Hi and welcome to our December & Christmas edition. It's jingle all the way in this edition, and there's absolutely no excuse to not feel Christmassy after reading everything that's going on locally in the next few weeks.
In this edition we've got; Christmas activities, Christmas shopping ideas, a Winter Windows Trail, and a Christmas competition with a prize pot worth almost £250 - all you have to do is spread your Christmas cheer... Or should I say, spend your Christmas cash... in our local independent businesses, and send us the proof!
In fact, after pulling together this edition, I think I may have peaked a little too early and be done with Christmas! But I'm looking forward to the next few weeks. I have a few extra weeks between editions where I can wind down and enjoy festivities - I hope you can too!
A big big thank you to the businesses who have donated prizes for the competition; 1st Class Kitchens, M's Accessories, Ingmans, Brampton Brewery and S40 & S41 Local magazines!
Thank you also to Sally Anderson Illustrations for this month's cover - not her first S40 Christmas cover, but always a favourite!
We have so much for you to enjoy in this edition so please find a comfy seat, grab a coffee, or glass of wine (apparently it's a very popular tipple to accompany a read of S40 Local) and enjoy your read.
If you would like to advertise, list a classified item, tell us about your local event, contribute in any way or simply want to get in touch please see below. Mobile: 07764 80 10 80 Email: paul@s40local.co.uk Web: www.S40Local.co.uk Write to us:

Winter Windows Trail
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: Sally Anderson Illustrations
A wooden hand-finished Christmas bauble by Sally Anderson could be Yours. All you'll need to do is a bit of detective work as you enjoy the festive Winter Windows Trail.
Can you help Robin, the Christmas bird with a red breast, who's lost a bunch of Santa’s letters!
We know the letters have been lost in one of 12 businesses dotted around Chesterfield town centre, and that helpfully the lost letters have been marked on a trail map! All you've got to do is find the 12 businesses and all the letters that are painted in the windows, then figure out the festive phrase they make up. Write your answer on the trail map that’s available from any of the businesses involved and deliver your completed entry to Cawa Coffee on Low Pavements in the town centre, where you can exchange it for your hand-finished festive bauble.
Trail maps are available from all 12 businesses that have had their window painted by Sally, featuring a Robin. But please note, not all businesses are open seven days a week!
I caught up with Sally as she was putting the finishing touches to one of the windows, helped by her daughter Eve who was on work experience.
The pair of them were clearly enjoying their day, and received loads of positive comments on how great the windows looked as people passed, I couldn’t get my mother-in-law to pose for a picture as she randomly passed by though!
Sally said “I’m thrilled to be involved in this fabulous Christmas project in Chesterfield as part of the ‘Winter Windows Trail’ with Chesterfield Borough Council and Beam”.
Sally is a local illustrator with a passion for creating art that brings joy and creativity to communities. Sally has worked on everything from children’s book illustrations to large-scale murals, including an NHS mural, and is now bringing Christmas magic to Chesterfield.
The maps are available from Sunday 1 December until Thursday 6 January 2025. Whilst you’re out and about following the trail be sure to call into these fab businesses and give them your support, you can never start your Christmas shopping too early.
This project is part of the Animate Chesterfield public art programme which is being delivered by Chesterfield Borough Council in partnership with Beam, a cultural development organisation working across the North of England.
We must give a massive thanks to Sally for colouring one of her images for our Christmas cover too. I hope you love it as much as we do.
Follow Sally below to see the Christmas magic unfold!

