Intro Hi and welcome to our Winter 2026 edition.

I hope you've had a fab Christmas and New Year.

As we sit and think about 'intentions' for 2026, I'm going to ask one thing of you - think local.

Everything you read and enjoy in this magazine is thanks to the businesses that advertise with me, from someone having their first advert to the businesses that have been with us from the start, 164 editions ago.

For someone to advertise with me for 164 times they must get a good response. That response is down to you, reading through S40 Local and getting in touch when you want a new carpet, fancy a beer, need a new car or whatever it is that you need and use S40 Local to source it.

This year I'm going to try even harder to support the businesses around me, ones I can walk into and buy what I need over the counter.

I know it takes more time and it's not possible to get everything but it is worth it, and generally things work out about the same price, it can often feel that things are a little more when buying from an independent but across the year there won't be much difference. I'll try and buy just what I need as well, small local shops mean less waste.

There are some UK based brands I'll be supporting as well, saving to make one purchase that lasts rather than many that simply end up thrown out far too soon.

I'm looking forward to 2026, there are new ideas and projects to look into and there is so much happening locally I don't know where to start.

2025: Wrapped!

As the new year arrives online apps and services are sharing 'wrapped' threads telling me how many times I've 'listened to Phoebe Bridgers' or 'how many miles I cycled last year', Lidl have even shared what I bought!

It's an algorithm driven snapshot of your year from each of them.

However, Strava, Spotify wrapped and Simon's article on page 24 got me thinking. What if I did it manually and created an analogue version!

I've just scrolled through my photos from the past year and picked out a picture from each month.

The purpose - to create a 'personally curated wrap of 2025' that sums up my year. It's very much a selection of images that simply appeal to me rather than the best technical photos, and mostly taken on my old iPhone 6.

The resultant selection is shown, perhaps it's something you could do, reflect on 2025 and pick out those best memories.

Oh, and just to clarify, I've not subjected you to pics of my family, I love them dearly but I'll spare you those!

January: A ride in the snow, that's me heading to the bottom of Catholes, Holymoorside, in the first week of the new year.

February: I always enjoy Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the artwork on display is impressive and the landscaped park grounds and sculptures are a great place in which to walk and relax.

March: 'The Ernest' magazine I picked up in a Sheffield cafe, packed with interesting articles, a source of inspiration for what we do at S40 and S41 Local.

April: Charles Bridge in Prague early morning before it's crammed with tourists (like me).

May: The white Peugeot van converted and packed ready for my son's trip to Europe. A proud father moment after our eight weeks of labour - read more on page 52/4.

June: I love the BMW eMotorcycle, the CE 04 was spotted on the streets of Paris and I was imagining myself whizzing silently around the streets of Chesterfield.

July: The basket of fruit and veg kindly provided to me by the guys at the allotments off Rhodesia Road. I can still taste the sweet greengages.

August: A pizza and coffee at Hassop Station Cafe after a ride on the Monsal Trail before heading home.

September: The Cheese-grater Car Park. I've always loved this building since it appeared in Sheffield. Expensive to use, but it still looks great IMO. October: The sky out of the kitchen window one evening, simply stunning.

November: Slightly out of sync date wise but my daughter's 18th meal, the room decorated and fit for a princess and her friends.

December: Potato Man. This was one Potato...

I added some peppercorns and a carrot nose.

Zebra The end of an era Words: Paul Chapman

Zebra, one of Chesterfield's longest serving independent menswear fashion businesses, will be closing its doors for the last time in spring of this year.

After forty years its owner Stuart Smith has decided it's time to retire, "I think reaching our Ruby Anniversary is quite an achievement and I'm ready for a few more holidays and watching football on a Saturday," says Stuart. This is a positive story of an independent business surviving and thriving through the ups and downs that Chesterfield and the country has had to deal with over the years but as Stuart says, "I've loved every minute of it", and by the smile on his face you know he means it!

Stuart has witnessed many changes over the years, when he first opened in 1986 the emphasis was more on tailoring, young men wore suits, shirts and ties at the weekend whereas now it is much more casual. "In 1986 it was difficult to get a retail unit, there was so few available which is why Zebra ended up on Holywell Street," says Stuart.

