Intro Hi

Welcome to our July edition. As I write, it's the longest day (but then aren't all days the same length?), at last it's warm outside and it feels possible that summer is creeping towards us.

With the better weather, the community comes together to do unusual things; dressing wells with flowers and plants, putting out figures made of plant pots, stuffing straw into old clothes to make scarecrows, racing plastic ducks down streams, gathering at any one of the many summer fayres ... mainly to eat cake and drink tea!

The number of local events seems to grow each year and all have one thing in common. They bring us together.

This sense of community has never been more important. I think it's great to feel part of something. Before I moved to Chesterfield, I didn't really experience this strong sense of community, and I believe we should do all we can to continue to build it, to create networks of people, to bring like-minded people together, to support one another, to grow.

It's easy to reach for a device and swipe through social media, but what about face-to-face media? Join a local club (there are loads in our Regular Events), learn to play squash at Princes, go for a run with that guy down the street, buy a loaf of bread from a market ... maybe this month we should all set ourselves a goal of adding at least one new person to our contact list ... but do it face-to-face.

Emily Barnes is a mum of two from Chesterfield, and designer of the awardwinning garden, ‘Elements of Sheffield’, that was recently on show at the 2019 RHS Chatsworth Flower Show. Meeting Emily, you can’t help thinking that she has it all - she’s intelligent, obviously very talented, has two lovely children, a supportive husband and is doing her dream job. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing; it’s grit, determination, persistence and hard work that have helped Emily to achieve her dream.

We became aware of Emily’s amazing story through Facebook. Helen Rowan, whose photos regularly feature in S40 Local, had been invited by Emily to go up to the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show and take photos of her show garden. We contacted Helen, who put us in touch with Emily, and went to find out more about her exciting and inspiring achievement.

Just a year ago, Emily, who went to St Mary’s School and studied graphic design at Chesterfield College, visited the 2018 Chatsworth Flower Show, and was planning on her return to Nottingham Trent University to restart a course in Horticulture - having left her course at university eight years earlier after becoming pregnant and suffering an illness.

The opportunity to build her show garden at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show was the result of winning BBC Radio Sheffield’s competition for amateur gardeners and designers to ‘represent the heritage of the local area’ with a garden design. The prize was sponsorship to build her garden, ‘Elements of Sheffield’, with the support of award-winning designer, Lee Bestall, from Bestall & Co with offices based at Renishaw Hall.

“It’s been an amazing year”, admitted Emily “a complete whirlwind. I returned to

University in October 2018 as a mature student, having spent the previous eight years bringing up my young family.

“In mid-January, my mum made me aware of a competition for amateur gardeners on BBC Radio Sheffield, it was two weeks before the closing date and I worked day and night to complete and submit my design to ‘Represent the heritage of the local area’”.

Emily learned she had won the competition live on air, on the BBC Radio Sheffield breakfast show. “It was completely surreal!

I was invited on to the show to talk about my design, as one of the shortlisted entrants, but I seemed to be the only person there, and they announced live that I was the winner!”

Emily explained, “I designed an urban domestic garden, to meet the brief I wanted to represent the importance and proximity of Sheffield to the Peak District. I did this in a number of ways… the historical context emphasised the importance of the Peak District to steelmaking based in the city, the whole industry was facilitated by availability of iron ore, gritstone and water from Sheffield’s five rivers… I wanted to demonstrate this history alongside the present-day context and the importance of the Peak District to the people of Sheffield for leisure and relaxation (a parallel I draw to a well-designed garden).

“I wanted the garden design to reflect this relationship, and I depicted the urban landscape towards the front with a sculpture to depict the steel… moving towards a more naturalist garden at the rear to represent the Peak District.

The steel frame was a large structure to incorporate into the 6x4m available space, but drew on a clever design trick, of using large pieces to give the impression of having more space.

People “The front of the garden was sunk into a basin, as Sheffield city centre is in relation to the Peak District, another design trick for small gardens to give the impression of space.

“I used vibrant colours in the planting to symbolise the people, cultures and diverse communities of Sheffield.

“It was important that the garden encouraged wildlife, and I was thrilled that during the show the air was filled with the gentle buzzing of the bees, which also visited and enjoyed the creation!

“One of my design highlights was my moss water wall, inspired by something I’d noticed in nature whilst walking on the Monsal Trail, a piece of rock covered in moss with water pouring behind. I loved the sound and the textures. I recreated this in my garden, and it became a great talking point, particularly with other designers, who had never seen this done.

