Hi and welcome to the April edition.

A huge thanks to Tomo for this edition's fabulous cover, we've even broken our layout rules and gone full page with it. We simply love it. Read the article on page six to find out more about Tomo and what inspired this piece.

What's also struck me is how much stuff is going on around the town, there are so many events to seek out and it's just a pleasure to see. Check out our pages and fill out the calendar for April... A little further ahead I'm looking forward to the Steam Punk Weekend scheduled for July. A couple of personal dates for me over the next few weeks. Firstly, S40 Local reaches 17 years of age so on page 14 there are 165 covers showing all the editions. There has been so much from you, the community, shared events, local info and many adverts placed with us for which I am so grateful.

165, is a strange number to celebrate but we started out planning to do every month and quickly realised you can't do this on your own so decided to go with ten a year. Also we had Covid so this stopped production for a few months whilst we had to down tools.

The second event I have to celebrate is a very personal one as I reach the grand old(ish) age of 60! I know, who'd have thought it?

And to celebrate (and cause much laughter) I've included a picture of myself aged about ten, it's probably at a wedding I'm attending. Just check out that tie and jacket combo, what a statement.

Remember to change your clocks, enjoy this edition and I'll see you again in five weeks.

For this issue’s front cover, we caught up with illustrator and designer Tomo, also known as Katie Thompson, to chat about growing up on a farm near Sheffield, discovering animation through YouTube, and how her work at Sparky Ink continues to shape her creative path.

Tomo studied Graphic Design at Loughborough University after completing a foundation degree at Chesterfield College. Like many creatives, she didn’t start with a rigid career plan. Instead, she followed curiosity and a lifelong interest in storytelling and drawing.

“I always knew I wanted to do something creative,” she says. “When I was younger,

I wanted to be a writer. I used to hand little stories into my teachers every week.”

She grew up on a pig farm in Moss Valley, just outside Sheffield, where her family run Moss Valley Fine Meats. Farming life was a big part of her childhood, but she quickly realised it probably wasn’t the career path for her.

“Farming is really hard work,” she laughs. “Art is also a lot of work, but it’s my work.”

Creativity stood out in a family largely rooted in science and agriculture. “Most of my family studied science at university,” she explains. “I was kind of the creative one. But my mum’s side had a lot of artisans, so maybe it came from there.”

Her real turning point came as a teenager discovering animation online. “At school, art is usually taught as fine art, realism, abstract work, things you see in galleries. I didn’t really realise that drawing cartoons or animation was something you could actually do as a career.”

After discovering animated YouTube content in her mid-teens, she became hooked. “I realised

people were making animated stories and cartoons online, and that you could actually create characters and worlds like that. I started practising constantly after that.”

That passion eventually led her towards graphic design rather than pure animation. The decision was partly practical. “Animation is a very specialised industry and extremely competitive. I chose a broader graphic communication course so I could build design skills alongside illustration and animation. It meant I had more options.”

Those options paid off when she landed a placement at Sparky Ink, a creative studio that works with autistic and disabled young people, and adults through creative workshops. What began as a placement turned into a full-time role after graduation.

“I absolutely love working there,” she says. “Because it’s a small team and I’m the main designer, I get a lot of creative freedom. I can experiment with ideas and help shape the brand,” smiles Katie.

The studio runs creative sessions, coding clubs and workshops designed to make creativity accessible to everyone. It’s work Tomo finds particularly rewarding.

Outside of her day job she keeps busy with illustration projects, volunteering and community art. She has volunteered at Manchester Animation Festival and helped design materials for community events and festivals in Sheffield.

“Animation is actually quite a small industry,” she says. “When you go to events like that you realise everyone kind of knows everyone. It’s really inspiring to see the work people are doing.”

Her artistic influences range widely, from classic painters to modern animation artists. She cites storyboard artist Kevin Molina Ortiz as a big inspiration for his dynamic drawing style, which feels almost like watching animation frame by frame. She also loves the expressive work of Van Gogh and the storytelling found in animated films and series. Those influences helped shape the design for this issue’s front cover. For the Tolkien fans

"I didn’t really realise that drawing cartoons or animation was something you could actually do as a career.”

reading, can you spot the homage paid to The Hobbit in the artwork?

