Intro

Hi Welcome to our Summer edition.

Issue 170 Summer 2026

You might have noticed that it’s been extremely dry and pretty hot! Great for off-road cycling, the trails are dusty and fabulous to ride, not so great if you’re a gardener, farmer or fire-fighter, or you struggle in the heat, you’re probably praying for some rain.

Next edition: Autumn 2026

In this edition we have a feature about a mountain bike ride in the Peak District where a friend Dave required urgent medical assistance from the Air Ambulance, and a ride we’re doing to support the charity that came to his assistance. If you have a spare fiver or more, we'd really appreciate your support.

It's holiday season and I'm sure many of you are planning trips, either day adventures or longer trips abroad. We had an early holiday this year as we are at the A levels and Uni stage. We enjoyed a fabulous break in Annecy, France on the edge of the Alps. It's taken me far too long to make this trip by road and we had a truly wonderful time. The pace of life is so different, the roads so quiet and, although the population is roughly the same as the UK, it's 2.3 times the size so there is simply more space for everyone. I decided I need to bring some of that slower pace back here, so more cycling to the studio and sitting in the hammock in the garden!

If you would like to advertise, list a classified item, tell us about your local event, contribute in any way or simply want to get in touch please see below.

This month’s cover is a photo I took recently whilst out on a bike ride. This was taken on my phone, and apart from adjusting the exposure slightly it’s exactly as I saw it, a slightly apocalyptic sun setting over the Chatsworth valley from Beeley Moor.

TO ADVERTISE

Lastly, I'd like to express my thanks to Klara de Rooji who has been with us for a week on work experience. Her first contribution on summer reading is included in this edition, she also helped with various pieces, and we have an article banked for a future edition. Thanks Klara. Enjoy. H&H@Koo: In Safe Hands Words: Paul Chapman Images: H&H@Koo

"...we've been super busy since we opened the doors. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come." John - H&H@Koo

Page 6

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

When a well-loved local business changes hands, there's always a little uncertainty. Will it keep its character? Will the menu change much? Thankfully, in the case of H&H@Koo on Chatsworth Road, the signs are very promising. In July, John Makin became the new owner of one of Chesterfield's favourite coffee shops and cafés, Koo. John is a board member at The Sitwell Arms, has been in hospitality for years, and also runs Brampton Laundry with Cheryl who is a familiar face to many locally. Cheryl previously managed The Real Ale Corner and Barlow Tap House, and has stepped up to run H&H@Koo so we can expect great things.

refreshed with new colours and signage, and inside there was a steady stream of customers despite a rather grey Monday. "We weren't quite sure what to expect," says John, "but we've been super busy since we opened the doors. Hopefully that's a sign of things to come." The menu has something for everyone, with breakfast served until 2pm, alongside paninis, jacket potatoes, signature salads, freshly baked pastries and an ever-changing selection of artisan cakes that's well worth leaving room for. Naturally, there's plenty of great coffee and other drinks to enjoy alongside your meal, scan the QR code for the new menu.

Let's clear up the mystery behind the name. The 'H&H' stands for Honey and Heidi, John's much-loved dogs. In fact, H&H@Koo is proudly dog-friendly, so your four-legged companions are more than welcome too… there are even artisan dog treats from Marge & Mable on hand for the particularly well-behaved visitors.

There's more to come too, Friday and Saturday evenings will see H&H @Koo opening for special events, including bottomless brunches, small plates and live music. If you're looking for somewhere to celebrate a special occasion, the venue will also be available for private evening hire.

John's career has included time with Patisserie Valerie and Thorntons, so looking after customers comes naturally. The take over happened rather quickly, "Cheryl went away on holiday," laughs John, "and when she came back there was already a handover plan for Catrina in place at the laundry and before she knew it, she was back in hospitality!"

Opening hours have been updated slightly, with the café now welcoming customers from 8am until 3pm. Don't forget to pick up a loyalty card while you're there!