Christmas Traditions
Make memories this Christmas
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: Paul Chapman & Sally Anderson
Many traditions develop over the years that we enjoy and cherish, but as our families evolve and times change, these traditions may no longer work or fit our circumstances.
And it's not just traditions, you might be looking for something to do with friends to get you in the festive spirit.
Whatever the occasion, this December here are some events, local offerings and suggested days out for you to plan into your seasonal diary and enjoy with family and friends.
Beers & Carols @ Brampton Brewery
Sun 8 December is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a Brampton Brewery beer and listen to carols by the choir from St Thomas' Church, Chatsworth Road. 8pm at the Brewery on Chatsworth Road.
Enjoy Game Time at Board & Bean Cafe
Enjoy board games? Enjoy coffee? Enjoy cake? Enjoy a beer? You get the idea. Enjoy Board & Bean, Chesterfield's brand-new board game cafe situated in the H&F building on Beetwell Street.
With over 400 games in the library there's sure to be something you like... good luck, I hope it's easier than agreeing what movie to watch!
Andy, Clinton and John look forward to welcoming you with a huge smile. Open by the time you read this, check out.

Advent Calendar
You'll need to be very quick with this one! Shop locally for small gifts and create a one-off advent calendar for a loved one.
I know it's a bit extravagant but for the last couple of years I've filled our pallet tree, see right, with mini gins from Street Spirit and cans of tonic.
Walton Dam Tree
A 'secret' tradition, the Christmas tree in the coppice between Somersall Park and Walton Dam is decorated by Santa's secret elves, and people in the community then add additional decorations to make it even more special. I wonder where the decorations go each year?
Get some fresh air and walk to The Cafe at Libby's for a warm up and a treat afterwards.
Christmas Jumper Days
Thursday 12 December is the official Save The Children Christmas Jumper Day, whilst Thursday 19 December is the Christmas Jumper Night & Festive Karaoke at The Fox & Goose Inn, Wigley. See below. thefoxandgooseinn.com
Santa Cruises
The popular Santa Special Cruises on Chesterfield Canal are running again this Christmas! From early December the John Varley II leaves from Tapton Lock for Santa cruises along the canal. All children receive a gift, and adults get a seasonal drink and mince pie or equivalent. For details scan the QR code below.
Christmas Eve Carols
The car park outside the village hall at Holymoorside is the destination for a short Christmas Eve gathering and carol service each year.
Whatever the weather, this is a go-to for us, led by parish churches this kicks off at 7pm and is accompanied by the Holymoorside Brass Band.
Christmas Walks
There's nothing more seasonal than a cold winter walk to the pub where you warm up by a cosy fire with a local beer or mulled wine. We've done a few walks in our past editions and they are all up on our website.
Please scan the QR codes below for walks that take in The Fox & Goose Inn at Wigley and The Lamb at Holymoorside.

