something unfamiliar within them. His connection with the countryside is a big part of that. Together with his beloved dog, a collie, he has walked enormous distances over the years, with one estimate putting the total at around 45,000 miles. Almost all of his drawings feature a man accompanied by a dog. These days walking is more difficult, but the landscapes, paths and places around Chesterfield and Barlow remain a huge source of inspiration. Garry has two daughters and several grandchildren. He speaks with enormous pride about his family. One of his daughters has built a career around improving accessibility for disabled people.
Hill When I was a young man, the work-world was grey I squandered my youth, for I laboured each day Of work there was plenty, and I had my fill But happiness dwelt with a dog on a hill Here’s my middle years, and there’s still no respite The wolves of the city, they snarl and they bite They hunt for my mind, and they feast on the kill Whilst happiness lies with a dog on a hill Now I am old, and my labours are done Some have learned many things, I have learned one To walk in the heather, to follow the rill Where happiness lies with a dog on a hill Lord of all wild things, listen, I pray Let my children learn to spend each precious day Where everything’s quiet, where everything’s still Where happiness lies with a dog on a hill
It is clear that family, place, nature, art, literature and humour have all played their part in shaping Garry’s work. And now, at 85, he is still drawing, painting, writing and looking at the world slightly differently to the rest of us. Which, when you think about it, is probably exactly what an artist should do. A big thanks to Garry’s friend, Ingo, for championing Garry and encouraging him to share his talents with the world. Garry’s book Unfamiliar Mindscapes is available from him directly on: 0114 2891288 Priced at £5 All proceeds go to local charities.

Last edition I included a page with a QR code taking you to the map of small independent businesses in our town. As Christmas approaches I make no apology for including the link again. Businesses are gearing up to welcome you into their shops, pubs, cafes, salons etc and there are so many activities taking place in the town centre. Santa has a Grotto in the market, the Tipi is coming again - a place for drinks around a log fire, there is a Christmas Market, the annual light switch on and check out the events at the Crooked Spire, the candlelit events sound great. Events are listed in our 'What's On', so many I've to given them additional space take a read and put them on your calendar. Again thanks to Matt from Defeye Creative, Laura Jo from Adorn Jewellers, Gary from The Little Ark, Lisa and John from Shop Indie, and not forgetting myself and Simon from S40 and S41 Local for the work to get this map updated and reprinted. There are well over a hundred businesses listed, take a look by scanning the QR code opposite where you can download a handy copy of the map. We also have a number of great independent businesses along Chatsworth Road and Sheffield Road, which we hope to focus on in the new year. And if QR codes and website aren't your thing we've had a couple of large maps printed and displayed inside the Market Hall. So please familiarise yourself with the physical businesses and services available to you and do all you can to support them everyday and this Christmas. Film
Eddie Waller
Not such a bad apple!
Words: Paul Chapman Images: Paramount Pictures & Eddie Waller
On a Monday afternoon I spent two hours of my working day with Saoirse Ronan and, local lad - Eddie Waller, not in the flesh but watching ‘Bad Apples’, Jonatan Etzler’s dark comedy thriller that looks at what can go wrong with the teacher student relationship. Eddie Waller is a local lad who, lives in Brampton, attends Brookfield Community School and has secured an impressive role on the big screen and will shortly be appearing in the BBC TV series Sherwood, when it returns later this year. At one point in the film Saoirse’s character, Maria, says of Pauline, one of her students, ‘Let her sing, she might be the next Meryl Streep or Angelina Jolie’, this seemed fitting as I sit with Eddie and Mum, Amy, at Board & Bean to find out more. Although, after watching the film, I was a little concerned Eddie might throw my iPad across the room and start swearing at me! I couldn’t have been more wrong. Is this your first big screen movie and how did you land the role working alongside such a renowned actor as Saoirse? “I auditioned at a drama school and didn’t know it was connected to an agency so was surprised when they called and asked me to send a self-tape, a prerecorded audition I send in. “There were six auditions, three tapes and three in person. I met Saoirse at the last in person audition and by this time it was down to me and one other lad. After the audition we tried not to think about it and to assume it wouldn’t happen,” says Eddie. “Then, I was getting ready for football the Wednesday before Christmas and I got the call saying I’d been cast as Danny. It was a real shock, to be selected from Page 16
