Intro Hi and welcome to the June edition.

Enjoying the sun? It was very warm when I wrote this!

We've a packed edition again, so many pages of What's On events to go see, market days using the redeveloped Market and New Square, and a whole host of interesting events are starting to dominate the pages of S40 Local. Not a bad thing in my opinion.

We also have news from four businesses, two brand new ones who have opened up next door to each other on Chatsworth Road, Little Wren, a children's toy and gift shop, and 416 Lauren Yates - Makeup & Brow Artist and Jo Weston - DermaRenew Medical Aesthetics. We then have news from Oculi and Soresby Street Cafe It's reat to see new businesses opening, old ones doing so well and the community coming along to support them.

These businesses clearly believe in the strength of community - one thing we have here in Chesterfield in buckets full!

This is supported by Isobel Grocutt's piece about the town centre, Isobel joined us for work experience and it was great to hear the considered views about our town seen through the eyes a young person.

Tiny Art: Big Impact The 5th Chesterfield Postcard Show Text: Isobel Grocutt Images: Junction Arts

This year marks the 5th year of the locally treasured Chesterfield Postcard Show. Back in 2021, the first theme chosen was ‘Happy’. When everything had just begun to re-open and everyone was feeling dejected, Junction Arts wanted to use open, positive themes through their artwork to change topics of conversation to be more optimistic.

Hannah Bowdler does all the packaging and exhibiting alongside Dave Elsom of Sombrero Printmaking, a lino printer who volunteers and works with Junction Arts. Tom Newell, a Chesterfield illustrator who took part in Derbyshire Makes, also contributed to the Chesterfield Postcard Show in May and Keith Duncan's fabulous artwork is featured on the cover. Junction Arts collaborated with 40 local artists during the Derbyshire Makes project in April, who also took part in the Postcard Show along with many other local artists.

This year’s theme was ‘Things we love’, bringing in a broad range of art including watercolour, illustrations, and photography - the only restriction is that it has to be A6. The postcards featured many different perspectives on what ‘Things we Love’ can mean, including Chesterfield, landscapes, cats, dogs, and family. This year has been more successful than ever, with 363 postcards being donated and 134 being sold. Junction Arts made over £1,800 - a huge jump from £800 raised in 2025. All money raised goes back to the Junction Arts charity.

The Postcard Show is a community focused event, developed based on engagement and is open to individual artists, local art groups and more - the majority not being ‘traditional’ artists. Junction Arts aims to bring together local communities and publicise the creative identity that Chesterfield has.

Next year’s theme will be ‘The Little Things that Matter’, celebrating everyday comfort, connection, and joy.

Junction Arts hope to continue with 2026’s success, and would love as many people as possible to get involved.

Time to go back to the shops?

Chatsworth Road has seen many changes since S40 Local first printed back in 2009, most of the buildings remain but the businesses occupying them have changed many times.

Take the small row of four shops at 414 to 420 Chatsworth Road. ‘Making it for you’ was a shop offering clothing alterations, repairs and bespoke handmade items. They were also the first call we ever made as S40 Local and they said, ‘Ok we’ll have a full page’, guys if you’re reading this, you’ll never know what an impact you had on our confidence to establish S40 Local, a massive thanks from us.

Since then, the shop at 414 has been numerous businesses, most recently Palace Roofline, and today I’m here meeting Lucy Wheatcroft from ‘Little Wren’ a new children’s toy and gift shop, more on that over the page.

Next door is 416 Chatsworth Road, a new beauty and aesthetics salon, again more on that over the page… this used to be Igloo Cycles one of my favourite shops on Chatsworth Road and one I sadly miss.

Oculi sit at 420 Chatsworth Road, previously ‘The Little Black Dress’, ‘Chameleon’, ‘Created Gallery’ to name a few and even a farmer's insurance brokers for a while.

This row of businesses also includes The Union Jack chip shop and between them offer a

fantastic row of small independent businesses run by people who live in our community, provide valuable services and care passionately about what they do.