The Lamb Inn
Brampton Brewery's New Holymoorside Pub
Words & Images: Paul Chapman
With our favourite local brewers, Brampton Brewery, taking over The Lamb Inn at Holymoorside you can now enjoy their awardwinning ales at another great location.
I wandered up to meet Beth Smith, manager (pictured) to see what’s new and what it’s like to be welcomed into the Brampton Brewery family.
“I took over in early October and the first thing we did was change our opening hours, you can now call in from 3pm Monday to Friday and midday on Saturday and Sunday. This has proved quite popular with our fantastic locals,” say Beth.
If you don’t know The Lamb Inn, it was with the same family for quite some time, Pat and Alan took it over from Pat’s parents and ran it until Peak Ales took it over almost three years ago, when Rob and Debra ran it. Now in the hands of Brampton Brewery there hasn't been much work to do, other than change the beers and add some new pumps.
“We now have three Brampton Brewery ales, three guest kegs and five lagers,” says Beth. “Golden Bud is a firm favourite with customers, so popular it sold out on opening night! Plus, we also have a rotating pump which is Neck Oil, Hazy Jane, or Jute.”
Beth is from Walton and went to school in the village, she started as a pot washer at The Peak Edge, spent five years working between The Bulls Head and the Barley Mow in Wingerworth and came to The Lame Inn when Peak Ales took over.
I asked what’s the best thing about managing your own pub? “The locals! I’ve known them now for seven years, I know what they are drinking and when they’ll call in. I can pull a beer and have it on the bar ready for them to arrive.
“I love the village, there is a really strong sense of community in the village.”
How did the handover go? “The team at Brampton Brewery were unknown to me but they’ve been so supportive and enthusiastic, they were keen to keep me on so there is continuity, and although there’s a change it doesn’t feel like it.”
“It’s been a really smooth transition, we’re seeing new faces as a result of the new beers and as word spreads we’re seeing people from across town. And the locals are happy which is so important and I’m looking forward to the future with Brampton Brewery.”
There's been minimal change so far, they're hoping to update the space behind the bar and are looking to offering some food sharing boards.
I hadn't realised there was a room on the left of the bar, refurbished by Peak Ales, it's a welcome addition that has increased the space, adding more seating and containing a cupboard full of board games!
If you’ve never sampled a pint (other drinks are available!) at The Lamb Inn, you really should it’s been a pub since 1760 and today is a child and
dog friendly space, the beer garden at the front catches the late afternoon and evening sun, there's a small library for you to swap your books and they have a pub quiz on Tuesday night where the winning team gets eight pints.
The current Brampton Brewery was reestablished in 2007, a project by a team of local ale enthusiasts. Head brewer Chris Radford revived the name and breathed fresh life into the legend. The Lamb Inn is their fourth pub (five if you include the Brampton Bierhuis, onsite at the brewery), the team just need to take on 138 more to reach the heights of the original brewery which ceased brewing in the 1950s.
Things were very different in the times of the original brewery and if you fancy an entertaining evening of local history, I can recommend a Brampton Brewery Tour at the Brampton Bierhuis on Chatsworth Road. I’ve done it twice and it’s constantly updated with new facts so always worth a booking, an ideal Christmas present did someone shout?
Time to get your boots on and take a stroll to The Lamb Inn and enjoy a beer of the week, which is just £2.90, and when I was there it was Brampton’s Golden Bud. What's not to like?

Board games are an amazing way to bring people together, creating shared experiences full of strategy, laughter and friendly competition. Whether you’re solving mysteries, building empires or bluffing your way to victory, they spark real connections. With over 400 games to choose from at Board & Bean - ranging from quick laughs to deep adventures - there’s something for everyone! From Back to the Future and Taskmaster to Blood on the Clock Tower (the inspiration behind Traitors), every visit promises a fun social escape. I can’t wait for you to experience the joy these games bring!
I caught up with local gents Andy Yates, Clinton Peters, and John McAssey - the team behind Board & Bean, to chat about games, food, themes and their grand opening!
Board & Bean Café is a total vibe (as the young ones say), imagine if Urban Outfitters served amazing cake and coffee. Walking in, I instantly felt the 'cool' factor and knew this was a place I’d be coming back to again and again. From the custom gaming tables to the flickering holograms above, it’s clear this isn’t just a business - it’s a passion project, and it shows in every detail. I was impressed by the lengths the team have gone to, they have created something truly special.
The venue is not just 'Instagram-able', it's also an accessible and inclusive space.
“We’ve created a casual, inviting space that’s fully inclusive and open to everyone,” says Andy. “We’ve put a lot of effort into making Board & Bean accessible and we’ve been consulting with neurodivergent groups to ensure we accommodate and understand that everyone has different needs.”
“It’s a chilled place where we want people to come, relax and have fun. We have created an atmosphere where people want to spend long periods of time, and return to as often as they can,” adds John.
I moved onto the star of the show, the cake, no, sorry the board games. With hundreds to choose from, how do we know where to start and what do the guys recommend?
“The first game that got me hooked was Small World, and it’s a great place to start if you’re after challenge, strategy and fun!” Andy says with a smile. “At the start of the game you’re assigned a random race and trait - you might be a flying orc, for example. The goal is to take territory from other players, which earns you coins. The player with the most territory at the end wins!”
“Playing online is fun, but nothing beats gathering with friends and family for in-person games,” says John. “A fantastic game to kick things off is Mafia De Cuba, a thrilling party game full of stolen diamonds, treachery and deception!”
“I am obsessed with Twilight Imperium,” Clinton adds enthusiastically. It’s a galactic conquest game that requires strategy, political manoeuvring and economic bargaining. No two-play throughs are the same, and once you have got it down, it’s amazing every time.”
With over 400 games available to play at Board & Bean, there is something for everyone. Whether it’s a works night out, an afternoon with the kids or a regular Wednesday session with friends, the guys have got you covered.
Throughout the year the team will host themed nights, ranging from movies and TV to Dungeons & Dragons, Blood on the Clock Tower and quizzes!
In addition to their extensive game menu, Board & Bean serve up a food and drink menu featuring cakes by Lydia and their signature Board & Bean coffee blend. Feeling adventurous? Try one of Clinton’s cocktails, he’s enjoyed honing his mixology skills!
Booking a table, choosing a game, or ordering from the menu couldn’t be easier - all can be done through a QR code or an app in advance of your visit. For the old-school folks (like me), you can simply order with a team member, who will be more than happy to assist.
It was great getting to know the guys at Board & Bean and having a sneak peek at Chesterfield’s coolest new venue. I am super excited to be attending the opening night on the 30 November and I look forward to many happy times at Board & Bean in the future with my friends and family.