thousands that applied, it felt a bit weird.” The filming took six weeks down in Bristol, with Mum or Dad, Eddie was out of school for four weeks of this and explains how he focused on his character Danny. “Danny is an angry kid, but I tried to create a back story to explain his anger, an anxiety that resulted in his decisions rather than just being angry.” In the film Danny smashes quite a lot of things up, “I’m not like that, it was fun but switching in and out or character is hard, especially when you’re playing someone you’re not familiar with but it helped being really well supported by an acting coach during filming.” I’m no film critic but I think Eddie did an excellent job, his character Danny is believable and complex, the character walks a thin line between, an angry, scary teenager and someone who is vulnerable and likeable. Working alongside Saoirse Ronan who is a Golden Globe winning and four times Oscar nominated actor for films like Atonement, The Lovely Bones, Lady Bird and Little Women and one I didn’t know, the ‘Psycho Killer’ video for Talking Heads, it must be a little daunting? “Saoirse attended the last audition, so I had met her before filming started, she was amazing to work with and yes it was a bit strange at first, but I soon found it easy, just like working with any actor really.” So how did you catch up on missing your schoolwork? “I had a tutor who was also my chaperone whilst on set so I was kept up to speed with my education, school have also been really supportive through this, so I must say thanks to them.

Film “I also play guitar and sing backing vocals in a local band, Strophic, we’re quite new but I love being part of this and being on stage,” adds Eddie. I asked what inspires Eddie and if there was a film he’d recommend we all watch? “Mega Mind, is my favourite film, it’s an animated comedy with Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt, I love comedy, it’s a genre I love. “Away from this it’s TV shows that I go to, things like The Inbetweeners, Breaking Bad, The Peep Show,” says Eddie. It’s amazing to see Eddie secure such a high-profile role and testament to what a great actor he is, even at such a young age. How do your friends react? “They’ve been really good, a bunch of family and friends went to Cineworld to see the film together and they really enjoyed it,” says Eddie. I think my wife and daughter were at this same screening, they were clapping and cheered for Eddie as the credits rolled. Eddie’s also had three people approach him after recognising him as ‘the kid from the movie’. Fame and fortune await, and we couldn’t be prouder. “I think they were a bit surprised when they saw the film, I don’t think they realised I was co-starring alongside a Hollywood actor, it’s been really hard not letting anyone know until the trailer was released.” Eddie was just 13(?), in year eight when filming took place in March 2024, and now in year 11 and looking for his next role whilst preparing for exams and settling into A levels next year. I asked about his first stage role, Eddie laughs, “I started out in the ‘Enormous Turnip’ on stage at Westfield School, aged four.” “I joined Inspirations Theatre Company and from age six performed in shows including The Sound of Music, Moana, Aladdin and Chicago, I also won the award for best youth musical for 13: The Musical whilst with Inspirations Theatre Company.
Amy commented, “Eddie has always kept his feet on the ground, he enjoys what he does and as a family we’ve always been supportive of what he’s done.” Away from acting Eddie enjoys his football, playing with Strophic and living life in Chesterfield. Unfortunately, by the time you read this is, Bad Apples will probably have completed its run at the cinema and you’ll have to wait until it’s released on a streaming channel, probably Paramount as it’s a Paramount film. In the meantime, you’ll be able to see Eddie on TV in series three of the BAFTA award winning show, Sherwood, due for release on the BBC before the end of the year. It’s fantastic to see local talent on stage and screen, and I wish Eddie all the best of luck with his future career and hope to sit with him again in a few years, perhaps after his first screen award? Make sure you seek out the film and watch Sherwood… and most importantly spread the news of this talented new actor that you’re proud to say, lives round the corner in Chesterfield. Thanks to Eddie and Amy for their time.