For Cheryl, it couldn't have been a better fit. "I've managed The Tap House and The Real Ale Corner in previous business ventures, so walking through the doors of H&H@Koo felt a bit like coming home," she says. "We're all so excited to be taking on such a well-known business on Chatsworth Road." John is equally enthusiastic about the future. "We're here to build the reputation of H&H@ Koo," he explains. "We're in this for the long run. It's an investment in our future, but more importantly, we're here to stay." That commitment shows in the menu too. They've introduced an entirely new selection featuring artisan breads, pastries and cakes, locally roasted coffee from Ardens Coffee, free-range eggs from Adam's Happy Hens and a growing list of independent local suppliers. "We're keen to build relationships with small local businesses and are always looking for new products that fit our offer," says John.

I didn't spend long with John and Cheryl, but one thing became obvious very quickly, they're genuinely enjoying this new adventure. Of course, there were a few day-one gremlins to iron out, but there was plenty of laughter behind the counter and an obvious passion for what they're doing. Their focus is simple: get to know their customers, serve fantastic artisan food and create somewhere people want to return to time and again. Judging by the number of clean plates heading back into the kitchen on day one, they're already off to a great start. With exciting events already being planned and plenty more ideas waiting in the wings, H&H @ Koo looks to have a bright future ahead. If you haven't visited for a while, now's the perfect time to pop in, say hello to the team, and don't forget to tell them you saw them in S40 Local.

I popped in just over a day after they'd collected the keys. Already the outside had been Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

OTI Interiors

Showroom Now Open on Knifesmithgate Text: Paul Chapman Images: OTI Interiors

"We create a solution that works for you and your family. Designs built around your lifestyle and how you use the space." Gavin, OTI Interiors

OTI Interiors is a bespoke cabinetry company founded in 2022, specialising in beautifully crafted kitchens, furniture and interior spaces. The business recently opened its showroom on Knifesmithgate, offering clients the opportunity to experience its design-led approach and craftsmanship first-hand. Founded by Gavin and Hannah Grainger, OTI Interiors grew from a passion for exceptional design and a desire to create truly bespoke interiors. "Whilst renovating our own hospitality venues, we were constantly asked who had designed the interiors," explains Gavin. "Those conversations made us realise there was a real appetite for thoughtfully designed, handcrafted cabinetry. Creating spaces that not only look beautiful but function perfectly has always been something I'm passionate about." Having known Gavin since his days working in bars on Chatsworth Road, I've always admired his determination and eye for detail. What many people don't realise is that he was responsible for designing the interiors of Bottle & Thyme, transforming the former bank building on Knifesmithgate, as well as leading the design of Elder. Those projects showcased not only his design ability but also his understanding of how thoughtfully designed spaces can completely transform the way people experience them.

Throughout every project, Gavin remains closely involved, ensuring each design reflects the company's commitment to craftsmanship, quality and exceptional customer experience. That dedication to detail has helped OTI Interiors quickly establish a reputation for creating bespoke interiors that combine timeless design with meticulous workmanship. What has been particularly impressive is the pace at which OTI Interiors has established itself. Operating from its dedicated workshop and spray facility in Hasland, the company has invested in professional equipment, processes Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

Rewilding the Land, Restoring the Soul Words: Paul Chapman Images: Helen Rowan Photography / Wild & Other

