Intro
Welcome to another fabulous (IMO) edition of S40 Local. First up, thanks to everyone who has ever donated a fiver or more for their classified adverts in S40 and S41 Local, we sent another £135 off to Ashgate Hospice and there is already more in the pot. A personal thank you for contributing to this much loved and appreciated local institution. Secondly, thanks to the lady in Waterstones for making my day recently, sorry I didn't get your name, but I often give out my email address for various things. For the first time in over 17 years she said, 'oh from the magazine?' I've been recognised. Next up we've got two articles contributed by Isobel who recently did work experience with us, one looking at the arts in Chesterfield and the other, a deeper dive article talking to three of towns independent businesses that we spoke to in the last edition. We've also revisited an article from four years ago by Maisie Cook. I came across it recently and it feels timely talking about Maisie's concerns for starting University. I got back in touch with Maisie to see how it was going, she's kindly provided an update. Go check it out. I recently attended the showing of a film that focuses on climate change produced by the National Emergency Briefing. A thought provoking film that balances concern but also provides some glimmers of hope. Another that feels timely given our second heatwave before July. Alongside all this we have the usual list of events happening locally and all sorts of activities taking place in new square, so many in fact it's hard to see how we'll manage to get to them all! Last but not least, thanks to Oliver Hoffmeister for allowing us to feature his artwork on the cover. Excellent stuff. Enjoy and we'll be back soon with the Summer edition. From Chesterfield to the Prado The artistic journey of Oliver Hoffmeister Text: Simon Paterson Images: Oliver Hoffmeister
At just 30 years old, Chesterfield born artist Oliver Hoffmeister has already built an impressive career, taking him from local classrooms to some of Europe's most prestigious artistic institutions. Raised in Chesterfield, Oliver attended Old Hall Junior School, Brookfield School and later Chesterfield College. While many children enjoy drawing, for Oliver it became something much more. "I don't remember a time when I wasn't drawing," he says. "Everybody draws when they're younger, but I just never seemed to grow out of it." A key influence came during his school years. "I had a really good teacher at Brookfield called Miss Andrews who nurtured that interest and encouraged me. Looking back, that was probably when I realised this was something I wanted to pursue long term." That decision led him to Newcastle University, where he studied Fine Art between 2014 and 2018. Upon graduating, he was awarded the Hatton Prize for excellence in artistic practice, recognition that helped launch his professional career.
Page 4
After university, Oliver secured a studio in Newcastle before earning a fully funded scholarship place at the renowned Royal Drawing School in London. "It was an incredible opportunity," he explains. "For a full year I was able to focus entirely on drawing and developing my practice." His time in London brought further success, including the Jack Goldhill Studio Practice Prize and selection for the Richard Ford Award, which took him to Madrid for six weeks working directly with the collections of the Prado Museum. "I had access to works by artists like Goya and could draw directly from pieces in the collection. It genuinely felt like a dream come true." Despite his growing reputation, Oliver remains remarkably grounded and refreshingly honest about his work. Describing his artistic style, he says: "I work with what I call the imagined image. We're surrounded by visual information all day through screens, adverts and social media. I allow all of that to filter through and then create something new from it."