For many of these years Stuart's right hand man, his manager Dave Towndrow, has been an important part of the Team. "We would like to thank everyone else who has been part of Zebra's story - the staff, suppliers, alteration people, window cleaners and everyone else who has supported us in giving first class service and quality fashion," says Stuart. "Most of all though we want to thank our customers, some of whom have been with us from the start.

Some have bought their wedding suits, their son's wedding suits, holiday clothes, casual gear, and everything in between.

"It's the customers that helped make our business successful and also made our journey as retailers such a pleasure, we've made many friends along the way, and you will all be missed."

So, one last ask; Stuart hopes people will ‘call in one last time’, not only to say goodbye, but to be part of the final chapter, one he wants to share with the people who made it possible in the first place.

From Mid-Wales to Oil Paints The Art of Linda Anstey Words: Simon Paterson Images: Linda Anstey

Linda Anstey grew up in Mid Wales, Powys, on a ten-acre smallholding. Sheep, cows, horses, sheepdogs, cats, the full rural line-up. An only child on a farm, but never boredd, not once.

When you’ve got space, animals and your own imagination, boredom doesn’t really stand a chance.

Art was always quietly present. Her dad was a natural draughtsman, producing architectural plans by hand, and her mum was endlessly creative, needlework, tapestry, anything that involved making something from nothing. One family project saw Linda and her father draw the local church, which her mother then turned into a full tapestry. Years later, after her father died, Linda donated it to the church and it’s still there.

At school she did O-Level art (passed), English and science (also passed), and failed just about everything else, which feels fairly standard for a lot of creative people. Art didn’t immediately become 'the' thing though, life and work intervened, making a living took priority.

When she was old enough, she left. London first, a bit of Dick Whittington energy, followed by time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen. She worked as an artist agent in London, booking folk acts and working out of Wimbledon Theatre. That’s where she met Mark, who had brought an American band over to the UK, but by the late 80s, Linda had relocated to Chesterfield.

Fast-forward a few decades and, like many stories, this one pivots in 2020.

COVID stopped the world. A local knitting group on Chatsworth Road stopped meeting. One of the women from that group, Elle Smith, an experienced artist, sent Linda some paper and pastels and said, essentially, 'have a go.' No pressure, and no expectations.

That small moment changed everything.

With encouragement, honest feedback, and a lot of 'no, keep going', Linda started drawing again. Photos of work were emailed back and forth, Linda thought most of it was rubbish.

Elle didn’t - and that mattered. From there it grew quickly, more materials, online tutorials, and daily practice. Eventually Linda joined the Wingerworth Art Group, a weekly gathering of artists working in every medium, oils, acrylics, pastels. Advice, borrowed materials, encouragement, and what Linda describes as 'proper therapy'.

Now, she paints every single day, if she doesn’t, it’s a sad one. Painting, varnishing, sketching, or simply 'fiddling about in the shed', it all counts. She retired last August, and art has become her reason for being (no offence Mark).

What’s striking is how quickly things developed, from restarting in 2020 to exhibitions, commissions, and sales within a few years.

Portraits of dogs, people, landscapes, one cactus painting sold to a couple who honeymooned in Arizona, proof that you never really know what will resonate with someone.

Art finds its people.

Linda doesn’t believe in 'talent' in the way most people mean it. She believes in practice, in

focus, in wanting to improve, in being willing to fail and try again. Snow paintings that looked, 'absolute pants' the first-time round. Early portraits she now winces at, even though the people who received them loved them.

Her process is deliberate, seeing an idea clearly at first, a horse on a cliff, a canyon with a river cutting through it, then research, gathering reference images (always with permission), and combining landscapes, memories, and imagination. She works mainly in oils, starting with gesso and charcoal or thinned paint before building up the piece.

One of her proudest moments came at a Wingerworth Art Group exhibition, around 250 pieces on display and with public voting - Linda came first. Elle Smith, the friend who first encouraged her, came second. Apprentice becomes the master (we all love Star Wars), though Elle still turns up with paper and ideas to try next week.

Linda’s advice to anyone thinking 'I can’t draw' is simple: try. Join a group if you can, use free tutorials if you can’t, don’t be afraid to be bad and be bad often - that’s how you get better.

As for what’s next? More painting, more commissions, maybe a few more sales... or maybe just a fuller studio. Either way, she’ll be painting tomorrow, and the day after that.