Dream Doors Gratitude and Service
Words & images: Simon Paterson
After ten years at the helm of Dream Doors and over 1,000 bespoke kitchens sold and installed, Mark and Rachael Holmes decided it’s time to move onto their next adventure; retirement and travelling.
I caught up with Mark and Rachael to talk humble beginnings, highlights, handovers and gratitude!
Understandably, Mark and Rachael Holmes, the original owners of Dream Doors on Sheffield Road were a little emotional when discussing the handover of their wonderful, local business to Mykel and Tanya.
“When we first started Dream Doors, it was me, some samples and a van, but it wasn’t long until we found our perfect showroom on Sheffield Road and we have had many happy years here, filled with great memories,” smiles Mark.
“I joined Mark once the showroom opened in 2015, and we have met so many amazing people and customers along the way. It’s going to be strange not getting in the car in the morning with Jasper (the family dog) and driving to the showroom,” says Rachael with a warm tone to her voice.
Stepping into the showroom, you’re immediately welcomed by a lovely, homely atmosphere that invites you to linger and explore. As the kitchen is the heart of every home, this husband-and-wife team have crafted a space that perfectly blends comfort with inspiration. It showcases the finest products Dream Doors has to offer, all whilst maintaining that cosy, inviting feeling of home. I would have been more than happy cooking a Sunday roast in there, listening to 6 Music!
“People spend so much time in their kitchens, and we want it to be a space they truly love,” adds
Mykel. “We’re not just selling a kitchen - we’re enhancing their quality of life, uplifting their mood, and transforming how they experience their home.”
Towards the back of the showroom there's an array of thank you cards from grateful customers, and it’s no surprise with a rating of 9.8 out of 10!
“We’ve received chocolates, biscuits, flowers and wine over the years from our happy customers, and we just want to say a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of them,” says Rachael with genuine sincerity. “We’re truly grateful.”
“I will miss the look of gratitude on our customers faces, some of them have been moved to tears. Having a new kitchen is a dream for some people and I am happy to have been able to make it come true,” says Mark.
But they couldn’t have achieved this without their expert installer, Glen. A valued member of the team for over eight years, Glen’s workmanship is second to none, and he is frequently mentioned in reviews for his professionalism, friendliness and thoughtfulness. He has played an integral role in building Dream Doors’ reputation.
Brimington residents, Mykel Hedge and Tanya Carnell are the new owners of Dream Doors Chesterfield and plan on continuing the great service that Mark and Rachael have delivered for almost a decade.
“We are excited to get started and ready for a new challenge. I am extremely happy that the wider team are staying on, including Glen,” smiles Tanya. “Mark and Rachael have worked so hard to build a sustainable, local business and we will do our very best to ensure we deliver a personal service to the highest standards,” adds Mykel.
It was an absolute pleasure meeting both the new and long-standing members of the Dream Doors team. We wish them every success for the future and are delighted to welcome them to the S40 and S41 magazines family.