www.chesterfieldlocal.com
Top: 'Josh's Palette' Bottom: 'Head, Boat, Sun'
Cover His work is predominantly figurative, blending imagination, observation and, increasingly, humour. "I think artists sometimes take themselves too seriously," he laughs. "At the end of the day, in my case, I'm rubbing oily dirt onto fabric. That's basically what I'm doing." One of Oliver's biggest inspirations is David Hockney, who sadly recently passed way, an artist whose work has remained a constant influence throughout his life. "He's somebody who's always surprised me. No matter how my own tastes have changed, I've always found something new in his work. He's never stopped creating, and that's incredibly inspiring." Today, Oliver helps run Overlay Press, a print studio in Newcastle, while continuing to develop his own artistic practice. He has recently secured funding for a new creative project and has also been accepted onto a residency at Dumfries House later this year. For young artists growing up in Chesterfield, his message is simple. "Don't think that where you grow up defines your reach," he says. "You can come from Chesterfield and still connect with audiences all over the world." He also encourages young creatives to embrace feedback and not fear it. "If somebody takes the time to have an opinion about your work, it means you've made them stop and think. That's a positive thing." From the classrooms of Chesterfield to the galleries of London and museums of Madrid, Oliver Hoffmeister's story is proof that talent, determination and self-belief can take you a very long way indeed. Opinion
Independent Chesterfield Words: Isobel Grocutt
Last month, we spoke about the changing identity of Chesterfield. I also had the opportunity to talk to three independent businesses in Chesterfield, who shared their views on the town’s close-knit community and gave us an insight into the experiences that local businesses have in towns like ours, allowing us to celebrate the importance of independent retailers. First to share his thoughts is Gavin Grainger, owner of Bottle & Thyme, Elder Wine, and OTI Interiors at the top of the town centre. His first business, Bottle & Thyme, opened in 2016 and relocated to their current address two years ago. He comments on the variety of lovely people he comes across through his work. "The personality of Chesterfield is on the up, the current regeneration projects have been tastefully chosen and executed by the council", adding that this significantly improves the town’s image. He discusses the opportunities and advantages of the town for different groups of people: "There are lots of events going on, but perhaps there is a lack of things in the town centre for young people". However, he points out the advantages of great transport links, being nextdoor to the Peak District, and the affordability that Chesterfield offers. "It is essential to maintain a healthy balance between chain companies and independent businesses, offering people both the familiarity they need and the care for the community" he explains. "Being a local business is hard, but the sociable community is what really makes the shopping experience for everyone." Page 10
Next, Corey Lavender from Vanishing Point Records enlightens us on Chesterfield’s history. His business opened nine years ago, and he has lived in Chesterfield since he was five years old. He describes his community as "really close - record-lovers seem to sniff me out, rather than it being the other way around. Lots of the biggest artists in the 60s and 70s used to perform here, like Pink Floyd and The Who" he says, reminding us of Chesterfield’s musical history. This has drawn in tourists for many decades, as has the Crooked Spire - we are more famous than we might realise. As someone who has lived here practically his whole life, Corey has watched the town change drastically. "The big companies all close, leaving empty spaces behind, I wish they would get rehomed" he says, explaining that small businesses can’t afford big premises. "It would be nice if they could join together and have a sort of indie-retailer indoor market". He also points out "It's hard targeting events at the right people, times are tough for many. Spare cash to spend on gigs and events has to compete with being spent on essentials, it makes it hard for us all." Being an independent business in a town has its advantages for Corey, as rent is lower and competition is not so fierce. "It may be harder for some to reach target markets in Chesterfield, but it is much more worth it for the relationships we establish with customers. Independent businesses play an important role in towns, as post-COVID there is more need for community than ever." Cheryl Knowles, owner of Eclectic Delights of Serendipity on High Street having moved to the town centre two years ago, explains the
www.chesterfieldlocal.com
challenges that local businesses face. They have recently opened upstairs, where they sell unwanted clothes for people, taking a percentage of the profit, Vinted but IRL! "I love how close Chesterfield’s community is, I get loads more regulars than I would at a touristy place like Matlock." She also points out that "Chesterfield will never be the market town it once was. Recent regeneration projects have certainly helped, but people are just wishing for the past." The increase of online shopping has meant everything has changed, but this doesn’t have to be viewed negatively. She also comments on the controversy around parking charges. "I don’t blame the council, they need to make money somehow" she says. "It’s the same in every town. Compare Chesterfield to Cornwall, and you’ve got yourself a bargain."

"I wholeheartedly believe that us independent retailers work together as a community to make a place what it is"
All local businesses have to work harder than big retailers, but you’ll always find it’s the independent companies who care about the community, contribute to the towns personality, and ultimately keep it going. Thanks again to Isobel for choosing to spend her work experience with us, and for penning this insightful and optimistic piece. We really appreciated your time. Paul & Simon.
Gavin Grainger @OTI Interiors
Cheryl imagines that running a local business in a city would be just as challenging. "It’s hard for everyone, especially with the increasingly high costs of rent. But despite the challenges we face, I wholeheartedly believe that us independent retailers work together as a community to make a place what it is."