“The BBC sponsorship didn’t cover everything for the garden, so I had to source other forms of sponsorship, and have been overwhelmed at the response and support I’ve received.

“Local Artist Jason Heppenstall, the sculptor behind the ill-fated lion sculpture recently stolen from outside the Peacock pub in Barlow (now replaced by a dragon), produced the upcycled cutlery sculpture, inspired by the sculpture in the Millennium Galleries, Sheffield, and the water feature balls in the Winter Gardens.

“NEST.co.uk loaned me the steel feature chairs.

“Polypipe, a Doncaster based company, provided the sustainable drainage solution.

A new product developed to improve water flow through hard surfacing and paving – it’s porous paving with a water system below to enable water to soak away and prevent flooding. They also have a product where soak-away water is stored below the surface in a tank for use on garden watering.

“Bradstone supplied the paving.

“The whole Chatsworth experience has been amazing, I’ve met my gardening heroes, appeared on Gardener’s World twice, alongside those gardening heroes, and had my garden featured on the TV show about RHS Chatsworth. It has

been incredibly exciting and special… an amazing opportunity. The people I have met and the things I have learned have given me confidence and credibility, and that’s invaluable as I complete my studies and move forward with my career."

Emily’s Top Tips 1. Don’t be afraid of trees / structure even in a small garden, height is essential and is great for wildlife and to provide seasonal interest. A great tree for a small garden would be an ornamental crab apple.

2. Right plant, right place is essential. If you get that right, you can’t go wrong.

The RHS website is a great resource to check the conditions needed for your plants.

3. If you’re designing a garden always focus on a winter structure and winter interest first. This means you always have something to look at; think evergreens, coloured barks, coloured shoots.

4. If you have a small garden think very carefully about what you want from your garden - a place to sit, somewhere to grow veg, entertaining friends - and then focus on what you need it to do, be STRICT with yourself.

5. Be BOLD - large items in a small space - it sounds counter intuitive, but it makes the space feel bigger!

Kelly Sheldon, the creative talent behind S40 Locals' cartoons, design guru from 13 Bends Design, singer and, perhaps most importantly, a local mum, has been in touch to raise the profile of the group and talk a little about her Reyt Big Busk fund-raising event.

"WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT" she outlines.

"Please help us raise £5,000 so we can apply for a grant for £50,000 for new play equipment for the local children.

lpaca Factory are an up-andcoming indie band based in Chesterfield, who formed in October 2018 and have already performed numerous gigs, for example. at the Foundry, The Nottingham House and Chesterfield County Music Bar. Their Guitarist, James Vardy, has kindly answered some questions for us on behalf of the band. What has been your favourite gig so far? Our next gig was at a pub in Sheffield at the end of January called 'The Nottingham House' that Rosie played with us, we brought all our mates and there were about 100ish sixth formers crammed into this little pie and peas pub. It was absolutely crazy, the owner of the pub came in and asked us to calm down the crowd multiple times. I think we all say that was our favourite gig so far.

Who are your main musical influences?

We each listen to quite a wide variety so our influences would have to be a split between 50/60s bands and 00s bands.

For Gan, bands like Rolling Stones and The Beatles, and for me, 00s bands like The Strokes, The Libertines and Sheffield bands like Milburn and The Artic Monkeys.

Drums are pretty universal between eras but Church likes 80s stuff so she definitely chucks in interesting and varied fills.

How did you go about your first gig?

The first gig we had was supporting The Rooves headline at the end of December (The Rooves all went to Brookfield as well and were really happy to help us out). We scraped our songs together and showed Jono what we’d come up with for bass lines. We had about a 20-minute

Alpaca Factory is a very unique name, what inspired it? For The Rooves gig we needed a band name for the poster and for social media etc. Tom’s brother came out with Alpaca Factory but we were undecided for some time, we made a list of potential names (e.g. 'cherry pickers' and 'plastic bees’) and ended up doing a twitter poll and Alpaca Factory stuck with us in the end. It’s really grown on us as a name and we all rate like it now.

Who would be your dream musician to support, and at what venue? An answer for a realistic gig would be Joe Carnall’s next Christmas gig at the Leadmill or the o2 in Sheffield. Something we really want to do is try get on the festival circuit at some point, Leeds, Y Not, Tramlines sort of festivals would be incredible.