Looking for a place for friends and family to stay when they visit? The lovely holiday cottages from Wild & Other are the perfect place for this but this project is so much more than that. Set at Cow Close Farm in Cutthorpe, it's a family-run project combining hospitality with an ambitious vision for rewilding. I caught up with Hannah and Matt to learn more about the venture and why slowing down matters more than ever. Tell us about Wild & Other, what is it all about? "Wild & Other is a family-run rewilding project that brings together beautiful places to stay with a genuine commitment to nature. We wanted to create somewhere that allows wildlife to thrive while giving people the opportunity to reconnect with the countryside. "Our holiday cottages are part of that vision, but they're only one piece of the story. Alongside restoring historic farm buildings, we're working to restore the surrounding landscape through habitat creation, biodiversity projects and long-term rewilding. Everything we do is driven by the belief that the places we care for today should be richer and healthier for future generations." Where did the idea first come from? "Our founders, Steve (far left) and Emily (right), had spent years enjoying nature and became increasingly concerned about the effects of climate change. They wanted to create something that would actively protect and celebrate the natural environment while helping others experience its restorative qualities. "At the same time, Matt (centre pic) and his wife Michelle were exploring the wellbeing benefits of spending time outdoors. Michelle had recently qualified as a therapist, and together they wanted to create somewhere where nature itself could become part of people's healing and relaxation." The remarkable thing was that Steve and Matt had been considering almost identical ideas. Once they started talking, they realised that by combining their skills and experience they could create something far more ambitious. Wild & Other was born. "We became the custodians of Cow Close Farm in April 2023, and it immediately felt like the perfect place to bring our vision to life. The previous owners had cared for the farm

beautifully and were pleased to know that we'd continue preserving both the historic buildings and the landscape around them. "Our renovations respect the character of the original farm while creating peaceful, welcoming spaces where guests could truly relax. Oak Cottage and Hickory Cottage welcomed their first visitors in November 2023, with the Farmhouse in October 2024." So what is rewilding? "It's about giving nature the opportunity to recover," says Matt. "In November 2024 we created new ponds as part of a wider habitat enhancement programme, alongside tree planting, land management and ongoing conservation work. "Rewilding isn't something you achieve overnight though," Matt laughs. "It takes patience and a willingness to think in decades rather than months. "One of the most rewarding aspects has been seeing wildlife gradually return. We've recorded new bird species, watched wildflowers appear where they hadn't grown before and captured increasing amounts of activity on our wildlife cameras. Every small change tells us we're moving in the right direction." Does this include the new Steers you've bought back onto the land? "Large grazing animals play an incredibly important role in shaping healthy

landscapes. Their grazing patterns create a rich mix of grasses, wildflowers and habitats that support insects, birds and countless other species. "They're also part of our approach to ethical food production. We believe it's possible to produce meat on a smaller, more considered scale that respects both the animals and the land they graze." What do you hope visitors take away after a stay at Cow Close Farm? "More than anything, we hope people slow down. Modern life is incredibly busy, and nature has an amazing ability to help us pause, breathe and reconnect with what's really important." Finally, what does the future hold for Wild & Other? "We're still only at the beginning of our journey but we'll continue restoring habitats, encouraging biodiversity and developing places where people can experience the countryside in a more meaningful way. "For us, Wild & Other has always been about thoughtful hospitality, a love of nature and the simple belief that slowing down helps us reconnect with what matters most." Check out Wild & Other at the website below and a huge thanks to the team for introducing us to their new space. www.wildandother.com

Saving Lives

on a cycling challenge ride on 4 October 2026 to cover the £3,000 cost of Dave’s rescue.

When things turn to disaster: Supporting the Air Ambulance Service Words: Paul Chapman

Many of you will know my cycling buddy Dave Towndrow. He lives in Walton, worked in Zebra clothing for many years, his kids who went to Brookfield and he even featured on the cover of one of the very first Peak District mountain bike (MTB) route books. He’s a keen local cyclist who enjoys social rides with his mates, and it’s exactly this that he was enjoying when things went badly wrong on Sunday 19 April. The group had been out for a while, had enjoyed breakfast at Hassop Station (see Dave smiling opposite) and was heading from Longstone Edge down the track into Calver. Dave loves this descent and often leads the way, as he did this day. Unbeknown to him, an offroad motorcyclist was heading up this green lane towards him. As Dave rounded a bend, they collided head-on, nobody was at fault, just a terrible freak accident. Dave was flung across the trail, landed badly and had clearly sustained serious injuries and was struggling to breathe. Thankfully, his friends acted quickly and called 999, leading to the rapid response of the Air Ambulance Service. Helicopter G-DRLA was thankfully rapidly dispatched from Widmerpool to Calver, covering 42 miles in just 15 minutes at speeds of up to 171mph. The incredible medical team worked on Dave at the scene for 45 minutes, before the helicopter flew him to the Northern General Hospital, an incredibly quick six-minute journey. The estimated cost of this lifesaving flight and treatment is around £3,000, a stark reminder about how vital these services are, but also about how important it is that the charities gain the funds to support them.