Climate
From little acorns... Words: Paul Chapman
There are a lot of mixed messages, views and opinions about subjects that we should debate with a grown up acceptance of peoples differing views. Social media makes picking out the truth increasingly complex and even starting some conversations is difficult. Many people are deeply concerned about rising temperatures - 83% of people recognise that something needs to happen, maybe we need to make a bit more noise about it. At a personal level we're struggling to deal with multiple heatwaves in a country not accustomed to living in such heat. The People's Emergency Briefing wants us to consider climate change. The following text is from their website: Page 14
'The UK faces a growing climate and nature emergency. Yet most people have never been fully briefed on what it means for our lives, our economy and our future. The People's Emergency Briefing is a new film from the National Emergency Briefing and sets out the risks facing the nation - and the credible, positive responses available - in a clear and accessible account designed for screenings in communities across the UK. The 50-minute film combines authoritative scientific content from an event that took place at Westminster and includes reactions from members of the public and some more familiar faces - designed to help us process the information on a more human level. It delivers the frank facts
www.chesterfieldlocal.com
about the threats, but also the enormous benefits if Government leads genuine emergency action. Many of those attending the event commented that although the facts are alarming, they felt a sense of optimism about confronting the challenge together and seeing a pathway to a better future. The film was conceived and developed by Ben Carey and Henrik Delehag at climate comms lab Utopia Bureau.' The Chesterfield showing of the film took place in Chesterfield Library on a recent Saturday morning. Keen to understand the facts a bit more I went along. The film is hosted by Chris Packham known for BBC’s Springwatch programs but himself a steadfast campaigner for wildlife and nature in the UK and beyond. It gives a high level summary of nine briefings that were delivered to Westminster that covered, nature, climate, tipping points, weather extremes, food security, health, national security, economics, energy transition and the briefings were chaired by Prof. Mike Berners Lee, a researcher and writer on carbon footprinting and the author of ‘There Is No Planet B’. There were lots of facts and figures presented and personally I find it hard to argue with the science. I know there are some that might deny the science, but it’s 36 degrees plus outside as I type and it feels very real. There was talk about +3 and 4 degree warming and the impact this would have, the impact of a ‘crisis cascade’ where multiple changes impact at once, the issue we face by chasing constant growth and commercialism, how countries who lose crops find their lands claimed to war, and the way that those who shout loudest are the ones set to lose the most, eg: oil and large corporations.
meat every day, we can still have a Sunday roast or a burger on the BBQ but we need to try to reduce it and replace things with more veggies - it's good for the planet, and for our health. So, my personal view? It was scary but I left with a sense of hope and it made me wonder about what can I do to make a difference? Until acting on climate change becomes a way to make money, I can’t see the large corps taking action. I can reduce car usage, walk and cycle more, make the house more efficient with solar and batteries, swap to an electric vehicle, only buy locally made products and locally grown food, cut out meat… uhm, helping the planet is going to take time. One thing I can do is commit to more articles and encourage people to look at changes. Anything I do personally feels like a drop in the ocean, what if many people make a change, maybe a puddle, and the ripple effect of multiple voices starts to force change. Locally I’ll be catching up with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the Don Catchment Rivers Trust to learn if things are changing and I'll arrange a screening of the film for the tenants and families at Station Road to help. If you want to know more the film isn’t available to watch online or on terrestrial TV but you can arrange a local viewing etc. If you do one thing, scan the QR code and check the film trailer, it might just stir you into action.
One fact that I felt hit home was the use of land, I never knew that 85% of agricultural land is used to feed animals so we can eat them. Simply increasing the level of plants in our diets would make a massive change. This doesn't mean cutting out Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

The Next Step Words: Maisie Cook
ED: With exams complete and families back together after Uni for the summer this piece by Maisie Cook from 2022 seems very timely. Enjoy the original text with an update from Maisie to bring things up to date.