A proper dream would obviously be like some massive international tour supporting The Arctic Monkeys on their next album I reckon.

Who wrote your original song ‘They Say The Devil Wears Prada’? 'They say the Devil wears Prada' was the second song we finished. We started off with the basic chord progression, and we originally worked out a vocal melody but with

completely different lyrics. It was going to be a song about bouncers at clubs and that. We decided to scrap that idea, but stuck with the vocal melody. For the middle section we were stuck on a drum fill and guitar solo for a while. We knew the story we wanted to tell with the song and the structure was built around that. One day, just playing the tune over and over, Gan came up with the iconic ‘devil wears Prada’ lyric and we built the first and last verse around that. I think when you first listen, the structure will be quite weird, but we put a lot of thought into it and the structure mirrors the story being told. We wanted to get it out before the Notty House gig so we recorded a live take in our little practice shed with Rosie, who mixed and produced it, and we put it up on SoundCloud. It’s currently doing quite well, it got to 1k before the gig in under a week. We all love the song as we all had quite a big part in it, and it's a great feeling to hear our mates singing it back to us at gigs.

What does the future hold for you at the moment? At the moment we're focusing on getting the first single out onto Spotify and getting all the art sorted and that sort of thing. With exams as well, gigs have taken a backseat for the moment. We’ve got something really exciting end of this year though, and we’re thinking of doing some free entry gigs in pubs as a thanks to all our mates for paying ticket prices for the last few. They will be longer, more chill sets and we’ll hopefully be able to choose some exciting support acts.

It’s quite hard to get support slots when you’ve not released much music or established yourself, so we’ve been very grateful to all the bands that have had us.

Wouldn't it be great to feel fabulous?

Paul Shepherd, Gritstone Every year, according to the mental health charity Mind, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. To put that into a local context, this magazine is delivered to 8,400 homes. So nearly 20,000 people have exposure to this article and that means nearly 5,000 people in our neighborhood are struggling or may struggle with their mental health.

In my experience one of the biggest patterns of behavior that prevents us from feeling fabulous is our inner critic or “monkey mind.”

The voice in our head that continually points out what we are doing wrong and why we won’t succeed. Why we are too fat or too thin, too this or too that. Whatever we are, it’s probably not what we should be, according to this inner narrative.

The Inner Critic So how do we turn off this inner critic and become the very best version of ourselves and in doing so, start to feel fabulous?

For several years I volunteered for a crisis charity in the UK. This first-hand experience of exposure to the pain people go through in an extreme emotional crisis has shaped my own pursuit to understand, develop and apply techniques that can help people from experiencing such distress and upset.

Dealing With Negativity NLP is used to interrupt patterns of behavior that don’t serve us, and EFT works to collapse those negative experiences or beliefs that we form around our uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, or troubling memories.

We ‘tap’ on the correct pressure points while bringing the thoughts or emotions into consciousness. The aim is to find relief, relaxation, and promote healing around the emotional or physical issues that hold us back.

I use both tools to great success to improve the quality of people’s lives and overall wellbeing.

As a licensed NLP Master Practitioner and an integrative therapist, I’ve studied and been trained in EFT. I use these techniques and others that I’m licensed to deliver, to enable people to be the best version of themselves that they can be. And to help them feel fabulous.

mma Shaw (ES) is a practicing artist, a mum, and works at Chesterfield College as part of the West Studios team. Emma talks to Annie French (AF) about her art, mental health and her inspiration.

AF: Has art helped you through this?

ES: Simon and Bekah, the editors of S41 Local, sign off their blogs with ‘Peace, Love and Positivity', and this got me thinking about what that means. Being a good person, human nature and staying positive in life are what many of us aspire to. I got this idea in my head and my creativity started to flow. Sometimes I don’t know where an idea will take me.

AF: Art can play an important part in mental health recovery; do you see your career moving in that direction?

AF: This month's S40 and S41 Local front covers are both on the theme of ‘Peace, Love and Positivity’. Where did this idea come from?

ES: Not in the beginning, my brain was fogged, my hands wouldn’t work, I couldn’t get the information from my brain into my hands. Slowly it lifted and I started doing small projects from magazines using textiles, and the creativity gradually came back. A lot of my textile art is to do with my need to create but not having the time to perfect it.

AF: How did you get into art?