Organised by Matt Johnson, the route will roughly follow the same journey the helicopter made that day from Nottingham City Airport to the site of Dave’s accident, and onwards to the Northern General Hospital. This 80-mile route is going to take significantly longer than the helicopter’s 21-minute mission, with over 4,000ft of climbing, but it’s nothing compared to what Dave and his family have been through. Dave suffered serious injuries including a shattered kneecap, broken pelvis, three broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken shoulder blade, and even a badly damaged big toe — “like a tulip” as he would say himself! Dave is making a steady recovery, it will be some time before he’s back on his bike and his hopes of joining us for a part of the ride is now looking unlikely due to complications with his hip, but we’re looking forward to him getting out with us again soon. We would be incredibly grateful for any donations, however small, to help us reach the target, and to support the Air Ambulance crews who provide critical, lifesaving care when every second counts. About the Air Ambulance Service: Our local Air Ambulance operate for Warwickshire & Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland as well as the national paediatric and neonatal transfer service, the National Children’s Air Ambulance, which covers the whole of the UK. The Air Ambulance Service does not receive funding from the government and relies entirely on voluntary donations and support from our communities and business. Any donation you can make will help keep them flying. We wish him best of luck with his recovery and hope to see him again out on the trails soon. The first breakfast is on me buddy. Please scan the QR code below or opposite to donate.

Dave and his mates can't express how thankful we all are to the Air Ambulance Service and are setting out to show our appreciation by taking Page 18

Books

Klara's favourite book 'Bridge of Clay' by Markus Zusak

Summer Reading A summer challenge Words: Klara de Rooij

During the Great Pandemic of 2020, I found the one hobby that would define me – reading. If I remember correctly, it was during Lent of 2020 that really sparked my hyper-interest. As a Lenten challenge we decide to give up our phones? 40 days without my phone and I ended up reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in under a week and after that I swept through the series like a madwoman. I’m sure that over the pandemic I read over 10 million words because it’s all I did with my time. Read. Physical books, but more importantly online books. A whole new world opened to me because going to the library was rather difficult. Page 22

My mum introduced me to ‘Anne of Green Gables’, a series she loves, one my sister loves, and one that I have fallen in love with so much that I’m starting from the beginning and annotating my copies for my best friend. My mum bought me the entire series, but I’m only halfway through 6 years later. And this is the dilemma that has hit me as I’ve grown up. As a 6th Former, life is very busy. As a sister, life has been even busier. Reading books has taken the backseat for a while. As I read more online, the physical stack of books looking at me sadly, begging to be read are being ignored. I kept telling myself that I would pick up reading