It’s that time of year again. Even if you’re not going through the process yourself, you probably either know someone in your family who is, or you remember your own experience of it many moons ago. Making the leap to your next step post-18, be it university, an apprenticeship or full-time employment, is terrifying, but also very exciting. Wishing to study the English language further, I have applied to university. Luckily, I have been accepted by all 5 of the universities I applied to, on the condition that I obtain certain A-Level grades, which, I should achieve with some dedicated revision and intense completing of past papers. Whilst the primary focus is on gaining a new lease of independence when going away to university, some of the more worrying feelings that come with the process are often overlooked. By writing this, I hope to alleviate some of the stress that any fellow applicant reading is feeling. To let you know that you are not alone in your thoughts, or if you’ve long since completed your degree, you’ll hopefully be able to read this with Page 18
sympathy as, looking back on your own experience with uni, you remember feeling the same. My biggest concern is not whether I’ll get the grades, nor is it whether I’ll make friends; it’s the fact I’ll have to cook for myself. Growing up an only child, I’ll admit it, I’ve been indulged. Every night, my tea is on the table (which at least I have set - my one chore) and I’ve never questioned it. But soon, all that is going to change. Currently, my specialities are microwaveable rice in a packet, pasta with a microwaveable sauce or anything you can shove in the oven on a tray with chips. If I don’t start practising, it will be a shock to the system when I’ve exhausted all my culinary delights two weeks in. Thankfully, my mum has offered to give me some tips and tricks over the next few months and during the summer before I go, to ensure that I won’t just be living off packet food or blowing all my student loans on takeaways. I am sure that many others will have this same anxiety, so
www.chesterfieldlocal.com
rest assured, if you perfect a selection of classic dishes, you’ll be absolutely fine, and then you can practise even more meals with your flatmates once you get there. Another thing I’ve been pushing to the back of my mind is how to handle my finances. Don’t even talk to me about how much I spent on a meal last night - all I’m saying is my bank account was groaning. In my defence, it is pretty hard to know exactly how much is too much for a sandwich if you’ve never had to portion your money like me. Realising you’re going to have to be more restrained with your money to ensure it doesn’t all run out after a month is a hard fact to face, but I’m sure there must be hundreds of student finance tracker apps to help you manage your money wisely. Suppose your university takes your accommodation money out automatically. In that case, this will alleviate a bit of stress as you won’t have to worry about getting it paid in time, but it will still be crucial to make sure you do have the funds available to pay for it. So, whether you’re going off to university like me, taking a gap year, starting an apprenticeship or full-time employment, I wish you the best of luck in the summer exams and I hope when you finally take that next step, it brings you lots of friendships and exciting opportunities. AND NOW... It’s that time of year again… except I now have a degree and a job! And spoiler: I didn’t just survive on microwaveable packet rice for the entirety of my uni experience! After the long Summer of 22’, I packed everything but the kitchen sink into my parents’ Volvo and headed off to begin my three year English Language degree at The University of Manchester. I started off just making simple meals, such as stir fry (using pre-packaged stir fry veg and a ready-made sauce, might I add), and, like I envisioned, anything you could shove in the oven on a tray with chips, including pizza, fishcakes and quiche. And, contrary to popular belief, some uni students do actually eat fruit and
veg! Every night I religiously chopped up cucumber, celery, red pepper and carrot to accompany these oven specialities. For my second and third year of uni, I ended up living with my partner (first with friends and then in a flat of our own), who it turns out is a great lover of cooking, so I suppose I was very lucky in that sense. In all honesty however, neither of us are creative geniuses when it comes to conjuring up original recipe ideas, so TikTok became our best friend, hours spent huddled over my phone planning the next week’s menu. Some of these remain our favourite dishes to cook to this day, like cheesy bacon orzo and prawn Alfredo. On the budgeting front, I’m happy to report that I’m not even in my overdraft! Whilst I didn’t use any of the student budgeting apps out there, of which I’m sure there are many great ones, I found using a bills-splitting app in my second year house very helpful. I gained the title of ‘Mother of the House’ and arranged the bills, created the house group chat, and liaised with the contractors, who regularly attended to issues such as mould, blocked showers and, at Christmas time, my bedroom ceiling caving in because of a roof leak. Although I found balancing housekeeping with my studies very stressful at the time, I can now look back in gratitude that the experience taught me important life skills which I imagine will come in handy again - although hopefully not because of a flooded bedroom! Uni was both a challenging and greatly rewarding experience. I gained some lovely friends and learnt important life lessons, and on top of all that, earned myself a degree! It can’t have been too bad, because as of today, I’m a month into my first big-girl job working at the Uni in Student Support and absolutely loving it! It seems only right to end this update the same way past Maisie did. So, if you’re going off to university in September, like I was four years ago, I wish you the best of luck and I hope your journey is filled with wonderful friendships, amazing experiences… and maybe a few takeaways!