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about seeing a familiar shopfront come back to life, these places will hold memories for many of us as we pass through their doors.

I’ve made a couple of online purchases recently, for items I can't buy locally and paid £37 in delivery charges! I know people moan about parking but that’s a lot more than I’d pay to park in town.

The high street holds a special appeal, it offers places we can call in and browse, see and hold what we want, discuss products and services with knowledgeable people and spend our cash… keeping it in the community, which is so Important. If we want our economy to be stronger and more vibrant we need our cash to stay in Chesterfield.

On the subject of cash, maybe we need to use it more. I’m guilty of using the card and phone to pay but I noticed a local small business had a note behind the till, asking to pay by cash if we can. The bank had taken over £500 from them in the last month in bank and card transaction charges. Shocking.

Reduce the clicks, walk the walk and flash the cash, let’s all do what we can to support our local independent businesses.

I had the pleasure of catching up with Lucy Wheatcroft, owner of new business ‘Little Wren’, a children's gift shop aimed at babies and young children, at 414 Chatsworth Road.

People will know Lucy from Westfield School, although more formally as Mrs Wheatcroft.

Lucy tries whenever she can to shop at independents, and has discovered many lovely brands over the years which she is delighted to stock at Little Wren. “I really value personal service and being able to see the products rather than buying online where you simply don’t know if you will be happy with your purchase until the package arrives,” says Lucy.

Her shop is a delight I must admit. The focus is on quality and sustainability, products made to last, lovely, curated gifts including toys and clothing that you can touch and feel, a pleasure to browse, the old-fashioned approach and ideally with reduced packaging.

“Products include old classic and timeless wooden toys from brands such as Orange Tree Toys, Bigjigs and Speedy Monkey. Toys that foster creativity and encourage children to use their imagination and engage in open ended play. Toys to take children away from screens,” explains Lucy.

The range of ‘Little Bird Told Me’ toys features rocking products, baby walkers, ride ons, and pull alongs, all with sensory elements, traditional wooden toys that help promote balance and co-ordination. Lucy comments that her daughter played with these, so many of them have been tried and tested in house!

There’s a lovely gardening kit, something fun and educational to get kids outside to explore the garden and ignite curiosity. It’s a pizza topping kit that enables you to grow basil, peppers, tomatoes and rocket in biodegradable bamboo pots. There’s also the Bee and Butterfly Garden kit, which also includes pots, compost and plant markers, ready to go. Other gardening products include a mini greenhouse, watering cans and hand tools.

The French company Moulin Roty features a range of soft toys, baby rattles and comforters with a lovely quality feel and beautiful attention to detail.

In addition, there are Usborne and Orchard Toys jigsaws, lift the flap books, building blocks, first toolboxes, castles and farm sets, and a dog set to teach you how to look after your own pet.

Slightly older children can enjoy sewing, crochet and knitting kits from Buttonbag and beauty bags, something a little more grown up.

Many products are designs that have stood the test of time and will continue to do so. There’s a small section for teenagers and mothers plus Kite clothing, a sustainable brand using organic cotton featuring unique designs, again tried and tested in house by Lucy’s daughter.

It’s lovely to see the premises open again for retail, toys and gifts, something always needed, a gift from Grandma, a card to go with it, did I mention they have a range of Caroline Gardner and Stop the Clock cards and gifts from Sophie Allport and Burgon & Ball? Nothing you buy will need a plug, battery or charger, it’s a range of carefully curated toys and gifts from someone who has had a career in children's education so knows the things that work.

Lucy is looking forward to seeing some familiar faces; to see families she has taught now with kids of their own, the shop feels like a continuation of her career in education. There’s a fresh buzz on Chatsworth Road as two familiar faces settle into their stylish new home at number 416. Long-time friends Lauren Yates and Jo Weston (pictured) have joined forces to create a welcoming beauty and aesthetics space that already feels right at home in the local community.

After relocating from 181 Chatsworth Road, where they worked alongside Lauren’s sister Elise, the duo have brought their loyal client base with them and they’re excited to welcome plenty of new faces too.