Her favourite piece is Autumn Whispers, an oil painting of a Welsh hillside near where her Auntie Shirley lives. Painted quickly over two days, it captures that moment when the leaves turn, and the light does something magical. It sold for £65, which seems criminal really.

Our Town

Investing in Chesterfield A town in transition Words: Simon Paterson Images: Destination Chesterfield

Heading in the right direction: Anyone who lives or works in Chesterfield knows that the town has been in a period of change for some time now. At the Casa Hotel, the annual Invest in Chesterfield event brought together local civic leaders, employers, educators, and placemakers to reflect on where we are and, more importantly, where we are heading.

From the outset, Destination Chesterfield Leader Dom Stevens set a confident and unapologetically long-term tone. The message was clear: Chesterfield isn’t changing by accident - it’s changing by design.

A snapshot of our high street: Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council, opened proceedings with a clear, data-led overview of the borough, grounding the conversation in facts rather than opinion.

Chesterfield currently has 423 retail spaces, with 55 vacant, around 1% better than the national average. Worth remembering when the high street becomes a hot topic on socials!

Huw was also quick to point out something many residents may not realise: a large proportion of town-centre properties are privately owned, meaning the council does not have direct control over how or when they are brought back into use.

There is genuine cause for optimism, footfall is increasing, which anyone who regularly walks through the town centre will have noticed.

However, around two-thirds of visitors come from lower-income households, highlighting an ongoing challenge for Chesterfield: how we attract people with more disposable income to visit, stay longer and spend money with our brilliant independent businesses.

Retail itself is evolving too. Where 25-year leases were once the norm, five-year terms are now far more common, a sign of a sector adapting to uncertainty rather than standing still. As Huw put it, movement and change are inevitable.

The council’s strategy reflects this reality.

Retail will be consolidated into a stronger, more coherent core around the Market Square, while surrounding streets are freed up for alternative uses. Plans include a new events square, improvements to Rykneld Square outside the Crooked Spire, and the £21m transformation of the Stephenson Memorial Hall, which many locals will already have seen taking shape.

Corporation Street is set to benefit from a new café and public-realm upgrades, the Northern Gateway offices on the Donut are fully occupied, and plans for a Southern Gateway are moving forward.

A consistent theme running through all of this is connection – physically and visually linking different parts of the town together. The most ambitious proposals will transform the area between the town centre and Chesterfield Railway Station, creating a far stronger first impression for visitors and commuters, and supporting around 850 new local jobs.

Living, working and staying in town: Chesterfield is also having an honest rethink about what its town centre is for. Increasingly, it’s being positioned not just as a place to shop, but as a place to live. A healthier mix of residential and retail uses sits at the heart of this vision, backed by a £20m town-centre investment fund spread over 10 years.

This work is being overseen by the newly formed Town Centre Board, made up of local business owners and forward-thinking individuals with a genuine stake in the town’s success. As a local myself, that feels like a positive and necessary shift.

Housing growth more broadly is significant.

Historically, Chesterfield has delivered around 240 new homes a year. The new target is 538 annually over the next 15 years. Alongside this growth, the town continues to outperform expectations when it comes to quality of life, recently ranked once again as the happiest place to live in the East Midlands, second in the UK for raising a family, and among the best places nationally for access to green space.

As someone who has lived in Chesterfield all my life and worked in major cities, I can say with confidence that these rankings ring true. Chesterfield offers a quality of life that is increasingly rare, and our sense of community and people-first culture sets it apart.

Staveley and the growth corridor: The conversation didn’t stop at the town centre.

Staveley featured heavily, and rightly so. With 75 retail units and a vacancy rate of just 10%, the future looks bright.

Investment is clearly being felt on the ground.

A new library, improved outdoor spaces, enhanced canal links and a new bridge from the Canal Trust connecting to the Trans Pennine Trail are all helping to reshape Staveley.

Looking ahead, plans for Staveley Waterside include moorings, business space, retail units and food and drink venues around the canal basin - developments residents will be watching closely.

Our Town The Staveley Growth Corridor is one of the most ambitious projects underway in the area.

It promises 1,500 new homes and 6,400 new jobs, supported by major employers such as Brett Martin, which is investing £50m locally.