From murals and exhibitions to workshops and clubs, art is undeniably becoming a bigger part of life in Chesterfield. Organisations such as Junction Arts help to promote the creative aspect of the town and create opportunities for local artists and creative individuals to come together. With the current regeneration projects taking place in Chesterfield, the creative nature of the town can shine. Junction Arts, a local art charity based in the town centre, do all they can to create accessible spaces for everyone to express their inner creativity. Hannah Bowdler, Development Manager at Junction Arts, explains what they are doing locally and the impact it's having. She first celebrates the success of April’s Derbyshire Makes event in town, describing it as "...jampacked. It shows people that art can be a paid job, and it is worthwhile," she explains. Recent changes such as the Pomegranate Theatre refurbishments and the change of address of Junction Arts to the town centre have also meant that art is more accessible. Hannah has definitely felt a growth in the arts and culture of Chesterfield. Junction Arts engages young people, "skill building, knowledge sharing, teaching and showing are the fundamental aspects of the organisation," she says. An example is their recent work with Abercrombie Primary School, where they allowed the year six students to help program this year’s Chesterfield Children’s Festival. This gave children in Chesterfield a voice to express their interests and ensure that the event remains relevant to young people. "There’s always more that can and should be done" she explains. "There are plenty of events on going and planned, such as Beam Arts UK’s recent projection on the market hall. Beam will also be organising a sculpture trail in town in the near future which aims to highlight Chesterfield’s history." Things like this hugely impacts the reputation of the town, creating a deeper sense of pride in our history and community than we might realise. Chesterfield’s art projects are far from finished, though. "We have a long way to go still, however we are definitely in a better position," says Hannah. "There will always be people who disagree with how funding is spent, but it is not just for the benefit of the artists involved." She argues that "investment in the town immediately makes it look nicer", pointing out that the
refurbishments of the market squares cater much better for creative events. Nathan Hamer, Project Co-ordinator at Junction Arts, shares his views on the role that art plays in the identity of Chesterfield. "There’s always been a decent amount of creatives here," he says, "however they seem to be becoming more visible. The general public have more appetite now for things like festivals and workshops". With the significant social change happening all around us recently, it is important to have these safe spaces in order for everyone to stay positive. We may not realise it, but things like art can have a huge impact on us in terms of mental health. Nathan emphasises the importance of "connections and community in preventing loneliness". While understanding that people may believe the investment could be more usefully spent elsewhere, Nathan believes "If we can't afford to bring joy and colour to the world, there’s something wrong". The people contributing to these projects are all paid artists, it's their job. "Many people don’t realise that the funding doesn’t come out of their council tax, it comes from elsewhere". These art events help make Chesterfield more attractive for tourism and look more inviting. They're opportunities to bring creatives together and celebrate the artistic identity of the town. However, things like this take time. "It doesn’t happen overnight, it takes a long time to build an audience", says Nathan. He has noticed more and more comments about Junction Arts from locals over recent years, suggesting that people are becoming more aware of art projects they run. It's important to recognise ways to make life more optimistic and colourful. "It’s a chance to just enjoy something, and take part in things for the sake of it", we need this more than ever during tough times. Whether it is through public art, workshops, or local events, Chesterfield continues to showcase its vibrant personality through the constant events happening, and with much more to look forward to. It is more important now than ever to appreciate and take part in creating these communities and celebrating art within towns like ours. www.junctionarts.co.uk

Turning the Page A New Chapter at 60
Words: Joanne Hallett & Simon Paterson
When Ashgate resident and first-time author Joanne Hallett decided to mark her 60th birthday with a new challenge, she had no idea where the journey would lead. After spending several years honing her craft as part of an online creative writing group, entering competitions and building a collection of stories, Joanne finally took the plunge into selfpublishing. The result is Gentle Deception, a collection of romantic, spicy and cleverly crafted short stories packed with unexpected twists.