Step inside and you’ll find two spacious treatment rooms, with room to expand even further in the future. “We have WiFi, lights, flushing toilets and running water,” laughs Jo, underselling what is actually a beautifully refurbished space designed to make clients feel instantly comfortable.

Jo brings years of medical experience to the business. A qualified nurse since 2009 after training at the University of Derby’s Chesterfield campus, she began specialising in medical aesthetics in 2017 before eventually making the move into the industry full-time. As a nurse prescriber, Jo offers clients the reassurance of Page 14

professional medical expertise combined with a genuinely caring approach.

Her treatment menu is extensive, ranging from rejuvenating skin boosters and dermal fillers to treatments for lines and wrinkles.

She also offers advanced CO2 fractional laser treatments designed to improve skin tightening, resurfacing, pigmentation and scarring.

Alongside this, Jo provides collagen-stimulating treatments and professional skincare products including HydroPeptide.

Alongside Jo’s medical aesthetics expertise is Laurens’ passion for beauty and makeup artistry. After qualifying at Chesterfield College,

It was only Autumn last year when I last caught up with Kate (below) from Oculi Opticians on Chatsworth Road but as I've been chatting to Lucy, Jo and Lauren it felt only fitting that I check in at Oculi to catch up on the latest gossip.

Almost six years after opening in the middle of the pandemic, Oculi continues to grow thanks to its personal approach to eye care and strong community support.

Owner Kate Wain is proud of the business she has created over the last 6 years. “It’s really flown by, here we are nearly 6 years on still growing and really feeling a part of the community in Chesterfield.”

Central to that philosophy is time and personal care. Kate works alongside the same two optometrists, Kathie and Chris, who joined when the business opened in September 2020.

Appointments last an hour, allowing for detailed eye examinations using advanced equipment as well as time to discuss concerns and build relationships with patients.

“All aspects of the examination happen in one room with one person,” says Kate. “It’s about creating an experience where people feel understood and cared for. Patients become friends rather than customers and it makes

This month marks two years since Soresby Street Café first opened its doors, and what a journey it’s been for owner Jamie and the team.

The popular independent café has become a firm favourite with locals, thanks to its relaxed atmosphere, flexible menu and genuinely welcoming approach. Now, the business is becoming even more of a family affair, with Jamie’s partner Becks stepping away from her NHS career to join the café full time. And there’s even more exciting news for the couple, as Becks is also expecting their first child in September. Congratulations to you both from everyone at S40 & S41 Local!

With summer just around the corner, Soresby Street Café is introducing a range of seasonal menu updates. Fresh summer salads are making an appearance alongside a tempting selection of new small plates, perfect for lighter lunches or relaxed catch-ups with friends.

There are also new sandwiches, burgers and dirty fries on the menu, while the expanded children’s menu means even the fussiest little eaters should find something they’ll enjoy. And if you fancy trying something different, there’s always the daily special waiting to surprise you.

Jamie was keen to thank the customers who’ve supported the café over the last two years.

“So many customers have become friends,” he said. “We love seeing regulars coming back through the door, and there's always a warm welcome for new customers too.”

That customer-first attitude is clearly at the heart of everything they do. During our visit, the team had just popped next door to a charity shop to buy an extra cushion to make a customer more comfortable, a small gesture that says a lot about the atmosphere they’ve created.

The café is also fully licensed and available for private hire, making it an ideal spot for intimate family celebrations, christenings, birthdays and special occasions. If you’re planning an event, simply call in for a chat with the team.

For years, Chesterfield has battled a reputation problem. Mention the town to anyone and the same stereotypes often appear: empty shops, neglected buildings, nothing for young people to do. Yet the reality is far more complicated.

Chesterfield today is not a town in decline, but one in transition – balancing its proud history with the opportunities that modern life brings.

With a median age close to the national average, Chesterfield stays home to a broad mix of generations. However, many young residents feel the town lacks excitement compared with nearby cities such as Sheffield or Nottingham. Over time, this perception has helped shape the image of Chesterfield as somewhere people eventually leave behind.