Skills development sits at the heart of this growth. A new Construction Skills Hub will train up to 5,000 learners over the next decade in traditional trades and eco-skills.

This will be complemented by the Barrow Hill rail engineering facility, training engineers right up to PhD level, alongside a new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) building at Chesterfield College.

It’s reassuring to see such a strong focus on investing in Chesterfield’s young people. If delivered well, this could significantly improve the retention of skilled local talent and strengthen Chesterfield’s long-term prospects.

The visitor economy: Chesterfield already attracts around 3.7 million day visitors each year, drawn by our market, heritage, countryside and events. The next challenge is converting more of those day trips into overnight stays.

Going "analogue" A new trend or an old way of life?

I’m a Xennial, that’s what I am. A Xennial means growing up straddling two worlds without realising it at the time.

My childhood was stubbornly, gratefully analogue. I grew up in Brockwell, spending long days playing manhunt by the river until the light dropped and someone’s mum shouted us home. There were no group chats or tracking apps, just a vague understanding that you’d turn up eventually, muddy trainers and all.

The first computer I ever encountered was a Sinclair Spectrum 48k. It took ages to load anything, usually from a cassette tape that screeched and whined with the promise of a game that might or might not work. When it did, it felt like magic. I can hear Manic Miner playing in my head as I write...

Pop culture travelled hand in hand. At a mate’s house we’d watch pirate Mangas on VHS, Akira is still the best film ever IMO, copied and recopied until the colours bled and the tracking wobbled. It felt illicit and special, like being let into a secret world your parents barely understood, and probably wouldn’t approve of! Music mattered too, but you had to work for it.

Every Sunday I’d sit by the radio, listening to the Top 40, finger poised over the record button on my TDK 90 cassette, ready to capture my favourite song.

Timing was everything, press too late and you’d miss the intro, press too early and you’d record the DJ talking over it, unforgivable.

That’s what being a Xennial is, remembering a time before everything was instant, searchable, and saved Page 24

forever, while still being young enough to adapt when the digital world arrived. I didn’t grow up online, but I learned to live there. I remember boredom, anticipation, and the effort it took to connect, and the thrill of suddenly being able to do it faster.

We’re the generation shaped by transition, fluent in both worlds, quietly aware that something important was gained, and something else was lost along the way.

Fast forward 30 years and there’s a new trend, 'going analogue'. Going analogue is the quiet rebellion of a generation that has grown up fully digital and is now choosing, deliberately, to step back. I see it everywhere, young people buying film cameras they can’t instantly preview, carrying notebooks instead of notes apps, buying vinyl in Tallbird Records, Vanishing Point Records, browsing the record fair, buying CDs, and even cassette tapes. To them, this isn’t nostalgia, it’s discovery!

That impulse is exactly why making a magazine still matters to me. There’s something deeply tangible about it, the weight of the paper, the smell of ink, the satisfaction of holding something that didn’t exist before you made it. Every month, Paul (S40 mag) and I create something unapologetically analogue, something you can put on a table, let it get dog-ear, or lend to a friend. It’s work you can be proud of in a way a post or story rarely allows. It sits on your coffee table, or in my friend Eddie’s case, the toilet, and is there when you need a break from hyper-connection or something to do this weekend.

For younger generations, this matters. In a world of infinite scrolling, a magazine asks you to slow down. You don’t skim it the way you skim a screen, you engage, you return to it. Reading becomes focused rather than fragmented, and the content feels considered rather than disposable.

For Xennials like me, it’s a strangely full circle. The analogue tools we once assumed were obsolete are being rediscovered not as retro novelties, but as antidotes to digital fatigue. Making something physical, whether a magazine or a photo book, creates a sense of ownership and authorship that’s increasingly rare.

My 'Top Tips' for going analogue, without going off-grid.

Start small: Introduce one analogue habit, a paper notebook, a film camera, or a printed magazine subscription.

Choose tangible: Buy books, build a library, collect vinyl and DVD’s.

Create with intention: Learn a musical instrument, draw, or paint.

Adventure: Get out in the Peaks, go for a walk or a bike ride as a weekly activity.

Play: Have a board games or jigsaw evening once per week.

Use digital to support analogue: Let online spaces add value to your analogue life, not replace it.

Going analogue isn’t about rejecting the digital world, it’s about restoring balance, and remembering the power of making something real.

