PRESTON JAME MOSQUE

INTRODUCTION

Since the dawn of Islam, the mosque has been a space for the community and fellowship. With this in mind, our proposal moves away from the traditional mosque design with its added-on domes and adorned ornamentation. Instead our scheme focuses on going back to the essence of this building typology by highlighting its social aspects. Our design harkens back to the spatial simplicity of the earliest mosques, where a series of modest spaces were wrapped around a central courtyard. So, with the city of Preston as our palette (we aimed to design ‘The Preston Mosque’ rather than a mosque in Preston) our proposal envisions a minimal contemporary design which is neutral, and thus, inclusive to an increasingly diverse, growing, Muslim population with various cultural backgrounds. The overall complex was conceived as a pure sculptural form created from the intersection of simple blocks, with contemporary minimal articulation on its façades created through the use of hit and miss brick and chamfered openings.

CONCEPT

We arrived to our final massing by dividing the functions into secular and sacred volumes, seperated by a courtyard. The volumes are then split placing the private spaces in the first floor and the public spaces in the ground floor. The two blocks’ only connection is via a central colonnade, providing shade and shelter to the courtyard. The split in functionality is further expressed with the articulation of the blocks by emphasizing the prayer hall and placing a tall iconic minaret in the middle as the project’s landmark.
