Our approach to the breif began by investigating the site and its context. Studying the city of San Jose at large and the site’s emerging context, we felt that the best approach was to provide much needed accessible open public-realm. Inspired by the technological innovations of the Silicon Valley and the beauty of the Los Gatos Creek and its surounding natural envirnoment, our concept was to combine these two aspects. Thus, we divided the site into a grid of 10x10ft. using the idea of ‘PIXELS’ we began adding and subtracting the elements of the grid until we reached a suitable fade/in, fade/out effect between our proposal and the surrounding. As a result, we feel our intervention is bold yet delicate and that it enhances the existing site offering a new context for the existing landmarks.

The scheme’s culmination is ‘‘the Deck” a 150 ft tall observation tower, incorporating innovation in its use of light and green contemporary material palette. The Deck offers spectacular 3600 views of the downtown San Jose skyline and the Guadalupe River valley and acts as a beacon for the scheme. The pixelated landscape is extruded at different heights creating small ‘flying gardens’ offering different framed views culminating with the rooftop deck. These decks are enveloped by two different layers of lighting panels, the diffuse LED cladding the lift shaft and the mesh of LED direct lights. This design provides endless lighting possibilities from marking important historical and cultural milestones to providing a canvas for emerging artists.