“I’ve been in all the school plays at Brookfield, and I love to be on stage.” I asked if he was hardwired to act? “Eddie has always been a little eccentric,” says Mum Amy. “He has an amazing level of quiet confidence.” Page 18

Words: Paul Chapman Images: iDeal Beds
iDeal Beds share space with iDeal Flooring at Walton Fields Road, just off Chatsworth Road, just behind Crown Decorating Centre, and if you’re looking for a complete bed or just a base or mattress, they are ideally set up for you to call in and try them out.
and see for yourself, they offer great storage and are our best seller.
I called in to see Kevin Howarth, owner of iDeal Flooring & Beds, about his bed range. “People have to come and try our beds,” says Kevin, “why would you buy a mattress without testing it first, we spend about 26 years asleep on average and that doesn’t include the time we spend trying to get to sleep. Surely you need to make sure you’ll be comfortable!”
iDeal Beds have a large range of solid wood frames, that are available in natural timber finishes or painted with one of 50 Farrow & Ball colours, and all their beds and mattresses are UK made. Kev's team will deliver them to you for free, and for £50 they can be assembled taking away any effort on your part, you simply have to lay down once the job is done.
It does seem strange that we’d even think about going online to make sure an important purchase, plus iDeal Beds are local and 100% independent. iDeal Beds has a range of styles and there is something to suit everyone, they have bundles that include a base, a mattress and headboard, you can pick up a solid wood frame if you prefer plus ottoman bases with hydraulics to make lifting bases easy. “Our ottomans are a great product,” says Kev, “the base is solid, not slats and they have quality hydraulics making them so easy to lift, even when fully made up with duvets. Come in
Page 22
“Whilst you’re here you can test the mattresses of choice and make sure it’s the right combination for your needs - not something you can do online.”
“We have a great range on display in our showroom, just off Chatsworth Road and our suppliers are all in the UK so we can have our divans delivered within a week and we should be able to supply any of our beds or mattresses before Christmas,” says Kev, “a nice comfy present for yourself perhaps?” In the rare event that there is nothing that takes your fancy iDeal Beds can make bespoke beds, again call in for details. iDeal Beds have been supplying beds for almost a year now and are happy with the range of quality products they can supply. Their website has recently been updated and is a great place to start.

“We keep our prices competitive and tend to be cheaper than the national chains on like for like Quality. Most customers buy once they’ve been and call in again later for Flooring. "If you want a new bedroom carpet and bed we can provide the whole package,” says Kev. iDeal Beds can supply orthopaedic or waterproof beds and can cater for nursing and care Homes. Call in and see Kev, you’ll find quality products and be surprised by what they can offer. And don’t forget to tell them S40 Local sent you. 13 Bends Design Celebrates Ten Years of Creativity Words: Paul Chapman Image: Helen Rowan Photography
I first met Kelly Sheldon (or Kelly Bond as she was then) when I was looking for prices to print a local magazine I had an idea about creating. Kelly was working for a graphic design business on Chatsworth Road, and neither of us could have known where that first conversation would lead. A few years later, Kelly ended up working with me on the magazine before eventually going it alone with her own business, 13 Bends Design. Today, it’s lovely to share the same creative space in town. Creativity has always been a big part of Kelly’s life. “At the age of 16 I started an apprenticeship with Richard Duszczak’s Cartoon Studio based on Saltergate,” she tells me. “Richard employed me on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) back in the nineties and I trained to be an editorial cartoonist.” That first job involved producing cartoons for print, greetings cards, magazines and books, something she has continued throughout her career. You’ll probably recognise her work, as Kelly produces the cartoons for each edition of S40. Kelly worked for local design businesses, and even with me at S40 Local, before deciding to establish her own design and illustration business. As 13 Bends Design celebrates ten years in business, Kelly is pleased to reach this milestone in such a competitive field. 13 Bends Design creates graphic design, logos and brand identity, bespoke illustrations and, more recently, visual note art. Visual Note Taking is an interesting way of creatively capturing meetings, events, data and discussions, helping businesses and organisations record ideas and feedback in a way that’s more engaging and memorable than pages of written notes. Kelly explains that visual notes often give a voice to people who feel they aren’t listened to. Story gathering and listening are her favourite elements of this work. She has created visual notes for community groups, charities, conferences, team-building days, schools, the NHS and, recently, a large charity ball in Manchester. Page 26