But is this reputation deserved? While the town centre has undoubtedly changed over the last two decades, Chesterfield is far from the “ghost town” it is sometimes portrayed as. In fact, many residents argue that the town’s strongest qualities are often overlooked simply because they have become so familiar to us.

The Crooked Spire alone brings visitors from across the UK every year. But Chesterfield’s identity extends beyond its famous church. Its location, positioned between major cities and on the edge of the Peak District, gives both residents and tourists access to the countryside while having strong transport links.

The criticism aimed at small towns is not unique to Chesterfield. Across the country, changing shopping habits, online retail, and the lasting effects of the pandemic have reshaped high streets. Chain stores that once dominated town centres have gradually disappeared, often leaving behind derelict buildings which create an impression of decline, not to mention being an eyesore.

Local business owners say the community spirit remains one of Chesterfield’s greatest assets.

Cheryl Knowles, owner of Eclectic Delights of Serendipity in the town centre, believes that change is inevitable in towns, but it is important to hold onto the strong communities that we have within the town. Corey Lavender of Vanishing Point Records believes that the town has unfairly been given a reputation of being dull or outdated. Since opening his business 9 years ago, he has seen how supportive the local community can be, particularly in the music scene. He sees the community of local businesses as “working together to make Chesterfield better”, emphasising the important part that local businesses play in the regeneration of Chesterfield.

Chesterfield has a surprisingly rich musical history, with major artists from the 60s and 70s performing here at their height. Although many residents associate Sheffield more with live music culture, independent shops and markets continue to attract passionate audiences and help maintain the creative identity that Chesterfield has always had.

Attitudes towards town centres have changed nationally. Increasingly, people are looking for experience rather than simply convenience.

Independent cafés, specialist shops, and local services offer something online shopping cannot – personal interaction and a sense of community. This shift may ultimately work in Chesterfield's favour.

Gavin Grainger, owner of Bottle and Thyme, OTI interiors and Elder Wine, believes the future of the town centre depends on a balance between larger chains (drawing people in initially) and independent businesses (creating the distinct personality of the town).

This sense of identity matters deeply to local residents, particularly at a time when many British towns struggle to define themselves after years of social and economic change. Chesterfield’s market heritage remains central to its identity, even as the town evolves. Understandably, residents miss the busy high streets of the ‘old’ Chesterfield, however it is important to recognise that modern town centres must serve different purposes.

Many of the negative views surrounding the town come from a nostalgia for a version of Chesterfield that no longer exists. Like countless towns across Britain, we have had to adapt to economic changes, shifting consumer habits and the long-term impacts of COVID-19. The market-based high street feel may never fully return to how it was, but this is not a sign of failure.

For residents who have seen the town change over several decades, Chesterfield today can feel both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.

Some landmarks and traditions remain untouched, while other aspects of the town have completely transformed.

Chesterfield is not a perfect town, and very few residents would claim otherwise. Yet it is also not the hopeless place that people sometimes suggest.

Beneath the headlines about empty shops and struggling high streets is a town with a strong sense of identity, resilient local businesses, and communities dedicated to the future of the town.

At the end of the day, people continue to stay in Chesterfield for a reason. And even those who leave often find their way back.

If you’ve never been to a Hūs Party! Well you haven’t exactly missed dozens, there have only been two! But If you’re someone who genuinely enjoys listening to live performance and not just having it pulse in the background while you shout over a drink, then this is very much your kind of night.

A small, intimate setting with all the charm of a 1970s lounge, a touch of cabaret club, and the cosiness of a loft space. The second Hūs Party offered a line-up that included, poet Kate Burns, vocal collective Doe Lea Voices, and local folk trio Martha Hegarty and the Midnight Sea,

'this was an evening where curiosity paid off.'

Poetry, Paint and Fairy Folk: First up was Kate Burns, her set immediately establishing the thoughtful, intimate tone of the evening. Her opening poem explored her relationship with painting, drawing parallels between canvas and paint, and the natural pairing of soil and water.