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

again during the holiday – a little secret for you, I didn’t. I’m not looking down on people who read online, it helped me fall back in love with reading, but you can’t beat the feeling of having a physical book in your hands, and it allows you to disconnect from the pressures of life – it’s just you and your book. I have had the privilege of my mum being an avid reader – I have over 100 books at my disposal every day because she was willing to feed into my obsession. But what if you’re just getting into reading, or you’re coming back after a long time and don’t have the finance to spend money on buying countless books? The answer is rather simple. Every single town has one of these. The exterior of this building varies from town to town, but the interior stays the same – if you haven’t put it together yet, it’s my current favourite place in school, the library! The Chesterfield library has a grand total of… (one Google search later) an unrevealed amount, but trust me it’s a lot, I sat in the library two days a week for two hours during my Y10 summer and there’s endless amounts of shelves and genres. Fun Fact: this year is the year of reading! And let me relate the message that libraries all over Britain are sharing: “Whatever you’re into, you’ll find your library is the perfect place to Go All In.” If you’re into fantasy, medieval history, theatre, music, robots, horror – whatever it is that you’re interested in, head down to the library to look for something. Or if you don’t know what you want to read ask. At the end of Y7, my English teacher took us to the library for the last 20 minutes of Y7. I struggled to find a book to read, so I asked her what she recommended, and she gave me ‘The Golden Compass’ by Phillip Pullman. Lyra was a character I fell in love with instantly; I asked my mum to buy me the trilogy straight after I finished the first book because I couldn’t get enough. Recommendations are how I have most of the books on my shelf. Talking to other people about books not only allow you to connect to people within the book community, but you can

'The Chesterfield library has a grand total of… (one Google search later) an unrevealed amount, but trust me it’s a lot,'

have discussions around books – those are some of the most interesting conversations you will ever have. If you’re a parent the most important thing you can do during this age is take them to the library. The library does a summer reading challenge for kids – they’re brilliant! They win prizes and gain a certificate at the end of the summer if they complete the challenge, and it’s an excellent idea to get kids into reading. I mentioned that I have over 100 books on my shelf, over the summer that’s going to decrease spectacularly because something that I talked about whilst here was the importance of your personal collection. Your personal collection are the books that you are going to pass down to the next generations – they represent you. That doesn’t mean you have to only have the most pretentious books on your shelf, what it means is that it should be made up of books you love. There’s books on my shelf that I got as a child that I’ve never touched. I’m going to stop hoarding them and give them to the library so that another child can pick up the book and fall in love with reading. If you have any books, you don’t want anymore, don’t bin them – donate them, give them to a neighbour, or give them to a library. Reading is necessary for society to grow because it allows us to be empathetic towards people we’ve never met, it allows us to connect to people, it increases our vocabulary and it allows us to think critically about everything. Become an avid reader today.

Words & Images: Shaun Stevenson and Chris Fox

The history of some of Chesterfield’s best town centre pubs is explored in a new book by Shaun Stevenson and Chris Fox. Historical Tales and Traditional Ales is a reworking of their successful first booklet which contains new stories and anecdotes in a handy pocket-sized format retaining the self-guided pub tour theme, but with a new route and three new venues for you to visit. “We were pleasantly surprised by the success of our first edition”, commented local history enthusiast Shaun. “Everyone seemed delighted to learn the secret history of many places that they thought they knew so well”. The book focuses on eight well-known town centre pubs, but also touches on the history of some watering holes that have been lost over the years. Tales of murders and hauntings, famous and infamous local characters, long forgotten pub names and humorous yarns are

The new book is £3, available from the venues mentioned. "The landlords and landladies have paid for the books to be printed and the small profit that they make from the sale of books will go to them,” said Chris. "We appreciate their support and feel sure that their copies will sell out quickly.” Historical Tales and Traditional Ales has been designed as a self-guided pub tour of Chesterfield, so, it is not only of great interest to local people but is also very useful to visitors. For a copy, visit a venue or call Shaun on 07908 183160 where you can also reserve a space on the Chesterfield Great Historic Pub Tour.

Business Update

An Update from Karen @StraightCurves Words & Images: StraightCurves

It’s hard to believe its only been a year since I last talked to Karen when she lists what’s she's been up to. She’s been to Ireland, started a new job at Bluebank School, completed a Masters module in Higher Level Food Education, made an unbelievable decision to slow down and leave teaching at schools and is currently packing forC a weekend at Y Not! M