“I often feel like I have my fingers in too many pies,” Kelly laughs. “But I enjoy it and feel like I’d get bored if I did just one thing.” There’s another important part of Kelly’s story. She is hard of hearing and sight impaired, living with Usher Syndrome, a rare genetic condition which causes hearing loss, progressive vision loss and can also affect her balance. There is currently no cure, and Kelly has had to continually adapt as the condition progresses. Despite this, creativity, work and family life remain a huge part of who she is. Kelly hopes that being more visible and talking about Usher Syndrome will raise awareness. Away from 13 Bends, many local people will know Kelly and husband Chris as The Shambles, with Kelly on vocals and Chris leading on guitar. The couple live in Brampton with their two children and are very much part of the local community. Around here, there’s a good chance you know someone who knows one of them! If you follow her social media, you may have seen the cartoons she recently produced for the Cure Usher Ball at The Manchester Deansgate Hotel. Kelly was approached by actor Mark Jordon to get involved, and the resulting artworks were auctioned at the event, raising an impressive £1,500 towards the charity’s fundraising efforts. Back at home, Kelly continues to work with local businesses, including Brampton Brewery, Junction Bar, Ingmans and Junction Arts, producing artwork, design and branding. And then there’s the magazine that started our working relationship all those years ago. It’s a funny old thing when you look back. What began with me asking a graphic designer for printing prices has turned into years of working together, countless cartoons and, eventually, sharing a creative workspace in town. Ten years of 13 Bends Design is certainly something worth celebrating, and if you’re looking for a real person with real creative ideas rather than another AI-generated image that looks suspiciously like everything else on the internet, perhaps it’s time to give Kelly a call. www.13bendsdesign.co.uk 07533 359219

Sheldon Guitar Repairs
Last year Chris moved to a studio space at 37 Station Road in town and now shares his workshop space with Kelly who has the adjacent office space… the old shed has since made an excellent utility room!
Words: Paul Chapman Image: Emma Croman
Chris is half of The Shambles, “shambles by name, shambles by nature” he adds, named after the historic alleyways in town.
100% Luthier & 50% 'Shambles'
Chris Sheldon is a luthier, he makes and repairs string instruments, he’s also married to Kelly Sheldon and is one of my neighbours at 37 Station Road so it seemed only right we should have a chat about what he does as I’d just spoken to Kelly. “It all started at school for me,” says Chris. “I did two weeks work experience with Neil Bagshaw who worked with Hudsons music. “He also ran a violin making course at Sheffield, I was inspired and went along to this. I played locally in bands as well and was starting to think that life as a rock star wasn’t going to happen so turned my focus to making and repairing stringed instruments, it felt like a safer option.” I’d kept in touch with Neil, and he directed me to the Classical Guitar Building and Violin Repair course at Leeds College of Music. This was a perfect fit, a two year City & Guilds type course and 17-year-old me loved it.” The course incorporated playing, making and business studies and was located beneath the Student Union at Leeds, “we were operating machinery all day so unfortunately were never able to enjoy our location,” laughs Chris. Chris came back to Chesterfield and started work at Real Time Music when it was on Newbold Road, it was Kev Walters, a mate of Chris’s who pointed this role out and he ended up working with them for 15 years. “Real Time has shops in Chesterfield, Matlock and Sheffield but when they decided to make some changes, I took the opportunity to step away and went self-employed. Seems crazy that this was 15 years ago.” “I set up a workshop in my back garden in Brampton and enjoyed life close to home as the kids were born and grew up.” Page 28