T's and C's apply. No correspondence will be entered into.
Rather than taking the well-trodden route of publishing through Amazon, Joanne was determined to keep the project local. The book was published through Chesterfield-based Bannister Publications, while local businesses have supported everything from promotional materials to events. “It was a scary step,” admits Joanne. “I had all these stories sitting on my laptop and decided that turning 60 was the perfect time to do something completely out of my comfort zone.” Since launching the book, Joanne has embraced the challenge of promoting it herself, organising book signings at libraries, cafés and community venues across the area. The response so far has exceeded expectations. Demand has been so strong that a second print run has already been ordered, proving there is a real appetite for independently published local authors. Adding an extra layer of purpose to the project, £1 from every copy sold is donated to the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, where Joanne works. The charity connection is particularly close to her heart, and it means that every sale helps support local patients and their families. Name:
Her book is already being described as the perfect summer read. It is available through a growing number of local outlets, including Gigi Brown Hair Salon and Chi Beauty Salon in Chesterfield town centre, and The Olive Lounge in Wingerworth. For Joanne, however, the biggest reward has been the experience itself. “Meeting new people, hosting readings and doing book signings has been completely outside my comfort zone,” she says. “But I'm absolutely loving the journey.” Gentle Deception is available now, with proceeds supporting the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. For more events, stockists and updates, follow Joanne’s Facebook page: Joanne Hallett – Gentle Deception To be in with a chance of winning a copy: Email: Text:

Sadomasochism for Accountants
Romeo & Juliet
Thu 23 to Sat 25 July The Old Clubhouse, Buxton
From Eyam to Chatsworth, a volunteer cast aged 16 to 86 brings open-air Romeo and Juliet to six Peak District landmarks Shakespeare’s tragedy of two feuding families plays under the summer sky at the World Heritage mills at Cromford, the courtyard at Eyam Hall and the grounds of Chatsworth, 9 to 18 July 2026.
Chesterfieldbased Ashgate Heritage Arts (AHA) brings an outrageous new British adult musical comedy Sadomasochism for Accountants - to the Buxton Fringe Festival. A departure for AHA, whose previous productions have included the family friendly Crooked Spire Medieval Murder Mystery Musical (2022) and the award-winning Mountains of the Moon (2024). Mountains of the Moon was named Best Children’s Show at the 2024 Buxton Fringe Festival. Eddie Waller, who stars in Season 3 of the BAFTA award-winning show, Sherwood, won Best Youth Actor is also in the show.
Thu 9 to Sat 18 July Open-Air
Thu 9 July Wildhive Callow Hall, Ashbourne Fri 10 July Cromford Mill Sat 12 July Eyam Hall Thu 16 July Whirlowbrook Hall, Sheffield Fri 17 July Over Haddon Sat 18 July Chatsworth "Romeo and Juliet is a story about two families who cannot live alongside one another, and there is something powerful about telling it in places that each carry a history of their own, from the courtyard at Eyam Hall to the mills at Cromford. We are a company of every age, entirely run by volunteers, and there is nothing quite like watching this play take hold of an audience as the sun goes down over the Peak District," Lindsay Jackson, director, Chatsworth Players.
Based on the hilariously offbeat novel by Rosy Barnes, the musical has been produced and written by Martin Coslett (pictured right), who has co-adapted the book for stage with poet Tim Leichtfried (pictured left) of Writers in the Peak. The creative team also includes Harry Style (The Tom Lehrer Show, Shantify, The Voice), and Frazer Meakin as Director of the show. Martin said: “We found Rosy’s novel hilarious and have been wanting to adapt it and put it in front of audiences. It is so appropriate in the current social climate. The core message is to be proud of who you are.” The show explores identity, relationships and the masks people wear, both in everyday life and behind closed doors. The two-act musical comedy can be seen at The Old Clubhouse, Buxton. Tickets £10 with group discounts available. www.ticketsource.co.uk/ashgateheritagearts The Opera House Box office: 0333 666 3366
Tickets are on sale now (see website below) priced £15, plus a £1 booking fee. Running time is approximately 2 hours, including an interval. The production is suitable for ages 13 and over. The show goes ahead in light rain, and audiences are advised to dress for a Peak District evening; performances are only cancelled in genuinely dangerous weather such as high winds or lightning. www.chatsworthplayers.com/tickets

Chesterfield Crafters Bazaar
Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 August 2026
Sunday 23 August 2026
The award winning Byways open garden at 7a Brookfield Avenue, Chesterfield, S40 3NX will be open for visitors on 1 and 2 August 2026.