Treat yourself to some creative me time

www.straightcurves.co.uk

Slowing down is not really a Karen thing and to Y be honest it still sounds like she will be super CM busy. She is focusing on pretending to ‘retire’, caring for her parents, cats and putting her MY focus back into StraightCurves. She is currently going back to the brand and why it all started.CY StraightCurves has always been about sharing CMY skills, inspiring creativity, and creating a safe supportive community for our learners to take K time out. It’s all about “the proud giggle” says Karen “that magic combination of joy and pride that comes when someone sees what they’ve made in a session. Priceless.” StraightCurves is a not-for-profit business although Karen admits sometimes the lack of profit is related to her dislike for selling and advertising more than anything else it’s the teaching she loves. It’s full steam ahead for StraightCurves and she promises there will be a lot more to see and do at the studio this year. Including the return of children’s sessions and parties, new tutors (shh! All will be revealed soon) and lots of old favourite workshops and courses coming back to weekdays, evenings and weekends. Check out the website for the extensive list of courses and activities and make an appointment to get back in touch with your creative self. Page 30

A Tradition Returns Sunday 30 August 2026

Gala

Free Parking

For the past seven months, a team of local villagers have been working hard to bring back the Holymoorside Gala in its most traditional form - complete with a parade, village show and all the community spirit that comes with it. There have been several attempts to revive the Gala over the years, this is the first time in 35 years that the village will see a full Gala parade winding its way through Holymoorside. And this time, something feels different. The whole village has really got behind it, with one shared goal - bringing back a much-loved tradition and making it an annual event once more. We're sat with the revivalists of the Gala: Lyndsey (Chair of the Holymoorside Gala Committee), John (spokesman for the Well Dressing and avid participant in seeing how much Lyndsey can fit into the schedule), and jokers - Lynne (Chief Litter Picker), Marion (Assistant Litter Picker) and Finola (Dogsbody). "The response from the local community has been amazing," says Lyndsey. "The local school, the ladies' club, arts group, history society, horticultural group and the well dressing group have all joined in to support us. Because of all that support, we've got a great day planned on Sunday 30 August, over the Bank Holiday and Well Dressing Weekend." Lyndsey revealed that she decided to take on the challenge because "lots of people in the village remember how it used to be", but there are also new families who have moved to Holymoorside, and even people who have lived here all their lives who have never had the chance to experience a village Gala. Now, finally, they can. If, like me, you've never been to a Gala before, let me give you a run-down of what to expect. First off... how much? Advanced tickets are £5 for an adult and £3 for a child. The float parade, led by the Bolsover Samba Band, starts at 11am and runs until midday. Then from 12pm until 6pm you can watch the Dangerous Steve Motorbike Stunt Show and the Ridgeside Falconry Display, listen to live music from Take the Seven, Rogue, The Shambles Duo, the Honey Belles Choir and the Wingerworth Saxophone Quartet. Peak Radio will be the Master or Ceremonies for the whole day. You can watch or take part in the Little Nippers Terrier & Lurcher Racing, the Dog Show and the Holymoorside Duck Race is also making a return! The pony rides, vintage vehicle display and the Holymoorside Horticultural Society Open Show can all be enjoyed throughout the day. They'll be children's rides (a chair-o-plane, inflatable slide and bouncy castle), a big prize draw with some amazing prizes (top prize a £250 M&S voucher) and there will be lots of traditional games to play - Tombola, Splat the rat, Coconut shy, Tin can alley, Hook a duck and more... The Bull's Head (the local pub that's heading towards Michelin Star status!) will be keeping everyone well fed throughout the day.

www.chesterfieldlocal.com

If afternoon tea is more your thing, the lovely ladies in the Village Hall have got you covered. While you're there, make sure you have a look at the display of Gala memorabilia from years gone by, lovingly put together by the History Society. Whilst the Gala team have organised the day, they couldn't have done it without the support of Holymoorside and Walton Parish Council, Brampton Brewery, Dales & Peaks, Feather & Fern, Benson's Flooring & Beds, along with many other local businesses. There have also been some incredibly generous anonymous donations, as well as practical support, including tractors for the parade and fields for parking. Whoever you are... thank you!