THE CLOCK
As another day begins to dawn
A piercing sound I hear It is the clock beside my bed That screams at me so near
And as I place my hand upon it
To block its constant cry
The noise is stopped at once – hooray! So I lay down and sigh
But as I snuggle deep within The comfort of my bed
The motion of the clock I hear ‘Get up, you’re not yet dead’
Tick tock, tick tock
The rhythm of the clock
As the time of day is racing by I shout out loud ‘please stop’
But the clock it does not listen It covers up its ears
So once again I raise my voice ‘Be quiet, I’m sleeping here’
Then the clock becomes defiant
As time is on its side
And as its hands turn round and round I slide down the bed to hide
But even in the darkness
Trapped and all alone
The calling of the clock surrounds me
In the bedroom of my home
And so we start to argue
As it tries to get its way
‘Get out of bed you lazy thing Get dressed and start your day’
This clock it does annoy me
But what is it I can do?
Then suddenly a thought pops up I’ll drop it down the loo!
Then its petty voice can’t wake me
In the early morning light
And work will be a distant dream
As I roll over and say ‘goodnight’!

The Pearson
Words: Paul Chapman
Images: FoPP
‘The Pearson’ or Pearson Park is a small patch of suburban greenery tucked between Old Hall Road, Beehive Road and Barker Lane. A place that had become a little neglected and unloved until local residents took it upon themselves to inject some love, time and energy into the space.
The park, also known as Barker Lane Park, was donated to the residents of Chesterfield by Pearson Pottery, a local pottery business established in the early 1800’s.
Steve Marriott and Kate Alvey are two of the founder members of The Friends of Pearson Park and I caught up with them at The Café at Libby’s.
Steve informed me, "The park used to be well used for football, had a small play area and had even been home to a circus, but had become run-down and undervalued."
Kate, who lives on Beehive Road, explained “There was a small garden area at the end of my street that myself and two friends had decided to tidy up, and pleased with our results we laughed that ‘the next thing is that park’.”
Susie, one of Kate's friends, contacted local councillor Jonathan Davies to see if there was any assistance the council could offer, and he helped them establish the Friends of Pearson Park (FoPP) group. The initial meeting took place in July 2023, with Steve, Kate, two of Kate's neighbours and Jan, a former local councillor.
The first job was to remove the damaged and run-down play equipment, Councillor Ron Milhaly provided £2,000, the old play area was cleared and new benches installed. Young samplings have been planted that will form a Miyawaki forest; a technique for cultivating fast-growing groves of native plants, with the dense, mixed planting intended to simulate a natural forest. This was further helped by the King's Coronation Fund that donated nine additional trees and plants that have established themselves very well.
Steve says, “In place of the old play area it already feels like the park is coming back to life, and we now see people sitting enjoying the park. The FoPP meet in the Britannia Inn where we plan activities such as working parties that have removed ivy from railings, cut back brambles and
blackberries and have helped make the park a more pleasant place to be.”
There are no plans to reinstall play equipment, the Inkerman and Monkey Parks are both close by with their facilities, The Pearson aims to offer a calmer more natural space.
The support from the council park staff and the local community has been fantastic, local primary school kids have helped plant bulbs and bluebells, Marcella from Déjà vu donated bulbs, and local businesses, Northern Tea, Fresh Ideas and others, donated raffle prizes for a Pie & Pea night at The Britannia Inn to raise funds for further Improvements.
In the immediate future a local councillor is hoping to plant an orchard where the play equipment was, they hope to widen the paths to make the park more accessible to all, and they'd like to restore the Victorian railings on Old Hall Road. “We are also looking to work with a local artist to provide some artwork to the wall space in the park,” says Steve. "So, if you know anyone who might be able to help please pass on the contact details below."
"It's amazing how a group who are passionate about the area can make a difference,” says Kate. “We started with a bit of gardening and relocating refuse bins and these small things make a change, and these lead to more. We’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to use the park, maybe for fitness boot camps, yoga sessions etc, we’ve only been going a year but we'd really like to develop an open space that can be useful and we can be proud of. I think that's what we'd all want for the area we live in."
"Take a walk through the park and let us know if you’d like to get involved."
If you’d like to support the FoPP you can find them on Facebook as below or use the contact details for Kate.