Chris was full of stories of people he’s got to know locally, Ashley Hutchings from Fairport Convention, Judy and Blair Dunlop (folk singers), Marco Pirroni who has worked with Adam Ant, Sinéad O'Connor, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Paul Hopkinson from Chesterfield’s, Foundry Studios, Pete Dodd from The Thompson Twins, Garry Cobain from The Future Sounds of London , Russell Dennett, one of the longest serving members of The Human League… and Bernie Clifton, all these well-known musicians living in and around Chesterfield. “Garry from Future Sounds came in recently and I was impressed that I had his vinyl in my collection,” says Chris. “Pete Dodd from the Thompson Twins is a left-handed player like me.” Chris waves a hand at me, “I was righthanded until I lost the tip of a finger in some woodworking machinery and had to learn to play left handed!” Chris clearly loves what he does. He explains a recent repair that came in, it really needed a thorough overhaul, but Chris had to keep repairs to an absolute minimum as the owner just loved the way it sounded. Chris is also very creative; he can make a guitar out of more or less anything! He has made several unusual instruments and loves to get his hands on an old guitar box or oil tin. If this interests you, he has started running set up and guitar/ukelele building courses. I love the way Chris and Kelly add to the creative toolbag down at 37 Station Road and if your old guitar could do with some TLC or just new strings give Chris a call and if you need lessons, again give Chris a call as he offers guitar lessons as well.… oh and don’t forget to keep a watch out for Shambles gigs locally. Community What's On
Westfield Infant School words: Simon Paterson & Jo Nash Images: Westfield Infant School
will be thinking about belonging in their families, school and wider community, and how they can help others feel that they belong too.” Each class will be looking at a different type of belonging, from their class and families to their wider community and the world around them. The school’s youngest children will also perform a simple harvest play based on *The Lonely Scarecrow* by Tim Preston, a story which explores friendship and how, through kindness, we can make sure everyone feels included and valued. “These children will only have been in school for a few weeks and we are already incredibly proud of them,” Jo added. As part of the Harvest Festival, Westfield will once again be collecting donations of food and toiletries for Pathways of Chesterfield, a local charity supporting people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire and Bolsover. “Pathways provides practical support, housing advice and a safe place for people experiencing housing difficulties, with the aim of ensuring everyone has somewhere to call home,” said Jo.
There are some things about having children at school that you know you’ll remember for years to come, and Harvest Festival at Westfield Infant School is definitely one of them. I remember the Harvest Festival from when Florie was at Westfield. It’s such an important part of the children’s journey at the school. The fact that it supports Pathways, a local homeless charity, while also teaching children about kindness, community and helping others, is incredible. This year’s Harvest Assembly has a particularly lovely theme: belonging. Jo Nash, one of Westfield’s teachers (and Florie’s hero), explained that the school is currently working towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Silver Award, with the children exploring what it means to belong, why this is important for our wellbeing, and how everyone has the right to feel safe, valued and included. “The assembly will be performed by our Key Stage 1 children and shared with their parents,” said Jo. “Throughout the assembly, the children Page 36
“We collect each year for this charity and our generous community always amaze us with their donations.” The children have also been making thoughtful connections between Harvest, sharing what we have with others and the importance of helping people feel that they belong within their community. “It’s been lovely hearing their thoughts and seeing them develop an understanding of how small acts of kindness can make a real difference,” said Jo. Florie has moved on now, but I still have very fond memories of her time there. Harvest Festival might be about celebrating the food and produce we have, but at Westfield it also becomes a lesson in empathy, kindness and community. And if you can teach children from such a young age that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued and that they belong, while encouraging them to think about those who may be struggling in their own community, that’s a pretty important lesson to take with them through life.