From there, she shifted into The Sidhe, a piece inspired by Irish folklore and the mysterious Fairy People, before delivering one of her current favourites, Women in the Walls. The standout moment of her set: a meditation on the countless women who came before us, who touched the same stones and walls, leaving traces of themselves behind.

A brief political jab added edge, before People of Chesterfield, a commissioned work for an upcoming heritage trail brought things back home. And yes, Chesterfield’s dream of an ice rink gets a mention.

Not a Choir and Proud of It: Next came Doe Lea Voices: five women joined by Rich on guitar, all of whom meet regularly at the Doe Lea Centre. Keen to make one thing clear, they introduced themselves with a smile: ‘We are not a choir.’

Their performance was warm, unpretentious, and refreshingly human. There may have been a few opening nerves, but they quickly settled into the room’s laid-back rhythm. Smiles spread across faces, both on stage and in the audience as their harmonies filled the space.

Their rendition of Sweet Child o’ Mine, elevated by the surprising addition of hand chimes, was playful, memorable, and slightly Christmassy, despite it being April.

Folk Sounds and Big Atmosphere: After enthusiastic applause, the headline act took to the stage: Laura Hegarty and the Midnight Sea. This three-piece, Laura on vocals and guitar, Steve on accordion and Shruti Box, and Neil on drums, proved that a small group can create an expansive sound.

Their opening track, Kinder Scout, inspired by the historic trespass, set the mood beautifully.

From there, the audience was drawn into an extensive and immersive setlist, each song introduced by atmospheric soundscapes that gently carried listeners into the next piece.

For anyone newly converted to folk music or perhaps after discovering a certain BBC favourite like Detectorists, this was a reminder of just how captivating the genre can be.

Songs like Last Night I Dreamt I Fired My Deathray Again immediately sparked intrigue through title alone, while Redwood, written on a train in Canada, offered a deeply personal moment.

And the Shruti Box - a fascinating floor-mounted instrument operated by foot, producing a rich drone beneath the lead instruments. The sound

sat surprisingly well alongside the electronic textures of the recorded intros, creating a blend that felt both ancient and modern.

The result? A set received with genuine warmth and admiration.

More Than Just a Gig: What makes events like this special is the intention behind them.

Open Hūs is a Community Interest Group, fully independent and funded solely through ticket sales and room hire. There’s no corporate backing, no overblown production, just a simple, thoughtfully used space bringing people together to share music, poetry, and ideas.

That spirit was evident throughout the night.

From community singers performing for a community audience, to artists given room to create and connect, the whole evening felt rooted and meaningful.

So, after a couple of hours spent in great company and immersed in memorable performances, one phrase kept coming to mind: music to listen to.

This wasn’t about dancing in a packed, sweaty club to a relentless beat. It was about sitting with sound, absorbing the words and appreciating the time, craft, and emotion that artists put into what they create.

That’s what a Hūs Party delivers.

If future events are anything like this one, it’s well worth keeping an eye on Open Hūs for upcoming gigs, and if you’re ever in need of a unique venue for an event or workshop, they may just have the perfect space.

Phoenix Rising: Chesterfield's Concert Band Marks 25 Musical Years Saturday 4 July St John's Church, Walton Phoenix Concert Band, based in Chesterfield, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special Birthday Concert on Saturday 4 July at 3pm at St John’s Church in Walton.

Founded in 2001 providing opportunities for local adult wind, brass and percussion players, the community ensemble is a thriving group of nearly 50 musicians under Musical Directors: Geraint Jones, George Morton and Matt Appleyard.

The anniversary programme, chosen by band members, includes favourites from Les Misérables, The Lion King, Fiddler on the Roof, The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Hi Everyone, We will be opening the garden again this year on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June 2026 from 10:30am to 5pm, for local charities.

As usual, our entrance fee is £4 per person. Children get in free and all other costs for refreshments stay the same, with plants for sale.