Chesterfield Crafters Bazaar returns for a fifth year enabling crafters to buy and sell their surplus crafting materials.
This colourful garden with large perennial borders will be open for it's 15th year. Admission £4 and children free. There are seating areas around the garden to enjoy tea and homemade cakes. Please get along and enjoy the calm of the large pergola housing many acers, hostas and ferns. Following the event a donation will be made to Ashgate Hospice. See advert below for details.
• Crafters Bazaar • Local artists and crafters • Selling surplus craft materials and tools • Sunday 23 August 2026 - 10am to 4pm • Market Square • Stalls cost £15 Crafters Bazaar is a market for re-circulating crafting materials, tools, magazines and books. If you have a hoard of crafting items in your spare room, loft or shed why not have a look through and pick out those things you don’t want any more or may never use. Have a clear out of your stash of yarn, fabric, paper, card, ink, paint, brushes, pens, pencils, needles, tools, craft magazines and craft books. Let someone else buy and then craft with your unwanted items. It may encourage people to try a new hobby at an affordable price. Perhaps share a stall with a friend or fund raise for your chosen charity. It is important to note that Crafters Bazaar is not a place for craft material traders selling new products or for people selling finished craft items. The aim is to keep crafting materials in circulation and stop them going to landfill.
SATURDAY 1 & SUNDAY 2 AUGUST 11:30am to 4:30pm
The Crafters Bazaar is organised by Transition Chesterfield, a voluntary community group set up in 2008 with the aim of helping Chesterfield to become more resilient, sustainable, low carbon and locally self sufficient.

Garden Tips
Tips for a Sustainable Garden Words: Transition Chesterfield & Inspire Community Garden
After a warm, dry year overall so far, gardens across Chesterfield are showing signs of water stress. While it hasn’t been officially declared a drought yet, many gardeners are facing parched soil and thirsty plants. These tips will help you manage: 1. Water containers with care – Brief showers won’t reach the roots in pots. Check regularly and water deeply in the early morning when evaporation is lowest. 2. Mulch generously – Cover bare soil with compost, well-rotted manure, grass clippings or leaf mould. It helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect soil life from extreme heat. 3. Reuse greywater where safe – Water from washing up bowls, showers or rinsing veg can be used on ornamental plants (not edibles) as long as it’s free from harsh chemicals or bleach. 4. Prioritise – Focus your watering on young plants, containers, and anything flowering or fruiting. Established shrubs and trees are more resilient. 5. Keep dead-heading – Removing faded flowers helps plants conserve energy and may encourage more blooms, especially in roses, cosmos and bedding plants. 6. Sow fast-growing crops – There’s still time for quick salad leaves, herbs, radishes and dwarf beans. Water well at sowing and consider providing a bit of shade in the hottest part of the day. 7. Plan ahead for autumn – Hardy crops like beetroot, carrots and spring onions can be sown now for harvesting later in the year. Water in well and mulch to support germination.

8. Watch for signs of stress – Wilting, yellowing or leaf drop may mean plants are struggling. Move containers into shade if possible and avoid feeding drought-stressed plants, as this can worsen the strain. 9. Houseplant holidays – Many indoor plants enjoy a few weeks outside in summer. Tuck them into a shady, sheltered spot and give their leaves an occasional rinse to remove dust. 10. Don’t forget to enjoy it – no garden is perfect, but gardening is still a joy. Water wisely, tend mindfully, and take pleasure in the colour, scent and wildlife that summer brings. For growing advice and inspiration, visit Inspire Community Garden on Sunday mornings, Wednesday afternoon or Thursday evenings.