Calling all Chesterfield Artists
Let’s put Chesterfield on the Map!
Words & Images: Dawn Anderson
For almost 20 years Derbyshire Open Arts has held its annual event, celebrating the wealth of creative talent in Derbyshire. It always takes place the second bank holiday in May (planned for Saturday 24 to Monday 26 May 2025). Last year there were brilliant events all over Derbyshire including Holymoorside and Dronfield, but sadly nothing in Chesterfield. It is time to change that and showcase the rich talent that Chesterfield is home to.
If you are an artist and are interested in opening your studio in Chesterfield, or live just outside of the town but are interested in exhibiting in Chesterfield please get in touch. This year I have volunteered to introduce artists and venues to each other in Chesterfield (a similar initiative is happening for other areas in Derbyshire).
If you are unaware of Derbyshire Open Arts, the concept is that local artists and makers show their work to the public, attracting art enthusiasts, collectors, and visitors from both local communities and further afield, but perhaps more importantly stimulating the interest in the art of the local community. Many artists open their studios and give demonstrations. Other artists group together exhibiting in local venues, often raising money for charity by providing coffee and cake.
For that one weekend in May you can tour Derbyshire, often plotting your own route to see all kinds of fabulous art. There are no entry fees for visitors and anyone can participate, making it a highly inclusive event. It also provides a boost to the local economy because visitors may dine, shop and stay locally.
Derbyshire Open Arts (DoArts) is a voluntary organisation with a committee that promotes the event each year. For a small fee per artist, DoArts will extensively market artists and their events in printed media (the brochure), online social media and local and national media, including TV where possible. They even provide banners and balloons for venues and a promotional pack for the artists. Feedback from those who have taken part (and those who have attended) has always been really positive.
Following the event last year a few local Chesterfield venues got in touch to offer their spaces so it would be great to find artists that want to exhibit or local artists willing to open their studios.
I am not an artist, although I am a creative (film and words are my bag!), but I am part of a creative community in Chesterfield, so I know that they are here. I think that this could be the year that Chesterfield’s artist community is represented as the vibrant community that it is.
If you are interested in finding out more about the event, whether you are an artist, or a possible venue then please get in touch.

Walking For Ashgate
Words: Brookfield
Images: See text
Each year, Brookfield students take a day out of school and, supervised and accompanied by staff, go for a sponsored walk. As well as being a challenge for all involved, it's a charity fundraiser and this year Ashgate Hospice benefitted from the fantastic sum of just over £11,000 raised.
Teacher Nick Davey, who has been part of the organising team for the last two years, said: “This has now become a firm fixture in the Brookfield
calendar – one which, despite the hard work organising it and the fact that many students put themselves out of their comfort zone on the day, shows the school community spirit at its best.”
The school tasked students with a photography competition and the winning entry from Dipika Paul is shown opposite; students and teachers along the route, that took in Linacre Reservoirs and Old Brampton. On the left below is second place image from Logan Lodge and 'Nature' from Laura Herrington that was awarded third place.

At our Choral Day in June 2024, 150 singers gathered together to rehearse and perform the Mozart Requiem and we are expecting large numbers to join us for next year’s event which will celebrate its 26th anniversary.
The date is 7 June 2025 at the Central Methodist Church in Chesterfield and the poster and preregistration form is on the website.

The format is as before: a day of rehearsals followed by a free concert in the evening, open to the public, which will be in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
After the concert we will hold a social event with our popular buffet at the cost of just £6 per person.