“I wanted to represent Chesterfield in spring, something colourful and imaginative,” she explains. “When people think of the town they usually think of the Crooked Spire, but I didn’t want to just draw that again.”

Instead, Tomo looked to the Shambles area of the town for inspiration, reimagining the historic street with a slightly fantastical twist.

“The buildings already have a medieval feel, so I leaned into that,” she says. “I added little fantasy elements, almost like something from a storybook, to make the town feel more playful and alive.”

The result is a vibrant piece that blends local architecture with Tomo’s love of animation and storytelling.

For Tomo, the future is less about rigid plans and more about continuing to say yes to opportunities.

“The creative industry can be unpredictable,” she says. “I tend to say yes to things and see where they lead. That’s how most of the best opportunities happen.”

And if this striking cover is anything to go by, it’s a philosophy that’s working just fine. @ktomoart

A Tale of Two Markets

More than just a place to shop

Words: Stevie Moor

Images: Adobe & Simon Paterson

Asian culture has never been more visible in the Western world. From K-Pop dominating the charts, to Netflix overflowing with anime and global hits like Squid Game, and films such as K-Pop Demon Hunters, it’s clear that many of us in Gen Z feel a real connection to, and passion for these cultures.

With that in mind, I found myself asking an unexpected question: what does a traditional Korean market have in common with the newly renovated Chesterfield Marketplace?

Turns out... far more than you might think.

Tongin market in South Korea and Chesterfield market are both welcoming places, perfect for a friendly chat, a cheeky bargain, and some delicious food to share. Half a world apart, these two markets have been running for years, embracing tradition in vastly different ways.

One of Chesterfields longest running traditions is the distinctive Flea Market every Thursday. You never know what might be on sale pre-owned: Hand painted pottery, fine China, vintage clothes and jewellery. It's a great place to spend time and find a one-of-a-kind artefact for your home!

Similarly, Tongin market is a perfect way to get a unique experience of Korean culture through food and people. The compact space of narrow alleyways offers an array of experiences such as stalls selling traditional Korean clothes (Hanbok), made with fine silks and colourful fabrics. However, their main feature is the famous ‘Lunchbox’ dining experience.

Customers pay 5,000 Won (about £2.50), for a handful of brass coins, which they can exchange with various vendors for handmade street food, recipes of which have been handed down for generations. Locals and tourists alike grab a handy reusable lunchbox which they can fill with anything they wish, from tteokbokki, (chewy rice cakes grilled in a sweet-spicy sauce), to dalgona, (fruit candies).

Tongin market may be thousands of miles away, but the warm buzz of a busy space and the simple joy of good food is instantly familiar. Back in Chesterfield, the stalls and friendly faces offer a similar comfort, whether it's browsing home accessories, picking up fresh fruit and veg, or grabbing a classic sausage sandwich; any day can be brightened by a simple trip to town.

In 2025, the International Food Market in Chesterfield was a huge hit, offering a blend of dishes from France, Spain, and Lithuania, bringing a variety of unique cultural identities from around the world into our humble town centre. It is said that a lot more Korean food will be introduced to the International Food event in June 2026, so make sure to have your calendar free!

I have many memories of cruising the market as a child with my parents and coming away with a bit of treasure. I still walk through the market most weekends and am happy to see it still bustling with happy customers. This well-known and comforting routine is, for many, what makes the locals proud to be a part of the Chesterfield community by celebrating many different cultures as a part of their own.

A new drive aims to increase the number of traders at Chesterfield’s revamped market

Words & Images: CBC

Budding entrepreneurs are being encouraged to trade on Chesterfield’s newly revamped outdoor market with the launch of a new campaign.

The regeneration of Chesterfield’s historic market is nearing completion and there has never been a better time to join the vibrant community of traders. With an introductory rate of just £10 for new traders, fantastic facilities and no long-term contract, the market provides a flexible way for local businesses to start and grow.