PLEASE NOTE: This will be the only weekend we will open to the public this year, we will not open as we have other years, during August. If you are a private garden group, please message me separately regarding private view dates.

Peddler Market Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 June Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 August New Square, Chesterfield Chesterfield Market will be buzzing with music and award-winning street food this summer as Peddler Market returns to the town for two weekend events.

Now regeneration works have been completed the popular street food market will be returning to New Square for two weekends as above. Expect to find a great selection of street food traders, music, craft drinks and a selection of unique market stalls.

Jordan Roberts, Co-Founder of Peddler Market said: “We’re so happy to be planning events in Chesterfield again, especially in the newly developed square. It was so busy last time and our traders haven’t stopped asking when they can come back. We’ll be bringing some of our top traders with us to create the Peddler vibe that will make you want to hang out all day.”

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The Peddler Market events in 2023 and 2024 were really popular and I’m delighted that we can welcome them back to the town this year now that our works in New Square are complete. Nik Kershaw Thursday 9 July 2026 Foundry Sheffield

Six in 26 - a micro anniversary tour - Nik Kershaw and his Band embark on a limited run of shows to mark his 50 years as a responsible adult.

Also known as "the no particular reason we can think of, tour” and “the why the Hell not, tour”.

Born Nicholas David Kershaw on 1st March 1958 in Bristol, he grew up in Ipswich where he discovered his love for music. His father was an architect and flautist in the town’s orchestra and his mother trained as an opera singer.

He describes himself as a late developer, first picking up a guitar when he was 15, as a result of watching a TV documentary on David Bowie.

He signed with MCA Records in 1983 and, in the September of the same year, "I Won't Let The Sun Go Down" was released for the first time, reaching a respectable No.47 in the UK charts (achieving a rather more respectable No. 2 when re-released the following summer). This was followed in January 1984 by "Wouldn't It Be good" which languished gracefully at No.4 in the UK charts for five weeks and was to break Kershaw worldwide. The seminal “Human Racing” album was released in March and achieved platinum sales in many territories.

After one of the driest springs on record, gardens are already showing signs of stress – and so might Chesterfield’s gardeners. But don’t panic: there’s still plenty you can do to keep things thriving while conserving water and supporting local wildlife.

What to do this month 1. Weed regularly – Weeds are thriving currently, so remove them before they set seed. Hoeing is effective in dry conditions.

2. Thin fruit – Help your fruit trees put energy into quality rather than quantity. Thin apples to one fruit per cluster, with about 15cm between; pears can be two per cluster.

Plums benefit from more generous thinning – around 8cm apart.

3. Support thirsty containers – Pots dry out rapidly. Grouping them together can create a microclimate and reduce evaporation.

Use mulch to retain moisture. Water early morning or evening, and soak thoroughly when you do.

4. Delay planting out if needed – Summer bedding and tender can go in, but only if you’re ready to water them properly in the first few weeks. If not, wait until rain is forecast. When planting, fill the hole with water and let it drain first, then mulch.

5. Dead-head – Keep roses and perennials going with regular dead-heading.

6. Shade and vent greenhouses – Even in the UK, greenhouse temperatures can soar in June. Use shading, open vents and doors, and consider a water tray on the floor to increase humidity.

7. Sow succession crops – It’s not too late to sow salads, carrots, beetroot, and French beans.

8. Prune spring shrubs and soft fruit – Gooseberries, currants, and springflowering shrubs can be pruned now to shape and encourage healthy regrowth before fruiting.

9. Tend your lawn lightly – Consider raising the cutting height and leaving clippings to shade the soil. If it's brown, leave it – lawns usually bounce back when rain returns.

10. Care for houseplants too – Move them out of direct sun, check them twice weekly for watering, and feed fortnightly – ideally with organic liquid feeds.

Support wildlife • Keep birdbaths and shallow dishes of water topped up.

• Leave some long grass or log piles for beetles and other beneficial insects.

• Avoid chemical use: beneficial insects (and pets) are particularly vulnerable in hot weather.