Whist Drives In & Around
Chesterfield
Words: Suzanne Shaw
My husband Terry and myself have been playing whist for at least twelve years in and around Chesterfield at Whist Drives. Our first encounter was when I'd recently retired - a Monday afternoon at Holymoorside Village Hall and it was run by the Holymoorside Bowls Club. Once in contact with people in the know it transpired there were Whist Drives in several areas around Chesterfield if you knew where to look.
A Whist Drive at Great Longstone was run by John Moseley from Curbar and it had been running for quite some years. When Covid hit it coincided with John becoming very ill and he felt he could not run it anymore so Terry and I took it over with another couple called Sue and Christopher Bowler who live in Sheffield.
The Monday afternoon Whist at Holymoorside no longer runs, but there is one on Tuesday afternoon.
Things escalated and after Covid we also took over the running of two other Whist Groups whose leaders felt they could not continue, one at Holymoorside Village Hall and the other was at Cutthorpe, which has moved to Walton Village Hall.
Pre Covid the group was very well attended. Since Covid our numbers have reduced and we are always looking for new members. A good night at a Whist Drive is, at the moment, about six tables. People attend from Matlock, Bakewell, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Priestcliffe, Great Longstone and Baslow, so quite a wide area.
• Friday Night: Great Longstone Village Hall, Church Lane, Great Longstone DE45 1TB
• Saturday Night: Walton Village Society Hall, Walton Back Lane, Walton S42 7LT
• Sunday Night: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Sunday in the month: Holymoorside Village Hall, 42 Holymoor Road, Holymoorside S42 7DX
Sessions cost £3, evening sessions run 7pm to 9:30ish and afternoon sessions 2 to 4:30pm.
Prizes are cash prizes and it depends how many attend as to what is paid out. We usually have refreshments halfway through.
If you ever played Whist as a child and would like to refresh your skills and enjoy a pleasant social occasion you will receive a warm welcome at any of our venues.
Contact Suzanne and Terry Shaw on 01246 278778 or 07469 208262 or Sue and Chris Bowler on 0114 2621548 or 07855 429235.

Marking Christian Unity Week 18 to 25 January 2025
Christian Unity week is the traditional week of prayer where groups and different Christian churches come together to seek common ground, and share experience and appreciation for each other, often through prayer.
Paul King, from Christians Together for Chesterfield has witnessed the gradual decline on these activities and is suggesting a novel way to revive the tradition.
Paul has developed a script that can be obtained from him, see contact details below, He invites you to assemble in a small group of five people or more. His vision is that each group member will take on a role, with the full support of a script, and interview three saintspioneer Christians; Peter, Paul and Mary. One person might interview all three guests, or the roles could rotate. This could also be part of a longer or larger gathering - you can choose how to make this work for you and your group.
You could run the event in a house group, a home group or in a congregation. You may want to have a bible handy for checking against the traditional script. And finally, you may enjoy singing the Taize Magnificat (again, music will be supplied).
I encourage groups who have done this to share in a gathering of other similar groups on Saturday 25 January 2025, and will provide further details to all who express an interest.
If you would like to assemble a group and would like a script, and/or like to be involved in an event, please contact Paul King, using the details below. More details are also available in the advert below.