It's Just Peachzz'y!

World-renowned street artist, Peachzz has taken inspiration from Chesterfield Market and the borough’s heritage to create a breath-taking artwork, called ‘Local’, which covers the entire side of the Pavements Shopping Centre and welcomes visitors coming into the marketplace.

‘Local’ depicts a selection of objects found on Chesterfield Market but also references local history. Features include a shire horse which was used to collect rubbish from the market, a cattle brass which references the historic cattle market site, a pomegranate which features in the Borough crest, and the hands invoke the idea of trade.

Sheffield based, Peachzz said: “My concept was to have all these ideas and stories that I’ve heard shown through items that I’d bought from the market, so there’s loads of these little stories within It. Overall, it aims to support all these small businesses and traders that make up this town.

“The reception has been amazing. We’ve had no end of people coming and stopping us to

say hello and telling us how much they like it.

It’s been heartwarming and encouraging when painting in the rain, but also shows the impact that art pieces have on public spaces.”

Her mural ‘Reverie’ in Sheffield, is #2 Best Mural in the World 2024 with Street Art Cities.

The new mural is funded through Chesterfield Borough Council’s Animate Chesterfield programme which will create new artworks and activities throughout the regeneration projects happening in both Chesterfield and Staveley. Animate is being delivered by Beam, a leading cultural development organisation in collaboration with Chesterfield Borough Council.

Funding for the public art project was secured through planning agreements as part of the council’s percent for art scheme, and must be used for the delivery of public art. chesterfield.gov.uk/animate

As 2026 arrives many people look to address the excesses of the Christmas and New Year celebrations by having a Dry January. This is all excellent news, the body gets a chance to recover and renew, however pub landlords across the country brace themselves for yet another testing period as people stay home and sales drop off a cliff.

However, you don’t need to abandon your local entirely, the public house is a place to meet and socialise, and they need our continued trade. This was highlighted to me when Phil and partner Sarah got in touch to let me know about ‘January Brews’.

Phil says, "Our initial version of our 'January Challenge' came about in 2023.

We noticed that a significant number of pubs around Chesterfield seemed to be closing for good around that time, and 'Dry January' was approaching, when pubs have an even more difficult time of it.

"We also realised that despite having the best intentions to 'we must try that pub sometime' we always ended up defaulting to the same few venues, and never getting around to trying the other pubs around town. So, we decided to try and do our part to help combining these two realisations.

"Over the course of January 2024, we decided we were going to visit every pub in Chesterfield we'd never visited before.

This turned out to be 37 separate pubs, and we managed to visit each one by 31 January 2024.

"We were unable to complete a similar challenge in January 2025, but our 2024 attempt gained a bit of attention, inspiring people to do the same in January 2025. For 2026 we're intending to undertake a similar challenge, and hopefully encourage you, other people and organisations to do the same.

"This January our challenge is 'January Brews'. We're going to attempt to visit 30 different venues over the course of the month starting on 2 January we'll feature one venue each day until the weekend of 31 January. We'll be covering a wide variety of venue types; classic town centre pubs, sports bars, and live music venues. We feel that every one of the venues in Chesterfield provides an important community location and service within its own niche and would be a loss to the community if they were to close.

"We're aware many people strive to undertake 'Dry January' in the new year, and we encourage all efforts. We want to stress that ‘January Brews’ isn't about drinking alcohol, if this isn't for you. Our ideology is to avoid the January Blues, which can be an insular time of year, by going slightly out of your way to visit and support a local venue, enjoying whatever drink you prefer, and perhaps even discovering a new favourite location, especially if it's one that you've always meant to must try that place sometime."

to go visit a local pub that does food and could call in for lunch, a great way to support these important community spaces and still achieve Dry January.

VOTE Don’t Lose Your Postal Vote Words: CBC Press Release

If you vote by post, you MUST reapply by the end of January or risk losing the ability to vote by post.

Anyone registered for a postal vote since before 2024 must reapply by 31 January 2026 or lose the right to vote by post.

This is due to changes introduced as part of the Elections Act 2022, which included including a requirement for postal voters to reapply every three years.

All impacted residents have already been sent a letter or email asking them to reapply– but almost 10,000 people registered locally have yet to act.

If you do not reapply your postal vote will be removed - you can still apply for a postal vote ahead of any future elections but will need to go through the full application process.