As Lyndsey says, "It's taken a massive team effort and I'm really proud of what we've done so far, but we still need more volunteers on the day and for setting up - if you'd like to help just get in touch" A huge congratulations to Lyndsey and the team and judging by the excitement around the village, Holymoorside is more than ready to welcome its Gala back, and hopefully make it a tradition once again for generations to come. Holymoorsidegala Bernie Clifton opens the 1975 Gala

And every adult's favourite place... the beer tent... is kindly sponsored by Brampton Brewery, who have been huge supporters of the Gala committee from the very beginning.

Tickets are available from The Lamb Inn, The Bull's Head, Adam's Happy Hens, Londis on Chatsworth Road and One Stop in Walton, or you can pick one up at the Thursday Market in Holymoorside. There's still time to get yours, so come and be part of bringing this village tradition back.

Marching Band - 1970s Gala

There's even a competition for the best decorated garden, so get your bunting out and start preparing. The prize? The admiration of everyone walking or driving through the village... what more could you want? If you don't live in Holymoorside, don't let that stop you coming along. You might make some new friends, discover a new favourite event or simply enjoy a brilliant family day out. Lyndsey says "even if only a few hundred tickets sold I'd be really happy with things because it's only our first year."

Floats - 1979 Gala

With it being the first year, there will naturally be comparisons with Galas of the past. But, as Lyndsey says, "Because we're starting again, we can start our own traditions." One of those new traditions is the HMS Royalty Float, where anyone, whatever their age, can be royalty for the day. Pop on a crown, perfect your royal wave and join the parade. If things get a little overwhelming during the day, there will also be a quiet, inclusive space with calming music and sensory activities for anyone who needs a break from the excitement. Simply Singing For Joy Meet the Freevoices Community Choir Words: Paul Chapman

If you've ever fancied singing without the pressure of auditions, performances or even reading music, then the Freevoices Community Choir could be just the thing.

Helen. "People often ask if we'll perform somewhere, but we always say no." Avoiding concerts removes the pressure that can put many people off joining a choir.

I recently met up with Denise Harper and Helen Davies, two of the three volunteers who keep the choir running, along with Joyce Hart. The group now meets at St Thomas' Church Centre and has been bringing people together through song for over 20 years.

"It's not because we're not good enough," Helen laughs. "In fact, we're actually quite good. We just want people to enjoy singing without feeling they have to perfect every song."

The choir was founded in 2005 by Francis Watts, then Arts Officer for Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire. "When Francis moved away in 2008, there wasn't one person who wanted to take over," Helen explains. "So the three of us decided we'd run it together instead." That shared approach has worked well ever since, creating a relaxed, welcoming choir that's a little different from most. "We're not a traditional choir," Denise says with a smile. "None of us reads music or plays instruments. We learn everything by ear and sing a cappella." The repertoire is wonderfully varied, with songs from around the world, often sung in different languages and arranged in four-part harmony. It might sound challenging, but the atmosphere couldn't be more relaxed. The reason is, they don't perform. "We sing purely for fun, pleasure and friendship," says

Around 20 members attend regularly, although there are more on the books, and everyone is welcome. It's also not just for women – the choir would be delighted to welcome more male voices too. So what keeps everyone coming back week after week? "Friendship," they both answer without hesitation. Alongside the enjoyment of singing itself, members value the social side, plenty of laughter and the wellbeing benefits that singing together can bring. The choir has recently moved from the Friends Meeting House to St Thomas' Church Centre, where it now meets every Thursday from 11am to 12.30pm. There's no audition, no expectation of musical knowledge and no need to memorise lyrics, as song sheets are provided. Sessions cost just £5 to help cover the venue hire, and new members are always welcome. So if you've ever wanted to sing simply for the joy of it, why not come along? You might just find your new favourite Thursday morning.

All welcome! No audition! No need to read muic! Jut turn up and ing for pleaure!