Home Start High Peak Volunteers Please Step Forward Words & Images: Home Start
Home Start High Peak is celebrating some fantastic news, they have secured funding from the National Lottery and now it's joined by BBC Children in Need to help them develop support for families across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. This funding is an important step forward for Home-Start High Peak as they continue to grow their service in the area and reach more families who may benefit from a little extra support. Home Start supports families who are facing challenges in their lives. Sometimes having someone to listen, share experiences, offer encouragement and provide practical support can make a real difference to family life. Support is built around the belief that families don't need to face difficult times alone. An important part of the service offered is down to their volunteers and Home Start is looking for local people who would like to become Family Support Volunteers. You don't need to be a parenting expert or have professional qualifications. What matters is having time, patience, a willingness to listen and an understanding that every family is different. Our volunteers offer regular support to families in their own homes and communities, helping parents to build confidence, reduce isolation and recognise their own strengths.
Could you make a difference to a local family? Home Start are keen to hear from people in Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire who would like to use their time and life experience to support local families 2 to 3 hours per week. Whether you have parenting experience, have supported others in your community, or simply feel you have something to offer, please get in touch. Anthea Murfin CEO says, “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured funding, it will make a real difference to families across Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. We can continue to grow our support, reach more families who need us and, importantly, give local people the opportunity to become family support volunteers. If you would like to find out more about becoming a Home-Start High Peak Family Support Volunteer, please get in touch. M: 07971 957 668 www.homestarthighpeak.org.uk

It All Begins With Kindness
Bird Watchers Take Flight
Press Release
Press Release
Members of Chesterfield’s RSPB group hope to build on the booming interest in bird watching through their autumn programme of talks and walks. Apps such as bird call identifier Merlin and social media platforms including TikTok are fostering a surge of interest in wildlife and especially birds, with an encouraging proportion of young people, particularly, discovering the delights of nature.
What happens if people are asked to leave a message of kindness for a complete stranger? The response has overwhelmed Sheffield born artist Si Homfray since he returned to Sheffield - Si is a previous S40 Local cover artist. The ‘It All Begins With Kindness…’ project has seen visitors to his new Park Designs gallery covering feather-shaped postcards with words of encouragement, friendship, tolerance and simple human decency. Some just three words: “You are enough.” Others, “Go easy on yourself, life is hard!” “There’s a friend for everyone.” “Remember to assume the best in others and smile.” For Si, the response to ‘It All Begins With Kindness…” has also provided an unexpectedly emotional welcome home. “I think we are constantly bombarded with reasons to believe people are divided or angry with each other. This was about turning that on its head and asking what happens when you simply give somebody a blank piece of card and an opportunity to say something kind.” Visitors are invited to get involved and complete a free feather-shaped postcard which is added to the evolving installation, turning hundreds of individual thoughts into a collective piece of art. Raising money for Roundabout, the Sheffield charity supporting young people experiencing homelessness. Original artworks are available to buy during the exhibition, with proceeds helping the charity. Visit Si's new home at 62 Brown Street, Sheffield, before 30 Nov 2026. www.parkdesigns.co.uk

Jack Baddams, from Derbyshire, who spoke to the group earlier this year about his work with the BBC’s popular Springwatch tv series, has 300,000 followers on social media and one of his videos, on ringing wild birds, has been viewed 7.5m times. Wendy Dyson, leader of Chesterfield RSPB, said: “It’s wonderful to see this growing interest in bird watching and our autumn programme provides plenty of opportunities to learn more about bird life in Derbyshire and further afield. We have excellent speakers lined up as well as guided walks, led by members with expert knowledge of the birds in the areas we’ll be visiting.” On 5 October, Steve Davies will be speaking on the Yorkshire Hobby Study. On 2 November, Anna-Louise Pickering, wildlife writer, photographer and conservationist and daughter of the celebrated Derbyshire wildlife artist Pollyanna Pickering, is among the speakers lined up, with a talk, Wonderful World. Decembers meeting is yet to be arranged so see the website for details. All meetings are held at the St Thomas’ Centre, Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield on the first Monday of the month, at 7.15pm. Admission is £5 for members, £6 for nonmembers, including refreshments served in the interval. The guided walks programme includes Wednesday morning and Saturday field trips, with destinations including the Eastern Moors above Chesterfield, Harthill Reservoir and Ogston Reservoir. If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind. Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light. Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seed-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seed-heads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter. Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost. Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again. If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag. If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch. Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more.