Details of how to reapply were included on the letters and emails. It is a simple process that will only take a few minutes.

Our Hasland complex is on the main street, near shops and local facilities, there is no parking at the complex but on street parking is available. The cottages are open plan, spacious one-bedroom homes, with bathroom - wet rooms, kitchen, lounge and communal gardens.

We do not provide home or nursing care at these locations, but services can be organised.

We have a visiting podiatrist, beautician, hairdresser and volunteers from local churches.

A year my son bought a used Peugeot Expert from a dealer in Ilkeston, the start of his gap year adventure.

It really started in September 2024 when he pased his A levels and started his gap year.

From a young age he’d talked about wanting to climb at Fontainebleau, France. The forest in the area is regarded as one of the world’s best areas for bouldering, something he loves.

We fitted a kitchen area with stove that pulls out when the side door is open for alfresco cooking, space for a water container, cool box and importantly an Anker power station that gives 240v mains, USB and lighting, all charged either whilst driving, from the solar panel or plugging it in to a hook up. A fantastic device and something that saved us having to wire up the whole van. He can even charge his four LED roof lights from it.

He registered with an agency and started packing burgers at Holmewood to raise funds.

We made some cupboards and built a carrier to hold his mountain bike in place, snug against the side of the van and when loaded up we were surprised at how much space remained.

We set about creating his tiny, stealthy home.

The interior was stripped back to an empty shell, the ply lining put aside to be sanded and varnished, and he installed soundproofing, insulated every inch he could and lined it with carpet. The result is impressive I have to say.

The result is a home-made camper that has enabled him to travel 6,500 miles taking in France, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and create wonderful memories climbing, walking, mountain biking and exploring with friends.

The plan was to convert the white van into somewhere for him to live for 12 weeks, the longest he can stay in Europe in a six-month period without a visa.

A teak roof deck was fitted so he could strap his bouldering mats on top when camping, and we added a Sticthes & Steel awning and rail that provides some shelter from the sun and rain.

It was during this time that we started to worry about the gearbox, something wasn’t right.

A check by the team at Noble Motorsport on Chatsworth Road, confirmed that a new gearbox and clutch was required, not on our plan, but it had to be done to be confident this white van would get him around Europe.

For now, his the trip is over and Sheffield Uni is his new home to study geography. Ask him what he thinks of his trip and he'll say, 'maybe I've peaked too early, having such a fab adventure at just 19'.

You can still plant bare-root trees, shrubs and roses so long as the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged. If your soil is too wet to dig, wait – planting into sticky clay does more harm than good. This is also the last chance to finish pruning apple and pear trees, along with gooseberries and currants.

This winter has been a stopstart affair: spells of soggy ground followed by drier mild weather. At the time of writing, a prolonged cold spell is too hard to predict.

It’s a challenging time to plan, but still a great time to potter – with an eye on what’s waking up and what still needs protecting.

If you’ve bought seed potatoes, now’s the time to start chitting them – place them in egg boxes somewhere cool, dry and bright. Ideally, aim for 2–3 strong shoots per tuber and rub off any extras once they appear. This will give you a head start when planting.

If you’re sowing broad beans or hardy salads, start them in trays or modules under cover rather than direct into wet or frozen soil. A cold greenhouse, porch, or cloche is ideal. Chillies and aubergines can also be sown indoors in a heated propagator or sunny windowsill – but make sure seedlings are turned daily to prevent them leaning.

Cut down old perennial grasses and hellebore leaves to make way for new growth and let emerging flowers shine. But otherwise, resist the temptation to ‘tidy’ too much – dead stems and seedheads provide valuable overwintering habitat for insects and shelter for small birds.

If you've been feeding birds, keep it up – this is the leanest part of the year. Fresh water is just as important as food, especially in freezing weather.

A shallow dish of water with a floating ball can help delay icing over.

Don’t rush to dig out or replace any plants that look dead. Many perennials stay dormant well into spring and will bounce back when the soil warms. If in doubt, wait.

And finally, a practical tip: if it’s cold or wet and you want to feel like you’ve made a difference, do one job that shows.

Clear a border, trim a hedge edge, or mulch around shrubs. It’s satisfying, visible, and will lift your gardening spirits in the winter gloom.