ES: No, I’m too close to it. I would be better participating in a class than facilitating one. I’m very happy with where I’m at now, watching my son grow, doing chalk board commissions. That’s not to say I’m not ambitious. I’m hoping to put together an exhibition in the next few years.

ES: I don’t know, it’s something I've always done. I did Contemporary Arts at University, in dance and performing arts, I then went to work for the Pigeon Theatre Company in Manchester.

AF: How did you get into Chalk Board Art?

ES: Before my degree I worked in a pub and really enjoyed creating signs, I think it fed my need to make my art perfect. I’ve worked on local commissions in Chesterfield. The Society Coffee Shop and Bar wanted me to use Gold Leaf on their board, which was a steep learning curve, but it was really satisfying to achieve straight lines with such a delicate material.

AF: You used flowers for the magazine cover boards, can you tell us more about this?

ES: Years ago, whilst I was studying for my degree, I read about sacred geometry, the Fibonacci sequence and how it can be found all around us in nature. I wanted to use the flower of life in my design for this board, the overlapping geometric petals of a flower.

AF: Emma you’re a single mum, does this inform your art or distract you?

AF: Are you working on a theme for this?

ES: Motherhood, juggling with time and the stream of conscience that plays with my need for perfection. I am constantly battling with these issues, so instead of fighting it, I’m working with it to see what I can create with the materials available to me.

AF: Thank you for being so honest about your mental health and how it affected your art. So, my final question, who is your favourite artist and why?

ES: I would have to say Escher; my Mum had a book at home that I used to look at for hours. I also admire the artist Alphonse Mucha, who created beautiful decorative theatrical posters... there are so many.

AF: Thank you Emma, I’ve really enjoyed talking with you, I hope our readers enjoy your story too.

Hob Hurst's House

The next in our series of ancient sites and artefacts near Chesterfield.

H

ob is a widely-used name for a variety of mythical (and nasty) creatures - 'Hob Hurst' is believed to refer to a goblin who lived in the nearby woods. It's thought to be the origin of the name 'Hobbit' in Tolkein's books, as he was an expert in folk myths and tales. It's exact age is uncertain, although it's certainly Bronze Age, so thousands of years old. It was probably a burial mound; like many such monuments, most of the original stone has been taken for other uses. It is unusual in that the mound is rectangular rather than round, and important because it was one of the first such sites to be protected by what has evolved into English Heritage. The path to it (of about 1.5 miles) is within reach of a reasonably fit cyclist; on the way, there's a short section where the main road narrows slightly, but generally the route is pretty quiet and bike-friendly.

To get there, leave Chesterfield on the Chatsworth Road, going up the hill until you pass the 50MPH signs, just over 2 miles from the Storrs Road junction. Take the next turning on the left (Hallcliff Lane) which merges with another road coming in from the right, then follow this along through an S- bend, until, just after a sharp left, the fields on your right become moorland; there is a gate and a stile immediately after the wall dividing them.

Go over the stile and follow the path which runs parallel to the wall and ditch (on your right) as it goes up the hill. At this point, the path is relatively easy to follow, but after a while it turns slightly away from the field wall, near where it forms a corner.

There are some waymarkers, but the posts they're on are only about the height of the surrounding heather, so you'll need to keep your eyes peeled for them, although the Page 34

path goes in the same general direction anyway. The ground can hold a lot of water so may be muddy in places, even if it hasn't rained for a while.

After about 1.3 miles you'll see, on your left, a stone pillar in the heather; this is an old signpost or stoop, which is about 300 years old. It would have been put in place following the 1697 act which made local surveyors install them where two paths crossed on moors or other remote places, signposting the nearest market town. Getting lost on the moors wouldn't have been a good idea even in summer, and could easily be fatal in winter. Most of the path across nearby farmland would still have been fairly featureless tracks of heather at that time.

A few hundred yards after passing the stoop you come to Hob Hurst's House itself. It's not exactly Stonehenge, but then the nearest road (which is over the brow of the hill anyway) is the one you came from, where a few cars a minute would be a busy period. So, apart from some distant traffic noise drifting in the wind, and the occasional airplane high overhead, all you'll normally hear are the twittering of some twites or pipits, maybe a pheasant or grouse calling and, if lucky, the plaintive cry of a curlew. There are steps into the enclosure of the site itself; with your back to these (looking north-ish), there are farreaching views across the hills and moors, towards White Edge.