A new campaign aims to promote these benefits across the region and show budding entrepreneurs how Chesterfield Markets can provide them with a low-risk opportunity to start a new business, grow an existing business or connect with new customers.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We already have a fantastic range of well-established traders at Chesterfield Markets but with work on our regeneration project completing we want to start the next chapter with more traders offering a wider variety of products.

“Our market stalls are some of the most competitively priced in the region and traders can benefit from new stalls with better facilities. You’ll also have access to support from our experienced markets team and through our trader network.

“We’ve seen some great independent businesses start on Chesterfield Markets before growing and moving into permanent premises around the town centre – now is a fantastic time to try out your retail idea and our market is here to provide the perfect space to do it.”

Work across Chesterfield Markets has included the development of a new stall design, which provides a traditional trading platform but new heritage style canvasses with weatherproof features. All stalls also have access to utilities. Together these improvements help modernise and enhance the experience for traders and visitors.

A new layout on the main square improves visibility for traders based in the centre of the market and helps guide shoppers to all the stalls.

New paving and re-laid cobbles help maintain the historic charm whilst also improving accessibility.

The introductory rate applies to the first four visits to the general market (Monday, Friday, and Saturday), after these visits stalls on Monday and Friday are £12.60 and Saturday stalls are £19.70.

Stall prices are set to change from April 2026, with the completion of the market a new zoning system is being introduced, throughout the regeneration works stalls have been discounted and a single flat price has been charged.

On Mondays and Fridays stalls in Zone A will cost £17.20 and £27.80 on Thursdays and Saturdays. Stalls in Zone B will cost £22.20 on Thursdays and Saturdays and £14.40 on Mondays and Fridays.

The Kidz Lounge

A Safe Place for Your Children

Words: Paul Chapman

Image: The Kidz Lounge

"...children deserve a space where they can feel safe, happy, and free to be themselves.”

When two local childminders and long time working mums, Jo and Nicky opened the doors to Kidzlounge in September 2022, they weren’t just launching a before and after school club, they were creating a community hub built on friendship, experience, and a shared passion for supporting families.

After more than a decade working with children across the area, the pair spotted an opportunity to bring something special to Westfield Infant School and Old Hall Junior Schools. What began as a small idea between friends has quickly grown into a thriving wraparound provision supporting over 100 families from both Westfield and Old Hall.

At the heart of Kidzlounge is a simple belief: children deserve a space where they can feel safe, happy, and free to be themselves. This is clear when you step inside to find a warm, friendly environment buzzing with creativity and play. The dedicated team brings energy and care to every session, ensuring each child is welcomed with a smile and supported throughout their time at Kidzlounge.

The before school Breakfast Club offers a calm, nourishing start to the day, while after school sessions provide a chance to unwind with a tasty snack and a wide range of activities. From arts and crafts to imaginative play, building challenges, games, and outdoor adventures in their secure play area, there’s always something to spark curiosity and joy.

What makes Kidzlounge truly stand out is the atmosphere Jo and Nicky have nurtured. It’s a safe place, the walking bus running between schools allows the young children to form friendships, it’s a place where parents feel reassured, and where staff genuinely love what they do.

In just a few short years, Kidzlounge has become more than a wraparound service, it’s an essential part of the school day and a lifeline for busy families.

If you are interested in your child attending Kidzlounge please get in touch and if you are wondering about getting involved hands on, the small team have vacancies for two playworkers to join the team, see the advert opposite for details. It’s great to see Kidzlounge flourishing and with Jo and Nicky at the helm, its future looks every bit as bright as the smiles it inspires each day.

Ashgate Hospice

A charity in Chesterfield's heart

Text & Images: Ashgate Hospice

Ashgate Hospice has been caring for local people through illness, death and grief for nearly four decades. Here’s why it's work matters now more than ever.

Most of us prefer not to think too far ahead about death, dying or serious illness. Life is busy, and these are conversations we often put off until we have no choice but to face them. But when illness changes everything, knowing that calm, skilled and compassionate support is there can make all the difference.

For people across North Derbyshire, that support is Ashgate Hospice.

Founded in 1988 to serve the local community, Ashgate provides specialist palliative and end of life care for adults living with a life-limiting or incurable illness, as well as support for the people important to them.