December's Tips...
For a sustainable garden
Words: Transition Chesterfield & Inspire Community Garden
Image: Paul Chapman
Hard prune overgrown shrubs and hedges now whilst they are dormant. Tackle buddleia to keep them under control.
Keep an eye on any stored produce, bulbs and tubers to make sure the mice haven’t found them. Hanging them in a sack is usually a good solution, but remember that mice are amazing climbers. Another option is to store them in compost in the dark.
Prune fruit trees (hard fruit only, like apples and pears) and bushes growing in the open (i.e. not trained against a wall). There’s all sorts of advice as to how to do this, but the general aim is end up with something like an inverted wineglass shape, allowing light and air to reach all parts of the plant. Take hardwood cuttings of deciduous trees and shrubs. If you’ve not tried it before, why not give it a go? It costs hardly anything and is very satisfying. Cut some pencil-thick stems of plants such as willow, dogwood or gooseberries and stick them in a 12 to 15cm pot with some compost. Even the most experienced of gardeners won’t get all their cuttings to root, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the first few times.
it all at once - you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all.
After the frosts clear, the garden tends to look messier. Whilst it’s worth clearing away the most obvious eyesores, try not to be too fussy; hollow stems, old logs and piles of leaves are excellent overwintering spots for essential wildlife. Plan for next year; check seed catalogues and prepare a wish-list. Be realistic about what you can do, as failing to meet a cherished plan may discourage further attempts. If you want to get children interested in gardening, there are lots of books aimed at different age ranges which would make good presents. Don’t insist on dragging them outside in the cold and wet to do something just because it’s the ‘correct’ time of year. Plants can’t read calendars… Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.
A reminder that Transition Chesterfield will be holding their annual Potato Day on Saturday 25 January. We will be selling about 30 varieties of potato, plus onions, shallots, garlic, beans, peas and green manures all at very competitive prices – buy as few or as many as you like. For the opening times and location check transitionchesterfield. org.uk nearer the time. If you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in.
Try to cover any exposed bare soil with a layer of thick mulch. This will stop the worst of the winter rains eroding and degrading the soil and hopefully reduce weeds.
For those not yet converted to ‘no dig’, winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do

Chesterfield Ladies FC The Cup Games
Words & Images: Michael South
Welcome back to another update on Chesterfield Ladies FC. In this month's edition we take a look at the results and fixtures of the club. We also have, this time round, the blues manager, Neil Robinson under the spotlight answering my five questions in order to get to know the team a little bit better. As the months go by we will get to know each player of the squad.
So, let's kick off with the results.
Since the season started in September the club had climbed to the top of the league. But given the recent run of cup games, the Spirettes haven't played any league games at the time of writing so have slipped a few league places as the other league teams have been playing. Currently the ladies sit in 4th place.
The last league game the ladies played was away against Mansfield Town on the 29 September. This ended goal-less. After that came the four
continuous cup games. Firstly away against Brookside Athletic, at the Syston Memorial Ground in the first round of the League Cup. This ended 0-2 to the Blues. Goals scored by Imogen Fowler and Sophie Marshall.
Next up the Derbyshire FA County Cup against Staveley Miners Welfare. This game was featured in my article last month due to the epic result, 2-12 to Chesterfield! This was technically an away fixture but played at the Blues home ground in Staveley. Goal scorers for this one were; Fowler x6, Marshall x5 and Naylor.
11 November was the second round of the League Cup against River City Women's and Girls First Team. The Chesterfield Ladies lost this one 3-2 and bowed out of the cup which is unfortunate as they put-up a good fight. Goals netted for this one were from the boots of Fowler and Fiddler.
Next came the Derbyshire FA Cup against Buxton FC. This was a truly fantastic result to get back to winning ways. Naturally Fowler bagged another hat trick. Well four to be honest. I lose count how many goals Imogen scores! Abbie Staples scored the 5th.
Right to finish this month, I give you Neil Robinson, the club's manager. Here's my 5 quick questions answered!
What was your first football match you went to and who took you?
Sadly, I can't remember my first ever match; most likely would have been a Spireites game. I use to lie to my friends saying I went to the famous 4 all game Spireites vs Liverpool back in 92
What's your best memory playing/managing footy?
My favourite memory since coaching is easily winning the cup with my first team Spire Rangers U7s but capturing the great moment where one of our players scored his first ever goal and celebrating with his friends. Amazing and proud moment.
What's the best goal you've ever witnessed?
Again memory has failed me but back at Saltergate seeing Tony Lormor score a curler from outside of the box in his Adidas Predators Favourite film?
I do not have a favourite but films that I love and made a mark.
Oliver, Monty Python and the holy grail, Naked Gun and Terminator Favourite band?
No favourite but influenced by: The Darkness, The Streets, Muse and Meat loaf.
Thanks to Neil for a little insight into his world. Come back next month for another team member to reveal their favourite sporting highlights, bands and films. Oh and also the very latest Chesterfield Ladies FC news, results and goal scorers. Just left to wish the club all the best on and off the field.