Go Potty Once Again Brampton Potteries Festival 13 and 14 July Word: Chris Townsend The Brampton Potteries Festival on Old Road began in 2008. The intention was to create an opportunity to bring the community together whilst paying tribute to Brampton’s long history of potteries. This year’s festival runs 13/14 July.

The theme for 2019 is ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Climbing Everest in Holymoorside!

For Meningitis Now Words: Adrian Beckett Picture: Helen Rowan Photography In 2012 at 27 years old, I had a headache, one I couldn't shake. It lasted a couple of days, then three and four. The GP put it down to a pressure headache. After a week, it was almost unbearable, and early one morning the whole right side of my body dropped, unable to move. I was unable to speak or make any sense and I developed a severe painful sensitivity to light. The pain in my head was debilitating.

My now wife, Mel called an ambulance and I was rushed into resus. I had a form of Viral Meningitis which had led to encephalitis, swelling of my brain. I was very quickly administered an anti-viral drug, without which, I would have almost certainly died.

There were no guarantees I would regain full strength in my right side or complete speech. Fortunately, I have been extremely lucky, my wife acted quickly and the hospital administered the right vaccine. The weeks and months following I was able to make an almost full recovery. I personally knew someone who had exactly the same illness and did not make it. I am a very lucky survivor.

Starting at 10pm on Fri 2 August, and if all goes well, will finish around 4pm on Sat 3, I will be giving something back by EVERESTING. In simple terms. ‘Everesting' is cycling the total ascent of Mount Everest (8,848 metres / 29,029 feet) on one hill repeatedly in one continuous activity until complete’

It's a highly ambitious physical and mental challenge, that will take around 16 to 17 hours, covering around 170 miles and 50 'reps' on the same 1.75-mile hill… that hill being Loads Road, Holymoorside.

Training began in October 2018, out on the hill at 3:30am in the dark, cold and rain. If I can ride it freezing and wet in October then August should be easy right?

I’ve lost 10kg in 8 months, lighter is definitely best for this, and my cycling threshold power is at my highest ever level, thanks in part go to the team at S40 Personal Training, Chesterfield.

Plus, doing some 'silly' sessions on the hill itself, the longest to date being 20 'reps', covering 70+ miles and 13,000 feet of climbing.

I’m lucky to have the ability to ride a bike at all and feel compelled to do something. I hope to inspire others to find their 'challenge', commit and go for it, no matter the outcome.

MENINGITIS NOW will be the beneficiaries of my challenge, with the funds raised going to the charity that’s leading research, support and awareness of this awful illness.

How on earth does a loving parent recognise that their child is not reaching their full potential when it took Jo years to acquire the skills to do so, as a head teacher and Kip tutor?

Talking to Jo Linthwaite of Kip McGrath is an enlightening experience. She understands child educational development to an incredible degree. She says recognising a child’s educational needs, and any gaps, is a complex process and can be fraught with difficulty for parents to identify when intervention could be beneficial - especially if the child’s progress is not causing concern to classroom teachers and they are at the younger end of their educational journey.

She says: Issues can start in the early years and, given class numbers and constraints of the National Curriculum, may be missed. A child with mid achievement levels, or even just below the top achievement levels, is not a worry to a teacher. If parents see that at home the child achieves more, they are often reassured by teachers that ‘all children develop at different rates’, so not to worry. That is true, but each child should be constantly developing their language and maths skills. However, if a parent feels they are not progressing, it is precisely at this time in the educational journey that parents should be extra vigilant. Realistically, if children have not got a deep enough understanding at this stage, then tiny gaps begin to develop. Maybe they missed a couple of key word blends or a maths lesson or two where number concepts for multiplication are being covered. A small hole appears.

By year 3 or 4, if you think they have not made the progress you had expected, either due to SATS, teacher parent discussions, or your knowledge of your child, then it is getting critical to start to fill in some knowledge

gaps in their Maths or English before secondary school gets closer. A child with gaps will begin to struggle by year 4.They can quickly believe themselves useless at something and start to disengage or settle for a lower level of work. One sign is they work more slowly, trying to get it right, and maybe stay in to finish work at break times. Children don’t like telling parents they miss some break time for work because they think their parents will be upset or disappointed … and so the downward spiral continues in their self-confidence and self esteem.