But a hospice is far more than just a building, it's about meeting people where they are, physically and emotionally, and helping them live as well as possible for as long as possible. What hospice care really means: A common misconception is that hospice care is only for the very last days of life. In reality, Ashgate supports people much earlier, often from the point of diagnosis.

Most of Ashgate’s care takes place in people’s homes and communities. Specialist nurses, doctors and therapists work with GPs, district nurses and other professionals to manage symptoms, reduce distress and help people stay in familiar surroundings wherever possible. Ashgate offers a wide range of support services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, lymphoedema care, social work and spiritual care. This holistic approach recognises that serious illness affects every part of life, not just the body.

Last year alone, Ashgate supported over 2,600 local patients and the people important to them. Funded by the community, for the community: Despite providing essential healthcare, Ashgate is a charity. Less than a third of our income comes from NHS funding, and that proportion is reducing year on year.

The rest must be raised through the generosity of the local community – through donations, fundraising events, charity shops, the weekly lottery, gifts in wills and countless hours volunteered.

Demand for hospice care is growing as the population ages and more people live longer with complex conditions. Like many hospices across the country, Ashgate must find new, sustainable ways to fund it's care while staying true to it's values.

One part of that future-focused approach is Ashgate Wellness Services.

Introducing Ashgate Wellness Services: Ashgate Wellness Services brings together paid-for counselling, bereavement support and complementary therapies under one umbrella. These services draw on Ashgate’s specialist expertise in death, dying, grief and wellbeing, while being open to people who may never need hospice care.

The counselling service offers specialist support before or after someone important to you has died, or while living with a life-limiting diagnosis. Sessions are delivered by trained professionals who work with death and grief every day, offering a safe, confidential space to talk openly and without judgement. Support is available in person, by phone or online, and is open to adults across the UK.

Ashgate Wellness Services includes bereavement support groups and drop-in

sessions, offered for a suggested donation. Providing a welcoming space for people to meet others who understand grief, share experiences, or simply listen. Groups are facilitated and shaped by those attending, recognising grief is personal and there are no right ways to experience it.

Alongside counselling and bereavement support, Ashgate Wellness Services offers a range of complementary therapies designed to support both mind and body. These include massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, Reiki, guided relaxation and gentle yoga practices such as Yoga Nidra and restorative yoga. Treatments are delivered by experienced therapists in a calm, welcoming setting at Ashgate Hospice. Sessions are always tailored to the individual, with time taken beforehand to understand health needs and what someone hopes to gain from the treatment.

Looking ahead: Everything Ashgate does starts with people – those living with serious illness, the people important to them, and the community that makes this care possible.

By combining expert, compassionate care with sustainable funding approaches like Ashgate Wellness Services, Ashgate is working to ensure it remains here for generations to come.

Because one day, every one of us will need care, comfort or support through death, dying or grief. And when that time comes, having a hospice rooted in its community, with compassion at its heart, makes all the difference.

Fiction & Fantasy

Good Enough To Die For

Images: Biblico

Following last edition's dive into two of my list of the best mysteries I read last year, I follow up with two more excellent Titles. So grab that cosy blanket and a hot drink and get ready for your next recommendations.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd Agatha Christie

Being one of Christie’s lesser known Poirot stories it means that one of the greatest plot twists in crime fiction is still to be discovered. After the murder of Roger Ackroyd newly retired Hercule Poirot is hired to traverse the maze of alibis and motives. Yet this murder isn’t the only mystery surrounding its history, just months after the books release, the infamous disappearance of Christie occurred with many still speculating its true cause, some even turning to supernatural conspiracies.

‘The Murder of Roger Ackroyd’ follows the old conventions of crime, the small town of King’s Abbot creates claustrophobia and tension as a killer runs free, as well as blackmail, betrayal and the mysterious locked door convention, a feature a good crime lover will know all too well. If you want to know more however, then I suggest reading it. There’s not much more I can say without spoiling it, this book is the perfect example of Christie’s brilliance, a traditional and yet modern atmosphere that any lover of crime should become obsessed with.

Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief

Rick Riordon

This is a triumph of all things mythology. If you thought, you knew the basics of the God’s get ready to know all of their dirty secrets and gossip away. You join Percy Jackson on his first quest. Percy is relatable, he knew he had always been different and until his experience

at Camp Half-blood where he bonds with Annabeth Chase - a daughter of Athena - and Grover Underwood, a satire, he had expected to be the black sheep for the rest of his life. Together, the trio set off in search of Zeus’ Lightning Bolt, its disappearance threatening a catastrophic war, many monsters and Gods standing in their way; Hermes, Ares and even Medusa. But despite all the enemies that seek to stop them, a force of support is a constant weapon. The book itself is full of tension, humour and the nostalgic atmosphere that only a great adventure can give you. It easily earns its place besides the greats, move over Harry Potter, Percy Jackson is claiming the top spot. Now, if monsters and Gods isn’t enough to convince you, then maybe the friendship will. ‘The real treasure is the friends you make along the way’, it’s a cliché, I know, but it’s heartwarming. The connection between the characters is unlike anything I’ve read before, so real, so relatable and so funny. Many a time did I laugh out loud during their interactions and many a time did I receive a weird look from the other people on the bus as I did, but it was so worth it.

Now, I’ll admit, you are likely to see this book in the young readers section, but that doesn’t mean you’ll enjoy it any less. A lot of adult books nowadays are full of too much romance and thinking anyway, it’s nice to take a break and reclaim your childish sense of adventure back. I didn’t enjoy it any less and I doubt you will too.

If you want an electrifying experience full of adventure, mythology and humour, then Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief is everything you can imagine and so much more!

New Aparthotel

Former Wilko store set to become 70-unit aparthotel

Words & Images: CBC

Chesterfield Borough Council have approved proposals to transform a former Wilko store in our town centre into a new aparthotel complex featuring serviced apartments, retail units, a gym and a business centre.

The vacant Wilko store, located on Vicar Lane and South Street, closed in October 2023 after the retailer entered administration.

Members of Council’s planning committee voted by a majority at a meeting held at the Town Hall on February 23 to approve JBSL Holdings Ltd’s application. The scheme will see the former homeware and hardware store extended and converted into a 70-unit aparthotel.

The development will bring a significant number of accommodation units into the historic core of the town centre, offering a central base for visitors heading to the Peak District National Park.

The plans include a two-storey rooftop extension across most of the building, along with alterations to the existing elevations. The lower ground floor level, proposals include two retail units, a gym, a business centre.

The ground floor would accommodate two retail units fronting Vicar Lane and nine aparthotel units. A further 21 units are planned for the first floor, 20 on the second floor and another 20 on the third floor.

April's Tips...

For a sustainable garden

Words: Transition Chesterfield & Inspire Community Garden

Image by Zoe Richardson on Unsplash

By the time you read this, spring should be in full swing. However, the unpredictability of it all means we must remain adaptable, for the sake of our gardens and our own comfort. Here’s how to make the most of your garden this spring while keeping sustainability in mind.

1. Plant Potatoes Early potatoes should already be in the ground, but if the weather has been particularly cold, you may still have time. Maincrop potatoes can be planted around mid-April but remember they will need protecting from late frosts.

2. Sow Vegetables Hardy vegetables, such as carrots, beetroot, and parsnips, can be sown directly into the soil now. Check seed packets for specific timings.

3. Buying Baby Plants If growing from seed feels daunting, garden centres will have plenty of vegetable seedlings available. However, these have been grown in controlled conditions, so they need to be hardened off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before planting out.

4. Start Tender Crops Indoors Warm-season crops like tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, and squashes can be started indoors now in a windowsill or conservatory.

5. Sow For Wildlife Now is the time to sow hardy annuals like calendula and cornflowers. Choose native wildflowers and nectar-rich blooms to support pollinators. Perennials like lavender and echinacea are excellent sustainable choices, requiring less maintenance and water in the long run.