We are not talking about the lower achievers here but those in the middle levels, who are not a worry to the classroom teachers. Good children, nice children, well behaved children with lots of friends…sound familiar?

If this could be your child we are describing, then you can ask a few careful questions about playtime, check that homework doesn’t include ‘for those who haven’t finished, finish it at home‘. Don’t interrogate them, just be interested and listen!

If you still have doubts, then take them to Jo for an assessment. She will be able to tell you immediately if there are any little gaps, isolated gaps or big understanding gaps. It may take only a couple of targeted lessons to move them on confidently. Time rectifying gaps now, means greater results further down the line. She has a summer school that could help as well!

Storrs Road Methodist Church Centre Re-roofing Project You may remember the wooden hut which stood next to the church on Upper Moor Street, Brampton. The hut was replaced in 1971, by a brick building, and became the Storrs Road Church Centre. Opened in 1973 for community use, it has a large and small hall, kitchen and toilet facilities and is used daily by community groups.

In 2016/17, the church started a re-roofing project to raise funds to replace the leaking flat roof. These fund raising efforts have resulted in a grant of £5,000 from the Duke of Devonshire’s Charitable Trust; £3,000 from Allchurches Trust; £10,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation; £1,000 granted

by Cllr John Boult from his Members’ Community Leadership Fund; £12,000 from the Chesterfield Methodist Circuit; plus fundraising activities by the church including a Dolls House Miniatures exhibition and Mother’s Day coffee morning, a Fashion Show

by Bon Marche; and Raffle supported by a number of businesses along Chatsworth Road.

Thanks to all the amazing support and contributions, they now have the funds required and hope it will be possible to start work later in the summer.

Climate Emergency: A People’s Assembly Clare Gage's update on the second assembly organised by Create Change Chesterfield.

How can Chesterfield create a more environmentally friendly future?

11am- 4pm Sunday 21st July 2019 Assembly Rooms, Market Hall, Soresby Street, Chesterfield

This People’s Assembly will bring together the people of Chesterfield to tackle the problem of how to make our town more environmentally friendly.

We will look towards a future where our planet is healthy and our town plays its part in supporting this.

People’s Assemblies are a way for a group of people to discuss issues or make decisions collectively, where all voices are heard and valued equally and no one person or group are able to dominate the process. The day will be run by TalkShop, a team of experts in deliberative democracy. The atmosphere will be relaxed and friendly, with creative touches throughout the day.

We will use the day to consider what kind of things we can do now,

together, and what kind of things we can do to influence others including the council.

Everyone who lives in, works in or cares for Chesterfield is invited to attend.

Chesterfield Borough Council and Toby Perkins MP have shown a commitment to this People’s Assembly.

Follow up sessions are booked when plans will be presented for discussion on how to progress.

We intend for this day to create real, lasting change in Chesterfield.

Childcare is available on the day. There will be a creche and creative art sessions for children primary school age and under. All young adults of high school age are welcome to join the main group.

July Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation.

1. If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient than a sprinkler as the water can be directed exactly where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. It’s more important that fruit and vegetables are kept well-watered than ornamental plants, some of which produce a better display when slightly stressed anyway.

2. Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt or apple scab, and treat accordingly.

3. Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; most birds will have finished nesting, so you can also trim hedges without disturbing them.

4. Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Anything in grow-bags (especially tomatoes) are prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine; aim to keep the soil moist but not wet. Plants transpire water all the time, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking if the sun's not shining plants won’t need watering – any breeze or wind will also increase the amount they use.

5. A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them, as unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds) - harvest these before this happens, which usually renders them useless anyway.

Allow a plant or two to flower if you want to collect seeds, which is what you do with peas and beans anyway.

6. Check tomatoes regularly and pinch out any shoots between branches and the stem, which can appear with astonishing speed.

7. If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell.

8. Take lots of pictures of the garden, especially parts which you think could be improved. That way, you’ll have a good reference to use when you come to think about moving things or buying new plants, and with digital cameras it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of pictures anyway!

9. There may still be some vegetable plantlets in garden centres, so it’s not too late to plant some for harvesting this year. But check that they're not too leggy and make sure they have been well looked after – weedy looking seedlings rarely recover.

10.Salads generally mature quite quickly, so you can sow some every week or two to provide a succession of crops – ‘little and often’ is the best way. Children like to see instant results, so use these as a way of introducing them to gardening.