6. Pruning To Do Some fruit trees and shrubs, such as gooseberries and plums, should be pruned now rather than in winter. Many late-flowering shrubs, like buddleia and fuchsia, also benefit from spring pruning to encourage healthy new growth. Research the needs of each plant before cutting to ensure optimal results.

7. Pruning To Leave Delay trimming any hedges now until the nesting season ends in August.

8. Lawn Care Lawns will start growing more quickly now and may need regular mowing. Keep cuts higher to encourage strong roots and retain moisture.

9. Weeding Weeding is essential as some species set seed early. However, be mindful—some ‘weeds’ like dandelions and nettles provide vital food for pollinators and wildlife. Go for selective weeding rather than blanket removal to keep things balanced.

10. Mulching Mulching with homemade compost is one of the best ways to nourish your garden and retain moisture. or a sustainable, peat-free organic fertiliser.

For more advice on sustainable gardening or to meet like-minded growers, visit Inspire Community Garden on Wednesdays (1-3pm) or Sundays (10-3pm).

Everyone for Tennis

A lasting legacy for the entire community

Words: Simon Paterson

Images: Simon Paterson & Tim Caulder

Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club is proud to unveil its fully redeveloped clubhouse, officially opened on Saturday 28th February during this year’s annual awards celebration. The transformation has been made possible through a remarkably generous donation from the estate of Sheila Glister, a lifelong player, supporter and ambassador for the club.

Honouring Sheila Glister

Sheila represented the Chesterfield first team and the Derbyshire Ladies team for several decades, demonstrating both talent and unwavering commitment to the sport. Even after moving away from the area, she continued to represent the club, reflecting her deep loyalty and passion for Chesterfield.

A Modern Coffee Shop Experience

Her legacy donation has enabled a complete redevelopment of the clubhouse and its offering. Following several months of building work, the venue has been redesigned to look and feel like a modern coffee shop, warm, welcoming and contemporary.

The new clubhouse blends tennis with a modern café-culture feel; barista coffee, craft beers, and vibes straight from the city streets. Members and visitors can enjoy beer on tap, a variety of hot and cold food options, cakes and sweet treats, and an impressive coffee machine serving flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos, all at prices below the current market rate. The refurbishment ensures the clubhouse is not just a sporting facility, but a vibrant social hub for the wider community.

Volunteer Committee Dedication

The project has been carefully overseen by the club’s volunteer committee, who gave countless hours to ensure Sheila’s donation was invested wisely. Wherever possible, materials and services were sourced locally, keeping money in the community while ensuring the refurbishment delivers long-term value for members.

Victoria Oates, Chair of Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club, said: "This redevelopment is a landmark moment for our club. Sheila’s generosity has allowed us to create a space

that truly reflects who we are, welcoming, inclusive and forward-thinking. Our volunteer committee has worked tirelessly to ensure every penny is spent wisely, and we are incredibly proud of what has been achieved. The new clubhouse not only enhances the experience for our members but opens our doors even wider to the local community."

Enhancing the Club Experience

The grand opening formed part of the club’s annual awards celebration, bringing together members past and present to honour achievements on court while marking an exciting new chapter off it.

While the club already boasts three indoor tarmac courts, three outdoor artificial grass courts and four outdoor tarmac courts, several floodlit, the improved clubhouse significantly enhances the overall experience for players and visitors alike.

Tennis for Everyone

Beyond facilities, the club continues to champion the message that tennis is for everyone. With structured junior programmes, adult beginner sessions, social tennis and competitive league teams, there are opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to get involved. Whether picking up a racket for the first time or returning after years away, the club offers a supportive and inclusive environment.

The new clubhouse strengthens that inclusive ethos. Parents can now relax with quality coffee while children attend coaching sessions. Members can meet friends for a drink after matches. Visitors can drop in for refreshments even if they are not playing. The aim is simple: to create a community space that welcomes everyone.

Lasting Legacy

Sheila Glister’s generosity has left a lasting mark, not only in bricks and mortar, but in community spirit. Thanks to her legacy and the commitment of the volunteer committee, the club is now better equipped than ever to serve future generations.

For more information about membership, coaching programmes or court bookings, please contact Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club directly or visit the club to see the transformation first-hand.
